Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. London panic: Knifeman tasered on train at Peckham station – police race to scene (express, Feb 18, 2020)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1243970/london-news-peckham-stabbing-police-queens-road-station-uk-knife-crime

“POLICE raced to Peckham this afternoon after a man boarded a train with a knife at Queens Road Station, London.

Officers were called to the scene at 12.20pm to reports a man was armed with a knife and having a “mental health crisis”. After police arrived, it appeared the man had already left in a car. He was later located by police after a search of the area.

The man left the vehicle in Queens Road and ran along the railway lines to the train station.

Police said the man then boarded a train, which was busy with passengers, still armed with a knife.

Officers went in pursuit of the armed man who then ran on to a train at the south London station.

A police helicopter was deployed to observe the chase.

Police tasered him on the train while it was stopped the station.

The man is said to be in his 50s and is believed to have been spotted with the knife in a car in Peckham, which sparked the alert.

Initial reports on Twitter from those claiming to be at the scene said people had been stabbed. However, police said no one was injured in the chaos.

London Ambulance Service have attended the scene and the man has been detained under the Mental Health Act…”

Trump pick for Fed seat takes bipartisan fire

Senators in both parties voiced deep concerns Thursday about one of President Trump’s picks to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, raising doubts about the nominee’s ability to win confirmation.

Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Banking Committee questioned whether Judy Shelton, a former Trump campaign adviser, should be considered for the Fed governor post given her controversial views on central bank independence, the gold standard and core tenets of economic policy.

Shelton insisted that her unique perspectives would “strengthen the discussion” and would not prevent her from collaborating with other Fed officials.

“I don’t claim to be in the mainstream of economists,” Shelton told lawmakers at her confirmation hearing Thursday.

But senators across the ideological spectrum made clear that Shelton’s explanation of her lengthy paper trail did little to soothe their concerns.

“If you were on the Fed, how would you work with the other members?” asked Sen. Richard Shelby (Ala.), the senior Republican on the Banking panel. “Could you work with them with the goal of price stability and full employment, or would you really be an outlier?”

Richard: If Trump can get her on the Fed Board we may have found someone who will try to find a work around the mess the Keynesians have got us into.

    • Thanks Richard. It also speaks to the absurd reaction when a single, real, hard money ideologue is nominated to the Fed. It’s as if the President has asked the chickens if they’ll allow a fox into the hen house. They’re agog over the prospect when it is precisely what the country needs at a time of insurmountable debt. It also speaks volumes about the unspoken sentiments of this President regarding money.

      • Yup, if the worlds economy crashes during the Wuflu pandemic having a hard money person on the Fed Board would help a lot.

You gotta love the way Trump can make the libs show what they really are.

“A member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed in bombardment in Syria’s Aleppo on Tuesday, February 18, Fars news agency reported.

“Hamidreza Babelkhani … was martyred this morning in a rocket strike,” said the Iranian news agency, which is close to ultra-conservatives in the Islamic republic.

  4. Turkey arrests suspected former ISIS executioner in Bursa
    https://thedefensepost.com/2020/02/18/turkey-arrests-suspected-former-isis-executioner-busra/

“Turkish police have arrested a suspected former executioner for Islamic State in Syria, who became a gas repairman when he returned to civilian life in Turkey, local media reported on Tuesday, February 18.

The 50-year-old Syrian, known by his nickname “Abu Taki al-Shami,” was arrested at a construction site on Monday in the Bursa province of northwest Turkey, state news agency Anadolu said.

The agency described him as an executioner for a senior ISIS leader in the Deir Ezzor region of eastern Syria, a former stronghold of the extremist group.

A video of his arrest showed him in work clothes and closely shaved.

It is alleged he is the same man videoed several years ago in Syria with a full beard, killing a civilian with a shot to the back of the head.

His arrest led to the detention of three others in Bursa on Tuesday over alleged ISIS links, Anadolu said.

ISIS held vast swathes of territory across Syria and Iraq from its rise in 2014 until its military defeat last year.

Turkey, which supported the rebellion against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, was accused by its allies of failing to sufficiently crack down on foreign jihadists crossing Turkish territory to join ISIS.

But Turkish authorities cracked down heavily on jihadist cells after a spate of devastating attacks inside Turkey in 2015.”

  5. Not all Uyghurs are terrorists, Turkey tells China
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200218-not-all-uyghurs-are-terrorists-turkey-tells-china/

“Turkey’s foreign minister on Sunday said China should not label all Muslim ethnic Uyghurs as terrorists, following talks with his Chinese counterpart in Germany, AFP reported.

