Germany: Islamist tried to shoot judge – He doesn’t accept anyone insulting his religion+++
After just a few seconds there is a first scandal in the large courtroom of the Augsburg Criminal Court. The defendant spits in the direction of the journalists who take pictures of him. Shortly afterwards, when the judges enter the hall, Haidar A., 26 years old, refuses to stand up. He wrangles with judicial officers and policemen. When the situation calms down again, the presiding judge Sandra Mayer orders the defendant to wear a thin spit hood over his head during the trial. It is supposed to prevent him from spitting around. The trial at the Regional Court in Augsburg started yesterday, Tuesday, under increased security measures anyway. Haidar A., who claims to be a Palestinian, allegedly tried to murder several judges and a prosecutor during a trial. The prosecution accuses the man, who also attracted attention because of his Islamist statements, of six counts of attempted murder.It is about an incident in the summer of 2017, when the Syrian was on trial in Augsburg for trying to behead a roommate in an accommodation for asylum seekers in Hurlach (Landsberg district). He had rammed a knife down the roommate’s throat. The stab was twelve centimeters deep, the victim survived only thanks to a quick emergency surgery. During the verdict on this crime – he was sentenced to almost 13 years in prison for attempted murder – Haidar A. tried to grab a policeman’s pistol. There was a wrangling, but in the end several officials could overpower and tie him up. Haidar A. had previously also thrown a shoe at the prosecutor and spat several times in the direction of the judges.Haidar A. admits without hesitation that he wanted to grab the policeman’s weapon and shoot the prosecutor and the judges using the weapon. He just did not succeed. “I would have started with the prosecutor,” he said in court on Tuesday. He felt he had been treated unfairly by the judiciary. He defends himself for the knife attack on his roommate in the accommodation. The roommate had repeatedly insulted Islam. This was the only reason why he attacked him and stabbed him with a knife. He doesn’t accept anyone insulting his religion, says Haidar A. “That pisses me off.” The presiding judge wants to know whether he will continue to become violent if someone insults his religion. He only answers: “Not immediately.” When he is asked whether he is an Islamist, he says: “I am proud to be a Muslim”. He also says that although he does not hate German society, he hates the German police and judiciary. The defendant stated in an interrogation with the police that he had fled Syria because of the civil war. During his flight, he was also temporarily accommodated and well treated by the terrorist organization “Islamic State”, so he could not say anything bad about the IS. “Meanwhile, the idea of repatriating migrants once their counties have become more peaceful is catching fire across Sweden.
The leader of the party Sweden Democrats, Jimmie Åkesson, has penned an opinion piece in the daily newspaper Aftonbladet, spelling out what he called “more reality-based immigration politics”, compared with other parties.
While placing the blame for what he claimed to be a man-made migrant crisis on the ruling Social Democrats and welcoming the centre-right liberal-conservative Moderates’ recent message to reduce asylum immigration, Åkesson called this measure “unambitious”.
According to Åkesson, Sweden should limit the number of accepted asulym seekers to zero, as long as the situation remains as problematic as today.
Furthermore, life in the so-called “parallel society” should be made impossible, while those who are in Sweden illegally must be persuaded to leave the country or efficiently identified and taken into custody pending an expulsion, Åkesson contended.
The Sweden Democrats long-standing leader also argued that the country’s Migration Board should “more pronouncedly work on repatriation”, which he called “the last step in responsible refugee assistance”.
In conclusion, Åkesson suggested that the entire perception of migration must change. According to him, citizenship can no longer be something that is almost automatically distributed to “those who have been here long enough”.
“As a minimum, anyone who becomes a Swedish citizen must be able to understand Swedish, understand and respect Swedish laws and regulations, and show an understanding of social codes, norms and values”, Åkesson concluded in his opinion piece co-signed with Sweden Democrat immigration spokesperson Paula Bieler.
The idea of repatriating migrants, pioneered ahead of the 2018 election by the right-wing party Alternative for Sweden, which was formed by maverick Sweden Democrats who thought their mother party wasn’t doing enough, is catching fire in Swedish society.
Last week, Svenska Dagbladet’s leading conservative columnist Ivar Arpi sparked a debate by suggesting in a series of tweets that the time was ripe for Sweden to consider annual repatriation of refugees.
“Migration Agency: conflict level in Syria lower. For some reason, though, those who have already received refugee status are not affected by this. Why not? In a reasonable world, this would have meant that the Syrians who had come here now would begin to return en masse”, Arpi tweeted.
While Arpi’s idea was supported by other conservative commenters such as Annie Heberlein, who suggested the very same thing, he was immediately branded “racist” by the liberal-leaning press. Meanwhile, the Sweden Democrats remain a pariah in the Swedish Parliament, despite being the country’s third-largest party with 17.5 percent of the vote.
As the Sweden Democrats were conspicuously left out of the recent cross-party talks on escalating violence in the country, Åkesson suggested this was tantamount to “kicking out the surgeon from the operation room, while the patient is bleeding to death”.
Sweden currently has one of the EU’s most generous immigration policies, having taken in over 200,000 asylum seekers since the 2015 migrant crisis alone.”

“Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf has expressed public concern over the number of shootings and explosions across the country that are often linked to gang crime.
The Swedish monarch spoke out about the recent trend saying during a meeting with senior Swedish police officials alongside his daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, saying: “The anxiety that these actions cause to the public is shared by me and my family.”
His Royal Highness added in comments reported by Die Welt that he and the Swedish royal household supported the police and other branches of law enforcement while sympathising with the families of victims of shootings and other acts of violence.
Shootings and explosions have become a major issue in Sweden this year with the country seeing at least 120 explosive incidents from January to July, a figure up 45 per cent compared to the previous year.
The southern multicultural city of Malmö has seen a particularly high number of explosive incidents so far in 2019, including three explosions in a span of just 24 hours earlier in the year.
A large explosion in Copenhagen in neighbouring Denmark also occurred this year and it was later revealed that the suspects behind the blast, which occurred at a Tax Authority building, were Swedes from the city of Malmö.
As a result of the increase in explosions and continued gang violence, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has commissioned an investigation into the problem, and invited all political parties, aside from the populist Sweden Democrats, to participate in discussions on the topic.
Special investigator Kazimir Åberg has proposed new policies to combat the issue including increasing the maximum sentence for firearms offences from six to seven years in prison and to give more power to customs officials to intercept firearms and explosive devices shipped from overseas.
While giving more power to customs officials and border police could reduce weapons being smuggled from the Balkans, investigators have also noted an increase in robberies at construction sites of explosives as well.”

“Migration commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos has called on European Union member states to take migrants directly from countries in Africa, citing current talks with Rwanda.
Avramopoulos said he would like to see members of the EU bring far more “vulnerable” migrants directly from refugee camps in various African countries saying: “I call on all Member States to step up their resettlement efforts and implement their commitments to receive refugees as soon as possible.”
The EU Commissioner specifically mentioned Libya, a country with an estimated 500,000 or more migrants, saying in comments reported by Die Welt: “It is necessary to carry out more emergency evacuations from Libya.”
The call echoes that of migrant transport NGO captain Carola Rackete who demanded that the EU take in at least 500,000 migrants from Libya. NGO Doctors Without Borders has also made similar demands to Germany but cited a much smaller number of migrants.
Avramopoulos said that so far, around 35,000 migrants have come to Europe from Africa as part of the EU resettlement programme in the last two years, but added: “We must not become complacent. Relocations should become the most important way to join the European Union for those in need of protection.”
“We must make resettling a priority if we want to support partner countries that have taken in refugees. However, this is also important in order to provide refugees who want to travel to Europe in safe ways so that they no longer have to resort to dangerous and illegal sea and land routes,” he added.
Not everyone in the EU agrees that the political bloc should open up to further migration. Over the weekend, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated: “The safety of the people of Europe is paramount, migration must be kept outside Europe.”
His comments came in reaction to the mass stabbing attack over the weekend in the French city of Lyon by an Afghan asylum seeker that left one person dead and another nine wounded.
“It cannot be part of the European way of life to be afraid of our lives at a bus stop, a street fair, or a concert because there are people who live here in Europe but want to destroy us,” Szijjártó said.”

