Here’s the latest in each of the country’s affected by unrest

Protests have broken out in several countries across the world, with citizens unhappy for different reasons. Some are protesting over economic conditions, others are protesting over tax hikes and elsewhere protests are breaking out over controversial laws or prison sentences imposed by governments.
Here’s the latest in each of the country’s affected by violent clashes and unrest.
Chile
Chile’s president declared a state of emergency in Santiago on Friday night and gave the military responsibility for security after a day of violent protests over increases in the price of metro tickets.
“I have declared a state of emergency and, to that end, I have appointed Major General Javier Iturriaga del Campo as head of national defense, in accordance with the provisions of our state of emergency legislation,” President Sebastian Pinera said.
Throughout Friday, protesters clashed with riot police in several parts of the city and the subway system was shut after attacks on several stations.

Violent clashes escalated as night fell, and the ENEL power company building and a Banco Chile branch, both in the city center, were set on fire and several metro stations hit with Molotov cocktails.
The unrest started as a fare-dodging protest against the hike in metro ticket prices, which increased from 800 to 830 peso ($1.17) for peak hour travel, following a 20 peso rise in January.
Attacks on metro stations forced the closure of the entire subway system, which is the key form of public transport in the congested and polluted capital, carrying three million passengers a day.
“The entire network is closed due to riots and destruction that prevent the minimum security conditions for passengers and workers,” the metro operator said on Twitter, after attacks against nearly all the 164 stations where many gates and turnstiles were destroyed.
The Santiago Metro, at 140 kilometres (90 miles) the largest and most modern in South America, is expected to remain closed this weekend and could reopen gradually next week.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam took to the airwaves on Saturday to back the use of force by police ahead of a major anti-government march planned this weekend in the Chinese-ruled city, which has been battered by months of violent protests.
Following a week of relative calm, Sunday’s march will test the strength of the pro-democracy movement. Campaigners vowed it would go ahead despite police ruling the rally illegal.
In the past, thousands of people have defied police and staged mass rallies without permission, often peaceful at the start but becoming violent at night.
The trigger for unrest in Hong Kong had been a now-withdrawn proposal to allow extradition to mainland China, as well as Taiwan and Macau. The case of a Hong Kong man accused of murdering his girlfriend in Taiwan before fleeing back to the city was held up as an example of why it was needed.
Late on Friday the man, Chan Tong-kai, who is jailed in Hong Kong for money laundering, wrote to Lam saying he would “surrender himself to Taiwan” over his alleged involvement in the case upon his release, which could be as soon as next week.
Ms Lam said in an interview on Saturday with broadcaster RTHK that it was a relief as it could bring an end to the case.
She also said that police had used appropriate force in handling the protests, and were responding to protesters’ violence, amid criticism of heavy-handed tactics.
More than 2,600 people have been arrested since the protests escalated in June.
Protesters’ demands have, since then, swelled far beyond opposing the extradition bill, to take in broader concerns that Beijing is eroding freedoms granted when Britain handed the city back to China in 1997.
China denies the accusation and has blamed foreign nations such as the United States and Britain for inciting the unrest.
The crisis in the Chinese-ruled city is the worst since the handover and poses the biggest popular challenge to China’s President Xi Jinping since he took power.

Security forces fired tear gas and chased down protesters in Beirut on Friday after tens of thousands of people across Lebanon marched to demand the demise of a political elite they accuse of looting the economy to the point of collapse.
Riot police in vehicles and on foot rounded up protesters, according to Reuters witnesses. They fired rubber bullets and tear gas canisters, dispersing demonstrators in Beirut’s commercial district. Dozens of people were wounded and detained.
Prime Minister Saad Al Hariri blamed his partners in government for obstructing reforms that could ward off economic crisis and gave them a 72-hour deadline to stop blocking him, otherwise hinting he may resign.
Mr Hariri, addressing protesters, said Lebanon was going through an “unprecedented, difficult time”.
Lebanese from all sects and walks of life have come out on to the streets, waving banners and chanting slogans urging Mr Hariri’s government to go.
The rallies follow warnings by economists and investors that Lebanon’s economy and graft-riddled financial system are closer to the brink than at any time since the war-torn 1980s.
“There are those who have placed obstacles in front of me … and in the face of all the efforts that I have proposed for reform,” Mr Hariri said, without naming names.
“Whatever the solution, we no longer have time and I am personally giving myself only a little time. Either our partners in government and in the nation give a frank response to the solution, or I will have another say,” he said.
“The deadline left is very short. It’s 72 hours.”
Protesters poured through villages and towns as well as the capital Beirut for a second day. No political leader, Muslim or Christian, was spared their wrath.
Their chants called for leaders including Mr Hariri, President Michel Aoun, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to step down.

