Contributor’s Links post for January 6th, 2019

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

Just a light-hearted look at how the Daily Meddler skews its reporting.

If the perp were not from a Preferential Diversity+ group the headline would be vitreolic and not sympathetic. And of course, comments not censured.

“Yahya Egeh had intended to use the money – a gift from his mother – to buy a burger to celebrate his 20th birthday. Instead, he ended up in The Savoy in Central London, where he ran up a restaurant bill of £2,146.50, including the wine.”

This ‘not-minded’ defense of Socialists when caught with their hands roaming.

“Westminster magistrates heard last week that the architecture student from Willesden Green, North-West London, was persuaded to go to The Savoy after being telephoned by a friend, named only as Tallulah.”

Egeh ordered food and the bottle of wine while waiting for his friend. But his lawyer, Shaher Bukhari, said: ‘Tallulah never arrived and he started to panic.’”

The BS the lawyer presented with no imaginary friend turning up to defend him at court.

    Scum all round.

    • For the lawyer, (gone so far not tellling the truth, so why stop now):

    • Frankly, given the state of the government-media complex world wide, i suspect that the DM would not have been allowed to present the story they way they would have otherwise without serious consequences to them.

In fact I suspect the only reason they are so good on our issues relative to the BBC is that they also have a ton of Marxist PoMo friendly stuff none of us likely see, but if you click through to the front page and just look at the thing, you would never know deep within its covers they contain stories that counter the Narrative.

“Spain’s maritime rescue service says it saved 549 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

The service says its craft intercepted six small boats carrying a total of 350 migrants on Saturday in waters east of the Strait of Gibraltar.

On Sunday another 199 migrants were pulled from five different boats, including two tiny inflatable boats meant for small bodies of water or near the beach. One of those tiny recreational boats was carrying four children. The other was packed with 10 adults.

The United Nations refugee agency estimates that 2,262 migrants died while crossing the Mediterranean in 2018.

The European Union’s border agency says that 57,000 illegal immigrants reached Spain last year, double the figure for 2017. Overall, unauthorized border crossings into Europe hit a five-year low.”

  9. Germany: Refugee stabbed boy and seriously injured him+++
A 17-year-old boy was seriously injured in a dispute among young people in Beucha near Leipzig. As the public prosecutor’s office in Leipzig confirmed at the request of the radio station MDR SACHSEN, two young men had got into an argument at the station. A 16-year-old had stabbed his opponent. The background to the crime is still unclear and is currently under investigation. According to unconfirmed MDR information, a dispute over a young woman was the cause of the dispute. Police were able to arrest the suspect on the spot. According to the police, the suspect was an “unaccompanied minor refugee” who presumably came from Syria. The public prosecutor’s office has initiated proceedings against the accused for attempted manslaughter and is currently examining whether to apply for an arrest warrant. The local police did not want to comment on the incident with reference to the investigations and referred to the police headquarters in Leipzig. It is certain, however, that the stabbed victim was a German boy.

DUBAI (Reuters) – Iran and Russia are preparing to hold joint naval exercises in the Caspian Sea, including rescue and anti-piracy drills, the commander of the Iranian navy was quoted on Sunday as saying.

    https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideast-crisis-syria-rebels/turkish-backed-syrian-rebel-army-deploys-to-halt-jihadist-advances-idUKKCN1P00H1

“The main Turkish-backed rebel army has deployed along frontlines close to jihadists in northwest Syria to repel any new militant advance after an offensive that expanded their control over the country’s last rebel-held bastion, rebels and residents said.

Islamist Tahrir al Sham, formerly affiliated to al Qaeda, on Sunday entered the town of Atareb, days after capturing from their mainstream rivals the strategic town of Darat Izza, both in the western Aleppo countryside, in a military campaign that has since spread across Idlib and areas near the Turkish border.

A convoy of Tahrir al Sham fighters entered the densely populated town after forcing its leaders to hand over control by threatening to storm it if mainstream rebels opposed to their hardline Islamist ideology do not leave.

The offensive by Tahrir al Sham has alarmed the National Army, the main Turkish-backed rebel force aimed at unifying disparate factions in the northwest.

“We took a decision to repel the aggression by Tahrir al Sham on the Aleppo and Idlib countryside,” their spokesman Major Youssef Hamoud said. “We are reinforcing areas to prevent their expansion and control of more villages and towns.”

The National Army compromises about 35,000 fighters from some of the biggest factions in a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and forced 11 million people from their homes over the last seven years.

