This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

French Court Charges Moroccan Woman with Terrorism, Kidnapping Minors

“The Paris Assize Court sentenced Moroccan Jihane Makhzoumi to 14 years in prison on charges of terrorism and kidnapping on Friday, November 29.
Makhzoumi appeared shocked at the terms of her sentencing, according to French news outlet Le Parisien. Her lawyers, Clemence Witt and Florian Lastelle, intend to appeal her sentence, citing a lack of psychiatric examination.
In August 2014, the 38-year-old Moroccan woman traveled from France to Syria with her husband, Eddy Leroux, to support the ISIS cause.
The radicalized couple, who had been living in France, took a total of four children with them to join ISIS in the city of Raqqa.
Only one child—the youngest of the group—was born to Makhzoumi and Leroux. Two children were born of Makhzoumi’s first marriage, and another child was born of Leroux’s first marriage.
Neither Makhzoumi or Leroux informed their former spouses of the decision to take the children to Syria. Leroux told his ex-wife that he was taking their daughter to Morocco.
Leroux, a French convert to Islam, was presumed dead in 2015. Of the four children that the couple took to Syria, only three returned to France with Makhzoumi in October 2016.
Still in Syria is an 8-year-old girl named Jana, the daughter of Leroux and his first wife, Ilham Tarbouni.
Jana’s mother firmly believes that Makhzoumi knows where the girl is and that she intentionally left Jana in Syria.
In June 2015, Makhzoumi told her ex-husband through WhatsApp that she had helped someone in Syria take a child who was not hers. Investigators believe she is referring to Jana in this message.
In September 2016, shortly before she returned to France, Makhzoumi sent her ex-husband a WhatsApp message stating that “her father (Leroux) wanted her (Jana) to stay. It is the will of her father.”
In her final statement at court on Friday, Makhzoumi apologized to Jana’s family, her ex-husband, and her family.
Tarbouni has been continuously appealing to the French government to take action to recover her daughter, who has been missing for three years.
In March 2019, Tarbouni’s brother traveled to Qamichli in northern Syria to search for Jana.”
Ankara slams Europe’s delays in defense trade

“Some Western countries have imposed a “covered embargo” on Turkey due to its military offensive into Syria, ?smail Demir, the head of the Defense Industries Directorate, has told daily Hürriyet.
“You have seen what kind of explanations came from various countries following ‘Operation Peace Spring.’ Even in a multinational project like the A400M, restrictions have been claimed. We’ve known for some time that there are some implicit restrictions,” Demir said.
“They did not officially recognize any sanctions, but Turkey has seen a slowdown in demands, the extension of deadlines, and attitude of rejection by some companies for the delivery of some equipment,” he said…”
‘Turkey has not received support it expected from NATO’

“Turkey has not received the support it expected from NATO, said the country’s communications director on Monday.
“Turkey has not received the kind of robust support it expected from NATO in recent years,” Fahrettin Altun said on Twitter.
“Despite this, Turkey has contributed to various NATO missions with its second largest army in the organization. We will continue to contribute but also expect support for our concerns,” Altun added.
Noting that NATO is preparing for a summit on Dec. 3-4, Altun said: “As threats to our security have increased in recent years, Turkey is ready to help lead a strategic conversation”.
Altun went on to say that Turkey expects a common security strategy that actively supports its security concerns “in return for its commitment and contributions to NATO”.
“NATO can address threats to the alliance and its member states only through clarity about the nature of such threats,” he added.
“Collective security is the most important pillar of stability in peace times and security in war times. A failure to adequately acknowledge the legitimate threat perceptions and security concerns of member states will weaken the alliance and make NATO less credible,” Altun concluded.”
Haftar’s forces conduct heavy airstrikes around Tripoli

“Foreign aircraft supporting the forces of eastern Libya General Khalifa Haftar carried out airstrikes on civilian houses in Al-Sawani, killing two people and injuring 10, said the Operation Volcano of Rage press office on Sunday, cited by The Libya Observer.
It said there were women and children among the civilian victims and it posted a video showing the aftermath of the airstrike.
It said Haftar’s warplanes also carried out airstrikes on Sirte Fodder Factory on Sunday, causing only material damage.
Also on Sunday, Haftar’s forces carried out an attack at the frontline in Sadiya in an attempt to advance on the frontlines in Al-Sawani and Krimiya in southern Tripoli, but they were stopped by Libyan Army forces under the command of Presidential Council’s government, The Libya Observer said.
Sources from Operation Volcano of Rage said the airstrikes were the most violent in a long time as they involved over 60 military vehicles together with war planes, drones, and Russian helicopters.
The sources said Haftar’s attacks had failed to achieve any advances on the ground and his forces lost many fighters.”
Berlin politician defies far-right murder threat

“A prominent Berlin integration politician has made public a presumed far-right murder threat. Sawsan Chebli was told she would be “eliminated” if she did not quit her post in the city-state’s senate by Christmas Eve.
A defiant Chebli, Berlin city-state’s official campaigner for civil engagement, replied on Twitter Monday: “I won’t let myself be intimidated by you Nazis because I raise my voice for diversity…,” and closed her remark emphasizing: “now more than ever.”
The threat — she made public in photographs published online on Monday — follows emails containing death threats sent to two federal Green party parliamentarians Cem Özdemir and Claudia Roth on October 27, signed then by a right-wing extremist group calling itself “Atomwaffen Division Deutschland.”
Chebli, 41, a Social Democrat and Muslim and deputy spokeswoman for Germany’s Foreign Ministry until 2016, grew up in Berlin. Her Palestinian parents arrived in 1970 from a refugee camp in Lebanon.
‘Third’ on far-right murder list
Monday’s threatening tweet, containing racist terminology, names Özdemir and Roth, and said Chebli would be third in a “right-wing extremist-initiated murder series” instigated with “financial incentives” for “easy manipulated Nazis.”
“We demand that you publicly declare your resignation from office by 0:00 hours on 24.12.2019,” wrote the anonymous intimidators who signed off with the words “Soldaten der Cyberreichtswehr” (“soldiers of the cyber imperial army”)
Berlin award — ‘Made in Germany has many faces’
On Sunday, Chebli had attended Berlin city’s “Farben Bekennen” (“Show your Colors”) gala award ceremony to honor special contributions made to German society by refugees.
Sunday’s main recipient was the head of an Arabic restaurant in Berlin, picked by a jury of 12, including former football professional Arne Friedrich and German public television presenter Dunja Hayali.
Chebli had initiated Berlin city-state’s award in 2018 as its deputy minister for civil engagement and International Issues.
Files 20 criminal complaints weekly
She has often been the target of abuse and threat via social media, saying last June that she filed between 20 and 30 criminal complaints each week.
In October last year, she deactivated her Facebook account in reaction to a series of hate messages directed at her.”
An adjournment was called at the Alberta legislature Monday after a man fatally shot himself outside the provincial building at around 3 p.m.
A witness told Global News a man shot himself with a handgun on the front steps.
Police officers were seen performing CPR on a body on the steps. Police taped off the area and covered the body with a pink blanket.
Members of the legislature were debating a private member’s bill when discussion was halted and an adjournment was called due to a health and safety concern.
The house was adjourned until 7:30 p.m.
Edmonton police confirmed the incident is non-criminal.
