Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  3. Indian Army Recovers Huge Cache of Explosives on Kashmir Highway for Second Consecutive Day (sputniknews, Jun 9, 2020)

    “A heavy exchange of fire has been taking place between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control since early the hours of Tuesday. A firefight also took place on Sunday when the Indian Army accused the Pakistani Army of violating the ceasefire at three different places along the border in Jammu and Kashmir.

    A bomb disposal squad has been called in by Indian security forces to detonate an IED recovered by the Indian Army on the Baramulla-Handwara Highway in North Kashmir. More details about the current operation have not been made public yet.

    This comes after the Indian Army claimed to have foiled “the nefarious designs of Pakistan-based terror operatives” by recovering large quantities of arms and ammunition from a weapons dump after a joint search operation was launched by the Kupawara Police and Indian security forces along the Line of Control in the village of Keran.

    The weapons and ammunition recovered include five AK 47s, 15 AK mags, and UBGL grenades. A police complaint has also been registered under the Explosives Substances Act and an investigation is underway.

    Heavy exchange of fire is currently underway in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army said in a statement, “Pakistan has violated the ceasefire in Mankote at about 06:30 by firing with small arms & intense shelling with mortars and the Indian Army retaliating”.

    Indian security forces on Monday also detonated an unexploded mortar shell that was found in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district after both the sides engaged in a heavy firefight on the border in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

    Meanwhile, Indian intelligence reports have warned of several possible attacks in the region by “Pakistan-trained Talibani militants in Afghanistan”.

    Pakistan has maintained that search operations by the Indian Army are tactics to divert attention away from the “genocide” in Indian-administered Kashmir and that false flag operations by New Delhi are “imminent”.”

    “On 3 January, a US drone strike, authorised by President Donald Trump, killed Qasem Soleimani and Shia militia commander Abu Mahdi Muhandis who both were in a car at the Baghdad International Airport.

    Iran’s judiciary spokesman has announced that a citizen of the Islamic Republic, who allegedly provided the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) with information about the whereabouts of the late top Iranian general, will be executed.

    “Mahmoud Mousavi-Majd, one of the spies for CIA and [the Israeli intelligence service] Mossad has been sentenced to death. He gave the whereabouts of martyr [Qasem] Soleimani to our enemies”, Gholamhossein Esmaili told a televised news conference on Tuesday.

    The statement comes after the magazine Newsweek quoted several unnamed sources as saying in late March that only a few people were in the know about the killing of Soleimani by a US MQ-9 Reaper drone in Iraq earlier this year.

    According to the sources, Soleimani’s assassination was carried out in such secrecy that even the US military’s own spy satellites, the so-called “national technical means” (NTM), did not know about the drone’s position.

    One of the sources claimed that there was “no GPS track on the MQ-9 Reaper as it made its way toward Baghdad International Airport, nor was there any indication of its flight provided to radar systems tasked with identifying friendly aircraft”.

    Soleimani’s Assassination
    On 3 January, Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ Quds Force, was killed at the Baghdad International Airport in a US drone strike ordered by President Donald Trump.

    Soleimani’s assassination led to a major escalation of tensions between Tehran and Washington, with Iran officially responding by launching airstrikes against two Iraqi military bases housing US troops.

    The strikes caused no deaths or serious injuries, but the Pentagon has since reported that at least 109 US servicemembers have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries…”

    “Greek police arrested five minors who had Molotov cocktails who were thought to be plotting attacks on police officers, with officials speculating Antifa far-left anarchists may have recruited them.

    The five arrests took place in the neighbourhood of Thiseio in central Athens, with investigators claiming that the five were headed to the area of Exarcheia with several Molotov cocktails to engage in an attack against local law enforcement officers.

    According to a report from Greek newspaper Proto Thema, only two of the minors knew each other and that the five had met for the first time on Saturday evening after agreeing to meet on the internet.

    Investigators are now working on the assumption that the three minors were recruited online by veteran Antifa anarchist “anti-authoritarians”. It is suspected the far-leftists intentionally recruited children without criminal records or who were not known to the police so that the youths could undertake their activities with less suspicion.