Violent clashes escalated in Barcelona late on Friday, as radical Catalan separatists hurled rocks and fireworks at police, who responded with teargas and rubber bullets, turning the city centre into a chaotic battleground.
The deterioration came on the fifth consecutive day of protests in the Catalan capital and elsewhere over a Spanish court’s jailing of nine separatist leaders on sedition charges over a failed independence bid two years ago.
Around half a million people rallied in Barcelona earlier on Friday, police said, in the biggest gathering since Monday’s court ruling as separatists also called a general strike in the major tourist destination.
But while most marchers appeared peaceful, hordes of young protesters went on the rampage near the police headquarters, igniting a huge blaze that sent plumes of black smoke into the air, as police fired teargas to disperse them, an AFP correspondent said.
Other fires raged near Plaza de Catalunya at the top of the tourist hotspot Las Ramblas, where hundreds of demonstrators rallied in defiance of the police, who tried to disperse them with water cannon.
“Anti-fascist Catalonia!” they roared. “The streets will always be ours!”
Scores of police vans could be seen fanning out around the streets, their sirens screaming as the regional police warned people in a message in English on Twitter “not to approach” the city centre.
The situation later appeared calmer, according to a police spokesman.
Earlier, many thousands of “freedom marchers”, who had set out to walk from five regional towns on Wednesday, arrived in Barcelona wearing walking boots and carrying hiking poles.
The rally coincided with the general strike, prompting the cancellation of 57 flights, the closure of shops, business and several top tourist attractions, and slowing public transport to a trickle in a region that accounts for about a fifth of Spain’s economic output.
Activists also cut off Catalonia’s main cross-border highway with France.

Three dead in Chile protest violence
Santiago (AFP) – Three people died in a fire in a supermarket being ransacked in the Chilean capital early Sunday, as protests sparked by anger over social and economic conditions rocked one of Latin America’s most stable countries.
Santiago’s Mayor Karla Rubilar told reporters two people burned to death in the blaze and another later died in hospital, after the huge store controlled by US retail chain Walmart was looted.
They were the first deaths in two days of violent unrest in which protesters have set buses on fire, burned metro stations and clashed with riot police in the city of seven million — despite a curfew imposed overnight until 07:00 Sunday.
Soldiers were deployed in the streets for the first time since Chile returned to democracy in 1990, following the rightwing Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.
The protests were triggered by an unpopular hike in metro fares, which President Sebastian Pinera announced Saturday he was suspending.

Another adds: ‘Just a few hours and we’ll show you the (decapitated) heads.’
A third then quips: ‘Victory only comes from God! With beheading.’
Another, more graphic video was also posted, showing summary executions believed to be on the M4 highway, an east-west road further inside Syria.
The head spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces posted the footage, saying: ‘Turkish-backed armed groups threaten to behead any “infidel Kurd” they capture on their way to NE Syria.
‘To all those who are worried that ISIS may come back. ISIS is already back to NE Syria with Turkish protection.’
Yesterday SDF commander Abdi accused Turkey of sabotaging the truce by blocking the withdrawal of his forces from flashpoint border town Ras al-Ain.
The Turkish defence ministry said Sunday that Kurdish forces carried out 20 attacks.
‘Despite all the hostile acts in violation of the agreement, a convoy of 39 vehicles, mostly ambulances, safely entered and exited Ras al-Ain on Saturday’ to help evacuate the wounded, the ministry said.
Turkish presidency spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said Ankara abided by the agreement and urged the US to use its leverage to ensure Syrian Kurdish forces’ pullout.
‘We are committed to this agreement: Within five days they are supposed to leave and we have told our American colleagues to use their leverage, their connections to make sure that they leave without any incidents,’ he said in Istanbul yesterday.

