Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. New research in US reveals anti-Muslim bias towards Syrian refugees (thenational, Nov 2, 2019)
    https://www.thenational.ae/world/the-americas/new-research-in-us-reveals-anti-muslim-bias-towards-syrian-refugees-1.932083

“New research into America’s attitude towards Syrian refugees has revealed a distinct bias against Muslims.

The study showed United States citizens were more sympathetic towards individuals who were Christian, female and English-speaking.

Researchers also found that the extent of bias varied, with those describing themselves as white, Republican and Christian most likely to hold anti-Muslim sentiment.

“This anti-Muslim sentiment with respect to refugees and migrants has been documented in Western Europe,” said Dr Melina Platas, an assistant professor of political science at NYU Abu Dhabi and a co-author of the research.

“We’ve seen some evidence of anti-Muslim sentiment in other contexts in the United States, so we were kind of expecting we would find something similar in the evaluation of refugees.

“The finding with gender we hadn’t anticipated to the same extent. It wasn’t clear which direction it would go.

“That result perhaps reflects that Americans view women as more valuable and give them preference.”

The study, based on a survey carried out in 2016 prior to President Donald Trump’s election, was recently published in the academic journal PLOS One.

A total of 1,800 respondents were each shown photographs of three pairs of Syrian refugees with varying characteristics and asked to grade them on a score of one to seven.

Selected by the polling organisation YouGov to be representative of the American population in terms of gender, race, political outlook and other variables, the respondents were also asked whom among each pair they would prefer to admit to the United States.

Muslims were, on average, ranked 0.5 points lower than Christians, the largest preference in the study.

Weaker biases were found against refugees who were male, did not speak English and were unskilled.

Since the research was undertaken, Dr Platas said opinion polls indicated US views on refugees had hardened further along party lines, with anti-refugee sentiment becoming more entrenched among Republicans.

“There’s been polarisation in the attitudes towards refugees in general. We see this in the difference in policy between the presidents,” she said.

During his time in office, former president Barack Obama raised the cap on the number of refugees allowed to enter the US, while President Trump has lowered the figure.

In Obama’s last year as president, the limit on the number of refugees admitted to America was 110,000.

By comparison, it was announced in September that in the current US fiscal year, the limit would be 18,000 people, an all-time low for the country’s refugee programme, which began in 1980.

Dr Platas said she and her co-authors were continuing to survey the American public with respect to their views towards migrants.

With much recent rhetoric focused on asylum seekers coming primarily from Latin America, researchers are interested in whether these people are viewed differently to, for example, Syrian refugees.

An ultimate goal is to identify ways in which the public might be encouraged to develop empathy towards migrants.

“Divisive political rhetoric was certainly a motivation for the study,” said Dr Platas.

“What work in political science does show is that political elites can influence attitudes towards refugees.

“I’m interested in what’s driving that [polarisation], what’s underlying these beliefs and concerns about the issue and the consequences of these beliefs which, you could argue, translate into voter behaviour and policies which impact refugees.

“This has real consequences for thousands of refugees. It’s really just trying to understand why people hold the beliefs they do and what, if anything, can promote more inclusion towards these groups.””

HONG KONG (AP) — Riot police stormed several malls in Hong Kong on Sunday in a move to thwart more pro-democracy protests, as the city’s leader prepares for talks in Beijing on deepening economic integration between the semi-autonomous Chinese territory and mainland China.
    Full Coverage: Hong Kong

There were calls online urging protesters to gather in seven locations to sustain a push for political reform following a chaotic day of protests and clashes with police on Saturday, with the anti-government movement showing no signs of letting up after nearly five months.

Most of the rallies didn’t pan out Sunday as scores of riot police took positions, searching and arresting people, dispersing crowds and blocking access to a park next to the office of the city’s embattled leader, Carrie Lam.

Some small pockets of hardcore demonstrators were undeterred.

As protesters chanted slogans at the New Town Plaza shopping mall in Sha Tin, police said they moved in after some “masked rioters” with fire extinguishers vandalized turnstiles and smashed windows at the subway station linked to the mall.

In two malls in the New Territories in the north, protesters vandalized shops, threw paint and attacked an outlet of Japanese fast food chain Yoshinoya, which has been frequently targeted after its owner voiced support for the Hong Kong police.

  5. Downtown Hong Kong becomes a battlefield: Police fire tears gas at masked anti-government protesters who fight back with petrol bombs

Hong Kong police fired tear gas to break up a demonstration by thousands of masked anti-government protesters today as downtown Hong Kong turned into a battleground.

The protests happened in Victoria Park, a traditional venue for demonstrations and vigils, and the surrounding streets.

Police action was a fast response to a rally billed as an ’emergency call’ for autonomy for the former British colony that was promised its freedom when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

The fast-moving crowds headed to the park through the Causeway Bay shopping district, some pulling up metal fencing to build street barricades, their actions masked by others holding umbrellas. Activists also threw at least one petrol bomb.

Many sang the British and U.S. national anthems, waved multi-national flags and a were calling for independence, a red line for Communist Party leaders in Beijing who have vowed to crush any such move.

Police using megaphones warned them to disperse, saying they would be prosecuted for holding an illegal assembly on the 22nd straight weekend of protest.

