Reader’s Links for December 16, 2019

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. WATCH: Refugee Camp ISIS Child Tells UK Reporter ‘We Will Slaughter You’ (breitbart, Dec 15, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/12/15/cubs-of-the-caliphate-isis-boy-tells-reporter-we-will-slaughter-you/

“Children of Islamic State fighters and their brides in Syrian holding camps may represent a grave threat to the West, with one telling a British reporter: “We will slaughter you.”

“In Arabic, he first quoted a verse from the Koran: ‘God says, “Turn to Allah with sincere repentance in the hope that your Lord will remove you from your ills”,’” recalled Sky News correspondent Mark Stone of an encounter with a jihadist “cub” in the Al Hol camp in Syria, which holds some 70,000 Islamic State women and children, 10,000 of whom are foreigners.

“He was asking us to repent our sins,” Stone continued.

“And then, calmly, he said: ‘We’re going to kill you by slaughtering you. We will slaughter you.’”

Many Western countries are currently seeking to repatriate children born in the shattered caliphate to women who hold (or held) citizenship Western countries.

“[T]he black-clad women of the Islamic State”, Stone reported, are the “only guides” for these children, and “claim to represent the purest form of Islam.”

Some who spoke to Stone defended the caliphate’s atrocities, such as beheading prisoners and burning people alive, on grounds that “It’s says it in the Koran” [sic].

As the Islamic State’s last territorial strongholds were being evacuated, it was reported that some evacuated jihadi brides made openly statements, such as “My son will grow up to be a jihadist” and “I hope the Islamic caliphate will return and spread across all corners of the globe,” among other ominous declarations.

The position of left-liberals on these women is fairly indulgent. All contend that they cannot be stripped off their citizenship, despite having defected to a hostile power overseas, unless they are dual nationals with citizenship or eligibility for citizenship elsewhere — and some argue they should not be stripped of their citizenship at all.

Despite the clear risks represented by their children, there appears to be a broad consensus — among the media-political class if not the public — that their children definitely should be repatriated, as in the infamous case British-born jihadi bride Shamima Begum.

Left-liberals took a curious stance with respect to Begum, arguing that although both her parents were Bangladeshi migrants, she should not have her British citizenship stripped an be expected to go to Bangladesh, as she was born in Britain and therefore “our problem”.

But with respect to her child, they took the opposite view that he should be considered Britain’s responsibility because his mother was British-born — despite being born in Syria.”

    • Humanophobia:

How can you tell this is just not the free-speech of our childhood crippled generic prejudice and resentments?

      Humanophobia:
      1. Supplanting all other human beings as superior. ‘Best of Mankind.’
      2. Blaming outside-the-cult human beings for all their woes.

  2. UK: NHS Doctor Manish Shah Guilty of Assaulting ‘Dozens of Female Patients’ (breitbart, Dec 15, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/12/15/uk-nhs-doctor-manish-shah-guilty-of-assaulting-dozens-female-patients/

“National Health Service (NHS) doctor Manish Shah has been found guilty of sexually assaulting “dozens” of female patients while practising in London.

50-year-old Shah, of Brunel Close, Romford, was convicted of nine counts of sexual assault and 16 counts of sexual assault by penetration.

He had previously been convicted of multiple offences of sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by touching against 17 other women in a December 2018 trial, details of which were subject to reporting restrictions until now.

All told, according to a Metropolitan Police statement, Shah was convicted for offences perpetrated against “a total of more than 20 female victims, aged in their 20s and 30s” over the two trials, having duped them into “regular breast and vaginal examinations” for which there was “no clinical need” at the Mawney Medical Centre in east London.

“Shah was a long-serving doctor who was well-known in the community, and trusted and liked by his patients, many who had him as their GP for many years,” commented Acting Detective Superintendent Richard McDonagh for the Central Specialist Crime team at the Metropolitan Police.

“They were unaware that Shah was carrying out unnecessary, invasive examinations on female patients for his own sexual gratification, after giving his victims misleading clinical advice. These offences are particularly grave due to Shah’s abuse of his position, and of the trust placed in him as a family doctor.

“Today’s conviction is the culmination of a huge amount of work on what was a complex, sensitive investigation which was supported by NHS England. I would like to acknowledge the women who were victims of Shah, and who supported the prosecution and gave evidence at Shah’s trials. Without their evidence, Shah may not have been brought to justice, but the weight of evidence against him at both trials was overwhelming.””

  4. THE BBC CAN ONLY FIND CHRISTMAS TREES IN ‘PALESTINE’
The item is intended to raise the Christmas spirit and brings images of impressive Christmas trees across the world. So far, so good. Until you look at the page. I have a radar for anti-Israel activism and propaganda. To analyse articles and work out which ones are subtly twisted by a journalist who wants to weave their personal dislike of the Jewish state into the words on the page. On many occasions that bias is subtle and can even be expertly hidden. Rarely are these people caught with their trousers so firmly down around their ankles as with this particular BBC page. Outside of the world of a petty anti-Israel activist deliberately writing a piece of Palestinian propaganda fit for a Hamas PR unit – this BBC article makes absolutely no sense. How many impressive Christmas trees are there in the world? The BBC webpage published 10 days ago managed to find seven. Just seven. The page hasn’t been updated since and there are still seven trees. The BBC found impressive trees in Vilnius, New York, Gaza, Prague, California, Ramallah, and Bethlehem. Three trees in PA/Hamas areas. Three. This is not education – this is blatant propaganda. Even the Arab outlet ‘Gulf News’ wouldn’t publish such a piece. They found other images from Dortmund, Strasbourg and the Vatican – cities with Christmas trees that for whatever reason – the BBC just couldn’t find. David Collier