Syrian Democratic Forces are now asking the United States to pressure Turkey to allow the safe passage of civilians out of the 120-kilometre-long area of border.
Yesterday a senior Syrian Kurdish official said his forces would pull back from a border area in accordance with the US brokered deal when Turkey allows the evacuation of its remaining fighters and civilians from a besieged town there.
Redur Khalil, a senior Syrian Democratic Forces official, said the plan for evacuation from the town of Ras al-Ayn is set for today, if there were no delays.
He says only after that will his forces pull back from the area between the towns of Ras al-Ayn and Tal-Aybad. It will withdraw and move back from the border 30 kilometres.
This is the first time the Kurdish force has publicly acknowledged it will withdraw from the border, saying it has coordinated it with the Americans. The agreement has not specified the area of its pullback.
Previous agreements between the US and Turkey over a ‘safe zone’ along the Syria-Turkish border floundered over the diverging definitions of the area.
Khalil said a partial evacuation happened earlier Saturday from Ras al-Ayn after much stalling and with U.S. coordination.”

Hong Kong protesters stage major rally; tear gas, petrol bombs shatter calm
HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong riot police and protesters exchanged tear gas and petrol bombs on Sunday as an illegal anti-government march that attracted tens of thousands descended into chaos, with hundreds of shops trashed and Chinese banks and metro stations targeted.
After two weeks of relative calm, the major rally showed that the pro-democracy campaign has not lost support and that hardcore protesters will continue to clash with police.

“You can see Hong Kongers won’t easily give up their right to demonstrate… today’s turnout is more than I expected,” said Daniel Yeung, an unemployed protester.
“You can see that as long as people keep coming out in large numbers we are safe and can keep fighting,” he said.

“As his party continues to dominate Italian national polls, League leader Matteo Salvini rejected allegations of fascist allusions, saying that fascism is dead — and that to be called a populist “is a compliment”.
The former Italian Interior Minister was asked in an interview with French magazine Le Point about his upcoming rally on the 19th of October in Rome, with some comparing it to former fascist leader Benito Mussolini’s 1922 march on Rome, which occurred in the same month.
“We will fill a square in Rome, San Giovanni, where the left is often found. It is also known as a concert venue,” Salvini said.
“Fascism, like communism, is a dead idea. These are phenomena to be studied, but neither of them will return,” he added.
When asked how he defines himself politically, Salvini stated: “I believe that the left, right, fascist, and communist labels are outdated. I call myself Italian, neither right nor left.”
“I do not criticise the PD (Democratic Party) because it is of the left, but because it depends on the will of Brussels, while for the League, the Italian interest is the priority,” Salvini said.
“For me, ‘populist’ is a compliment, it means being close to the people,” he added.
Salvini’s popularity with the people continues to dominate opinion polls. A survey released by EMG Acqua shows the League with 31.8 per cent support compared to the two ruling coalition parties, the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party, which each polled under 20 per cent.
The League leader also enjoys a 39 per cent confidence rating, ahead of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte who received 35 per cent. Five Star leader Luigi di Maio and Democratic Party Nicola Zingaretti scored 25 and 24 per cent respectively.
Since early September, polls have shown widespread opposition to the current leftist coalition, with an IPSOS poll showing that not only did just 34 per cent of Italians approve of the current government, more Italians preferred the former League-Five Star coalition.”

“The bodies of a child and six others have been recovered from the Mediterranean Sea after an overcrowded wooden migrant transport capsized and sank off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The head of Italy’s League party, Matteo Salvini, has attributed the recent deaths of migrants in the Mediterranean to the open-door policies of Italy’s new left-wing coalition government.
“These deaths are the results of do-gooders, of ‘there is room for everyone’, of open ports, of renewed enthusiasm for the smugglers,” Salvini said.
“The number of landings has tripled. Those who allowed the ports to be reopened, do they mourn these dead people?” he asked.
Deaths of migrants at sea declined under Salvini’s tenure as Italy’s Minister of the Interior, in which he enacted a ‘closed ports’ system. According to the United Nations, deaths on the Mediterranean fell to 2,269 in 2018 when Salvini took over, down from 3,139 in 2017 and 5,096 in 2016.
The sunken boat, which is believed to have started its journey in Libya before making a stop in neighbouring Tunisia — a safe country — was carrying over 50 migrants at the time of the shipwreck on October 7th. Most of the migrants on the boat are believed to be from Tunisia or sub-Saharan Africa, according to Reuters.
A team of 29 Italian Coast Guard scuba divers scoured the ocean floor to recover the bodies of the migrants.

