New Zealand: Ardern offers condolences after Christchurch death toll hits 51
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke to the press on Friday in North Island’s Pike River after another victim of the Christchurch mosque shootings passed away in hospital overnight.
The victim, believed to be a Turkish national, was injured in the shootings that took place in Christchurch nearly two months ago – raising the death toll to 51.
New Zealand suffered two attacks on 15 March when Al Noor Mosque and Lindwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch were the target of shootings which were live streamed by the gunman.
Ardern was present in Pike River as part of the bid to recover the victims of the West Coast mining disaster, in which 29 men were killed in November 2010. Experts were due to enter the mine in an attempt to recover the bodies but it was stalled after an ‘unknown oxygen reading.

Responding to Sri Lanka’s emergency regulations imposing a ban on clothing that conceals the face, Amnesty International’s Deputy South Asia Director, Dinushika Dissanayake, said:
“At a time when many Muslims in Sri Lanka fear a backlash, imposing a ban that effectively targets women wearing a face veil for religious reasons risks stigmatizing them. They will be forced out of public spaces to stay at home and will be unable to work, study or access basic services. The ban violates their rights to non-discrimination, freedom of expression and religion.
“Where there are legitimate security concerns, the authorities can carry out identity checks when objectively necessary. It is important that the state provides measures that comply with human rights. Women have a right to choose how they dress, whatever their beliefs. Forcing women to take off the face-veil is coercive and humiliating.”

The amended emergency regulations came into force on 29 April 2019, in the wake of the Easter Sunday massacre that claimed the lives of more than 250 people in attacks on three churches and three hotels. Associated Press – The Latest: UN concerned by migrants denied food in Hungary
The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says it is “alarmed” by reports that asylum-seekers in Hungary have been deliberately deprived of food.
Numerous interim measures by the European Court of Human Rights have compelled Hungary to feed the asylum-seekers held in transit zones at the border with Serbia. But without changes to Hungarian laws, the cases keep recurring.
Adult asylum-seekers — except pregnant or nursing women — who have lost their case and are to be expelled from Hungary are deliberately deprived of food, which the U.N says can lead to malnutrition and is “inherently inhumane.”
“We encourage Hungary to ensure it fulfils its human rights obligations towards those deprived of liberty, regardless of whether they are in transit zones or any other place where migrants are detained and cannot provide for themselves,” the human rights office said.
The Hungarian Helsinki Committee, a civic group providing legal assistance to asylum-seekers, says that since August 2018, it has filed legal appeals in 13 “starvation cases,” affecting 21 people.

Hungary is deliberately depriving rejected asylum seekers of food as they await deportation, in violation of international law, the United Nations human rights office said today.
The UN called on authorities to end the practice. “According to reports, since August 2018, at least 21 migrants awaiting deportation had been deprived of food by the Hungarian authorities – some for up to five days,” Reuters reported UN human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani telling a news briefing.
Last year Amnesty International warned, “the atmosphere towards migrants and those trying to support them has become so toxic” in Hungary.
The country has become the most anti-migrant state in Europe with consulting firm Gallup’s Migrant Acceptance Index revealing that Hungary has the third-worst score in the entire world when residents were questioned on how accepting they were. The survey included comments on issues such as “an immigrant becoming your neighbour”.
Prime Minister Victor Orban has repeated racist remarks including referring to all refugees as “Muslim invaders” and migrants trying to reach Hungary as “poison”.

Siemens AG and Honeywell International Inc. have built machines that pull packages from the back of a tractor-trailer and place them on conveyor belts, whizzing the parcels off for sorting. Making robots that can load trucks is more complicated, although clearing that hurdle isn’t far off.

President Trump eases offshore drilling rules

The Trump’s administration recently released its final plans to ease offshore drilling regulations. The move was announced Thursday, and will roll back many safety measures enacted by former President Barack Obama after the BP oil spill of 2010.