The jihadists have been the dominant force in rebel-held Idlib province and also have a civil administration that runs basic services in many towns including Idlib city, the provincial capital.

Ideological differences divide them from nationalist groups in the Free Syrian Army gathered under the banner of the National Army and the National Liberation Front (NLF), both backed by Turkey.

  13. France in Free Fall

    by Guy Millière
    January 6, 2019 at 6:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/13500/france-in-free-fall

Strasbourg, France. Christmas market. December 11th, 8pm. A man shouting, “Allahu Akbar” (“Allah is the greatest”) shoots at passersby, then wounds several with a knife. He murders three people on the spot and wounds a dozen others, some severely. Two will later die of their wounds. The murderer escapes. Two days later, the police shoot him dead.

He was known to the police. When members of the General Directorate of Internal Security and some gendarmes came to his home a few hours earlier, he had escaped. Although they knew he was an armed and dangerous Islamist ready to act, and that Christmas markets had been, and could be, likely targets, no surveillance was in place.

The murderer, Cherif Chekatt, should, in fact, have been kept off the streets. He was 29 years old, his name was on the list of people reported for terrorist radicalization (FSPRT), and he and had already been sentenced for crimes 27 times. He was nevertheless roaming around free, with no police oversight.

His case is similar to that of many jihadi terrorists in France in the last decade. Others include Mohamed Merah, who murdered Jewish children in Toulouse in 2012; Cherif and Said Kouachi, who murdered most of the staff at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015, and Amedy Coulibaly, who murdered people at a kosher supermarket few days later.

  14. Iran’s Schizophrenia Heats Up the Debate

    by Amir Taheri

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/13499/iran-schizophrenia

As the leadership in Tehran prepares to mark the 40th anniversary of the Khomeinist revolution, a growing number of Iranians are wondering whether the time has come for their country to close that chapter and resume its historic path as a nation-state.

The need for Iran to move beyond the Khomeinist revolution was the theme of a seminar last month at Westminster University in London where the return of Iran as a nation-state was highlighted as an urgent need for regional peace and stability.

The Khomeinist revolution in Iran has failed to “export” its model to a single country, while making Iran poorer and more vulnerable than it had been under the Shah.

The main reason for this is that the Khomeinist revolution failed to create a new state structure with credible and efficient institutions. Unable to destroy the Iranian state as it had developed over some five centuries, the new Khomeinist rulers tried to duplicate it by creating parallel organs for exercising power.

  15. Sweden Hands Out over 132,000 Residency Permits in 2018 (breitbart, Jan 6, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/06/sweden-hands-out-over-132000-residency-permits-in-2018/

“The Swedish migration board handed out 132,696 residency permits in 2018 which include tens of thousands of asylum seekers and their family members.

The largest number of residency permits were given for reasons of family connections which included 72 adoptions, 16,641 family reunifications for asylum seekers, 18,792 family reunifications labelled “other,” and 9,339 permits for children born to parents with citizenship outside the European Union, migration board report states.

The number of new asylum seekers has decreased since the height of the migrant crisis in 2015 with 2018 seeing 25,114 asylum applications in total and within that number were 4,908 asylum seekers taking advantage of the new “high school law” which was aimed at granting asylum to around 9,000 underage migrants, mostly coming from Afghanistan.

The law was controversial and went ahead despite revelations that around 78 per cent of the Afghan asylum seekers were actually adults according to a study by Swedish newspaper Expressen conducted last May. Additionally, according to the report, 99.4 per cent were also shown to be male.

Asylum seekers and family reunification residency permits made up the majority of the total residency permits for 2018, continuing a trend that Breitbart London reported on in September last year.

Broken down into countries of origin, the statistics show the largest groups were Afghans with 2,018 family reunifications; Syrians with 8,313 plus 2,702 children born to Syrian citizens; Eritreans had 3,075 with 1,491 children born in Sweden to Eritrean citizens; and Iraqis with 1,528 family reunifications.

The country where the most asylum seekers originated in 2018 was Afghanistan with 8,721 granted residency permits followed by Syria and Eritrea.

Sweden has seen unprecedented levels of mass migration over the last decade and following the height of the migrant crisis in 2015, the country has begun to feel the effects which have led to some to propose municipal tax increases as well as raising the retirement age to handle the costs associated with mass migration.

Adding to the problem has also been the unemployment rate of migrants, which is much higher than native Swedes with heavily migrant populated cities like Malmö having much higher unemployment rates compared to the Swedish average.”