Canada would receive 100,000 Palestinians from Lebanon and Syria and Spain would receive 16,000 Palestinians from Lebanon, alongside similar agreements with Belgium and France.
The Lebanon-based newspaper Al Akhbar reported that an official source in one of the Palestinian factions revealed that there is an understanding between the United States and Canada for Canada to receive 100,000 Palestinians (40,000 from Lebanon and another 60,000 from Syria).
In addition, there is a further understanding with Spain to receive 16,000 Palestinians from Lebanon, alongside similar agreements with Belgium and France. The understandings would lead to the reduction of the cost of migration from $12,000 to $7,000 per person.
The representative of Hamas in Lebanon, Ahmed Abdel-Hadi, told Al Akhbar that part of the Deal of the Century aims to resettle between 75,000 to 100,000 Palestinians in Lebanon and displace the rest to more than one country.

Over the last weeks, Turkish officials threatened a similar offensive in northeastern Syria, where troops from the U.S.-led coalition are deployed to help the Syrian Kurdish-led forces in combatting remnants of the Islamic State group.

With U.S. backing, they proved to be the most effective fighting force against the Islamic State group and announced its territorial defeat earlier this year. The Home Ministry on Wednesday named Masood Azhar, chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba, as terrorists under the amended Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act.

“A Tehran court has sentenced a labour rights activist to 11 years and six months in jail and 74 lashes for taking part in a peaceful International Workers’ Day gathering in Tehran on May 1, according to the human rights group Iran Human Rights Monitor.
Atefeh Rangriz, a researcher, who is currently being held at Qarchak Prison in Varamin, stood trial on August 5.
The notorious Judge Mohammad Mogheiseh at Branch 28 of Iran’s Revolutionary Court sentenced Rangriz and the sentence was handed to her defence lawyer on August 31.
Rangriz was one of 36 labour activists arrested during the peaceful gathering outside the Iranian parliament in Tehran, which was violently attacked by the Regime’s security and intelligence officials.
Rangriz was held in solitary confinement in section 209 of Tehran’s Evin prison for several weeks and denied access to her family. After that, she was subjected to interrogations, where the authorities tried to pressure her to “confess” to planning protests intended to harm national security and denied access to a lawyer.
On July 8, following weeks of interrogation, she was taken to the prosecutor’s office in Evin prison and charged with “gathering and colluding against national security”, “spreading propaganda against the system”, “disrupting public order” and “insulting officers on duty”.
She was moved to Qarchak Prison near Tehran in mid-June. On August 15, she penned an open letter describing the conditions in Qarchak Prison as “hell” and saying that each ward holds up to 150 inmates, while 12 prisoners are crammed into a “cabin” that is only 8 square meters.
While some of those arrested with Rangriz were released, others were given prison sentences, like journalist and student Marzieh Amiri who was sentenced to 10 years and six months in jail and 148 lashes.
In related news, the Iranian courts also sentenced two Tehran Bus Company employees to prison and lashes for participating in the peaceful Labor Day protest.
Nasrin Javadi, a retired worker, was given seven years behind bars and 74 lashes, while current bus driver Rasoul Taleb Moghadam was given two years in prison, 74 lashes, two years in exile, and is banned from using a mobile phone.
Also, Parvin Mohammadi, vice president of the Free Union of Iranian Workers, was sentenced to one year in prison for “propaganda against the state” after attending a Labour Day protest in Karaj.
Over 80 labour unions worldwide have protested against the sentences given to the Iranian Labor Day demonstrators.
Elsewhere Saba Kord Afshari was sentenced to 24 years in prison for protesting the forced hijab and refusing to make a false confession.”

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Wednesday withdrew an extradition bill that triggered months of often violent protests so the Chinese-ruled city can move forward from a “highly vulnerable and dangerous” place and find solutions.
Her televised announcement came after Reuters reports on Friday and Monday revealing that Beijing had thwarted an earlier proposal from Lam to withdraw the bill and that she had said privately that she would resign if she could, according to an audio recording obtained by Reuters.

“Lingering violence is damaging the very foundations of our society, especially the rule of law,” a sombre Lam said as she sat wearing a navy blue jacket and pink shirt with her hands folded on a desk in front of her.
It was not clear when the recording was made. The withdrawal still needs the approval of the Legislative Council, which is not expected to oppose Lam.

