Seventy-five employees of West Kelowna’s Bylands Nursery are self isolating, after 14 of them recently tested positive for COVID-19.
BRITISH COLUMBIA
The outbreak at the nursery was discovered over the weekend, and as such both Bylands Nurseries and their Garden Centre have closed.
Of the 75 people who are now self isolating, 63 are temporary foreign workers while 12 are local employees.
Interior Health says the positive cases “may be linked to a group of workers who arrived in Kelowna from outside of Canada on March 12.”
UPDATE: 4:10 p.m.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry called the outbreak of COVID-19 at West Kelowna’s Bylands Nursery the province’s “first large community outbreak” of the disease.
Over the weekend, Interior Health tested a group of temporary foreign workers at the business who were experiencing symptoms. Dr. Henry would only say that “a number of them” tested positive, but the exact number is unclear
Interior Health continues to investigate the outbreak, but it’s believed the people contracted the virus while they were in Canada. The group of workers arrived in Canada in early March, before there were any COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Interior Health said the cases “may be linked to a group of workers who arrived in Kelowna from outside of Canada on March 12.”

Yes they didn’t mention where they came from, but it’s most likely from Mexico.
We get a lot of farm workers from Mexico, in the Okanagan in the summer. Farmers have a hard time getting workers. When I last heard the Government had given them the go ahead for this year, but they have to quarantine for 14 days.
I don’t know what happened with this group.
I agree.
The story about the community transmission CCP-Flu forgets to mention that these people wander into and out of our communities for essential services and short tourism, including China populated areas. . And our communities become infected through surfaces and hand to face touching. And then, we contaminate each other.
IMO, Canadian government isn’t messaging well re re the CCP-Flu. Doctors or politicians aren’t specialists in visual communications, only verbal.

Covid19 Lockdown: Police File Case Against Islamic Scholars for Flouting Govt Orders in Delhi (sputniknews, Mar 31, 2020)
https://sputniknews.com/india/202003311078779184-covid19-lockdown-police-file-case-against-islamic-scholars-for-flouting-govt-orders-in-delhi/
“On 16 March, an Islamic organisation had organised a religious gathering in the national capital with participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Kyrgyzstan. But around 1,400 people continued to stay at the venue even after New Delhi ordered a 21-day lockdown, risking their health in the process.
Police in Delhi have registered a case against Islamic preacher Maulana Saad and other members of Islamic movement Tableeqi Jamaat for hosting a religious event and allegedly violating Government orders in view of the national lockdown due to Covid-19.
A senior police official said, “We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section of Epidemic Disease Act against Maulana Saad and other of Tablighi Jamaat at Nizamuddin police station.”
“The organisers had violated government directions regarding restriction of social or political or religious gathering and for taking safety measures, including social distancing for prevention and treatment of COVID-19 viral infection,” the police officer said.
The Delhi Police has written to the city government to request taking immediate action with regard to persons, including foreign nationals, associated with Tableegh Jammat and those presently staying at various mosques and places in Delhi.
Action was requested against a total of 157 people, including 94 from Indonesia, 13 from Kyrgyzstan, 9 from Bangladesh, 8 from Malaysia, 7 from Algeria and one each from Tunisia, Belgium and Italy. The others are Indian nationals.
“Many of them are staying in mosques. The places they are staying are of common use and no social distancing measures are possible at these places,” police said.
“It may cause grave danger to public health and hence action should be taken,” the police have stated.
Earlier in the day, describing the congregation at the Markaz Talbighi Jamat in the Hazarat Nizamuddin area as a criminal act, Delhi State Chief Arvind Kejriwal wrote to the lieutenant governor to register a case against the Nizamuddin Jammat organisers.
Kejriwal stated that over 1,000 people have been evacuated from Nizamuddin centre. Meanwhile, local residents blame authorities for not acting on complaints against gathering at Markaz (centre).
Addressing media through video conferencing, the Delhi state chief said that 1,107 people who had attended the religious congregation in the Nizamudddin area have been quarantined.
“Out of 97 cases of coronavirus in the city, 24 were those who took part in the congregation earlier this month,” said Kejriwal.
Kejriwal slammed the organisers of the religious gathering, saying it was “highly irresponsible” on their part to hold such an event at a time when thousands have died in other countries due to the pandemic.
He further said that any lapse in the performance of the officers related to the Nizamuddin case will not be tolerated and strict action will be initiated.
He also stressed that there was no community transmission of coronavirus yet in Delhi and the situation was under control.
However, the residents of Nizamuddin area on Tuesday accused the civil and police administrations of not heeding their complaints about a large number of people converging at the Tablighi Jamaat Markaz amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Meanwhile, Markaz Nizamuddin, the international headquarters of Tabilghi Jamaat for close to 100 years, in a statement said that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the public curfew on 22 March, they discontinued the ongoing programme immediately. But a large number of people could not leave the premises due to the closure of railway services.”
I saw a video last night of how thousands of day workers have been leaving New Delhi and walking to their homes in the countryside, several days’ walk, because they’re afraid of starving in the city with no job. They’ve been laid off because of the Corona Virus. The Government said that no one would go hungry, but I guess the people didn’t believe them. The Government provided some buses but not enough. There were huge crowds, children too. Very sad.
Happy April Fool’s Day, everyone!
Today marks the first day in North America (and in some other places I’m sure) when rent is due during the lockdown. Of course, with mass lay-offs and forced isolation many private individuals won’t be able to pay their rent. This is why governments are telling landlords not to evict. There are or will be rent subsidies available as well.
Unfortunately, government excusing tenants’ payment obligations, while still requiring landlords to pay property taxes and mortgages, creates a de facto, modern kulak from this incredibly unbalanced equation.
I won’t bother adding the numerous examples I’ve seen of people saying they won’t be paying their rent today, despite having the means to do so. For these people, the government green light, combined with their socialist grudge against THE MAN (industrious, smart, hard-working risk takers), means today’s April Fool’s joke is on landlords.