  5. CAIR CALLS ON AMAZON & GOOGLE TO REMOVE ALL “WHITE SUPREMACIST, PRO-CONFEDERATE” MATERIALS
Already CAIR has positioned itself as judge, and few in the establishment media pay attention to its links to Hamas. Few note that its definition of what is “white supremacist” is extremely broad. The logic of CAIR’s demand is outrageous. A first priority should be that Islamic supremacist preaching and literature be removed from all mosques, Islamic centers, and madrassas; after that, every Islamic group associated with Hamas and other jihad terror organizations should be banned, including CAIR. 6. NATO AT 70: DEMENTED & INCONTINENT
NATO does not strengthen the defensive capabilities of its members against real threats such as illegal immigration, pandemic diseases, transnational crime, drugs and human trafficking and the destabilization and smashing of state structures around the world. On the contrary it has become a major factor in destroying resistance to those pathologies. In reality, of course, NATO does not uphold and protect world peace at all: It is in the business of relentlessly eroding global security and setting the great nations of the Northern Hemisphere on a hell-for-leather collision course to full-scale, no-holds-barred thermonuclear war. What else can come from regular major military exercises recently called Anaconda that are openly proclaimed to encircle, bully, intimidate and ultimately crush Russia? (Never a Wise Plan!) The clear truth is that NATO, its leaders and its planners have become virulent and they have become mad. The pathological behaviors and dementia of the Alliance and its leaders are consistent and clear. To flee the Alliance is the best hope to survive the horrors that its leaders and policymakers seem determined to bring upon themselves and the rest of the human race. Martin Sieff

It’s the eighth US Navy vessel to arrive in the region this year. Washington insists that its naval missions in the Black Sea are carried out in line with the international law on a rotational basis. It says their aim is to support freedom of navigation and reassure NATO allies in view of the so-called “Russian threat.” Moscow believes the American military has nothing to do in the region, with the presence of the US Navy only adding to tensions and increasing the risk of incidents, which in the worst-case scenario can provoke a military conflict in Europe.

  9. DOCUMENTARY: HONG KONG – FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
    video – 133 minutes
In September 2019, Freedomain Host Stefan Molyneux and “Hoaxed” Director Jon du Toit traveled to Hong Kong to explore the anti-Communist movement. The result is a powerful new documentary entitled “Hong Kong: Fight for Freedom!” From facing down tear gas during a protest march, to interviewing the author of the Hong Kong constitution, this film documents in vivid detail the incredible courage and moral depth of the resistance to the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong. As goes Hong Kong, so goes the West – and the world.

  10. AUSTRALIA: BREXIT’S DONE – NOW FOR OUR CLEXIT
Thanks to Boris Johnson, Brexit will now occur. And thanks to Donald Trump, the United States will exit the destructive Paris Climate agreement. And the United Nations alarmists have made little progress at the big climate-fest in Madrid. It’s now time for Clexit; Climate Exit — the great climate escape from all UN/IPCC alarmism and entanglements. Australia should join this rush for the exits. Like Brexit, Clexit is now inevitable. The burden of climate alarm costs and energy disruption ensure that western democracies will dump it. The sooner it is scrapped, the lower the cost to us as individuals, to jobs and our economy as a whole. Viv Forbes

AUSTRALIA: LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE NATION STATE
Things have slipped in the UK as they have here. There shouldn’t have been a constituency for what Corbyn was offering, but he’s won over 200 seats, so there was. That’s because, as in Australia, the talkers elite infects, and frequently runs, all of our institutions and large businesses. They are no one’s friend because they are only absorbed in themselves. Election results like this UK one give us all, not just the British, an opportunity to re-engineer society and put it back on a firm basis. It should not be squandered. Graham Young

Hong Kong authorities rallied supporters to counter ongoing pro-democracy demonstrations on Sunday. A similar demonstration took place earlier in the month.

    • China’s Xi vows support for Hong Kong leader during ‘most difficult’ time

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Chinese President Xi Jinping offered his support for Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Monday, praising her courage in governing the Chinese-ruled financial hub in these “most difficult” times after months of often violent anti-government protests.

His comments came after Hong Kong police fired tear gas in late night street clashes with anti-government protesters as the former British colony’s worst political crisis in decades shows no sign of resolution.
      Report Ad

“The situation in Hong Kong in 2019 was the most complex and difficult since its return to the motherland,” Xi told local media in brief comments before a closed-door meeting with Lam in Beijing.

“The central government fully recognizes the courage and assumption of responsibility you have displayed in these exceptional times in Hong Kong.”

Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with the promise of wide-ranging autonomy under a “one country, two systems” formula, including a free press and independent judiciary, which the protesters say is being eroded by Communist Party rulers in Beijing. China denies the charge.

Hong Kong media have speculated that Lam’s talks with Xi could yield fresh directives on the crisis, including a possible cabinet reshuffle. Xi did not go into specifics, but reiterated his support for Lam despite some previous media reports suggesting she might be replaced.

“A man from Kosovo has been charged in Germany with supporting a terrorist organization on allegations he funneled money to the Islamic State in Syria and spread propaganda for the extremist group, federal prosecutors said Monday.

The suspect, identified only as Hasan B. in line with German privacy regulations, was charged Dec. 4 in Hamburg, prosecutors said.

    B. is accused of facilitating the transfer of funds to an Islamic State fighter in Syria 11 times between 2016 and 2017 and contributing some of his own money as well. He’s additionally accused of transferring money to a Macedonian man in 2015 to help him travel to Syria to fight for the Islamic State group.

In 2015, B. is accused of starting a Facebook account for an Islamic State member and helped him use the account to spread Islamic State propaganda.

    B. was arrested in June and has been in custody since.”

Democrats’ Election Win in Virginia Yields Gun Registration Proposal
    By Matthew Vadum

Virginia Democrats are proposing a mandatory state gun registration measure after widespread public outrage forced them to back off a more aggressive plan to confiscate so-called assault weapons, a designation that gun experts have long rejected as arbitrary.

Gun-control advocates call modern sporting rifles—such as the popular AR-15—assault weapons, likening them to weapons of war.

But Gov. Ralph Northam’s plan still calls for a ban on assault weapons, albeit with a grandfather clause allowing those who already own such weapons to keep them, Northam spokeswoman Alena Yarmosky said in a statement, The Daily Wire reported on Dec. 12.

The grandfather clause will apply only if the owners register their weapons with the government “before the end of a designated grace period,” Yarmosky said.

Northam issued what Cam Edwards of the pro-Second Amendment website Bearing Arms characterized as a “veiled threat” to use force against political subdivisions of the state that refuse to comply with new laws.