Venezuela opposition figure, facing arrest warrant, says he met with generals
CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuelan opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez, evading arrest in a Spanish diplomatic residence, on Thursday disclosed he met with senior military officials before a failed uprising against President Nicolas Maduro this week.
Suggesting coordination continues with armed forces figures in the campaign to oust Maduro, Lopez said more “military movements” were on the way.

reuters – Spain will not allow its Venezuela embassy to become center of political activity
BEIRUT (Reuters)– Spain will not allow its embassy in Caracas to be used as a political center for opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez, acting Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said in Lebanon on Friday.
Lopez, an ally of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, took refuge at the Spanish residence with his wife and children earlier this week after an attempted military uprising against the government failed.
“Spain will not permit its embassy to be converted in to a center of political activity by Mr Lopez, or anyone else,” Borrell said on the sidelines of a conference in Beirut.
On Thursday, Spain said it would not turn Lopez over to the Venezuelan authorities after a court issued a warrant for his arrest, saying he violated an order that required him to remain under house arrest and restricted his ability to speak publicly.
Lopez was arrested during a protest movement in 2014 and transferred to house arrest in 2017. He escaped and appeared with Guaido and dozens of soldiers on Tuesday before seeking refuge at the embassy.
However, Borrell said that, while Spain would not hand Lopez over to Venezuelan authorities, he would not grant asylum to the opposition leader.
“Lopez has not asked for political asylum because, according to our legislation, for that you must request it while on Spanish territory,” Borrell said adding that while he was at the embassy, there would be a limit to his political activity.

Barr vs. Mueller on ‘obstruction’: Anatomy of an epic chess move?

A very interesting article appeared at Human Events on Wednesday. Will Chamberlain, a lawyer and the publisher of Human Events, laid out an argument that centers on interpretation of the federal statute used by Robert Mueller for his consideration of obstruction charges as regards the “Russia-Trump” investigation: 18 U.S.C. § 1512(c)(2).
The short story on this is that the Mueller team decided to pin its deliberation of the obstruction issue to 1512. There are a number of other obstruction-related statutes (see the Chamberlain piece, as well as the tweet thread from @JohnWHuber below). But none of them was arguably relevant in a situation with no predicate crime and no pending legal proceeding.
The current attorney general, William Barr, disagreed strongly with the Mueller team’s reasoning about 1512, and in June 2018 – while in private practice – forwarded a brief on the matter to Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, who at that point was the supervising authority for the special counsel. The situation thus boiled down to dueling interpretations of 1512.

On April 22, 2019, the Muslim American Society Islamic Center in Philadelphia (MAS Philly) uploaded a video of an “Ummah Day” celebration to its Facebook page in which young children wearing Palestinian scarves sang: “Glorious steeds call us and lead us [to] the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The blood of martyrs protects us… Take us, oh ships… until we reach our shores and crush the treacherous ones… Flow, oh rivers of martyrs!”
A young girl read a poem praising martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Palestine, and she asked: “Will [Jerusalem] be a hotbed for cowards?”
Another young girl read: “We will defend [Palestine] with our bodies… We will chop off their heads, and we will liberate the sorrowful and exalted Al-Aqsa Mosque… We will subject them to eternal torture.”
MAS Philly belongs to the Muslim American Society (MAS), which has 42 chapters in the United States and one in the United Kingdom.
MAS’ website says that its mission is to “move people to strive for God-consciousness, liberty and justice, and to convey Islam with utmost clarity,” and that its vision is “a virtuous and just American society.”

