No desire for quarantine: Corona-infected Afghan with severe symptoms of illness disappears from the asylum seeker facility in Suhl, Germany
Germany’s borders are still wide open and so a “refugee”, presumably from Afghanistan, could enter Germany via Sweden without any problems and continue his way to the refugee centre in Suhl. Along with the “refugee” came the Coronavirus, which is now quarantining 533 residents in the accommodation. In addition, the area is guarded by the security and police to enforce the curfew, but it is expected that the mood in the facility could change.
Following the illness of one resident of Covid 9, quarantine was imposed on all currently 533 residents of the country’s asylum centre on the Friedberg hill in Suhl on Saturday night.
The infected person was presumably an Afghan who had arrived in the asylum centre via Sweden and Hamburg and did not arrive at the centre until Friday morning. During the course of the day his condition had deteriorated considerably, he had looked sick, coughed heavily and had a fever. In the evening, the rescue service came and examined him, a young man told the authorities.Since then the infected man has disappeared.

Eastern-Based Libyan National Army Claims It Hit Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport Killing Turkish Servicemen (sputniknews, Mar 15, 2020)
https://sputniknews.com/africa/202003151078571761-eastern-based-libyan-national-army-hits-tripolis-mitiga-airport-killing-turkish-servicemen/
“Turkey has been sending troops to war-torn Libya to support the UN-backed Government of National Accord. According to Turkish President Erdogan, Ankara seeks to protect the GNA from being overthrown by the Libyan National Army, which supports the eastern-based interim government in the port city of Tobruk.
The Libyan National Army has hit the Mitiga Airport in Tripoli, Libya, killing Turkish servicemen stationed there, the LNA spokesperson said on Sunday.
According to spokesperson Ahmad al-Mismari, for the past several days, the LNA has struck Turkish military targets, including radars and air defences, located at the Mitiga air field. He noted that the LNA had also destroyed everything in the Misrata region that is viewed as having a “Turkish presence”, including military depots.
Al-Mismari underlined that the LNA is adhering to the truce, and carries out operations only as a response to provocations by the GNA.
He added that the LNA forces had entered several districts of Tripoli but they are not advancing in compliance with the ceasefire…”

March 13, 2020
Three Turkish men were sentenced this week to 125 years in jail for their part in the drowning of a boy whose death in 2015 became a worldwide symbol of the suffering caused by the Syrian war and the European refugee crisis it triggered.
A photograph of the tiny body of Alan Kurdi, 2, facedown on a Turkish beach appeared on the front pages of newspapers across Europe and around the world, fueling an upsurge in public sympathy and anger at the plight of refugees.
Alan, whose forename appeared in initial reports with its Turkish spelling, Aylan, died with his brother, Galip, 5; their mother, Rihan; and two other refugees when a dinghy carrying 14 migrants toward the Greek island of Kos capsized. From his immediate family, only the father survived.
In 2016, two Syrians, Muwafaka Alabash, 36, and Asem Alfrhad, 35, were convicted of smuggling refugees in the case. A separate investigation was initiated into the organizers of the illegal crossing.
The Turkish police had been seeking three more suspects, and they were eventually captured in the southern city of Adana. A court in Bodrum, the popular holiday spot where the bodies of the children were found, convicted them of manslaughter with probable intent in the deaths of the five migrants.
The state-run Anadolu news agency identified the men on Friday as Cebrail E., Ecevit Bulent G and Ali Can S. Their precise role in the refugees’ deaths has not been publicly confirmed; the final hearing in the case was on Wednesday.
Thanks for reading The Times.
Subscribe to The Times
The case was particularly important in Germany, then in the first months of welcoming what would eventually be more than a million refugees from the crisis. The country’s best-selling tabloid, the usually conservative Bild, printed the image of Alan’s body on an otherwise black back page, with text declaring it a message to the world to unite and save migrants. When readers complained, it removed all photographs from a subsequent edition.
Around six months after the children’s deaths, Turkey and the European Union brokered a deal that has largely succeeded in stemming the flow of migrants to Europe. But the politics of migration in the continent has become increasingly toxic in Germany and elsewhere.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has long accused the European Union of failing to send the funding it promised in the deal and of leaving his country alone in tackling the migration crisis.
Finally, last month, Turkey opened the doors for migrants who want to cross into Europe, sending thousands of refugees to the Greek border. It set off clashes with Greek police and led to the drowning this month of a child when a dinghy carrying 48 migrants capsized while trying to reach the Greek island of Lesbos from the Turkish coast, the Greek Coast Guard said.