Rodolfo Raiteri, the lead coast guard diver, told La Repubblica: “Seeing the small body there on the seabed, alongside the woman, who was probably his mother, was a blow to the heart.”
After the shipwreck, prosecutors in the city of Agrigento opened an investigation looking into potential charges of negligent homicide over the incident.
A stop-gap measure to deal with the issue of illegal crossings of the Mediterranean was agreed to in Malta last month; however, many fear the so-called Malta Declaration will only serve to encourage more crossings.”

“Thousands of people in the German city of Cologne and in the French capital demonstrated Saturday against Turkey’s offensive in northern Syria.
Cologne city authorities said around 10,000 people took part in marches organized by left-wing groups. Police were out in force amid concerns about possible violence but authorities said the event was largely peaceful.
In Paris, more than 1,000 gathered at the Place de la Republique to denounce Turkey’s actions. Some displayed banners saying “The Turkish state is committing crimes against humanity in total impunity.”
Turkey’s incursion into Syria, aiming to rid the border area of Kurdish fighters as U.S. forces withdraw, has caused death and destruction and sent tens of thousands of civilians fleeing their homes.
“America has abandoned us. Everyone has abandoned us,” said Kurdish student Zade Adjoev in Paris, noting that the Kurds were on the front line as partners with the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group. “When it works for them, they call us Kurds. When it doesn’t, we are terrorists.”
A member of the Kurdish Democratic Council in France, Cemile Renklicay, called Turkey a “more dangerous enemy” than the Islamic State group because the extremists “didn’t have fighter jets.”
In Cologne, some demonstrators carried flags of the Syrian Kurdish force known as the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, which Turkey is trying to push back. Others carried placards with slogans such as “No deals with the AKP regime” — a reference to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s party.
Germany is home to large Turkish and Kurdish communities, and tensions between them have turned violent in the past.”

“A number of African nations including Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and Sudan have closed their borders in recent months just as Europe is relaxing its own external borders.
Last Monday, Nigeria’s customs agency confirmed that it had closed its land borders indefinitely, preventing any movement of goods in an attempt to limit smuggling. “The export and import of goods across land borders is forbidden to ensure total control over what arrives,” said Abuja Hameed Ali, general controller of the Nigerian customs service.
Mr. Ali’s announcement was the first official confirmation of a Nigeria’s move to seal its borders, which had been reported by local media since August.
“We are developing strategies on how to best manage goods when we are ready, the block will gradually cease,” Ali said.
Last week, a Nigerian bishop said he is in favor of border walls because they protect the lives of citizens and allow for controlled, legal migration. Bishop Matthew Kukah of Sokoto said that sealed borders ensure that migration is carried out in an orderly fashion and protect law-abiding citizens from criminals.
“For me as a Nigerian, I would gladly recommend walls especially for the northern parts of Nigeria where thousands of murderers, bandits and outlaws have invaded and claimed the lives of hundreds of citizens, destroyed hundreds of communities and so on,” the bishop said.
For its part, Sudan has closed its borders with Libya and the Central African Republic for “security reasons,” officials have declared. A statement issued by the Sudanese authorities said that any vehicle crossing the border between these two nations does so illegally.
In June, Kenya closed its border with Somalia and suspended cross-border trade as part of security operations against the al-Shabaab terrorist group. “In addition to safety concerns, we are also aware of human trafficking and narcotics, which must cease,” said police chief Kioi Muchangi, adding that “the border will remain closed until further notice.” Kenya has repeatedly closed its border with Somalia, either for security or diplomatic reasons.
In August, Uganda and Rwanda agreed to reopen borders between the two countries and pledged to resolve a diplomatic dispute that had raised fears of hostility. Rwanda had closed a busy border crossing with Uganda in February, accusing the neighbor of having carried out excessive checks on its citizens and supporting the rebel groups against the Kigali government.
Rwanda also recently briefly closed its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo for health reasons, following the confirmation of a third death from Ebola in the Congolese city of Goma. The city is located just opposite the Rwandan city of Gisenyi and many residents of the two cities cross the border for work and other activities.
Equatorial Guinea announced plans in August to build a wall along its shared border with Cameroon. Equatorial Guinea has accused Cameroon of having illegally brought Western Africans into its territory.
As one of Africa’s wealthiest nations, Equatorial Guinea has been particularly attentive to border security following the arrest of 30 heavily armed men from Chad, Sudan and CAR along the border in what it perceived as an “attempted coup d’état by mercenaries.””