Police also raised a black flag, warning of tear gas, with activists running in all directions around the park.

Anti-riot Police Tactical Unit vans were already in waiting on the narrow side-streets around the Central business district to the west, the protester’s destination for later in the afternoon.

  6. ‘Bulletproof’ China-backed site attacks HK democracy activists

Using Russia-based servers and promoted by powerful groups linked to China’s ruling Communist Party, a sophisticated anonymous website is targeting Hong Kong pro-democracy figures — and there is almost no way to stop it.

From high-profile activists to journalists and lawmakers, about 200 people seen as supporting Hong Kong’s protest movement have been “doxxed” — had their personal details posted online — by the site, HK Leaks, since it emerged in August.

“I received hundreds of threatening calls,” a female reporter at Apple Daily, a pro-democracy newspaper, told AFP.

“They would call me a bitch, and a prostitute, and tell me to watch out or they would kill me.”

Disclosing certain personal details, including phone numbers, without consent is illegal in Hong Kong.

Privacy Commissioner Stephen Wong said on September 17 he had ordered HK Leaks to take down all posts.

But the site remains online: on its front page, a photo of black-clad protesters with a Chinese-language banner saying: “We want to know who these people are and why they are messing up Hong Kong!”

  7. Upmarket Hong Kong shopping mall clash ends in bloodshed

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong anti-government protesters crowded an upmarket shopping mall in running clashes with police on Sunday, with several suffering bloody wounds a day after parts of the Chinese-ruled city became a battleground.

A human chain in Cityplaza, in the eastern suburb of Taikoo Shing, turned into a bloody face-to-face conflict with police, running up and down escalators where families with young children had been window shopping just minutes before and watching skating on the ice rink.

  8. Business records reveal Hunter Biden is still on board of Chinese equity firm
By LU Staff November 3, 2019

Business records accessed Friday show that Hunter Biden remains listed as a board member of a Chinese private equity firm, a position the son of former Vice President Joe Biden said he’d relinquish by the end of October.

Hunter Biden’s lawyer said he had resigned his seat on the board of BHR Partners. However, the lawyer did not provide the Daily Caller News Foundation any evidence of his departure.

Hunter Biden was listed as an active director of BHR Partners in the firm’s file on China’s National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System when accessed on Nov. 1 by the DCNF. The most recent change to the firm occurred on Sept. 18, according to BHR’s business records.

“Yes, Hunter has resigned from the board,” Hunter Biden’s lawyer, George Mesires, told the DCNF in a single-sentence statement Friday.

“The net profit of Saudi Arabia’s state oil company Saudi Aramco for the first nine months of this year amounted to $68 billion, revenue for the same period reached $244 billion, the company’s report indicated.

It may additionally pay interim dividends in the amount of $9.5 billion to the kingdom’s authorities only.

“The Company will declare an interim (ordinary) dividend of a maximum of $9.5 billion, after obtaining the necessary approvals from the Board, prior to the date of allocation of the Shares to the Institutional Subscribers and Individual Investors. These dividends will be paid to the Government (in its capacity as the sole shareholder in the Company) and investors in the Shares will not be entitled to any portion of these dividends regardless of when they are paid, which may be prior to, or after, the date of such allocation,” the report read.
The country’s Capital Markets Authority announced earlier in the day that they had agreed to approve Saudi Aramco’s request to partially place its shares; first on the local Tadawul stock market, and then abroad, placing a total of 5 percent of the company’s shares.

According to the Al Arabiya broadcaster, the start of collecting investors’ applications is expected on December 4, while the trading of shares will commence on December 11.

Saudi Aramco was pronounced the world’s most profitable company earlier this year which may give it record-breaking earnings upon going public. The company currently sits on the second largest proven oil reserve of about 266 million barrels.”

  11. Islamabad Rejects New Delhi’s Map Showing Pakistan-Administered Kashmir as Part of India (sputniknews, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/asia/201911031077213149-islamabad-rejects-new-delhis-map-showing-pakistan-administered-kashmir-as-part-of-india/

“A day after New Delhi issued the map, Islamabad dismissed it as “incorrect, legally untenable and void.”

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry has said that a new map showing the Pakistan-administered Kashmir as part of India was incompatible with the standing of the territory with the United Nations.

“We reiterate that no step by India can change the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir recognised by the United Nations. Such measures by the government of India cannot prejudice the inalienable right to self-determination of the people of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement issued by the foreign ministry reads.
Earlier on Saturday, the Indian home ministry released a notification related to the new boundaries of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The map displaying Jammu and Kashmir included Pakistan administered Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir within the territorial jurisdiction of India.

Pakistan once again reiterated its continuous support to “the legitimate struggle of the people of Indian (administered) Jammu and Kashmir for exercising their right to self-determination in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.”

The administrative status of the state changed after the Indian Parliament abrogated Article 370, which had provided special status to Kashmir. This prompted Pakistan to downgrade its diplomatic and trade relations with India.

Kashmir has been at the heart of a dispute between India and its western neighbour Pakistan since both countries gained freedom from British colonial rule in 1947. Both nations administer parts of Kashmir, while claiming the whole region as theirs.”