China Concealed Extent of Virus Outbreak, U.S. Intelligence Says
China has concealed the extent of the coronavirus outbreak in its country, under-reporting both total cases and deaths it’s suffered from the disease, the U.S. intelligence community concluded in a classified report to the White House, according to three U.S. officials.
The officials asked not to be identified because the report is secret, and they declined to detail its contents. But the thrust, they said, is that China’s public reporting on cases and deaths is intentionally incomplete. Two of the officials said the report concludes that China’s numbers are fake.

Gas blast victim dies on his 56th birthday after house exploded when he went to check on it on behalf of relatives stranded in Pakistan by coronavirus lockdown (dailymail, Apr 1, 2020)

“A man died on his 56th birthday with 90 per cent burns after being caught up in a gas explosion that destroyed a family home in West Yorkshire.
Munir Hussain had gone to the home of relatives stranded in Pakistan because of coronavirus travel restrictions after neighbours smelled gas.
A huge explosion ripped through the house, in Ravensthorpe, near Dewsbury, destroying the front wall to expose bedrooms and ground floor rooms and sending masonry flying.
Mr Hussain was taken to the Special Burns Unit at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield following the explosion with 90 per cent burns but died at 1.30am on Wednesday morning. It was his 56th birthday.
His nephew Waj Ali announced: ‘Uncle Munir, of Crescent, Ravensthorpe, has sadly passed away.’
Another male was injured by flying masonry as the explosion ripped away the front wall of the brick terraced house. Flames and smoke billowed from the house.