“At least four people were killed and dozens injured Sunday after security officials in southern Bangladesh opened fire to disperse hundreds of Muslims during a protest over an alleged social media post undermining Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, police said.
The violence took place in Borhanuddin in the southern district of Bhola when angry protesters demanded the punishment of a Hindu man for the alleged Facebook comment, said local police chief Sarkar Mohammad Kaisar. The man denied making the comment, saying his Facebook account had been hacked.
Kaisar said four people were killed and the injured, including about a dozen police officials, were being treated in local hospitals. Bangladesh’s leading newspapers said about 100 people were injured.
Bhola is 72 miles (116 kilometers) south of the capital, Dhaka.
Local authorities held a meeting Sunday to try to defuse the tensions that began Friday as the Facebook post gained attention in the area. But the angry protesters started attacking security officials, prompting them to retaliate, Kaisar said.
He said that following a complaint by the Facebook account holder, police detained three people for allegedly hacking the account.
Communal tensions often pop up in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, with minority groups saying they face discrimination.
Bangladesh is a parliamentary democracy and its legal system is based on British common law. Despite demands by hard-line Islamist groups, authorities in Bangladesh have long refused to introduce tougher Islamic laws in the South Asian nation.”

FOX News – Gabbard, in defiant video, links Clinton ‘smears’ to her previous Sanders endorsement
Speaking directly to the camera in a video message posted on social media on Sunday, 2020 presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard suggested that Hillary Clinton recently “smeared” her as a “Russian asset” as payback for Gabbard’s defiance of the party establishment in 2016.
“If they can falsely portray me as a traitor, then they can do it to anyone — and in fact, that’s exactly the message they want to get across to you,” Gabbard, a Democrat, said in the video.
“If you stand up to Hillary and the party power brokers — if you stand up to the rich and powerful elite and the war machine, they will destroy you and discredit your message. But, here is the truth: They will not intimidate us. They will not silence us.”
The post ratcheted up an already escalating feud that has rocked the presidential primary. Several candidates, including Beto O’Rourke, Andrew Yang and Marianne Williamson, have criticized Clinton’s unfounded suggestion that Russians have been “grooming” Gabbard to be a third-party spoiler in the race.