Now there’s a new report that the US military has been deployed to the impoverished South American nation of Guyana, the first time in a decade. The country is located on South America’s North Atlantic coast and borders Venezuela to the West.

A Perth vegan has taken her neighbours all the way to the Supreme Court, demanding they stop smoking, bouncing balls and even cooking barbecues in the backyard.
Cilla Carden, from Girrawheen, in Perth’s northern suburbs said she’s fed up with the smell of meat cooking on the barbecue next door.

Iran to release seven crew members of detained British tanker
DUBAI/LONDON (Reuters) – Iran will free seven crew members of the detained British-flagged tanker Stena Impero, Iranian state television reported on Wednesday, although the vessel’s owner said it had yet to receive any official confirmation of the release date.
The Swedish-owned Stena Impero was detained by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on July 19 in the Strait of Hormuz waterway for alleged marine violations, two weeks after Britain detained an Iranian tanker off the territory of Gibraltar. That vessel was released in August.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi told the TV that the seven, who include Indian citizens, were allowed to leave the tanker on humanitarian grounds and could leave Iran soon.

Boris Johnson suffered a major loss in Parliament on Tuesday, as the departure of a single Conservative to sit with the Liberal Democrats eliminated his governing majority, and a subsequent vote saw the MPs seize the parliamentary agenda from him. The latter means the House of Commons can now pass laws that compel Johnson’s compliance.
As early as Wednesday, Parliament is likely to introduce a bill to delay Brexit again until 31 January 2020. The vote could be held before Parliament adjourns under the prorogation order next week.
Delaying Brexit was also the upshot of all the parliamentary maneuvers undertaken during Theresa May’s turn at the helm – including several maneuvers of her own.
The question that occurs to one out here in the cheap seats is this. In light of the repeated bad-faith actions it has required to bring Parliament and the UK to the current pass, is there any basis for thinking that delaying Brexit just happens to be the outcome of a lot of people acting in good faith?

This past Labor Day was no exception to the rule, with 7 of 41 shooting victims dying of their injuries.
So who does the Windy City’s mayor blame for its epic gun violence? If you said “Republicans,” give yourself a cigar. Responding to a tweet by Ted Cruz in which the senator claimed that “gun control doesn’t work,” adding, “Look at Chicago,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot contended that the record gun violence in her city was the fault of Republicans who never pass “common sense” gun laws. She then tweeted a graphic to prove her point.

That’s my response to the latest trial balloon floated by the White House to join with Silicon Valley on a creepy program monitoring Americans’ “neurobehavioral signs” to (purportedly) prevent gun violence.
President Donald Trump’s old friend, former NBC head Bob Wright, has been pushing an Orwellian surveillance scheme called “Safe Home” — “Stopping Aberrant Fatal Events by Helping Overcome Mental Extremes” — that would cost taxpayers between $40 million and $60 million. The Washington Post, owned by Amazon billionaire founder Jeff Bezos, reports that the plan could incorporate “Apple Watches, Fitbits, Amazon Echo and Google Home,” as well as ” fMRIs, tractography and image analysis.”
Here’s the big lie: Wright’s group promises that privacy will be “safeguarded,” profiling “avoided” and data protection capabilities a “cornerstone of this effort.”
There’s so much bullcrap packed in that statement it should be banned as a global warming pollutant. Anything involving Google should trigger automatic danger warnings of invasive data mining. Google is using an opaque system to “leak” personal information about its users to outside companies, according to new research by rival web browser Brave.
Brave’s chief policy officer Johnny Ryan on Wednesday accused Google of violating European privacy laws and its own policies with a “workaround” that allows the tech giant to share identifying information about its users with other companies for advertising purposes.