    • The Top 10 Gun Laws Americans Really Need
These are the changes Republicans should make to federal gun laws, once they again hold the White House and both houses of Congress.
      Mark Overstreet
      By Mark Overstreet
      September 10, 2019

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump said previous Republicans had made big promises to get votes and failed to deliver, but that he would be different. Appealing to America’s 100 million gun owners, he argued against two elements of Democrats’ civilian disarmament agenda: “universal” background checks, which Democrats hope to transform into a federal gun registry that can be used to enforce gun confiscation, and a ban on semi-automatic rifles Democrats call “assault weapons.”

However, several weeks ago Trump and several Republicans in Congress said they were considering giving in to Democrats on both counts.

For various reasons, perhaps including his waffling on guns, it is not certain that Trump will be reelected in 2020. But if he stops listening to members of his family who support gun control, if the Republican Senate quashes Democrats’ gun schemes, if Trump is reelected, if the Republicans hold the Senate, and if they re-take the House of Representatives—a lot of ifs—he and the Republicans could change federal gun laws for the better.

The Trump family was comfortable within the NYC elite (that includes Jared’s late father). Ivanka was besties with glittering left-wing socialites/activists. Including the worst MB-sycophants, like Dina Powell and nouveau-rich, grifter trash like Chelsea Clinton.

DJT was a popular figure everywhere – till he turned his powerful personality to the next stage of his life. ‘Economic security is national security’ – everything flows from there. Exactly right, his forte.

He’s always used polarizing tactics to his advantage. A sharp dealer, he’s faced down NYC power-brokers who hold personal grudges against him. Nadler, for example, lost a bundle to him on a property deal. Right now he’s venting blind rage from way-back-when.

PTrump is pragmatic as a politician: he cuts his jib to the weather, then sells it as winning! to an adoring base. Smoke and mirrors China deal, fuzzy Wall updates, lack of candor on the filthy Turk’s depredations of northern Syria.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a great fan. He’s doing what he feels he must to win 2020.

I just think we need to keep him anchored to what’s critical to us, that might not be bedrock to him. So he won’t be able to temporize. Let him engage in deal-making elsewhere.

Certainly not on 2A, for example. Red-flags are a RED-FLAG.

        • I know what you mean.

The list is a dream list that a 20 years ago I would have thought impossible, since then I have seen a very dramatic turn around on the 2A and other rights that are under attack. I don’t think Trump is passionate about most of what we want but to achieve his goal of economic security for the nation he is going to have to push for most of what we want.

His greatest achievement is to fill the empty court seats with constructionist Judges. They won’t always rule the way we want but will do more to reverse our slide into Marxism then any other action.

Another thing he is doing right is establishing a Space Force, Russia and China have some form of a space force and are busy building anti satellite weapons while we concentrate on non defense satellites. Although there are some semi believable reports that we have deployed some weapons that are (literally) straight out of Science Fiction stories. Pay attention to this area, we are setting at the bottom of a well and the people wo control the top of the well control the earth. By well I mean gravity well, if we get into a rock throwing contest the top of the well has all of the advantages. Plus the way things are going there is great economic gains to be made by shifting our mineral production (or at least part of it) to resources in space, another reason to have a Space Force and control the top of the well.

This little piggy went to court: German piglets ‘sue over castration’

Berlin (AFP) – Little piggies go to market, but in Germany they also go to court.

In a legal first, animal rights activists have asked Germany’s top court to ban the practice of castrating young male pigs without anaesthetic — with the piglets themselves listed as the plaintiffs.

The painful procedure has become increasingly controversial in Europe and has been banned in Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.

Farmers argue that the castration of piglets a few days after birth is necessary to prevent “boar taint”, the occasional occurrence of a foul smell when cooking pork from male pigs past puberty.

The German parliament outlawed castration without pain relief in 2013 but it offered farmers a five-year transition period to help them adapt to the change — a timeline that was extended last year until 2021.

Outraged by the inaction, the PETA campaign group filed a lawsuit with Germany’s Constitutional Court in November on behalf of the baby pigs.

The group wants judges to recognise that pigs have rights similar to human rights and that these are being violated by the “cruel act” of castration without pain relief.

  16. UK Equality Act 2010 (c. 15)
    Part 5 — Work
    Chapter 1 — Employment, etc.
60 Enquiries about disability and health
“(1) A person (A) to whom an application for work is made must not ask about the
    health of the applicant (B)—
    (a) before offering work to B, or
    (b) where A is not in a position to offer work to B, before including B in a
pool of applicants from whom A intends (when in a position to do so)
to select a person to whom to offer work.”

Now, in a Communist Empire, everyone works.

So how easy it is then, to ruin private enterprise with the above law?

For the health of your new employee is paramount in considering risk and advantages. Planning how many times off sick is a reasonable question for both parties to negotiate rationally if the employee is offering their services honestly and not deceptively.

    How to break a nation…

    • Now this Act is a magic wand decided by politicians, and so, I propose a clause:
“(c) We, the Most Magnanimous and Honourable government promise to pledge to reimburse every employee for their losses and future losses by turning a blind eye to the work-capacity of our citizen (B).”

Simple. Holding people accountable who spend other people’s money.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Protests over a new Indian citizenship law based on religion spread to student campuses on Monday as critics said the Hindu nationalist government was pushing a partisan agenda in conflict with the country’s founding as a secular republic.

Students pelted stones at police who locked up the gates of a college in the northern city of Lucknow to prevent them from taking to the streets. About two dozen students at another college in the city sneaked out to protest.

  18. NYT Columnist: American ‘Snakes and Vermin’ Support Donald Trump’s Immigration Policy (breitbart, Dec 16, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/immigration/2019/12/16/nyt-columnist-american-snakes-and-vermin-support-donald-trumps-immigration-policy/

“Americans who oppose large-scale immigration are “snakes and vermin,” says one of the most moderate columnists at the New York Times.

The glib dismissal of ordinary Americans came from columnist Tom Edsall who has been warning progressives since 2016 they should listen to the concerns of ordinary Americans. But Edsall has apparently cracked under the stress of defending his fellow Americans from his radically “woke” elite peers, and he claimed on December 11:

[Donald] Trump’s genius in 2016 lay in his willingness — indeed, his eagerness — to openly and aggressively unleash the forces of racial and ethnic hostility that Republican elites had quietly capitalized upon for decades. Trump will be a formidable candidate next year because he is prepared to look under the rocks of the American belief system and see the snakes and vermin that have camped there in the dark.

