Contributor’s Links post for February 16th, 2019

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

  1. Gay Priests to Pope: Don’t Blame Us for Child Sex Abuse

“We have the distinct impression,” the Dutch group wrote to Francis, “that the Vatican and the Congregation for the Clergy and perhaps even you yourself tend to suggest that those priests who are openly gay are the ones responsible for the sexual abuse of children and minors.”

“A SPICE GIRLS fan who used her student loan to flee to Syria with her toddler and join Islamic State (ISIS) has been released from prison.

Tareena Shakil, 29, was locked up for six years in 2016 after joining the crazed jihadists in Raqqa and taking her son with her.

She told her family she was going on holiday to Turkey. But instead she crossed the border into war-torn Syria where she would dress her son in ISIS-branded clothing and teach him to say ‘allahu akbar’.

She took selfies wearing ISIS clothing and holding AK47s, and declared she wanted to “die as a martyr”.

The Towie-watching mother became the first Briton to be jailed for joining ISIS in February 2016.

During her sentencing the judge said the mother, of Burton, Staffordshire, purposely went to war-torn region “to produce the next generation of fighters”.

She was convicted by a jury of encouraging acts of terrorism on social media and being a member of Islamic State.

After the sentencing, Shakil’s career criminal father Mohammed Shakil, 47, said the trial was a “farce”.

Instead of inciting terrorism, he said she was a victim of ISIS…”

  5. Erdogan Slams US Stance on Gulen Extradition Case – Reports (sputniknews, Feb 16, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201902161072477867-usa-turkey-erdogan-gulen-extradition/

“Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused US authorities of acting insincerely over Washington’s reluctance to extradite Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is considered by Ankara as the main person behind a 2016 coup attempt.

“Unfortunately, the United States is still acting insincerely”, Erdogan told the broadcaster A Haber, expressing his regret over “Washington’s unconstructive position” concerning the extradition of Gulen.

After a failed coup that occurred in mid-2016, Ankara detained thousands of journalists, diplomats, judges, members of the military, and human rights activists, accusing them of having a role in the attempted government overthrow and having ties to Gulen. The cleric, living in self-imposed exile in the United States, said he was not involved.

The Turkish authorities have repeatedly sent extradition requests to the US, but Washington has refused to hand over Gulen, who has been residing in the United States since 1999.

In December, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that during a G20 summit in Argentina, US President Donald Trump told Erdogan that the US authorities were working on Gulen’s extradition. However, the White House subsequently argued that Washington had not agreed to extradite the cleric during the high-level conversation.
According to Anakara, the movement of Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, which Turkish authorities refer to as the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), played a key role in the military takeover attempt in 2016.”

  6. Sending Human Skeletons Out to Sea to Die

Those pushed out to sea in recent weeks are part of a shifting trend in Mediterranean migration. It used to be that migrants paid vast sums of money to smugglers to move them across the Mediterranean, or at least as far as NGO rescue boats which would take them the rest of the way to Italy.

Now the real money is made inside the detention centers where militia groups tied to the smuggling families run extortion rackets. They only send them to sea when they can’t get any more out of them and want to make room for new victims.

When new migrants and refugees arrive in the detention centers, they say they are often tortured or raped with the promise that it will stop if their families back home just send more money.

  7. School boys ‘wanted every young lady to feel special.’ So they gave them all Valentine’s Day flowers

A group of middle school boys in Kansas made sure Valentine’s Day was special for every girl in their school: They gave all of them a flower.

Photos posted to social media on Thursday by Summit Trail Middle School in Olathe, Kansas, show the grinning boys holding a bucket of bright pink carnations. Dozens of girls are also pictured posing with their flowers.

The boys’ generosity was a carefully planned effort, according to the school’s principal. Sarah Guerrero told USA TODAY on Thursday that one of boys approached her with the idea a few weeks ago.

Tristan Valentine, an eighth-grader, wanted to do something special for Valentine’s Day, Guerrero said. “He wanted every young lady to feel special that day and accepted.”

Valentine and two other boys arranged the funding and used some of their own money to buy the flowers, according to Guerrero.

They carefully planned how they would distribute the gifts at various school doors on Valentine’s Day, doing their best to make sure no one was skipped. They distributed the flowers with words of encouragement, she said.

    “Happy Valentine’s Day”

    “Hope you feel special today”

They even gave the male staff members carnations, Guerrero said.

In total about 270 girls and 70 staff members were given flowers. To some, it was a touching moment.

    • Have reached out just now to the article’s author.

