Jewish Diaspora in Sweden’s Third Largest City Facing Extinction Amid Growing Anti-Semitism (sputniknews, Jun 24, 2019)

“The Jewish diaspora in “Sweden’s most multicultural city” has shrunk dramatically over the past several decades, dwindling to only 387 members from about 2,500 in the 1970s.
Malmö’s Jewish community is about to disappear from the city in the very near future if nothing is done about the spread of anti-Semitism in the city, the Jewish community has written to Malmö City Hall.
In recent decades, Malmö has been one of the hardest hit by the rise of anti-Semitism, ranging from hateful messages to attacks on synagogues and even stabbings. This has prompted serious measures such as surveillance cameras and extra policing.
The Jewish congregation itself has called the situation “critical”, because its numbers have more than halved in the past two decades alone. In 1999, there were 842 members. In 2009 it was 610 and this year it is 387 members. In the early 1970s, the congregation still had 2,500 members.
“The Jewish congregation will soon disappear entirely if nothing is done drastically. Malmö is already a no-go zone for Jews around the world. When Malmö is mentioned in the media around the world, far too often it happens in connection with anti-Semitism. A Google search for ‘anti-Semitism Malmö’ yields 215,000 results. Unfortunately, current initiatives are not enough”, the congregation wrote, as quoted by the news outlet Nyheter Idag.
Svante Lundgren, associate professor of theology at Lund University’s Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, has attributed the hatred of Jews in Malmö to a long religious conflict in the Middle East, exacerbated by the fact that Malmö has received a large number of immigrants from the Middle East.
“In many Middle Eastern countries, there is strong anti-Semitism, and hence there are people who grow up with it, not just hate against Israel but against all Jews. There is a lot of research on this and what you see then is that some people from the Middle East bring along strongly anti-Semitic views from their home country”, Lundgren told the Expressen tabloid daily.
In its action plan, the congregation describes a picture of constant threats.
“In recent years, the threats and risks have increased dramatically, and many believe that it is only a matter of time before a more serious incident will occur”, the Jewish congregation said.
Before the Swedish state joined in and took care of the policing costs three years ago, the congregation had to bear the costs itself. Alarm agreements still set the congregation back SEK 100,000 ($106,000) per year. According to the action plan, almost no insurance companies are willing to insure the Malmö synagogue.
“Our insurance has more than doubled compared to what we paid a few years ago. Today, it amounts to almost SEK 400,000 [almost $425,000] per year. There is only one insurance company that today is still willing to insure the Malmö synagogue”, the Jewish congregation stressed.
Malmö, which is often hailed as Sweden’s most multicultural city due to the fact that 140 languages are spoken there, is on its way to becoming a “minority majority” area. While official statistics put the share of immigrants at over 45 percent of the population in 2018, individual studies estimated that immigrants already outnumbered Swedes at some point in the 2010s. Many of the newcomers belong to the Muslim community, such as Iraqis, Iranians, Bosnians, Turks, and Kurds.
Sweden’s Jewish diaspora currently numbers some 20,000 people and is still one of Europe’s largest. Yiddish is listed as one of Sweden’s official minority languages.”

A military expert says China is trying to bankrupt America with endless wars in the Middle East. According to Senior Fellow Robert Spalding of the Hudson Institute, China is waging an economic war on the U.S. by supporting America’s enemies such as Iran and North Korea.

Police broke up a protest of environmentalists near Rommeskirchen on Monday. Footage shows activists being removed from a railway vehicle after offering passive resistance. They were part of a larger group protesting near the Neurath Power Station over the weekend.

European Court Asks Italy for Information on Vessel Filled with Rescued Migrants
ROME – The European Court of Human Rights has asked Italy to provide information on the case of Sea Watch 3, a ship off the island of Lampedusa carrying rescued migrants who Italy has refused to allow to disembark. Italy’s interior minister has said he will hold the Netherlands and the European Union “responsible” for the fate of the 36 migrants on board.
Italy has refused to allow the Sea Watch 3 into its territorial waters and the port of the southern island of Lampedusa. Only a small group of migrants on board the ship, including two pregnant women, were allowed to disembark.
The Dutch-flagged vessel, representing an German organization that rescues migrants at sea, picked up the migrants from an inflatable raft in the Mediterranean 12 days ago. The crew has refused to return them to Libya, saying Tripoli is not a safe port.
Deteriorating situation
The spokeswoman of Sea Watch Italy, Giorgia Linardi said the situation on board the Sea Watch 3 is deteriorating every day and described the Italian authorities’ treatment of these migrants as “inhumane and degrading.”
“The partial disembarkation of ten people, now almost a week ago, destabilized even further the situation on board. The remaining people are asking why they do not have a right to disembark,” said Linardi.
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has now requested the Italian government and Sea Watch provide it with information about the ship, in order to allow the migrants to disembark in Italy.
Linardi said single individuals on board asked the European Court to intervene with so that urgent provisional measures are adopted to guarantee their rights.
Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has been operating a “closed ports” policy in Italy. He said he will hold the Netherlands and the European Union responsible for the fate of the migrants, adding that he has written to his counterpart in the Netherlands.
Salvini said vessels that are illegal will not come to Italy. He said reception is guaranteed for those truly fleeing war, adding that his figures indicate only small percentage of recent arrivals were fleeing conflict.
Migrant arrivals in Italy have dropped significantly since Salvini took office last year, down more than 80 percent in 2018, and because of this the interior minister’s popularity has soared.
The Italian government has imposed a policy that effectively stops NGO ships with rescued migrants from entering Italian waters.
Vessels that fail to respect the ban face fines of up to $56,000.