“Whether Turk, Uyghur Turk, Han Chinese, Buddhist or Christian … it is not right to call all Uyghur Turks terrorists just because one or two terrorists came from a certain ethnic group. And, it is not [right] to target all Uyghurs because of their belief and ethnicity,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters.

The Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim Turkic-speaking ethnic group primarily from China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang, have been subject to religious and ethnic persecution by Chinese authorities and in recent years more than 1 million people have been held in detention camps, the United Nations says.

Ankara has condemned China’s “policy of systematic assimilation against the Uyghur Turks” and its treatment of its Muslim ethnic Uyghur people as “a great embarrassment for humanity.”

Most Muslim majority countries, especially the OIC (the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) countries, have been criticised for being silent over China’s crackdown on the Uyghurs. Last year, former Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil criticised Muslim countries for not speaking up for minorities subjected to abuse in China.

Last year, China sent more than 1 million people to re-education camps in the Xinjiang region they say are part of their fight against terror. Detainees describe horrific abuse inside, including rape and sterilisation.

In February 2019, Saudi Arabia expressed its “respect” for Chinese leader Xi Jinping before signing major commercial contracts with the country.

Egypt, which wants Beijing to finance its infrastructure, went so far as to allow Chinese police to come and interrogate Uyghur exiles on its soil in 2017. Even Pakistan – which has been supporting the Rohingyas – has been silent on the Uyghurs as the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative proceeds in the country.

“There is less solidarity than there is for the Palestinian or Rohingya causes,” noted Sophie Richardson, director for China at Human Rights Watch in an interview with France 24. “China has managed to win these countries’ support because they need Chinese investment,” she added.

UN members are also divided on the Uyghur issue. In 2019, the UK led 22 other countries at the United Nations in condemning China over the country’s detention of Muslims. Yet the UK government is also promoting a Chinese surveillance company that has been blacklisted by the US after it was “implicated” in human rights violations against the country’s Uyghur Muslim minority.

Shortly after the UK’s statement, China’s ally Belarus made its own statement on behalf of 54 countries voicing approval of China’s counter terrorism programme in Xinjiang.”

  6. French academics to face trial in Iran for ‘anti-regime propaganda’
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2020/2/18/french-academics-to-face-trial-for-anti-iran-propaganda

“Two French academics held in Iran where they are accused of plotting against national security will go on trial on March 3, their lawyer said on Tuesday.

Fariba Adelkhah and Roland Marchal, both researchers at Sciences Po University in Paris, were detained in the Islamic republic in June 2019 and are being held in Evin prison in Tehran.

“We saw the indictment yesterday. The date for the trial was set yesterday for March 3,” lawyer Said Dehghan told AFP.

Adelkhah faces charges of “propaganda against the system” and “colluding to commit acts against national security”, he said.

Marchal was accused of “colluding to commit acts against national security”.

Speaking a short time earlier in a televised news conference, Iran’s judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said the academics had already been convicted.

“They were tried in the presence of their lawyer, and convicted and are currently undergoing their sentence,” said Esmaili, without elaborating further.

But their lawyer said this was not the case.

“I deny this,” Dehghan told AFP. “We are preparing our defence.”

Adelkhah, a specialist in Shia Islam, last week ended a six-week hunger strike that she had reportedly begun to demand the release of Marchal amid concerns about his health.

Marchal, an expert on East Africa, was reportedly arrested when visiting Adelkhah.

The detention of the pair has raised tensions between Iran and France.

On Tuesday, France said Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian had called for their “release without delay” during talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday in Munich.

A spokesman for the French foreign ministry called on Tuesday for “consular access, which must be regular and in accordance with Iran’s international commitments, and… the release of our compatriots”.

Iran, which does not recognise dual nationality, has repeatedly criticised France for what it calls its “interference” in Adelkhah’s case…”

  7. Turkey tells Russia it will push ahead with Idlib operation against Syria regime
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2020/2/18/turkey-tells-russia-it-will-start-idlib-operation

“Turkey has informed Russia that it has completed preparations for a military operation in Idlib province and that troops were on ready to take on Syrian regime forces, Turkish state media reported on Tuesday.

Omer Celik, spokesperson for governing Justice and Development Party (AKP), told Anadolu news agency that unless Moscow’s ally, Bashar Al-Assad, withdraws his forces areas recently taken from the opposition in Idlib province, then Turkish troops could take military action in Syria.

“Celik underlined that Russia, an ally of the Syrian regime, was ‘clearly’ informed about Turkey’s stance in the region,” the Turkish news agency report.

He said that Turkish officials told Russia that Turkey was ready to take military action if the Syrian regime did not withdraw past boundaries specified in a previous de-escalation deal, likely referring to the 2018 Sochi agreement.

