Reader’s Links on the Ides of March 2020

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Turkey slams Greece over treatment of asylum seekers
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200315-turkey-slams-greece-over-treatment-of-asylum-seekers/

“Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias’ remarks on social media are “concrete evidence of the inconsistent, double-standard, illegal and inhumane policies” pursued by this country, said Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman on Sunday, referring to the asylum seekers along the Turkey-Greece border, Anadolu Agency reports.

In a written statement, Hami Aksoy said, “Greece does not protect the borders of the European Union, to the contrary, disgracefully tramples on the very principles and values this Union was built upon, by treating the migrants coming to its gates as enemies instead of human beings.”

Greece is attacking asylum seekers without sparing women and children, “which remind[s] the practices of Nazis”, by using gas, bullets and pesticides on them.

On its 17th day, the asylum seekers’ are still waiting on the European border….”

  2. Malta rescues 112 migrants from sinking boat
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200315-malta-rescues-112-migrants-from-sinking-boat/

“A group of 112 North African migrants was rescued from a sinking dinghy and landed in Malta early on Sunday, supervised by troops in special protective clothing against possible coronavirus infection, authorities said, Reuters reports.

The dinghy was spotted in Malta’s search and rescue region north of Libya on Saturday. Those on board included several women and children. The armed forces said the nationalities of those aboard was not immediately known.

Maltese soldiers who transferred them to a patrol boat wore special suits to protect them from possible coronavirus infection. All the migrants were given a medical checkup upon landing before boarding buses to be taken to a reception centre.

Malta has seen a surge of migrant arrivals this year. Some 1,500 had arrived by early March, compared to 3,400 for the full year last year.

Italy has also seen a sharp annual rise since the start of the year. But arrivals have fallen off sharply since the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis in northern Italy late last month, with only 43 arrivals so far recorded in March.”

The 7th Military World Games was the first international military multi-sport event to be held in China and also it was the largest military sports event ever to be held in China, with nearly 10,000 athletes from over 100 countries competed in 27 sports.[4][5] The multi-sport event included 25 official and 2 demonstrative sports. Six sport disciplines such as badminton, tennis, table tennis, women’s boxing and men’s gymnastics made their debuts in the event.[6] This was also the second biggest international sport event to be held in the year 2019 in China after hosting the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The Games were organized by the Military Sports Commission of China, Ministry of National Defense of the People’s Republic of China and the military commands (Army in accordance with CISM regulations and the rules of the International Sports Federations.[7] For the first time in the history of the Military World Games, an Olympic village was set up for the athletes prior to the commencement of the Games.[8] The village was officially opened for the athletes following the flag-raising ceremony.[9]

  5. ‘They’re not acting in good faith’, U.S. CENTCOM commander says reacting to Taliban attacks
    https://www.khaama.com/theyre-not-acting-in-good-faith-u-s-centcom-commander-says-reacting-to-taliban-attacks-04516/

“The Commander of the U.S. CENTCOM Marine Corps, General Kenneth F. Mckenzie Jr., has said the Taliban attacks are still too high, warning that the Afghans would be forced to respond if the Taliban did not stop the attacks in another two or three days.

“Taliban attacks are not occurring against coalition forces, they’re not typically occurring in the cities and they’re not occurring against bases. They’re occurring against checkpoints and isolated locations across Afghanistan. But the level of attacks, in my judgment, is not consistent with a group that wants to pursue and be a — be a fair and faithful partner, going forward,” Gen. Mckenzie said in response to a question.

“So those attacks are too high. And we have noted — I’ve seen what the Afghans have said, if they don’t knock them off here in another two or three days, they’re going to begin to respond,” he said, adding that “So I think actually, the Afghan government has been remarkably restrained in responding to the Taliban attacks.”

Raising questions regarding the continued violence, Gen. McKenzie said “So the question is, do the Taliban attacks represent a core strategy of the group, they’re going to continue the attacks? Or is it a splinter of the group and are they not monolithic? We’re still assessing that.”

However, he said “If it’s directed from the top, then obviously that’s not a good thing. Because it shows that they’re not — they not acting in good faith.”

In regards to U.S. troops pullout from Afghanistan, Gen. McKenzie said “We are in the process of drawing down to a level of 8,600. I anticipate that we’ll arrive at that level by the middle of the summer. We believe that any further — as we go beyond this, it’s going to be a conditions-based approach. We have an aspiration to go to a zero level in Afghanistan, but that is very clearly going to be conditions-driven.”

The U.S. and Taliban group signed a peace deal late last month after observing a 7-day reduction in violence. The two sides signed the agreement after almost 18 months of negotiations in Qatari capital of Doha.

However, there are fears that the latest trends in Taliban attacks in remote parts of the country and the growing political tensions could undermine the peace process, specifically the launch of intra-Afghan peace talks.

The State Department had earlier confirmed that the Taliban group has taken steps to stop attacks against the coalition forces and in the cities but the group is still killing too many Afghans in the countryside.

Morgan Ortagus, a State Department spokesperson said the current high level of violence by the Taliban is unacceptable.

“We acknowledge the Taliban have taken steps to stop attacks against the Coalition and in cities,” Ortagus said in a statement, adding that “But they are killing too many Afghans in the countryside.”

She also added “This must change. Violence at these levels risks drawing both sides into a vicious cycle, serves no one, and undermines peace.””

  6. Turkey confirms 18th coronavirus case
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/turkey-confirms-18th-coronavirus-case/1767256

“Turkey announced new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus Sunday as it continued efforts to curb its spread.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter that 12 more people have been diagnosed with the virus, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 18.

He said that among these, two people who had contact with the first case had tested positive for the virus.

Koca also disclosed where some of the patients had originated from.

He said seven of the confirmed cases had come from Europe and three from the U.S.