Gabbard, D-Hawaii, started the video by referencing her time as the vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from 2013 to 2016 — before she quit and threw her support behind Bernie Sanders. At the time, Gabbard accused party leaders of stifling her freedom of speech and unfairly tipping the scales in favor of eventual nominee Hillary Clinton.
“People warned me in 2016 that my endorsement of Bernie Sanders would be the end of my ‘political career’ — they said Clinton would never forget,” Gabbard said in the video, “that she and her rich and powerful friends — her allies in politics and the media — will make sure you’re destroyed.”
Gabbard asserted that “countless hit pieces full of smears” have been published in an effort to “destroy” her reputation, which included years of military and congressional service.
At last week’s New York Times-CNN primary debate, Gabbard specifically called out the Times and CNN for waging what she called a propaganda campaign against her, while also promoting endless “regime-change” wars.
“The New York Times and CNN have smeared veterans like myself for calling for an end to this regime-change war,” Gabbard said. “Just two days ago, The New York Times put out an article saying I’m a Russian asset and an Assad apologist, and all these different smears. This morning, a CNN commentator said on national television that I’m an asset of Russia. Completely despicable.”
Clinton herself, meanwhile, has come under scrutiny for raising money secretly from Russians when she was secretary of state. “Cash Flowed to Clinton Foundation Amid Russian Uranium Deal,” read a 2015 headline in the Times.
CNN political commentator Van Jones echoed Gabbard’s argument on-air, and called out Clinton’s “disinformation” — saying “she just came out against a sitting U.S. congresswoman, a decorated war veteran, and someone who’s running for the nomination of our party, with just a complete smear and no facts.”
Jones continued: “This is a very, very dangerous game — and there’s a backstory here. Let’s not forget: Tulsi Gabbard was picked out by the Democratic Party establishment and put at the top of the DNC, and they thought she was going to be their golden girl. And, she got in that position in the DNC, and she looked around, and she saw [then-DNC Chairwoman] Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and other people, Clinton allies, doing stuff they shouldn’t have been doing in the primary.
“And, Tulsi publicly quit, and then endorsed Bernie Sanders, and it’s been payback hell ever since,” Jones said.
The brouhaha began in a podcast with former Obama adviser David Plouffe, when Clinton said she wasn’t “making any predictions, but [she thinks Russians] have got their eye on somebody who is currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third-party candidate.”
“She’s the favorite of the Russians” she added, saying they “have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far.”
Clinton described 2016 Green Party candidate Jill Stein as a “Russian asset,” but didn’t explicitly name Gabbard. Then, when Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill was asked if Clinton was referring to Gabbard, he responded: “If the nesting doll fits …”
That prompted Gabbard to respond forcefully to Clinton on Twitter Friday, calling her the “queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party!”
Gabbard, speaking to Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” accused Clinton of targeting her for her anti-war and anti-establishment views. Gabbard has dared Clinton to enter the race, rather than hide behind “proxies.”
In response, several journalists and analysts openly sided with Clinton — with The Week declaring Gabbard’s comments “outrageous.”
Two MSNBC panelists even asserted that Gabbard somehow had outed herself as a “Russian asset” by responding to Clinton’s accusations at all.
“One thing that was interesting about Tulsi Gabbard’s response, I mean she went after Hillary Clinton strong, she said she wasn’t going to run as a third-party candidate, she never denied being a Russian asset,” WBUR’s Kimberly Atkins said on “MSNBC Live.”
Atkins continued: “That was the one aspect that was missing from her response, which you think that would be in the first line or two. It was not there.”
Overlooking the fact that Clinton’s spokesperson signaled that Clinton was referring directly to Gabbard, analyst Jonathan Allen responded: “When Hillary Clinton says there’s a Russian asset, doesn’t say anybody’s name, and Tulsi Gabbard goes, ‘How dare you call me a Russian asset?’ I mean, you know. …”
Anchor Jonathan Capehart then excitedly interjected to argue that Gabbard had indeed admitted she was a secret Russian asset, and essentially raised her hand to say, “Me! Me!” even though Clinton didn’t explicitly “name names.”