Medics Who Speak out About Protective Equipment Shortages ‘Threatened’ by Hospitals (breitbart, Apr 1, 2020)
https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/04/01/medics-protective-equipment-shortages-threatened-hospitals/
“Doctors and nurses working for the United Kingdom’s socialised healthcare system have been warned that they could lose their jobs for sharing information about medical equipment shortages during the coronavirus pandemic.
Nation Health Service (NHS) workers have been gagged from informing the British public about the lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at hospitals throughout the nation. Those who take to social media or talk to the press about the shortages risk losing their jobs, according to frontline medical staff.
“Doctors across the frontlines are extremely concerned about the lack of personal protective equipment [PPE]. Many have told us they have tried to raise concerns through the proper channels but have been warned against taking these concerns further,” the president of the Doctors’ Association UK (DAUK), Dr Samantha Batt Rawden, told The Guardian.
“At this time when we desperately need every single doctor on the frontline, some have had their careers threatened, and at least two doctors have been sent home from work. This is unacceptable. Doctors have a moral duty to make their concerns regarding Covid-19 public if these cannot be resolved locally,” Rawden went on to say.
According to the DAUK, one doctor who raised concern about the lack of medical masks was told by hospital management that: “If we hear of these concerns going outside these four walls your career and your position here will be untenable.”
This week, some 10,000 NHS workers wrote to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, decrying the lack of PPE including medical masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns. The workers fear that the lack of reliable equipment will endanger themselves and their families as they try to care for COVID-19 patients.
The government has claimed that there is no shortage of medical supplies in the country. However, nurses at Northwick Park Hospital shared photos on social media showing them wearing bin bags amidst a shortage of medical gowns. Doctors and medical staff throughout the nation have reported similar instances.
“Our ward covers confirmed Covid-19 positive patients. I was on it all weekend. We only have plastic aprons, gloves, and surgical masks. There is one shared visor per bay (of six patients) for all healthcare workers. No gowns,” a medical consultant in Gloucestershire told The Times.
Medical staff have been warned that sharing images online of their makeshift protective equipment could face “disciplinary” measures from the NHS bosses.
Staff at Southend Hospital in Essex were given a warning on March 26th, with a memo that read: “The posting of inappropriate social media commentary or the posting of photographs of staff in uniform who are not complying with IPC [infection prevention and control] standards and social distancing requirements is unacceptable. Such behaviour will be considered under the disciplinary policy.””

MEMRI Palestinian-American Academic Seif Da’na on Hizbullah TV: Coronavirus May Have Leaked from U.S. Lab
Seif Da’na, a Palestinian-American Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, said in a March 29, 2020 interview on Manar TV (Hizbullah – Lebanon) that more people die every year from diseases like malaria and as a result of Western economic policies than from coronavirus.
Professor Da’na, who was speaking from Chicago, said there is a resemblance between COVID-19 and Adolf Hitler’s actions, who he said did not not do “anything out of the ordinary” since his actions had been no different than what Europeans did in colonial times.
He explained that Hitler is viewed as Satan only because he did these things in Europe, and he added that the coronavirus may have leaked from Fort Detrick, a U.S. Army installation in Maryland.
MEMRI Houthi Politician Abd Al-Wahhab Al-Mahbashi: The Jews, U.S. Are Behind Coronavirus Pandemic
Abd Al-Wahhab Al-Mahbashi, a member of the Houthi Political Bureau, said in a Friday, March 20, 2020 sermon that Muslims should unite on the path to Jerusalem and in Jihad against the Jews, that enmity towards the Jews is one of the identifying characteristics of Muslims, and that the Jews and the Americans are responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said that the coronavirus, which he described as an “American aggression,” was made into such a lethal virus in American laboratories and that it is divine justice that the countries of the world are suffering from a medical crisis similar to what Yemen has suffered as a result of its recent conflicts.
He also said that Yemen and the Gaza Strip are two places that have not yet had any documented cases of coronavirus infection. The video was uploaded to a YouTube channel called Rasael. The following day, two COVID-19 infections were reported in the Gaza Strip.
BREITBART – Former Obama-Era U.S. Ambassador Calls for Hungary to Be Expelled from EU
Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice has called for Hungary to be expelled from the European Union after the country passed emergency measures to combat the Wuhan coronavirus.
Ms Rice, who served as UN Ambassador and later National Security Advisor in the administration of former President Barack Obama, demanded that Hungary be removed from the European Union, stating: “Kick Hungary out of the EU.”
The comments were made in response to measures taken by the Hungarian government led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, labelled the “Coronavirus Protection Act”, which critics say allows the Hungarian government to rule by decree without the need for parliamentary consent.
The Hungarian government rebuffed claims about the new law stating that parliament is able to lift the state of emergency “at any time” and that the measures do not dissolve parliament either.
In a tweet quoted by former Ambassador Rice, it was also claimed that the Hungarians would be handing down prison sentences of up to 5 years for “spreading fake news and rumours”.
According to the text of the law, which was released by the Hungarians on Tuesday, the measures are more specific and cover those intentionally spreading false information.
“The law makes it a criminal act to intentionally spread false information and distortions that could undermine or thwart efforts to protect the public against the spread of the virus. It’s in force only during the state of danger,” government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs wrote.
Several European countries have passed sweeping authoritarian laws to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, from banning people from meeting in groups of more than two in public, to requiring citizens to fill out a government form in order to leave their own homes. Yet international criticism for unprecedented attacks on civil liberties in Europe seems to be limited to Hungary, where moves by other countries are quietly accepted.
Ms Rice went on to further criticise Prime Minister Orbán on Tuesday in an interview with broadcaster MSNBC, where she said: “We’ve had a problem in Hungary for a while where Orbán has repeatedly demonstrated his autocratic tendencies, but this power grab is near complete. He’s taken all the reins indefinitely, [and] there’s nothing to check him.”
She went on to also criticise U.S. President Donald Trump for using the term “Wuhan virus” which she said was “designed to stigmatise people of Asian descent”.
Leftist politicians, such as Tanja Fajon of the Slovenian Social Democrats, have also criticised Hungary over the issue. “This is a shame for Europe, its fundamental values and democracy. [Orbán] abused coronavirus as an excuse to kill democracy and media freedom,” Fajon said.
Tamas Harangozo, a member of Hungary’s Socialist Party, said that opposition parties within Hungary were concerned about the time limits on the emergency powers but were united in granting the government the powers to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

