Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • All of the evidence points to it being deliberate, what we need to know is who was on the plane and/or what was on the plane? Things we probably won’t learn while the current regime is in control.

      • Someone who wanted to “get out of Dodge.” fast. Remember the Canadian Caper? Maybe Iran did, too.

        • It doesn’t have to be American or Israeli, it could be some Eastern European the Russians wanted dead or someone from Saudi or the MB that Iran wanted dead.

      • It was a Russian missile system, wasn’t it? I cant imagine Russia knocking a Ukrainian aircraft down at all can you? Or a Polish one for that matter.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has condemned the arrest of the UK ambassador to Iran as a “flagrant violation of international law”.

Rob Macaire was detained after attending a vigil for those who died when a passenger plane was shot down on Wednesday.

He left when it turned into a protest before being arrested and accused of helping to organise the demonstrations.

Mr Macaire denied taking part in the protests in a tweet on Sunday.

He said he was attending the vigil because it was “normal to want to pay respects”, adding that some of the victims were British.

The ambassador added: “Arresting diplomats is of course illegal, in all countries.”

  2. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who not long ago was — at least according to the polls — a somewhat clear front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, has taken a virtual beating in recent weeks, losing ground to former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders and even Pete Buttigieg.

And her week went from bad to worse, according to Breitbart, as she was apparently heckled at a New Hampshire town hall event and was accused of “siding with terrorists.” An angry person in the crowd confronted the senator, calling her out for taking sides with Iran over President Donald Trump’s drone strike that resulted in the death of Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

  3. ROME — Christian sites in Europe suffered a record number of attacks in the year 2019, with some 3,000 Christian churches, schools, cemeteries, and monuments vandalized, looted, or defaced.

Reports compiling the anti-Christian acts during the year document a range of profanation including arson, defecation, desecration, looting, mockery, Satanism, theft, urination, and vandalism.

“Sadly, 2019 was punctuated by increasing incidents of desecration and vandalism of churches around Europe, along with the 2019 fire at the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which captured worldwide attention,” the director of The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe, Ellen Fantini, told Breitbart News on Saturday.

“In most instances the perpetrators of these acts were unidentified, but the Observatory has documented that churches and other symbols of Christianity in Europe are targets for many groups — from Islamists to radical feminists, LGBT activists to anarchists and self-proclaimed Satanists,” Ms. Fantini said.

In all, some 3,000 Christian churches, schools, cemeteries, and monuments were vandalized, looted or defaced in Europe during 2019, making it a record year for anti-Christian sacrilege.

  4. Three, Including Top Terrorist, Killed in Encounter with Security Forces in Kashmir – Reports (sputniknews, Jan 12, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/india/202001121078014332-three-including-top-terrorist–killed-in-encounter-with-security-forces-in-kashmir—reports/

“India’s restive Kashmir region has witnessed considerably fewer incidents of violence since the federal government revoked Article 370 on 5 August 2019. However, there have been several shoot-outs between militants and security forces in Kashmir.

Three including a top terrorist have been killed in an ongoing struggle between terrorists and security forces in the Gulshanpora area in the Tral sub-district of Pulwama district in South Kashmir on Sunday. The terrorists, belonging to militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, have been identified as Hizb commander Omar Fayaz (alias Hamad Khan), Adil Bashir (alias Abu Dujana) and Faizan Hameed.

Hizbul Mujahideen, founded in 1989, is a Kashmiri militant group, which seeks the independence of Kashmir from India. It is comprised of local Kashmiri youth and has seen many commanders from the town of Tral. Tral is considered by Indian authorities to be a hotbed of militancy due to the presence of Hizbul, which was almost wiped out after the face of the militants in Kashmir, Burhan Wani, was killed in an encounter in 2016.

The 22-year-old militant Omar Fayaz, alias Hamad Khan, emerged as the new face of Hizbul after escaping an encounter in January 2019. After losing all the senior leaders of the group in 2016, Khan had reportedly kept the group intact while maintaining a low profile.

In another encounter on 7 January, one suspected terrorist, Shahid, a resident of Bijbehara town in Kashmir, was killed in a gunfight in the Awantipora area of Pulwama district. As per the police records, he was affiliated with proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen and arms and ammunition were recovered from him.

On the New Year ’s Eve, two Indian soldiers were killed during cordon and search operation in Nowshera sector. The infiltrators were reportedly intercepted in a forest area as they were attempting to enter India from the Pakistan-controlled section of Kashmir.”