Swedish Priest Accused of Smuggling Migrant Out of Detention in Suitcase (breitbart, Mar 15, 2020)
https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/03/15/swedish-priest-accused-smuggling-migrant-detention-center-suitcase/
“A Swedish priest in the city of Gävle is suspected of helping a migrant escape a Migration Board deportation facility by smuggling him out in a suitcase.
The 20-year-old migrant disappeared from the facility on February 23rd after a visit from two women, one of whom is an ordained priest in the Church of Sweden. The priest is said to have arrived at the facility with a large suitcase she claimed was for an adult baptism ceremony.
Now, the Director-General of the Migration Board Mikael Ribbenvik has accused the priest of using the suitcase to smuggle the migrant out of the detention centre, Nyheter Idag reports.
Ribbenvik wrote a letter to Church of Sweden Archbishop Antje Jackelén concerning the matter, saying it had seriously damaged the agency’s trust in the Swedish church.
“A priest has abused our trust. In normal cases, you can’t bring a bag, but they got confidence and then this exemption was made. We’ve been tricked,” he said.
Swedish news website Samhällsnytt had made allegations regarding the incident in late February, stating that Camilla Ulén, a priest who serves the Värmdö parish in Stockholm, was the one behind the smuggling of the migrant.
The website stated the migrant was an Afghan national who had been in Sweden since 2015 and that the Migration Board had serious doubts about the validity of his Christian conversion, which was the reason he was seeking asylum in Sweden.
A reporter from Samhällsnytt spoke to Ulén by phone and the priest dismissed the allegations that she helped the migrant escape.
The Swedish church, which has become well-known as a hub of “woke” left-liberalism, clashed with police in 2017 over migrant deportations in Skåne after a raid on a church-sponsored migrant camp.
The church has been not only remained pro-mass migration since the height of the 2015 migrant crisis but has gone out of its way to accommodate Muslims, in particular.
In October 2015, Stockholm archbishop Eva Brunne, the first openly lesbian bishop in the world, asked churches to remove crosses and allow for the creation of Muslim prayer spaces.
She later went on to say that she had more in common with Muslims than she did with conservative Christians.”

Greece transferring 450 migrants to facility near Athens (abcnews, Mar 15, 2020)
https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/greece-transferring-450-migrants-facility-athens-69603027
“Greece is transferring 450 migrants recently detained for trying to reach the island of Lesbos illegally to a facility near Athens, authorities said Sunday.
A ship with the migrants landed at a port near Athens and the migrants will be transferred to a facility just north of the capital pending deportation, an official at the Ministry of Migration policy told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the matter. The transfer to the facility was still underway Sunday morning.
All the migrants have been detained since March 1, just days after Turkey said it was opening its borders to the millions of migrants on its soil. In response, Greece has toughened its stance, suspending all asylum applications for a month and jailing migrants, and refugees, who tried to cross the land border from Turkey.
Although the migrants had been taken to the ship several days ago, the whole operation had been shrouded in secrecy, with officials refusing to comment on the ship’s destination even after it left Lesbos early Saturday afternoon.”
Greece: Lesvos locals march in solidarity with refugees and against new “detention centres”
[…]Activists, who were also protesting against recent attacks on migrants and NGO workers, were also demanding the government to halt the construction of new centres to replace current facilities, which are running over capacity.
Greece: Navy ship transfers 450 migrants to mainland ahead of deportation
A total of 450 refugees boarded a navy ship in Lesvos’ main city Mytilene on Saturday, ahead of being transferred at migrant centres in Malakasa and Serres, according to Greek Migration minister Notis Mitarakis, ahead of their planned deportation.
Footage shows families and individuals being checked by authorities before entering the navy ship, with police forces wearing protective masks.
According to reports, the migrants being moved did not qualify for asylum, since they arrived after March 1, when Greece announced they would not be accepting any new asylum applications for one month.
Earlier this month Greece announced it would not accept new arrivals, following the new influx of refugees drawn by Turkey’s decision to open its western border and allow migrants to cross into the EU.