  12. Iranian Leader Warns Tehran Will Not Yield to US Pressure, Rules Out Talks With Washington – Reports (sputniknews, Nov 3, 2019)

“Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said the day before that US sanctions imposed on Iran would push the development of global terrorism in the future.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei ruled out on Sunday Tehran’s talks with Washington, adding that the Middle Eastern nation wouldn’t yield to the US pressure.

“One way to block America’s influence is to ban any talks with America. It means Iran will not yield to America’s pressure. Those who believe that negotiations with the enemy will solve our problems are 100% wrong,” Khamenei was quoted by state TV as saying.

Speaking further, Khamenei noted that French President Macron’s words that US-Iran talks would resolve problems show that the French president is either naive or is complicit with Washington.

Earlier this week, the Iranian supreme leader claimed that mass protests in the Middle East, namely in Iraq and Lebanon, were inspired by Washington and Arab states.”

  15. Govt to Redistribute 5,000 Migrants from Islands Across Mainland Greece (breitbart, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/11/03/redistribute-5000-migrants-greek-islands-across-mainland-greece/

“The transfer of migrants from overcrowded camps on the islands to the Greek mainland continued over the weekend, with authorities saying 415 arrived at the port of Eleusis west of Athens Saturday afternoon and another 380 expected around noon Sunday.
The migrants had been living on the island of Lesbos, at the Moria camp where almost 15,000 migrants still live in a space designed for 3,000. They were being transported by Greek Navy ships usually used to transport tanks.

A senior government official speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about certain aspects of government policy told The Associated Press that the government plans to move 5,000 migrants to the mainland over the next 15 days.

The official said the migrants will be housed in hotels, as the peak tourist season is over. He said some parts of the mainland, such as northern Greece, will be exempted because there are many migrant camps, or hotspots, there already.

He added that the government would cap the number of migrants at 0.8 percent of the local population per prefecture. He did not mention whether more permanent locations would be used in the future.

Greece is divided into 54 prefectures, but about half of them would be exempted from the migrant resettlement scheme, including all islands.

Several of Greece’s eastern islands, all close to the Turkish coast, as well as the land border with Turkey in the northeast, are migrants’ preferred entry points.

The large presence of migrants on those islands — about 35,000 in all — has aroused the hostility of parts of the local population. Local authorities complain the islands are turning into dumping grounds for migrants while the processing of asylum requests is very slow and expulsions of those deemed ineligible for asylum very few. The government has promised to speed up both processes.

Early Saturday, inhabitants of the eastern island of Kos, led by their mayor, prevented 75 migrants from disembarking from a regularly scheduled passenger ship that had picked them up from the remote island of Kastellorizo.

The municipality had blocked the landing with tractors and other vehicles. The mayor said that the government should transfer some of the 4,500 migrants already on the island instead of sending new ones.”

  16. Migrant Gang Boss Claims Asylum in Germany Weeks After Being Deported (breitbart, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/11/03/migrant-gang-boss-claims-asylum-weeks-being-deported-germany/

“Organised crime migrant clan boss Ibrahim Miri has claimed asylum in Germany after coming back into the country illegally only 15 weeks after authorities deported him.

The 46-year-old, who is allegedly the boss of a 3,000-member organised clan and head of the motorcycle gang known as the Mongols, had his home raided at 3:40 am in the morning in Bremen on July 10th before being deported to Lebanon by jet, German tabloid Bild reports.

Earlier this week, Miri arrived back in Germany, allegedly illegally by land crossing, and visited the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in Bremen to claim asylum status. Police arrested him immediately afterwards.

According to Bild, Miri is seeking asylum in Germany after being threatened in Lebanon. He also wants to look into taking legal action against his prior deportation from Germany.

Paul Ziemiak, General Secretary of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), commented on the return of the gang leader saying: “It makes me angry that a criminal clan boss tries to ridicule our rule of law. The Bremen Senator for Justice must now urgently ensure that Ibrahim Miri is deported again.”.

“The authorities must clarify how, despite entry restriction, a criminal deported to Beirut can, only a short time later, appear again in Bremen,” he added.

Miri’s gang operates in Bremen, Berlin, and Essen, and is associated with drugs, prostitution, trafficking, and weapons. He faces up to three years in prison for illegally entering Germany.

Germany has faced problems with migrant clans, primarily made up of Middle Eastern migrants and those from migrant backgrounds, for years. Earlier this year, German Islamic and migration researcher Ralph Ghadban blamed the ideology of multiculturalism for their rise in power.

Mr Ghadban went as far as to claim that the gangs had turned areas of Berlin into no-zo zones. “No-go areas are a law-free area. Policemen are persecuted, besieged, and harassed. Policewomen are groped. They receive threats from clan members such as ‘we know where you live’ or ‘we know where your children go to school’, but they are usually empty threats,” he said.

Thomas Spaniel, an organised crime specialist with Berlin’s police force, said last year that the clans were also recruiting asylum seekers and other migrants. “The clans have systematically been recruiting refugees for the dirtiest jobs, such as selling drugs in parks and the subway,” Mr Spaniel said.”

  17. France: Two Schools Set on Fire and Police Attacked as Mobs of 20 to 30 Riot (breitbart, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/11/03/france-two-schools-set-fire-police-attacked-mobs-riot/

“On Halloween night, mobs set fires to two schools in the French city of Béziers, causing significant damage. The perpetrators also attacked police and responding firefighters.