  6. Richmond, VA –-(Ammoland.com)- Newly elected lawmakers in the Commonwealth of Virginia voted to ban firearms carried by the public in the state Capitol buildings on Friday, but not for their armed bodyguards.

This move comes ahead in what will be a hard-fought battle between pro-gun and anti-gun politicians and citizens. On Monday, January 20th, 2020, the Virginia Citizens Defense League will be holding its annual Lobby Day. This action by the Democrats in the legislature seems to be a preemptive move in response to the gun rights rally.

    https://www.ammoland.com/2020/01/cowardly-virginia-democrats-ban-public-guns-from-capitol-buildings-video/

Virginia is at the forefront of the national gun-rights battle. In the last election cycle, Bloomberg backed groups dumped millions into supporting anti-gun candidates. With control of all both chambers of the legislature and the Governorship, Democrats have introduced extreme gun control measures such as an “assault firearms” ban, banning of non-government owned indoor ranges, universal background checks, and red flag laws.

    • Virginia gun proposal puts concealed carry agreements with other states in jeopardy

Virginia Democratic Del. Dan Helmer filed a bill Wednesday that would give the commonwealth’s attorney general, Mark Herring, discretion over which states’ carry permits Virginia would continue to recognize.

Virginia’s current concealed carry reciprocity law recognizes every out-of-state concealed carry license, but the new proposal from Helmer could limit the number of out-of-state concealed carry permits Virginia recognizes if Herring deems their carry permit requirements insufficient.

“This is certainly more restrictive than the current process, which recognizes everyone’s permit. He can start saying, well, for this reason or that reason, I’m not going to recognize their permit now,” Virginia lawyer George Lyon of Arsenal Attorneys told the Washington Examiner.

Lyon noted, ”There are provisions where people can be denied a permit. For example, if they’ve had a stalking conviction or if they’ve had a drug conviction or possibly multiple DUI convictions.”

Virginia is home to the headquarters for the National Rifle Association. The legislature flipped from Republican to Democrat after the 2019 election.

Richard: The Dems don’t want people to have the ability to defend themselves this is because they know that most people don’t want the future the Dems are planing for the US. When people weren’t watching the politicians they pushed through very restrictive firearms laws on the Federal and State levels, this started in earnest in the 1960s and continued until the 1980s when the law abiding gun owners started orginizing and gained enough political power to reverse many of the laws that the Dems had forced through.

The Dems started panicking over this when it became apparent that the voters were turning against they communist agenda. They bought the Virginia election thanks to the people thinking that the election of Donald Trump meant they could stop closely watching the Dems and fighting against their Big Brother agenda. They are now using Virginia as a test area to see what happens when they try ramming through the laws that restrict our rights of self defense and start seizing lawfully purchased and owned firearms.

We are now waiting to see what happens if/when the Dems manage to force through their anti freedom laws and try to roll back the clock to the 1970s when people were prosecuted for acting in self defense.

  7. Spain and Gibraltar Detain 47 Migrant Smugglers – Reports (sputniknews, Jan 12, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/202001121078014497-spain-and-gibraltar-detain-47-migrant-smugglers—reports/

“The Spanish National Police and the law enforcement agencies of Gibraltar conducted a joint operation against a criminal group that transported migrants, according to 20 Minutos Editora media otlet.

About 200 Spanish police officers took part in the operation, which was coordinated with the European Police Agency (Europol) as a result of which was 47 people were detained.

The criminal organisation charged migrants from Morocco anywhere from €7-8,000 for their services, which allowed its members to receive more than €1 million in profit from their activities, according to police.

The investigation began in November 2018, when Royal Gibraltar Police detected a significant increase in Moroccans coming from Tangiers arriving in Gibraltar with a stay visa from the United Kingdom.

This visa did not allowed entry into any country within the Schengen Area, which is why they could not enter Spain legally.

The criminal organisation had two branches, one in Morocco and another in the region of Camp de Gibraltar, the report specified.

The group is said to have been engaged in the falsification of documents so that migrants could get visas and get to Gibraltar. From there, illegal immigrants were secretly transported to Spain on SUVs.

The impact of the illicit activity has affected 18 Spanish provinces and five European countries.”

  8. Journalist alleging Obama administration spied on her seeks to reopen case

Media figure Sharyl Attkisson is seeking to reopen her case against Obama administration Justice Department officials over claims they illegally spied on her.