Major commentators such as Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson at his own network, FOX News, have been mentioned by Donald Trump in yesterday’s Rose Garden press conference.

Believe that they and maybe Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh and others could move the needle on this case.

    • The problem is that the bureaucrats running the military aren’t warriors and tend to avoid combat beyond the amount necessary to get combat experience on their record. They forget or never new the worry about keeping your people alive in the fight. They and our politicians have decided to put police type restrictions on combat soldiers. These restrictions are costing us causalities and preventing a happy end to the war.

  8. Study reveals unsettling multidrug antibiotic resistance in remote Arctic soil microbes

A University of Kansas geologist’s work in the remote High Arctic of Norway has exposed the startling global spread of antibiotic-resistant microbes—including multidrug-resistant “superbugs”—that could have dire implications for human health worldwide.

Jennifer Roberts, professor and chair of geology at KU, began by investigating the microbial geochemistry of thawing permafrost and its release of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that speeds global climate change.

But follow-up analysis of the soil samples Roberts collected in the Kongsfjorden region of Svalbard, Norway, also showed that antibiotic-resistant genes have transferred into soil-microbe populations in one of Earth’s most remote locations. The findings by Roberts and an international team of colleagues from the United Kingdom and China were just published in the peer-reviewed journal Environment International.

“The study offered a good opportunity to test soil samples for antibiotic genes with the hypothesis that Svalbard was such a remote and isolated place, we wouldn’t find any evidence of such genes,” Roberts said. “In contrast, we found quite a few including superbug antibiotic-resistant genes like the New Delhi gene, which first emerged in India not very long ago. This was a surprise—the genes we found clearly had a short transfer time between being discovered in India and our group detecting them in the Arctic only a few years later.”

The research team genetically sequenced DNA from 40 samples of soil at eight locations in Svalbard, finding 131 antibiotic-resistant genes. One antibiotic-resistant gene found is called blaNDM-1. Initially detected in New Delhi in 2007, the gene triggers resistance to carbapenem antibiotics—a last-resort remedy for otherwise untreatable infectious disease. The demonstrated spread of blaNDM-1, in particular, is highly concerning, drawing attention to the rising crisis of global antibiotic resistance.

The researchers say the antibiotic-resistant genes could have taken only a few pathways to the Arctic.

“They likely originated from pathogens that were exposed multiple times to different types of antibiotics—that’s how we get these acutely antibiotic-resistant strains, where they persist even despite the use of ‘last-resort’ treatments,” Roberts said. “Some of the sites where we found the New Delhi strain of gene aren’t terribly far from the main research base, so there’s a possibility human waste was involved. We also observed colonies of nesting birds in low-elevation places, like small lakes and other sources of open water during maximum thaw, and that was where we saw the highest concentrations of these genes. We also detected them in places that didn’t have open water but had a lot of small animals like foxes, and you can trace a vector between a watering hole or small lake where you have lots of birds and small mammals going to drink and then picking up whatever genes are there.”

Roberts, whose research expertise is in hydrochemistry and microbial geochemistry, worked to develop a benchmark for antibiotic-resistant genes naturally found in Svalbard so the team could distinguish them from “foreign” multidrug-resistant genes transferred to the Arctic from regions where antibiotics are used in human and animal populations to treat disease.

“Because the migration of these genes is of such great concern, the next question becomes, ‘Are these antibiotic-resistant genes native—or did they get transferred?'” she said. “My role was to use lines of evidence in our research to help us be clear about what was a native gene that developed in soil and what was brought in from other sources. We did that by looking at nutritional supplies in soil, which are very, very low in these Arctic soils. We were then able to link the antibiotic-resistant genes to what appears to be a new source of phosphate being brought in from outside—and the most likely source of phosphate is feces, either in human sewage or, more than likely, bird guano.”

According to Roberts, antibiotic resistance traveled between microbes via “lateral gene transfer.” In this process, pathogens travel into water through feces, die and release large quantities of free genetic material into the water. This genetic material does not easily degrade, with the result that other organisms end up picking up the genes—as well as their resistance.

“It’s not that we have some kind of robust community of E. coli or other pathogen living in the surface waters in the Arctic,” Roberts said. “Instead, some antibiotic-resistant pathogen was brought in from outside sources—and now that resistance has been dispersed as genes are picked up by other organisms that were already populous in the environment.”

Roberts said the team’s discovery shows multidrug antibiotic resistance is now global in nature.