UN agency says over 400 migrants intercepted off Libya coast (abcnews, Mar 15, 2020)

“Libya’s coast guard intercepted over 400 Europe-bound migrants off the country’s Mediterranean coast and returned them to the capital of Tripoli over the past 24 hours, the U.N. migration agency said Sunday.
The International Organization for Migration tweeted that 301 migrants on three boats were intercepted on Saturday and brought back to Tripoli. Another 105 migrants on two boats were intercepted on Sunday.
It said most of the migrants were taken to detention centers in Libya, where there are “serious concerns over their safety.”
Some migrants managed to escape at the disembarkation point, as the boats were brought back to shore, the IOM said.
“It is unacceptable for this to continue despite repeated calls to put an end to the return of vulnerable people to detention and abuse,” said Safa Msehli, a spokeswoman for the IOM…”
Turkey-Russia patrols start amid protests on Syrian highway (abcnews, Mar 15, 2020)
https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/turkey-russia-patrols-start-amid-protests-syrian-highway-69604131
“Turkish and Russian troops began joint patrols Sunday on a key highway in northwestern Syria, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said, while both the Russian government and Syrian opposition activists said the patrols were shortened because of protests.
Patrols on the highway known as the M4, which runs east-west through Idlib province, are part of a cease-fire agreement between Turkey and Russia signed earlier this month. The cease-fire ended an escalation in fighting that saw the Turkish military in rare direct conflict with Syrian government troops.
The vital highway, which runs through northern Syria from the Mediterranean to the Iraqi border, has been partially closed since 2012. Work has been underway over the past days to refurbish it for traffic. Some sections of the M4 remain under rebel control, unlike the north-south M5 highway, which Syrian forces completely recaptured in the latest offensive.
For the past three days, residents along rebel-held parts of the M4 have protested in rejection of Russian troops patrolling the road because of Moscow’s strong support to Syrian government forces.
“The first Turkish-Russian united land patrol was carried out on the M4 highway in Idlib with the involvement of land and air elements,” Turkey’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said Turkey and Russia carried out their first joint patrol mission along the M4 highway Sunday adding that “the patrols’ route was shortened” after militants used women and children to block the way. The Defense Ministry’s statement was carried by state-run news agency Tass.
Ankara has been given additional time to ensure the safety of troops taking part in joint patrols, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Syrian opposition activists said residents blocked the highway with burning tires near the village of Nairab on the southern edge of Idlib in rejection to patrols by “Russian occupation forces.”
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor with activists on the ground in Syria, said the joint patrols were not successful as they moved a short distance west of the government held town of Saraqeb before being stopped by the protests.
It added that jihadi groups have threatened to attack Russian forces on the highway. Idlib is mostly controlled by al-Qaida-linked militants.
Ankara backs some of the opposition groups in Idlib, the fighters’ final stronghold against the Russian-backed forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Some 60 Turkish soldiers have been killed in Idlib since the start of February as Syrian troops carried out a ground and air offensive into the province that began in early December. The assault killed hundreds of civilians and sent 1 million fleeing towards the Turkish border.
Russian officials visited Ankara last week to hammer out the cease-fire. After four days of talks, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said Turkey hoped the deal would prove to be permanent.
Turkey and Russia already conduct joint military patrols elsewhere in Syria. Following an agreement that halted Turkey’s attack on Kurdish forces in October, soldiers from the two countries monitor an area of northeast Syria along the Turkish border.”

Thread:
Turkey’s decision to “punish” Europe by opening the border after its soldiers were killed by Russian-backed regime in Idlib…and then signing a deal with Russia on Idlib…notice Ankara’s rhetoric bashing EU is never same as how it works closely with Russia.
It’s amazing, the more Russia pressures Turkey in Idlib, the more Turkey then pressures Europe…not to get Europe to stand up to Russia, just to take out Syrian regime’s offensive on EU…and create a distraction crises for Ankara.
Notice Ankara’s end goal was to get international media to SHIFT FOCUS FROM IDLIB to the Greek border so it could get its Russia deal; Ankara wanted LESS reporting on the 900,000 IDPs in Idlib after the deal #think.
Ankara didn’t help Idlib refugees flee to Europe…it’s goal was to move the media focus to Greek border crises which it created, so it could pretend that nothing was happening in Idlib when it signed the Russia deal.
Even human rights groups were dissuaded from going to Idlib and shifted focus to Greek border to document the crises…CBS and NBC did Idlib stories early March, but Turkey got CNN to go to Greek frontier. Then encouraged NYT, HRW and others to focus on Greece too in last week.
Another thing to consider is that Turkey doesn’t want human rights groups to see its wall along the border which keeps migrants out.

Chinese authorities have so far identified at least 266 people who were infected last year, all of whom came under medical surveillance at some point.
Some of the cases were likely backdated after health authorities had tested specimens taken from suspected patients.