The Syrian regime launched a bloody assault on opposition areas of Idlib and Aleppo provinces in December, ignoring a Russian-Turkish ceasefire.

Russia has aided the regime ground offensive with air strikes, leading to the killing hundreds of people and uprooting 900,000 civilians who have headed towards the closed Turkish border.

Hospitals, homes and schools have been targeted in the bombing, with Ankara urging regime troops to withdraw from Idlib province or face a military response.

Turkish and Russian officials have held two rounds of talks in a bid to avoid a direct confrontation, but the Syrian regime has pushed on with its offensive in Aleppo and Idlib provinces.

The UN has warned of a humanitarian crisis in Idlib province due to the regime assault and acknowledged that the vast majority of civilians deaths have been caused by regime forces.

“In all, since 1 January this year, during the Syrian government’s latest major military offensive to retake key areas in Idlib and Aleppo, we have recorded the deaths of 299 civilians in this region of Syria,” Rupert Colville, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), told reporters on Tuesday.

“Around 93 per cent of those deaths were caused by the Syrian government and its allies.”

Whole towns and cities, such as Saraqeb and Maarat Al-Numan, have been emptied in the regime assault.

Hundreds of thousands of refugees – mostly children – have been forced to sleep outdoors in freezing temperatures due to camps being at full capacity.

At least 500,000 people have been killed in the Syria war, the vast majority civilians in regime assaults.”

  8. Saudi forces open fire on tribal fighters in Yemen’s east
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2020/2/18/saudi-forces-spark-clashes-tribes-in-yemens-east

“Fighting broke out between Saudi forces and tribal fighters, in eastern Yemen’s Al-Mahra governorate, The New Arab’s Arabic-language correspondent reported on Tuesday.

Saudi forces attempted to storm a cargo port in the town of Shahn, which lies on the border with Oman, during which they opened fire and injured a number of fighters

The Saudi-led coalition has not yet issued a statement confirming the incident, however the al-Mahra peoples’ sit-in committee denounced the attempted “Saudi intrusion” in a statement published on Facebook.

“The committee condemns these practices and violations committed by the Saudi occupation and its militias against our people,” it said. “It constitutes a flagrant violation of Yemeni sovereignty and national identity.”…”

  9. France to Start Training Native Imams
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2020/02/293914/france-to-start-training-native-imams/

“France will stop bringing Imams, mosque leaders, from Islamic countries, including Morocco, and start training its own Imams, revealed a leaked official document.

The document, shared by French magazine Le Point on Saturday, February 15, is an inter-ministerial communique explaining President Emmanuel Macron’s strategy to combat separatism and Islamism.

The communique, dating back to January, includes four axes to put an end to Islamist extremism. A key pillar in the plan is ending the system of “detached Imams” from Morocco, Algeria, and Turkey.

“Diplomatic negotiations are underway with these countries,” reads the document entitled “Strategy to Fight Against Islamist and Attacks on Republican Principles.”

In order to cover the needs of French mosques after suspending the partnership with Morocco to send Imams, France will develop “Islamology courses” at universities to train French Imams.

Morocco has been training Imams at the Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of Imams and sending them to work at French mosques for years now. The Kingdom also sends several Quran reciters to France during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Currently, several Islamic countries take part in training Imams and funding French mosques, such as the large al-Nour Mosque in Mulhouse, eastern France, currently under construction with a budget of €11 million and co-funded by Qatar and Kuwait.

    French strategy against Islamism

The document introduces the measures by revealing a national increase in the number of French students enrolled in unofficial religious schools, notably in Islam-based establishments, where the numbers grew by 60% between 2016 and 2018.

Faced with this “alarming” new trend, the French government’s document suggests a total of 25 actions.

The first part of the plan responds to a “strategy of obstruction” in the face of the rise of Islamism. The French government will create departmental cells to combat Islamism. It will also strengthen the control of sports organizations, especially martial arts gyms, shooting ranges, and paintball clubs.

The document also suggests a modification of inheritance laws because “discriminatory practices have been found inspired by Muslim law.”

The second axis of the policy aims to “promote a strategy of alternative offers and coordinated support measures for the districts most affected by the Islamist grip.”

To do so, the plan suggests renewing the educational system and offering “reliable extracurricular support.” The new curricula would help develop critical thinking of adolescents and train them in secularism and gender equality.

The third axis, entitled “setting the rules for municipal elections,” aims to “strengthen the control of legitimacy of acts of communities.”

Finally, the fourth axis tackles the participation of foreign countries in the management of religious establishments.

According to Le Point, Macron is expected to reveal the plan officially in the upcoming days.

