This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

Sons of murdered mum attack her killer in court
Chaos erupts in an Ohio courtroom after two brothers lunged at a handcuffed man convicted of murdering their mother.
The melee took place at a sentencing hearing for the convicted murderer who shot and killed Elizabeth Pledger-Stewart.
One of the brothers leaped and initiated the attack as the sister was preparing to read a statement to the court. The other came around and managed to land some blows onto the convicted man, before a courtroom officer tased and handcuffed him.
The sentencing hearing was postponed and the convicted murderer was taken to a nearby hospital, local media reported.

Man Found In Stolen Vehicle – With Uranium, Rattlesnake, & Whiskey – During Oklahoma Traffic Stop
Police in Oklahoma stopped a vehicle that was reported as stolen on June 26 and found a rattlesnake, a canister of radioactive powdered uranium and an open bottle of Kentucky Deluxe whiskey, according to AP and KFOR.

“A Russian national accused of fighting for the ISIS militant group against Syrian government forces was arrested in Albania and will be extradited to Russia, Albanian police said on Friday.
Police said the 34-year-old man, identified as R.M., who was born in and a resident of Norilsk in Russia, entered Albania illegally after a court in Russia’s Chechen Republic ruled in April 2015 he should be arrested for being part of a terrorist group.
“In June 2013, this citizen left Russia for Syria, joined the illegal armed group named ‘ISIS’ and was an active participant in fighting against government forces in Syria,” a police statement said.
It added NATO member Albania’s anti-terror unit had spent several months locating and identifying the Russian national wanted by Interpol Moscow. Increasing numbers of Russian and Ukrainian citizens visit Albania during the summer holidays.”

“Hamza Yusuf, a prominent US-born Islamic scholar, is facing criticism for his decision to be part of a 10-member panel chosen by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to examine the role of human rights in US foreign policy.
Pompeo on Monday unveiled the “Commission on Unalienable Rights”, saying it was made up of human rights experts of “varied backgrounds and beliefs”, and that it has been tasked with reviewing “the role of human rights in American public policy”.
Critics of the commision have raised concerns of the panel after it appointed Harvard law professor Mary Ann Glandon, a former US ambassador to the Vatican, who led efforts against enshrining abortion as an international human right at the 1995 UN Women’s conference in Beijing.
Dr Usaama al Azami, a lecturer in Islamic Studies who studied at Princeton University in the US, said that Yusuf’s decision to work with the Trump administration was a “troubling development in Western Islam”.
“For one of the West’s most recognisable and once almost universally esteemed Islamic scholars to throw in his lot with the most venal and Islamophobic administration in American history will be viewed by many Muslims as an unforgivable lapse in judgement which will not easily be forgotten,” Azami told Middle East Eye.
“This is far worse than his advice to the Bush administration in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. That was when most Muslims voted Republican.”
“In the years since 9/11, the Republican Party has gradually transformed into an Islamophobic party par excellence, culminating in the presidency of Donald Trump who won the Republican nomination on the basis of Islamophobic race-baiting and unconstitutional demands for a Muslim registry and a Muslim travel ban.”
Criticism for supporting the UAE
Dr Walaa Qusaiy, a teaching fellow at the University of Birmingham, however, who specialises in neo-traditionalism in Islam and Hamza Yusuf’s teachings, said she was not surprised by his decision to join the panel.
She believes Yusuf’s close allegiance to Sheikh Abdullah Bin Bayyah, and role as vice president of the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim societies, a religious body that is bankrolled by the United Arab Emirates, has played a role in the type of stances he has taken over the years.
“Over the years, Hamza Yusuf has centralised the idea of stability and government as the central ideal and that Muslims should not politically engage but ensure that their hearts are clean. But when governments then use this narratives to affirm the supremacy of the state and regime then it becomes a problem,” Qusaiy told MEE.
“Yusuf’s religious and political role within the UAE has made him an international actor. He started to become that before his formal appointment as vice president and goes a long way in explaining his direction to ally himself with the political right inside America.”
Zaytuna college, which Yusuf co-founded, did not respond to requests for comment at the time of writing.
Last year, Yusuf was criticised by rights groups for describing the United Arab Emirates as a country that champions civil society and is “committed to tolerance”.
“For someone as influential as Sheikh Hamza Yusuf to call the UAE ‘tolerant’ contributes and gives credibility to the authorities’ carefully tailored, yet false image, as a progressive and rights respected state,” Hiba Zayadin, an assistant researcher at Human Rights Watch, told MEE.
In 2017, Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that the UAE was silencing individuals in the country for speaking up against human rights violations in the region since 2011.
“UAE residents who have spoken about human rights issues are at serious risk of arbitrary detention, imprisonment and torture,” HRW said at the time.”

“Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS) has launched a portal providing information it says promotes a correct understanding of human rights.
The SIS has said it will use the portal to challenge attempts at politicising human rights in Egypt and respond to suspicious organisations trying to exploit human rights issues, according to Asharq Al-Awsat.
Since Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi assumed power in 2014 Egypt has carried out sweeping human rights abuses aimed at silencing any opposition to the current regime.
The Arab Organisation for Human Rights has said that up to 3,185 civilians have been killed extrajudicially by Egyptian security forces since the July 2013 coup.
Egypt has handed out an unprecedented number of death sentences – over 2,500 since 2014, hundreds of them for political violence, according to Human Rights Watch.
In North Sinai the Egyptian Army has killed over 4,000 people including children and displaced thousands more, demolishing their homes without offering alternative accommodation.
Despite the fact that these rights abuses are widely documented the Egyptian government has attempted to discredit them.
In June the SIS said that “Human Rights Watch has routinely fabricated lies about the human rights situation in Egypt.”
It has said that the BBC “promotes the lies of the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group” and that Amnesty International’s statement on the torture of children in Egypt “is not based on tangible evidence and lacks accuracy.”
In March Egyptian authorities responded to a US State Department report on human rights saying it was “not objective.”
Earlier this year Al-Sisi defended his human rights record and said that Europe should not lecture the Arab world: “You are not going to teach us about humanity.”
“We have our own sense of humanity, values and ethics, and you have your own idea of humanity and ethics, and we respect it. Respect our values and ethics, as we do yours.””

“Kuwaiti security authorities had arrested a terrorist cell linked to the Muslim Brotherhood wanted in Egypt to serve jail sentences on terrorism-related charges, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.
Members of the group had fled from Egypt to Kuwait, but were arrested in different places in the country.
They admitted in preliminary investigations to have mounted terrorist attacks in different parts of Egypt before escaping to Kuwait, the ministry said, according to the official Kuwaiti news agency KUNA.
“Investigations are still under to determine who helped them to hide and covered them up and collaborators with them,” the ministry said.
“The Interior Ministry warns it will show no leniency towards anyone proven to have collaborated or linked to this cell or any terrorist organisations.”
The ministry vowed to “strike with an iron fist” against anyone trying to harm Kuwait’s security.
The group is made up of eight members, all of them Egyptian nationals, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai reported.
Egypt has experienced a spate of militant attacks since the army’s 2013 overthrow of president Mohammad Mursi, a senior Brotherhood official, following enormous street protests against his rule.

“This week, the Spanish Civil Guard dismantled a major drug trafficking crime ring. The network was smuggling hashish from Morocco to Spain by sea.
In total, 150 agents from several units took part in the bust, and six people were arrested. Three boats were also confiscated in the raid.
The crime ring had reportedly established a base near the Chafarinas Islands, three small islands located off the coast of Morocco, 3.3 km from the Moroccan village of Ras El Ma and 46 km southeast of Melilla. The base was used to supply drugs and fuel on the high seas to third-party vessels operating on the peninsula.
According to the Civil Guard, the system of keeping the drugs on boats provided the ring with greater security than keeping the drugs on the ground. The strategy has been dubbed a “Drug and Fuel Maritime Day Care.”
Recently, a variety of boats have been used to traffic drugs from Morocco to Spain. Last May, authorities found three tons of hashish on a luxury yacht near the coast of Malaga.”

