After I was assaulted, I got home to watch a programme on BBC Two called ‘one day in Gaza‘. This issue I wish to address is not one of perception, narrative or bias. We need to talk about media fraud. This is not the first time they have done this either. In 2015 BBC Watch pulled them up. What the BBC did is deliberate and deceitful. This shielding of the antisemitism pushes poison directly into British public discourse. They hide the racist hate so people cannot see it – this in turn makes any ‘Jewish’ response irrational. The BBC have a duty to tell the viewers the truth. If they wish to, they can choose to relay to the viewers the propaganda excuse (‘they say that they don’t actually mean Jews’), but they have no right to distort the translation and deceive the viewers in the way they did. It is shameful, disgraceful reporting that misdirects viewers and places British Jews in danger. When those Arabs say ‘Jews’ they mean ‘Jews’ – and they include me in that description. During Ramadan in May and June last year Omar Ashfaq, 24, travelled to mosques in Luton, Derby, Loughborough, Coventry and Birmingham to leave extremist and violent material.
On Friday 1 June last year three USB drives containing imagery and words promoting and encouraging terrorism, were found in the shoes of people attending a mosque in Leicestershire.
The following day the same thing happened at two mosques in Bedfordshire, in which four USB drives in total were found. Five drives were also discovered at a mosque in the West Midlands.
On Monday 4 June another three devices were found at a Derbyshire mosque. A further stick was discovered at another mosque in the West Midlands a few days later.
Worshippers who found the memory sticks informed mosque authorities who were able to identify Ashfaq from CCTV footage and notified the police.
The 24-year-old, formerly from Derby, was arrested and a search of his home and a vehicle uncovered numerous bags of USB sticks as well as notes outlining his plans.
One document labelled ‘Target: 1 week’ was a map on which a route was drawn, taking in as far north as Leeds, east to Peterborough, south to London and west to Stoke-on-Trent.
Ashfaq was charged with three counts of possessing material of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism and eight counts of disseminating terrorist publications.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to the possession offences but continued to deny disseminating the material — claiming he was merely attempting to highlight extremist material available online to Imams so that they could report it to the police.
On the first day of his trial at Birmingham Crown Court, however, Ashfaq pleaded guilty to dissemination and today was jailed for four-and-a-half years, with a further year of monitoring on licence.
Deb Walsh from the CPS said: ‘Omar Ashfaq found a novel way to spread violent Daesh propaganda in the hope of encouraging British Muslims to commit terrorist acts.
‘Instead the mosques he targeted found him on their CCTV recordings and handed in the footage and the memory sticks to the police.
‘I want to thank them for acting quickly so the CPS had the crucial evidence we needed to encourage him to plead guilty.'”

While both Poland and Italy were tied with 53 per cent saying they agreed with the statement, the Swedish number exceeded that of Hungary, a nation noted for its strong anti-mass migration stance and policies, at 49 per cent.
More than one-third, 35 percent of the respondents across all of the countries surveyed, said that immigration was the most important issue facing the European Union today but only 14 percent said that the European Union had managed to handle the migrant crisis in 2015 and 2016 in a competent manner.
By contrast, 41 percent of Germans say they would welcome more refugees despite being the largest recipient of migrants during the height of the migrant crisis, and the challenges of rising crime, increased spending and lack of both cultural and economic integration.

“Certain websites and the Chinese language edition of the internet’s free encyclopedia have not been accessible in China for several years already. Since April, users have reportedly had difficulties viewing other language versions of the community-edited site as well.
Online encyclopedia Wikipedia across different language URLs has not been accessible in China since late April, a report by internet censorship researchers from the project Open Observatory of Network Interference suggests. According to them, although these domains were previously accessible, the data collected from 25 April 2019 onwards point to “the same DNS anomalies” for them.
The BBC cites Wikimedia saying it had received “no notice” about the difficulties.
“In late April, the Wikimedia Foundation determined that Wikipedia was no longer accessible in China. After closely analysing our internal traffic reports, we can confirm that Wikipedia is currently blocked across all language versions”, its statement, cited by several reports, reads.

