Meet Colossus: The Robot That Saved Firefighter Lives at the Notre Dame Inferno
Hat tip: JD @ GoV & Johnnyu for slotting Zero Hedge so often
A robot named “Colossus” played a key role in helping save the lives of firefighters at the recent Notre Dame blaze, according to The Independent. When the commander of the Paris fire brigade told his firefighters to retreat because the building’s temperatures had grown too high, he instead enlisted the help of a 1,100 pound tank-like robot with the ability to venture into places and conditions that would quickly kill a human being.
The robot utilizes a water cannon capable of firing more than 660 gallons per minute, which it sprayed at the walls of the cathedral in the midst of the blaze.
NR: This is exactly what high technology and autonomous drones are for. Inveigling their way into uncontrollably hazardous earthquake ruins, building collapses, and avalanches while searching for survivors (or performing fine grain damage assessment) will be just a few of the life-saving services they can provide.
It’s much like how the earliest “robots” actually morphed out of “man amplifier” suits. See below re: Aliens for (best . sci – fi . sequel … ever.) Sigourney “niece of Spike Jones drummer Doodles” Weaver dropkicks that Alien queen through the goalposts of life.
Tragically, in another mere 50 years (or much less in 5G–IoT warp space) the original Notre Dame could have been crawling with MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) -based bot equivalents of that dish antenna humping cockroach in The Fifth Element.
Consider these relatively simple features:
• Weather resistant
• Swarm behavior enabled.
• Low Res 2-Way Video w IR & Audio.
• Retrieve samples from otherwise inaccessible areas.
• IoT Networked for heat, light, smoke, vibration, gasses, etc.
• Can be collected with a magnet or some other aggregator tool.
• Fueled by light and dust (e.g., digesting stray human skin cells)
• Completely mobile on all surfaces in all orientations including upside-down using synthetically texturized nano-surfaces (e.g., gecko pads).
These microbots would operate continuously and also serve to characterize materials aging processes throughout the structure. By sampling the surface moisture of timberwork and cast masonry, early detection of decomposition or rot can be performed more regularly in order to catch issues in their early stages.
At the first sign of fire, a swarm of them could cluster up on the hotspot and, literally, smother it with their ventilation-obstructing little corpses.
Microbots would also be able to find wedding rings dropped in drain pipes, detect detritus buildup and monitor pests such as termites, rodents, nesting birds, touts and crooked bookies.
TLDR?
Heavy cargo-shifting man amplifier used in epic catfight.

Sri Lanka to seek help tracking international links to attacks
1 MIN READ
COLOMBO (Reuters) – Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena will ask for foreign assistance to track international links to a series of suicide bomb at churches and luxury hotels on Easter Sunday that killed 290 people and wounded more than 500, his office said.
“The intelligence reports (indicate) that foreign terrorist organizations are behind the local terrorists. Therefore, the president is to seek the assistance of the foreign countries,” it said in a statement.
The president will also declare a nationwide emergency that will go into effect at midnight on Monday. This measure, which will grant police and the military extensive powers to detain and interrogate without court orders, was in force at various times during the civil war with Tamil separatists.
Sri Lanka says attacks carried out by suicide bombers, international network involved

COLOMBO (Reuters) – Seven suicide bombers took part in the attacks on churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka that killed 290 people and wounded more than 500, an investigator said on Monday, while a government spokesman said an international network was involved.
Two of the suicide bombers blew themselves up at the luxury Shangri-La Hotel on Colombo’s seafront, said Ariyananda Welianga, a senior official at the government’s forensic division. The others targeted three churches and two other hotels.
A fourth hotel and a house in a suburb of the capital Colombo were also targeted, but it was not immediately clear how those attacks were carried out.
“Still the investigations are going on,” Welianga said.
There was no claim of responsibility for the Easter Sunday attacks, which mainly took place during church services or when hotel guests were sitting down for breakfast buffets.

Sri Lanka to seek help tracking international links to attacks
‘International network’ involved in Sri Lanka bombings: cabinet spokesman
“Guests who had come for breakfast were lying on the floor, blood all over,” an employee at Kingsbury Hotel, one of those targeted, told Reuters.
“We just picked up everyone, dead or alive and evacuated them.”
Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said an international network was involved, but did not elaborate.
“We do not believe these attacks were carried out by a group of people who were confined to this country,” Senaratne said. “There was an international network without which these attacks could not have succeeded.”
The president, Maithripala Sirisena, said in a statement the country will seek foreign assistance to track the international links.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe acknowledged on Sunday that the government had some prior information about possible attacks on churches involving a little-known local Islamist group.
A domestic intelligence report dated April 11 and seen by Reuters said a foreign intelligence agency had warned Sri Lankan authorities of possible attacks.
Four of the bombs went off at roughly the same time on Sunday, at 8.45 a.m., with two others coming within 20 minutes. The explosions at the fourth hotel and the house were in the afternoon.
Most of the dead and wounded were Sri Lankans although government officials said 32 foreigners were killed, including British, U.S., Turkish, Indian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch and Portuguese nationals.
Denmark’s richest man Anders Holch Povlsen and his wife lost three of their four children in the attacks, a spokesman for Povlsen’s fashion firm said.
The U.S. State Department said in a travel advisory “terrorist groups” were continuing to plot possible attacks in Sri Lanka and targets could include tourist spots, transport hubs, shopping malls, hotels, places of worship, airports and other public areas.

