‘US is Playing Double Game’: Residents on Turkish-Syrian Border Unhappy With US Patrols in the Area (sputniknews, Sep 12, 2019)

“Over the weekend the United States and Turkey began their first joint patrols in the northern part of Syria along the border with Turkey. This comes after Ankara and Washington agreed last month to set up a “safe zone” along the Syrian-Turkish border that would serve as a buffer between the US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG.
The American-backed YPG militias have led the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against Daesh, but many residents of border towns and villages are suspicious of Turkey’s cooperation with the United States because they do not regard the US as a real ally of Turkey due to American support for the Kurdish forces.
Ankara considers the YPG a terrorist group and an offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been fighting to establish a Kurdish autonomous region in southeast Turkey since the early 1980s.
Locals in the Turkish border towns of Akçaoba, Akçakale, and Ziyaret are in favour of creating a buffer zone but under the control of Turkey without US involvement. They believe that America is playing a double game and is in the region to further its own goals. That’s the view of local resident Mahmut Sönmez:
“We want Turkey to control the ‘safe zone’ because this issue is directly related to our security and the security of our country. We live right on the border, and the presence of YPG here worries us all very much. Our security will be ensured when the YPG units are withdrawn from the border and the Turkish military takes their place. Turkey should create a ‘safe zone’ as soon as possible, and not follow the United States lead, which deliberately drags out time”, Sönmez said.
The Americans have always been dishonest with Turkey, Sönmez added:
“The United States came to our border from a distance of 13,000 km. And there’s only one answer to the question of what they are doing here: they are pursuing their interests, and they want to further destabilise the region. Americans must leave Syria. Because of them, the chaos in the country is only intensifying”, according to the local resident.
Sönmez’s view is echoed by local resident Ibrahim Güne? who also believes that a “safe zone” should be created without US involvement.
“The only way to ensure security at the border is to place the Turkish military on both sides. America cannot be trusted, it is playing a double game: on the one hand, it supplies weapons to the YPG, on the other hand, calls Turkey its ally. But Turkey’s real ally would not help its enemy, a terrorist organisation. We are very concerned that the United States is arming the YPG in the immediate vicinity of our border. These actions indicate that the United States is in fact an ally of the YPG, and is hostile towards Turkey”, Güne? stated.
Another local, Mustafa Yüksel, stressed that Turkey has the right to ensure security on both sides of the border, clearing it of YPG’s presence and creating a “safe zone”.
“Our relatives live in the Syrian villages on the other side of the border; we keep in touch with them every day by phone. They say that the US military carries out daily patrols along with YPG units. If a ‘safe zone’ is created, Syrian refugees will be able to return home. Now many refugees cannot come to their homes because they are afraid of the YPG. Many refugees live in Akçakale. They say they will return to their homeland only if the YPG forces are withdrawn from the region. Tel Abyad and Ras Al Ain are Arab regions, but the Arab population does not trust the YPG because they are not good with the Arabs”, he said.
According to Abid Ipek, the “safe zone” cannot be formed until the YPG units completely leave the region:
“We were all very happy when the Turkish military was patrolling the border, but a ‘safe zone’ has not yet been formed; joint patrols are currently underway. It will be possible to talk about creating a ‘safe zone’ when the YPG militia completely leaves the area and the Turkish armed forces will take their place. As for the United States, they are not fulfiling their obligations regarding the creation of a ‘safe zone’. Judging by what local residents tell us on the Syrian side of the border, YPG units were not withdrawn from the border zone. They just changed into civilian clothes, and continue to patrol the border areas. We do not trust America”, the local resident concluded.
The Turkish Defence Ministry has confirmed the start of the joint patrols, while US Army spokesman Col. Myles B. Caggins said that Turkish and US forces “observed first-hand progress on destroyed YPG fortifications and areas where YPG elements voluntarily departed the area”.
Caggins also added that the patrol will allow the coalition and US’s Syrian Democratic Forces partners to “remain focused on achieving the enduring defeat of Daesh*”, while at the same time addressing Ankara’s security concerns…”