“We have to remember that we got antibiotics, like penicillin, from soil microorganisms to begin with,” she said. “Microorganisms have used resistance capabilities to overcome immunities in the environment for a long time, producing antibiotic-resistant genes that are considered natural and native. But with the use of manufactured antibiotics for humans and animals all over the world, we’ve seen rapid evolution of resistant genes. We found both native and evolved antibiotic-resistant genes in the Arctic. The concern is that with resistance spreading on this scale, we may be approaching a post-antibiotic era where none of our antibiotics work because the pathogens we’re trying to fight have picked up resistant genes via evolution or lateral transfer.”

Roberts said the team’s findings show the importance of more careful stewardship of antibiotic use and the need for better treatment of wastewater around the world.

“Our human and animal use of antibiotics can have impacts that are beyond ourselves and beyond our local communities—they are global,” she said. “It’s really important for us to start thinking of water system management and antibiotics use in ways that are global—and to start reducing and controlling some of the spread that is clearly not controlled at the moment.”

NR: Insanely risky vectored super-drug-resistance aside, that whole, “Jennifer Roberts, professor and chair of geology at KU, began by investigating the microbial geochemistry of thawing permafrost and its release of methane…”, is no small matter.

In the polar regions, especially the Arctic, there are potentially mammoth sequestrations of semi-solid methane hydrate in deep, underwater, subterranean seabed deposits.

NOTE: — Just as with carbon sequestration models for pumping Co2 down into empty undersea oil deposits, so has there been revived interest in subsurface maritime methane hydrate beds. The reduced temperature and immense saltwater pressures cause phase transitions from gaseous or saturated-vapor states over to a dense slush or solid. —

As an example, one article cites:

… some 2.5 gigatonnes of methane hydrate along the continental slope of the eastern United States are currently subjected to destabilizing.

Face it, even the world’s largest active volcano would go out like a match if you dumped 2.5 gigatonnes of just pencil sharpener dust on it. These numbers are enough to imbalance even the most robust ecology.

If slowly warming Gulf Stream waters reach far enough North, then these submarine time-bombs could be released in a catastrophic cascade sequence that might pose a serious risk to life on earth.

As an example, there is a village in Africa that sits right next to a beautiful freshwater lake. The place is a ghost town.

More than once, scouting parties have found the entire village full of dead people, dropped where they stood or slumped over their daily chores without a mark on them.

Investigators finally traced the mystery back to a massive underground carbonaceous strata that periodically dissolves so much mineral mass into the lake that—like some terrestrial geysers—it periodically boils up in a gigantic gas bubble.

Each of these lake events vented enough (heavier-than-air) carbon dioxide to displace all surrounding oxygen so rapidly that suffocation of all surrounding life was near-instantaneous.

Below is a clip of Iceland’s Strokkur Geyser, one of the world’s most powerful surface-tension-regulated hydrothermal outflows.

Now, imagine this sort of eruption with 2.5 gigatonnes of methane compounds being liberated in just years instead of the usual millennia. All of us had damn well better hope that Earth is headed into a mini ice-age as the sun spots seem to indicate.

    • We’re overdue for kill-off.

Epidemiologists are betting on a novel, mutant swine-avian-human influenza: a “perfect storm” combo of incubation/latency, infectiousness, lethality. But who knows?

Pandemic flu isn’t the only candidate. Maybe a spore-borne pathogen piggy-backs on plague. In classical antiquity anthrax swept in together with Yersinia pestis. Wipe-out.

Today’s diverse toileting practices make for potent E. coli. That’s a germ that mutates rapidly, an inclusive bug, potentially intersectional with MDR-staph [a flesh-eater] or anything else. Hi, Justin!

CDC, et al., track emerging infectious diseases continuously. The U.S. has protocols in place, quarantine stations ready. But all that’s intended for average Americans. Any given Little Somalia knocks off 30 IQ points. So plans need to be revised _bigly_.

Yes we are, one is coming I don’t know if someone will release some bio weapons or if the unsanitary conditions created by the invaders in Europe and North America will turn loose a real nasty plague but one is coming.

With the rapid transport from one location to another any plague will spread to every nation and do it quickly. We are going to see mass burials like during the Black Death.

  9. Not exactly news but….
The Guardians BBC miniseries 1971…my father said: “it could never happen in the UK”.
Has anyone else watched it? He now says that it isn’t far off current reality there.

In a video clip on his Facebook page, he explains that Sweden, several months after the election, finally has got a “new” government.
One thing he reflects upon is that after elections in African countries there is often a fuss about who has won and whether the election was rigged or not.
Whoever holds the power in Africa tends to become despotic and prioritise power over the well-being of the country and its people.
Getting hold of the “jam jar”, and charing it with close friends (other politicians) is what matters, he says.

