Residents of the senior citizens’ centre on the banks of the river Ihme in Hanover complain about threats and harassment by drug dealers on their doorstep. According to the newspaper HAZ, one of the residents was called a “shit woman” and pelted with stones. She hardly dares to go out with her dog, she is quoted in the newspaper. Once one of these men passed by and whispered in her ear: “I’ll kill you, you’re dead.” Calls to the police and letters to the municipality and the German parliament have not been of any use so far. The police are coming, but the drug dealers will be back soon. Meanwhile, there is a list of signatures signed by forty residents.Two years ago, the Internet portal halloLindenLimmer.de already made an inquiry to the police about the violence of the dealer scene there on the banks of the river Ihme. “On Saturday, Multan-based academic Junaid Hafeez became the latest to be given the death sentence for blasphemy in Pakistan.
The 33-year-old former lecturer at Bahauddin Zakariya University had been arrested in 2013 over alleged “blasphemous” comments on Facebook, after accusations from an Islamist group that had explicitly taken issues with Hafeez’s “liberal views.”
After six years of solitary confinement, and a problematic trial, Hafeez has been sent to the gallows by a sessions court for “outraging religious sentiments.”
Pakistan is one of 13 countries where blasphemy is punishable by death. The constitution’s Islam-specific clauses, notably Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code, maintain that the capital punishment is solely for sacrilege against the majority’s religion in the Muslim-dominated country.
Furthermore, given that unlike Saudi Arabia or Iran, Pakistan hasn’t executed anyone for blasphemy, apostasy, or atheism, the existence of the death penalty for blasphemy against Islam has been taken up by mobs as sanction for vigilante killings. As a result, there have been over 75 extrajudicial executions, and more than 4,000 blasphemy cases registered since the inclusion of Section 295-C in the PPC in 1986.”

US Troops Exit From West Africa May Hamper UK Clout There, Former British Defence Minister Claims (sputniknews, Dec 27, 2019)

“Earlier this week, US media said that the Pentagon is considering a partial or complete pullout of American troops from West Africa and that an initial decision on the matter is expected already in January.
Former UK Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood has warned of severe consequences from the possible withdrawal of US forces from West Africa.
The Times quoted the Conservative MP as saying on Friday, that the potential pullout of US troops would “have a knock-on effect to Britain’s ability to keep this part of Africa secure”.
It will also force the UK to “rethink the scale of our commitment and how we’re able to wield influence in a very unstable region”, Ellwood added.
He apparently was referring to current and planned British missions in the Sahel region to tackle Islamist terrorist groups and train local security forces.
Commenting on the Pentagon’s plan to focus on grappling with issues related to the growing clout of China and Russia, Ellwood called it a “strategic error”.
“The irony is they [the US] want to pivot, to stand up to a rising China and resurgent Russia, but these are the countries that will take advantage of its withdrawal from Africa”, he asserted.
British Armed Forces Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan, for her part, said that “what the US does, won’t affect our military and other investment in Africa”.
Pentagon Considering Major US Troops Pullback From Africa – Report
The remarks come a few days after the New York Times cited unnamed sources as saying that the US Department of Defence is contemplating scaling down or completely withdrawing US troops from West Africa, as the first phase of US reallocating its forces to address the great power competition with China and Russia
The sources claimed that the pullback would include abandoning a recently built drone base in Niger and ending assistance to French forces battling militants in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
As far as the UK military is concerned, the Royal Air Force (RAF) has 100 personnel and three helicopters in Mali to support the French mission there. Additionally, 250 UK soldiers are due to be deployed to Mali to join the UN peacekeeping mission next summer.
In this context, The Times quoted Michael Clarke, former director of the Royal United Services Institute, a defence think tank, as saying that “Downing Street and the [UK] Ministry of Defence will “certainly” be concerned over reports about the US troops’ planned pullout from West Africa.
“The security situation in Mali has been steadily deteriorating as the Sahel region falls increasingly into fragmentation, tribalism and terrorist franchises […]. It is in danger of escalating to a full-blown counterinsurgency war”, Clarke claimed.
US Defence Secretary Esper, in turn, has repeatedly underscored his ultimate goal of reducing counterterrorism deployments throughout the world, so that thousands of US troops can be either return home for retraining or be dispatched to the Indo-Pacific region to confront the more significant challenges allegedly emanating from Moscow and Beijing.”