Biden Taps Coronavirus ‘Expert’ Who Thinks 75 is the Perfect Age To Die
For a pandemic that seems particularly fatal for the elderly, Joe Biden has tapped a so-called “expert” to advise him about the Wuhan coronavirus. The only problem with the “expert” is that he believes people should die before they get too old, saying he himself wishes to die at the age of 75. Biden is 77.
The former vice president and Democratic presidential candidate has decided to create a “Public Health Advisory Committee” to inform him about the coronavirus while the candidate campaigns for the White House. Biden is trying to paint a picture of himself as an informed, capable leader who can spearhead this nation’s way out of anything. On Friday, the candidate and his team couldn’t figure out how to run a virtual town hall.

How Government Red Tape Stymied Testing and Made the Coronavirus Epidemic Worse
FDA and CDC bureaucrats stopped private and academic diagnostic tests from being deployed.
The United States is home to the most innovative biotech companies and university research laboratories in the world. That fact should have given our country a huge advantage with respect to detecting and monitoring emerging cases of COVID-19 caused by the new coronavirus outbreak.
Instead, as The New York Times reports in a terrific new article, officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stymied private and academic development of diagnostic tests that might have provided an early warning and a head start on controlling the epidemic that is now spreading across the country.
As the Times reports, Seattle infectious disease expert Dr. Helen Chu had, by January, collected a huge number of nasal swabs from local residents who were experiencing symptoms as part of a research project on flu. She proposed, to federal and state officials, testing those samples for coronavirus infections. As the Times reports, the CDC told Chu and her team that they could not test the samples unless their laboratory test was approved by the FDA. The FDA refused to approve Chu’s test on the grounds that her lab, according to the Times, “was not certified as a clinical laboratory under regulations established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a process that could take months.”

Space Force Just Received Its First New Offensive Weapon
S. Space Force has begun operating a new offensive weapon system, an upgraded version of a ground-based satellite communications jamming system, for the first time in its short history. The first iteration of the Counter Communications System entered U.S. Air Force service in 2004 and the program has now gotten transferred to the newest branch of the American military.
The Space Force declared it had reached initial operational capability with the Counter Communications System Block 10.2, or CCS B10.2, on Mar. 9. The Harris Corporation, which merged with L3 Technologies last year to form L3Harris Technologies, had received the contract from the Air Force to develop this upgraded variant of the system in 2014.

Hillary Clinton attempts to reverse order to appear at deposition
The deposition of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been put on hold as her legal team pursues an appeal. Attorneys for Clinton filed the appeal Friday in an attempt to evade the sworn testimony to conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch.
A judge filed the order earlier this month, ordering her to testify over her use of a private email server during the attacks in Benghazi, Libya. As part of the 83-page appeal, Clinton’s lawyers called the impending deposition inappropriate, unnecessary and a clear abuse of discretion.
The head of Judicial Watch has said the move was interesting. He pointed out that the federal judge previously said there were more questions that needed to be answered beyond the original statements provided.
“I have to say I was surprised Mrs. Clinton sought this desperate review of the upper court,” stated Tom Fitton. “I say it’s desperate, I don’t believe it’s going to go anywhere, but who knows how the courts are going to rule.”
The conservative group attempted to get the former presidential candidate to testify in 2012 using a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. Both parties were given 75 days to gather evidence and prepare depositions.
However, the date is now up in the air and it remains unclear when the appellate court will announce a verdict.

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,483, March 15, 2020
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Though analysts tend to portray Russia’s foreign policy as truly global (that is, independent of Europe, the US, and China), the country is plainly tilting toward Asia. The Russian political elite does its best to hide this development, but the country is accumulating more interests and freedom to act in Asia than in Europe or anywhere else.
When the Ukraine crisis broke out in 2014, political analysts pointed out, quite rightly, that Russia without Ukraine would become more Asian. With the country’s borders now more in Asia than in Europe, Moscow would inescapably focus more on the Middle East and China. The latter would become Russia’s primary ally in global politics, but there would also be fears that Beijing would overshadow Moscow’s role in their bilateral relations. In other words, analysts believed Russia would turn into a Chinese appendage that provided energy resources to the Asian giant.
Years have passed, and there have been some interesting twists in this analysis. Russian analysts and many in the West have started to develop the idea that the Ukraine crisis and the ensuing deterioration of relations with the West freed Russia from its Euro-centrist views on foreign policy. For the first time since Peter the Great, Russia would initiate “de-Europeanization” of its geopolitical outlook and once again be truly Russian in terms of the way it conducted its foreign relations. In this analysis, Beijing is viewed as a facilitator for Moscow.
https://besacenter.org/perspectives-papers/russia-greater-asia/
Maybe.
It’s too bad. Russians aren’t crazy about it, but they get it.
Europe is as hostile to Israel and India as it is to Russia. Looks like that’s only going to get worse. Adjustments are inevitable.