A previous lawsuit Attkisson filed in 2015 alleging civil liberties and other violations was ultimately dismissed. Since then, she claims, new information about the identity of those involved in surveilling her computers and phones from 2011 to 2014 has come to light that warrant new litigation.

“The plaintiffs first acquired the details regarding key individuals involved in the surveillance in August 2019 from a person involved in the wrongdoing who has come forward to provide information,” Attkisson said in a complaint filed on behalf of herself and her family on Friday in federal court in Maryland.

Attkisson also filed similar litigation in federal court in Virginia, where the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit last year affirmed her lawsuit’s dismissal upon appeal.

Attkisson, who worked as a journalist at CBS News during the relevant period, now hosts a Sinclair television show. She also contributes opinion columns to The Hill.

    • This happened while she was exposing the Fast and Furious gun walking program that supposedly was designed to track firearms and arrest criminals. Since the firearms were sold to people who immoderately took them across the border into Mexico it not only didn’t provide evidence to arrest anyone it armed the criminals to that then used the firearms to shoot police officers in both the US and Mexico. During the time she was investigating and reporting on this scandal (CBS fired her for reporting on it) her house was illegally entered on several occasions and her computer hacked.

The Propaganda Media not only ignored the scandal of Obama arming criminals they also ignored the illegal spying on a journalist who was investigating this scandal. It was the media allowing crimes like these that lead to the Deep State thinking they could spy on the Trump Campaign and attempt to frame him and remove him from office. The left has been caught and the new media is exposing their illegal actions, now they are moving towards a civil war (modern slang is moving towards the Bugaloo). Most people reporting on this don’t think it will start i n Virginia (although it may) but think that when/if it starts it will be either during hte 2020 campaign or after Trump is re-elected.

Remember not punishing bad/illegal behavior by politicians is in affect condoning and rewarding the bad/illegal behavior. When you reward the bad behavior of politicians (especially those who think they are the elite who are better then everyone else) you get more bad/illegal behavior and if you ignore it long enough you get a totalitarian government that removes all of your right. We in the nations composing what use to be Western Civilization have allowed the left to gain so much power that in all of our nations they are trying to establish one party rule. Some of our nations are fighting back and are enjoying success in our attempts to regain the freedom our patents thought they were handing down to us. We fight now to regain our freedom and continue to fight until all of the Western Nations are free or the light of individual rights and liberty will go out for many centuries and the New Dark Age will be very long and very brutal.

  9. UN Refugee Mission Head Warns of Growing Displacement of People in Libya (breitbart, Jan 12, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/01/12/un-refugee-mission-head-warns-growing-displacement-people-libya/

“Jean-Paul Cavalieri, head of the Libya mission for the UNHCR, has warned that deteriorating conditions across Libya are producing over 200,000 displaced persons.

Cavalieri made his comments to Italian media this week, saying that many Libyans have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing conflict in the country which will likely add to the estimated hundreds of thousands of migrants already in Libya, Il Giornale reports.

“There are over 217,000 IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) in the country: children, women, men in conditions of extreme risk. And we are unable to access all areas of Libya,” Cavalieri said.

“There are tens of thousands of people in arbitrary detention, fighting for daily survival. The Ministry of Interior can no longer guarantee food and water for everyone,” he added and claimed that some prisoners were even paying to remain in the prisons as they are convinced they will be first in line for emergency evacuations if they stay.

Estimates of exactly how many migrants are in Libya waiting for a chance to cross the Mediterranean into Europe are unclear, with Libya’s Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj claiming that there are as many as 800,000 and said that just a mere 20,000 are located in various camps in the country.

Others, such as infamous German migrant transport NGO ship captain Carola Rackete, have claimed the number is closer to 500,000. Rackete, who was arrested for aiding illegal migration in Italy, demanded last year that the European Union open the gates to all 500,000 migrants and allow them to enter countries within the political bloc.

During the period in which populist anti-mass migration League leader Matteo Salvini served as Italian Interior Minister, the number of migrant landings decreased drastically.

However, since Salvini and the League left the government in September of 2019, the activities of migrant transport NGOs and the number of new arrivals has increased under the unpopular leftist coalition of the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party.”

  10. France 2019 Saw Record 1,457 Cars Burned on New Year’s Eve (breitbart, Jan 12, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/01/12/france-2019-saw-record-1457-cars-burned-new-years-eve/

“France saw 1,457 vehicles set on fire across New Year’s Eve, surpassing the previous record of 1,290 vehicles torched across the country in the previous year, according to figures seen by French radio broadcaster Europe 1.