Japan’s cabinet of ministers has approved the deployment of the country’s Maritime Self-Defence Force to the Middle East, with the mission said to be the first of its kind since legislation expanding the military’s right to operate abroad stepped into effect four years ago, Kyodo News has reported, citing government sources.
The deployment, which required no parliamentary approval, is expected to include a helicopter-equipped destroyer and several Lockheed P-3C Orion patrol planes, along with about 260 naval personnel.
According to Kyodo’s sources, the operation, based in the Gulf of Oman and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, will be a “survey and research” mission aimed at ensuring security in a crucial maritime route through which as much as 90 percent of Japan’s Middle East-sourced oil passes.
The mission is limited in scope to the protection of Japanese shipping vessels, and will not see operations in the sensitive Strait of Hormuz area. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reportedly approved the mission personally during talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last week. The police had seized heroin worth around $400 million at the Wagah-Attari border on 29 June 2019.
India’s top anti-terror body, the National Investigative Agency (NIA) – charged 11 people including six absconders and four companies before a special court on Friday, in a case related to the seizure of 532 kg of heroin at the Attari border.
The agency said the drug trade is being used to fund terrorism in the country.
“Investigations have established that the accused formed a terrorist gang to bring many consignments of narcotics to India. A vast network of Hawala and other informal channels have (sic) been used to smuggle narcotics into India through the legitimate trade route between India and Pakistan in the garb of importing rock salt,” the NIA said in its chargesheet.
The investigation has been able to establish an international conspiracy in which nationals of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indians from Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi have come to light so far.
The NIA said it’s a case of narco-terrorism, having national and international implications with evidence of the generation of funds through the proceeds from the sale of narcotics smuggled from across international borders. The agency said further investigations continue.
The NIA had taken over the case from Punjab Police and Customs Department in July this year after the main accused Gurpinder Singh died under mysterious circumstances in an Amritsar jail in Punjab State.
The agency also revealed that using SWIFT– one of the largest financial messaging systems in the world–the drug peddlers were sending the consignment money to a CitiBank based in New York.”

Security was tightened on Friday, as Delhi Police feared an escalation of violent protests in some sensitive areas like the south and eastern parts of the metropolis. The controversial 2019 Citizenship Amendment Act seeks to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants from six religious minorities – Hindus, Parsis, Jains, Christians, Buddhists and Sikhs from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, if they arrived in India before 1 January 2015. But it excludes this privilege to Muslims from these countries, which opponents of the law say is discriminatory and against the Constitution of India.”

“Saudi Arabia and a coalition of mostly Gulf State allies began a military operation in Yemen in 2015, seeking to restore the southern Arabian country’s ousted government to power.
The Saudi-led coalition’s inability to secure a speedy victory after launching its military operation in Yemen nearly five years ago has put a cramp on Riyadh’s efforts to become a regional power, Ibrahim Mohammad al-Dailami, the Houthi militia’s Iran-based envoy, has claimed.
Speaking to Iran’s PressTV, al-Dailami said that when Riyadh launched its military operation in Yemen in 2015, it was seeking to show itself as “a regional entity to counter other regional entities and become the main agent for the American project in the region.”
“However, [Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman’s] stumbling in Yemen resulted in a real delay for the Saudis to become a regional power and agent for the American-Zionist project in the area,” the Houthi official added. “Saudis wanted to achieve quick victory in a matter of weeks or one to two months. However, after five years, Saudi Arabia is drowning in Yemen,” he said.
Al-Dailami claimed that the Saudi-led coalition had failed to “divide” Yemen and to stir up “sedition among its people”. He also accused the UK, the US and Israel of being ‘complicit’ for the situation in Yemen due to their weapons as well as logistical and intelligence support to the coalition.
Yemen War Approaching Fifth Anniversary
Saudi Arabia and a coalition of mostly Gulf region allies including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait, as well as Jordan, Egypt and Sudan began a military operation in Yemen in March of 2015 at the request of Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, who had been ousted from power and fled to the kingdom earlier that year.
Despite nearly years of fighting, the coalition has not only failed to dislodge the Houthis from most of Yemen’s population centres, but faced militia drone and missile attacks against targets inside Saudi Arabia itself, with these strikes targeting everything from airports and military bases to Saudi cities. In September, the militia group attacked two major Saudi Aramco oil facilities, briefly suspending the production of up to half of the country’s total oil output. Riyadh and its US allies accused Iran of the acts of sabotage. Iran has denied the claims, while the Houthis claimed responsibility and accused those trying to blame others for the strikes of acting like “cowards”.
The war in Yemen has led to the deaths of up to 91,000 people, and has caused a massive humanitarian crisis which the UN has deemed the “worst in the world” today.