Are China’s Artificial Island Bases Sinking?
China’s rapidly constructed man-made island bases in the South China Sea appear to be collapsing and sinking due to shoddy construction and weather conditions.
Intended to give China effective, albeit illegal, control over large areas of ocean in strategically located contested or international waters, these artificial islands have been a flash-point for potential conflict with the U.S. and neighboring countries. But now they seem to be sinking.
As noted by The National Interest, “the Chinese government has dredged and mostly destroyed ecologically delicate reefs in disputed waters,” beginning in 2013, “in order to build seven major military bases complete with ports, airstrips and radar and missile installations.”
China’s dredging and construction came at a huge environmental cost, destroying much of the delicate reefs and surrounding sea life.
But to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the new bases were worth the environmental cost. As The Economist explains, the bases “allow China to control the entirety of the South China Sea in any scenario short of all-out war with the United States,”
“The new port and resupply facilities are helping China project power ever further afield. Chinese survey vessels look for oil and gas in contested waters.”

Malaysia reports 190 new coronavirus cases, most linked to mosque event
https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/malaysia-reports-190-new-coronavirus-cases-most-linked-to-mosque-event
“Malaysia has reported its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus cases, announcing 190 new confirmed patients on Sunday (March 15).
“Based on initial investigations, the majority of these new cases are linked to the cluster involving the ‘ijtimak tabligh’ gathering at the Jamek Sri Petaling Mosque,” said the Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.
The Health Ministry had announced on Saturday that 77 people confirmed for Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, were linked to the religious event held at a mosque in Selangor.
The gathering was attended by about 16,000 people from several countries.
With the new cases, the tally of those affected by Covid-19 in Malaysia has climbed to 428 people. Of the total, 42 have been discharged. Nine patients are in intensive care units (ICU) in hospitals and require respiratory assistance. This is an increase from five ICU patients on Saturday.
Dr Adham said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will meet with the health and defence ministries on Monday to discuss further measures for tackling the pandemic, following the steep spike in infections.
While the ministry did not provide specifics of the 190 new cases, including where they were infected, it said the bulk are linked to the religious gathering held from Feb 27 to March 1.
Authorities estimated about 14,500 attendees were Malaysians. Contact tracing for the attendees is ongoing…”
The government approved the tracking of cellphones by the Shin Bet security service in order to inform people who were unwittingly close to someone diagnosed with the virus during the two weeks prior to the diagnosis.
7:50 P.M. Israel approves emergency measures allowing Shin Bet to track phones
The government has approved emergency measures allowing the Shin Bet to track the cellphones of those infected with the virus and those who were around them in the 14 days preceding their diagnoses, in order to inform them via text message that they must enter home quarantine. The approval will be valid only during the coronavirus crisis and for 30 days, at the end of which the information will be entirely deleted. The Shin Bet will not be allowed to use the data for any other purposes, and it will be given to the Health Ministry immediately. Violating these instructions will be considered a criminal offense. A senior official in the Justice Ministry tells Haaretz that this means the Shin Bet can track phones without a court order. (Noa Landau)

Saudi Arabia widens crackdown, detains 298 public officials
https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/saudi-arabia-widens-crackdown-detains-298-public-officials
“Saudi Arabia on Sunday announced the detention of hundreds of government officials, including military and security officers, on charges involving bribery and exploiting public office, and said investigators would bring charges against them.
Scores of the kingdom’s economic and political elite were detained in 2017 at Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel in a crackdown that unsettled some foreign investors.
The royal court said last year it was winding down that campaign after 15 months, but the authorities later said they would start going after graft by ordinary government employees, Reuters reported.
Still, Middle East Eye reported earlier this month that the widening crackdown now underway by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) is his boldest act yet in his quest for power. As many as 20 princes have been arrested for allegedly being part of a coup to overthrow MBS, who is now apparently poised to become king, MEE also reported.
At least two members of the Bayaa, or Allegiance Council, which determines the succession to the Saudi throne, have been arrested as part of the purge, Middle East Eye reported earlier this month.
An anti-corruption body known as Nazaha tweeted on Sunday that it had arrested and would indict 298 people on crimes including bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of power involving a total of 379 million riyals ($101m).
Among those implicated were eight defence ministry officers suspected of bribery and money laundering in relation to government contracts during the years 2005-2015, and 29 interior ministry officials in the Eastern Province, including three colonels, a major general and a brigadier general.
Two judges were also detained for receiving bribes, along with nine officials accused of corruption at Riyadh’s Al Maarefa University, which resulted in severe damage to a building and caused deaths and injuries, Nazaha said.
The agency provided no names and few other details about the cases.”