President Trump urges every effort to battle COVID-19 as White House expects 100K-200K virus deathsPresident Trump recently assured that there’s light at the end of the tunnel in America’s ongoing fight with the coronavirus. During a White House press briefing Tuesday, he said the outbreak is expected to peak in two-weeks. During that time, the number of virus victims may increase.
“I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead,” said President Trump. “We’re gonna go through a very tough two-weeks.”
The FDA recently approved two experimental ways of battling the virus, including using chloroquine and bone marrow from recovered patients.
“You’ll have an upslope, so as mortality the fatalities to this disease will increase and then it will come back down, and it will come back down slower than the rate at which it went up,” explained Dr. Deborah Birx, response coordinator for the White House coronavirus task force. “And so, that’s really the issue — how much we can push the mortality down?”
President Trump has compared the coronavirus to a plague and noted that it has negative economic as well as social effects across the U.S.

Sen. McConnell: Democrat impeachment push diverted attention of government from COVID-19 threat
According to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Democrat-led impeachment push “diverted the attention of the government” from the risk of coronavirus.
In an interview Tuesday, the Kentucky lawmaker acknowledged that Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) was “right on the mark” about being concerned about the virus when it started having an impact in China.
However, McConnell noted the outbreak in China came up right as the Senate was tied down on the impeachment trial. The Senate majority leader also called out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for “inserting herself” into negotiations on the recently passed coronavirus stimulus bill.
“The way I thought it would work best would be for those of us in the Senate to try to get started on a bipartisan basis and we were doing really quite well, as you may recall, until the Speaker of the House decided to insert herself into the process,” he explained. “…Which created a couple of days of unnecessary partisan sniping.”

Japan ‘on the brink’ as it struggles to hold back coronavirus
TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan will ban entry to foreigners from 73 countries and ask everyone arriving from abroad to quarantine themselves for two weeks as it struggles to contain the coronavirus, with a senior minister warning the country had been pushed “to the brink”.
Medical experts advising Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a news conference on Wednesday that the rapid spread of contagion was severely straining hospitals in Tokyo, in Osaka and in some other prefectures, and that quick action was vital.

“Fundamental responses should be made as early as today or tomorrow,” Shigeru Omi, head of the Japan Community Healthcare Organisation, said. He said the medical system could collapse even before an “overshoot” – or an explosive rise in cases.
Abe is facing growing public calls to declare a state of emergency that would give local governors greater clout to tell residents to stay home, close schools and take other steps. But the relevant enabling law includes no penalties in most cases.