“He actually believes in things. He does not sheepishly, slavishly go along with the European project as he firmly believes in the concept of the nation state,” the Brexit Party MEP said in an interview with VáslaszOnline.

“He clearly is a strong defender of, as he sees, the Hungarian culture and he is not afraid to say and do these things despite huge criticism from the European Union.”

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz introduced a constitutional amendment Friday that would restrict senators to two six-year terms. It goes into effect after it’s passed, so Cruz would still be able to run for two additional Senate terms.

The amendment would also limit members of the House of Representatives to three two-year terms. It’s cosponsored by Republican Sens. Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, and David Purdue.

“The amendment, as drafted, would start the clock once it was ratified,” Cruz told the Houston Chronicle. “So term limits would begin at that moment.”

Cruz just began his second consecutive term in the US Senate, after winning reelection in November 2018 over Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke. He’s set to end his term in 2025.

Currently, terms in both houses of Congress are unlimited, although there are limits to the number of terms members of Congress may have on committees. Cruz has been a longtime critic of the Constitution not including term limits. He introduced a similar bill a year ago, according to ABC News.

Friday on MSNBC’s “All In,” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) called on Americans to protest across the country to send President Donald Trump a message that his declaration of a national emergency on the U.S.-Mexico border is “fake.”

Waters said, “I really expect we’re going to have a growing number of Republicans that are going to join with us in this disapproval. Yes, they’re concerned if a Democratic president gets elected then they can use emergency powers to do a lot of the things they don’t like. As you know, they don’t believe in climate change. They don’t want us to talk about Medicare for all or any of those subjects they think we’ll spend too much government money, even though they’ve created the largest debt we’ve seen in government for many many years.”

She continued, “I’ve been talking about impeachment for a long time. I’m absolutely stunned and amazed that the American people have taken so much off of this president. This president has lied, I think it’s been documented, 8,000 times in the last two years. This president has committed obstruction of justice right before our very eyes. And if we could ever get Manafort to tell the truth, then we will find they conspired to get Trump elected so sanctions could be lifted off of Russia. President Obama created sanctions, placed them on Russia, because of their invasion, basically in Crimea, and they can’t drill into the Arctic, do some of these things they want to do. They don’t have the equipment. Our allies are working with us to honor the sanctions, and that’s what this is all about. The Americans have taken too much off of this president. He is dishonorable. He does not deserve to be president of the United States. As a matter of fact, he loves Putin, dictators, loves Kim Jong-un, talking about they’re in love now.”

She added, “And so it’s time for everybody to stand up. All hands on deck to refuse this president these fake emergency powers that he would like the have. And so I’m urging everybody get together —rally in every community across this country all this weekend, send a message to Washington, D.C., ‘No, Mr. President, we’re not going allow you to do this.”

Richard: We will have to see how many of the Dem supporters are crazy enough to follow her orders, some will be and they are the ones that are crazy enough to turn to violency when they don’t get their way. Add in those who are supporting Rep. 17. US ‘Possibly’ Sabotaging Iran’s Satellite Launches Amid Failed 2nd Try – Zarif (sputniknews, Feb 16, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201902161072484483-us-sabotaging-iran-satellite-zarif/

“The comments arrived on the heels of Mike Pence’s outspoken remarks at a Middle East symposium in Poland, where he dwelled on Iran plotting “a new Holocaust”. Days earlier, a satellite image emerged sporting an empty launch pad and a burn mark on it at the Imam Khomeini Space Centre in Iran’s Semnan Province.

In an interview with NBC on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif pointed out that it was “quite possible” that the United States was sabotaging his country’s space programme thinking it contributes to the development of ballistic missiles on Iranian soil. He also confirmed that Tehran had gone ahead with a second satellite launch earlier this month despite Washington’s stance on it.

This confirmed assumptions made by Colorado-based company Digital Globe, which published images showing that rockets previously spotted at the Imam Khomeini Space Centre were gone, while the launch pad featured burn marks.

“We don’t know yet”, he said. “We need to look into it very carefully”, Zarif commented on the possible sabotage campaign, adding that Tehran is now “looking into the specifics” of it in the wake of a recent report in The New York Times. The outlet cited current and former US officials as saying that the Trump administration had stepped up a George W. bush-initiated programme to sabotage the Islamic Republic’s space and missile programme.

“I’m not saying President Trump’s administration, I’m saying people in President Trump’s administration are trying to create the same eventuality and I believe they will fail”, Zarif said. He expressed hope that “some sense will prevail”, adding that citizens will shortly learn that it’s “suicidal to engage in a war with Iran”.

