North Korea at a Nuclear Crossroadsv
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: North Korea has found itself at a nuclear crossroads more than once, but the Trump-Pompeo-Bolton triumvirate significantly alters the current dynamic. The primary external forces acting on Pyongyang’s nuclear decision-making are China, Iran, and the US. The Americans could well prove effective against an aggressively antagonistic Iran.
Although this is not the first time North Korea finds itself at a nuclear crossroads, the present case is different. Notwithstanding some inconsistent remarks made recently by President Donald Trump and his NSA, John Bolton, the triumvirate formed by Trump, Bolton, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is a powerful integral, and one to give Kim Jong-un pause.
The February 2019 summit between Trump and Jong-un ended with no agreement, indicating real difficulty in making progress toward denuclearization of the north. There are at least three layers to the issue. First: what will be the price for Pyongyang’s agreement to comprehensive, complete denuclearization? Second: does North Korea really intend to implement such an agreement? And third: if it does not, will noncompliance be detected by intelligence communities and tackled effectively?

Persecution of Christians in the Middle East is now close to “genocide”, a UK-commissioned report just revealed. The same threat has also become critical for Christian communities in Africa.
Some say it began in Algeria in the 1990s, when 19 monks, bishops, nuns and other Catholics were killed during the civil war. Since then, in Nigeria, Christian faithful have been massacred in their churches; in Kenya, Christians have been killed in universities; in Libya, Christians have been beheaded on beaches; in Yemen, nuns have been assassinated and in Egypt, massive anti-Christian violence is prompting an exodus. It is the new African archipelago of persecution.
Distressingly, these Christians have been finding themselves in the blind spot of the West: they are “too Christian” to get the Left’s attention, but too far away for the Right. Africa’s Christians are orphans. They have no “allies”, John O’Sullivan writes.
Christian families recently fled the city of Diffa, in Niger, after Boko Haram delivered the message: “You have three days to go or you will be killed!”. “There is no Christian anymore in this town”, someone reported to the non-governmental organization, the Barnabas Fund. The town, Arbinda, is in Burkina Faso. Numbers are telling: 82 pastors, 1,145 Christians and 151 households have fled from violence in the Muslim-majority nation. Just in the last few weeks, several of the Christian faithful and clergy have been murdered. Jihadists killed six Christians in a Catholic church in the town of Dablo. A pastor was murdered in an attack in Silgadji, Catholic parades have been targeted.

The ‘Cat-And-Mouse’ World of the Ayatollah

A few weeks ago, the Islamic Republic’s “Supreme Guide” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described his regime’s decades-long conflict with the United States as a real-life re-enactment of the Tom and Jerry cartoons from Hollywood, in which a crafty little mouse provokes the clumsy big cat into all manner of threatening gestures but always ends up emerging safe and sound.
In Khamenei’s bizarre depiction, the Islamic Republic is the little mouse (Jerry) and the United States the big cat (Tom). Why should Khamenei make a conflict that has done so much damage to Iran as a nation the subject of so frivolous a depiction is something beyond the scope of this article.
No serious political leader would see a conflict with an adversary as no more than a childish game. But, we never accused the Ayatollah of being a serious leader. Like Jerry, he is only interested in attracting attention by provocation and then dodging punishment, prolonging the life of his regime by a few more minutes, hours or even years. Khamenei does not see the difference between the behavior of a cartoon mouse and a nation of 85 million real human beings. Jerry can be as provocative and playful as he wants because he does not need a job, a school, a hospital, a roof above his head, some food (cheese?) on his table, and a rule-based system to protect his rights and dignity. Like all ideologues, fantasist to a fault, Khamenei has little time for reality.

Rabat: A blaze ripped through a migrant camp in the Moroccan city of Casablanca on Sunday leaving “many injured”, authorities and camp residents said.
Illegal but tolerated by authorities, the Oulad Ziane camp near the coastal city’s main bus station has for years been home to hundreds of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.
It is the largest and one of the last informal camps left in the kingdom, following a push by authorities to dismantle others.
“The camp burned down, and many injured were hospitalised,” said Camara Lassine, a community leader in the camp.
“There was a fight between a hundred migrants over a stolen phone, and one of them started the fire and called the police,” he said.
“We don’t know if we’ll be allowed to return.”
Authorities said the fire broke out amid “plastic tents and debris” but was later brought under control without causing any deaths.
Blighted by a poor hygiene and violence, Oulad Ziane camp was hit by four fires last year.
A steady flow of sub-Saharan migrants enter Morocco each year aiming to reach Europe by sea or via the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla at the kingdom’s northern tip.
But many eventually settle in Morocco, which has conducted two campaigns since 2014 granting residency to 50,000 illegal immigrants, according to authorities.

“Dozens of Lebanese and Jordanian nationals working in an oil field in Kazakhstan were injured on Saturday after a brawl broke out between them and local Kazakh workers.
The Arab engineers, working at Consolidated Contractors construction company, were heavily beaten on site on Saturday over allegations that one of the Lebanese workers shared a picture of himself with a female Kazakh employee, that the local employees deemed offensive.
Videos shared on social media showed men with bloodied faces lying on the ground being kicked.
One of the videos showed a man being battered over the head with a garbage can.
Local media reported that at least 50 Arab employees, including Lebanese and Jordanians were injured in the attack.
The army arrived on scene to break up the fight, local media added.
Kazakh Defence Minister Nurlan Ermekbaev said that the men taken to the hospital sustained only minor injuries and that they had all been discharged, the state-run National News Agency reported.
A statement from the company, posted on the Kazakhstani embassy’s Facebook page, said that some 30 employees received medical treatment due to injuries resulting from the assault, which stemmed from a “personal dispute” between two employees, noting that “none are in a life-threatening condition”.
Work at the site has been temporarily suspended, the company added.
The Lebanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement late on Saturday condemning the attack and said that it was following up with relevant authorities to ensure the safe return of Lebanese workers.
Jordan said it was investigating the incident with relevant authorities in Kazakhstan.”

“In line with the ongoing crackdown on proscribed groups, four leaders of the Jamat ud Dawa (JuD) and eight belonging to Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) have been found guilty of terror financing by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Punjab.
A CTD spokesperson said that four local leaders of JuD were convicted by Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs). They are identified as Asghar Ali, Junaid Irshad, Ijaz Ahmad and Abdul Khaliq. They have been awarded prison terms of two years along with fines each.
While eight leaders of the JeM include Iftikhar Ahmad, Muhammad Ajmal, Bilal Makki, Abrar Ahmad, Irfan Ahmad, Hafeezullah, Mazhar Nawaz and Abdul Latif. They were handed prison terms of up to five years each.
The spokesperson added that no one would be allowed to finance terrorism with further prosecutions to follow.”