Edsall’s crack-up is understandable: He shares the belief mass migration has little impact on the distribution of wealth, opportunities, or economic security in the United States. That view is commonplace among socially isolated journalists and academics, so Edsall ends up quoting academics who wrote:

Given the modest economic impacts of immigration estimated in most studies, the depth of anti-immigrant sentiment is puzzling.

The impact of mass migration is primarily psychological, says another academic cited by Edsall:

Driving the opposition to immigration, [U.K. professor Eric] Kaufmann writes, are voters “whose psychological makeup inclines them to see difference as disorder and change as loss.”

This is not “about competition for jobs or services,” according to Kaufmann, “but instead mainly about majority-ethnic and what I term ‘ethno-traditional’ national identities. Conservative voters feel that these are being unsettled by the rapid ethnic shifts sweeping across western countries.”

In reality, ordinary Americans’ wealth, security, and status are deeply damaged by the federal government’s policy of inflating the labor supply with roughly 1 million legal immigrants per year, just as 4 million young Americans enter the labor force.

Immigration is shifting wealth and opportunities from the young to the old, from the heartland to the coasts, the ordinary to the clever, and from wage earners to stockholders. In turn, immigration has reshaped politics so much that Democrats’ 2020 candidates are now competing for Democrats’ voters by offering ever more help to foreign workers to take jobs, houses, and careers from Democrat-voting workers and graduates.

The economic shift is so vast that few will admit the scale. For example, the 2016 report on immigration by the National Academies of Science buried the admission that immigrants — both legal and illegal — reduce Americans’ wages by flooding the labor market. On clear on page 171 of its report, the panel said: “the current stock of immigrants lowered [Americans’] wages by 5.2 percent.”

But that NAS report declined to put a dollar figure on that 5.2 percent.

Well, wages comprise almost 60 percent of the nation’s $21,000 billion economy or roughly $12.5 trillion. In turn. 5.2 percent of $12.5 trillion is $650 billion. So the NAS’s 5.2 percent “immigration tax” caused by legal and illegal immigration adds up to $650 billion per year lost by employees because of competition from lower-cost immigrants.

The $650 billion lost to the immigration tax does not disappear — roughly 90 percent goes to employers and investors, according to the NAS report.

Business lobbyists routinely deny any connection between supply, demand, and wages in the labor market. But business executives regularly tell each other that surplus labor drives down wages and that labor shortages drive up wages.

“It is a myth that the labor market tightening over the past several years has failed to translate into stronger wage growth,” said a December 9 report by Goldman Sachs’ chief economist Jan Hatzius. He continued:

True, the year-on-year growth rate of average hourly earnings for all employees has edged down from 3.4% in February to 3.1% now. But our broader wage tracker has continued to trend higher and stands at 3.3% now, up from 3.0% in [the first quarter of 2019]. The acceleration has been even more pronounced among lower-paid workers … And our more comprehensive lower-income wage tracker has accelerated to 4.3% year-on-year.

Politicians and immigration lawyers sometimes admit the law of supply-and-demand shapes wages. For example, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a former immigration lawyer, pushed through a bill the House on December 12 which gives amnesty to illegal farm workers and an unlimited flow of cheap guest-workers to farmers. In a November hearing on the legislation, Lofgren described the corporatist bargain that created the amnesty-and-outsourcing bill:

The bill implements a wage freeze for the year 2020 [for 250,000 H-2A visa workers]. This is a very important matter for employers, [and] wages are expected to increase by another seven to eight percent next year. Under this bill, those wage increases won’t happen.

These are significant wage reforms — a recent report by the CATO institute found that the bill, if enacted, would have saved farmers $324 million in labor expenses in 2019 alone…”

    • “…Journalists understand the link between supply and demand. Still, they rarely describe the impact of immigration, even as President Donald Trump continues to nudge up wages by rejecting calls by business groups for more foreign workers. “A scarcity of workers has forced employers to be less picky, creating opportunities for traditionally disadvantaged groups such as ex-convicts,” said a December 12 report by Bloomberg Businessweek:

Fresh out of jail, Rita Parker just landed her highest-paying job ever. She started work on Dec. 9 at a Tulsa factory of a heating and air conditioning manufacturer, earning $14 an hour. The most she’d ever made before was $8.50, managing a convenience store. “My main worry getting out was that I wouldn’t get a good job,” says the 28-year-old, who served about nine months for drug possession. “A job will definitely help me stay sober. The shifts are so long, so I won’t have time to twiddle my thumbs.”

More cheap labor is good for CEOs because it cuts their payrolls. But investors get much more from immigration than reduced payrolls.

By the magic of the stock multiplier, investors gain roughly $20 in stock market wealth for every $1 cut in payroll. They also gain another $20 for every $1 dollar in profits gained from selling food, autos, services, and housing to the new immigrant American consumers. That 20:1 process sharply widens the growing wealth gaps between employees and investors, and between workers in the heartland and investors along the coasts.

This huge subsidy of cheap immigrant labor is repeatedly justified as a boost for the economy. Of course, immigration grows the economy because it grows the number of workers, consumers, and renters. But most of these economic gains go to employers and stock-owners — while the costs are imposed on wage earners and renters.

The federal government has chosen to add a huge population of more than 46 million legal and illegal immigrants people to the country, so the wealth shift is also huge.

In 1966, wage earners got 66 percent of the nation’s annual income, according to a report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Wage-earners’ share then gradually slid to share slid to 63 percent in 1990, when President George H. W. Bush and Congress sharply increased immigration. Their share continued falling, and after the 2008 crash, wage earners’ share crashed to 58 percent.

That overall decline means that wage earners lost one-eighth of their 1966 share of annual income to investors. But investors grew their share of the new wealth by one-third, or from 34 percent to 42 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Immigration cannot get all the credit for this vast income transfer. Immigration and guest-workers bring foreign workers to Americans’ jobs — while trade and technology help send jobs to lower-priced workers in China and India, allowing the stock market to gain from the coming of immigrants and the going of jobs.

Immigration also helps to change the economic demography of the United States.

The government flies new workers and consumers into the country every day. So coastal investors have little need to invest their job-creating money in the distant heartland towns where American families are sending their children to school, or where young American youths are looking for jobs. Instead, the investors can invest their funds in worksites sites that are just a short distance from their offices in New York or San Francisco, and from JFK and LAX airports.