The figures show a 13 per cent rise in the number of car burnings from 2018, with French police allegedly attempting to keep the number of burned cars under secrecy so as not to “create an escalation”, Europe 1 reports.

French authorities have gone on record claiming that the burnings over the New Year period in 2019 were substantially less serious than the previous year and said that the number of violent incidents towards police had also decreased compared to those that occurred in 2018.

In previous years, the French authorities also remained largely silent on the official car burning figures, and when figures were reported, such as in 2017, the Interior Ministry only counted cars that were directly set on fire and not those that had received damage as a result of fires.

Past figures show that since a low point of 804 burned cars in 2016, the number has risen year on year with 2019’s figures higher than all other years since 2008.

While French authorities remain officially quiet about the figures, signs in some cities, such as Strasbourg where 220 cars were set on fire in what amounted to double the number of 2018, revealed that the problem of car burnings was still a major issue for French police and governments.

Strasbourg also saw several incidents of firefighters being attacked on New Year’s Eve after being ambushed, with Thierry Carbiener, president of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service, describing the youths as “ultra-violent, in organised bands”.

“We are dealing with very mobile groups that light fires for the sole purpose of seeing the firefighters and the police arrive and confront them. We have reached a milestone: they no longer target vehicles but men. They act to hurt them,” he said.

A total of 400 people were arrested over New Year’s Eve in France and a 27-year-old man was killed as a result of an accident involving fireworks.”

  11. Muslims pray for peace in Islamic congregation in Bangladesh (abcnews, Jan 12, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/muslims-pray-peace-islamic-congregation-bangladesh-68226693

“Hundreds of thousands of Muslims raised their hands and prayed for the welfare of the world as they joined a final prayer Sunday in wrapping up a three-day Islamic congregation near Bangladesh’s capital.

The Biswa Ijtema, or World Congregation of Muslims, is one of the largest gatherings of Muslim devotees, held on the sandy banks of the River Turag at Tongi, just north of Dhaka.

The congregation, which is believed to have begun in 1949 as a gathering of Sunni Muslim preachers, draws hundreds of thousands from Bangladesh and abroad. The gathering is apolitical, and the sermons deal with an interpretation of Islam that advocates peace, harmony and brotherhood.

“Oh my Allah, please save Muslims, please pour your blessings, please end all bloodshed through your blessings,” cried an imam who led the final prayer. Many of the devotees burst into tears seeking blessings.

Security was tight, with agencies setting up watchtowers, control rooms and CCTVs. The second phase of the gathering begins on Friday.”

  12. The blue-state exodus gains momentum

Nine years ago I published a piece that asserted, “Voters around the country are concluding it’s better to be red than dead,” applying almost the exact opposite meaning to an old phrase referring to communism. New Census Bureau figures appear to confirm my prediction — mostly.

My point was that many voters were, and are, increasingly fed up with the high taxes, heavy regulations and increasing social wokeness that have come to characterize most blue states — i.e., those dominated by liberal politicians and policies.

I argued that voters wanting to live in a business-friendly, fiscally responsible state that minimizes its tax burden would either vote out the liberals destroying their state’s economy or flee to a red state. The latest Census Bureau report highlights the red-state shift.

  13. First Democratic debate of 2020 could feature only white candidates: Critics
So far, no minority candidates have qualified to appear on stage.

With just days left to qualify for the first Democratic debate of 2020, the stage is is so far shaping up to include only white candidates and unlike the last debate, the chances of at least one candidate of color qualifying before the deadline seem slim.

The deadline to qualify for the Jan. 14 debate, set to be hosted by CNN and The Des Moines Register at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, is Friday at 11:59 p.m. So far, only five of the 14 candidates still running have qualified, and all of them are white: former Vice President Joe Biden, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Several candidates — both current and former — have taken issue with this year’s primary process, including the debate qualifications set by the Democratic National Committee, arguing that a historically diverse primary field has been unnecessarily dwindled down.

  14. California Becomes a Drug Manufacturer

Would readers feel comfortable buying prescription drugs from an organization that can’t keep human poop off the sidewalk? California residents may soon be presented with that very dilemma if Gov. Gavin Newsom is successful in his latest adventure for California taxpayers.

The Wall Street Journal reports, “California would become the first state to contract with generic-drug manufacturers to make prescription medicines to sell to residents, under a plan proposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that aims to control rising health costs.”

