Somalia hotel attack: Briton, Americans and Canadian among 26 killed in Kismayo (express, Jul 13, 2019)

“AT LEAST one British person has died along with 25 others after a hotel attack in Somalia.
A suicide bomber drove a car containing explosives into the Asasey hotel in the port of Kismayo while the elections were being discussed, before gunmen then stormed the building. Kenyans, Americans, and Tanzanians are also among the dead, Jubbaland region’s president Mohamed said today. He added at least 56 people were injured, including two Chinese citizens.
He said: “Among the dead was also a Jubbaland presidential candidate named Shuuriye.
“Four militants attacked the hotel. One of them was the suicide car bomber, two were shot dead and one was captured alive by Jubbaland security forces.”
At least two journalists and a U.N. agency staff member were also reported to have been killed.
Islamist group al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.
Police said earlier all the attackers had been killed.
The Somalia office of the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration also said on Twitter one of its local staff members, Abdifatah Mohamed, was among those killed.
SADO Somalia, a local non-governmental organisation, wrote on Twitter its executive director Abdullahi Isse Abdulle had been killed.
A journalists’ group had confirmed on Friday that two journalists were among the dead, inclding Somali-Canadian journalist Hodan Naleyah, the founder of Integration TV, and Mohamed Sahal Omar, reporter of SBC TV in Kismayu.
Jubbaland president Mohamed said Jama Fariid, Naleyah’s husband, had also been killed.
Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, general secretary of the Federation of Somali Journalists, said in a statement: “We are saddened and outraged by this loss of life, and condemn in the strongest possible terms this appalling massacre.”
Kismayu is the commercial capital of Jubbaland, a region of southern Somalia still partly controlled by al Shabaab.
Al Shabaab remains a major security threat.
Their fighters regularly carry out bombings in Somalia and neighbouring Kenya, whose troops form part of the African Union-mandated peacekeeping force that helps defend the Somali government.”

“Italian deputy prime minister and minister of the interior Matteo Salvini has blamed left-wing extremists after being sent an envelope containing a bullet in the latest death threat against the League leader.
The envelope, which contained a .22 calibre bullet, was discovered at the centre of the Italian Post Office in Sesto Fiorentino earlier this week and was addressed to “Minister Duce Matteo Salvini” — a reference to the title used by the late fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, Il Giornale reports.
After the discovery of the envelope, the Carabinieri were called to the post office centre where a bomb squad conducted an investigation, and the state police say they have also begun an investigation to trace the identity of the person who sent the envelope.
“There have been over 100 threats of violence and death against me since I became a minister,” Salvini said in reaction to the incident.
“Evidently the words of hatred of certain leftists convince certain sick minds, but they do not frighten me,” Salvini added.
“Indeed, they give me even more strength and desire to fight criminals of all kinds.”
League (Lega) senator Roberto Calderoli said the death threats against Salvini were not stunts but were serious and compared them to death threats received by former Italian prime minister Aldo Moro, who was assassinated by the far-left Red Brigades in 1978 after being kidnapped.
Calderoli added that those on the left must condemn the incident and that death threats must be stopped before they turn into political murders.
The threat is just the latest against Salvini from the left. Last year, a group of far-left extremist students in Bologna put up posters of Salvini’s face with a target over it advocating for the assassination of the interior minister with the caption: “Assassin. Take aim at this.”
More mainstream leftist groups, like the L’Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d’Italia (ANPI/National Association of the Italian Partisans), have also called for “civil disobedience” against Salvini over his security and migration policies.”

“Five African migrants have been arrested in Rome this week after turning a local church into a headquarters for trafficking and stockpiling large amounts of heroin.
The five young migrant men, four of whom were from Gambia and the other from Mali, used the church in Rome’s Torre Angela area on the Via delle Amazzoni as a place to store and sell drugs after seeing a large number of mostly Nigerian worshippers visited the church on weekends, Il Giornale reports.
Italian police officers raided the church this week and as they did so, the members of the drug gang attempted to hide around two pounds of heroin while other members kicked and punched the officers trying to get into the building.
Following a brief scuffle with the migrants, the officers were able to subdue them and found two of the gang members in the toilet of the church where they were attempting to hide some of the heroin they had been selling.
A judge is holding all of the young men in custody, and they will also face charges of resisting arrest and assaulting police.
Migrant drug traffickers have been involved in several high profile cases in Italy in the last few years, including the brutal murders of Italian teens Pamela Mastropietro and Desirée Mariottini.
Italian populist deputy prime minister and minister of the interior Matteo Salvini has been vocal in his stance against migrant drug dealers, often advocating for their swift deportation from the country.
In April, following the arrest of a Pakistani heroin dealer, Mr Salvini wrote: “A Pakistani ‘asylum-seeker’ has been arrested, caught in Pesaro by the police with 180 doses of heroin! DISGUSTING! All-out war on death dealers! #zerotolerance, get these delinquents OUT of Italy!!!””