In the interview Zarif also suggested the “same gang” that kick-started the 2003 Iraq War were “at it again” by calling for a military confrontation with Iran, thereby referring to a recent US-led conference on the Middle East hosted by Poland, where Mike Pence blasted Iran for plotting “a new Holocaust” by opposing Israel and its policies and pursuing its own regional interests in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen. Pence has demanded that the country’s NATO allies stick to their allegiance and drop the nuclear deal with Iran and join efforts with the US…”

  18. Daesh’s Downfall May Result in Al-Qaeda’s Resurgence, MI6 Chief Warns (sputniknews, Feb 16, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201902161072481862-daesh-downfall-al-qaeda-mi6/

“In light of Washington’s decision to withdraw all American troops from Syria due to the “victory” over Daesh, the UK Foreign Office said that despite the US-led international coalition’s successful efforts in fighting the terrorist group, it remains a threat and must be defeated.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Alex Younger, the chief of Britain’s foreign intelligence service MI6, said that Daesh’s* setbacks in Syria may contribute to the strengthening of Al-Qaeda.

“Al-Qaeda, which has always been in a rivalry, and almost zero sum relationship with Daesh, has, I think, undergone a certain resurgence as a result of the degradation of Daesh. It is definitely not down and out”, Reuters cited Younger as saying.

The MI6 head further elaborated that the UK has enhanced its security cooperation with its European allies to deal with such issues as militant fighters and jihadi brides flooding back to Europe after Daesh suffered territorial losses in Syria and Iraq.

“We are very concerned about this because all experience tells us that once someone has put themselves in that sort of position they are likely to have acquired the skills and connections that make them potentially very dangerous. The reality is that so far, it has been a completely manageable problem. I can’t predict accurately what will happen in future, but it’s a very complex environment”, he said.

Younger also pointed out that Daesh has morphed and is proving “adept at inspiring at attacks rather than directing them”….”

“JIHADI brides like Shamima Begum who ran away to join Islamic State in Syria are “potentially very dangerous” when they return to the UK, Britain’s spy chief warned yesterday.

Alex Younger, head of MI6, said British-born IS fighters pose an “extremely complex problem” for the authorities when they come home. Mr Younger spoke after Home Secretary Sajid Javid vowed to block Begum’s return to the UK. The heavily-pregnant 19-year-old, now in a refugee camp in northern Syria and who has already lost two children, says she wants to come home to have her baby – the child of a Dutch IS fighter…”

“HOME Secretary Sajid Javid has warned he “will not hesitate” to block the return of Britons who have travelled to join ISIS after runaway schoolgirl Shamima Begum demanded to return to the UK.

Mr Javid blasted those who left Britain for the terror group as “full of hate for our country”. The Home Secretary added that if they do return they could face prosecution. Mr Javid’s tough stance comes after Ms Begum – who was one of three Bethnal Green schoolgirls who notoriously fled to join ISIS in 2015 – begged to return to the UK…”

  21. Young Man in Serious Condition After Acid Attack on French Metro (breitbart, Feb 16, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/02/16/young-man-in-serious-condition-after-acid-attack-on-french-metro/

“A young homeless man was rushed to hospital after being sprayed in the face and hands with a corrosive substance on Paris’s subway on Friday.

The victim was attacked at the Bastille metro station on line 1 before 7 a.m. and had to be transported to hospital as a matter of “absolute emergency” according to authorities, Le Parisien reports.

“A rag soaked with a liquid that could be acid was found” at the scene, a police source said, and the substance has gone to a laboratory for analysis.

Local media reports the attack came during an altercation between the victim and another homeless person, who was described as having been covered in blood.

The suspect is on the run and authorities have opened a charge of attempted homicide, with the case entrusted to the Brigade of Parisian Networks (BRF).

The attack came after two other people were burnt by sulphuric acid on Wednesday night on line 11, where it is believed the substance was spread on a flip-down seat and on the floor in a train.

One victim was burnt on their thighs and another on the hands after they had touched the partially melted bottle which was on the floor.

Police have ruled out a link between the two incidents, and have not been able to determine if the acid in the earlier event was spread intentionally or by accident.

Compared to London, where acid attacks have been becoming a growing problem, vitriolage is relatively uncommon in Paris.

However, this is not the first attack of its kind to happen on France’s transit systems. In September 2017, a woman, reportedly mentally ill, attacked four American female tourists, spraying two in the face, while they were waiting for their train at Saint-Charles de Marseille station in southern France.

