A touch of London Bridge: North African fare dodger pulls a knife and threatens a railway employee – Courageous travellers overwhelm the Algerian+++
Last Saturday evening, a ticket inspection in an intercity express (ICE) between Essen and Bochum escalated. A fare evader pulled a knife and threatened a railway employee. Courageous travellers overpowered and disarmed the suspect. Federal police arrested the man at Bochum Central Station. The ICE 626 was on its way to Dortmund around 6 pm. On the train, a 43-year-old railway employee wanted to check the ticket of a 41-year-old Algerian citizen. According to witnesses, the 41-year-old was not in possession of one. In addition, the man, who lives in Hanover, became more and more aggressive in the course of the conversation. When the man was asked to identify himself in order to pay a fine, the Algerian is said to have pulled out a pocket knife and pulled out the blade. Thereupon the railway employee had to flee. Courageous travellers overpowered and disarmed the suspect. When the train stopped at Bochum Central Station, the suspect fled the train. Federal police arrested the fugitive on the stairs to the pedestrian tunnel. A breath alcohol test on the 41-year-old showed that he was drunk to a not inconsiderable 1.9 per mille. After consultation with the public prosecutor’s office, the latter ordered a blood sample to be taken from the suspect. To prevent further crimes, he was later taken into police custody. The Federal Police started criminal proceedings against the man who was known to the police for fare evasion, attempted assault and threats.

Iranian Vice President Says Tehran Continues to Sell Oil Despite US Sanctions – Reports (sputniknews, Dec 2, 2019)

“Iran is the fifth-largest oil-producing nation, but has found it more difficult to export oil at full capacity amid increasing isolation from Western countries following Washington’s pull-out from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposition of the “toughest-ever” sanctions.
Iranian Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri claims that Tehran is continuing to sell oil, despite US sanctions on its oil exports, Reuters reported.
“Despite America’s pressure … and its imposed sanctions on our oil exports, we still continue to sell our oil by using other means … when even friendly countries have stopped purchasing our crude fearing America’s penalties”, Jahangiri said.
He continued on by saying that the US has “failed to bring our oil exports to zero as planned”.
The statement comes after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in November that Washington would terminate its sanctions waiver beginning on 15 December and called on Tehran to immediately cease its uranium enrichment activities.
Washington’s sanctions have hindered Iran in selling its crude oil abroad, cutting into a vital source of government income. While Iranian President Hassan Rouhani guaranteed that the money collected from cutting gasoline subsidies would go to the poor, Tehran also requires cutting back spending in order to overcome the sanctions.
Even with the hike in gasoline prices, Iran still subsidises fuel prices. Its economy continues to be largely state-planned, despite privatisation efforts. Among other major subsidies are bread and wheat, diesel fuel, heating oil, and electricity.
In the meantime, Iranian Minister of Industry and Trade Reza Rahmani promised that prices will not be raised through the end of the current Iranian year, which ends on 21 March. However, the rise in gasoline prices came swiftly and without warning overnight, signalling that further cuts likely would follow the same way in order to attempt and control the outcry.
Nationwide protests in Iraq began in early October, with people demanding the government’s resignation, as well as economic reforms, better living conditions, social welfare, and an end to corruption.
The unrest has reportedly left over 400 people killed and thousands more injured…”

“Many of Turkey’s allies in NATO have condemned its military operation “Peace Spring” in Syria, targeting mostly local Kurdish militia, such as the military wing of the US-led coalition’s ally – Syrian Democratic Forces. Ankara continued the operation despite criticism from the alliance.
Turkey is not trying to “blackmail” NATO members into forcing them to lend support to Ankara’s operation against Syrian Kurds by skewing the vote on a defence plan for the Baltics and Poland, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed Turkish source.
“NATO is an institution where Turkey has full veto rights, politically and militarily, and there are procedures here. There is no such thing as Turkey blackmailing, a statement like that is unacceptable”, the source said.
According to an earlier report by Reuters, citing anonymous NATO officials, Ankara thwarted the approval of the defence plan for the Baltic States and Poland by using its veto right in the vote, alleging that it was tied to NATO members refusing to support Turkey’s offensive in northern Syria.
“[The Turks] are taking Eastern Europeans hostage, blocking approval of this military planning until they get concessions”, one of the sources told Reuters.
Sources claimed that Ankara demanded to recognise the Kurdish YPG as a terrorist organisation in exchange for lifting the veto. Another source clarified that it was supposed to be a part of a separate defence plan for Turkey and would have been done if the country was attacked from Syrian territory. But this defence plan was never approved reportedly due to the US withdrawing support for it…”