Stalled Idlib campaign shows limits of Syrian, Russian power (abcnews, Jul 13, 2019)

“Two months of intensive airstrikes by Syrian government forces and their Russian allies, coupled with a fierce ground assault on rebel-controlled Idlib province, have killed hundreds of people and caused massive displacement while achieving little to no gain for President Bashar Assad.
Despite the heavy bombardment, Assad’s troops have been unable to make any significant advances against al-Qaida-linked militants and other jihadi groups who dominate Idlib province, the last significant area held by opposition forces. Militant attacks have killed an average of more than a dozen soldiers and allied militiamen a day in recent weeks.
The struggling campaign underscores the limits of Syria’s and Russia’s airpower and inability to achieve a definitive victory in the country’s long-running civil war, now in its eighth year.
With crucial military assistance from Russia and Iran, Syrian troops have in the past few years recovered most other opposition-held parts of the country with crushing offensives and long-running sieges. In each of those places, rebels either surrendered or were forcibly exiled to Idlib, where they are now cornered with nowhere left to go. Bitter and desperate, they can only fight to the end. Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the leader of the main al-Qaida-linked group in the region, has called on every able person to “perform his religious duty” and join the fight.
Sam Heller, a Syria expert with the International Crisis Group who closely follows the situation in the rebel-controlled area, said, “Idlib’s armed opposition may not be able to win an open battle for the northwest, but they can make a Syrian military victory terribly costly, maybe intolerably so.”
Politically, Idlib reflects the tug of war among international players supporting opposing sides of Syria’s conflict. A cease-fire brokered last September by Russia, a key ally of Assad, and Turkey, which supports the rebels, collapsed on April 30 when the government began its offensive following months of violations by both sides. Turkey, which hosts 3 million Syrian refugees, fears a full-blown government offensive would cause a new wave of displaced people heading toward its border, but it has been unable — or some say, unwilling — to control the rebels in Idlib that it supports.
Crucially, Iran-backed fighters, including members of Lebanon’s Hezbollah group whose participation has been key in previous battles, have not joined fight for Idlib, deeming the region a low priority, unlike more strategic areas bordering Iraq and Lebanon. Even Russia hasn’t thrown all its weight into the fray and has continued to talk to Turkey about ways to reinstate the cease-fire.
Rather than a full-blown offensive to recover the province, which is packed with 3 million people, Assad’s government has for now restricted its assault to the edges of the province with the aim of reopening key highways crossing through rebel-held areas. But even that has proved futile as the rebels fight back aggressively.
Answering questions on why his group has not taken part in the offensive, the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah said the battle for the rebel enclave is not one to liberate it, but is about changing the lines of battle. “The Syrians have not asked us to join,” Hassan Nasrallah said late Friday.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, 2,443 people have been killed since April 30. They include 629 civilians, among them 159 children. The dead also include 869 pro-government fighters and troops as well as 945 insurgents, according to the Observatory. Many more have been wounded and many villages destroyed, with the United Nations saying the fighting has displaced more than 330,000 from their homes. Many of them now live in overcrowded tents near the border with Turkey.
Spearheading the offensive on Idlib and northern parts of the central province of Hama is the government’s elite Tiger Force led by Brig. Gen. Suheil al-Hassan, a Russian-backed Syrian officer who took credit for some of the biggest government victories in the eight-year conflict.
But he has not succeeded in breaking Idlib’s defenses and remains deadlocked. According to opposition activists, elite forces from the Republican Guards and the Fourth Division led by Assad’s younger brother, Maher, have recently started taking part in the offensive.
Opposition activists say government forces and their Russian allies have been targeting schools and medical centers, reportedly killing 10 medical staff since the offensive began, to make it difficult for the local population to stay. The tactic has been used by government troops elsewhere in Syria. Airstrikes have also targeted paramedics, killing four ambulance workers in recent weeks, activists say.
The Idlib offensive began with government forces capturing more than a dozen villages, including Qalaat al-Madiq and Kfar Nabudah, which are considered the militants’ first line of defense of Idlib. Since then, Kfar Nabudah has changed hands several times. Insurgents later took government forces by surprise by launching an offensive and opening another front, in which they succeeded in capturing the villages of Madraset al-Dahra, Tel Milh and Jubain. Repeated government attacks to retake the area were unsuccessful.
Mohammed al-Ali, a journalist based in Idlib province, said that two months into the offensive the government now only controls the village of Qassabiyeh in Idlib as well as some dozen villages in northern Hama province and the town of Qalaat al-Madiq.
Al-Ali said one of the insurgents’ biggest successes was opening the new front, in which they cut a main road linking the central city of Hama with government-held villages on the edge of Idlib.
“The rebels’ steadfastness and regime’s heavy losses made them fail to achieve advances similar to those they did at the start,” he said of the government offensive. He said anti-tank missiles were key in slowing the regime’s offensive.
The battle could last for months and claim more lives unless Turkey, Iran and Russia reach a new deal for the region similar to last year’s cease-fire. The faltering offensive could encourage Russia to reach such a deal with Turkey.
Turkey’s presidential spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said Ankara is planning to host a summit between the leaders of the three nations in August to discuss Syria, mainly Idlib.
“The Syrian military’s inability so far to make more headway in Idlib does not mean it cannot ultimately achieve victory nationwide,” Heller, of Crisis Group, said. “It does show, however, that its military victory is contingent on politics that -are bigger than just Syria.””