The Brookings think-tank reported December 9 that “just five top innovation metro areas—Boston, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and San Diego—accounted for more than 90% of the nation’s innovation-sector growth during the years 2005 to 2017. ”

When the new migrants flow into the wealthier coastal cities, they push up rents and raise the real estate values of the apartments and houses owned by Americans in the coastal cities. This means that prosperous coastal Americans grow wealthier by getting up in the morning.

Migrants tend to grab new jobs in the coastal because they are far more mobile than heartland Americans who are rationally reluctant to leave their homes and their support networks of family and friends.

This same migrants-get-there-first process existed before the 1924 immigration reform which ended most immigration. After the shutdown, the new urban jobs were grabbed by Americans who migrated from Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi, Georgia, and other poor states down the “Hillbilly Highway” to Detroit, Baltimore, California, New York, and other cities. That wave of internal migration created new wage-cutting competition for the skilled Americans in the cities — but it aided the migrant Americans, and it also forced farmers to replace the departed workers with better machines, says a new article by four academics….”

    • “…So mass immigration is now skewing investment and economic growth towards coastal cities — and away from the stalled economies in the nation’s heartland:

The flood of cheap labor also reduces employers’ willingness to buy high-tech machinery and robots for their Americans employees, so decreasing their ability to grow their skills, wages, and families.

The House’s draft cheap-labor bill would accelerate this trend by replacing the current stock of illegal farmworkers with an endless supply of legal, low-wage H-2A visa workers. The two-sided deal will convert illegal aliens into Democratic voters and American farmworkers into unwanted and powerless labor. GOP Rep. Dan Newhouse — an orchard owner in Washington state — praised the legislation for capping the wages of farmworkers:

It will cap the ever-skyrocketing wage growth [for H-2A workers] in this country to 3.25 percent a year. Some states next year are facing a 9.5 percent increase. On top of that, it will allow full-time employers, like dairies, to be able to take advantage and utilize the H-2A program.

The inflow of visa-workers is also pushing Americans out of high-tech jobs and out of cutting-edge research careers — and so has helped India grow its economy and China to steal hugely valuable knowledge and secrets from Americans.

The flow of immigrants also creates new political divisions.
For example, the rising number of immigrants is encouraging politicians to focus their attention on the demands of immigrants and their many employers. This process is supercharged by identity politics, prompting many Democrats in the 2020 presidential election to promise free health care for illegal aliens, as well as a freeze on border arrests and deportations.

This year, a GOP Senator has asked India’s army of up to 750,000 workers in the United States to pressure Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin to allow the S.386 bill through the Senate. If approved, the bill will invite more Indian graduates to take low-wage jobs in the United States in the expectation of being rewards with citizenship. Obviously, law-abiding Americans cannot compete with the Indian H-1B workers and Mexican H-2A workers who rationally take low wages — and sensibly pay their employers — because they expect to get the government-provided bonus of citizenship.

The inflow of foreign workers into the Democratic coalition has sharply raised Democrats’ support for migration since 2012. Some surveys even show that progressive Democrats now believe it is more critical to help foreigners than to help Americans:

Edsall recognizes this shift. But he blames the shift on Trump’s win in 2016, not on President Barack Obama’s prior 2012 ‘DACA’ amnesty which was intended to win immigrant votes in the 2012 election:

The GOP elite pushed for the 2013 “Gang of Eight” amnesty after declaring that the party had no choice except to woo foreign migrants. Conveniently for the party’s donors, the 2013 amnesty would have reduced Americans’ wages for at least ten years while spiking the elite’s stock-market values, according to a 2013 report by the Congressional Budget Office.

In effect, since 2012, Democratic progressives and GOP-aligned business groups have increasingly divorced themselves from their former solidarity with their fellow Americans…”

    • “… The elites’ sense of solidarity is increasingly directed towards the poor and grateful immigrants who are glad to accept the new cheap-labor rules that steer more wealth to the allied progressive and business elites.

The immigrants also impose divisive diversity on coherent American communities, much to the advantage of the business establishment.

On December 9, for example, the citizens of Bismarck, North Dakota, turned out in force to debate whether the county should accept more refugees. The Washington Post reported:

Burleigh County Commission Chairman Brian Bitner told the Associated Press in advance of Monday’s vote that he believed most of his constituents were against admitting more refugees. The question had generated a more intense response than anything else he had seen during more than a decade on the commission, he said. “The overwhelming public opinion is so clear to me, that I think if you vote for it, you’re not going to be reelected if you choose to run again,” he said.

Pro-migration advocates said the refugees were needed to satisfy employers’ demands for a bigger supply of workers:

North Dakota’s Republican governor, Doug Burgum, signaled in November that the state would continue to accept refugees by sending a letter of consent to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In a statement issued Monday, he said he had “serious concerns that denying resettlement to a handful of well-vetted and often family-connected refugees would send a negative signal beyond our borders at a time when North Dakota is facing a severe workforce shortage and trying to attract capital and talent to our state.”

Locals worried about their children’s’ future:

“I’ve heard that most of the refugees coming in are women and children, and I understand that they need an education and to learn to speak English,” said a heavily bearded man who introduced himself as a sixth-generation inhabitant of North Dakota. “But we need to think about our kids here, too, before we start worrying about somebody else’s.”

The event could have been portrayed as a straightforward fight over the business demand for cheap labor, and the locals’ demands for a tight labor market that would help them get better pay for themselves and their children.

But settled refugees understandably spoke out in favor of more refugees, not with the local residents: The Post ended its article saying

“Since I arrived in this country, I felt like I finally found a home,” -A refugee from the Congo] told the commissioners. But after he saw what a divisive issue admitting refugees had become, he said, “I started asking myself many questions, trying to figure out where I actually belong.”

The Associated Press spotlighted one refugee who suggested opponents were motived by racism:

“Look at the room and tell every immigrant here that they are not welcomed,” said Geraldine Ambe, who moved to Bismarck from Cameroon and is now a U.S. citizen. She said her aunt and her husband and their four children “ran from Nigeria to seek protection. “Please look at her face and tell her ‘we can’t help you,’” Ambe said.

The tacit alliance between business groups and migrants against the locals was shown in the Washington Post, which reported that:

One woman, an immigrant, said the business she and her husband own badly needed more workers. “We are just talking about 25 people tonight,” she said. “We need 25,000.”…”

    • “…Under the watchful eyes of the national media, the country’s five commissioners voted to accept more refugees.