Swedish Pro-Migrant Protest Violates Coronavirus Crowd Ban (breitbart, Apr 1, 2020)
https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/04/01/swedish-pro-migrant-protest-violates-coronavirus-crowd-ban/
“A demonstration outside a Swedish Migration Board facility in the city of Gothenburg this week violated government restrictions on gatherings of crowds meant to halt the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.
The protest, which saw around 85 people gathered outside the Migration Board facility, was to support stateless Palestinian migrants who have neither been given a Swedish residency permit nor been deported from the country.
The event comes after the Swedish government had put in place new measures to combat the Wuhan coronavirus, including the banning of gatherings of more than 50 people, broadcaster SVT reports.
Christer Fuxborg, press officer at the west region police, commented on the protests saying that many of the demonstrators may not have known that gathering in large groups was now against the law and said officers informed them to disperse with a warning.
“We asked people to leave. They must not be in groups of more than 50, so we make sure they understand that and then they can talk together and figure out what they should do,” Fuxborg said.
“You try to solve this as diplomatically as possible. We want to avoid grabbing people and dragging them away, so in the first instance, we inform about what applies, and then they have to take a stand on it,” he said.
The new Swedish measures are far less restrictive than countries like France or Austria where most businesses are closed and, in the case of Austria, masks are required to visit supermarkets.
In Sweden, outdoor cafes still operate with customers even being served at tables in restaurants, and some schools remain open. While Swedes can gather in groups of up to 50, in the United Kingdom the maximum public gathering is two individuals.
So far, Sweden has not seen the same level of confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths as countries like Italy or Spain. However, authorities have still begun preparations for if and when the Swedish healthcare system will be overrun due to the outbreak.
Dr Thomas Lindén, of Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare, said that in the event of a lack of resources, medical needs would be prioritised over other factors such as citizenship. The guidelines mean that illegal migrants may be given priority over elderly Swedes who are less likely to survive a severe case of the virus.”

Yep.
It taught some of us just what kind of government runs China, what that means for us.
PTrump:
Chi-na virus. The Chi-na virus.
That’s what it is, that’s where it came from.
China. It came from Chi-na.
Another hit piece on Orban which tries to end by casting a melodramatic, ominous tone. It does add interest, however, by describing the EU’s predicament with him. Strangely, this is only a predicament if you are an EU commie who gains power undemocratically, unlike the guy you are criticizing. So it seems they want to be non-elected dictators and be liked, as well. What gall.

Sorta like the SPLC listing “hate groups”.
Something to be proud of. The more they put down Mr. Orban, the higher he rises, his exceptionalism is all the more apparent.