Partial sight has been restored to six blind people via an implant that transmits video images directly to the brain.
Some vision was made possible – with the participants’ eyes bypassed – by a video camera attached to glasses which sent footage to electrodes implanted in the visual cortex of the brain.
University College London lecturer and Optegra Eye Hospital surgeon Alex Shortt said it was a significant development by specialists from Baylor Medical College in Texas and the University of California Los Angeles.
“Previously all attempts to create a bionic eye focused on implanting into the eye itself. It required you to have a working eye, a working optic nerve,” Shortt told the Daily Mail.
“By bypassing the eye completely you open the potential up to many, many more people.
“This is a complete paradigm shift for treating people with complete blindness. It is a real message of hope.”

Federal Prosecutors Accuse Jeffrey Epstein of Witness Tampering – Claim He Paid $350,000 to Potential Witnesses
Federal prosecutors argued on Friday that Jeffrey Epstein should be denied bail while he waits for his trial on sex trafficking charges because he is already tampering with potential witnesses.
Epstein’s lawyers argued to Clinton-appointed US District Judge Richard Berman on Thursday that he should be given bail and confined to his $77 million Manhattan mansion with an ankle bracelet.

From there on, it is like your soul leaves your body because you become so numb. Because you have absolutely no power or control over what is happening”, she revealed.
After the marriage, Nyla stayed in Pakistan for five weeks before returning to Scotland where she ended up running away from home two months later and, having spent about a year away from her family, to return to her parents and demand permission for a divorce.
According to Nyla, it took a few years for her parents to come to a decision, but in the end they granted her request as her family had “put love before religion” and “had worked through the difficult time”.
Afterwards, Nyla went on to move from her home to study at a university and, in her own words, has been “an independent Muslim woman ever since”.”

At present, trainees must pass national tests in literacy and numeracy before being awarded Qualified Teacher Status. At least 3,500 applicants – or about 10 per cent – have failed them every year since 2012.
Schools minister Nick Gibb wrote last year that the exams ‘reassure parents and schools leaders’ that teachers ‘can demonstrate a high standard of numeracy and literacy when they enter the classroom’.
However, training providers have long called for the tests to be scrapped. They say they already work with trainees to fill in any gaps in knowledge.
Initially, anyone who failed the tests three times was locked out of training for two years before he or she could retake them – but this limit was removed last February. The Government is now expected to scrap the tests, with training providers allowed to use their own methods to measure skills. This could involve coursework or practical assessments.
Professor Alan Smithers, director of the centre for education and employment research at the University of Buckingham, said: ‘They’re taking away a very important safety check. A national test is different from that led by providers who, to survive financially, are having to fill their places… they will be less likely to test as thoroughly.’