The night’s incidents started at around 9:30 pm on Thursday when several fires were reported in a derelict building near Vallerey Square and other fires at an abandoned garage in the Devèze district of Béziers, broadcaster BFMTV reports.

Once police arrived on the scene, a group of people attacked them with firecrackers and rocks. But with the protection of the police, firefighters were able to get the first fires under control.

An hour later, at around 10:30 pm, a fire was reported at the Maurice Et Katia Krafft middle school. When police and firefighters arrived on the scene, they were again attacked by a group of up to 30 people armed with rocks, fireworks, and other projectiles. Police say the attackers had covered their faces to avoid identification.

After police reinforcements arrived, firefighters were able to tackle the blaze. A source told BMFTV that the main damage included “broken windows” and that “a fire was started in the gym and two adjoining rooms”.

However, more considerable damage was caused to the nearby Tamaris primary school, some three minutes’ walk away. “The Tamaris school was severely damaged by fire. Several rooms and classrooms are completely destroyed,” says the source. “The fumes spread in almost the entire establishment, resulting in all the classrooms becoming blackened from smoke.”

Between around 10:30 pm and 11:00 pm, police said that a gang of around 20 people wearing “Halloween-type masks” disturbed traffic at the Pierre Verdier roundabout in another part of the city. The attackers deposited “a moped as well as garbage containers” on the road. They then “set [the garbage bins] on fire while throwing stones at vehicles as they passed by”, according to the source.

Calm only returned to the area at 12:30 am after police reinforcements arrived. No arrests were made during the night, though earlier on Thursday evening, police detained a 15-year-old male for throwing stones at officers near one of the schools that were later set on fire. One firefighter was injured during the night’s activities.

“In total, three cars, a moped and several garbage containers were burned in the night in different districts of Béziers,” the source told the broadcaster.

Robert Ménard, the firebrand mayor of Béziers, commented on the violence saying: “A minority rots the lives of people in the neighbourhood. We must punish them harshly and not just be satisfied with words.”

He also gave more details on the damage to the primary school, saying it would likely need to be rebuilt.

French Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer also gave a statement condemning the arson attack. Interior Minister Christoph Castaner said: “Arson of a school is an offence to the Republic. Along with Jean-Michel Blanquer, I condemn these unacceptable acts. They can not go unpunished: everything will be done so that their authors respond to justice.”

The incident is not the first time police and firefighters have had to deal with guerilla-like tactics employed by individuals in troubled areas of French cities. Last year, in the city of Mulhouse, a group of around 50 youths clashed with police for several hours, attacking officers with rocks and iron bars.”

  18. Expert: Swedish Bombings Not Matched by Any Industrialised Country (breitbart, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/11/03/expert-swedish-bombings-not-matched-any-industrialised-country/

“An analyst at Sweden’s National Bomb Guard has claimed that the growing explosion and bombing phenomenon in the country is not matched by any other industrialised nation.

Analyst Ylva Ehrlin said that between January and October, the southern region of Sweden had seen 71 separate explosions, more than double the number from the previous year’s 34 incidents, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

“We have ten million people in Sweden, but I have not found any equivalent of this level of explosions in any industrialised country,” Ehrlin told the broadcaster.

“What is dangerous is that the user of the explosives probably does not possess the knowledge of how dangerous they are and how sensitive the substances are,” she added.

The comments come in the wake of the latest explosion to rock the country in the city of Helsingborg during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police say that two explosions occurred, with police officer Henrik Hagström stating: “At 3:30 am we received several calls about a strong detonation in Helsingborg, and shortly thereafter we received calls about another explosion. We have confirmed explosions in two locations outdoors at two properties.”

No one was injured in the explosions, but damages to the two buildings did occur with windows being blasted out and broken. Investigators say that they do not currently believe the two incidents are linked.

Helsingborg was also the location for one of the worst explosions in recent years when a police station in the city was attacked in 2017.

The resulting explosion caused widespread damage to the facade of the police station and attracted national attention. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven stated at the time: “The bombing of a police station in Helsingborg is extremely serious. An attack on the police is, in the long run, an attack on our democracy.”

Across Sweden, bombings and explosions have seen a significant increase. A report released in August by newspaper Dagens Nyheter claiming that the number had increased by 45 per cent nationally from the same period in 2018.”

  20. Calligrapher hopes to break record for world’s longest handwritten koran

Calligrapher M Dileef showcased the first part of what he hopes will be the world’s longest handwritten koran at the Sharjah International Book Fair in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

The current 300-metre-long (985ft) koran roll is supposed be 1km (0.6 miles) in length when finished.

M Dileef explained that he works 12 hours per day for his attempt at breaking the world record.

He plans on exhibiting his scroll in other countries as well, including in the UK and Turkey.

The current record is reported to be held by Egyptian artist Saad Mohammad with a 700-metre long koran.

  21. Germany: Several cars smashed as police clash with Berlin squatters

Several cars were damaged and police were pelted with flares and stones as they clashed with squatters and protesters supporting them in Berlin on Saturday.