This is the latest example of government stepping in to ‘solve’ a problem initially caused by government. Generic drug prices are high due to government interference in the marketplace and burdensome regulatory red tape.

Ideally, consumers should have a wide variety of generics to choose from, produced by a number of manufacturers. The competition between manufacturers would work to reduce prices.

  15. Protesters demand Iran’s leaders quit after military admits it hit plane

DUBAI (Reuters) – Protests erupted across Iran for a second day on Sunday, piling pressure on the leadership after the military admitted it had mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian airliner at a time when Tehran had feared U.S. air strikes.

“They are lying that our enemy is America, our enemy is right here,” a group of protesters outside a university in Tehran chanted, according to video clips posted on Twitter.
    Report Ad

Scores of demonstrators were shown outside another university in the capital and at gatherings in other cities.

Some state-affiliated media also carried reports of university protests, after Saturday’s demonstrations sparked by Iran’s announcement that its military had mistakenly brought down the Ukrainian plane on Wednesday, killing all 176 aboard.

Tehran residents told Reuters police were out in force in the capital on Sunday, as public anger boiled up following days of denials by the military that it was to blame, issued even as Canada and the United States said a missile had brought the plane down.

  16. China says will not change position on Taiwan after landslide election

TAIPEI (Reuters) – China will not change its position that Taiwan belongs to it, Beijing said on Sunday, after President Tsai Ing-wen won re-election and said she would not submit to China’s threats, as state media warned she was courting disaster.

The election campaign was dominated by China’s efforts to get the democratic island to accept Beijing’s rule under a “one country, two systems” model, as well as by anti-government protests in Chinese-ruled Hong Kong.
    Report Ad

“No matter what changes there are to the internal situation in Taiwan, the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

While China says Taiwan is its territory, Taiwan maintains it is an independent country called the Republic of China, its formal name.

Tsai, who has firmly rejected China’s “one country, two systems” model, won another four-year term by a landslide on Saturday, and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secured a majority in parliament.

  17. CNN anchor suggests Iranian ‘death to America’ chants aren’t ‘seriously meant’
By Daily Caller News Foundation January 12, 2020

CNN anchor Erin Burnett said Thursday night that Iranian chants of “death to America” might not actually be “seriously meant.”

Burnett made the remark while interviewing Republican Ohio Rep. Mike Turner, who brought up that “Iran itself continues to have even its entire parliament chant death to America.”

“I will say, I will say, I was in Tehran when they were chanting ‘Death to America’ once. I was at a rally, the people couldn’t have been any friendlier to me personally as an American. It sort of felt like a thing and a trope, as opposed to anything that actually was seriously meant and considered,” Burnett replied. “I understand your point, but having been there my experience was quite different.”

  18. Shrink who declared Trump crazy without exam extends her net to Alan Dershowitz

Brandy X. Lee, the Yale University psychiatry professor, who made headlines in 2018 by diagnosing Donald Trump as too crazy to remain in office, is back in the news. Lee, along with two colleagues, argued in a Boston Globe op-ed that Trump should be removed from office under the so-called Goldwater rule (aka, the Twenty-fifth Amendment), which provides for the removal of a president who is physically or mentally unfit to continue serving.

While liberals were only too happy to jump on the insanity bandwagon, those who actually are sane pointed to a longstanding policy of the American Psychiatric Association, which frowns on performing diagnoses on public figures without interviewing them personally.

Convinced that she was right back then and is right now, Lee has come out with another diagnosis from a distance. This time her target is law scholar Alan Dershowitz, who writes at the Gatestone Institute website that Lee has pronounced him “psychotic” for defending constitutional rights. “Dr. Bandy Lee,” he writes, “has never met me, never examined me, never seen my medical records, and never spoken to anyone close to me. Yet she is prepared to offer a diagnosis of ‘psychosis’.” The fact that Dershowitz voted for Hillary Clinton and considers himself a liberal Democrat seems to bear no weight in Lee’s assessment. (RELATED: Alan Dershowitz: Ousting Trump via 25th Amendment ‘clearly attempt at coup d’état’)

It’s worth noting that Lee doesn’t limit her diagnosis to of psychotic to the former Harvard University law professor. According to a tweet she posted on Jan. 2, she considers any of the deplorables who follow Donald Trump to be psychotic.