The government announced a curfew in Colombo from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m.
Separately, the president said a nationwide emergency will go into effect at midnight local time on Monday, granting police and the military extensive powers to detain and interrogate suspects without court orders.
SECTARIAN VIOLENCE
There were fears the attacks could spark a renewal of communal violence, with police also reporting late on Sunday there had been a petrol bomb attack on a mosque in the northwest and arson attacks on two shops owned by Muslims in the west.
Buddhist-majority Sri Lanka was at war for decades with ethnic minority Tamil separatists but violence had largely ended since the government victory in the civil war, 10 years ago.
Sri Lanka’s 22 million people include minority Christians, Muslims and Hindus.
Police said on Monday that 24 people had been arrested, all of whom were Sri Lankan.

The Sri Lankan military, who were clearing the route from Colombo airport late on Sunday in preparation for the return of President Sirisena from an overseas visit, found a crude bomb near the departure gate, an air force spokesman said.
They destroyed the device in a controlled explosion.
Traffic was uncharacteristically thin in normally bustling Colombo after an island-wide curfew was lifted earlier Monday.
Soldiers with automatic weapons stood guard outside major hotels and the World Trade Center in the business district, where the four hotels were targeted, a Reuters witness said.

Scores of people who were stranded overnight at the main airport began making their way home as restrictions were lifted.
The government also blocked access to social media and messaging sites, including Facebook and WhatsApp, making information hard to gather.
Victims of the attacks included a British mother and son at breakfast at the Shangri-La, British media reported.
An Australian survivor, identified only as Sam, told Australia’s 3AW radio the hotel was a scene of “absolute carnage”.
He said he and a travel partner were having breakfast at the Shangri-La when two blasts went off. He said he had seen two men wearing backpacks seconds before the blasts.
“There were people screaming and dead bodies all around,” he said. “Kids crying, kids on the ground, I don’t know if they were dead or not, just crazy.”
There were similar scenes of carnage at two churches in or near Colombo, and a third church in the northeast town of Batticaloa, where worshippers had gathered for Easter Sunday services. Pictures from the scene showed bodies on the ground and blood-spattered pews and statues.
Dozens were killed in one of the blasts at the Gothic-style St. Sebastian church in Katuwapitiya, north of Colombo. Police said they suspected that blast was a suicide attack.
DOMESTIC FEUD
Questions over why the intelligence report was not acted upon could feed into a feud between the prime minister and the president.
Sirisena fired the premier last year and installed opposition strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa in his stead. Weeks later, he was forced to re-instate Wickremesinghe because of pressure from the Supreme Court but their relationship is still fraught as a presidential election nears.

WSJ – Sri Lanka Points to Islamist Militants in Easter Bombing Attacks
Authorities take 24 people into custody; social-media services remain blocked after bombings kill nearly 300
+ video & 21 pics
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka—Sri Lankan officials believe an Islamist militant group was behind the Easter morning attacks on churches and luxury hotels that killed at least 290 people and wounded another 500, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne told reporters.
Officials had said previously that another country had warned that the group, known as National Thowheed Jamath, was planning attacks in Sri Lanka, but the warnings weren’t specific enough to effectively act on and didn’t include hotels or tourist sites as potential targets.
Mr. Senaratne said there is no specific evidence connecting the group to the bombings, but that authorities see it as the most likely organizer. He said all the bombers were Sri Lankan citizens.
Police said yet another explosive device was discovered Monday in a parcel inside a vehicle parked in Colombo near St. Anthony’s Shrine, which was attacked on Sunday. The bomb was disposed of with a controlled explosion, they said, and there were no injuries.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Authorities took 24 people into custody in connection with the bombings, making arrests in several locations in and near the capital, Colombo, where the bombings were focused. Police said they discovered 87 detonators, apparently abandoned, at a private bus stand in the capital. The government has ordered round-the-clock security at all churches.
There were at least eight explosions, most blamed on suicide bombers. Six of the attacks were coordinated and were carried out by seven suicide bombers, according to a preliminary examination of scattered body parts by the country’s official experts. Two men appear to have blown themselves up at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo, said Ariyananda Welianga, a government investigator who studied the bodies, while single bombers attacked two other high-profile hotels and three churches.
The suspected bombers’ heads and limbs were severed from their torsos in a way consistent with suicide attacks, Mr. Welianga said. His experience with such cases goes back to Sri Lanka’s civil war, during which a Tamil insurgent group carried out suicide bombings, he said. The civil war ended in 2009.
The analysis of material recovered from the explosion sites also showed that metal balls had been attached to the bombs to inflict shrapnel injuries in addition to blast injuries, Mr. Welianga said.
Authorities on Monday imposed a new curfew on the country for the evening and continued to block social-media services such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Snapchat. Government officials have argued that social media encourages the spread of misinformation.
After President Maithripala Sirisena held a meeting of the government’s security counsel, his office announced that a state of emergency would go into effect at midnight. That will allow the military to make arrests and detain people for extended periods without charging them in court.
Sri Lanka, an island nation of 21 million people dominated by a Sinhalese-speaking Buddhist majority, was torn for decades by a brutal civil war between the government and a Tamil-speaking militant group, known as the Tamil Tigers, which was among the first to employ suicide bombings. The country also has a number of religious minorities, including Muslims, who make up about 10% of the population, and Christians, about 7%.