    The arrests follow a number of incidents involving Antifa anarchists in Greece in recent weeks. Last week, extremists set an American flag on fire during a protest outside of the United States consulate in Thessaloniki. The far-leftists claimed to be acting in solidarity with Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters who they labelled “U.S. insurgents”.

    In another incident last week, which was also allegedly in solidarity with BLM protesters, far-left anarchists threw Molotov cocktails at police near the U.S. embassy in Athens in a failed effort to light the building on fire.

    The most serious case of far-left violence occurred in Thessaloniki when two extremists were arrested after trying to detonate a bomb at the home of conservative former Minister of State Dimitris Stamatis.

    The pair, a 27-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were arrested and four homes connected to the suspects were raided. Investigators seized several items including four homemade explosives, plastic bottles filled with flammable materials, and electronic devices.”

    “Suspected Russian airstrikes pounded villages on the edge of the last rebel enclave in northwestern Syria, sending thousands of civilians fleeing, activists reported Tuesday — scenes unseen in the area since a cease-fire three months ago.

    The violence at the edge of Idlib province is the most serious breach of the cease-fire in place since early March, when an agreement between Turkey and Russia halted the Syrian government’s three-month air and ground campaign into rebel-held Idlib.

    The Syria Response Coordination Group, a team of aid workers, said the military escalation displaced more than 5,800 civilians in the last 24 hours from areas in southern Idlib and western Hama countryside. Many of the displaced had only recently returned to their villages after the cease-fire, the group said.

    On Monday, insurgents launched a limited offensive against government-held positions, briefly seizing a couple of villages. Government troops, backed by Russian air support, responded, repelling the insurgents but also widening their area of operations, targeting 10 villages, according to Mohamed Rasheed, a Syrian media activist documenting the offensive.

    Rasheed reported airstrikes, believed to be carried out by Russia’s air force, on a number of villages in southern Idlib. He said he documented 45 airstrikes since Monday.

    The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights recorded 15 airstrikes on Tuesday, also saying they were believed to be Russian. The Observatory and other local networks said at least one civilian was killed in Kansafra village.

    Meanwhile, Syrian state media said government forces repelled an offensive by the insurgents, and that a soldier was killed.

    Russia is a main backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad, while Turkey backs opposition fighters trying to remove him from power. Russia and Turkey have become the main power brokers in the war-torn country.

    Rasheed said the insurgent offensive was led by the al-Qaida-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, now the dominant group in the rebel-held northwest.”

    “Turkish prosecutors issued warrants Tuesday for the detention of 191 suspects — including 181 on-duty servicemen — who are suspected of involvement in a scheme that allegedly recruited followers of the U.S.-based Muslim cleric blamed for a failed coup in 2016 into air force training schools, the state-run news agency reported.

    Anadolu Agency said the suspects are accused of cheating during air force schools’ entrance examinations between 2004-2016 that favored candidates with links to cleric Fethullah Gulen. At least 145 of the suspects were detained in raids in western Izmir province and 22 other provinces.

    The suspects include 173 sergeants, six lieutenants, two first lieutenants, eight former sergeants and two former cadets, Anadolu said.

    Turkey is still chasing alleged members of Gulen’s network, four years after the coup attempt.

    Tuesday’s warrants were issued amid an apparent new drive against Gulen’s network after Turkey eased lockdowns to fight the coronavirus outbreak on June 1. Dozens of security force members were detained in similar raids across Turkey on Monday.

    The government claims that Gulen’s followers infiltrated key state institutions over the years, including the military, the police and the judiciary. The military says more than 19,500 personnel have been sacked for alleged links to Gulen since the coup attempt.

    Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, denies any involvement in the coup attempt, which left 250 people dead.”

    How long the Rohingya were at sea and where they came from were not disclosed. Hundreds of thousands of ethnic Muslim Rohingya have fled Myanmar due to a military crackdown and many live in densely crowded refugee camps in Bangladesh. Muslim-dominated Malaysia has been a common destination of boats arranged by traffickers who promise the refugees a better life abroad.

