Large-scale anti-terror op launched in E Turkey

“Turkey has launched a counter-terrorism operation in the east of the country in a bid to neutralize PKK terrorists and thwart potential attacks in the coming winter, the country’s Interior Ministry said on Nov. 23.
Some 2,250 security personnel comprising of gendarmerie commandos and special police forces are taking part in the “K?ran-7 Operation of Munzur Valley”, launched in Tunceli province.
The PKK terrorists were afraid to even communicate among themselves, according to Turkey’s interior minister.
Süleyman Soylu said that the terrorist organization was able to recruit 108 new terrorists in 2019, whereas this figure had once been as high as 5,500. He added that 221 terrorists had surrendered to Turkish forces during the year.
Local Tunceli authorities released a statement that the operation, which sought to eradicate the terror group’s presence in Turkey, continued “successfully with determination.”
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.”
Turkey begins fourth round of Med Sea drilling

“Turkey has kicked off the fourth drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean, the country’s energy minister said on Nov. 23.
“We are currently conducting the fourth drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean. We’ll keep drilling until we find it [oil],” Fatih Dönmez said.
The minister’s remarks came during his speech in parliament’s planning and budget committee meeting.
Stressing that Turkey will defend both its own rights and the people’s rights in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Dönmez said: “The initiator of the present problem is the long-standing incompatible attitude of the Greek Cypriot administration”.
Before his speech, Dönmez has told reporters that works for an undersea electricity cable link and natural gas pipeline between Turkey and Turkish Cyprus are ongoing.
Although work continues for the cable line and pipeline to meet the island’s needs, the work schedule and completion date have not yet been set, he said.
Turkey, as a guarantor nation for the TRNC, is currently carrying out hydrocarbon exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean with two drilling vessels, Fatih and Yavuz, along with Oruc Reis and Barbaros Hayrettin Pasa seismic vessels in the same region.
Turkey has consistently contested the Greek Cypriot administration’s unilateral drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean, asserting that the TRNC also has rights to the resources in the area.
Cyprus was divided into a Turkish Cypriot state in the north and a Greek Cypriot administration in the south after a 1974 military coup was followed by violence against the island’s Turkish people and Turkey’s intervention as a guarantor power.
In 2017, after two years of negotiations, the latest attempt to reunify the long-divided Mediterranean island ended in failure.

In recent years, a U.S. oil company discovered a gigantic gas field off the island’s south coast. Experts assume that it may hold 227 billion cubic meters of gas — a find worth approximately 40 billion euros (44.8 billion US dollar). When the Greek Cypriot side permitted international energy companies to extract the gas, they sent ships to explore the area. The Turkish side responded to this move sending two drilling ships to the area.”
Turkey ‘neutralizes’ 5 PKK terrorists in N. Iraq

“The Turkish military neutralized five PKK terrorists amid air-backed operations in northern Iraq, Turkey’s Ministry of National Defense said on Saturday.
One terrorist in the Sinat-Haftanin region of northern Iraq was neutralized as part of Operation Claw-3, along with four more neutralized in the Zap region, the ministry said on Twitter.
It added: “Our operations are going to continue without pause.”
Turkish authorities often use the word “neutralized” in statements to imply terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.
On May 27, Turkey launched Operation Claw against the PKK in the Hakurk region of northern Iraq, followed by its second and third phases in July and late August.
More than 400 PKK terrorists were “neutralized” in northern Iraq over the past four months, according to the ministry.
In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU — has been responsible for deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.”
West ignores sufferings of Turks, Muslims: Historian