“A 20-strong gang set upon four tree surgeons in Rochdale, England, calling them “white bastards” and cutting off a teenage worker’s hand with an axe.
27-year-old Habibur Rahman, of Milnrow Road, Rochdale, gathered the mob after the workers had stopped him from abusing an elderly woman, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Rahman, incensed that he had been “disrespected” on his “territory”, tracked the four workers to the property they were working on in the rape gang blighted city, blocking them in by parking his car across the driveway while the mob approached armed with weapons including a claw hammer, knives, machetes, a knuckle-duster — and the fateful axe.
“I am not going to let them leave,” Rahman said from his car, abusing the workers as “white bastards” who were in his “country”, the court heard.
“They’re going to get what they deserve. They’re going to get stabbed.”
One of the workers, who was just eighteen years old, interposed himself as a “peacemaker”, “completely defenceless” — only for the member of Rahman’s mob armed with the axe, Mohammed Awais Sajid, or ‘Skinny’, to suddenly slam the weapon into the young man’s chest, smashing through his ribs and collapsing a lung.
“[Sajid] followed up with a 360 degree spin of his arm, an act which was doubtless employed to enhance the speed and devastation of the attack,” recalled prosecutor Tim Storrie.
“The blow itself was aimed at the victim’s head. He was dimly aware at this stage of the weeping of blood down into his waistband. He was turning his body, attempting to leave the scene.
“Through good fortune, he said he realised the axe was above him aiming for his head. He put his arm up to defend himself and the blade essentially severed his arm at the wrist.”
The dreadful incident was only brought to a close by one of the tree surgeons revving a chainsaw at the mob to scare them away — although not before Rahman had shattered another of the worker’s noses with a knuckle-duster.
Their teenage victim had to be airlifted to hospital for life-saving emergency surgery and reattachment of his hand — which will never be restored to its full function — which has been followed by another five operations.
Incredibly, Sajid, of Moss Cottage, Kings Road, Rochdale, was acquited of attempted murder. MEN reports that he was instead convicted of a “section 18 wounding” and handed an 18-year term — although there is no indication that this was anything other than a standard determinate sentence, meaning he will almost certainly be automatically released on licence at the halfway point, if not sooner.
Rahman himself was given a four-and-a-half-year term, while brother Zillur Rahma and mob member Arsan Ali each received four-year terms for conspiracy to commit violent disorder — although again, it is standard practice in England that such terms are only served behind bars until their halfway point.
Nine other people investigated in relation to the case were released without charge.
Strangely, there is no mention in local news or a Greater Manchester Police force statement of the authorities treating the crimes of Rahman and his compatriots as racially aggravated — which would attract tougher sentences — despite his statements about the victims being “white bastards”.
Indeed, Rahman claimed he had received racist threats from the tree surgeons — claims the judge dismissed as a “pack of lies”.
“The fact that a mob could be mobilised so quickly and so heavily-armed is clear evidence in my judgement that you are each associated with gang activity,” the judge said, adding that none of them had shown “a shred of remorse” for the attack — strong words which belie the weak sentences he handed down.”

“The refusal of the French government to take back Islamic State fighters from Syria could fuel a new jihadist recruitment drive in France, threatening public safety, a leading anti-terrorism investigator has told AFP.
David De Pas, coordinator of France’s 12 anti-terrorism examining magistrates, said that it would be “better to know that these people are in the care of the judiciary” in France “than let them roam free”.
Turkey’s offensive against Kurdish militia in northeast Syria has sparked fears that some of the 12,000 jihadists, including thousands of foreigners, being held in Syrian Kurdish prisons could escape.
Officials in Paris say 60 to 70 French fighters are among those held, with around 200 adults, including jihadists’ wives, being held in total, along with some 300 children.
France has refused to allow the adults return home, saying they must face local justice. So far Paris has only taken back a handful of children, mostly orphans.
This week, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian travelled to Iraq to try convince Baghdad to take in and try French jihadists being held in northern Syria.
On Friday, in a rare interview, De Pas argued that instability in the region and the “porous nature” of the Syrian Kurdish prison camps risked triggering “uncontrolled migration of jihadists to Europe, with the risk of attacks by very ideological people”.
– ‘Infernal cycle’ –
The Turkish offensive, which has detracted the Kurds’ attention from fighting IS, could also facilitate the “re-emergence of battle-hardened, determined terrorist groups.”
This in turn could spur the establishment of new jihadist networks to supply “French citizens drawn to these groups,” he argued.
Warning of the risk of “a new vicious circle” of radicalised young French people travelling to Syria, De Pas called on the government to demonstrate “the political will to repatriate” the fighters.
Investigating magistrates are independent of the government, but it is extremely rare in France for them to publicly challenge policy.
Last month, IS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi urged the group’s followers to break jihadists and their family members out of prisons in Iraq and Syria.
According to Syrian Kurdish authorities, nearly 800 wives and children of foreign jihadists escaped from a camp for the displaced on the first weekend of the Turkish offensive.
At least three French women ended up in the hands of the Islamic State, according to their lawyer.
Making the case for the fighters to be brought home, De Pas pointed out that Paris had for years been successfully taking back and jailing jihadists expelled from Turkey.
“I understand that there may be nervousness but how we can we protect ourselves if we don’t have our hands on them?” he asked.
The magistrate, who said he was speaking out on the issue because “I would feel responsible if I didn’t say it”, also warned against the temptation of transferring jihadists to Iraq to face justice there.
Once they had been tried and served their sentences in Iraq they would disappear under the radar, he said.
In France, by contrast, “if in 15, 20, 30 years these people still constitute a threat on leaving prison… they will remain under the watch of the intelligence services and the justice system.””