Nigerian-born rap artist Jesse Ekene Nweke Conable, who goes by the handle JCBUZ, has published a rant in a closed Instagram group where he propagates racism and calls to kill whites, the news outlet Samhällsnytt reported.
According to Samhällsnytt, the Instagram account Barasvarta (“Blacks only”) is open only to blacks and has several hundred followers. It is run by Conable himself and features slogans such as “Black Power in Sweden” and “F*** White People”. In one of the videos, the Lund-based artist called on his “blacks brothers and sisters” to “continue the war”.
According to Conable, “we, blacks” will “become number one and take over these whites”.
“Like these whites took us as slaves we should take them as slaves and treat them even worse”, Conable said in his rant.
According to him, blacks will become “the best at everything”.
“We’ll take their b*****s and we’ll take their money. To be perfectly honest, we will be the best race ever”, Conable went on. “We are African warriors, they are not on our level. This is just the beginning, black power”.
“If any white guy or white girl is trying to talk s**t about you, shoot them! If they talk s**t about your family, shoot them!” He concluded, demonstrating a gun with his hand.
The account also shares a meme with the text “You cannot be racist if you are not white”, as well as a video of a black boy winning a wrestling match against a white boy, followed by cheerful comments.
Following the Samhällsnytt publication, the account cautioned its readership of “a snitch among us”, whom it pledged to “delete”.
Jesse Ekene Nweke Conable or JCBUZ has almost 280,000 subscribers to his two YouTube accounts, where he reviews contemporary hip hop songs in Sweden and shares his own rap music. The 22-year-old immigrated from Nigeria in 2008. He now lives in Lund and has Swedish citizenship.”

EU launches religion in society scheme
EU’s foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini on Friday presented the “Global Exchange on Religion in Society”. This new initiative aims to connect community actors inside and outside Europe in the field of religion and social inclusion with a wide range of activities.
The programme will be like “an Erasmus for civil society,” Mogherini said.
The exchange platform is expected to be operational in the first half of 2020.

Federica Mogherini to host a conference Towards Global Exchange on Religion in Society
Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, will this Friday in Brussels host a conference on religious engagement, social inclusion and foreign policy, where she is due to announce a new EU-sponsored ‘Global Exchange on Religion in Society’.
The ‘Global Exchange on Religion in Society’ will be open to civil society practitioners of diverse backgrounds (including faith-based actors), who are already working on issues at the intersection of faith and social inclusion. The new initiative will connect community actors inside and outside Europe, allowing them to learn from each other, explore partnerships, acquire new skills, and to scale-up positive experiences of coexistence among people of different faiths in pluralistic societies.
Federica Mogherini said: “NGO workers and grassroots activists experience in their daily work the positive role that religion can play in building inclusive societies.
With the Global Exchange on Religion in Society we want to connect and empower these people who are already making our societies more inclusive and just. It is an Erasmus for civil society actors working on faith and social inclusion”.
The new initiative will be entrusted to an organisation through an open call for tenders. The Global Exchange on Religion in Society is expected to be operational in the first half of 2020 and will be funded by the Partnership Instrument. Interested organisations can participate in the open call by applying as indicated here.
The public conference on 6 September(link is external) will bring together 150 representatives of civil society, governments and religious institutions. Participants will discuss different experiences of religious engagement from across the world, to better understand how the new Global Exchange can complement and interact with existing initiatives.
The event builds on a roundtable discussion held on 25 June (link is external)with the High Representative and participants in a pilot project of the Exchange.

Pakistan has been at loggerheads with India over Kashmir for several decades, as it claims to be a stakeholder in Kashmir and India’s and see India’s move as unacceptable. India and Pakistan fought three wars since they gained freedom from the British colonial rule in 1947, two of them over Kashmir. Both govern it in parts but claim the territory in full.”

“Following John Bolton’s sudden departure from the position of national security adviser on Tuesday, sources from the US administration claimed that Mike Pompeo might become the next person to take the post. Ex-Deputy National Security Adviser Charles Kupperman currently occupies the position.
Muslim civil rights group The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is “appalled” by the appointment of Charles Kupperman as a temporary US national security advisor following John Bolton’s resignation. Kupperman’s historical involvement with the Center for Security Policy (CSP) that allegedly promoted anti-Muslim conspiracy theories is behind these sentiments, CAIR’s website reads.
“While we welcome the resignation of John Bolton, who has a long track record of promoting anti-Muslim policies and associating with hate groups, we cannot simply replace one Islamophobe with another,” said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad a day after Bolton’s resignation.
CAIR says their concerns are related to Kupperman serving on the CSP’s board from 2001 until 2010 while Frank Gaffney headed it. The Muslim group regards Gaffney as an “Islamophobe and notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist” and a promoter of the idea that “Muslims in public service are infiltrating the government on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood”.
CAIR’s website also cited Gaffney’s quote where he allegedly said that “most of the Muslim-American groups of any prominence in America are now known to be, as a matter of fact, hostile to the United States and its Constitution.”
“CSP has continuously promoted Islamophobic conspiracy theories, and anyone, like Mr Kupperman, who has so closely associated with them for so long is – at the very least – complicit in their brand of anti-Muslim bigotry and should not be entrusted with one of the highest-ranking security roles in the United States,” Nihad Awad added.
In January the group already expressed their concerns about Kupperman’s appointment as Deputy National Security Adviser following the same matters.
Charles Kupperman has been appointed temporary US national security adviser following John Bolton’s resignation with Donald Trump taking to Twitter on Tuesday, to announce that Bolton’s services were “no longer needed in the White House”. While Bolton insists that he resigned from the position by his own will, it is clear that he and the president had many disagreements between them, most notably concerning the Iranian issue.
In the meantime, Donald Trump stated that the new national security adviser would be named as soon as next week, meaning that Kupperman who was himself appointed by Bolton due to their similar views on many policies is not likely to remain in the job for long. It was recently reported that Mike Pompeo, who is currently the Secretary of State, could also become the second person in history to combine this position with the duties of national security adviser.”