Footage shows police gathered outside squatted building in Berlin’s Friedrichshain neighbourhood. Several damaged vehicles can be seen outside, as squatters stand on their balconies with flares and fireworks.

According to reports, police were hit with stones, and one of the damaged vehicles belongs to a family from France who were visiting Berlin. The demonstrations were reportedly motivated by threats to evict squatters from several locations in the German capital.

  22. France: Yellow Vests out in force as first anniversary nears

Hundreds of Yellow Vest protesters took to the Paris streets on Saturday, marking the 51st week since the weekly rallies began in November 2018.

Demonstrators departed from the Place d’Italie and marched to the Gare du Nord station, followed by large amounts of police.

Activists attempted to occupy the railway station but were dispersed by riot police.

Explaining why the protest movement had lasted so long, demonstrator Moun named the French president’s handling of the issue: ” I think that it is especially his [Macron’s] contempt, his arrogance which made him lose the most and which keeps everybody still angry and rallying.”

The Yellow Vest protests, which will hit the one-year mark on November 17, were initially sparked by a fuel rise. The movement quickly spread throughout France and evolved into a general expression of dissatisfaction with the status quo.

  23. Iran Unveils New Murals Featuring Gun-Toting Mickey Mouse, McDonald’s French Fry Missiles – Photos (sputniknews, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201911031077214613-iran-unveils-new-murals-featuring-gun-toting-mickey-mouse-mcdonalds-french-fry-missiles–photos/

“The walls surrounding the former US Embassy in Iran have featured a series of anti-American murals for many years, becoming a major tourist attraction, as well as a reminder of the continued tensions between the two countries since the 1979 Revolution, when Iranians overthrew the US-backed Shah installed by the CIA in 1953.

Sixteen new murals have been unveiled at the former US Embassy in Tehran ahead of the 40th anniversary of the compound’s November 4, 1979 takeover.

The images, painted in the colours of the American flag, feature a series of well-known American cultural products, corporations, weapons systems, and various historical events.

The murals include an angry Mickey Mouse armed with a handgun on a “1$” US stamp, a box of McDonald’s french fries with missiles flying out, a modified great seal featuring the American bald eagle holding bullets in one hand and drugs in the other with a Star of David over its head, a tattered and broken Statue of Liberty, a flaccid Dirty Harry-style revolver, and more.

Among the murals is a painting dedicated to the June 2019 incident in which Iran destroyed a $220 million US spy drone. Another image shows an Iranian player’s goal against the US at the 1998 World Cup. Yet another is dedicated to the July 3, 1988 shootdown of an Iranian passenger jet by US forces in the Persian Gulf, which claimed 290 lives.

The murals were revealed at a ceremony attended by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, who provocatively stepped over an American flag laid out on the ground while attending the ceremony.

In a televised address, Salami blasted the US over its efforts to stop Iran from pursuing a peaceful nuclear energy programme, recalling that the US possesses a vast arsenal of nuclear weapons and is the only country in the world to have actually used nuclear weapons. He also accused the US of hypocrisy with its claim to supporting democracy and human rights, claiming that Washington has given support to “all dictators” around the world. According to the commander, “America is no longer the first in anything,” and adversaries can now easily “unbalance its system with the least amount of force applied.”

According to Iranian media, the murals’ overall themes included the concepts of ‘The decline of America and the West’ and “America’s crimes around the world and Iran.”

    40 Years of Tensions
The November 4, 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran took place during the course of the Iranian Revolution, and saw a group of university students take over the US compound, dubbed the “den of spies,” leading to a hostage crisis in which 52 American diplomats were held for 444 days. The hostage crisis and the failure of the April 1980 rescue mission was a major blow to then-US President Jimmy Carter, and one of the contributing factors to his defeat by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election. The two countries have had frosty relations ever since.

A brief thaw in tensions began in 2015 with the signing of the Iran nuclear deal, which promised Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for a commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons. Hopes for relations improving further were dashed in 2018, when the Trump administration unilaterally scrapped the deal and reinstated tough banking and energy restrictions against the Islamic Republic, and threatened to apply secondary sanctions against any country buying Iranian energy. In May 2019, the US sent a carrier strike group to the Middle East, citing a vague ‘Iranian threat’. Shortly after, the region was hit by a series of dangerous escalations, including mysterious tanker sabotage attacks, the seizure of commercial vessels, and drone shootdowns. After each incident, both sides threatened one another with deadly consequences in the event of war, but have so far managed to avoid direct military confrontation.”

  24. BREITBART – UK – Labour’s Vaz Suspended from Commons over ‘Coke and Rent Boys’ Scandal

MPs have approved the recommendation from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards to suspend Labour’s Keith Vaz from the House of Commons following an inquiry into his “coke and rent boys” scandal.

The left-wing Sunday Mirror exposed in 2016 that married Vaz had exploited male migrant prostitutes and that he had “jokingly” describing himself as a “pimp” in an audio recording.

At the time the scandal broke, the Labour MP, previously Minister for Europe in Tony Blair’s government, was a member of Parliament’s Home Affairs Select Committee and leading an investigation into illegal drugs.

He stepped down from the Home Affairs committee once his interactions with the prostitutes, which included references to abusing cocaine and “poppers”, were made public.