RT- Sri Lanka blasts: Colombo officials state international network involvement in bombings
An international network helped to perpetrate the bloody Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka, the nation’s health minister said. The series of coordinated bombings killed 290 people and left hundreds injured.
‘We do not believe these attacks were carried out by a group of people who were confined to this country,’ Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Rajitha Senaratne said on Monday.
He stated that there was ‘an international network’, without which the attacks ‘could not have succeeded’.

Sri Lanka: Police uncover 87 detonators at Colombo bus station
Police uncovered some 87 ‘low-explosive’ bomb detonators at the Bastian Mawatha private bus station in Colombo on Monday according to a government spokesperson, a day after after eight explosions rocked hotels and churches in and around the city.
According to reports, 75 devices were found in rubbish bins and the other 12 were spread on the ground at the station, which is located in the Pettah district of Colombo.
Footage shows police studying a case of devices, not confirmed to be the detonators, while luggage and documentation checks were carried out on passengers at the station.
An area inside the station’s vicinity was also cordoned off.
Nearly 300 people and another 500 were wounded in the attacks across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday.

YOUR GUIDE THROUGH THE MEDIA’S MORAL MAZE
The media has a narrative, one it shares with much of our political class and cultural elite. We all know what it is. It goes something like this:
? Gambling – fun
? Casual sex – normal
? Abortion – trivial
? Marriage – passé
? Adultery – no comment
? Divorce – inevitable
? Homosexuality – sacred
? Transgenderism – why not
? Men – domineering, probably violent
? Women – oppressed, permanently
? Children – expensive, bad for the environment
? Family – however it comes
? Disabled people – prenatally screened out
? Old people – outstaying welcome
? White people – discredited
? Immigration – always beneficial
? Border control – racist
? Climate change – indisputable
? Markets – exploitative
? Wealth – for taxing
? State – benign
? Freedom – cover for hate
? Diversity – never enough
? Conservatives – bigots
? Christians – benighted
? Muslims – victims
? Brexit – nativist fantasy
? Democracy – overrated
? Truth – flexible
This is the filter through which most of our elites see the world and present it to us. What ties it all together is a post-Christian, secularist vision of the world centred on the individual and the self and the identities it creates for itself. Truth is relative to the individual and anyone who tries to say otherwise, who asserts some absolute moral standard, must be silenced and their views suppressed. Will Jones

“The two countries signed an agreement boosting bilateral cooperation back in November 2016, specifically in the military sphere, as part of a wider effort to develop closer ties between the two nations.
Iranian Navy Commodore Hossein Khanzadi, who is currently in Beijing at the invitation of the country’s Navy Commander, Shen Jinlong, has stated that the two states can develop deeper cooperation in the naval sphere, Tasnim news agency reported.
“There are very good capacities for military cooperation between the navies of the two countries and we hope that this trip will lead to many achievements in this regard”, he said.
Khanzadi reportedly considered increasing cooperation between Iran and China at sea, in education, and in various technical military spheres.
The two countries have long been close partners in various fields, including the military. Many types of domestically-produced Iranian weaponry, such as air defence systems, naval missiles, armoured vehicles, artillery and small arms, are based on Chinese models. The two signed an agreement to boost defence cooperation in November 2016.
The two states also have close ties in the energy sphere despite US sanctions, imposed by Washington in November 2018 on Tehran. China’s CNPC recently replaced French energy company Total in an Iranian gas project, after the latter left due to US sanctions.”

‘Bizarre’ to Care More About Notre-Dame Fire Than Migrant Deaths, French Pupils Told (breitbart, Apr 22, 2019)
https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/04/22/french-pupils-notre-dame-bizarre/
“French high school students attending anti-racism sessions this week have been warned that it would be “bizarre” to feel greater emotion over the Notre-Dame cathedral fire than about the plight of migrants in the Mediterranean.
Retired professional footballer and the most capped player in the French national football team’s history, Lilian Thuram, denounced what he described as a “hierarchy” of emotion in which the destruction of the cathedral’s spire appeared to arouse more public grief than the drowning of illegal African immigrants.
Speaking at a press conference on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, where he had held ‘prejudice-fighting’ sessions with students at high schools across the French territory, Thuram commented humans are “emotional creatures” and that, “as a Parisian” it is “normal that we are affected” by events like the Notre-Dame fire.
“But there is an impression, sometimes, of there being hierarchies in place regarding these emotions,” the 47-year-old said, lamenting that “the world is not moved in the same way” at the sight of “people who die trying to cross the Mediterranean” as it appeared to by fire ravaging a more than 800-year-old church considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture and the most important icon of Christian France.