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong activists plan to combine pro-democracy protests with traditional lantern celebrations marking the Mid-Autumn Festival this weekend, after a brief lull in sometimes violent demonstrations that have rocked the Chinese-ruled city since June.
The protest schedule includes another in a series of “stress tests” of the airport, which in recent weeks have seen the blocking of approach roads, street fires and the trashing of a nearby MTR subway station.
Protesters also jammed the airport arrivals hall last month, leading to canceled or delayed flights and clashes with police.
Activists plan to gather outside the British consulate on Sunday to demand that China honors the Sino-British Joint Declaration that was signed in 1984, laying out the former British colony’s future after its handover to China in 1997.
China says Hong Kong is now its internal affair. Britain says it has a legal responsibility to ensure China abides by its obligations under the Joint Declaration.
Hong Kong returned to China under a “one country, two systems” formula that guarantees freedoms not enjoyed on the mainland, including an independent legal system.

Some lessons get learned the hard way. It’s not necessarily anyone’s fault. But it is important to recognize them as lessons learned in the clear framing of hindsight. The Michael Flynn case, including its reverberations as a component of the “Russiagate” drama, is one of those lessons.
The following struck me forcibly during the hunt for a “Flynn 302” in the Mueller report with the date of 19 January 2017, which Michael Flynn’s just-unsealed Brady motion names in its extensive list of materials. To siimplify what is being said, General Flynn did nothing wrong, the DOJ had evidence he did nothing wrong but charged him anyway and then broke the law (it is called Discovery or Disclosure depending on which state you live in) by not turning the evidence (exculpatory evidence) that the General was Innocent.This is typical of what the Dems have been doing ever since Obama took office, he (Obama) said the was going to fundamently change America. Yesterday, the New York Post ran a 9/11 remembrance piece that quoted the heart-felt reaction of two of the “Squad” members — Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib — who were old enough to remember the attacks by 19 adherents to their faith. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, “who was 11 when the hijacked planes struck the Twin Towers, retweeted a video posted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi showing lawmakers observing a moment of silence in Washington.” (No doubt she would have had something brilliant to say if she had been older at the time.)
Both Omar and Tlaib were uncharacteristically somber in their recollections, probably because the “Squad” had been slammed at the memorial ceremony by a man who lost his mother on 9/11, and the two felt it would be prudent to appear less anti-American than usual.

Report: Dems took secret trips to Mexico, coached illegals on how to exploit immigration laws

Fox News has obtained a letter from House Oversight Committee ranking member Jim Jordan that accuses Democratic staff of partaking in multiple secret trips to Mexico.
In one of the more extreme accusations in the letter, Jordan also cites reports that Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) allegedly “coached” migrants on how to exploit federal immigration law loopholes. A July report in the Washington Examiner claimed that Escobar had sent staff to coach migrants in the border town of Ciudad Juarez on how to circumvent the law by “pretend[ing] they cannot speak Spanish to exploit a loophole letting them to return to the U.S.” (Migrants sent to Mexico could remain there for a period of up to five years until their asylum case can be heard, and therefore must be fluent in Spanish under the policy.)
Jordan asserts that committee staff took two trips to Mexico in August without the knowledge of Republicans. “Although you have the authority to direct Committee staff to travel internationally on official committee business, you have not explained why you authorized this travel into Mexico or what you sought to learn through these trips,” the Ohio Republican wrote.
Jordan surmised that the trips – one of which required a special escort by Border Patrol back over the border – were designed “to delegitimize the administration’s border security efforts and vilify the men and women who protect our border.”

Trump’s explanation of the heavy steel exoskeleton actually explains what happened. Once the aircraft hit 15 stories below the top everything above it collapsed downwards for obvious reasons and then kept crashing down one floor at a time as the debris above got heavier and heavier.