So far, business groups and Democrats have blocked most of the migration reforms pushed by President Donald Trump. That opposition helped get at least 400,000 migrant workers through the border in 2019, and it has stymied efforts to shrink the visa-worker programs which suppress graduates’ salaries. These wins for cheap labor helped suppress wages gains amid an almost-tight labor market throughout 2019.

The business groups are looking for ways to expand the flow of legal migrants into the United States. For example, elites are pushing for a farmworker amnesty, rewards for Indian college graduates, more poor migrants, more investor visas, and the easy movement of labor between the United States and India via the U.S.-India Outsourcing Economy.

Amid this pre-2021 gridlock, the relentless push for more migration is creating a new fight with the elite parents who hope their children can be kept in the top 20 percent or top 10 percent. As universities fill up with the children of smart immigrants and the well-connected “diversity” recruits, the American professional class may gradually recognize how their jobs are being outsourced and how they are being demoted by U.S. investors and their growing workforce of hardworking Indian and Chinese immigrants.

That fight is escalating now, as multiplying groups of college-graduate, Twitter-using activists opposing Mike Lee’s S.386 bill.

Meanwhile, Lee and his business allies use India’s workforce in the United States to pressure other Senators to endorse more outsourcing to Indian workers.

Unsurprisingly, few reporters in the establishment media have covered this important fight — likely because they share Edsall’s denial of economics in immigration”

  19. Turkish drone fuels tension over Cyprus gas claims (BBC, Dec 16, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50806877

“A Turkish military drone has arrived at a base in Turkish-backed northern Cyprus to help controversial gas exploration projects near the island.

A Turkish military official said the drone would escort its drilling ships. There are two – the Fatih and Yavuz – in the area, despite strong criticism from Cyprus and its EU partners.

Turkey alone recognises the self-styled Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The Republic of Cyprus, Greece and Israel are also exploring for gas.

In July a new “East Mediterranean Gas Forum” (EMGF) was launched by those three countries, plus Egypt, Jordan, Italy and the Palestinian Authority. However, Turkey was excluded.

The Eastern Mediterranean is reckoned to be rich in natural gas: the US Geological Survey estimates the deposits to run into trillions of cubic metres, worth hundreds of billions of dollars, besides millions of barrels of oil…”

  20. One Step From a Banana Republic
GOPUSA StaffAdriana Cohen Posted On 6:40 am December 14, 2019

Bad-faith Democrats pushing the impeachment hoax on the heels of one illegitimate investigation of the president after the next are destroying our republic as we know it.

What separates America from a banana republic is the peaceful transition of power — something Democrats have steadfastly refused to honor, as they’ve never accepted the results of the 2016 presidential election. Instead, they’ve been trying to derail President Donald Trump from doing the job he was elected to do, by subjecting his administration and the American people to a never-ending barrage of partisan-fueled investigations — built on sand.

First there was the Russian collusion hoax concocted by Hillary Clinton; the Democratic National Committee; and chief conspiracy theorist Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a documented liar who told us for the past three years that Trump colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election. This massive lie and disinformation campaign Democrats waged with a helping hand from complicit #FakeNewsMedia not only harmed our country; it sowed corrosive distrust in U.S. elections.

This was a win for communist nations and rogue regimes that seek to weaken America — the greatest democracy on Earth. They can now send a thank-you note to the left for having done their unscrupulous work for them.

Democrats’ deceptive actions have also caused damaging distrust in the Department of Justice. We’ve seen former President Barack Obama’s FBI, led by dirty FBI Director James Comey, use Russian-sourced opposition research paid for by the Clinton campaign and the DNC as a pretext to open counterintelligence investigations, spy on Clinton’s political rival’s associates and target Trump’s campaign.

    • There are several things that will determine if we are a Third World Country or not:

      1) What will the Democrats do during and after the next election? If they resort to rioting and physical attacks with massive vote fraud we are a Third World Country.

      2) What will the Democrats do when they lose the next election: If they start another impeachment movement we are a Third World Country. If they start an asymmetric civil war, we are a Third World Country.

The left around the world has been working to create the conditions where they can take over the world and create their one world socialist/communist country. They are willing to destroy everything and everyone who stands between them and their achieving their goal. They have managed to destroy Western Civilization and are working on destroying the rule of law in all Western Nations.

The rule of law is what guarentees our freedom and it is guaranteed by the willingness of the people to fight to preserve the rule of law. Without the rule of law and equal enforcement of the law there is no freedom. We see that almost daily as the left selectively enforces the laws to protect the people they think are useful to their cause and to punish and destroy all who oppose their quest to become our masters.

Freedom is never more then one generation from extinction and often much less, In WWII our Fathers and Grandfathers stepped up and accepted the challenge of saving freedom in the world. In the Cold War we stepped up and fought in small and large dirty wars to prevent communism from taking over the world. The current generation is now called upon to fight to preserve freedom in the world, they are fighting against greater odds then we have faced in many a generation. The globalists have infiltrated our governments and are controlling way too many of them. But there is hope, Trump was elected in the US, Johnson was elected Britain and AFD is gaining power in Germany. All of these are either fighting for the survival of our nations or trying to gain enough power to fight effectively. The People of Hong Kong are fighting for their freedom as are the people of Peru and Chili. We are all fighting against long odds but we have always faced long odds when we fight for freedom.

We fight for the future generations if we win we can give the the freedom we use to enjoy, if we lose freedom will die for what will probably be several centuries. In 1776 a group of brave men pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to the cause of freedom.

Are we lesser beings then them?

Are we going to surrender to the forces of evil and allow freedom to die?

      • Certainly more than 3% of us will stand fast.
We did it before, and we can do it again.

We have allies in the countries you listed, as well as OUR “fellow-travelers”. (Like certain Canadians we know and love.)

        • The 3% figure is the number of people who did the fighting, we need the support of between 25% and 33% of the population to keep the fighters supplied. There is an old saying that Amateurs study tactics but Professionals study logistics. In reality Professionals study everything but the logistics side needs a base of support from the non fighters. This support base is as important as the fighters but most people don’t realize this.