Yemeni Houthi fighters have fired a ballistic missile at a Saudi border guard base located in the southern city of Najran, a spokesman for the Yemeni armed forces affiliated with the group, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said on Friday.
According to the spokesman, the group targeted the 19th Brigade National Guard headquarters in Bir Askar, Najran with a Badr-1 missile.
Saree added that dozens of Saudi soldiers were killed and injured in the attack which came as “the legitimate and natural response to the crimes of the Saudi regime”.

“The police accused the father of supporting terrorism and held him for four days. He was released on bail, and a court date is pending.
The UK police have charged the father of a Briton, who volunteers with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Syria and fights against the Daesh terrorist group*, with terrorism offences in the first of such a case in the country, media reported on Friday.
According to The Guardian newspaper, the police detained 49-year-old Paul Erdal on 11 December in the town of Solihull, located in the central county of West Midlands. Erdal was questioned about his son, Dan Newey, who joined the YPG in the battle against Daesh in 2017.
Newey, however, was not charged when he returned to the United Kingdom from Syria in March 2018 but was investigated and placed on a watch list.
Unlike the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the YPG is not considered a terrorist organisation by the UK. Hundreds of volunteers from all over the world joined the Kurdish groups in Syria, including many UK nationals. To this date, at least seven Britons were killed while fighting for the YPG.”

“Three people were wounded on Christmas day in the French city of Besançon following a shootout between drug gang members involving what local police described as military-grade weapons.
The incident occurred in the district of Planoise, known to be a particularly vulnerable area to criminality, with such areas often referred to as no-go zones. The shooting began at around 7:30 pm and saw two hooded men open fire on a group of other young men with what police described as Kalashnikov rifles, broadcaster RTL reports.
According to police, two men, aged 30 and 31, were seriously wounded in the shooting and another boy, aged 14, was also injured in what investigators described as a settling of accounts between rival drug-dealing gangs. Following the initial shooting, members of the group being attacked are also said to have returned fire.
Both of the victims who received serious gunshot wounds were taken to a local hospital where they received emergency surgery and are expected to survive the attack.
A police source close to the investigation told French media that settling of scores attacks are becoming more and more frequent in Planoise and that a hand grenade was even found under the car of another gang member targetted by rival drug dealers.
Military-grade weaponry is also becoming more commonly found in the possession of drug gangs in France as well, with several police raids over the past few years finding weapons from automatic rifles all the way up to anti-tank missiles.
Earlier this yea rin April, police in the commune of Vaulx-en-Velin near Lyon discovered a rocket launcher in the boot of a car belonging to two criminals already known to police.
Both murder and attempted murder have seen a dramatic rise in the last decade in France, with the total numbers up 79 per cent over the period.
“Violence is [spreading]. Law enforcement is no longer scary. Today, for nothing, for a look, it turns to fists. Pulling out a gun has become commonplace,” Frédéric Lagache of the police union Alliance Police Nationale said.”

“A court in Bosnia on Friday sentenced a Bosnian man to four years in prison for fighting with the Islamic State group in Syria.
The Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina said that Ibro Cufurovic was guilty of organizing a terrorist group.
The 24-year-old was deported to Bosnia in April after he was captured in Syria. He left Bosnia in 2014, going first to Turkey and then crossing into Syria with an aim to join the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, said the court.
The Klix news portal in Bosnia reported that Cufurovic’s family also were deported from Syria earlier this month.
Bosnian officials in the past have said that 260 Bosnian citizens remain in the camps in Syria, including approximately 100 men and 160 women and children,
In 2014, Bosnia became the first country in Europe to introduce prison terms for its citizens who fought abroad.”