Ex-DOJ FISA expert picked to reform FBI deficiencies was vocal critic of Nunes, ardent supporter of Carter Page surveillance
By Daily Caller News Foundation January 12, 2020

A former Justice Department official picked Friday to oversee the FBI’s reforms of its surveillance procedures in the wake of a damning inspector general’s report was one of the many pundits during the Russia probe to defend the bureau’s surveillance of Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

David S. Kris, a former assistant attorney general for national security, was also an outspoken critic of Rep. Devin Nunes and other congressional Republicans who accused the FBI of misleading the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) in applications to wiretap Page.

An inspector general’s (IG) report released Dec. 9, 2019, largely vindicated Republicans and Page. The report identified 17 errors and omissions the FBI made in its four applications to surveil Page. The IG also said the FBI was unable to corroborate allegations that Page was a Russian agent.

Turner shot back that “pretty much your entire life, Iran has chanted ‘Death to America,’ and they have taken actions against Americans, American interests, in ways that are lethal — killing Americans, giving weaponry to people who have intentioned and do kill Americans.” (RELATED: MSNBC Airs Baseless Iranian Propaganda About Dead US Soldiers)

  21. Four Wounded as Seven Mortar Bombs Hit Iraqi Balad Base Hosting US Troops – Reports (sputniknews, Jan 12, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/202001121078016828-seven-mortar-bombs-hit-iraqi-balad-base-hosting-us-troops—reports/

“The Balad military base was a target of last week’s rocket attacks carried out in retaliation for the death of Iranian Quds chief Qasem Soleimani. The attack resulted in no casualties or damage.

Seven mortar bombs have hit the Iraqi Balad Air Base in the north of the country, Reuters quoted military sources as saying. According to sources, four Iraqi soldiers were injured in the incident.

However, AFP cited security forces as saying that the base was hit by just four rockets.

The military installation is an Iraqi Air Force Base situated some 64 kilometres north of the capital Baghdad. The majority of US troops have withdrawn from the base amid rising US-Iranian tensions in recent weeks.

On 4 January, the base came under a rocket attack in the wake of Iranian top military commander Soleimani’s killing by US forces.

Last week, Iraq’s parliament voted to expel US troops from the country and to put a formal end to Iraq’s participation in the US-led anti-Daesh* coalition.”

    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/202001121078016731-lna-claims-to-have-downed-turkish-drone-that-was-attacking-southern-tripoli/

“This comes following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart in Istanbul on 8 January when they urged both sides in the conflict in Libya to start observing a ceasefire from midnight on 12 January.

Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) has shot down a Turkish drone that was carrying mortar rounds in violation of the latest ceasefire between the LNA and the Government of National Accord (GNA), the LNA’s Al-Karama Operations Room said Sunday.

“An enemy Turkish drone that was carrying mortar rounds was shot down. This [the flight] was a violation of the ceasefire,” the operations room’s press office said.
Earlier in the day, the Turkish Defence Ministry said that a ceasefire brokered by Moscow and Ankara in western Libya had been generally observed.

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Istanbul ?on 8 January to discuss the situation in Libya and called on the conflicting sides to observe a ceasefire starting at midnight on 12 January and to sit down for talks.

Libya has been torn by civil war since 2011 when its leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled and killed. The country is divided between Haftar’s Libyan National Army and the UN-backed Government of National Accord.”

  23. Libya’s Eastern-Based Parliament May Ask Egypt for Military Assistance – Speaker (sputniknews, Jan 12, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/africa/202001121078016943-libyas-eastern-based-parliament-may-ask-egypt-for-military-assistance—speaker/

“In early January, the Turkish parliament approved military support for Libya, after which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Ankara had sent troops to the country at the request of the western-based Government of National Accord (GNA).

The eastern-based Libyan parliament, which supports Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA), may ask Egypt for military support in case of foreign interference in the Libyan conflict, the parliament’s speaker, Aguila Saleh, said on Sunday, in the wake of Turkey’s decision to send troops to Libya.

“I urge you to take a bold position … We may be forced to ask for the involvement of the Egyptian armed forces if we face foreign intervention in our country,” Saleh said live on Egyptian television.

On Wednesday, Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a comprehensive ceasefire in Libya starting midnight on 12 January. They also urged all conflict parties to begin negotiations.

The two opposing governments in Libya struck a ceasefire deal that began at midnight. However, the Government of National Accord accused the Libyan Armed Forces of almost immediately violating the ceasefires in the Salah ad-Din and Wadi ar-Rabiya districts of Tripoli.