Brexit Will Not Drift UK Apart From Migration Crisis
Disagreements over migration policies are believed to be one of the key reasons that the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in 2016. Amid the looming possibility of the free movement of people to stop, the migrant traffic via La Manche, also known as the English Channel between the United Kingdom and France, has reportedly intensified.
The British Border Force regularly reports the interception of inflatable boats, including those operated by smugglers, with irregular migrants aboard that are trying to reach the UK shore.
According to the UK Home Office in 2019, more than 900 migrants have successfully made it through the passage from France to the United Kingdom via La Manche, which at its narrowest point is about 20 miles wide, and at least 65 were returned.
“The increase in La Manche crossings shows well that if people want to go there, nothing could prevent them from it. We can build walls and barriers, but what we see is that people are still here, they continue coming despite police pressure and daily police violence against this population”, according to Yann Manzi, a co-founder of the French-based migrant charity Utopia56.
Brexit will not curb the migrant influx, he continued, because when asylum seekers, having gone so far away from home, are denied acceptance, they have no choice but to go to other places.
That is what has happened in France, where authorities of the Calais port-city keep dismantling migrant camps.
“All the people in Calais did not want to go to England. The proof is that after the dismantling of the camps [first dismantling in autumn 2016] and [former] Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve promised that all the people in the camps would be able to claim asylum, which was not the case … People had to go to England because they didn’t have a choice”, Manzi said.
The charity co-founder added that, instead of trying to complicate the migrants’ journey, the authorities — not only in the United Kingdom but in all other countries — should focus on working out a policy framework that would allow people to apply for asylum in the country of their choice, and in the meantime, they should create humanitarian corridors to prevent migrants from dying and suffering in thousands.
Frontline Wants Its Migration Burden Shared Equally
In 2019 alone, an approximate 34,000 people have arrived in Greece, the highest number since 2016. Amid the surge of arrivals and limited reception facilities, the Greek authorities struggle to accommodate all the newcomers and continue to keep them stranded on the islands in the Aegean Sea. Despite the migrant camps being overcrowded and dire living conditions, the Greek authorities struggle to come up with a major policy solution, being tied by EU and NATO migration agreements.
Andrea Contenta, the humanitarian affairs coordinator at the Doctors Without Borders (MSF), believes that the problem is not so much the numbers per se, but rather “the clear lack of political will in addressing the issue of migration to Europe, which cannot be solved with temporary measures.”
“MSF is witnessing an on-going health and mental health crisis amongst the men, women, and especially children residing in Moria, Vathi and Vial Reception and Identification Centers (RICs). These are the consequence of ill-thought policies, which deliberately have kept people in places, in which they are not provided with even the basic services,” Contenta said.
She added that there were children among the stranded migrants who stopped speaking and were severely harming themselves.
“What we see today on the Greek islands reflects the ongoing conflicts and humanitarian situation in the broader region. The majority of people coming to Greece today has travelled through Turkey and is from Afghanistan, Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon and Iran, amongst others nationalities”, she said.
But Turkey itself is also struggling to cope with a strong influx of migrants. In 2016, the European Union and Ankara concluded an agreement, under which the latter was expected to curb the flow of illegal migrants who tried to transit through Turkey in an effort to proceed further into the European continent. The package came with a whopping financial component of 6 billion euros ($6.6 million) to be paid to Turkey.
Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened “to open gates” to Europe for migrants, saying that Ankara has not received the agreed amount of support and refuses to carry the migration burden alone any longer.
“We have no choice but to open the doors. If you want to support us, then do it. Are we supposed to bear this burden alone?” Erdogan said.
Rome’s stance on migrants has been tough, with Italy notably refusing to let NGO search-and-rescue boats provide adequate assistance to migrants in the Mediterranean and to disembark on its soil.
However, with Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini, known for his anti-migrant rhetoric, leaving the government, NGOs hope for a change in Italy’s migration policies.
“Sadly, recent Italian migration management policies, backed by the European Union, deteriorated the situation in the Mediterranean Sea. Italian authorities have put all their efforts into transfer of Search and Rescue coordination responsibilities to the Libyan Coast Guard and its Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC). This was despite European states being fully aware of the alarming level of violence and exploitation which refugees, migrants and asylum seekers are returned to by the LCG. Additionally, the Libyan JRCC has repeatedly demonstrated that they do not have the capacity to fully coordinate a rescue in such a large zone; additionally, they do not provide rescue vessels with a place of safety for disembarkation in line with international laws,” Bianca Benvenuti, MSF advocacy officer in Italy, said.
As she rightly noted, political disputes over the permission for the disembarkation of ships with migrants aboard has become a regular occurrence. For example, the Open Arms rescue ship with about a hundred migrants on board had been stranded for nearly three weeks, with people reportedly experiencing panic attacks and throwing themselves into the sea to swim their way to shore, before it was allowed to dock at the Italian island of Lampedusa.
“The Italian government has just changed and we’ll have to wait to understand which changes might occur in migration policies. We keep up the hope that the newly formed government will not be blind to the unnecessary sufferings Italian and European governments are causing to this people, and implement policies that prioritize people and lives,” Benvenuti added.
Backrow Reluctant To Let Migrants In
The influx of migrants has already left a deep trace on the European population and all sorts of voices are heard from around the bloc about the need to come up with a sustainable solution.
“Most EU regions with rapidly expanding populations were characterised by high levels of net migration plus adjustment, rather than rapid natural population change,” the Eurostat Regional Yearbook 2019 read.
Yet, not all EU countries agree that the solution to the migration inflow, started by German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s policy of “open arms” in 2015, should be their responsibility.
The so-called Visegrad Four — Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia — have even enshrined anti-immigrant policies into their national legislation, with Hungary building a razor wire-topped fence along its border with Serbia in 2015.
In 2017, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s administration adopted new laws requiring all asylum seekers to remain in so-called container camps in two mandatory transit zones along the border while waiting for the verdict on their cases. The legislation, touted as the Stop Soros law, also criminalised any attempts, including of non-governmental organisations, to provide aid to undocumented migrants in any form.
France’s migration policies have also sparked tumultuous debates in the country, and outside of it. Thousands of French police patrols have been deployed on the borders under the pretext of fighting the threat of terrorism, but, essentially, to also send back thousands of migrants coming from neighbouring countries. In March, the European Court of Justice ruled that using anti-terrorism measures by the French border patrol to push back irregular migrants through internal EU borders was illegal, much to Spain’s salutation.
“The authorities have put hundreds and thousands of people on the streets; since this summer we have seen a nation-wide closure of squats, which resulted in a large amount of homeless people in the streets. But it’s not because of the influx of people, it’s because of the policy of the state, which continues scrapping the budget for helping the poor… trying to increase the amount of returns. What we see is that people are exhausted, there is real psychological police violence”, Utopia56’s Manzi said.
It was not until June that the European Council toughened the rules of irregular migration management. The agreed measures included allowing police to “take action” in case migrants do not cooperate by using detentions, a mechanism for voluntary returns and, as a last resort, deportations.