“A Turkish court on Friday convicted six journalists and one other employee of an independent newspaper of aiding the network of a U.S.-based cleric who is accused of masterminding the failed coup in 2016, the state-run news agency reported.
The seven were accused of supporting the coup through their work for the newspaper Sozcu, which has been extremely critical of the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They all reject the accusations and are expected to appeal the verdicts.
The case has intensified concerns over a crackdown under Erdogan on news coverage critical of his administration.
Columnists Emin Colasan and Necati Dogru were sentenced to three years and six months in prison, Anadolu Agency reported. The paper’s chief editor Metin Yilmaz and its online edition’s managing editor, Mustafa Cetin, received just over three years in prison, while online news editor Yucel Ari, financial manager Yonca Yucelan and journalist Gokmen Ulu were sentenced to two-year prison terms.
The court in Istanbul acquitted one journalist, Mediha Olgun, of the charges.
A case against the paper’s owner, Burak Akbay, who is living abroad and being tried in absentia, is to continue separately, Anadolu reported.
Turkey accuses Gulen of orchestrating the coup and has branded his network a terror organization. Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the United States, denies any involvement in the coup attempt.
Turkey is ranked the highest jailer of journalists in the world, after China, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The suspects arrested late Thursday belong to the al-Qaida branch active in the region and known as Al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent, he said, adding that the men ran a media cell for the terror network and coordinated its militant operations in the region. One of the arrested men was an expert in forged documents, while another specialized in digital media and publications, the official also said.
Imran said electronic equipment, weapons and explosive vests were seized in the raid. He said the suspects, who were initially based in the southern port city of Karachi but recently moved to Gujranwala, were also involved in raising funds for al-Qaida.
Al-Qaida founder Osama Bin Laden was killed in a U.S. Navy SEALs operation in May 2011 in his hiding place in the garrison city of Abbottabad, not far from the capital of Islamabad.”

However, that has not stopped Venezuelan bolivares from becoming a commodity elsewhere.
Across the border in Colombia, Hector Cordero uses the currency to make wallets and purses, which he sells to tourists in Colombia.

As the impeachment of Pres. Donald Trump heads into its twenty-third year (at least that’s how it’s beginning to feel), the Left once again finds itself embracing the document liberals love most to hate. And they’re doing it in the most obnoxious ways possible.
On Thursday, Joe Scarborough, star of MSNBC’s show “Morning Joe,” urged Trump to “do something that he’s never done before and read the Constitution of the United States.” Scarborough elaborated, explaining that if he did, the president “might actually understand how the Speaker of the House has that power,” referring to impeachment.
That’s true, but the put-down comes at a time when said speaker is trying to control the tone and tenor of the as-yet-to-be-scheduled impeachment trial, which is a gross violation of Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution That article specifies that “the Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments.” Pelosi’s work on the impeachment — and input into it — ended with the House vote.
The Democrats’ dislike for the Constitution (aka, document written by a bunch of dead white men) was on vivid display during the Obama years. Barack Obama himself, a self-professed “constitutional scholar,” boasted in 2018 that he would won a third term in office had it not been for that pesky piece of paper.

“Luxembourg’s progressive cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich echoed a Christmas appeal for migrants by Pope Francis, decrying the exploitation of migrants in Greece and the shameful inaction of Europeans to help.
Speaking at the cathedral in Luxembourg City, Cardinal Hollerich chastised his fellow Europeans for not coming to the aid of those living in refugee camps on the Greek island of Lesbos, which he personally visited last May at the pope’s behest.
“There are definitely children there that will vanish and be forced into child prostitution,” said the Jesuit cardinal, who is the president of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE). “There are children there who will be taught to steal. Others will be raped and assaulted. This is gruesome.”
“This is not happening far from Luxembourg in some place where we cannot help,” he continued. “This is happening in Greece — in Europe and in the European Union. We must be fiercely ashamed that we have not done anything to help.”
Earlier this week, the cardinal expressed his opinion that the political inaction on the Mediterranean refugee crisis is due to “fear of right-wing parties.”
“I find it outrageous that we’re letting people drown in the Mediterranean; that our hearts have become so hard; that politics no longer dares to act for fear of right-wing parties,” Hollerich told RTL Radio.
In his Christmas diatribe on behalf of migrants, the cardinal brought in another topic dear to the pontiff’s heart — climate change — suggesting that many of those migrating are being forced out of their countries by global warming.
The first to suffer the effects of climate change are the less fortunate people in third-world countries, the cardinal said, namely, those fleeing for Europe.
In the age of global warming, Hollerich declared, there is a new form of migrants who are no longer “economic refugees” but “climate refugees,” escaping the effects of extreme weather.
A vocal ecological activist, the cardinal said this past fall that climate change was the most important issue faced by the Vatican synod on the Amazon, urging that its final document “be very strong” on ecological issues.
“If our planet is destroyed, we can shout as much as we want about married priests or women priests, but there will be no priests needed anymore,” Hollerich said in an interview with the Jesuit-run America magazine.
“So, it’s the most important problem and it’s a problem with the greatest urgency,” the cardinal said.
Hollerich stressed the need for “ecological conversion” on the part of everyone, declaring that he buys fair-trade coffee instead of Nespresso, no longer uses plastic bottles, and has swapped out his diesel car for a hybrid one.
“We bishops have to change our lifestyle, and if we older people succeed in doing it, then the younger ones can do it too,” he said. “But if I cannot change my own lifestyle, how can I say to young people to do so?”
In late 2018, Hollerich signed an appeal calling on government leaders to take immediate action to overcome the “devastating effects of the climate crisis.”
The appeal called for keeping global warming below 1.5º C as well as a shift toward sustainable lifestyles, respect for indigenous communities, and the implementation of a “financial paradigm shift” in line with global climate accords.
This paradigm shift entails “putting an end to the fossil fuel era and transitioning to renewable energy” as well as rethinking the agriculture sector to ensure it provides healthy and accessible food for everyone, with a special emphasis on promoting agroecology, it said.
Following last May’s European elections, Hollerich said he was delighted with the successes of green parties while lamenting the rise of populist-nationalist groups.
“It is positive that in several places numerous young people voted for ecological parties, which means that the themes of environment and creation can become important in the future,” Hollerich said, noting that “as a Church” the victory of the green parties “makes us happy.”
Populist victories, on the other hand, would have been even “worse” if not for the pope’s constant call for a more welcoming attitude toward migrants, Hollerich said at the time.
In his own Christmas blessing this week, Pope Francis underscored the plight of migrants, addressing the topic of immigration a remarkable three times in an 865-word message.
“May the newborn Lord bring light to the people of Africa, where persistent social and political situations often force individuals to migrate, depriving them of a home and family,” the pontiff said to the estimated 55,000 pilgrims and tourists gathered in Saint Peter’s Square.
Modern migration is the product of injustice, the pope stated, insisting that migrants often find their efforts impeded by “walls of indifference.”
May the Son of God protect and sustain all those who, due to injustices “are forced to emigrate in the hope of a secure life,” the pontiff said in his Urbi et Orbi blessing.”