But he was, within a matter of weeks, elected to the Justice Committee in a move Tory parliamentarian Andrew Bridgen branded at the time as an “utter disgrace”.

A previous Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards investigation into Vaz was suspended after claims he was “too ill” to face it. However, he continued to serve as an MP. He also made several international visits to countries including India and Saudi Arabia, leading to widespread allegations of a cover-up.

Mr Bridgen observed at the time that Vaz was “the most healthy-looking ‘ill’ person I’ve ever seen” and pointed out: “At the end of the day, if he’s unfit to be held to the standards of an MP then he’s not fit to be an MP.”

The Standards investigation was finally resumed in mid-2018, thanks in no small part to Bridgen’s efforts to keep the scandal in the public eye by raising it with then-Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow — a close personal friend of Vaz.

The resulting report finally concluded with a recommendation that Vaz be suspended from the House of Commons for six months for his “apparent willingness to purchase controlled drugs for others to use”, “disregard for the law”, and “conduct… disrespectful of the House’s system of standards”. MPs voted in favour of the suspension on October 31st.

Then-Speaker Bercow, on his final day in the chair, clashed with Andrew Bridgen over the report ahead of the vote in favour of Vaz’s suspension. Bercow berated the Tory MP for being “nasty” and making “ad hominem” attacks on the Labour MP and furiously denied allegations that he was “defending the indefensible” with respect to his friend’s conduct to the “fag end” (the ‘very end’) of his speakership.

Despite Bercow’s defensive claims that he did not provide any cover for Vaz and behaved entirely properly throughout the years-long debacle, he has previously been accused of using his powers to protect his friend. The accusation came from no less than the publicly-funded British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) — widely regarded as a left-leaning institution and, as a rule, far from hostile to establishment Europhiles like Bercow and Vaz.

In an article titled ‘How John Bercow keeps Keith Vaz’s secrets’, then-BBC policy editor Chris Cook described Bercow’s dubious invocation of 17th-century rights of “parliamentary privilege” to block the release of documents pertaining to allegations that Vaz was bullying clerks on taxpayer-funded committee trips.

Bercow — who has faced bullying allegations throughout his tenure but escaped any real sanction due to what officials have described as an “establishment stitch-up” — had “personally intervened and gone out of his way to bar [BBC] Newsnight from asking the Information Commissioner or a judge” to release the Vaz documents under the Freedom of Information Act, according to Cook.

“The net result is that the Speaker, who denies bullying, has made an order to hide information about the behaviour of his close personal friend, Keith Vaz, a man who also denies bullying – supposedly to protect MPs’ freedom of speech,” Cook explained.

“[Bercow] then [went] out of his way to use a personal veto to make sure no-one could even consider reviewing that questionable decision.

“You can understand why staff are so suspicious about whether MPs will ever let themselves be judged by outsiders when it comes to bullying and harassment.”

  25. French police fight running battles with youths in Paris suburb

French police fought running battles Saturday night in a poor suburb northwest of Paris with groups of young men who burnt a circus school and wounded two officers, the authorities said Sunday.

The trouble, which is said to be related to the pending demolition of a building block in the disadvantaged neighbourhood of Noe, started with youngsters throwing Molotov cocktails in the evening, according to a police source.

When officers arrived, they were attacked with projectiles and targeted with fireworks.

At the height of the confrontation, police were facing off with a group of about 30 men, said the source.

Two police members sustained light injuries. In the foray, the troublemakers burnt a circus tent, which its operator said had cost about 800,000 euros ($894,000) and where children from deprived backgrounds were being trained in the circus arts. Two suspects were arrested.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner described the acts on Twitter as “cowardly and foolish”, and said he was confident the police would identify and catch those who got away.

Mayor Catherine Arenou said the suburb had been caught for days in the grip of criminal acts by youngsters in the Noe neighbourhood who keep smashing the street lights.

The mayor said a youth information centre in the neighbourhood was also targeted on Saturday night, with petrol found inside and traces of an attempted fire.

A police source said the violence had been sparked by the planned demolition of an apartment building which “threatens the underground economy” run by criminal gangs in the neighbourhood.

The planned demolition is part of an urban reconstruction programme, according to the mayor.

In April last year, a nursery school in the Noe neighbourhood was set ablaze, prompting local authorities to raise concerns about the plight of Paris’ needier suburbs.

A report in June said rising property prices had widened the gap between rich and poor in the Paris region, where the number of people living in poverty has increased.

The Ile de France, with Paris at its centre, accounts for 30 percent of the national economy and is also home to the biggest immigrant population.

Average income fell while unemployment and the foreign-born population grew in 44 areas, mostly far-flung suburbs encircling the French capital, from 2001 to 2015.

The highly qualified and managerial classes mainly occupy central Paris and its wealthy western suburbs.

  28. Italy: Far-Leftists Arrested for Breaking into Public Housing, Illegally Giving It to Migrants (breitbart, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/11/03/italian-far-leftists-arrested-illegally-giving-migrants-public-apartments/

“Police have arrested five members of a far-left extremist group in Milan after they broke into vacant public housing and illegally gave it away to migrants.

The five individuals, three Italian nationals, a Romanian, and an Angolan, are members of the far-left Autonomous Committee of Ambitanti Barona (CAAB). CAAB claims to fight against evictions and for the right to housing, Il Giornale reports.