An improvised explosive device has gone off in front of a Russian armoured police vehicle in Syria, Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Monday.
According to the ministry’s statement, the incident occurred as a Russian-Turkish joint patrol conducted route reconnaissance some 1.5 kilometres to the west of a town in the Kobane district of Aleppo Governorate in northern Syria.
The three servicemen who were in the vehicle at the moment of the explosion sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries, the ministry added. There was some damage to the vehicle as well…”
Terrorists freed early to be sent back to jail as associate of London Bridge attacker first to be recalled (telegraph, Dec 2, 2019)

“Aclose associate of the London Bridge attacker was arrested on Sunday night in a crackdown that could see a number of terrorists returned to jail, The Telegraph can reveal.
Nazam Hussain, 34, was arrested on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.
He was one of 74 convicted terrorists being vetted in the wake of Friday’s attack and sources have told The Telegraph “a number” are expected to be sent back to prison in the coming days.
The arrest was not linked to the London Bridge attack, police said.
Hussain and Usman Khan were jailed in 2012 for terrorist offences. They were both released on licence on the same day in December after their sentences were reduced on appeal.
It comes as the second victim of Khan’s attack was named as Saskia Jones, a 23-year-old University of Cambridge graduate who recently applied to join the police.
She was a volunteer with the university’s Learning Together programme and attended the five-year anniversary event for the prisoner rehabilitation scheme at Fishmongers’ Hall where Khan began his rampage.
Boris Johnson sought to blame Labour for the early release of Khan, who killed two people in the attack, as the political row over the atrocity intensified.
The Prime Minister said Khan, who was freed halfway through a 16-year jail sentence, was on the streets because of laws introduced by a “Leftie government”.
But Jeremy Corbyn said cuts to public services had contributed to the terrorist attack, warning that people cannot be kept safe “on the cheap”.
The Telegraph can also disclose that Mr Corbyn protested against the extradition of British terror suspects to the US as Anjem Choudary, a mentor to the London Bridge attacker, led another rally for the same cause just yards away, in 2012.
Separately it emerged that venues which host large events should legally put in place a plan to respond to terror attacks rather than relying on “have-a-go heroes’.
Sixty-nine victims of terror attacks wrote to Monday’s Daily Telegraph asking for new rules to “mandate all owners of events spaces to have in place a basic security plan”.
Jack Merritt, the first victim of the London Bridge attack to be named, is believed to have worked with Khan when the terrorist was imprisoned at the high-security HMP Whitemoor.
It has emerged that Khan, who was shot dead by police on Friday, was seen as a success story of Learning Together, which Mr Merritt worked for.
He was used as a case study by the initiative to highlight its work with ex-offenders.
Staff members even took part in a 10km run to raise money to buy Khan a computer on his release so he could continue writing, despite stringent bail conditions that prevented him from using the internet. He sent them a thank-you note saying the project had a “special place in my heart” and was “more than just an organisation”.
But last week, Khan, 28, used his connection to the project to circumvent his licence conditions and get permission to go to London unsupervised.
In the wake of the attack, Mr Johnson announced that the Government was reviewing the licence terms of 74 jihadists who were freed. The Prime Minister told The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One that “the 74 other individuals who’ve been let out early … are being properly invigilated so as to make sure there is no threat to the public”.
Ministry of Justice officials are said to have worked through the weekend to vet the criminals, with Robert Buckland, the Justice Secretary, taking charge and expecting a report on all of them on his desk on Sunday night.
Officials trawled through emails, call records and meetings with other former extremists to “make sure the licensing conditions have been complied with, if not why not”. One source said “a number” would be returned to prison in the coming days.
Hussain was visited by West Midlands Police officers assisting with the reviews at his home in Stoke-on-Trent on Saturday night. Whilst checking that he was complying with the terms of his licence they are understood to have found material that caused concern and he was taken into custody.
A West Midlands spokesman said a 34-year-old had been arrested “on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
“These searches continue. There is no information to suggest that the arrested man was involved in the incident at London Bridge on Friday. There was no immediate risk to public safety.”
Hussain and Khan’s parents came from the same village in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and the pair were close friends, growing up in Stoke-on-Trent.
Disciples of the hate preacher Choudary, they planned to travel to Pakistan in January 2011, but were arrested the month before.
Hussain and Khan were given indeterminate sentences for public protection. But in April 2013, both successfully appealed and were instead given 16-year sentences, which meant they were eligible for release in December last year.
While Khan moved to Stafford, Hussain returned to his family home in Stoke. Sources stressed that he was not arrested for breaching his bail conditions.
Convicted terrorists who are released from prison under licence are required to follow a strict set of conditions. These include things like not using the internet, not mixing with former associates, keeping to a strict curfew and only attending an approved mosque.
As part of the review into convicted terrorists on licence, The Telegraph understands that former inmates will be banned from attending and speaking at events such as the one where Khan carried out his attack on Friday. He had been allowed to attend a similar event in Whitehall earlier this year with an escort.
However, last week he was given permission to travel to London unattended to attend the Learning Together seminar.”

