Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. Turkey rejects Dutch resolution on Armenian events (hdn, Jun 13, 2019)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-rejects-dutch-resolution-on-armenian-events-144143

“Turkey on June 12 slammed a Dutch parliament resolution on the 1915 Armenian events against Turkey.

“We strongly reject the resolutions adopted yesterday [on June 11] in the House of Representatives in the Netherlands upon the initiatives of the circles against Turkey, as well as the baseless and slanderous allegations referred to in these resolutions,” said a Foreign Ministry statement.

“It should be known that these groundless efforts, which are devoid of sense of consideration and seriousness, will not go unanswered for those who resort to them,” the ministry said, adding that the understanding of “saving the day” to receive more votes would eventually bring harm to followers of this kind of “irrational approaches”.

It also called on the Dutch parliament to address more important issues which pose a threat for European values — such as rising extreme right, xenophobia, racism, Islamophobia and increasing attacks on mosques — instead of showing an “anti-Turkey stance”.

“It is clear that at a time when efforts are underway to normalize our relations with the Netherlands and progress is being made as a result of mutual steps, these kind of unfounded and ill-minded attempts of the Dutch Parliament, the purpose of which is incomprehensible, will not contribute to our relations,” it noted.

Turkey’s position is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia in 1915 took place when some sided with invading Russians and revolted against Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.

Ankara does not accept the alleged genocide but acknowledges that there were casualties on both sides during the events of World War I.

Turkey objects to the presentation of the incidents as “genocide” but describes the 1915 events as a tragedy for both sides.

Ankara has repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians from Turkey and Armenia plus international experts to tackle the issue.”

  4. Immigration office shortfalls meant rise in criminals admitted to NL: Report

Due to capacity problems, the Dutch immigration and naturalization service is putting pressure on employees to not revoke the residency permits of asylum seekers convicted of crimes, NRC reported on Thursday. According to the newspaper, this is because the procedures involved in revoking residency permits cost the IND a lot of time and money.

Internal IND documents in the newspaper’s possession show that the revocation team in Zwolle is being pressured by management to revoke as few residency permits as possible. “The focus is on quick non-revocation of residency permits (ie the laborious cases). We find that we are too busy with money generating actions”, one document states, according to NRC

A whistleblower previously told the newspaper that criminal- or lying asylum seekers wrongly retain their residency permits. An independent committee led by senior official Johan de Leeuw investigated these allegations and last month released a report stating that there were no abuses at the IND, but there are points that need to be improved on. The committee said that the IND does drop the ball when it comes to revoking the residency permits of criminal asylum seekers, but that there is no question of a pattern or intention.

  5. Sea Watch ship must dock in Tripoli – Salvini (ansa, Jun 13, 2019)
    http://www.ansa.it/english/news/2019/06/13/sea-watch-ship-must-dock-in-tripoli-salvini_233417bc-0e6c-4a8c-8c64-6ef78e964298.html

“Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said Thursday that a ship operated by the Sea-Watch NGO should dock in Tripoli after it rescued 52 people from a rubber dinghy off the Libyan coast this week. “After embarking 52 immigrants in Libya waters, the illegal ship now finds itself 38 miles from the Libyan coast, 125 miles from Lampedusa, 78 miles from Tunisia and 170 miles from Malta,” League leader Salvini said.

“The Libyan authorities have officially allocated Tripoli as the nearest port for the disembarkment. “If the illegal NGO ship disobeys, keeping the lives of the immigrants at risk, they will answer for it fully”.

German NGO Sea-Watch has on several occasions sought to challenge Salvini’s policy of closing Italy’s ports to NGO-run search-and-rescue ships. The government, meanwhile, has just passed a new decree that would see NGO ships that bring migrants rescued at sea to Italy without permission fined up to 50,000 euros.

The NGO said Thursday that it will sue Salvini for defamation.

The minister has called the NGO’s vessel “a pirate ship that allows some people to repeatedly break the law”.

Sea-Watch later reiterated “we will not offload the rescued migrants in Libya”.

It said “Tripoli is not a safe port. Forcibly taking rescued people back to a war-torn country, having them imprisoned and tortured, is a crime.

“It is shameful that Italy is promoting these atrocities and that EU governments are complicit”.”

  6. Young, urban, on benefits: a snapshot of Swiss jihadists (thelocal, Jun 13, 2019)
    https://www.thelocal.ch/20190613/young-urban-on-benefits-a-snapshot-of-swiss-jihadists-terrorism-switzerland

“Young urban men with low levels of education are over-represented among Switzerland’s jihadists, while 40 percent are on some form of benefits, a new study shows.

The study by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) looked at the case files of 130 jihadists over a ten-year period supplied by the Swiss Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) with a view to finding ways to combat radicalisation.

The vast majority of the 130 people in the sample studied are, or were, ‘high-risk persons’ including both violent extremists and supporters and propagandists for jihadist groups.