    Growing hate in France

Macron’s strategy comes amid the raging debate in France about the rise of terrorist attacks and their alleged links to Islam and migration.

According to recent statistics from the French Ministry of the Interior, France recorded 154 Islamophobic acts and threats in 2019, 1,052 attacks against Christians, and 536 anti-Semitic threats.

The number of attacks against Muslims saw the largest increase, rising by 54% between 2018 and 2019.

Racist incidents also increased sharply from 496 events to 1,142, an increase of 130%.”

    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2020/02/294010/royal-moroccan-navy-assists-111-irregular-migrants-in-mediterranean/

“he Royal Moroccan Navy rescued 111 would-be irregular migrants in the Mediterranean over the weekend.

A military source told Maghreb Arab Press (MAP) that the migrants are mostly from sub-Saharan nations. There were 22 women and two minors among the migrants who were on board inflatable boats.

Morocco’s navy transferred the migrants to the ports of Tangier, Nador, and Al Hoceima, the military source.

Morocco’s security services dismantled 208 human trafficking networks in 2019. The country also aborted 73,973 irregular migration attempts last year.

Morocco’s efforts to curb irregular migration have received praise from several European countries, including Spain.

Spanish Ministry of Interior Fernando Grande Marlaska said that Morocco’s cooperation helped reduce the arrivals of irregular migrants in Spain by 50% in 2019.

“A real partnership with the countries of origin and transit is necessary,” Marlaska said, suggesting that the cooperation with Morocco is exemplary.”

“A preliminary report submitted by the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the Karachi University suggested that the Keamari gas incident, which has claimed at least 14 lives, happened due to “overexposure of soybean dust”.

The mysterious gas has thus far affected over 400 people who have complained of experiencing breathing difficulties, stomach ache and itching in the throat after inhaling the toxic gas.

According to the report, soybean dust related epidemics have already been reported earlier in different parts of the world associated with “morbidity and mortality”.

It also suggested that authorities concerned should take extreme care in unloading the soybean container…”

  12. Greece cannot deny Muslim Turkish minority: Turkey
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/greece-cannot-deny-muslim-turkish-minority-turkey/1737217

“Top Turkish officials on Tuesday slammed Greece’s president for mislabeling the Muslim Turkish minority in a region of Greece bordering Turkey as a “Greek Muslim minority”.

“The president of a country said to be the cradle of democracy again called the Muslim Turkish minority a ‘Greek Muslim minority’,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Twitter, saying this mischaracterization comes “despite all the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights.”

He added: “Whatever you say, Western Thrace’s Turkish minority has been Turkish for centuries, it will remain Turkish..!”

On Sunday, visiting Western Thrace, a Greek region with a large Muslim Turkish population, Prokopis Pavlopoulos claimed that under the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, the Turks of Western Thrace are only a religious minority, whereas the Orthodox Greeks living in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul are a national minority.

In a speech, Pavlopoulos referred to the Greek minority in Istanbul as a “Greek minority,” while using the expression “Greek Muslim Minority” to describe the Turkish minority in Western Thrace.

‘Reprehensible’ to deny Muslim Turkish minority

Omer Celik, spokesman for Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, also blasted the Greek leader.

“It is extremely wrong for Greek President Pavlopoulos to call the Muslim Turkish minority a ‘Muslim Greek Minority’ during his visit to Western Thrace. Denying the identity of the Muslim Turkish minority is a reprehensible act,” he said on Twitter.

Celik urged Pavlopoulos to correctly address the Muslim Turkish minority with “respect for democratic values,” adding that it is “unacceptable” for politicians to launch “systematic attacks against the identity” of Muslim Turks in an EU member country.

For decades Greece has enforced policies suppressing the Muslim Turkish minority of Western Thrace – often in defiance of European court rulings – such as denying them the right to elect their own muftis (religious leaders) or banning the word “Turkish” in the name of associations.

“[The identity of the] Muslim Turkish minority is a historical fact in Western Thrace. Nobody can change this fact. It is a racist approach to call the Muslim Turkish minority the ‘Muslim Greek minority’,” added Celik.

He also said that efforts to change the historical facts about the Turkish community in Western Thrace are in vain, and that it is saddening to see such “racist approaches” in defiance of rulings of the European Court of Human Rights.

“Those who try to portray Western Thrace’s Turkish society as a ‘threat’ and ‘danger’ are harming their democracy.”

Celik said Western Thrace’s Turkish society is a “powerful resource” for Greek democracy.

Athens has claimed that the expression “Turkish minority” is not found in the Treaty of Lausanne, the 1923 pact defining the borders of the modern Turkish state in the aftermath of the Turkish War of Independence.