Fake News Covers for Migrant Crime Spree in Georgia, as Guatemalan Illegals Are Charged with Raping, Imprisoning Children
The fake news referred to the illegal immigrants as Guatemalans who are subject to ICE detainers.
The fake news recently issued reports containing many inaccuracies and misleading rhetoric about illegal immigrants from Honduras who were recently charged with rape, child molestation, false imprisonment, and sexual battery in the state of Georgia.
One report from the Marietta Daily Journal noted that accused perpetrator Baudilio Salomon Diaz Ambrocio, 17, was charged with one count rape, another count of aggravated child molestation, and another count of aggravated sexual battery. He was arrested on July 3 and is being detained in a Cobb County jail awaiting trial.
What they failed to mention is that Ambrocio is an illegal immigrant, the type of person who is commonly referred to as a DREAMer by globalists who want to flood the U.S. border with the refuse of the third-world.
The report referred to Ambrocio as a “Marietta teen” who is “the subject of an ICE detainer” due to being “born overseas in Guatemala.” This is patently false as Guatemala is located south of Mexico, not overseas.

In 2018, Sweden experienced a record number of lethal shootings, 306 in all. Forty-five people were killed and 135 injured nationwide, most deaths occurring in Region South, where Malmö is located. In March, the Swedish National Forensic Centre estimated that since 2012, the number of shootings classified as murder or attempted murder has increased by almost 100 percent. The Centre also found that the most popular weapon used in the shootings is the Kalashnikov assault rifle. “It is one of the world’s most manufactured weapons and used in many wars,” said the Centre’s team manager, Mikael Högfors. “When they are no longer needed… they are smuggled into Sweden”.
In the first six months of 2018, according to the police, almost every other shooting took place in a “vulnerable area”, also known as no-go zones. In 2017, a Swedish police report, “Utsatta områden 2017” (“Vulnerable Areas 2017”) disclosed that there are 61 such areas in Sweden. They encompass 200 criminal networks, consisting of an estimated 5,000 criminals. Most of the inhabitants are non-Western immigrants and their descendants.

Problems for the Maui Fire Department and County arose when two fires broke out in Maui.
The first fire in South Maui blackened more than 12,000 acres of fallow former sugar cane lands and brush. It began on Thursday around 10:40 a.m.
The fire was reported 60 percent contained as of 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12.
“It was so chaotic last night,” said Maui Police Asst. Chief Victor Ramos in a Friday press conference that gave updates on the wildfire.

“The law is the latest step in the development of Islamic finance in Morocco.
Sharia insurance, known as Takaful, is a growing industry in the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. Over the past four decades hundreds of Takaful companies have opened, proving insurance coverage for Muslims in accordance with Islamic law. Starting in 2017, Morocco began to pave the legal path for Takaful companies looking to establish themselves in the North African country.
The legislation still needs to pass through the 395-member House of Representatives in Rabat. Islamic banking professionals in Morocco told Reuters that once the law is enacted, insurance companies will then be able to launch Takaful subsidiaries.
Said Amaghdir, President of the Moroccan Association for Participatory Finance Professionals told Reuters that after the law has been passed, Islamic banks in Morocco will be able to offer life and general insurance policies.
Morocco’s efforts to strengthen Islamic finance may be relatively recent, but elsewhere in the Muslim world Takaful companies have been in operation for decades.
The first Takaful company, the Islamic Insurance Company of Sudan, was established in 1979.
In 1985, the Grand Council of Islamic Scholars in Saudia Arabia passed a resolution stating that conventional insurance is not acceptable from a Sharia point of view.
The industry continued to expand as Takaful companies sprung up around the Arabian peninsula. By the mid 1990s, seven companies were in operation in several Muslim countries including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.
By 2016 over 300 Takaful companies operated worldwide in an industry valued at over 33 billion dollars, according to a 2016 World Takaful Report.
However, the initial foundation for Sharia-compliant companies stretches back much earlier.
Islamic scholars first forbade conventional insurance over a century ago, citing passages in the Quran that outlawed practices such as gambling and usury.
Sharia insurance differs from conventional insurance primarily in that it operates on the basis of solidarity and mutual assistance. Muslim countries wanting to stay in accordance with Islamic law have chosen to enact legislation regulating the operation of Takaful companies.
While conventional insurance companies rely on each individual member paying a premium for coverage, members of Takaful companies all contribute financially to a fund to provide mutual assistance to anyone in need.
The practice of high premiums, interpreted as usury by most Islamic scholars, is also forbidden. As are uncertainty and gambling, which some scholars also allege are characteristics of conventional insurance coverage.
This unilateral contract allows members to retain a right to collect the surplus on funds they have contributed, should no insurance claims be made.
However, Amaghdi told Reuters in order for Sharia-compliant insurers to thrive, they still need access to capital markets.
Despite the growing number of Takaful companies, some Islamic scholars have questioned the legitimacy of the industry.
“We can make insurance a not-for-profit activity,” said Islamic economist Mohammad Najatuallah Siddiqui. “But it does not change the essential nature of what is being done.””