The United States has added to the Iran-related sanctions list entities, ships, and individuals allegedly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for reportedly providing Syria with oil worth tens of millions of dollars in breach of US sanctions.
“Treasury’s action against this sprawling petroleum network makes it explicitly clear that those purchasing Iranian oil are directly supporting Iran’s militants and terrorist arm, the IRGC-Qods Force”, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
The Treasury Department explained that the complex network of intermediaries enables the IRGC-QF to obfuscate its involvement in selling Iranian oil.
“The IRGC-QF also relies heavily on Hezbollah officials and front companies to broker associated contracts”, the Treasury said in a release. “OFAC also is issuing a new shipping advisory to the maritime community warning of these types of schemes and the sanctions risks associated with blocked persons”.
The Treasury Department noted that this spring alone the network employed more than a dozen vessels to transport nearly 10 million barrels of crude oil, predominantly to the Syrian government, that sold for more than half a billion dollars.
The network also sold nearly four million barrels of condensate and hundreds of thousands of barrels in gas oil, bringing in another quarter-billion dollars, it said.
10 individuals, 16 entities, and 11 vessels have been added to the sanctions list.
“The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) took action against a large shipping network that is directed by and financially supports the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and its terrorist proxy Hizballah”, the release said. “Over the past year, the IRGC-QF has moved oil worth hundreds of millions of dollars or more through this network for the benefit of the brutal [Syrian President Bashar] Assad regime, Hizballah, and other illicit actors”.
More Sanctions on Iran Coming
The US will impose more sanctions on Iran and is not looking to grant any exceptions or waivers during its maximum pressure campaign, US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook stated.
“We did sanctions today. There will be more sanctions coming. We can’t make it any more clear that we are committed to this campaign of maximum pressure and we are not looking to grant any exceptions or waivers”, Brian Hook said.
Hook continued by saying that there has been no concrete proposal from the US’ European partners to extend a credit line to Iran.
“There is no concrete proposal, we have no idea if there will be one, there is no proposal so we’re not going to comment on something that doesn’t exist”, Hook said when asked if the United States would support a French or European proposal to grant Iran a line of credit.
According to multiple media reports, France is proposing a $15 billion credit line for Tehran in an attempt to save the nuclear deal.
Reward for Info to Disrupt IRGC’s Financial Mechanisms
In the meantime, the US State Department has offered a $15 million reward for information leading to the disruption of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ financial mechanisms.
“The US Department of State’s Rewards for Justice (RFJ) is offering a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the disruption of the financial mechanisms of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its branches, including the IRGC-Qods Force (IRGC-QF). This includes seeking information on the IRGC’s illicit oil sales, including via oil tankers like the Adrian Darya”, the note said.
The new sanctions come just a day after the US government sanctioned Iran’s space agency and two research centres for activities linked to Tehran’s ballistic missile programme.
For months, the United States has been stepping up its sanctions on Iran as part of its “maximum pressure” campaign, which aims to force the Islamic Republic to renegotiate the landmark 2015 international nuclear deal. Tehran increased uranium enrichment activities in early August just over a year after the Trump administration exited the accord.”

Johnson faces questions by MPs in the aftermath of Tuesday’s vote, where MPs voted to take control of the parliamentary agenda, to pass legislation aimed at preventing a no-deal Brexit.
Tory rebels and opposition MPs united to defeat the government by a majority of 27. The 328 – 301 result, with 21 Tory MPs crossing the line, is widely considered to be a major defeat for Johnson.

Ex-candidate says Liberals knew about controversial posts before ouster
A recently ousted Liberal candidate says the party knew about his controversial social media posts well before he was turfed as the nominee in a Montreal riding.
Hassan Guillet told reporters today he met officials with the federal party on Aug. 8 to discuss the old posts. He says the Liberals were convinced he was neither racist not anti-Semitic.
But they revoked his nomination in the Saint-Leonard-Saint-Michel riding last Friday after a Jewish advocacy group unearthed the series of old statements he made on social media that were critical of Israel and U.S. foreign policy.
He says he and the Liberals had already discussed an action plan that involved outreach to the Jewish community.
Guillet says that action plan was scheduled to be set in motion the day he was sacked.
He added his posts were public, and the party knew or should have known about them when they vetted him in 2017.
The former imam says he wants to run in October’s federal election as a Liberal, but doesn’t rule out running for another party or as an Independent if he’s not reinstated.