Paris: Illegal Migrant on Trial For Stabbing Eight, Apparently at Random (breitbart, Apr 21, 2019)
https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/04/22/paris-illegal-migrant-on-trial-for-stabbing-eight-apparently-at-random/
“An illegal underage Moroccan migrant is facing trial in Paris after he stabbed eight people, apparently at random, in northern Paris in February.
The incident took place in February with police arresting the Moroccan at around one o’clock in the morning on the 14th, with his clothes soaked in blood and a knife, also covered in blood, near him Le Parisien reports.
The stabbings occurred in the La Chapelle area, which has become increasingly known as a dangerous area and has seen the city of Paris vow to place guards in public spaces to increase safety for residents, announcing the measure earlier this week.
After his arrest, the young man, who was drunk, was not able to explain to police why he had stabbed eight people and was so intoxicated that he was not even able to provide police with a breathalyzer sample.
Witnesses say that the Moroccan began his rampage at around eleven o’clock at night by throwing an elderly individual to the ground and then attacking a passing woman. A man was then stabbed after coming to her defence.
Another person was stabbed after the migrant tried to steal their phone, then a nearby motorist and two others by the entrance of a subway station. A young woman was the last victim of the rampage along the rue de la Chapelle and was also struck several times by the Moroccan.
The alleged attacker attempted to deny the attacks but claims he has no memory of the stabbings and after being told his DNA was on the knife said, “Maybe someone has the same blood as me?”
Underage Moroccan migrants living on the streets of Paris and causing havoc have been an issue for the city for well over a year, with the city’s police partnering with Moroccan police last year in order to identify and deport troublemakers.
While police announced they had arrested around 1,500 minor migrants last October, only six were actually deported back to their home country.”

Libyan force slows Tripoli push over concerns for civilians (abcnews, apr 21, 2019)
https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/death-toll-fighting-libyas-capital-254-62546955
“A self-styled Libyan army slowed down its push on the countrys capital over concerns for civilians caught up in the violence as the U.N. refugee agency said Monday that the fighting for Tripoli has displaced more than 32,000 people.
Fighting erupted on April 5, pitting the self-styled Libyan National Army, led by commander Khalifa Hifter and aligned with a rival government in the east, against militias affiliated with Tripolis U.N.-supported government.
The clashes threaten to ignite a new civil war in Libya on the scale of the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
The death toll from this months fighting climbed to 254, including combatants and civilians, the World Health Organization said Sunday. At least 34 more people died in the past two days, WHO said; 1,228 were wounded.
Since launching his push, which many see as a power grab for Tripoli, Hifters forces have captured the districts of Gharyan and Qasr Bani Ghashi,r along with several smaller towns. They also seized the capitals shuttered old airport.
Fighting is now underway for control of Ain Zara and Azizyia, two larger towns near Tripoli, and in the Abu Salim district, about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from Tripoli center.
Abdelhadi Lahouij, the top diplomat for the east-based government, told The Associated Press in Tunis on Sunday that Hifters push was slowed down because of concerns for civilians in the greater Tripoli area, estimated to number about 3 million.
If the civilians had not been taken into account, the battle would not have lasted even a week, he said.
The army is today 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from Tripoli. It controls the (old) airport and the bridge that connects the airport to the city center, Lahouij said.
He also lauded President Donald Trumps call to Hifter last week expressing U.S. support for the Libyan commanders perceived stance against terrorism and Hifters role in securing Libyas oil resources.
A White House statement on Friday also said the two discussed a shared vision for Libyas transition to a stable, democratic political system.
Trumps phone call was a step in the right direction, Lahouij said.
Since Gahdafis ouster, Libya has slid into chaos, governed by rival authorities in the east and in Tripoli, each backed by various militias and armed groups fighting over resources and territory.
Hifter has vowed to unify the country. He has led previous campaigns against Islamic militants and other rivals in eastern Libya, and has received support from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Russia and France.

“Greek authorities say dozens of asylum-seekers have turned up at the home address of European border agency employees helping police the border with Turkey.
Police say 61 men, women and children who had just crossed illegally from Turkey headed straight for the rented flats of German and Dutch employees of the Frontex agency in the town of Orestiada before dawn Monday, and started ringing doorbells.
The migrants said they were from Syria and Iraq and wanted to register for asylum. Greek police were called to handle the process.
Police said it was unclear how the migrants found the Frontex employees home address, and why they didnt go directly to a police station. Syrian and Iraqi refugees have little trouble securing asylum in Greece.”
I bet some activist group gave them these addresses. Sounds like an intimidation tactic to me.