Yemeni Armed Drones Attack Saudi Oil Pipeline
The strike was believed to be backed by Iran, which warned Tuesday of U.S.-created ‘false flag attacks’ as the likelihood of conflict escalates.
A major oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia was struck by armed drones and temporarily shut down, the kingdom’s energy minister said Tuesday, calling the move an “act of terrorism and sabotage” that marks the second attack on the Saudi oil infrastructure in as many days.
Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih did not directly identify the perpetrator of the attack but said the incidents prove the importance of the kingdom’s continued conflict against terrorist groups, including the Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen, according to the country’s state news service. Oil prices spiked as a result of the attacks, Reuters reports.
Saudi Arabia continues to wage war in Yemen against those militias in what is considered a proxy conflict between the oil-rich gulf state and its arch-rival Iran, which backs the Houthis. U.S. and allied intelligence assessments indicate Iran was also behind sabotaging two Saudi oil tankers on Monday.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An oil pipeline that runs across Saudi Arabia was hit Tuesday by drones, the Saudi energy minister said, as regional tensions flared just days after what the kingdom called an attack on two of its oil tankers near the Persian Gulf.
While both U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said they were not planning for conflict, the volatility was felt in oil markets with benchmark Brent crude trading over $71 a barrel, up more than $1 on the day.
The pipeline that runs from the kingdom’s oil-rich Eastern Province to a Red Sea port was shut down, but Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih Al-Falih vowed that the production and export of Saudi oil would not be interrupted.
The Houthis, who are at war with Saudi Arabia, said earlier Tuesday they launched seven drones targeting vital Saudi installations, without elaborating. They later claimed responsibility for the pipeline attack in comments broadcast by Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari.

U.S. pulls some government employees from Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 15 (Reuters) – Washington ordered the departure of non-emergency government employees from Iraq on Wednesday, after repeated U.S. expressions of concern about threats from Iranian-backed forces.
The U.S. State Department has ordered the pullout of the employees from both the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and its consulate in Erbil, the embassy said in a statement.
“Normal visa services at both posts will be temporarily suspended,” it said, recommending those affected depart as soon as possible. It was unclear how many staff would leave.
On Tuesday, the U.S. military reaffirmed concerns about possible imminent threats from Iran to its troops in Iraq, although a senior British commander cast doubt on that and Tehran has called it “psychological warfare.”

Members of the Revolutionary Communist Party of America launched an advertising campaign at the University of California-Los Angeles in early May by chalking and distributing signage in an apparent effort to recruit college students to subscribe to their communist ideology.
The group set up signs, handed out flyers, and wrote out chalk markings, as seen in photos obtained by Campus Reform, even after being asked by staff and housing officials to stop their activities. The group’s distributed manifesto condemned capitalism, as well as “jokes” based on race, gender, nationality, etc. Chalked markings on the ground and walls asked students to speak.
The Communists remained in the campus dorms, known as “The Hill”, for several hours before leaving.
Sections D3, D8, and D10 of UCLA’s On-Campus Housing Regulations forbid using housing spaces without permission, chalking and signing on The Hill without UCLA approval — the failure of the group’s signage to be in Residential Life display cases indicates this was not obtained — and advertising a non-university organization without approval, respectively. However, according to UCLA’s On Campus Conduct Policy, there exists no process for sanctioning non-resident violations.

AG Barr reportedly working with CIA to review origins of Russia probe

Attorney General William Barr is reportedly working closely with the directors of the CIA, FBI and Office of the Director of National Intelligence to review the origins of the Trump-Russia probe, as well as surveillance efforts against the Trump campaign.
According to CNN, Barr is working with CIA Director Gina Haspel, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and ODNI Director Dan Coats on the interagency review.
Barr told Congress in April that he planned to form a team within the Justice Department to investigate whether the U.S. government improperly surveilled the Trump campaign.