“The West does not want to address the suffering of Muslims and Turks at international forums, an American historian said.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency on massacre and persecution that Muslim Turks faced when they were forced to flee Bulgaria to Turkey during the 1877-78 Russo-Ottoman war, William Holt said the magnitudes of persecution in that period is not sufficiently known either in Turkey or in the international arena.
He said the West deny sufferings of Muslims, adding the reasons behind this are orientalism, hostility towards Turks and Islam, and the Christian lobbies in the West.
Holt went on to say the incidents happened during the war are reflected unilaterally.
The 1877-78 war saw the Ottoman Empire lose territory to Russia in the Caucasus while other Orthodox Christian nations secured independence in the Balkans.
Mosques as refugee shelters
Muslims who were forced to flee from Bulgaria to Turkey, took refuge in several mosques — including Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) — in Istanbul, the historian noted.
Depicting the stories of immigrants through the painting of a Hungarian painter, he said: “In this painting, you can see the refugees inside the Hagia Sophia. In 1877, there were around 8,000-12,000 refugees in Hagia Sophia for around 4 months. These immigrants were very sick.
Children, elderly men, and women can be seen in the painting, he said, adding this is perhaps a forgotten story of Hagia Sophia. There is a surprising and important story of Hagia Sophia being a refugee shelter.
Also commenting on the 1915 events during the Ottoman era, he noted when the Muslims are oppressed, the West said it is a civil war, but when the Christians are oppressed they call it a “genocide”.
Turkey’s position on the events of 1915 is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia took place when some sided with invading Russians and revolted against Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.
Turkey objects to the presentation of the incidents as “genocide” but describes the 1915 events as a tragedy in which both sides suffered casualties.
Ankara has repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians from Turkey and Armenia plus international experts to examine the issue.
Forgotten refugee crisis
Speaking at the event — entitled the Balkan Losses: Forgotten Immigrants of The Russo-Turkish War — held by the Turkish Historical Society, Holt said there is a lot of false information about the influence of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans, adding Turks have always been depicted as cruel in the West.
“According to the West, the Turks were always cruel and were never oppressed. The West has never seen Turks as victims or oppressed,” he said.
Historian Holt also presented his latest book “The Balkan Reconquista and Turkey’s Forgotten Refugee Crisis” at the event.
The book uncovers the difficulties faced by Turks who were forced to migrate during the 1877-78 Russo-Ottoman war. Also, in his book, Holt tells the story of the suffering of Muslims during migration, and what they went through after coming to Istanbul during the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877–1878.”
French Islamic State mother jailed for 14 months

“A French mother who took her three children to Syria to join the Islamic State jihadist group in 2014 was sentenced to 14 years in jail in Paris on Friday.
Judges convicted Jihane Makhzoumi, 38, of charges including terrorism and child abandonment, highlighting her “informed participation in a criminal enterprise” described as “bloodthirsty”.
“Only a significant sentence could be imposed under these circumstances,” the judges added.
Makhzoumi left France with her partner Eddy Leroux — another IS convert believed to have been killed in Syria — her three young children and a fourth child, the daughter of Leroux.
She was arrested at a Paris airport when she returned along with her three children in 2016 — Leroux’s daughter having apparently been left behind in Syria.
The prosecutor had told the court Makhzoumi had a personality of “appalling egocentrism” and had “at no time shown a capacity for empathy”.
“This departure to Syria is absolutely not an accident, it is the result of years of radicalisation,” said the prosecutor.
“The lives of their own children do not matter that much, in comparison to their project.”
Makhzoumi appeared visibly shocked when the verdict was announced and her lawyers labelled the sentence “totally disproportionate” and said they would appeal.”

Thousands march in France to protest alarming femicide levels

“Thousands rallied in Paris on Saturday to seek an end to gender violence and femicide in a country where at least 116 women have been killed by current or former partners this year, sparking national outrage.
The march began near the French capital’s main opera house, with several protesters holding up placards bearing the image of a relative or friend killed in gender violence.
“Break the silence, not women,” read one sign. “Down with the patriarchy,” read another.
About 30 marches have been organised throughout France. They involve nearly 70 organisations, political parties, unions and associations.
“We think this will be a historic march,” Caroline De Haas, one of the organisers, said, adding that “the level of awareness is moving at breakneck speed.”
Central Paris was awash in a sea of purple — the colour of the protesters.
“We can no longer count the number of cases where femicides could have been avoided,” the organisers said on Facebook Saturday.
“With this march, we will make the public authorities take appropriate measures.”
The government is expected to announce about 40 measures on Monday to tackle the scourge.
A total of 116 women have been murdered in France so far this year by their husband, partner or ex-partner, according to an AFP investigation.
The group “Femicides by companions or ex” meanwhile puts the toll at 137.
“In 32 femicides, it’s Christmas,” read one sign at the march.
It shows the scale of the problem as 121 were killed in France last year, according to official figures.
One woman is killed in France every three days by their partner or ex-partner, while marital violence affects 220,000 Frenchwomen every year.
“Our system is not working to protect these women,” Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet recently said.
The killings in France are part of a global scourge that shows no signs of abating, with 87,000 women and girls killed in 2017 according to the UN — over half of them killed either by their spouse, partner or own family.”