“Forbes magazine has appealed for recognition of the phenomenon of Christian persecution around the globe as a crisis demanding focused attention.
Report after report “has been raising the issues that relate to the persecution of Christians globally,” notes Forbes contributor Ewelina U. Ochab, which includes “atrocities that amount to genocide and crimes against humanity.”
Faith-based persecution affects Christians more than any other religious group on the planet, Ms. Ochab observes, and therefore anti-Christian persecution deserves to be addressed as a critical issue in its own right.
Ochab cites a recent report by the Bishop of Truro for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which identified “a global phenomenon of discriminatory behavior and physical attacks, some sadly deadly, on Christian children, women and men, often from the world’s poorest communities.”
“Studies consistently show that Christians suffer significantly higher levels of persecution and intolerance,” she adds, and far from diminishing, the persecution of Christians has increased in 73 countries, according to Open Doors’ World Watch List 2019, and now affects 245 million Christians.
Despite the worrisome growth of the often violent persecution of Christians worldwide, “the extent of the crisis facing Christians persecuted for their faith remains little known and understood,” Ochab laments, citing a report titled “Persecuted and Forgotten,” produced by the pontifical charity Aid to the Church in Need.
The UK report stressed the need for a new approach to this global issue, “one that recognizes that the widespread issue of persecution of Christians is a phenomenon and not a series of single incidents of violent human rights abuses,” Ochab recounts.
In her article, Ochab also holds up the example of the Hungarian government, which has been a pioneer in tackling Christian persecution head-on by establishing a State Secretariat for the Aid of Persecuted Christians, tasked with “providing direct support for persecuted Christian communities and raising domestic and international political and public awareness of the phenomenon and increasing scale of Christian persecution in the 21st century.”
As Breitbart News reported, last week Hungary hosted its second international conference on aid to persecuted Christians, emphasizing the need to help persecuted Christians where they are rather than encouraging them to abandon their homelands.
Addressing the conference, the head of the Secretariat, Tristan Azbei, declared that some 44 Christians would violently lose their lives during the course of the four-day meeting simply because of their faith in Jesus Christ.
“We have 245 million reasons to meet,” Mr. Azbei stated, “one for every Christian in the world who faces extreme persecution,” adding that “those are only the ones we know of.”
Azbei contrasted the unprecedented persecution facing Christians around the world in 2019 — the “greatest, best-kept secret” — with the “shameful silence of the West,” which turns a blind eye as if such persecution did not exist.
For his part, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s minister of foreign affairs, noted that “Christianophobia is the last acceptable form of discrimination in the world.”
The Government of Hungary has also set up the Hungary Helps Program, Ochab observes, the “only state-run program of its kind.” Hungary Helps furnishes a broad range of humanitarian services to Christians persecuted for their faith in many countries in the Middle East and Africa.
Hungary’s “tailored approach” to the problem is unique, Ochab notes, and “is not replicated elsewhere.”
A comprehensive response will not happen without “recognizing that the atrocities are a part of a global phenomenon,” Ochab concludes. “Until then, the response will be too fragmented to make a change to the lives of those targeted.””
‘F*** the Jews, Kill the Jews’ – Senior Rabbi Beaten in Khan’s London (breitbart, Dec 2, 2019)