A man from Nigeria who was claiming asylum in Canada has been sentenced to 52 months in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in a psychiatric ward at a Montreal hospital.
Quebec court Judge Dennis Galiatsatos sentenced 40 year-old Owolabi Adejojo in March, calling his behaviour “despicable.”
The assaults took place in February 2018, one month after Adejojo entered Canada from the U.S. and filed a refugee claim.
A few months before that, Adejojo was accused of attacking two men with a beer bottle in Baltimore.
It’s not clear how Adejojo was able to get into Canada, why authorities didn’t seem to be aware of his assault charges in the U.S., or how he ended up in the psychiatric ward.
“I must confess that the lack of detail and information given to the court by the defence about the accused’s personal situation was highly unusual and somewhat unsettling,” Galiatsatos noted in his decision.
“The court is left completely in the dark about who he is and what his personal circumstances are.”
‘The stuff of nightmares’
The victim is a 57-year-old woman who was admitted to the psychiatric ward after her family noticed an alarming shift in her behaviour, and was worried she may harm herself.
She was committed to the psychiatric ward against her will, by court order.
“Imagine the irony of going to a hospital for help — desperately needed help — only to be harmed instead,” Galiatsatos said.
“Now compound that irony exponentially. Imagine being forced to remain at the hospital against your will, by court order no less, on the basis that it is in your best interest. Only to get violated in the most opportunistic fashion, falling prey to a man who capitalized on your weakness and vulnerability,” he continued.
“It is, to borrow an expression, ‘the stuff of nightmares.'”
Victim unable to consent
Adejojo was a patient in the psychiatric ward at the same time as the victim, in February 2018. He assaulted her three times over two days in the cafeteria, the decision says.
The victim didn’t initially report these assaults, and was largely passive while they occurred, although she did ask Adejojo to stop several times during the first assault.
The morning of the third assault, Adejojo was discharged from the ward, but staff allowed him to stay for lunch because it was extremely cold outside, which is standard practice.
He brought the victim to a corner of the cafeteria, kissed her and then penetrated her underneath their hospital gowns.
It was only when a doctor happened upon them that the assault stopped.
“Due to her mental illness and her significantly distorted cognitive abilities, [the victim] was unable to realize that she could decline to participate. Her state of vulnerability was manifest,” Galiatsatos said.
“The accused’s crime ranks sky-high on the repugnance scale. His predatory behaviour was as despicable as possible.”
Hospital calls assaults ‘isolated incidents’
Justin Meloche, a spokesperson for the regional health authority that oversees Notre-Dame hospital, told CBC the assaults were isolated incidents.
He said there was both a security guard and an orderly in the cafeteria at the time of the assaults.
He said they didn’t notice the incidents because they were “subtle,” occurring under hospital gowns and cafeteria tables without overt resistance from the victim.
And he noted the victim didn’t complain about the assaults until a few days after they occurred.
Meloche said once the assaults were reported, the hospital reconfigured a common area to separate male and female patients, and urged guards and orderlies in the cafeteria to be more vigilant.
Canadian authorities unaware of assault charge in the U.S.
Galiatsatos’s decision said all that is known about Adejojo is that he was born in Nigeria and living with his wife and three children in the U.S. with no status for three years before he left them to come to Canada.
He has no family or job here, and no ties to Montreal.
Adejojo has no criminal record in the U.S., but Radio-Canada found an incident report from police in Baltimore involving him.
In October 2017, he was arrested and charged with assault.
The incident report said Adejojo attacked two men he’d been staying with at an apartment with a broken beer bottle.
The charges were suspended, which, in the state of Maryland, means they’re set aside for a year but prosecutors have the option to reopen them at any time.
Radio-Canada also found another court document ordering Adejojo to keep the peace and be on good behavior from December 2017, although it’s not clear from the court document what the order is related to.
Asylum seekers are supposed to be subject to thorough background checks. Reporters asked federal Border Security Minister Bill Blair about the case Tuesday morning in Ottawa.
“Every individual who comes into this country, regardless of how they crossed the border, they’re subject to a very rigorous background check, and that means police, the RCMP and CBSA check all available data,” Blair said.
“We’ll have to ask them what was checked in these circumstances and whether or not that data was available. If it was, it should’ve been known to them.”
More charges while awaiting trial
Adejojo’s conduct while in custody in Canada awaiting trial on the sexual assault charges was also less than exemplary.
Galiatsatos’s decision noted that Adejojo was charged and convicted of assaulting a correctional officer at a detention centre. He spat in the guard’s mouth.
He’s also facing charges of assault with a weapon and uttering death threats against another prison guard.
It’s alleged he threw a milk carton in an officer’s face during a search of his cell, after which he threatened to find her address and kill her and her family.
With credit for time served, Adejojo will be released from prison in just over two and a half years. The decision noted that Adejojo will “almost certainly” be deported once he is released.

Fox News has an update Tuesday to the announcement from yesterday evening that Attorney General Barr had appointed U.S. Attorney John Durham to investigate Spygate. According to Fox’s sources, Durham has actually been conducting the investigation “for weeks” now.
Fox included in its report the reminder that Barr testified more than a month ago that he (Barr) was reviewing the conduct of the operation against Trump.
The formal announcement of Durham’s role was made on May, 13 May, however. I read this as follows: Barr was initially looking into the paper trail on what happened to see what was there and the kind of effort it would take (and, for that matter, be worth). Was there enough there there to justify the taxpayers’ time and resources? In the military this is called a preliminary inquiry, which renders the decision factors for whether a formal investigation, which could lead to charges, is in order.