As an example a reporter once ask Ike what the most important weapons of WWII were and Ike (with out having to stop and think) said the Higgins boat and the 6X6. The Higgins boat was the landing craft that let us use open beaches instead of ports. the 6X6 is the big farm trucks that have all wheel drive. The landing craft put us ashore and the trucks kept us supplied.

Yes we did it before and we can do it again, will do it again despite the internal enemies that are a much greater danger then the external enemies.

The new Iskander-M tactical missile systems completed their first combat training launch at the Kapustin Yar training ground in the Astrakhan Region.

  22. https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/12/the_ground_zero_mosque_project_is_back.html
The Ground Zero Mosque project was and is a middle finger to the American people. There has never been a mosque of reconciliation and healing built on the site of a jihadi attack. Ever. It is, on the other hand, an Islamic pattern to build triumphal mosques on the cherished sites of conquered lands. History is riddled with triumphal mosques built on the sites of jihad attacks or appropriated from other religions: the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque on the site of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, and innumerable mosques built on the sites of Hindu temples that were demolished by Muslims all attest to that.

And now it looks as if Sharif El-Gamal is going to be able to build his own triumphal mosque at Ground Zero after all.

Read the whole thing. The odds are really stacked against us this time.

  23. Massachusetts Bill Would Force Doctors to Ask About Guns and Counsel Patients Who Own Them

Massachusetts state Representative Jon Santiago has filed a bill to require doctors to screen all patients for firearms in their homes and to counsel them on safety. It’s Bill H.2005: An Act to prevent gun violence:

Section 237. The director shall establish a program for firearm screening and counseling. Such program shall systematically screen all patients for the presence of firearms in the home. The director shall, after consultation with recognized professional medical groups and such other sources as the director deems appropriate, promulgate regulations establishing (1) the means by which and the intervals at which patients shall be screened for the presence of firearms in the home and (2) guidelines for safety counseling for individuals that screen positive for the presence of firearms in the home.

I can’t imagine that is going to pass constitutional muster. Florida attempted the opposite a few years ago, forbidding doctors to ask their patients about firearms. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals struck that law down as infringing on the doctors’ First Amendment free speech rights.

    https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/massachusetts-bill-would-force-doctors-to-ask-about-guns-and-counsel-patients-who-own-them/?utm_source=wideopen&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wos_daily&utm_content=%5B%5Brssitem_title%5D%5D

    • The doctors tasked with such GP junk in Massachusetts have such high case loads, they barely do more than skim the patient’s computerized medical history. That’s how they figure out how to pass off a piece of meat.

Maybe they’ll order tests. The technicians’ reports determine the next step on a cookie-cutter flowchart. Refer out, by the book. (Check insurance with staff.)NEXT!

Seasoned medical professionals have opted out of these internist practices. For more than a decade the medical school graduates have reflected social justice quotas. A diverse MassHealth clinic might hire barely literate staff to read firearms questions and file the responses. But how will they get around HIPAA regs and liability?

  24. WEIMAR LABOUR – AND THE ANTI FASCISTS IN ALL PARTIES WHO WON THIS ELECTION
Corporatism is that unholy “supranationalist” alliance between right wing authoritarian big business and socialist Statist elitists and is usually the guarantee of fascist systems. In the British general election the democrats and anti corporatist-fascists of all political parties have rightly punished the Liberal Democrat and Labour parties (and their fellow Remainers in the Tory Party whose ranks on the backbenches have been decimated). The Left’s hate filled – often obscene – rantings, anti semitism and democracy-destroying devotion to the EU have been dismissed by a wise electorate. So now we have a Johnson administration with a solid majority – but not too large given the much larger number of true Brexiteers the election has sent to Westminster and the dependence of so many of them on Labour Leave voters. Those MPs – plus the existing Tory “Spartans” who voted down the May betrayal – have sufficient numbers to vote against any appeasement of an aggressive EU in the trade negotiations which now follow. The 31st January at 11pm will be the legal, constitutional hour of our freedom. Make sure you celebrate. It is far more important than any New Year or any new Millennium. It will mean the freedom of the British nation – and the economic and social freedom of the British people from the stifling corporatism of left and right which destroyed our economy in 2008 and committed us in 1973 to 46 years of imprisonment in the European Union! 25. ‘Nuts!’ 75 Years Ago US Troops Stopped Hitler’s Last Advance

Pvt. Arthur Jacobson was seeking cover in the snow behind a tank moving slowly through the wooded hills of Belgium’s Ardennes, German bullets whizzing by.

That was when he lost his best friend and bazooka team partner to sniper fire. “They couldn’t hit him, he shouted,” Jacobson said wistfully. “Those were his last words.”

The recollection of his worst day in the Battle of the Bulge still haunts him, three quarters of a century later during the first return of the 95-year-old to the battlefield.

The pristine-white rows of thousands of grave markers over the remains of U.S. soldiers in cemeteries on the former front line hark back to the days when Americans made the ultimate sacrifice for a cause across the ocean.

    https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/nuts-75-years-ago-us-troops-stopped-hitlers-last-advance/?utm_source=wideopen&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wos_daily&utm_content=%5B%5Brssitem_title%5D%5D

Richard: The US ran the Germanss out of gas, often by small groups of soldiers saying, “To hell with this, they can kill me but they can’t make me run any further.” They fought, they died but the also kill the enemy and held him until reinforcements could arrive. They were cut off, short on ammo and short on food but they held.

The left around the world should stop and think, they (the left) are the spiritual descendants of the Nazi’s, while those they are either fighting or getting ready to fight are the spiritual and often physical descendants of the Battling Bastards of Bastogne, The Battling Bastards of Battan, and of many thousand little fights.

This is what our Fathers and Grandfathers did, can we do any less?

  26. Jihad and Criminality: Inseparable Bedfellows

The high cost of characterizing jihadists as “criminals,” “psychopathic thugs” and “murderers”.
    December 16, 2019
    Raymond Ibrahim

It’s official: Islamic jihad and generic criminality are intimately connected.

According to an earlier UK study:

The lines between terrorism and criminality are becoming blurred as an increasing number of former criminals join the Islamic State … Nearly 60 percent of European jihadists studied by researchers had been jailed previously… Once recruited by ISIS, these people easily transition to committing violence for a different cause… [T]he welcome from ISIS offers criminals a perceived chance at “redemption” without requiring a change in behavior.