A statement from UNCT in BiH released Wednesday warned about the safety and healthy risks at the Vucjak reception camp located in the city of Bihac, highlighting its proximity to landmine infested areas and high risk of fire and explosions due to possible underground pockets of methane gas.
The statement came in response to the forcible transfer on Oct. 14 of some 1,000 migrants residing in public areas to the camp in line with the decision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Una-Sana Canton.
“Vucjak lacks electricity, running water and medical care, it has very few sanitation facilities,” the statement read.
With the growing number of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees and upcoming winter, the UNCT called upon the BiH authorities to close the camp immediately and to provide humane and safe alternatives.
UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants Felipe Gonzalez Morales has, during his visit to the Vucjak reception camp in October this year, noted that the location of the site “is absolutely inappropriate and inadequate for accommodating human beings.”
The UNCT, which is comprised of 13 UN Funds, Programs and Special Agencies, highlighted that the new accommodation should be in line with national and international laws and obligations, humanitarian principles and with the full guarantee of rights of migrants.
Hundreds of thousands of migrants had passed through the so-called Balkan route on their way to western Europe before the route was closed down in 2016.
Information from BiH’s Ministry of Security showed that 10,525 migrants entered the territory of BiH between January and June this year.

EU is ready to deploy Significant Assistance for the Development of New Reception Camp for Migrants
The EU Office calls upon all levels of government to urgently address the challenges that the migrant flow is posing to BiH. All authorities must step up their efforts and take responsibility.
The EU condemns the forcible transfer of hundreds of migrants to the improvised Vucjak shelter by the Una-Sana Canton police. We call upon the authorities in Bihac and Una-Sana Canton to immediately cease the forcible transfer of migrants to Vucjak. We have been clear in our discussions with all the relevant authorities that the Vucjak shelter must be closed. It is not only unsafe but also an undignified location.
The authorities of the Bihac City and the Una-Sana Canton have been shouldering this problem so far. They must not be left alone.
As winter is approaching, BiH authorities must not put in peril human lives. As an immediate priority, existing facilities should be expanded to offer dignified living conditions. Furthermore, suitable alternative facilities need to be identified by the BiH authorities now.
The EU is ready to deploy significant assistance for the development of those sites. Since 2018 the EU has provided €34 million. This support includes provision of shelter, food, water, sanitation, clothing, psychosocial assistance and access to education and health in five reception centres.
EU assistance is also strengthening migration management capacities through provision of the necessary equipment and assistance to the Una Sana Canton Police, the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs, the BiH Border Police and the Sector for Asylum. It also helps the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the voluntary return of migrants to their countries of origin.
The EU will continue to support improving the capacity of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s authorities for coping with the migration challenges but we also expect all the authorities in the country to work together in good faith to find ways for burden sharing.”

“The Syrian Army has surrounded the Turkish one in the border town of Ras al-Ain in north Syria, where Ankara has launched a military operation, and the Turkish forces are soon to withdraw from that area, member of the Syrian parliament, Jansit Kazan, said on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the Syrian state-run broadcaster said that the Turkish troops entered Ras al-Ain after the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had left it. Shortly after, the SDF and Ankara confirmed the report.
“The Turkish Army might possibly be inside Ras al-Ain, but it will not last for long, it [the army] will retreat … the Turkish Army is already surrounded by the Syrian one. “At least four Nigerian soldiers and a militia fighter were killed in clashes with Islamic State West Africa Province fighters in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state, security sources told AFP on Sunday.
Fighting erupted late on Saturday, October 19 when troops ambushed an ISWAP convoy near Jakana, which is around 40 km (25 miles) west of Borno state capital Maiduguri.
“We lost four soldiers and a member of the vigilante group in the fighting,” a military officer said in reference to a militia in the region.