Greece’s Western Thrace region is home to a Muslim Turkish minority of around 150,000 people.

Next month Pavlopoulos is to be succeeded by Katerina Sakellaropoulou, a former judge, as the Greek parliament in January elected her the country’s first female president.”

  13. Turkey deports 229 foreign terrorist fighters
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/turkey-deports-229-foreign-terrorist-fighters/1737459

“Turkey has deported 229 foreign terrorists, 75 of whom are EU citizens, since its anti-terror operation in Syria, an official from the country’s Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

Abdullah Ayaz, head of Turkey’s migration department, told Anadolu Agency that the struggle against the foreign terrorists was ongoing, adding that since 2011, the country has deported 7,898 terrorists of 102 different nationalities.

He noted that entry bans had been issued for 94,000 foreigners considered to be affiliated with terrorist organizations.

The foreign terrorists will continue to be returned whether their home countries wanted to accept them or not, said Ayaz.

He underlined that foreign terrorist fighters were the responsibility of their home countries, citing UN Security Council resolution 2178, which he said contains agreed-upon measures to block the travel of foreign terrorists and readmit them to their countries of origin.

Some EU officials have announced that they would not accept terrorists in their countries, Ayaz said, adding: “It is not acceptable to try to leave them in our country in any way.”

    Irregular migration

Catching over 450,000 irregular migrants in 2019 — nearly double that of the previous year — Turkey increases its measures against irregular migration every year, said Ayaz.

“Unfortunately, the problems in the source regions of irregular migration continue. A significant portion of irregular migrants come from Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said, adding that migration would likely continue until the unfair distribution of prosperity and income across the world came to an end.

Ayaz denied reports that 1.5 million unregistered Syrians were living in Istanbul, saying the number was in fact 7,000.

With more than 118,000 irregular migrants caught in Istanbul last year and 28,000 in 2019, he added that there were currently more than 3.5 million Syrians in Turkey and over 395,000 that returned to areas in northern Syria cleared of terrorists following Turkey’s anti-terror operations in the region.

On Oct. 9, Turkey launched Operation Peace Spring to eliminate terrorists from northern Syria east of the Euphrates River in order to secure Turkey’s borders, aid in the safe return of Syrian refugees, and ensure Syria’s territorial integrity.

He drew attention to the Syrian Bashar al-Assad regime’s ongoing attacks in the northwestern province of Idlib, which has caused 350,000 people to seek shelter near the Turkish border.

“A cease-fire had been declared, but it is not followed by the regime. As a result, there is movement towards our borders,” said Ayaz, adding that this group would be kept on the Syrian side of the border.

In September 2018, Turkey and Russia agreed to turn Idlib into a de-escalation zone in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited.

But more than 1,800 civilians have been killed in attacks by regime and Russian forces since then, flouting both the 2018 cease-fire and a new one that started on Jan. 12.”

  14. US Supply Militants in NE Syria With Weaponry Used Against Turkish Troops – Russian Military

“There were reports earlier of US military vehicles entering northeastern Syria’s Al-Hasakah province from Iraq, including tanks and engineering equipment.

The Russian centre for Syria reconciliation says the US forces in the northeast of the country are supplying the local militants with large quantities of weaponry and ammunition that is being used against civilians and Turkish troops.

“The US command in the region is intensively saturating the territory east of the Euphrates river with weapons and ammunition. Since the beginning of 2020, 13 military convoys have arrived from Iraq to Syria, which included over 80 armored vehicles and more than 300 trucks loaded with various types of weapons, ammunition and materiel”, Rear Adm. Oleg Zhuravlev said in a daily briefing.

Zhuravlev stressed that the weapon supplies are used both during clashes of numerous militant groups on the territory east of Euphrates and against Turkish troops in northern Syria.

According to Zhuravlev, due to the severe humanitarian situation and constant attacks by militants, civilians are leaving the northeastern region of the country and moving to territories under the control of the Syrian government.

Earlier, Sham FM broadcaster reported that more than 50 US military vehicles arrived in the northeastern province of al-Hasakah from Iraq.

The US forces stationed in Syria also reportedly started the construction of a new military base in the oil-rich al-Hasakah, supposedly with the aim of preventing Russian forces from reaching the Rmelan oil field.

Syria has been engulfed in a devastating civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against various opposition groups, as well as militant factions, including those of Daesh* and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly known as Al-Nusra Front*).

*Daesh (also known as ISIS/ISIL/IS), Al-Nusra Front (also known as Jabhat al-Nusra, Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, or al-Qaeda in Syria) are terrorist groups outlawed in Russia and many other states”