And on Halloween last year, a 13-year-old accomplice in the attempted robbery of grocery store in the regional Paris department of Essonne sprayed two officers with acid as he attempted to evade arrest.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/hezbollah-denies-us-charges-cells-venezuela-61120409

“The leader of Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group has denied U.S. assertions that it has cells in Venezuela saying the Latin American nation “does not need them.”

Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech Saturday that his Iran-backed group is in “solidarity with the political leadership and state of Venezuela against the American aggression.”

Nasrallah added that his group does not have influence in Venezuela nor does it have cells operating there.

Venezuela has plunged deeper into political chaos following by the U.S. demand that President Nicolas Maduro steps down a month into his second term, which the U.S. and allies consider illegitimate.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week that “Hezbollah has active cells” in Venezuela and “Iranians are impacting the people of Venezuela and throughout South America.””

“Extremists attacked an army checkpoint in the troubled northern Sinai peninsula on Saturday at dawn, causing 15 casualties among the armed forces including at least one officer shot dead, Egypt’s military spokesman said.

The army managed to kill seven of the extremists during the firefight, but did not give any further information on the army’s own casualties, according to a statement by Col. Tamer Rifai.

Two other officers in the area who gave a more detailed account said the officer and all the other 14 troops had been killed.

The attack involved some 200 fighters storming in from nearby olive groves, hitting the outpost with sustained heavy gunfire before entering the compound, which is near an airport, they said. The men seized weapons and then fled back through the groves, they added, speaking on condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to brief journalists…”

“French authorities have filed preliminary charges of complicity in crimes against humanity against a Syrian suspected of involvement in a bloody secret police crackdown on opposition activists.

A judicial official said Saturday the man is being held in custody pending further investigation, after being detained Tuesday near Paris as part of an international probe. The official was not authorized to be publicly named discussing an ongoing investigation.

Two other suspects were detained in Germany on Tuesday, also suspected of carrying out or aiding crimes against humanity.

Human rights groups hailed the arrests. They mark the first major breakthroughs of international investigators who are trying to track down individuals they think are responsible for atrocities committed on behalf of the Syrian government during the country’s eight-year civil war.”

  26. How long before big media companies become big sports-gambling companies?
Sooner than you think. But AT&T, which owns HBO, TNT, and CNN, says they won’t be taking your bets

Sports betting in the US used to be illegal, for the most part. Now it’s up to individual states to decide if they want it. Besides Nevada, which has always had legal sports betting, a handful of states have authorized it, with only New Jersey jumping in completely. But with estimates of US sports gambling hovering around $150 billion annually, it won’t be long before many states decide they want a piece of that action.

So here’s the question for media companies that are hoping to profit in some way from the billions of dollars gamblers are going to bet on sports: How do we get a slice?

I’ve been talking to people who make money in sports betting and media, and this looks like the way it’s going to play out:

  27. Germany: Blair calls Brexit ‘terrible historic mistake’ in Munich speech

Former British prime minister Tony Blair described Brexit as “terrible historic mistake” and vowed to do “everything” to stop it, in a speech from Munich on Friday.

Addressing a crowd of students at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Blair said he was still “uncertain” about whether the UK will leave the European Union (EU) on March 29.

“It changes almost day by day,” he told the crowd.

Blair, who led the country between 1997 and 2007, said the referendum result could threaten the viability of the Union, with Scotland voting heavily to remain in 2016.

“This is causing tension between Scotland and England. I think if we do a Brexit that is a ‘hard Brexit’, so we actually get out of the European trading systems, this is going to be a problem,” he said.

The ex-Labour leader also believes “the vote might be different today”, with the narrow advantage in favour of Brexit, which won by 51.9% to 48.1%, potentially cancelled out as younger remain-supporting voters replace older leave-supporting voters.

    • Germany: Blair calls Brexit ‘terrible historic mistake’ in Munich speech

I seem to recall another similarly contemptuous ‘leader’ making a “Munich speech” of his own.

  28. Venezuela’s Death Squad: Masked special police unit is accused of killing more than 200 as President Maduro desperately clings on to power

Armed and masked members of Venezuela’s ‘Death Squad’ have killed more than 200 people over the last year, according to the country’s leading rights’ group.

President Maduro established the Bolivarian National Police’s Special Action Forces (FAES) in 2017, ostensibly to tackle emergency situations such as terrorism and hostage-taking.