US opposes Kosovo’s ‘new barriers’ to Serbian goods (abcnews, Apr 1, 2020)
https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/us-opposes-kosovos-barriers-serbian-goods-69917795
“The decision of Kosovo’s government to phase out the country’s 100% tariff on imports from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina starting Wednesday did not ease international pressure on the tiny Western Balkans country and sparked more domestic tensions.
Although the United States and the European Union had pushed for lifting the import taxes, Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced early Wednesday that his caretaker Cabinet would instead require goods from Serbia to be certified for quality, a mandate already in place for Kosovar products shipped to Serbia.
Marko Djuric, head of Serbia’s office for Kosovo, rejected Kurti’s move, saying “the situation did not deescalate or return to the previous state when uncivilized taxes were introduced.”
Kosovo imposed the punitive tariffs in November 2018 over Serbian efforts to block Kosovo from joining international organizations. The dispute led to the suspension of European Union-mediated talks to normalize ties between Pristina and Belgrade.
Most Serb goods stopped arriving in Kosovo after the import taxes were introduced, except for products that were mainly smuggled into Kosovo’s Serb-dominated Mitrovica.
Annual trade between Serbia and Kosovo was valued at about 400 million euros ($440 million) before the tariffs were adopted, and inflation in Kosovo rose to about 3% in 2019 after the import taxes took effect compared to 1.1% the previous year.
Kosovo was formerly a part of Serbia and won independence after a 1999 NATO bombing campaign that ended a bloody Serb crackdown on an armed uprising by members of Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority. Serbia refuses to accept Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence.
Since the start of the Pristina-Belgrade talks in 2011, 33 deals have been signed to ensure the country’s recognition each other in areas such as education and professional degrees.
Kosovo claims Serbia has not fulfilled its side of the agreements. Kosovo recognizes diplomas from Serbian universities, but Serbia does not accept the degrees of Kosovar university graduates. It’s the same with drivers’ licenses.
Kurti said the government would monitor whether Serbia moves toward reciprocity until June 15 and if not, the tariffs will be restored.
The junior partner in Kurti’s coalition government, the Democratic League of Kosovo, or LDK, initiated a successful parliamentary vote of no-confidence vote in his Cabinet last week. His government now is acting in a caretaker capacity.
The motion came after an LDK minister was fired for not supporting the restrictions on movement the government imposed to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
The LDK also wanted Kurti to fully revoke the 100% tariff and not damage ties with the Kosovo’s most important ally, the United States.
The United States argued that Kurti’s actions would strangle Kosovo’s economy.
“We remain opposed to the latest move to implement reciprocal measures on the movement of goods from Serbia.” the U.S.Embassy in Kosovo said in a statement Wednesday.
Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, hailed Kosovo’s move as “an important decision.””
Iran general visits Baghdad, tries to forge political unity (abcnews, Apr 1, 2020)
https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/iran-general-visits-baghdad-forge-political-unity-69916591
“A top Iranian general arrived in Baghdad this week to try and unify Iraq’s fractured political leaders, Iraqi officials said Wednesday, as stiff opposition by one major bloc thwarts chances the country’s latest prime minister-designate can form a government.
Meanwhile, revenues from oil exports were slashed by nearly half due to plummeting oil prices in March, according to figures released Wednesday by the Oil Ministry, pushing Iraq into deeper economic uncertainty amid political dysfunction and the coronavirus pandemic.
Esmail Ghaani, head of Iran’s expeditionary Quds Force, arrived in Baghdad late Monday, Iraqi officials said, in his first public visit to Iraq since succeeding slain Iranian general Qassim Soleimani. His arrival at Baghdad airport came amid a curfew to stem the spread of the coronavirus that has halted inbound and outbound flights.
The four Iraqi officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
Soleimani, along with Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was killed Jan. 3 in a Washington-directed airstrike outside Baghdad airport. The attack led to deteriorating U.S.-Iraq relations and prompted Iraqi lawmakers to call for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in a non-binding resolution.
After arriving, Ghaani left the airport under tight security in a three-vehicle convoy.
Known for his ability to make even the staunchest Iraqi rivals see eye-to-eye, Soleimani had made frequent trips to the Iraqi capital to forge unity during times of political paralysis.
Ghaani’s visit coincides with a burgeoning crisis in Iraq as Prime Minister-designate Adnan al-Zurfi faces resistance from some powerful political elites. Meanwhile, there is deepening fragmentation across the political spectrum. Selected on March 16, al-Zurfi has 30 days to present a Cabinet lineup.
One of the Iraqi officials who spoke to the AP said Ghaani suggested in the meetings that Iran and the Revolutionary Guard do not want al-Zurfi to be the next prime minister.
Amid the ongoing leadership void, an economic crisis is also brewing.
The Oil Ministry said Iraq had earned $2.9 billion in oil revenues in the month of March, down by nearly half compared to February. Oil sold at an average price of $28 per barrel, according to spokesperson Assem Jihad. In February, by contrast, Iraq earned $5.05 billion based on an average price of $51 per barrel.