Police allege that the group broke into uninhabited publically-owned apartments and then illegally assigned them to migrants. The new occupants pay the group between €700 and €1,400 in what investigators have labelled as bribes.

The migrants, who mostly come from non-European Union states, were also expected to take part in demonstrations against evictions and were often at the front of protests in which the group clashed with Milan police.

Investigators were tipped off to the group’s activities by a 43-year-old Moroccan migrant who had become disillusioned with CAAB’s activities and stopped showing up to demonstrations and meetings.

Eventually, the migrant was called on by members of CAAB to explain his absence and lack of communication. He was then allegedly physically attacked until another man, a 32-year-old, defended him.

CAAB responded to the arrests, calling them a “political attack” and claimed that the Moroccan started the physical altercation.

“As the Barona Autonomous Committee, we reject every single accusation and send it back to the sender: occupying houses for money is a mafia practice, which speculates on people’s problems, and we fight it every day,” the statement said.

Public housing for migrants has been a significant issue in many Italian cities, including in Sesto San Giovanni. Earlier this year, the city’s right-wing Mayor Roberto Di Stefano reversed a leftist policy of giving migrants priority for housing over local Italians.”

  29. Democrats Want to Create Federal Bureaucracy to Welcome Immigrants, Refugees at Expense of U.S. Citizens (breitbart, Nov 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/11/03/democrats-want-create-federal-bureaucracy-welcome-immigrants-refugees-expense-u-s-citizens/

“Democrats joined with immigrants and refugee rights activists at the Capitol last week to introduce a bill that would create a federal bureaucracy for the express purpose of bringing more people into the United States and helping to resettle them.

The New Deal for New Americans Act would “establish a National Office of New Americans in the Executive Office of the White House to promote and support immigrant and refugee integration and inclusion and coordinate efforts of federal, state, and local governments to support social, economic, and civic integration of immigrants and refugees.”

The bill if it becomes law would “ban deportations based on public charge determinations, and increase federally funded immigration services like English classes and workforce training,” Fortune magazine reported.

Further, Democrats and activists want to raise the cap for refugees from the Trump administration current limit of 18,000 annually to 110,000 and freeze immigration application fees — also reversing a Trump administration increase in cost to come into the United States to benefit the U.S. economy and its citizens.

At a press conference to introduce the legislation, Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY), one of the sponsors of the bill, did not say how the influx of people who impact Americans in the jobs market.

Meng also said she and other Democrats behind the bill – Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (D-Ill) – were still waiting from a score from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on how much it would cost American taxpayers.

The issue of immigrants who are here illegally or how to stop the flow of illegal immigration into the country was not addressed at the press conference.

“This is a critical bill at a critical time,” Jayapal said. “This is about who is here and how we make sure they get what they truly need.”

“Trump is closing the doors on people who have the right to be here,” Garcia said. “We as a country are better than that.”

“The treatment immigrants currently receive is not representative of our values,” Garcia said.

Eva Millona, director of the Massachusetts Immigration and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, repeated the popular talking point on the left about the need for more foreign workers.

“This bill is extremely important,” Millona said. “As the native born population ages, immigrant workers will be crucial to our economy.”

“It is quite simple,” Millona said. “America needs immigrant workers.”

But as Breitbart News reported earlier this year foreign workers have now outpaced American workers in terms of job growth for at least half a year, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data reveals:

While native-born Americans did not increase their labor participation rate at all year-to-year, foreign-born workers saw a 1.22 percent increase in their labor participation rate. Likewise, the number of foreign-born workers in the civilian labor force increased more than five times the number of new native-born American workers who are now in the labor force.

A report from the Center for Immigration Studies using federal data shows that mass immigration encourages discrimination against American workers.

“You really have to be out of touch with reality to argue that there are no negative effects of immigration on native workers,” said Jason Richwine, a statistician who studied the issue for the Center for Immigration Studies.

Some of the other features of the bill include:

Amend the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to no longer allow deportation of an individual deemed to have become a public charge.
Establish a Federal Initiative on New Americans to coordinate a federal response to address issues that affect the lives of new immigrants and refugees, and communities with growing immigrant and refugee populations.
Create a Workforce Development Grant Program to ensure that immigrant and refugee adults have equitable access to education and workforce programs that help equip them with occupational skills needed to secure or advance in employment.
Promote civic engagement through automatic voter registration of newly naturalized individuals.

Expand family integration by reducing the age of citizens who are able to petition eligible family members from 21 years old to 18 years old.”

  30. Turkey: Arming Genocide of Christians in Nigeria?

    by Raymond Ibrahim
    November 3, 2019 at 5:00 am

Concerning Turkey’s increasingly suspect role in supporting jihadists — most recently, ISIS’s slain leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was found hiding in Syria’s “last refuge” for jihadi rebels, just three miles from Turkey’s border — one of the least mentioned is Turkey’s apparent alliance with the “other” ISIS, that in Nigeria, Boko Haram.

TURKEY’S authoritarian President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered the deadly 2014 jihadist attack on Kobane in northern Syria, a senior Isis commander alleged today.