“The United States has not renewed sanctions waivers to eight countries importing oil from Iran, applying further economic pressure on the regime in Tehran to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero.
President Donald Trump decided not to reissue the Significant Reduction Exceptions when they expire in early May meaning that the buyers of Iran’s oil must end their transactions by May 2 or face sanctions.
Last November, the US reimposed sanctions targeting Iran’s oil sector, following Mr Trump’s exit from the 2015 nuclear deal agreed by his predecessor Barack Obama.
However, Washington had granted waivers to China, India, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey, to continue importing oil from Iran.
With the exemptions ending in 12 days, these countries are forced to terminate their purchases from Iran or face the threat of US sanctions.”

“Kosovo families waited Monday outside a shelter, trying to talk with relatives who have been repatriated from Syria and are eager to get home.
On Saturday, 110 Kosovar citizens — four alleged foreign fighters, 32 women and 74 children — were brought back home with the assistance of the United States.
The return of such a big group is a first for Europe. Experts say getting the families reintegrated into the society will be a hard challenge for Kosovo authorities and the families themselves…”
Children sickened in Pakistan after polio vaccinations (abcnews, Apr 21, 2019)

“Hundreds of school children in Pakistan were taken to hospitals Monday complaining of nausea and vomiting after being given polio vaccinations, officials said.
They said angry family members responded by storming a local health facility in Peshawar and setting it ablaze.
The incident deals another blow to efforts to eradicate the disease, which have been hindered by widespread distrust in some areas. Islamic extremists have targeted polio workers and stoked conspiracy theories that the vaccinations are part of a Western plot to sterilize Muslims.
Pakistan, neighboring Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only three countries where polio is still endemic.”