Iraq relies on oil revenues to fund over 90% of state spending. The 2020 budget projected an oil price of $56 per barrel to fund expenditures.
Experts have warned that if the slump in oil revenues is prolonged, Iraq will be unable to pay public sector salaries, a step that will likely lead to more unrest.
The government has been taking steps to conserve dollar reserves and cut back on spending.
This month, the oil ministry requested that international oil companies reduce expenditures by 30% while keeping production rates the same, according to two industry officials.
One of the officials said a lot of tenders and projects will be halted and planned production increases will be delayed. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to not derail ongoing talks with the government.
Many officials considered Ghaani’s visit to be a test of his ability to establish consensus among rival parties like his predecessor had. Given his poor command of Arabic and lack of personal relationships with key figures, some were in doubt.
“This is his first test to see if he can succeed in uniting the Shiite position, as Soleimani was doing,” said a senior Shiite political official, speaking on condition of anonymity to comment freely about the visit, which has not been publicly announced.
“Iran is still powerful and (Ghaani) will have to rely on threats to try and find some way to bring back the massive fragmentation that is Iraqi elite politics today,” said Renad Mansour, senior research fellow at Chatham House in London. “Carrot and stick rather than managing networks.”
Iraq’s political scene has become more difficult to maneuver since Soleimani’s death, with more political infighting between Shiite and Kurdish parties.
“There are too many people who feel entitled to a piece of the pie,” said Mansour. “The competition seems heightened.”
The Fatah bloc in parliament, which came in second after Sairoon in the May 2018 election, vehemently opposes al-Zurfi on the grounds that his selection was made unilaterally by the president and without political agreement. Headed by Hadi al-Ameri, Fatah is composed of parties with affiliated militias under the Popular Mobilization Forces, some of which are Iran-backed. The Sairoon bloc, led by influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, initially supported al-Zurfi’s candidacy.”
U.S. Intel Confirms China Hid Severity of Coronavirus Outbreak (breitbart, Apr 1, 2020)
https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/04/01/u-s-intel-confirms-china-hid-severity-coronavirus-outbreak/
“Communist officials in China have hidden the severity of the coronavirus outbreak within their borders, under-reporting both total cases and fatalities linked to the disease, the U.S. intelligence community reportedly confirmed in a classified report to the White House.
Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, is the birthplace of the novel coronavirus illness (COVID-19).
During the early stages of the epidemic in China that was later deemed a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), Beijing hid the extent of the viral outbreak, muzzling and jailing whistleblowers and critics in a move that allowed the disease to gain a firm foothold across the world.
Citing three officials familiar with the classified report issued by the American intelligence community, Bloomberg revealed on Wednesday:
The officials asked not to be identified because the report is secret and declined to detail its contents. But the thrust, they said, is that China’s public reporting on cases and deaths is intentionally incomplete. Two of the officials said the report concludes that China’s numbers are fake. The report was received by the White House last week, one of the officials said.
Health officials detected the first case of the coronavirus in China in mid-November 2019. Yet, the Asian giant has publicly reported fewer cases and fatalities than the United States, where officials diagnosed the first person with coronavirus in late January.
Communist China has revised its methodology for counting cases several times. For weeks, the country ignored asymptomatic cases entirely. This week, it finally added over 1,500 cases of people without symptoms to its tally.
On Tuesday, Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, lambasted the incomplete Chinese data, saying it misled experts on the seriousness of the deadly and highly contagious disease.
“I think the medical community interpreted the Chinese data as that this was serious but smaller than anyone expected,” she declared. “Because I think probably we were missing a significant amount of the data.”
Dr. Birx conceded that when she saw early data from China reporting only 50,000 cases of the coronavirus among the 80 million in Hubei province, she felt that the threat was similar to that of SARS, which had 8,098 cases globally and 774 deaths.
It was not until information came out of countries such as Italy, Spain, and South Korea that experts began to see the full picture of the disease’s devastation, she indicated.
Bloomberg acknowledged:
While China eventually imposed a strict lockdown beyond those of less autocratic nations, there has been considerable skepticism of China’s reported numbers, both outside and within the country.
…
China is not the only country with suspect public reporting. Western officials have pointed to Iran, Russia, Indonesia, and especially North Korea, which has not reported a single case of the disease, as probable under-counts. Others, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, may also be playing down their numbers.
On March 25, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blasted China’s “intentional disinformation campaign,” drawing the ire of Beijing.
“At the beginning of this, when it was clear that this was an issue, China knew about it, they were the first country to know about the risk to the world from this virus, and they repeatedly delayed sharing that information with the globe,” Pompeo proclaimed.”