Taha Abdurrahim Abdullah, a close confidant of Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi – who died earlier this week – was captured by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces militia alliance in March this year.

He told his captors Mr Erdogan had insisted that Isis attack the largely Kurdish border town in northern Syria in September 2014, despite the jihadists’ reluctance.

“We [Isis] were preparing war, but our goal was to move to Damascus, not Kobane,” he claimed under interrogation.

“[Former Isis leader] Baghdadi wanted Kobane to be attacked. We objected to this situation. But he refused. We suffered heavy losses in Kobane.

“Later, we learned that the reason why Bagdadi turned our direction to Kobane overnight was the insistence of the Turks. The Turks wanted to attack Kobane. Erdogan insisted,” Mr Abdullah alleged.…

“Iran remains a top state sponsor of terrorism, said the United States Department of State on Friday.

In its annual terrorism report for 2018, it said the Iranian regime has spent “nearly one billion dollars per year to support terrorist groups that serve as its proxies and expand its malign influence across the globe.”

Tehran has funded international terrorist groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Palestinian territories and other groups.

It also has engaged in its own terrorist plotting around the world, particularly in Europe, charged the report. In January 2018, German authorities investigated 10 suspected Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force operatives. In the summer, authorities in Belgium, France, and Germany thwarted an Iranian plot to bomb a political rally near Paris, France. In October, an Iranian operative was arrested for planning an assassination in Denmark, and in December, Albania expelled two Iranian officials for plotting terrorist attacks.

Furthermore, Tehran continued to allow an al-Qaeda facilitation network to operate in Iran, which sends fighters and money to conflict zones in Afghanistan and Syria, and it has extended sanctuary to al-Qaeda members residing in the country, said the report.

“Al-Qaeda and its regional affiliates remain resilient and pose an enduring threat to the United States, our allies and partners, and our interests around the world,” it continued. “Given ISIS’s setbacks, al-Qaeda aims to reestablish itself as the vanguard” of the global extremist movement.

“Despite our sustained efforts since September 11, 2001, and the group’s leadership losses, al-Qaeda’s regional affiliates continue to expand their ranks, plot, and carry out attacks, as well as raise funds and inspire new recruits through social media and virtual technologies,” it added.

“Regionally focused terrorist groups also remained a threat in 2018. For example, Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba – which was responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks – and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) maintained the capability and intent to attack Indian and Afghan targets,” it said.

The report also warned that the global presence of ISIS continued to advance in 2018 through networks and affiliates even though the Trump administration declared it defeated the terror group in Syria and killed its leader last month in a US raid.

War-hardened fighters from groups such as ISIS returning to their home countries began raising fresh threats, the report said.

“Even as ISIS lost almost all its physical territory, the group proved its ability to adapt, especially through its efforts to inspire or direct followers online,” said Nathan Sales, the US counter-terrorism coordinator, whose office produced the congressionally mandated report.

“Additionally, battle-hardened terrorists headed home from the war zone in Syria and Iraq or traveled to third countries, posing new dangers,” he said.

The report also noted that terrorist tactics and use of technologies evolved throughout 2018. It cited the increased use of commercially available drones and encrypted communications, as well as low-tech vehicle and knife attacks. These presented additional challenges for the international counter-terrorism community.

“In October, the White House released the National Strategy for Counter-terrorism, the United States’ first counter-terrorism strategy since 2011. The strategy emphasizes the need to counter the full spectrum of terrorist threats we face, including ISIS, al-Qaeda, and Iran-backed groups, as well as regional terrorist organizations.

“It also highlights the need for a whole-of-government approach to counter-terrorism – one that relies on both civilian and military tools to address near- and long-term terrorist threats. Our strategy places a premium on dismantling terrorist organizations using a wide range of diplomatic, law enforcement, military, intelligence, financial and other tools.

“It also calls on our foreign partners to assume a greater share of the burden. In 2018, the United States used this whole-of-government approach to mobilize international responses to counter the most dangerous transnational terrorist organizations,” stressed the report.

Restricting terrorist travel remained a top priority. The United States played a leading role in helping states implement key measures in UN Security Council Resolution 2396 aimed at countering terrorist travel, including border security and information sharing measures.

The United States signed three new arrangements to share terrorist watchlists under Homeland Security Presidential Directive 6, bringing the total number of partner countries to 72. The Personal Identification Secure Comparison and Evaluation System (PISCES) border security platform grew to include 227 ports of entry in 23 countries, and partners use it to screen more than 300,000 travelers each day.

In December, the United States launched an initiative at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to adopt a standard for passenger name record data – a key screening tool that the United States has used for decades and that UN Security Council Resolution 2396 made mandatory for all UN members – by the end of 2019.”

  39. 2 Saudi soldiers killed near Yemen border

“Two Saudi soldiers were killed near border with war-torn Yemen, the official SPA news agency reported on Saturday.

SPA did not provide details about the time and circumstances of the deaths, saying only that the two soldiers “were martyred in the defense of religion and homeland” in the southern Jizan region.

Saudi Arabia is leading a Sunni coalition that launched a massive air campaign in 2015 against Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, who overran much of Yemen a year earlier.

Tens of thousands of Yemenis are believed to have been killed in the conflict, while another 14 million are at risk of starvation, according to the UN.”