“Nearly half a million non-EU citizens were denied entry into the EU countries in 2018, according to a Eurostat statement on Friday.
The statement said 471,000 non-EU citizens were refused entry into the EU at one of its external borders last year.
This was 7% higher than the numbers in 2017, it added.
“Around 602,000 non-EU citizens were found to be illegally present in one of the EU Member States,” the statement said.
It said the number of non-EU citizens issued with an order to leave an EU member state reached 478,000 persons.
“Some 198,000 non-EU citizens, following an order to leave, were returned to another country [including other EU Member States], of these 158,000 were returned outside the EU,” it added.”

“A documentary film exploring the dark underworld of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) and its role in the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt in Turkey was screened Thursday in New York.
‘The Network: Darkside of Gulenists’, which premiered at the Helen Mills Event Space and Theater in Manhattan, was created by the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC) in conjunction with Turkish international news channel TRT World within the scope of a project run by the Directorate of Communications of the Turkish Presidency.
The film — directed by renowned British journalist Andrew Wilson — analyzes the secret structures of the terrorist organization, its leader Fetullah Gulen and why Turkey is demanding that he be extradited to be held accountable for his role in the coup attempt.
Watching the movie were Turkey’s Consul General in New York, Alper Aktas, members of diplomatic missions and representatives of non-governmental organizations from the Turkish and American community as well as local and international participants.
Prior to its screening, Aktas gave a short speech about FETO, saying the terror group poses a danger not only to Turkey but is a great threat to all countries in which it operates.
Noting that the fight against FETO will continue with great determination, Aktas stressed that as Turks living in America, they have a responsibility to tell the truth about what happened in the country on July 15, 2016.
The documentary, which was shown with Turkish and English subtitles, will also be screened on Sunday in Paterson, New Jersey, which has a large population of Turks.
FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup, which martyred 251 people and injured nearly 2,200 others.”

“Sea-Watch3 skipper Carola Rackete on Friday filed a suit to close Interior Minister Matteo Salvini’s Facebook and Twitter accounts because they allegedly stoked hate against her and the Sicilian prosecutor who released her after she defied the minister’s closed-ports policy, Alessandra Vella.
In the suit, which attached rape threats against her from social media haters who allegedly responded to Salvini’s criticism, the 31-year-old German migrant rescue ship captain argued that far-right League leader Salvini, who called her “a rich Communist scamp who shops in Portofino”, spreads hatred and instigates people to commit crimes.
Salvini has dismissed claims, notably from 5-Star Movement (M5S) equal opportunities cabinet secretary Vincenzo Spadafora, that his comments on Rackete were sexist, saying he would have said the same things about a man.
He has called on Spadafora to resign “if he can’t stand being in government with dangerous male chauvinists and fascists”.
The anti-establishment M5S is the League’s partner in Italy’s populist government.
Spadafora stands by what he said and refuses to resign.
Salvini reacted to Rackete’s announced suit Thursday by saying “the German Communist, the one who rammed the finance guard patrol boat, has asked prosecutors to close my Facebook and Twitter pages.
“There’s no end to how ridiculous things can get. So can I use only Instagram now??” The city council of Paris on Friday said Rackete and fellow Sea-Watch3 captain Pia Klemp will receive its top prize, the Grand Vermeil Medal, for saving migrants at sea.
The council said the award symbolised “solidarity for the respect of human lives”.
It said the two charity operators were “still being prosecuted by Italian justice”. Rackete is under investigation for aiding and abetting illegal immigration.
Salvini said “it’s not a joke. This is someone who crushed a police boat and now those guilty are the police? Just wait and see if some magistrate isn’t going to probe the police now?