B’nai Brith, Conservatives allege Hassan Guillet posted anti-Semitic comments online
Ousted Liberal candidate Hassan Guillet admits to posting online about a Hamas-aligned activist, but says the party was well aware of his comments and were even working on a public relations plan before they withdrew his nomination.
Last week, the Liberal Party dumped Guillet as a candidate in Quebec after a Jewish human rights group accused him of making a number of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel statements.
In a statement posted to its website Friday, B’nai Brith Canada said Guillett praised a Hamas-aligned activist, Raed Salah, and had a history of making anti-Semitic comments on social media. The group said it reached out to the Liberal Party more than a week ago to make it aware of their allegations against him.
The Conservative Party also called for his withdrawal.
Later that day, the Liberal Party said Guillet’s “insensitive comments” don’t align with the party’s values and revoked his candidacy in the riding of Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel.
Guillet held a press conference in the riding on Wednesday, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with supporters. He said the party was aware of the contents of his Facebook page since at least Aug. 8 and already had discussed an action plan that involved reaching out to the Jewish community.
Guillet, a member of the Council of Quebec Imams who gained national attention after delivering a speech in Quebec City honouring victims of the Quebec mosque shooting, said he did congratulate Salah after he was released from prison but insisted he wasn’t aware of his background.
Liberals say decision is final
“The party either knew or should have known what it contained. Why, then, if these words were so problematic, why was my candidacy … accepted?” he said. “One is entitled to ask the question, was it incompetence or bad faith?
“I am not anti-Semitic. On the contrary, I campaigned and I will always campaign against all forms of racism, including Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.”
Guillet said a member of the Liberal Party approached him Friday and said he could resign for personal reasons — or the party would withdraw its support.
The Liberal Party isn’t changing its mind.
“Following an internal review, the Liberal Party of Canada took the appropriate steps to remove Mr. Guillet as the Liberal candidate for the riding of Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel. That decision is final,” said party spokesperson Parker Lund in an email Wednesday.
Neither is B’nai Brith Canada.
“Today’s press conference only confirms our position that Hassan Guillet is not fit to carry the Liberal Party banner,” said Michael Mostyn, the group’s chief executive officer.
“We are satisfied with our role in exposing his anti-Semitic statements, and disappointed that he spurned an opportunity to retract them.”

A policeman, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the general feeling among officers was a concern that the Democratic Party (PD) would work against the interests of police once they come to power, Il Giornale reports.
“The feelings are conflicting because everyone has his own political ideas. But in general, many are worried that now those who are against the police will return to power,” the officer said.

The fears come after Mr Salvini passed a number of pro-police policies as part of his second migration and security decree, policies that were praised by police and police unions in June.
The decree included measures aimed at preventing violence against officers by increasing penalties for their attackers at demonstrations, sports events, or concerts.
Democratic Party leader Nicola Zingaretti has also made it clear that he wants to scrap the anti-mass migration policies in the decrees and reopen Italy’s ports to migrant transport NGOs.”

Do “facts” exist anymore? Or are we all living in alternative realities, where we everyone has their own set of facts?
It sounds silly, but it’s all too real.
Just days after President Trump moved into the White House in 2017, top aide Kellyanne Conway kicked off the whole game. During a “Meet the Press” appearance, she was asked about the size of the crowd at the inauguration — yes, that was an actual news story — and she said then-press secretary Sean Spicer “gave alternative facts” to dispute claims that there was a paltry crowd.
In a fantastic twist you couldn’t have made up, “journalist” Dan Rather blasted Conway (yes, the guy who used “alternative facts” when he claimed former President George W. Bush never served in the Texas Air National Guard and got booted from his CBS News anchor chair).
It’s all gone downhill since then.
Now, “facts” have become fungible. Every day, both side cite “facts” — often diametrically opposed “facts” — to support their arguments. Fact-checkers swing into action, with liberal sites backing Democrats’ “facts” and conservative sites validating Republicans’ “facts.”

Greg Craig was indicted by a federal grand jury in April on charges stemming from Mueller’s probe related to work he did for Ukraine in 2012.
Craig, 74, served as legal counsel for Obama from 2009 to 2010 and worked as senior legal counsel to Bill Clinton during his impeachment.
Craig was a partner in the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, which entered into a multi-million dollar settlement with the DOJ over its work in Ukraine.