Austria far-right figure admits e-mails with NZ attack suspect
The leader of an Austrian far-right group has confirmed a media report that he had more extensive contact with the suspect behind deadly mosque attacks in New Zealand than previously admitted.
Austrian investigators have been probing the Identitarian Movement Austria (IBOe) after it emerged that its figurehead Martin Sellner received a donation from alleged Christchurch gunman Brenton Tarrant.
So far, Sellner — whose group is known for its anti-immigration stunts — had publicly denied having had contact with Tarrant other than sending him a “thank you” email for the 1,500-euro ($1,700) donation received in January 2018.
But public broadcaster ORF reported late Tuesday that the men had in fact exchanged several emails, the last one dating back to July 2018, showing that their contact was “longer and more intensive”.
In reply to Sellner’s “thank you” message, Tarrant said it had only been a small contribution in comparison to the work that Sellner was doing.
In a further exchange, Sellner invited Tarrant for a beer or coffee if he was ever in Vienna.
Tarrant returned the invitation for New Zealand, adding that sympathisers would also be happy to host him in Australia.
Sellner confirmed the authenticity of the emails to ORF but continues to deny he met Tarrant when the latter travelled to Austria.
Sellner also says he did not know of the plans for the attack.
Austrian investigators are probing whether there was any further contact between the two men.
Sellner admitted deleting the messages before a March raid on his home in Vienna, saying on Twitter late Tuesday that he did not want them in his inbox but took screenshots to show the police.
The probe has caused a headache for Austria’s far-right Freedom Party, which rules the country in a coalition government since 2017 and has had to distance itself from reported links to the IBOe.

Spain pulls its frigate from US military build-up in Gulf
Madrid (AFP) – Spain has recalled a frigate accompanying a US aircraft carrier to the Middle East because of rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, the defence ministry said Tuesday.
“For the moment the frigate Mendez Nunez has left the combat group of the USS Abraham Lincoln,” a ministry spokesman told AFP, confirming a report in the Spanish daily El Pais.
“It’s a temporary withdrawal, decided by Defence Minister Margarita Robles, as long as the American aircraft carrier is in this zone,” the spokesman added.
He said the Spanish frigate had joined the aircraft carrier’s strike group for a military exercise.
“No possible confrontation or warlike action is envisaged (by Spain) and it is for this reason that the participation is suspended for the moment,” he added.

Those who support the ban say the technology is not only flawed, but a serious threat to civil rights
San Francisco supervisors voted to pass a surveillance oversight legislation Tuesday that includes a ban on the use of facial recognition technology by police and other city departments.
The city has become the first in the U.S. to outlaw the tech at a time when it is becoming a part of daily life, from international airports to home security cameras.
Departments will need to get board approval to continue using or acquiring technology.
The vote was 8 to 1, with Supervisor Catherine Stefanie saying she could not vote for legislation that was well-intentioned but could compromise public safety.

DeSantis: Russians hacked two Florida voter databases ahead of 2016 election
Republican governor Ron DeSantis announced on Tuesday that Russians hackers had gained access to the voting databases of two Florida counties ahead of the 2016 presidential election. The announcement came on the same day the Russian government again denied any interference in the election, calling such accusations “baseless.”
DeSantis, who was briefed on the matter by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security, said the hacks didn’t result in any voter data being manipulated or election results compromised.
The governor further said he was prohibited by the FBI from disclosing the names of the counties hacked, but that election officials in the jurisdictions were informed of the issue. At the times of hacks, the previous Republican governor, now senator Rick Scott, was unaware of the intrusion.
“We’re trying to figure out what the state knew at the time,” DeSantis told the Associated Press. “Obviously, the previous administration and the head of [the Florida Department of Law Enforcement] did not have that information.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the fire-ravaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris on Wednesday alongside the cathedral’s rector, Patrick Chauvet, and French Culture Minister Franck Riester, where they toured the interior’s extensive damage from the massive blaze that burned through the structure in mid-April.