More than half of these extremists (72, or 55 percent) were jihadist travellers. In nine other cases jihadist travel was prevented.

Men dominated the sample, with just 14 women (11 percent) among the 130 FIS cases.

    Only 6 percent were minors

In terms of age, the average was 28, while two thirds were aged from 21 to 35 years of age. Some 10 percent were over 40. Only six percent were minors.

Switzerland’s jihadists also have relatively low levels of education – only five percent of the 96 extremists for whom educational information was available had completed tertiary studies.

In addition, around a third of people in the FIS sample were unemployed before they were radicalized – far higher than the Swiss jobless rate of 5.1 percent in 2017. This unemployment figure jumped to 58 percent post-radicalization, which study authors attribute to possible difficulties in finding work after criminal proceedings.

    41 percent were on benefits

Meanwhile, 41 percent of Switzerland’s radicalized Muslims were on benefits of some kind.

However, in comments made to The Local, study author Miryam Eser Davolio with the ZHAW School of Social Work was keen to put this figure in perspective.

She noted that these benefits included disability benefits and asylum seeker benefits as well as unemployment money.

In addition, Davolio said that the FIS had been unable to state whether being on benefits was a cause or result of radicalization in individual cases.

    Predominantly urban

The ZHAW study also found Swiss jihadists were predominantly urban, with just 11.5 percent living in a rural area. French-speaking Switzerland is also over-represented. A total of 42 percent of jihadists analysed lived in this part of the country although it only makes up 24 percent of the total Swiss population.

The study’s authors also argue that Switzerland’s jihadists are home-grown. They note that while only a third of jihadist travellers had a Swiss passport and just 21.5 percent came from western and southern Europe, 35 percent were born in Switzerland, a further 21 percent came to the country before their 12th birthday and another 10 percent came before their 18th birthday.

    Special prisons for radicalized inmates

Davolio told The Local that there had improvements in Swiss measures to combat and prevent radicalization since a previous study in 2015.

This includes the expansion of a network of specialist extremism units from two in 2015 to nine this year.

But she said a lot of work remained to be done.

The ZHAW studys recommend the creation of special prisons designed to deal with jihadists and a multi-pronged approach for the reintegration of radicalized people into the wider community.

It also stress the importance of communication and information sharing between different government departments and agencies.”

  8. Sister of Saudi crown prince faces Paris trial over attack on workman (france24, Jun 13, 2019)
    https://www.france24.com/en/20190613-sister-saudi-crown-prince-faces-paris-trial-over-attack-workman

“The sister of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is to be put on trial in Paris next month for allegedly ordering her bodyguard to beat up a workman in the French capital, according to a legal source.

The case against Princess Hassa bint Salman stems from an alleged assault in her apartment on the ultra-expensive Avenue Foch in west Paris in September 2016.

The trial is due to be judged on July 9, the source said.

The alleged victim has said he was hired to carry out refurbishment work at Princess Hassa’s apartment and that she became angry after he took a photograph, accusing him of wanting to sell it to the media.

He alleges the princess, said to be in her 40s, then ordered the bodyguard to beat him up.

Le Point magazine reported that the princess shouted: “Kill him, the dog, he doesn’t deserve to live”.

The workman says he was punched in the face, his hands were tied and he was forced to kiss the princess’s feet during an hours-long ordeal.

His tools were confiscated before he was allowed to leave.

AFP reported at the time of the incident that his injuries were so severe that he was ordered off work for eight days.

    Bodyguard charged

The bodyguard was charged on October 1, 2016 with armed violence, theft, issuing death threats and holding someone against their will.

Princess Hassa is likely to be absent from the trial as she has not been apprehended under an international arrest warrant issued in 2017.

Lionised in the Saudi media for her charity work and women’s rights campaigning, Princess Hassa is sister to Prince Mohammed, one of the most powerful leaders in the Middle East…”

  11. JULIAN ASSANGE TO BE EXTRADITED TO US

The United Kindom signed an extradition request for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange Wednesday, after a request from the U.S. to do so.

U.K. Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced that he had signed the extradition papers, just one day after the Department of Justice asked Britain to extradite Assange, CNN reported. This comes as the U.S., the Department of Justice filed charges against Assange in April.

“First of all I am very pleased the police were able to apprehend him and now he is rightly behind bars because he broke UK law,” Javid told BBC Radio 4 on Thursday. “There is an extradition request from the US that is before the courts tomorrow but yesterday I signed the extradition order and certified it and that will be going in front of the courts tomorrow.”

Assange, 47, was in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years following sexual assault charges in Sweden that were dropped in May because officials couldn’t physically serve him a court appearance.

The charges against Assange in the U.S. stem from his role in helping Chelsea Manning steal tens of thousands of diplomatic cables in 2010. The U.S. could charge him for conspiracy to commit computer hacking on a classified computer.

The U.S. will seek his extradition in a London court and will look Friday at all the charges against Assange.