UN Agencies Urge Italy to Let Migrants Get off Rescue Boat
GENEVA – The U.N. migration and refugee agencies on Friday urged Italy’s government to let 43 migrants from Libya disembark from a boat that had rescued them in the Mediterranean Sea.
Rome hasn’t let the migrants off the Sea Watch 3 onto the Italian island of Lampedusa since the June 12 rescue.
International Organization for Migration spokesman Joel Millman said Libya’s capital had “offered its port to the Sea Watch. The Italian government said they should go to Tripoli.”
UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch said “the country in which territory this boat is, they have the obligation to let these people disembark,” adding “no one should be returned back” to war-torn Libya.
“These desperate people need to disembark,” Baloch said. “This is an obligation under international law.”

At the outset of the meeting, Al Busaidiyah welcomed the Canadian official and his delegation, stressing the importance of the visit in opening new fields of cooperation between the Sultanate and Canada particularly higher education. The minister presented a brief about higher education in the Sultanate and the importance accorded by the ministry to the international scholarship programme.
Reviewing the efforts made by the government to diversify specialisations, Al Busaidiyah briefed the delegation about the Al Ajyal College project and the University of Oman project. She said the government is keen on encouraging vocational and crafts education as well as entrepreneurship culture and linking them to college education. The minister pointed out to the possibility to start cooperation with the Canadian side in the entrepreneurship and crafts fields. On his side, the Canadian official presented an overview of the higher education in Canada and its leading universities which are among the world’s best universities.
Charest gave a brief of the political stability his country enjoys and the good relations it shares with other countries as well as the Canadian people’s openness to other societies, all that contributed to the promotion of Canada as a good choice for international students. SALALAH, June 24 – In a boost to training and employment to Omani nationals, Canadian company SNC-Lavalin, which is handling Salalah Methanol’s Ammonia Project, signed an agreement with Oman Institute of Technology for 25 general diploma holders and offered them training in the fields of technical and occupational health for six months. The signatories to the agreement were Chris Warlow, Executive Director of the Oil and Gas Division of SNC-Lavalin in the Gulf region, and Ali bin Adam al Hashemi, CEO of the Oman Institute of Technology.
The agreement signing event was held in presence of Awad bin Hassan al Shanfari, CEO of Salalah Methanol, and Hamad al Hashemi, Director of Salalah Ammonia Project. Till worker Brian Leach, 54, was let go by the supermarket after seven colleagues complained that the comments in the skit were anti-Islamic.
Following the complaint, the father-of-one deleted the post from May and wrote an apology to his bosses and colleagues.
But Mr Leach, from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, was fired for gross misconduct on Wednesday after five years in the job for breaching the company’s social media policy.
Mr Leach announced the sacking on Facebook. He wrote: Unfortunately, I have today been dismissed from Asda. Some of my colleagues took offence to the Billy Connelly, (sic), thoughts on religion, that I posted early May.