In mid-March, as America became the nation with the most cases of the coronavirus (if you trust the Chinese statistics), Trump declared himself “a wartime president,” fighting “an invisible enemy,” which he described as the most dangerous enemy of all.[1] But anyone paying attention to the political battlefield recently knows that there are actually two wars engulfing the country, posing dire threats to its future.

Lying China
Why China’s official data on the coronavirus and its death numbers cannot be trusted.
April 1, 2020
Joseph Klein
If we are to believe China’s figures, the number of Covid-19 coronavirus cases in China as of March 31 was 82,240, with 3,309 deaths. The United States has now just under 165,000 cases and has surpassed 3000 deaths attributed to the virus – about double the official number of China’s cases and fast approaching China’s official death total. China claims that it has largely defeated the coronavirus and is opening public transportation, schools, and factories. The Chinese Communist Party has promoted itself as the global role model for how to lead a “people’s war” against COVID-19 and save many lives. “Party officials have tried to spin the crisis as a testament to the strength of China’s authoritarian system and its hard-line leader, Xi Jinping,” the New York Times reported, “even announcing plans to publish a book in six languages about the outbreak that portrays him as a ‘major power leader’ with ‘care for the people.’”
China’s officially reported case and death totals to date just happen to be remarkably close to a prediction last February by Stanford University biology professor Michael Levitt. Dr. Levitt, who won the 2013 Nobel Prize in chemistry, predicted that China would peak with around 80,000 cases and 3,250 deaths. Dr. Levitt has spent a couple of months a year in China. “I became much more interested in China, and seeing the country through the eyes of somebody who has lived there made it very different,” he said. Dr. Levitt was appalled by the travel restrictions imposed by the United States. “It’s crazy,” he said, as quoted by China Daily. “Travel bans don’t help at all. I think all this punishment just leads to under-reporting, and it’s not a good idea.” Although he is not an epidemiologist, the Chinese government featured him with appearances on the Chinese State broadcaster China Global Television Network.
https://cms.frontpagemag.com/fpm/2020/03/lying-china-joseph-klein
The Chinese used Levitt’s prediction to set the data values that were reported. They fit the curve PERFECTLY.
– – Nothing, NOTHING in nature is THAT perfect.
My friend in Japan and I were playing with the numbers from January through February. It was so obvious, we were laughing.
China pulled this off because nobody challenged them. People who know better – the world’s full of biostaticians – the cover-up couldn’t have happened without their tacit assistance.
RT Documentary – Desperate Straits: The African refugee crisis hits Europe hard
It is estimated that by 2019 the flow of #migrants from Africa has reached 36 million people.
One third is headed for Europe.
Most refugees sail out of Libya on overcrowded inflatable boats, choosing to risk their lives and reach Sicily, rather than closer Tunisia or Malta. Why so?
Many Italians believe that NGO rescue boats serve as mortal baits, luring more people into reckless crossings, only to end up in the hands of profiteers, exploiting migrants and pocketing budget funds allocated by the government.
Professors Push Back On Pandemic Models: Be Honest About What Happens After Lockdowns Are Lifted
A recently posted op-ed by two professors — an associate professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University and an assistant professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Pittsburgh — calls for greater “honesty in pandemic modeling,” which, they suggest, too often conceals the fact that after lock-downs and other extreme social distancing measures are lifted, the number of infections will rapidly rise again.
The problem, Carnegie Mellon’s Wesley Pegden and Pittsburgh’s Maria Chikina explain in an analysis posted on Medium Sunday, is that many of the models that have been shaping the narrative on COVID-19 mitigation efforts only present “the effects of mitigations over a limited time-frame,” when “most of the impact of the epidemic would occur outside of that time-frame.” In so doing, the models appear to show that extreme social distancing measures for a given period of time will save a large number of lives, but they often fail to show what happens after the measures are lifted (emphasis theirs):

Questions About State Department’s ‘China First’ Shipment
A little less than two months ago, the U.S. State Department made a curious announcement that suggests President Trump’s “America First” administration put “China First” at a critical moment during the burgeoning Wuhan pandemic.
I asked the State Department about the controversy this week — and the vague and nonresponsive responses I received on background from a Foggy Bottom spokesperson raise more questions than they answer.
The Feb. 7, 2020 press statement attributed to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is headlined: “The United States Announces Assistance to Combat the Novel Coronavirus.” That week, we are told, the State Department “facilitated the transportation of nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to the Chinese people, including masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials. These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.”
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Nearly 18 tons of critical medical supplies went to the Communist government whose country unleashed COVID-19 on the world, downplayed it, punished whistleblowers who warned about it and attacked critics worldwide as racist? Whose idea was this “generosity?” Which “American people” approved this plan? Was the aid solicited or unsolicited? I asked our government.