3 Ways Government Prevents Solutions to Homelessness
What Was Obama’s Role in the Trump Investigations?

The old ventriloquist was tired. A life on the road had taken its toll. The toll it had taken had made him so old.
He knew it but refused to admit it. Others were too polite to say so. The result was a frail old man who trudged on cynically to his stage, town after town day after day, becoming increasingly sad and absurd.Quite often now the audience left shaking their heads with pity.
Years ago when he started out the world was a different place. He and Jack were friends back then. Everything was exciting and new. Their first show was in a church basement in Watertown, New York on August 15th, 1971. From that day on they had taken on the world together as a big adventure. Some called it a dog’s life–always on the move and living out of a suitcase. Not them. The “Jack and Jimmy Show”, as they were known, thirsted for every venue large and small. Of course much of it had to do with youthful vigor. But seeing the country and having a girl in every port, so to speak, was a pretty good gig for any young man. Jack was especially good with the ladies. He could talk them into a date almost at will and took great advantage of a stage that exerted considerable power over some women. He presented himself as the sensitive type. He endeared himself by being a good listener. It was his style of manipulation. While not particularly bright, Jack did understand the dynamics of this thing called stage. In fact when he was not gigging he substituted women for stage in a fairly grotesque display of ego. The girlfriend’s role was to clap and fawn over his every utterance no matter how stupid or pedestrian his remarks. Such was his extraordinary fragility. Depending on the dependent nature of the woman, it often took her quite some time to notice that Jack was only made of wood. She was blinded by all the sweet talk and promises of the good life. Shortly after discovering his true, unanimated nature, the woman always left. She would be hurt, disappointed and ashamed for her stupidity. Without fail she then sought out real flesh and bone. A man without stage may be a little boring, but at least he was real.
Jimmy, on the other hand, was shy and more serious. He booked the gigs, wrote most of the material and paid the bills. He possessed much less of the entertainer’s moxie and gift for gab. He didn’t need the stage the same way Jack did. Together they had built their act around Jack’s natural charisma, with Jimmy playing the straight man. Front man Jack offered something for everyone. He bragged that no matter how bad Jimmy’s jokes were he could make up better stuff on the spot. The only reason he hadn’t taken over the entertainment world, he yammered, was because he was a lazy genius. Jack said jokes were a currency that he could print at will.
Jimmy was far more modest. He stuck with gags that worked and stayed away from bits that were edgy or daring. It was a recipe that had worked for more than forty years. It had provided them a living–they weren’t rich by any stretch–but they both had been firmly compensated to middle-class standards.
But now times were changing. The crowds were getting smaller. People were more cynical and Jimmy wondered if this was why he was becoming cynical. He hated this about himself. Audiences wanted more dirty jokes and political satire. Jack had no qualms pandering to the most base instincts of humanity. Jimmy fought it every step of the way. Gone was the wholesome innocence of the old days. Jack, ever-more desperate for his waning stage, exerted ever-more control over Jimmy. It was not unusual now for Jack to make Jimmy’s lips move by placing words in his mouth. It was an uncomfortable wrestling match to behold. Young children shouted “I see the man’s lips moving, Mama!” Audiences were not impressed. The duo argued frequently over the most trivial matters and rarely spoke off stage. Long silences on long hauls between towns had become an acrimonious chore. The writing was on the wall and they both saw it. Jimmy tried to imagine life without working but could not. Then one night, as they traveled in their old Chevrolet between St. Louis and Kansas City, Jack broke the silence.
“Turn down the radio for a second, will ya?”
“No. I like this song.”
“Just turn down the goddamned radio. You’ve heard this tune a million times.” Jimmy turned it down. “I’ve been thinking. We need some fresh blood,” Jack declared in such a way that it was finally a relief to say words that for so long needed to be said. “I’ve been thinking we should add something to the act–.”
“–The act is fine,” Jimmy interrupted.
“No, the act is not goddamned fine. The act is dying and you know it. If you can’t see this by now you’re blind AND dumb. Now I–.”
Jimmy interrupted again. They were like a quarreling old married couple. “The last bright idea you had almost landed us in jail with that little porno spiel you came up with in Syracuse. Remember that? Imagine saying that stuff in front of kids. No thanks.” Jimmy reached to turn the radio back up but Jack grabbed his wrist.
“Listen. I know a guy who does a pretty good magic act. He can pull a rabbit outta the Pope’s ass. –Very talented guy. I think he’s our ticket. Let’s give him a try. I told him he can open for us in Kansas City.”
“Let him pull a rabbit out of YOUR ass, then. –And thanks for checking with me before making arrangements.”
“Right,” Jack shot back. “For a guy who’s had his arm up MY ass for the last forty years that’s pretty rich.”
And with this quick, eloquent exchange, after forty-eight years, the Jack and Jimmy Show went from being a duo to being a rather tumultuous trio. The Kansas City date went just alright. Jimmy took an immediate disliking to the newcomer but kept his thoughts mostly to himself. Conversely, Jack was like an excited school girl. The new guy could do no wrong. No matter how badly he screwed up, Jack defended him. In St. Paul Minnesota the magician pulled a rabbit out of his hat but the rabbit, tragically, had a heart attack and died. The children in the audience gasped and buried their heads in their mothers’ chests. Parents asked for their money back. After the show Jimmy blew up.
“What the hell was that?” he stormed to Jack.
“Lower your voice! He may hear you. –It was just goddamned lousy luck, is all.”
“The people didn’t know the stupid rabbit just died. For all they know your friend was using a dead rabbit for some sick joke. I don’t blame them for being mad. I don’t blame them one bit.”
The new partner would turn out to be even more aggressive than Jack’s insatiable ego. He called himself The Great Ali Baba. He ran a hackneyed shtick that Jack gobbled up but Jimmy saw right through. In fact, Jimmy couldn’t believe how such a terrible magician could ever exist. Every clumsy trick had a visible mistake, and yet somehow he managed to fool a lot of the people. It quickly became clear to Jimmy that the opportunistic Great Ali Baba had pounced on the chance to ride the coattails of an established act. Yes, they weren’t spring chickens, but a bum like this could never make it on his own. And while he did all of the same old tired slight-of-hand moves, he remained for many something novel and even exotic. He wore a fez and brandished a curved sword with fake jewels in the handle. He wore a cape and spoke with a fake accent to make himself seem mysterious. Sometimes he even wore his costume off stage. Gimme a break, thought Jimmy. This phony belonged in a circus sideshow. Days and weeks passed, though, and with time came an ever-greater investment in their new set-up. Jimmy regretted agreeing to any of it, but now even he was getting used to it. Sometimes it was easier just to go along to get along.
The show was more horrible than ever. Audiences continued to dwindle. Jack admitted to none of their deteriorating plight. Jimmy was positive that Jack was in the early stages of a quickly-advancing dementia.
It only took a couple of weeks before Jack gave up his spot in the front passenger seat when driving between gigs. He didn’t mind the back seat, he told himself. In fact it was a pleasure to sit in the back. At least he was making an effort to keep the show on the road, unlike Jimmy. Little gestures such as this went a long way toward making Ali Baba feel more included. –More integral to the act. Now, he could just enjoy the ride, satisfied that he was doing his part.
Only six weeks into their experiment things went from bad to worse. They were on a dark stretch of highway in Vermont. Jimmy gave his head a shake. He was nodding off at the wheel. It had been a long day.
“Pull over,” Jack said from the back. “You’re falling asleep.”
“I’m fine,” said Jimmy. “–Just need air.” He rolled down his window to let the cold air rush in.
“Pull over, goddamnit. Give Ali the wheel. You can drive can’t you, Ali?”
“Of course,” said Ali in his fake accent.
Jimmy didn’t have a handy argument. He pulled over to the shoulder of the road and they switched places. He had never sat on the passenger side of his car. It was a very strange feeling. His feet wanted to press the brake. His hands wanted to steer. Ali had a heavy foot. He drove faster than Jimmy ever did.
“Slow down. What’s the rush?” said Jimmy. Ali ignored him. Somewhere before Arlington they came to a stop sign at a quiet four-way. Ali blew right through it. “What was that?” asked Jimmy irritated, “–you just ran that stop sign.”
“There’s no one around,” Jack piped up from behind.
On the outskirts of town Ali ran a red light. “What the fuck are you doing, you idiot?” shouted Jimmy. He was getting nervous.
“That’s no way to talk to him!” hollered Jack.
“You’re the idiot!” bellowed The Great Ali Baba suddenly. He seemed adrenalized and he shocked both Jimmy and Jack with his eruption. He had been so calm and quiet up till now. “Why do you want to stop for a stupid red light in the middle of nowhere?” He sped up even more. “Why let a mechanical device tell you what to do? How long will you sit there, like a dummy, until some man-made gadget tells you you can go?” The magician drove faster, still. Jack became frightened, too. “I will not be ruled by a man-made gizmo!” railed the maniac.
“Maybe you should slow’er down a bit there, Ali,” said Jack nervously. “And who you calling a dummy? There’s no ne–.”
“–Shut-up you stupid little puppet,” Ali snapped. You’re even more idiotic than this one,” he spat nodding toward Jimmy. “You people are so gullible. You deserve what you get!”
The old Chevrolet, which Jimmy had purchased new with the help of some money his dear father had loaned him, was built in 1971 in Detroit, Michigan. It had been a very reliable car. It was hurtling over eighty miles-per-hour now. As they entered the city limits they ran another red light, but this time a pick-up truck was passing slowly through the intersection. The Chevy swerved to avoid the truck but The Great Ali Baba lost control. In 1971 the wearing of seat belts was optional. Even now if you drive an old car of that vintage you are not required by law, in many jurisdictions, to wear seat belts even if the option was installed. Yes, they saved lives, but still there was something most civilized about a person having the right make their own choices.
In the battle of physical wits between the car and the massive oak tree that it struck when it careened out of control, the tree won. The Great Ali Baba was pronounced dead at the scene, suffering severe trauma to the head. Jack, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown through the front windshield and splintered into many little pieces. By the grace of God Jimmy was also thrown clear of the wreckage but survived with a broken arm and some serious bruises. In time he managed to glue Jack back together. The dummy never spoke another word. Jimmy was grateful for this, and put Jack high on a shelf where he belonged, just to collect dust.