    Malaysian marine officials intercepted the vessel Monday off the northern resort island of Langkawi, the National Task Force said in a statement. It said 53 people who jumped off the boat and tried to swim ashore were detained, another 216 were detained from the boat and the body of a woman was found on board.

    Malaysian officials had intended to turn the boat away, but it had been purposely damaged with its engine beyond repair.

    The refugees were fed and placed in a temporary detention facility, while the body has been handed over to police for investigation, the statement said…”

    More than 4,400 San Diego residents flooded City Hall with phone calls and emails Monday demanding the city reduce police funding and redirect the money toward rent relief, mental health and boosting the local minority community.

    After 12 hours of speakers and debate, the City Council declined to reduce police funding. The council agreed to create a new city Office on Race and Equity, and it increased rent relief funding by nearly $5 million to $15.1 million.

    The demands from the community came during a public hearing on the new city budget, which the council adopted in a 8-1 vote with Councilman Chris Ward voting “no.”

    The vast majority of the more than 400 callers into the council meeting — and the more than 4,000 people who sent emails — demanded the city reduce funding for police, echoing calls across the nation for cities to shift priorities in the wake of protests over police misconduct.

    Perhaps the oddest thing about Bret Baier’s interview with William Barr on Monday 8 June (video below) is that Baier keeps trying to get Barr to respond to the concocted media theme: that Trump had Lafayette Square cleared with tear gas so that he could make his walk to St. John’s Episcopal Church on the evening of 1 June.

    Barr has just explained that that’s not what happened. In fact, that’s so not what happened that there is no way to interpret the event as a sort of policy-condeming failure of “appearances” for Trump. It is just stupid — sorry to be blunt, but these are blunt times — to buy into the “bad optics” theme as if, in hindsight, it should have affected anyone’s decisions about Lafayette Square.

    An apparent surge in traffic outside Wuhan hospitals from August 2019 may suggest the coronavirus hit the area earlier than reported, a study says.

    Harvard researchers say satellite images show an increase in traffic outside five hospitals in the Chinese city from late August to December.

    The traffic spike coincided with a rise in online searches for information on symptoms like “cough” and “diarrhoea”.

    China said the study was “ridiculous” and based on “superficial” information.

    It is believed that the virus first appeared in China some time in November. Authorities reported a cluster of pneumonia cases with an unknown cause to the World Health Organization (WHO) on 31 December 2019.

    “Clearly, there was some level of social disruption taking place well before what was previously identified as the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic,” Dr John Brownstein, who led the research, told ABC news.

    The study has not been peer-reviewed.

    What did the study show?

    The researchers examined commercial satellite data from outside five Wuhan hospitals, comparing data from late summer and autumn 2018 to the same time period in 2019.

    In one case, researchers counted 171 cars parked at one of Wuhan’s largest hospitals, Tianyou Hospital in October 2018.

    Satellite data from the same time in 2019 showed 285 vehicles in the same place, an increase of 67%.

    A surge in online searches for words associated with the symptoms of coronavirus on the Chinese search engine Baidu seemed to emerge at the same time.

    “This is all about a growing body of information pointing to something taking place in Wuhan at the time,” Dr Brownstein told ABC.

    “Many studies are still needed to fully uncover what took place and for people to really learn about how these disease outbreaks unfold and emerge in populations. So this is just another point of evidence.”

    Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying dismissed the findings at a press briefing on Tuesday.

    “I think it is ridiculous, incredibly ridiculous, to come up with this conclusion based on superficial observations such as traffic volume,” she said.

    What are the implications of the study?

    The BBC’s John Sudworth in Beijing says there were limits on the data set used by researchers – for example, they could not always compare satellite images taken on the same day in consecutive years due to cloud cover in some of the photos.

    But if the infection was present – undetected perhaps – some people could have been leaving Wuhan and travelling abroad and that fits with some of the other evidence we have begun to see in other parts of the world suggesting early cases of Covid-19, our correspondent says.

    However it may be unfair to use the study as evidence of a cover-up or delay in China’s response, because with a previously unknown illness taking root in a community it is quite possible that there was some undetected spread before it was noticed officially, our correspondent adds.

    China reported pneumonia cases with an unidentified cause to WHO on 31 December 2019.