“Every detected case and every isolation is a security measure for all of us,” he noted.

After emerging in Wuhan, China last December, the virus, officially known as COVID-19, has spread to at least 141 countries and territories.

The global death toll from the virus has surpassed 5,700, with more than 152,000 cases confirmed worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.”

  8. Exclusive – Von Storch: Turkey Should Be Removed from NATO Following Migrant ‘Aggression’
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/03/15/exclusive-von-storch-turkey-removed-nato-migrant-aggression/

“Deputy leader of the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party Beatrix von Storch has slammed the Turkish government for opening its borders to Europe, demanding that the country be removed from the NATO military alliance.

Ms von Storch commented on the situation along the Greek border, where thousands of migrants have gathered, in an interview with Breitbart London this week, stating that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government had committed an “act of aggression” by opening the border.

“First of all, what is our approach to this situation? We stand with Greece. This is, I think, the bottom line. We have to strengthen the Greek border and border police and we should do everything we can to help them keep the border clear,” von Storch said.

On the actions of President Erdogan, Ms von Storch said: “It’s an act of aggression, what he is proposing. It’s the fight of an Islamic country against a small Christian country and he did it with purpose. He uses it as a weapon.”

The AfD deputy leader went on to note the multiple times that Erdogan has threatened the European Union, including as recently as last December when he stated that migrants displaced by military activity in the Syrian province of Idlib could go on to Europe.

Von Storch also referenced threats by Erdogan to transport migrants into buses and ship them to the border. The Turkish government has been accused of bussing in migrants to the Greek border earlier this month as well as transporting them to the area by train.

Many have questioned the suitability of Turkey within the NATO alliance, of which Greece is also a member, following Erdogan’s latest action — and Ms von Storch is no exception.

“This is in our basic programme, we have included a passage that says Turkey shouldn’t be a member of NATO. Turkey is not alongside all of our national interests and the interests of Western societies,” she said.

“[Erdogan] is not acting as a member, he is acting like a threat and an opponent of the NATO alliance,” she added.

While Turkey has called for aid from NATO in recent weeks to help with the migrant crisis, not everyone within Erdogan’s own AKP party is supportive of the country remaining a NATO member.

In 2017, MP Samil Tayyar said Turkey should leave NATO, accusing the alliance of helping stage a military coup in the country in 1980 and adding that “NATO has become a threat and is spreading terror organisations across the region.”

  10. First inmate to be kept locked up in wake of terror attacks
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1255639/terror-attacks-UK-far-right-terrorist-converted-muslim-locked-up

“A FAR-RIGHT terrorist who allegedly became a Muslim extremist while behind bars has had his prison time extended after a spate of attacks by inmates released early.

The “model” prisoner had befriended Streatham knifeman Sudesh Amman while in jail. He had reached the point in his sentence where he should have gained automatic release but it was believed he was still a threat. In the first case of its kind, prison officials told Westminster magistrates they received intelligence that the inmate, known as X, poses a “high risk to the public” as he believes in extremist Islamic ideology. There are also fears that he could have learned tricks from other prisoners to escape detection.

Guards were concerned when he prayed for his friend Amman who was shot dead after stabbing people in Streatham, south London, last month after his release.

He appeared upset by the death and “did not believe him to be a bad person”.

Prison psychologists also fear he fits the profile of a terrorist, saying he has a “grandiosity bordering on narcissism”, and was likely to carry out an attack if it would hold him in esteem with a peer group that holds his extreme views.

Despite the Government rushing through emergency legislation on February 28 to prevent the release of those they thought might still be dangerous, X was detained under a different law from 2002. While that was designed to be used for inmates who show bad behaviour while incarcerated, this is believed to be the first time that it has been used to keep a model prisoner locked up.

Rosemary Davidson, for the Government, said: “What we have is the possibility of a high-risk and highly vulnerable prisoner being released into a high-risk environment.

“There is a pattern of three terrorist tragic offences in just three months, basically one a month, since late November.

“These are individuals who follow a common modus operandi.”

Prison officials feared he may carry out other terrorist attacks in the wake of the Fishmongers’ Hall attack last November, the attempted murder of a prison officer at Whitemoor jail in January and the Streatham stabbings.

At Fishmongers Hall, released terrorist Usman Khan killed two people.

The governor in charge of the prison said X should stay in jail so more work could be done on rehabilitating him.

He had concerns after X and the Streatham terrorist appeared to have regularly said hello to each other and may have met in Islamic classes with imams.

He said: “Our concern is that we see the speed of conversion to Islam while in prison, the dealings that he has had with some of the prisoners, and it mirrors the same ideology and risk factors as other former prisoners who have gone on to commit terrorism. He appeared upset by the death of Sudesh Faraz Amman and did not believe him to be a bad person.”

The governor said while he had been a model prisoner, he feared X could be a high risk to the public on release.

Richard Thomas, representing the prisoner, said: “There have been three terrorist attacks in the space of three months and that is not his fault.”

He added: “It is inappropriate to seek out a longer sentence because the prison has not done the work.

“This application is premised that this is an extreme radical Muslim that poses grave threat and needs to remain in custody for an extra two months.

“We have a well behaved prisoner who has turned to Islam and has engaged as best he can.”

Chief magistrate Emma Arbuthnot said: “X’s views have veered from one extreme to another. He has a deep- seated psychological need to feel part of a group.

“There is a very recent pattern of young men being released from custody committing terrorist offences before they are themselves killed.”

She ordered that X’s release be postponed to May 18.

The Parole Board said it has around 10 terrorism hearings listed over the next four months. They were already in the system before the new legislation and have yet to be concluded.

It added: “We expect a further 20 to 30 cases to be referred to the board as a result of the change in legislation.””