“Australia’s prime minister said his Liberal Party rejected the anti-Muslim views of an election candidate who on Friday became the third to lose the conservative party’s endorsement in as many days over social media postings.
The scandals surrounding candidates have become distractions for Prime Minister Scott Morrison and opposition leader Bill Shorten as they attempt to focus voters on policies ahead of the May 18 election. Candidates for both the Liberal Party and the center-left Labor Party opposition quit on Friday over their online pasts.
Morrison had stood by Jessica Whelan, a Liberal candidate for the House of Representatives in Tasmania state, amid accusations on Thursday she made anti-Muslim posts on social media. Morrison said screenshots of Whelan’s comments appeared to have been doctored and a complaint had been made to police.
But Whelan stepped aside Friday over further posts published in a newspaper overnight, conceding that she was responsible for some of them.
The Mercury newspaper in Tasmania reported that a 2017 post called for a national vote on whether Muslims should be allowed into Australia. Another post reportedly argued that refugees from Syria and Iraq should not be resettled in Tasmania.
Morrison said neither he nor his party accepted her views.

Another Liberal candidate, Jeremy Hearn, was dumped by the party Wednesday after a series of anti-Muslim comments came to light. The House candidate for Victoria state wrote online in 2016 that taxpayers should not fund Muslim schools because they were “fomenting rebellion against the government.”
Also Wednesday, Peter Killin, who was running for the House in Victoria, resigned from the party after secretly attacking gay government lawmaker Tim Wilson online in December and calling for party members to do more to prevent gays from being elected.
Anti-Muslim bias among some Liberal candidates is politically embarrassing for Morrison. Since an Australian gunman allegedly slaughtered 51 worshippers in New Zealand mosques in March, Shorten has strongly denied media reports that as a senior opposition lawmaker in 2010 he had urged colleagues to capitalize on voters’ growing concern about Muslim immigration.
Labor candidates have also been haunted by the internet’s long memory.
Labor candidate for the House in Victoria, Luke Creasey, on Friday succumbed to days of pressure over offensive Facebook posts by withdrawing his candidacy.
He apologized on Wednesday for sharing a rape joke and pornographic material on his Facebook page in 2012 when he was 22 years old. Shorten initially stood by Creasey, but more lewd posts surfaced on Friday, which included derogatory comments about women.
Creasey, a high school teacher, said in his resignation statement, “I think this is a really important lesson for young people that your social media footprint will follow you.”

China completes Africa’s biggest mosque as UN raises plight of Muslims at home
Criticised for the repression of Muslims at home, China this week celebrated the completion of the largest mosque on the African continent, in Algeria.
Costing some $2bn to build, the Great Mosque of Algiers (Djamaa El Djazair), built by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), is now set to open in the Algerian capital.
Visible from all over the city thanks to its 265-metre-high minaret, the mosque complex covers an area of 400,000 square meters, making it also the third largest mosque in the world, reports China’s state broadcaster, CGTN.
Its 20,000-sq-m prayer hall can accommodate 37,000 worshippers at once, while the total capacity of the mosque complex is 120,000.
The complex includes a park, library, public square, cultural centre, staff housing, a religious school, and even a fire station.
It is the biggest religious building ever built overseas by a Chinese company, state news agency Xinhua said. Construction took CSCEC nearly seven years after it won the bid for the project in 2011. Work started in August 2012.
Even as news of the completion was spreading yesterday, however, it emerged that the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, had raised the plight of Muslims in China’s Xinjiang region during a visit to Beijing last week.
“The Secretary-General discussed all relevant issues with the Chinese authorities … that includes the situation in Xinjiang,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters yesterday.
In the meeting Guterres stood by his High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, who has has repeatedly pressed China to let the UN investigate reports of disappearances and mass detentions of Muslims in the Xinjiang region and elsewhere, the spokesman said.
Guterres met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum, but raised the situation in Xinjiang during a separate meeting with China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, reports The Epoch Times.
Official Chinese media have said hundreds of thousands of people in Xinjiang have been relocated in a “bid to improve social stability and alleviate poverty”.
But Human Rights Watch has presented evidence that China’s crackdown on 13 million Muslims in the region has involved mass detention, forced indoctrination, collective punishment, as well as shutting down and demolishing mosques.