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen says he wants Canada to accept more refugees as economic immigrants
OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen says he would like to see Canada welcome more refugees than it currently accepts and believes more of them should be able to enter through economic immigration programs.
Speaking to participants in a conference marking World Refugee Day on Thursday, Hussen acknowledged that Canada cannot resettle every refugee in the world. After all, a United Nations report issued this week estimated the number of refugees worldwide at nearly 26 million.
But as someone who arrived in Canada as a refugee himself, Hussen spoke with passion about the need for Canada to do more.
“My wish is that we continue to increase levels in our immigration system for refugees. I’m very open to saying that, and I will do whatever I can, in whatever position I am in, to continue to push for higher refugee numbers every single year.”
One way to dramatically increase those levels would be to open up economic immigration streams to refugees in addition to humanitarian programs, Hussen said.
One refugee has already arrived in Canada this way, thanks to a pilot program launched last year that aims to move skilled refugees in Kenya and the Middle East through economic streams like the provincial-nominee program.
Mohammed Hakmi was living in Lebanon after fleeing his home country of Syria before being recruited to work for a tech firm in Kitchener-Waterloo earlier this year. This happened thanks to the pilot program being run by Talent Beyond Boundaries, a non-government organization that has partnered with the UN Refugee Agency to match refugees with employers in Canada and Australia.
Hussen said he would like to “massively” ramp up this pilot as a way to bring more refugees to Canada.
“Instead of thinking of refugees as people who just want resettlement and people who are passive recipients of aid, how about re-imagining refugees as people who have assets to contribute, who have talents and skills that we need in Canada?”
Canada accepted 28,100 refugees for permanent resettlement in 2018 — the highest number among all countries that resettled refugees from temporary locations abroad.
This year, that number is projected to rise to 29,950. It does not include asylum-seekers who land in Canada and gain protected status here.
But while Canada is being applauded for its efforts on refugee resettlement, migration experts and advocates are expressing concern about a global rise in rhetoric targeting refugees.
Earlier this week in the House of Commons, Hussen said, he heard Conservatives shouting out of turn, calling the wave of irregular migrants who have been crossing into Canada by avoiding official border checkpoints “illegals” — a term he takes exception to.
“There’s a lot of fearmongering going on,” he said.
A group of human-rights organizations issued a joint letter to all political parties earlier this month saying they’re worried about how refugees and migrants in Canada might be characterized during the upcoming federal election campaign.
Amnesty International Canada, the Canadian Council for Refugees, the Canadian Council of Churches and the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers are calling on politicians of all parties to engage in more thoughtful discussion on the complex issues related to migration.
“In many countries around the world, especially during election campaigns, refugees and migrants have been talked about in ways that insult their dignity and humanity, contribute to xenophobia and racism, and are frequently grounded in distortion and misinformation,” the letter states.
“We know Canadians value compassion, equality and safety for all. In the upcoming federal election campaign, we call on you to demonstrate your leadership by respecting these principles and speaking out when they are undermined by others.”
Hussen says he believes a key way to stop negative attitudes toward refugees is to recognize them as valuable individuals who can help expand Canada’s economy, rather than stereotyping them as a drain on resources.
“Everywhere you go in Canada there’s a severe labour market shortage in all kinds of industries — low-skilled, intermediate-skilled and high-skilled — despite the increase in immigration levels that we have put in place,” he said.
“How can we include refugees in that conversation? I think that’s up to government and all of the stakeholders in this discussion who care about refugee issues … it’s important to constantly cite the economic advantage of refugees.”

In any fight, keeping your opponent off balance is critical, and telegraphing your punches is dangerous. Feints and tactical retreats are ways to avoid becoming predictable. Even threats and bravado can be used to confuse the enemy, as boxing legend Muhammed Ali proved. But eventually, you have to punch your opponent in the face hard enough to knock him flat.
Whether by design or instinct, Donald Trump’s foreign policy so far has followed this age-old strategy. He has abandoned the West’s predictable foreign-policy narrative that conflicts can be resolved with “diplomatic engagement,” “international summits,” “UN Resolutions,” “multilateral agreements,” and all the other verbal rituals for avoiding risky action while the enemy uses the time for working more mischief. His direct, blunt, sometimes wild public pronouncements blow through the understated, vapid, stylized diplo-speak of “grave concern” and “deeply troubling” that are mere verbal place-holders, ways of providing the press copy without saying anything significant. And he has dropped the pretense that thugs and fanatics deserve to be treated with the “mutual respect” due to legitimate leaders of free nations.
But two years of Trump’s using this strategy with Iran may be becoming predictable, at least to the mullahs. In the last few months, attacks on six commercial vessels in the Gulf, and now the destruction of one of our drones flying over international waters, suggest Iran believes that for all his tough talk, Trump is a typical Western leader who will not back his words with action.

Since WWII, the U.S. has protected West Germany with American troops and its nuclear umbrella against the Soviet Union’s expansionist ambitions. Germany was considered a western ally that would side with its U.S. protector when facing an Iranian radical terrorist regime with nuclear ambitions. In recent years however, the German government seems to prefer dealing with Iran, rather than join with the U.S. Currently, many in the Berlin government believe that the U.S., not Iran, is escalating the current tension between Washington and Tehran. Germany’s obstructionism vis-a-vis U.S. efforts to restrain the leading state sponsor of global terrorism – Iran, had prompted U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to cancel a visit to Germany last month. According to the German weekly Der Spiegel, “The Americans are currently escalating their conflict with Tehran – with unpredictable consequences for their allies in Europe.” To some in the German government it appears that Iran’s deliberate (direct or indirect) hand in attacking oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman is of no consequence. Similarly, Iran’s pushing Hamas to fire rockets at Israel’s southern towns to kill Israeli civilians last month, is not a problem for the Germans.
Jurgen Tritten, a Green Party member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the German Parliament, commented that “The U.S. appears to be looking for a pretext to escalate the conflict with Iran.” He added, “The claim that Iran is planning an attack against the U.S. smacks of a Tonkin incident.” (A reference to the Gulf of Tonkin Congressional Resolution, enacted on August 10, 1964, which gave President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization without a formal declaration of war, to use military force in Southeast Asia, and Vietnam in particular.)
Unlike the Iran appeasement mode displayed by the German government and Jurgen Tritten, the U.S. is sending an aircraft carrier strike force and Air Force bombers to the Middle East, not to threaten war with Iran but rather the opposite, to deter the radical Iranian regime from continuing its provocative actions against U.S interests that might lead to a war, including attempts to seize U.S. naval vessels. In January 2016, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) captured two U.S. naval vessels and held 10 U.S. sailors hostage. John Bolton, U.S. national security adviser pointed out that sending the carrier task force is “a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on U.S. interests or those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.”