But rights groups say the uniformed squad, who possess elite military training and weapons, are responsible extra-judicial killings of hundreds of people in non-extraordinary situations.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6711945/Masked-police-unit-accused-killing-200-President-Maduro-desperately-clings-power.html

    • Start targeting the death squad. Like Solzhenitsyn said:

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.

Kill them now or kill them later (after countless more deaths).

  29. Chinese State Media Warns of Impending ‘High-Tech Cold War’ Fueled by A.I. Competition

U.S President Donald Trump’s executive order instructing the American government this week to prioritize the development of artificial intelligence (AI) could trigger a “new high-technology Cold War” between the United States and China, the Beijing-run Global Times cautioned on Tuesday.

Beijing’s warning comes on the same day that Adm. Philip Davidson, the top American top in the Indo-Pacific region, told lawmakers that China’s “massive effort to grow and modernize” its military, including endeavors to manufacture “artificial intelligence-equipped weapons,” is “eroding” America’s “relative competitive military advantage” in Asia.

    On Tuesday, Global Times reported:

    https://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2019/02/13/chinese-state-media-warns-impending-high-tech-cold-war-fueled-a-i-competition/

    • “Beijing’s warning” is nothing other than the usual not-so-idle threat of a schoolyard bully expressing dire concern during morning recess about you not being given that day’s lunch money.

For the technologically literate, it’s a dead cert that America is, and will continue, leading planet Earth in the development of AI. In this same vein, yet one more time will Communist China’s knock-off culture come back to bite them in the æss. This time, royally.

Try using a copycat mentality to duplicate consciousness. One may as well play the black pieces and mimic white’s chess moves. As in: You will trap your opponent’s king exactly one move after being checkmated. Tempo is everything.

More to the point, try imitating innovation. This is what the Chicoms have been doing for many, many years. All the while with cruelly predictable results. Some issues:

      • Aghast at the least notion of counter-revolution, Beijing has spent nearly seventy years behaviorally conditioning* near-limitless cadres of obedient, unquestioning, unrebellious, uncomplicated, and above all, unimaginative servo-robots.

      * Pavlov, does that name ring a bell?

      • Industrial-grade CCP brainwashing—using only the finest quality Soviet suds (Hat tip: Robert Welch)—has nigh well permanently de-coupled artistry and creativity from their modern “culture” (i.e., with Chinese characteristics). After all, aren’t creative thinkers—with their supremely annoying memes—among some of the most dangerous individuals to walk the face of this earth?

When it comes to congenitally brittle Big Government, only the immediate use of nuclear weapons is a bigger threat to such overweening Statism than are genuine visionaries.

      • With odds of perpetuating their family’s DNA equal to a mathematically imaginary number far less than the square root of negative zero, young PRC males are cripplingly demoralized before the devil can get his shoes on.

      • Having over-bred solidarity into their warriors—to the point of being intramurally noncompetitive—draconian government controls (e.g., the Great Firewall and Social Credit) inculcate a choking degree of risk-avoidance. This is not even a remotely functional way of building military unit cohesion.

      • The CCP’s same obsession with social cohesion has yielded a population that—as is so often the case with kleptocracies—unwillingly united in having everything to lose should things go all pear-shaped. Behind this paper mâché façade of “all for one and one for all” is a psychosocial Potemkin Village that masks deeply entrenched economic insecurity and the usual gray- or black-markets that thrive in such atmospheres of uncertainty.

      • The tarted up Expert Systems that Red China (and its MSM camp followers) tout as putative AI directly reflect the limited branching conditions, propagational delays, low fan-outs, and poor back-chaining that result from narrow-bandpass, heavily filtered, channeled

Again, true innovation cannot be copied or appropriated. It will take a very long time before the CCP’s collectivist automatons rise above their Communist cookie-cutter indoctrination. Originality will be the only way of obtaining whatever stupendous breakthroughs are required to attain genuine Artificial Intelligence.

Even America’s most grunt-level soldiers retain some sense of consideration for the morality of their orders. This basic level of discernment is specifically allowed to atrophy in PLA recruits and brass on a top-down basis.

Western scientists have been struggling with the grueling trial-and-error process of, first defining (an incomplete task, even today), then

This scientific ball brain buster continues to elude the finest minds in computational engineering. How do Chinese Communists delude themselves into believing that they’re somehow capable of leap-frogging the best efforts of free-thinking geniuses?

Backed by multimillion dollar black-budgets and the financial might of industrial tech engines, the West’s best and brightest are throwing the kitchen sink (gotta have a food reference in there somewhere) at this recalcitrant problem—with little to show for machine consciousness. See: UoT Austin’s late-1980s Botany Knowledge Base (BKB) project where almost 200,000 plant facts and 30,000 concepts were entered into an Expert System to test this multifunctional knowledge base for its ability to connect data and relationships into “intelligent observations”.