    Nine days later, Chinese authorities revealed they had detected a novel coronavirus (later named Sars-CoV-2, the virus causing Covid-19) in several of the pneumonia cases.

    Wuhan and other Chinese cities went into lockdown on 23 January 2020.

    The WHO declared Covid-19 a Public Health Emergency of Global Concern on 30 January 2020 – this followed 82 confirmed cases outside China.

    ‘Intriguing new clue’

    The precise events around the virus timeline are still unclear, more than six months on. The first known cluster of cases in Wuhan in December 2019 was centred around a local seafood market, which also sold live animals, including wildlife.

    Tests suggest the virus was present in some form, but not all cases were connected with the market and no animal source has been pinned down. Evidence has since emerged suggesting the virus might have been circulating earlier, including from a French doctor who said his patient tested positive for coronavirus in late December.

    Now there is an intriguing new clue, gleaned not from direct evidence, but from studying satellite imagery and internet search terms, which suggest hospital traffic and internet searches for symptoms were on the rise in Wuhan as early as late summer/early autumn.

    Only further research into the virus, both in animals and humans will give an answer, although it is possible we will never know exactly where and when it emerged.

    “Nearly 500 illegal immigrants held on tourist boats have been allowed to disembark in Malta after migrants stole knives and threatened to blow up a vessel.

    A total of 425 migrants on four boats went ashore on Saturday night after they were kept at sea for a month.

    Malta bowed to pressure after asylum seekers effectively hijacked the Europa II vessel by seizing knives from the boat’s galley and threatening to blow up the gas cylinder unless they were allowed to disembark in an EU nation.

    Speaking Saturday, Prime Minister Robert Abela said: “Up until Saturday morning, we had no intention of allowing the vessels to dock, but the situation escalated.

    “The security forces told us that some migrants had barged into the kitchen and stole knives. They were threatening the crew and saying they would set gas cylinders on fire.”

    “We took a difficult decision. The easiest thing to do would have been to send the army on board, take over and resolve the situation. But I did not want to risk people’s lives.”

    Abela continued with a call for the European Union (EU) to show solidarity and redistribute the asylum seekers throughout the bloc, explaining: “Some countries made pledges but said they would only follow through if we opened our ports.

    “The EU knew that there were 400 migrants on board the vessel and told us we were not doing the right thing, but it did nothing to help us. Once again, we had to carry the burden alone.”

    Many of the newly arrived immigrants are economic migrants and do not qualify for asylum and will be returned to their homelands, the prime minister added, stressing that redistributing infinite numbers of asylum seekers across Europe is not the solution to illegal immigration.

    Malta Today admitted that crew members feared for their lives during what the liberal local media outlet termed a “protest” by the illegal immigrants Saturday night.

    A source told the news outlet: “Except for the captain’s cabin, the migrants are threatening to commandeer the ship.

    “They obviously outnumber the crew and security… they threatened to burn the boat down since they have access to the kitchen as well as any utensils inside. If any trouble ensues aboard the ship, the captain will probably steer the boat to shore.

    “They say they have been on good terms with the migrants on board – that they have been feeding them regularly and respecting Ramadan dietary requirements, also entertaining them. But it is obvious the migrants have had enough, suffering constant seasickness and unable to see an end to this detention.”

    Mass migration-backing NGOs and the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights had blasted the Maltese government previously for refusing to open the country’s harbours to migrant boats. Abela argued that it did “not make sense” to roll out the red carpet for illegal immigrants while the borders were still sealed to cruise passengers and other tourists amidst coronavirus restrictions.

    Noting that the island nation’s migrant reception centres were full due to a major uptick in arrivals this year, the Maltese leader added that “hundreds of thousands” of people in Libya currently wish to make the journey to Europe.”

    As the world looks at Hong Kong and determines what should be the next step to take, President Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the Chinese-led World Health Organization and remove Hong Kong’s special trading status with the United States. Although some may not like Trump’s style of governance, his actions towards China are undoubtedly correct. China has now become the primary aggression in the world. If the world continues to appease him, it will just want more and more, until it becomes too powerful for the allies to take him.