“A senior rabbi was left bleeding on the ground after two teens brutally beat him while shouting “fuck the Jews” and “kill the Jews” in London.
On the same evening as the London Bridge terrorist attack, a rabbi who was visiting London was beaten in the Amhurst Park area of Stamford Hill, Hackney.
Two teenagers attacked the rabbi at 9:45 on Friday night, a time in which orthodox Jews refrain from using telephones.
The two youths shouted, “fuck the Jews” and “kill the Jews” while beating the rabbi, according to the Shomrim, a Jewish neighbourhood watch group.
The identities of the apparently antisemitic teens remain unknown at the time of writing of this report.
The rabbi has since flown back to Israel.
Herschel Gluck OBE, a prominent rabbi in Stamford Hill, said in a statement that: “A rabbi on a visit to London was beaten up in a totally unprovoked attack by two youths, on Friday night. For a government that claims to care about antisemitism, this is another in a long sequence of such incidents where there is no credible response or followup commensurate to the seriousness that the authorities claim to take such crimes!”
The antisemitic attack on the rabbi occurred on the same day as the London Bridge killer, Usman Khan, killed two people in a terrorist attack that left another three wounded, although the two incidents are not believed to be connected, the Jerusalem Post reports.
Yaakov Hagoel, the vice-chairman of the World Zionist Organization, said that antisemitism is on the rise in the UK. He said: “In 2019, nearly 300,000 Jews are living in fear for their own future and their own security.”
Last week the Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, Ephraim Mirvis, slammed the far-left leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, saying that he is “unfit for office” over his handling of antisemitism allegations.
“It is a failure to see this as a human problem rather than a political one. It is a failure of culture. It is a failure of leadership. A new poison – sanctioned from the top – has taken root in the Labour Party,” he said.”

“Pope Francis has sent the papal almoner back to the Greek island of Lesbos to pick up 33 asylum-seekers and bring them back to Rome.
Polish Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, whom the pope appointed to head up his personal charitable giving in 2013, flew to Lesbos on Monday and is expected back on Wednesday with a group of young refugees and some families from Afghanistan, Cameroon, and Togo.
The pontiff personally visited the island of Lesbos in 2016 at the height of Europe’s migrant crisis and brought back with him on the papal plane three Muslim families from Syria as a grand “gesture of welcome.”
Lesbos had been dubbed “the gateway to Europe” because of the enormous number of migrants arriving weekly to its shores, en route to European countries to the north.
At the time, the Vatican said it would assume responsibility for the upkeep of the three families, enlisting the community of St. Egidio to provide hospitality for them and help them integrate into Italian society.
Last May, on the third anniversary of the papal trip, the pope asked his almoner to return to the island to “renew solidarity with the Greek people and refugees” and to make “a further gesture of solidarity” by bringing back a group of asylum-seekers.
According to a communiqué from the papal almoner’s office sent to Breitbart News, “after an intense period of official negotiations between the relevant bodies in order to open this new humanitarian corridor, the Ministry of the Interior of the Italian Republic has given the final consent to carry out the operation.”
In his humanitarian mission, Cardinal Krajewski took with him some leaders of the Community of St. Egidio who will assist him in bringing back the refugees. Later this month, the Vatican said it will bring in ten more refugees to Italy to help them obtain “international protection.”
The Holy See has once again guaranteed the financial upkeep of the migrants, with help from the Community of St. Egidio.
With its 630 square miles and a population of over 90 thousand inhabitants, Lesbos is the third largest Greek island and the eighth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Because of its geographical position, it was the preferred arrival point for Syrian refugees and others from the Middle East wishing to migrate to Europe.
Pope Francis has made outreach to migrants a hallmark of his six-year papacy, encouraging leaders to generously open their borders to migrants and pushing for a greater “racial mixing” and “mingling of cultures.””

“Another five years of fighting in Yemen would cost as much as $29 billion just to sustain the current level of humanitarian aid, an international relief group said Monday, a sum that amounts to more than the entire annual humanitarian budget globally.
The war in Yemen has killed over 100,000 people and created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, leaving millions suffering from food and medical shortages.
A report by the International Rescue Committee says that 24 million Yemenis, or 80% of the population, need humanitarian aid and 16 million are living on the verge of famine. The war also caused Yemen’s economy to shrink by 50%, it said.
The group warned that with the current rate of aid, it would take 20 years to return Yemen to pre-conflict levels of child hunger, which is “twice the agreed timetable for ending malnutrition around the world,” according to David Miliband, president of the IRC.
An estimated 160,000 Yemeni children under five years old suffered from severe acute malnutrition, the report said.
“Today’s grim predictions are an insight into the colossal cost of the Age of Impunity: where wars are fought with a complete disregard for civilian life and neglected by diplomats charged with ending the violence and holding perpetrators of international law to account,” Miliband said.
The conflict in Yemen began with the 2014 takeover of the capital, Sanaa, by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels who control much of the country’s north. A Saudi-led coalition allied with the internationally recognized government has been fighting the Houthis since March 2015.
The IRC said the conflict has displaced 3 million people, including over 350,000 in 2019 alone. It called on the U.S, Britain and France to pressure the warring parties into an immediate and countrywide cease-fire, and to return to peace talks.
It said a cease-fire brokered by the U.N. last December in the Yemeni port of Hodeida, the main passageway for aid and a lifeline for Houthi-controlled areas, prevented massive humanitarian suffering “but the agreement remains a localized effort.” The deal, which also included a prisoner swap, has yet to be fully implemented.
Also, the IRC said the recent power-sharing agreement which ended weeks of infighting between the internationally recognized government and the southern separatists “offers hope for more inclusive peace talks.”
Saudi Arabia began holding indirect talks with the Houthis in Oman in September, after the Houthis claimed an attack on Saudi oil infrastructure that affected global energy supplies. The U.S. blamed the attack on Iran, which denied involvement.
The talks are focused on interim agreements, such as re-opening Yemen’s main international airport in Sanaa, which was shut down by the Saudi-led coalition in 2016.
The IRC said these developments offer “a rare window of opportunity” to push for peace.”

