1. South Yorkshire Police ‘failed to act’ over girl’s rape claims
A girl who was sexually exploited by a gang that used her as a “piece of meat” found police took “no effective action” to stop it, a court heard.
Nine men deny raping the teenager in Sheffield.
Prosecutors said she was used as “an object” and abused by the gang between 2010 and 2012.
The girl alerted South Yorkshire Police in 2011 but no investigation was carried out or crime recorded, Sheffield Crown Court heard.
Jurors were told the force “did nothing more than submit an intelligence report” about her claims that she was being raped and used for underage sex.
Prosecutor Peter Hampton said: “When [she] did tell the authorities, she found no effective action was taken to stop it.”

Mr Hampton said the girl first disclosed some of what had happened to her when she was interviewed by officers in 2011, aged 15.
He told the court the complainant distrusted the authorities and that despite telling police about one rape and another “incident of sex with adult men as a minor”, “no crime was recorded by the force and no investigation, in reality, followed.”
2. Man busted for killing elderly woman claimed ‘his pants fell’ before alleged sex assault
The man accused of sexually assaulting and killing a 92-year-old woman in Queens claimed to cops that he’d been trying to help the old woman — but then he lost his balance, his belt broke, his pants fell down and his genitals accidentally came in contact with hers, it was revealed in court Friday.
The suspect, 21-year-old Reeaz Khan, told detectives that he found the woman, Maria Fuertes, on the ground near Liberty Avenue and 127th Street in Richmond Hill at about midnight on Monday and tried to help her, a prosecutor said at his arraignment on Friday.
Khan told detectives, “He fell down, his belt broke, his pants fell down and his penis fell near her vagina,” the prosecutor, Joseph Grasso, said in court.
At that point, something came over him, Khan claimed.
“Defendant then stated that he did lift up her skirt and he tried to put his penis inside of her,” the prosecutor added.

4. Free speech victory as Court rules against University of Alberta $17,500 security
EDMONTON: The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (jccf.ca) is pleased with the January 6, 2020 decision of the Alberta Court of Appeal, which rejects the University of Alberta’s imposition of a $17,500 security fee on UAlberta Pro-Life. Demanded by the University in 2016, this security fee had prevented the small student club from hosting educational displays on campus. Analysis of the decision is ongoing.
The case arose in March of 2015, when the University of Alberta condoned the behaviour of a mob that physically obstructed a peaceful, stationary pro-life display on campus, which had been authorized and approved by the University. The mob used sheets, towels, banners, and mega-phones, making it impossible for passers-by to view the signs. The mob effectively silenced intellectual discussion and inquiry, in violation of the Code of Student Behaviour. Prior to this physical obstruction and disruption of a university-approved campus event, the University’s president had stated publicly that the pro-life group was entitled to express its opinions on campus. Then-president Indira Samarasekera stated the University must facilitate and protect the peaceful expression of all views, regardless of popularity.