Afghan pilot training ends after almost half went AWOL in America
A program to train Afghan attack pilots has been ended after the airmen kept going absent without leave, or AWOL, while training in the United States.
More than 40 percent of the Afghan Air Force students enrolled in the U.S.-based training program to fly the AC-208 Combat Caravan, a light attack combat aircraft, went AWOL, according to a quarterly report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR.
The training took place at Fort Worth, Texas, SIGAR told Air Force Times. Northrop Grumman operates a 5,000 square-foot custom-built classroom space located at Meacham Airport in Fort Worth.
“The AC-208 Training Center of Excellence is designed to provide partner nations with instructional classroom activities and initial aircrew and maintenance training on the Northrop Grumman modified AC-208 Eliminator aircraft,” a Northrop Grumman press release reads.
Those students that did not go AWOL were pulled back to Afghanistan to complete their training. As a result, only one class graduated from the U.S.-based program. The second and third classes will continue and finish their training in Afghanistan.
SIGAR said they did not have data on whether the AWOL pilots were recovered. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
However, the phenomenon is neither new, nor limited to Afghan Air Force trainees.
“We found that nearly half of all foreign military trainees that went AWOL while training in the United States since 2005 were from Afghanistan (152 of 320),” SIGAR reported in October 2017. “Of the 152 AWOL Afghan trainees, 83 either fled the United States after going AWOL or remain unaccounted for.”
NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan maintains a cohort of advisers to train Afghan airmen known as Train Advise Assist Command – Air, or TAAC-Air.
TAAC-Air told the inspector general that it has a plan to continue the student training and is developing a contract solution to support the effort to train the initial group of AC-208 aircrew.
Afghan pilots are a common target for Taliban hitmen, who know taking out highly-qualified attack pilots has a major impact on the battlefield.
It is not uncommon for Afghans to go AWOL while training in the U.S., with many claiming asylum after being apprehended. Those asylum claims are sometimes approved, as was the case of an Afghan officer who slipped away from a U.S. training exercise in Massachusetts, according to the Associated Press.
The first female Afghan pilot was also granted asylum after she continuously received death threats, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Afghan Air Force has had some notable success in the past year, as A-29 attack pilots began flying night-time raids and dropping laser-guided bombs in combat without coalition advisers assisting them.
However, the operational success is tempered by shortfalls on the maintenance side of the mission. The Afghans still rely on contractor support for maintaining aircraft, and the number of Afghan airmen trained to provide airmen is consistently below authorized manpower levels.
U.S. contractors who provide maintenance assistance will not be able to stay in country to continue their work if U.S. troops are no longer in place to provide security, the Pentagon inspector general has warned in the past.
In the case of some airframes, such as UH-60 Black Hawks, Afghan pilots are not trained and qualified at a fast enough rate to keep pace with deliveries of the aircraft.
Although the Mi-17 fleet forms the backbone of the Afghan Air Force, the U.S. government plans to supply 159 UH-60 Black Hawks to Afghanistan by 2024.

A Columbia woman arrested on federal child pornography charges should be held without bond as a flight risk and danger to children, prosecutors argued in a motion filed Thursday.
Brittany Bailey, 29, was arrested on a federal warrant signed Monday in Washington, D.C., charging her with being a part of a national ring of people who shared child pornography and graphic descriptions of child rape in an online chat service.
“The Government submits that there is clear and convincing evidence that there are no conditions which the court could place on the defendant’s release which would reasonably assure her future appearance in court and the safety of the community,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Turner wrote in the motion filed in the Western District of Missouri.
A detention hearing for Bailey is set for Tuesday in Jefferson City.
The complaint filed against Bailey names six other people in places ranging from Spokane, Washington, to Sarasota, Florida. The investigation, a joint effort by the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI, began when an undercover officer became a part of a chat group called “Taboo Parents” group on KIK, an online messaging application. The undercover officer became an administrator of the group and identified 54 individuals who participated at some point.