After the ouster and assassination of then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country was plunged into a brutal civil war. Today, Libya is divided between two centres of power: an elected parliament in the country’s east, and the UN-backed GNA in the west.”

  24. Soleimani’s Death Opens Door to Alternative Security Arrangements in the Gulf

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The killing by the US of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani has widened the opening for a potential restructuring of the Gulf’s security architecture.

In line with an Iranian plan launched at last year’s UN General Assembly by president Hassan Rouhani that calls for a security architecture that would exclude external forces, Tehran is arguing that an expulsion of all US troops from the Middle East would constitute revenge for the killing by the US of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Quds force.

While it likely would be a drawn-out process, Iraq’s parliament took a first step in this direction by unanimously asking the government, in the absence of Kurdish and Sunni Muslim deputies, to expel US forces from the country.

Ultimately, Iran may get only part of what it wants, at best.

Iraqi PM Adel Abdul Mahdi has dialed back his initial support for parliament’s demand, saying any withdrawal would involve only US combat forces and not training and logistical support for the Iraqi military.

Similarly, Gulf states like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar are unlikely to expel US forces and bases.

  27. California Water Infected With Increasing Fecal Bacteria As Democrats Allow Homeless Crisis to Worsen

It’s always entertaining to see diametrically opposing leftist movements collide with one another. Now we have the environmental groups squaring off against the homeless advocacy groups, as California’s homeless crisis is leading to mass contamination of the rivers and streams. Rather than going through sewage treatment, human waste from the homeless is ending up directly in the water ways.

    California Health Line reports:

“We should all work together to clean up these hazardous waste and homeless sites before the whole city rots away,” Trump tweeted about San Francisco on Oct. 26. “Very bad and dangerous conditions, also severely impacting the Pacific Ocean and water supply.”

San Francisco officials were quick to dispute Trump’s claims. But some of California’s most prized rivers, beaches and streams are indeed contaminated with levels of fecal bacteria that exceed state limits, threatening kayakers, swimmers — and the state’s reputation as a bastion of environmental protection.

The presence of fecal bacteria in water is usually the result of problems with sewer systems and septic tanks. But water quality officials agree that the source of at least some of the fecal bacteria is California’s growing homeless population, most of whom don’t have reliable access to toilets.

“I’ve carried 5-gallon buckets that were unambiguously being used as toilets,” said David Gibson, executive officer of the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, describing his experience cleaning up homeless encampments. “They were taking it to the San Diego River, dumping it there, and rinsing it out there.”

Fecal contamination of waterways is a widespread problem and becoming more urgent in states with large homeless populations. In Seattle, homeless people living in RVs are accused of dumping raw sewage straight into storm drains, which flows directly to local waterways. In Oregon, workers cleaning up homeless camps along the Willamette River in Eugene routinely find feces and needles.

The Trump administration has fixated on California’s homeless population in particular as a potent source of pollution.

In addition to Trump’s tweets, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sent a letter to California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 26 alleging that the state’s lack of urgency on homelessness threatens public health by polluting nearby water with untreated human waste. It then issued a notice to San Francisco accusing it of violating the federal Clean Water Act.

Jared Blumenfeld, secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency, responded by accusing the federal EPA of retreating on clean water protection, and called the administration’s focus on the environmental impact of homelessness “sensationalized” and “misguided.”

When it comes to water, scientists look for E. coli and other bacteria to determine levels of fecal contamination. While E. coli is present in both human and animal feces, human fecal contamination is particularly dangerous because it can transmit diseases that affect people, including hepatitis A and cholera.

Most people are not at risk of getting sick unless they drink the water, or if pathogens enter open cuts or sores, said Richard Ambrose, a professor in the department of environmental health sciences at UCLA. Homeless people face the highest risk because they are more likely to wash or wade in the water and have less access to toilets and showers, he said.

in Sacramento, regulators have been measuring elevated fecal bacteria levels in the lower American River for more than three years. Located near downtown Sacramento, it is a popular destination for water sports, even as hundreds of homeless people camp nearby.

Some recreational areas, including Tiscornia Beach, where families picnic, BBQ and wade in the river, had E. coli levels so high in the past year that they hit the upper limits of what the water board’s laboratories could measure — more than seven times higher than the state standard, said Adam Laputz, assistant executive officer of the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Contamination from homeless camps is so easy to observe — and smell — that there is no “need to monitor to know there’s a problem,” said Thomas Mumley, executive officer of the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, which stretches from Napa County to Santa Clara County.