The latest reports put the death total at well over a thousand, with ten times as many wounded. And the list of victims continues to grow apace, with scores arrested every day. Male boss forced Muslim prison guard to remove her hijab: suit
A female corrections officer says she was forced to defy her Muslim beliefs when a lone male supervisor demanded she remove her hijab, a new<b $8 million lawsuit charges.
Maureen Billings, a corrections officer at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County, claims her bosses retaliated against her after the 2017 incident by taking her off payroll for seven months, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in White Plains.
Billings claims her captain, Paul Artuz, made her take off her hijab during a meeting at the women’s prison to demonstrate that it could be quickly removed without it choking her, the suit reads.
The woman said she would be OK with taking off the hijab in front of Artuz as long as a fellow female officer was in the room.
The Islamic faith prohibits women from disrobing in front of men
who are not of their immediate family, Billings alleges.
But Artuz refused to bring in a female officer, despite the fact that at least two other female captains were on duty that day, the papers charge.
Following the meeting, Billings injured her knee in what was deemed a stress injury.
But Billings said that her bosses retaliated against her over the hijab issue in May 2017 by taking her off the payroll and not allowing her to return to duty for seven months, despite the fact that she had a doctor’s note stating that she was cleared to work.
She was eventually allowed to return to work in December 2017, but was not provided with a reason for why she was kept out of work for seven months.
The woman is demanding at least $8 million in damages, her suit states.
The New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision declined to comment on the suit.
“This is a case that demands immediate attention,” said Frederick Brewington, an attorney for Billings. “Religious accommodations of this sort cause no problems for an employer.”

Congolese Woman Crosses the US Border Suffering from Abdominal Pain and Vomiting – Dies at Texas Hospital
A 41-year-old Congolese woman died on Christmas Day at a Texas hospital after she arrived at the Laredo port of entry.
The woman said she was vomiting and was taken to a local hospital.
NBC says the woman died from kidney failure.

Libya’s Political Instability Makes Room for ISIS to Regroup

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the way on December 26 for direct military intervention in Libya: he announced a parliamentary vote in early January on sending troops to support the UN-backed Tripoli government against General Khalifa Haftar. Instructors, equipment and Turkish special forces are already operating in Libya alongside pro-government militias. Erdogan said that Turkey would also be willing to send aerial and naval assistance if circumstances require it.
Sending Turkish troops will complicate the situation in an already fragile country, torn by internal dissent since the ouster and killing of the dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
The map of foreign intervention in Libya is important: In the east of the country, forces from Saudi Arabia and Egypt support Gen. Haftar, the separatist who heads the Libyan National Army — not the country’s national army. Arrayed against them are Turkey and Qatar, supporting the recognized government headed by Fayez al-Sarraj, but his government is not supported by the legislature. Then there is Russia. It has dispatched militia forces known as the Wagner Group, which have already carried out operations in Syria, are also operating in several African countries — supporting and assisting Haftar’s forces. France has joined the group of countries that support the rebel general, while Italy backs Sarraj’s recognized government.