RT -Are journalists covering Yellow Vest protests being targeted? 2 reporters arrested during riots
Journalist organisations have condemned French police after 2 reporters were detained on Saturday – during the 23rd consecutive weekend of the Yellow Vest protests.
‘There’s a question emerging: is there a determination to intimidate journalists? We have an impression some of them are being targeted’ – Vincent Lanier, The National Union of Journalists
‘Since the ‘Yellow Vest’ movement appeared, the number of incidents targeting journalists… when they are filming or photographing, hampers the work of the press and limits the coverage of events which represent crucial public interest’ – Catherine Monnet, Reporters without borders
If they aren’t reporting what Macron wants yes they are being targeted.

ISIS is on the rebound, establishing ‘attack zones’ and ‘support zones’
ISIS’S ZONE OFFENSE: ISIS may have lost its last “zone of territorial control” in Syria last month, but its Plan B is gaining momentum across Iraq and Syria, according to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War.
A new map prepared by ISW breaks down ISIS’s resurgent campaign into three zones: a small “control zone” where the group still exerts some form of physical or psychological pressure on the local population, various “support zones” where it is free of significant military action against it, and “attack zones” where ISIS is conducting offensive maneuvers.

NYC Mayor de Blasio: ‘We Are Going to Ban’ Glass and Steel Skyscrapers
By Aidan McLaughlinApr 22nd, 2019, 9:47 am
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said on MSNBC Monday morning his city will ban “inefficient” steel and glass skyscrapers as part of their Green New Deal.
While Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal sputtered in Washington D.C., her home city of New York has embraced key pillars of the plan.
When asked about it on Morning Joe, de Blasio outlined the proposal.
“We are making the Green New Deal come alive here in New York City,” he said. “It’s three very basic ideas. One, the biggest source of emissions in New York City is buildings.”
De Blasio said “strong mandates” for buildings will “guarantee we reduce emissions” — and buildings that do not comply by 2030 will face fines “as high as $1 million or more.”

Florida cops snuck cameras into massage parlors years before Robert Kraft’s prostitution sting
Billionaire Robert Kraft’s lawyers claim police clearly violated the law when they secretly planted cameras inside a massage parlor. But it wasn’t the first time cops have used the controversial tactic.
In South Florida, the police have used court-approved warrants to spy on and record private rubdowns for prostitution stings. Officers in Boca Raton used secret cameras for similar massage-parlor crackdowns at least twice — in 2007 and 2014, charging dozens of johns and madams, records show.