If there are no bathrooms in or near a homeless encampment, “we can assume there’s a discharge of waste” where there shouldn’t be, he said.

This past October, the Environmental Protection Agency sent a nastygram to San Francisco officials, naming all of the regulations that the liberal utopia is in violation of.

  28. U.S. Forces Followed Soleimani On Road During Airstrike, Reveal What They Found On Him

U.S. Special Operations forces were only a few hundred yards behind Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force (IRGC-QF) commander Qasem Soleimani last week when an American Reaper drone shot a hellfire missile at his vehicle, killing him, as he and others left Baghdad International Airport.

The Army Special Operations soldiers arrived on scene moments after the drone strike eliminated one of the world’s most notorious terrorists to collect a “bomb damage assessment.”

Soleimani’s body was on fire, grossly disfigured, and missing limbs, according to Leland Vittert of Fox News.

“The source told Fox News that U.S. forces dragged Soleimani’s body away from the scene and extinguished the fire before formally identifying the Iranian general,” Fox News reported. “They took photos of his possessions, which included books of poetry and wads of cash. He was also carrying a pistol and an assault rifle.”

“Under normal circumstances, Soleimani’s phone and other electronics would be taken away for forensic analysis. However, the missile strike and ensuing fire made such an investigation impossible,” Fox News added.

A source who saw the photos and who served in Iraq told Fox News that Soleimani died the same way that many U.S. soldiers died in Iraq who were killed by IEDs that came from Soleimani.

  30. The Soleimani Killing: Trump’s New Approach to the War on Terror

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Soft power and coercive diplomacy tools have not worked for almost 20 years against “peaceful Iran” (as Obama used to call it), and America has opted instead to exercise hard power. Trump’s order to kill Qassem Soleimani exposes once again the vast gap between the US and Europe on the problem of Iran.

In 2001, President George Bush launched the Global War on Terror doctrine, articulated in his “overcome darkness with the light of hope” speech at the UN. His successor, Barack Obama, took a different approach to the fight against global terrorism, as characterized by his conciliatory “new beginning” Cairo speech in 2009.

Today, a third approach to the war on terror is unfolding. By ordering the targeted killing of Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani, Donald Trump essentially declared that no individual or nation responsible for the spread of global terror is immune from American action. If he follows through on that threat with further action, the US might find itself back in its former position of global sheriff.

  32. Turkey’s No Longer Best-Kept Secret: Islamized Christians

    by Vasileios Meichanetsidis
    January 12, 2020 at 5:00 am

A recent statement by a Turkish mayor belonging to President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) was particularly noteworthy in the wake of the US Senate’s December 12 resolution to “commemorate the Armenian Genocide through official recognition and remembrance.”

Mayor Hayrettin Güngör of Kahramanmara? was caught on camera telling a woman from Trabzon, “We made you Muslim.”

He seems to have been referring to the fact that Trabzon, as other provinces in the Black Sea region, used to be a Greek Orthodox Christian city, which is now Muslim — in spite of the thousands of people in the area who still speak the Pontic Greek dialect.

After an angry public response to the statement, Güngör phoned the mayor of Trabzon to apologize. As offensive as his claim may have been, however, he was actually revealing a tragic truth: that many Turkish citizens are descendants of forcibly Islamized Christians.

Prior to the Turkish invasion of Asia Minor in the 11th century — and the fall of Constantinople (Istanbul) to Ottoman Turks in the 15th century — the lands that comprise contemporary Turkey were part of the Greek-speaking Christian Byzantine Empire.

  33. The General’s Death Upsets Iran’s Plan

    by Amir Taheri
    January 12, 2020 at 4:00 am

While analysts and policymakers are busy speculating on ways that Tehran’s ruling mullahs might avenge the killing of their most hyped general, the real question that needs considering may be elsewhere.

The question is: what effect Soleimani’s death might have on the power struggle that, though currently put on hold, is certain to resume with greater vigor in Tehran.

Tehran’s propaganda tries to sell Soleimani as a kind of superman who, almost single-handedly, brought Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and parts of Afghanistan and Yemen under Iranian control while driving Americans out of the Middle East and crushing ISIS’s so-called Caliphate which tried to rival the Islamic Republic in Tehran. Soleimani himself did a lot to promote that image and, doing that, received much help from Western, especially American, and Israeli media that bought the bundle of goods from Tehran.