Even so, the establishment refuses to see any direct correlation between Islam and criminality. As the director of the study himself explained, criminals “are the perfect fit” because the “Islamic State doesn’t require any intellectual sophistication. It doesn’t ask you to study religion. It makes it all like a computer game.” In other words, criminals are ideal recruits because they don’t know—nor do they care to learn—the first thing about “true” Islam.

Or, as John Brennan memorably asserted of ISIS members when he was head of the CIA, “they’re criminals. Most—many—of them are psychopathic thugs, murderers who use a religious concept and masquerade and mask themselves in that religious construct.”

  28. Clint Eastwood’s Prequel to Current Deep State Drama

Richard Jewell shatters the FBI stereotype.

Clint Eastwood, 89, has been busy promoting the new movie he produced and directed. The story he wanted to tell is a lot bigger than the eponymous Richard Jewell, faithfully played by Paul Walter Hauser as a character hard to like.

As a white, southern male, Jewell is a member of the group most vilified in American popular and political culture. On top of race and gender, which he can’t control, Jewell is a rather dim overweight gun nut and a police wannabe. When the Olympics comes to Atlanta in 1996, Jewell gets a job as a security guard.

He spots a suspicious backpack, which turns out to be a bomb. Jewell helps evacuate the area, sparing many from the blast, and is hailed as a hero. For the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Jewell is a prime suspect based on their “profile” of white males, law-enforcement wannabes who plant a bomb then detect it to gain hero status. Jewell fits the profile, but the facts of the case leave no doubt he is innocent. For the FBI, that doesn’t matter.

In exchange for sex with a reporter, an FBI agent leaks the story. Jewell is soon vilified as a terrorist, in a campaign that was worse than the movie portrays. Jewell was the prime target of late-night comedy, and Jay Leno called him the “Unadufus.” For the suspect, these were only the beginnings of sorrows.

Perhaps it has some connection to the recent revelations by Rudi Giuliani about alleged money laundering operation involving Bidens and Burisma.

It is an established fact that Ukrainian prosecutor general Victor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma, was fired after then Vice President Biden threatened to withhold aid from Ukraine.

The nuts and flakes who believe the world is getting hotter and the sky is falling surprisingly couldn’t come to an agreement about how the world was going to take more money from rich nations and pass it along to poor nations and somehow save the planet.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that the UN Summit on climate change was at risk of collapse after weeks of negotiations –

Stranger than fiction: A pro-LGBT Swedish church erected an altarpiece showing two homosexual couples in the Garden of Eden. Yet less than two weeks after unveiling the altarpiece, the church removed it following fears that another figure in the artwork could be seen as “anti-trans” or “transphobic.” Liberal churches should take this as a sign that no capitulation to the LGBT agenda will ever be enough.

    These people are just sad.

Detroit Hit With Lawsuit Alleging Thousands of Irregularities on Voter Rolls Including Dead People

Democrats insist voter fraud is insignificant and that voter ID is not needed. They should take a look at a legal dispute currently taking place in Detroit.

A watchdog group that fights for election integrity is currently suing the city for gross irregularities on their voter rolls.

    The Washington Free Beacon reports:

  33. Justin Trudeau Wants ‘Significant Penalties’ for Social Media ‘Hate Speech’
    https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2019/12/16/justin-trudeau-wants-significant-penalties-for-social-media-hate-speech/

“Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, recently made infamous over resurfaced blackface photos, has instructed his ministers to create new legislation aimed at tackling “hate speech” on social media.

The mandate letter, sent to Canada’s Minister of Heritage, calls for legislation to be drawn up imposing “significant penalties” on social media companies that do not remove so-called hate speech within 24 hours.

The letter singles out “hate speech” for special attention, before moving on to other items like child exploitation and terrorism.

Create new regulations for social media platforms, starting with a requirement that all platforms remove illegal content, including hate speech, within 24 hours or face significant penalties. This should include other online harms such as radicalization, incitement to violence, exploitation of children, or creation or distribution of terrorist propaganda.

In another letter, sent to the Minister of Justice, instructs the Minister to work with his colleagues to combat “online hate:”

Work with the Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth and the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to combat online hate and harassment.

Trudeau’s government appears to be following the lead of European states like Germany, which already imposes fines of up to 50 million euros against tech companies that fail to promptly remove so-called “hate speech.” French legislators have even considered jailing officials from tech companies that fail to meet demands to remove “hateful” content.

Canada is one of the signatories of the “Christchurch Call to Action,” a collective demand from various nation-states for social media companies to clamp down on “extremism.” The United States publicly refused to sign, citing free speech concerns.

It is unclear if blackface photos posted on social media will qualify as “hate speech” under the planned Canadian law.”

  34. Somalia conducts airstrike on al-Shabaab ‘operative’ near Dujumma
    https://thedefensepost.com/2019/12/16/us-somalia-airstrike-dujumma/

“The Somali government conducted an air strike on a suspected al-Shabaab militant in the country’s south in cooperation with the United States military, Somalia’s federal government said on Monday.

“On the evening of 16 December 2019, the Federal Government of Somalia in coordination with U.S. Africa Command, conducted an air strike against an al-Shabaab operative near Dujumma, Somalia,” a Somali government source said in a statement to The Defense Post.

“It is assessed that one al-Shabaab operative was killed in the airstrike. Also at this time, it has been assessed that no civilians have been killed or injured.”

AFRICOM carried out a drone strike against a suspected senior Shabaab leader in the same area last week.

The U.S. has about 500 troops in Somalia.

U.S. forces use the Baledogle (or Ballidoogle) airfield, in the Wanlawayn district roughly 95 km (60 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu, to launch drone strikes on al-Shabaab militants and to train Somali commandoes for counter-terrorism missions.

Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab has fought for more than a decade to topple the Somali government. The army, which largely relies on African Union Mission in Somalia forces for military support, is regularly targeted.

The Shabaab was routed from Mogadishu in 2011 by the 22,000-strong AMISOM mission, and has had to abandon most of its strongholds, but it still controls vast rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia and carries out attacks in neighboring Kenya.

U.S. strikes in Somalia surged after President Donald Trump declared southern Somalia an “area of active hostilities” in April 2017, according to rights group Amnesty International.

Shabaab militants attacked the U.S. base at Baledogle and European troops based nearby with vehicle bombs in September.”