‘Morning Joe’ calls for TV ban of Kellyanne, Giuliani, Sarah Sanders

Trump haters seem never to tire of calling the president “Hitler” or comparing him to the mass-murdering tyrant.
It’s not just the ignorant masses who attempt to draw a connection. Danielle Allen, who teaches ethics at Harvard, warned in February 2016 that Trump is the reincarnation of Hitler, and that Americans must do everything in their power to prevent his rise to president. Nor is the name-calling limited to the Left. Last October, never-Trumper Bruce Bartlett, who held senior policy positions under Reagan and Bush 41, posted a tweet in which he argued that Trump is actually worse than Hitler:

During the 1960s the ideological parents of the Propaganda Media would tell the conservatives that come the revolution all conservatives would be stood against a wall and shot. Now they are working to create the civil war that will allow the far left to murder everyone who disagrees with them.
Fortune magazine names Robert Mueller one of the ‘top 10 world’s greatest leaders’
By Daily Caller News Foundation April 22, 2019
Fortune magazine named special counsel Robert Mueller number three on its list of the “Top 10 World’s Greatest Leaders” Thursday.
“Few people on either side of the partisan divide seem satisfied with the outcome of Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections,” Fortune wrote in its profile of Mueller. “But that very dissatisfaction speaks to the nobly impartial example the former FBI director set as he led an arduous, sensitive investigation.”
“He and his team didn’t uncover the smoking guns that President Trump’s critics craved, nor did they grant the president the exoneration he demanded. Instead, sticking to the evidence and tuning out the hype, they exposed serious wrongdoing and shed light on systemic flaws that the nation is now more likely to address,” the profile continued.

Ocasio-Cortez lists tax cuts and the Census as reasons to impeach Trump
By Rusty Weiss April 21, 2019
The phrase ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ must be too many syllables for her to understand.
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was asked during an interview on Yahoo News’ “Skullduggery” podcast this past weekend if she supports impeaching President Trump.
As with most thoughts, the Democrat socialist struggled to convey any rational reasons for supporting such a bold and significant move.
“I think you could reach in a bag and pull so many things out that are impeachable of this president,” she claimed. “I support impeaching this president.”

It’s hard to care when a billionaire suffers abuse at the hands of our justice system. But the case of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has been a travesty, and we should all pay attention.
In February, when Kraft was arrested on charges of soliciting prostitution at the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Fla., the media coverage immediately gravitated to the alleged human-trafficking angle.
A few days after the arrest, Chief Assistant State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl said it was unclear how many trafficked women were employed at the spa.
“It could be anywhere from two to five (victims) at this stage, but I’m not positive,” he said. “Those who have been identified as potential victims are being cared for; I have been informed of that.”
At a press conference about the arrests, Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said, “Modern-day slavery can happen anywhere, including in the peaceful community of Jupiter.”

Physics Professor William Happer: We’re in a carbon drought
Submitted by dc on 04/09/2019 – 20:27.
The global warming scam is one of the remaining last lines of defense for the left. They hold onto it for dear life because once it officially collapses, lots of do-nothings are going to go broke and will have to #learntocode.
This short interview from 2015 with a real scientist gives you another perspective into the scam. From the video’s description:
We’re in a carbon drought. That is according to Professor William Happer of Princeton University. The renowned physicist says when it comes to carbon dioxide, there’s more good than bad. He goes on to say most of carbon dioxide’s effect has already happened. He points to the logarithmic dependence of temperature on carbon dioxide levels. Happer says the unique properties of carbon dioxide mean that current levels would need to double for another one-degree increase in temperature and they’d have to double again for another one degree rise.

If Binney is interpreting this correctly?—?and bear in mind that, not only is he extraordinarily bright, but he is sometimes referred to as “the father of the NSA”?—?this provides strong support for the hypothesis that Seth was indeed Wikileaks’ source for the DNC emails it published. Assange has strongly hinted at this, Sy Hersh claims to have a trusted informant inside the FBI who states that he has seen FBI documents verifying this, and Binney himself says that he has two sources inside the intel community vouching for this.

ISIS member tasked with ‘bringing in migrants,’ newly obtained terror group documents show
ISIS has tasked one of its terror bosses with moving militants out of Syria and into Europe, newly procured documents show.
Newly obtained documents by The Sunday Times show ISIS has a member tasked with “bringing in migrants and taking out brothers who have been given jobs” as a way to move fighters and money from Syria through Turkey into Europe.
The documents were obtained by the paper after being found on a hard drive dropped by members of an ISIS cell during a battle near the group’s tiny remaining stronghold in Syria earlier this year.
In a bid to stay relevant, the terror group — which recently lost nearly all of its self-proclaimed “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria — is planning to launch a fresh wave of attacks in Europe and the Middle East inspired by past atrocities: the 2015 Paris attacks that killed 130 people and 2017 truck attack in New York City that left eight dead.

The controversial and unapologetic critic of Israel and Jews Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar raised an impressive $832,000 in just three months in Congress. Politicians must report the names and addresses of donors who give over $200 per election cycle.