World leaders, tech execs pledge to curb online violence
A dozen countries and global tech giants including Facebook, Google and Twitter pledged Wednesday to find ways to keep internet platforms from being used to spread hate, organize extremist groups and broadcast terror attacks.
World leaders led by French President Emmanuel Macron and tech executives gathered in Paris to compile a set of guidelines dubbed the “Christchurch Call to Action,” named after the New Zealand city where 51 people were killed in a March attack on mosques. Part of the attack had been broadcast live on Facebook, drawing public outrage and fueling the debate on how to better regulate social media.
The agreement, which was drafted by the French and New Zealand governments, aims to prevent similar abuses of the internet while insisting that any actions must preserve “the principles of a free, open and secure internet, without compromising human rights and fundamental freedoms.”
The call was adopted by U.S. tech companies including Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, YouTube, along with France’s Qwant and DailyMotion, and the Wikimedia Foundation. The countries backing it were France, New Zealand, Britain, Canada, Ireland, Jordan, Norway, Senegal, Indonesia and the European Union’s executive body. Several other countries not present at the meeting added their endorsement.
The White House also said it agreed with the overarching message of the “Christchurch Call” but did not want to endorse it.
The meeting in Paris comes at a pivotal moment for tech companies, which critics accuse of being too powerful and resistant to regulation. Some have called for giants like Facebook to be broken up. Europe is leading a global push for more regulation of how the companies handle user data and copyrighted material. The tech companies, meanwhile, are offering their own ideas in a bid to shape the policy response.
In Wednesday’s agreement, which is not legally binding, the tech companies committed to measures to prevent the spread of terrorist or violent extremist content. That may include cooperating on developing technology or expanding the use of shared digital signatures.
They also promised to take measures to reduce the risk that such content is livestreamed, including flagging it up for real-time review.
And they pledged to study how algorithms sometimes promote extremist content. That would help find ways to intervene more quickly and redirect users to “credible positive alternatives or counter-narratives.”
Facebook, which dominates social media and has faced the harshest criticism for overlooking the misuse of consumer data and not blocking live broadcasts of violent actions, said it is toughening its livestreaming policies.
It’s tightening the rules for its livestreaming service with a “one strike” policy applied to a broader range of offenses. Activity on the social network that violates its policies, such as sharing an extremist group’s statement without providing context, will result in the user immediately being temporarily blocked. The most serious offenses will result in a permanent ban.
Previously, the company took down posts that breached its community standards but only blocked users after repeated offenses.
The tougher restrictions will be gradually extended to other areas of the platform, starting with preventing users from creating Facebook ads.
Facebook, which also owns Instagram and Whatsapp, said it’s investing $7.5 million to improve technology aimed at finding videos and photos that have been manipulated to avoid detection — a problem the company encountered with the Christchurch shooting, where the attacker streamed the killing live on Facebook.
“Tackling these threats also requires technical innovation to stay ahead of the type of adversarial media manipulation we saw after Christchurch,” Facebook’s vice president of integrity, Guy Rosen, said in a blog post.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern welcomed Facebook’s pledge. She said she herself inadvertently saw the Christchurch attacker’s video when it played automatically in her Facebook feed.
“There is a lot more work to do, but I am pleased Facebook has taken additional steps today … and look forward to a long-term collaboration to make social media safer,” she said in a statement.
Ardern is playing a central role in the Paris meetings, which she called a significant “starting point” for changes in government and tech industry policy.
The “Christchurch Call” was drafted as 80 CEOs and executives from technology companies gathered in Paris for a “Tech for Good” conference meant to address how they can use their global influence for public good — for example by promoting gender equality, diversity in hiring and greater access to technology for lower income users.
Ardern and Macron insist that the Christchurch guidelines must involve joint efforts between governments and tech giants. France has been hit by repeated Islamic extremist attacks by groups who recruited and shared violent images on social networks.
Free speech advocates and some in the tech industry bristle at new restrictions and argue that violent extremism is a societal problem that the tech world can’t solve.
Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, a member of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said that while “a higher level of responsibility is demanded from all of the platforms,” it is necessary to find a way to not censor legitimate discussion.
“It’s a hard line to draw sometimes,” he said.

A Belgian television crew was attacked on Sunday morning while filming at the Gare du Nord station in a reported no-go zone.
The migrants hurled rocks at the reporters. One man charged the television crew and assaulted the reporters who were force to flee.
One violent migrant tried to run off with the reporters’ equipment.