“An Italian think-tank has predicted that due to mass migration and differing birthrates, half of all Italians could be Muslims by the end of the century.
The FareFuturo foundation released its findings this week as part of their “First report on the Islamisation of Europe,” in cooperation with the national-conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, Italian newspaper Il Giornale reports.
According to the report, Muslims represent 30.1 per cent of all the foreign nationals residing in Italy as of the start of 2019 and stated that in 2018 the number of Muslims grew by 127,000 while Christians declined by 145,000 in the same period.
The authors claim that nearly eight out of ten immigrants coming into Italy are Muslims and also noted that Muslims tend to have much higher birthrates than native Italians, with Muslim women having twice as many children on average.
The Italian public has also become more concerned with “more effective interventions in terms of security, legality and protection of culture and our customs”, according to the report, but also notes that Italians condemn outright xenophobia.
The stagnant and declining birthrate has been discussed for years in Italy with the Italian Statistics Bureau (ISTAT) releasing a report last year predicting a decline in the population of around ten per cent by 2065.
In 2018, Italy was ranked 212 out of 223 countries for new live births with 8.6 births per 1,000 citizens.
Populist politician and former interior minister Matteo Salvini has repeatedly brought up the issue of population decline, advocating for policies and incentives to increase the ailing birth rate.
In July of last year, Salvini spoke out on the subject saying, “A country which does not create children is destined to die” and warned that the political left would use the issue to garner support for increased mass migration levels.
Now that Salvini and the League are no longer in government, his pro-family policies are likely in jeopardy as the left-wing Democratic Party (PD), which joined the new governing coalition, has previously pushed for opening the country’s borders and birthright citizenship to increase the population of the country.”

The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has released a report, Designating Hate: New Policy Responses to Stop Hate Crime, which recommends radical initiatives to tackle “hate” groups, even if they have not committed any kind of violent activity.
The problem, as the think-tank defines it, is “the dangerous nature of hateful groups, including on the far right like Britain First and Generation Identity. But current laws are unable to stop groups that spread hate and division, but do not advocate violence”.