Is China Engaging in Debt Trap Diplomacy?
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The pending Chinese acquisition of a stake in Tajikistan’s aluminum smelter, coupled with earlier tax concessions to Chinese companies that would substantially reduce the trickle down effect of investments for the troubled Tajik economy, suggest that China has yet to fully take into account frequent criticism of its commercial approach to Belt and Road-related projects.
Desperate for cash, Tajikistan is about to sell yet another vital asset to China at a time when countries like Sri Lanka and the Maldives are demanding renegotiation of debt settlements that either forced them to surrender control of critical infrastructure or left them with unsustainable repayments.
The Washington-based Center for Global Development warned last year that “23 of 68 countries benefiting from Belt and Road (BRI) investments were significantly or highly vulnerable to debt distress.”
The center said eight countries — Tajikistan, the Maldives, Pakistan, Djibouti, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, and Montenegro — are particularly at risk.
“There is…concern that debt problems will create an unfavorable degree of dependency on China as a creditor. Increasing debt, and China’s role in managing bilateral debt problems, has already exacerbated internal and bilateral tensions in some BRI countries,” the report said.

ROME — Pope Francis dreams of being the pontiff who will establish diplomatic relations with Beijing, and to achieve this goal he is willing to make “concessions,” asserts Vatican analyst Alban Mikozy.
“Pope Francis is a prudent man,” Mikozy told French television. “He pursues a dream: to be the sovereign pontiff who will restore relations between China and the Vatican.”
“In order to do this, he is ready to make a few concessions: say nothing about Hong Kong, do not get too excited when the Chinese leader talks about rewriting the Bible,” he added, in reference to announcements that the Chinese Communist Party intends to retranslate the Bible and other sacred texts to make them conform to socialist ideology.
Observers were quick to notice the pope’s omission of Hong Kong in his long list of troubled situations around the world in his traditional Christmas “Urbi et Orbi” message Wednesday.
Among the many held up for their suffering, the pope mentioned “the Middle East,” the “beloved Syrian people,” “the Lebanese people,” “Iraq,” “Yemen,” “the whole American continent,” “the beloved Venezuelan people,” “beloved Ukraine,” “the people of Africa,” “the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” “Burkina Faso,” “Mali,” “Niger,” “Nigeria,” along with three separate shout-outs to migrants.

Immigration judges frustrated with the Trump administration’s tightening of control over the Department of Justice based immigration court system are resigning from the bench in higher than normal numbers, many out of frustration, according to a report by CNN. The crack down began under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and has continued under Attorney General William Barr.

Montenegro’s ‘religious freedom’ law is a vile, lawless travesty
Adopting a ‘religious freedom’ law that opens the door to persecuting a particular faith would normally be seen as a horrifying breach of human rights, but when done to Orthodox Serbs in Montenegro, the West doesn’t seem to mind.
Montenegro’s ruling regime rammed the controversial law through the parliament in the dead of night between Thursday and Friday. Every single amendment of the opposition Democratic Front (DF) – proposed to alleviate concerns that the bill was deliberately targeting the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) – was rejected. When some DF members disrupted the session in protest, all of them were arrested and jailed.

Montenegro: Thousands of believers protest new law on religion
Thousands gathered outside Saint Basil’s of Ostrog cathedral in the Montenegrin city of Niksic on Saturday to protest a proposed law which would transfer all property of religious institutions to the state.
Footage shows believers and members of the Serbien Orthodox Church gathered outside and inside the cathedral.
Jovan Bulatovic, a believer hailing from Podgorica said, “The law the government wants to pass is ill-favoured. This law wants to take over the 1,000 years old history and 800-year-old churches and religion. They want to privatise religion just like they privatised everything in Montenegro. The people won’t let them do that. We will protect our faith, our church, our tradition.”
Another believer, Vesna Bratic shared that she joined the gathering “to support the Serbian Orthodox Church against their long lasting fight against this unconstitutional and ungodly law.”
The law proposed by the Montenegrin government demands a registry of all religious objects and sites, and claims that ownership can only be retained if it is proven by clear evidence, prompting fears in the Serbian Orthodox community of losing property over their Church.