Hobbled and blinkered by mandatory attendance classes in political goodthink, what chances do Mainland AI investigators have when they’re hamstrung nine ways to Sunday before getting off of the starting blocks?

As noted elsewhere, Red China is about to find out that in this technological relay race to achieve functioning AI, the starter’s pistol doesn’t fire blanks.

Extreme neo-Nazi ‘death cults’ drawing in children as young as 13, report warns

Exclusive: Children as young as 13 being drawn into ideologies ‘harder, darker and more committed than ever before’

Neo-Nazis are getting younger and more violent in the UK as teenagers are drawn into “disturbing” movements, a report has warned.

Research by counterextremism group Hope Not Hate found that children as young as 13 were becoming involved in a new wave of organisations that are gathering support online.

“The trend towards younger, more violent Nazis is a real concern and needs to be monitored closely,” researchers said.

“The threat of far-right terrorism comes from both organised groups, like National Action, but increasingly from lone actors who get radicalised on the internet.”

Researcher Duncan Cahill said young teenagers were among those involved in emerging neo-Nazi networks, but have no clear aim.

    • Sure! But the west doesn’t have the 1300 years it will take to civilize the barbarians within the gates let alone those without. This is the myth of the moderate muslim who shelters, supports and sympathizes with the jihadists and one that is becoming rather common in many places: Robert Spencer, Gatestone etc. All of these bend over backwards to be fair and decent to a group who universally do not deserve it.

  33. Strange contradictions in recent messaging on Trump probes
    By J.E. Dyer February 16, 2019

This is odd enough to be worth comment. CNN reported on Friday that the Mueller special counsel team had filed a court document indicating they had evidence of Roger Stone communicating with WikiLeaks.

The CNN report implied that the information was new, or at least that Mueller’s prosecutors were stating “for the first time” that they had it.

    https://libertyunyielding.com/2019/02/16/strange-contradictions-in-recent-messaging-on-trump-probes/

Richard: The main thrust of the article is that it looks like the politically motivated attack on a duly elected President is starting to melt down or fall apart which ever you prefer. Things are starting to come out that show that the only reason that the FBI started any investigations is that they disagree with President Trumps politics. They seem to think of themselves as a Praetorian Guard that gets to choose the Presidents.

To call this attitude and the subsequent action 3rd world is a massive understatement. These actions are a sign that the Democrats and the bureaucrats in the Federal Government have decided that they have a God given right to rule and that the rest of us are to shut up and let our betters make all of our decisions. We are seeing more signs of this attitude in the Dems attempt to prevent the President from protecting our Southern Border, we are witnessing an attempt by the Dems to return to the days of FDR when we had a President for life. Only this time they don’t intend to let any Republican ever win another election.

  34. Ocasio-Cortez offers up a double dip of cluelessness on the Amazon botch
By Ben Bowles February 16, 2019

Torn between whether to order cookie dough or rocky road? No matter. Newly minted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez followed up yesterday’s laugh-a-minute disquisition on how New York City could spend the $3 billion it would somehow gain access to by not offering a tax break to Amazon with a scoop of example.

For those who missed it, AOC said of her “victory” over “corporate greed,” by helping to skunk the deal with Amazon:

A number of people, including MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, pointed out the glaring error in Ocasio-Cortez’s thinking. In a nutshell there is no $3 billion floating around in the ether that New York can now seize and spend on infrastructure or anything else. The $3 billion was simply an amount that Amazon would have saved in taxes as an incentive to go ahead with its plans to open a satellite headquarters in New York.

A few of AOC’s critics used sarcasm to highlight her tenuous grasp on the economic reality of the Amazon kerfuffle. One of these, a Twitter user who goes by the handle Boomieleaks, brought out Ocasio-Cortez’s priceless followup to her original comments:

Putin also provided Macron with information about militants attempting to carry out provocations with the use of chemical weapons in the Idlib de-escalation zone.

The reports about new false flag operations in Syria come after BBC producer Riam Dalati earlier this week said that footage of people being treated following an alleged chemical weapons attack in the Syrian city of Douma was staged.

Back in April, the footage was used as a pretext for missile strikes against the Syrian government, carried out by the US, Britain, and France, despite a lack of evidence.

Damascus has repeatedly denied the accusations, while Moscow has stated that claims about the alleged use of toxic chemicals were based on false reports.”