Sunday’s move by police in the city of Lahore to pursue treason cases against the demonstrators came hours before a tweet from Prime Minister Imran Khan suggesting he would end the 1984 ban on student unions.
Amnesty International condemned the move in a statement Sunday. It asked Pakistan to drop any charges and release those arrested following Friday’s rally in Lahore.
Police said the protesters had chanted against “state institutions,” a term referring to the country’s powerful military. They said the rally was attended by between 250 and 300 people, all of whom would be charged.”

A video out of China shows a man being called in and interrogated by authorities for the crime of criticizing the police on social media.
The clip shows the man handcuffed to a metal chair as he is asked personal questions.

The man explains that he was drunk when he made the comments and is then asked to apologize to the police.
“I’m so sorry, I’m wrong, I know, I know that now, please forgive me, I won’t do it again ever,” he states.

In recent days, devastating footage of Iranian protesters being violently attacked by government security forces emerged. Iran is in an economic crisis and the citizens have been suffering from a brutal dictatorship for far too long.
Iran charges families for bullets used to kill protesters
The Islamic Republic has demanded that some families pay for the cost of the bullets used to kill relatives during nationwide anti-government protests as the estimated death toll continues to rise.
Human rights NGO Amnesty International reported that Iranian authorities would demand the payments for the bullets or compensation for destroyed property when returning the victims’ bodies to their families. Families have also been warned against holding funerals or speaking to the media. In many cases, victims’ bodies have not been returned to families at all.
According to the NGO’s most recent update, the reported death toll numbers at least 161 protesters, although “the real death toll is likely to be significantly higher.” Iranian opposition website Kalemeh reported an estimated death toll of 366 protesters, although more recent reports by the site imply that the death toll is even higher, according to Radio Farda.
Some Iranian officials have begun admitting that some protesters may have been “wrongly targeted and killed,” although “it is not currently possible to confirm or refute such reports with any degree of certainty,” according to IRGC commander Mohammad Reza Yazdi.

Indian Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik said that there have been 950 incidents of ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Jammu and Kashmir region in last three months since this August.
“All violations of ceasefire and infiltration are taken up with Pakistan authorities at the appropriate level through the established mechanism of hotlines, flag meetings, Directorate General of Military Operations talks as well as diplomatic channels between the two countries”, the Indian junior minister said in the parliament on Monday.
The recent escalation of tensions between the two South Asian rivals over the disputed Kashmir have been witnessing at least 100 instances of cross-border fire per day from the Pakistani side, as per data presented by the Indian Defence Ministry on Monday. New Delhi has revoked the special status to Indian side of Kashmir, which, according to Pakistan, violates the Indian Constitution, the United Nations Security Council resolutions on Kashmir, and the Shimla Agreement between India and Pakistan.

Ukrainian MP Alexander Dubinsky announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the Office of the Prosecutor General is indicting Burisma owner Nikolai Zlochevsky, and the consequences could be dire for Hunter Biden.
Dubinsky alleges that Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden, and his affiliates received $16.5 million from the Ukrainian gas firm. He claims that this money was transferred to Biden and his associates as apart of a criminal scheme.
“Zlochevsky was charged with this new accusation by the Office of the Prosecutor General but the press ignored it,” Dubinsky said. “It was issued on November 14.”

“Over the first 10 months of 2019, 8.2 per cent of the total recognized refugees in Germany had their status cancelled,” the ministry said. According to official data, the status cancellation percentage stood at 2.1 per cent in 2018.
Since the obligation to participate in the protection status screening process in December 2018, Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has summoned tens of thousands of recognized refugees for personal questioning.
The ministry told local dpa that some 49,100 refugees were summoned for interrogation this year, adding that 28,222 refugees were questioned during this period.
According to official data, Germany currently hosts around one million refugees.”