After Attorney General Barr’s summary of the Mueller Report, the Democrat media held out hope that the full report would prove collusion. DNC Operative Sought and Received Help From Ukraine to Help Elect Clinton, Report Says

Alexandra Chalupa, an operative paid by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), asked the Ukrainian embassy in Washington for dirt on Trump-campaign chairman Paul Manafort in 2016, the embassy confirmed in a statement to The Hill.
While the embassy denies having helped the operative, a former embassy worker told The Hill’s John Solomon that the embassy helped Chalupa knowing full well that she was working to help elect then-candidate Hillary Clinton and defeat then-candidate Donald Trump.
Ambassador Valeriy Chaly, in written answers to Solomon, said that Chalupa asked the Ukrainian government for information on Manafort’s dealings inside Ukraine. Chalupa tried to arrange for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to comment about Manafort’s ties to Russia during a 2016 visit to Washington, Chaly said.

The dreadful newspaper did not support the rescue of Jewish refugees from the Third Reich. Its owners, the Sulzbergers, were German Jewish immigrants who were contemptuous of East German Jews (Poland, especially), and editorially asked FDR to block entry to the East Europeans, most famously those on board the St Louis, which incredibly was sent back to the Nazis.
Moreover, the Times consistently underplayed the dimensions of the Holocaust, one of the reasons American military officers, including Eisenhower himself, were so horrified by what they saw when they entered the liberated concentration camps. Ike sent a message to Congressional leaders urging them to visit, because it was impossible to imagine the horror. Even General Patton was overcome by nausea when he first entered.
The Times has repeatedly called for “understanding” our enemies, especially totalitarians. The newspaper’s Moscow reporter, Walter Duranty, denied the forced starvation of the Ukrainian people in the early 1930s (for which he outrageously was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, still displayed at NYT headquarters), and similarly called on President Reagan to tone down his attacks on the Soviet Gulag Archipelago. Richard: As I have said before no matter what we do there is a major danger of China, Russia and Iran getting their desire of a “Syria” in South America to spread chaos and to send a massive flood of refugees north to the US. In my opinion the best thing for us to do is to bring all of the pressure we can on Venezuela and its overseas allies up to and including an air and sea blockade. After that we need to work with the South American neighbors of Venezuela to ensure a that Maduro is removed from office, hopefully with minimum US personal. Remember if we are going to ask the South American countries to put their military at risk some of our own soldiers have to be put in harms way. If they aren’t the people we are asking to risk their troops will not do anything.

Since 2007, federal government agencies have handed over $47 million to 61 Islamic institutions in the forms of 411 various grants and contracts.
In total, if the government’s own data is accurate, at least $41 million was given to institutions either controlled or under the partial influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, Jamaat-e-Islami (a violent South Asian Islamist movement), Salafis, Deobandis (a hardline South Asian Sunni sect from which the Taliban was created) and the Iranian regime, among others.
Some of the largest amounts involve grants to aid charities. Long favored by Islamist movements as a means to spread ideology through welfare, charities also provide extremists with plentiful funding and the occasional accompanying credibility of government partnership.

On Wednesday, Attorney General William Barr appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to talk about the Mueller report.
This is a fair request. We’ve heard and are going to hear a lot of griping from Democrats about how Barr’s summary of the report was biased and left out pertinent details. We’re going to hear a lot more Democrat claims about how Mueller’s report is clear grounds for an obstruction of justice charge and that the Department of Justice brushed it aside, etc., etc.
This is fine — understandable, even. It’s not going to change anything. Donald Trump will sleep soundly without even a Nytol to send him off to slumberland. No matter what Jerrold Nadler says, nobody’s going to be any closer to impeachment any time soon.
Barr’s appearance isn’t going to bring the exorcized specter of Russian collusion back somehow. It’s not going to transform the Mueller report into the smoking gun that eventually ousts Trump from the White House.