  16. Pentagon: Taliban Distancing from Sunni Al-Qaeda While Getting Cozy with Iran (breitbart, Jan 6, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2019/01/04/pentagon-taliban-distancing-sunni-al-qaeda-getting-cozy-iran/

“The Taliban and al-Qaeda no longer maintain “strategic ties” in Afghanistan despite the ongoing “limited support” provided by Taliban leaders, the Pentagon argues in its most recent assessment of the war.

“Some lower- and mid-level Taliban leaders provide limited support to al-Qa’ida; however, there is no evidence of strategic ties between the two organizations, and the Taliban likely seeks to maintain distance from al-Qa’ida,” the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) reveals in its report released last month, which covers U.S. efforts to enhance security and stability in the nation from June 1 through November 30 of last year.

The Pentagon claims that the al-Qaeda threat against the United States stemming from Afghanistan “has decreased,” adding:

The few remaining al-Qa’ida core members are focused on their own survival. The remnants of the organization likely reside along the southeast Afghanistan border with Pakistan with a smaller element in isolated areas of northeast Afghanistan. … In addition, al-Qa’ida’s regional affiliate, AQIS [al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent], has a presence in south and southeast Afghanistan, and in Pakistan, and is composed primarily of militants from within the broader South Asia region.

The Pentagon’s assertions contradict an August 2018 report from the United Nations, which said that the relationship between al-Qaeda and the Taliban “remains firm” nearly 17 years after the United States declared war on the jihadi allies responsible for 9/11…”

“A court in Bangladesh has remanded seven men in custody, including a local leader of the governing Awami League party, over a suspected gang rape.

A mother of four alleges she was raped by a group of men because she voted for the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party in last week’s poll.

The election night attack has triggered protests and anger on social media.

The men have denied the accusations, and the Awami League leader has been expelled from the party.

The Awami League won a landslide victory in last Sunday’s election, which was marred by violence, intimidation and vote rigging claims. At least 17 people died in clashes between ruling party and opposition supporters…”

  18. Reality Check: Who rescues migrants in the Channel? (BBC, Jan 6, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-46758600

“The number of migrants crossing the English Channel by boat is small – it pales in comparison to those making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean – but there has been a small spike in crossings in recent months.

In 2018, the Home Office says 539 people attempted to travel to the UK on small boats. Of these, 434 (around 80%) made their attempts in the last three months of the year.

Of the 539, 227 (42%) were intercepted by the French before they made it to the UK.

Now, a Royal Navy patrol ship has been sent to deter them – but when people do cross, who is responsible for rescuing them?

A country’s territorial waters stretch for 12 miles off its coast. After that, you’re into international waters.

If a boat carrying people is found within national waters it’s fairly clear-cut – that country has a duty to rescue them to a place of safety.

In international waters, it’s slightly less clear and may vary on a case by case basis. But there is still a legal obligation to rescue those in distress and take them to a place of safety.

The stretch between Dover and Calais (the narrowest point) is entirely covered by territorial waters on either side but further down the Channel where it widens out, the waters outside of the two countries’ territories are divided up into French and English search-and-rescue zones.

These rescue zones – which roughly divide the area of the Channel in half between the two countries – are coordinated by operations centres in Dover in the UK and Gris Nez (near Calais) in northern France.

It’s the responsibility of the authorities there to ensure that anyone in distress in these zones receives assistance. In reality, if people are in danger, any boat nearby will have a duty to rescue them.

Those picked up in the UK zone will be taken to an English port and those in the French zone to a port in France.

The French authorities told the BBC that they had stepped up patrolling in their zone since migrant crossings began to increase in October last year.

The patrols consist of naval craft belonging to the French customs authorities, the Gendarmerie or the French navy.

“Before October, we had only one patrol a day,” says Ingrid Parrot, spokeswoman for the French maritime authorities in the Channel and the North Sea.

“Since the beginning of November, we decided to do night-time patrols with between two and four vessels, depending on the conditions at the time.”

The French authorities say they intercepted an attempt to steal a fishing boat recently in the port of Boulogne.

    Where can they seek asylum?
Under international law, people have the right to seek asylum in whichever country they arrive. There’s nothing to say you must seek asylum in the first safe country.

However, under EU law there is a provision to allow asylum applications to be transferred to another member state.

The Dublin Regulation states that a person’s asylum claim can be transferred to the first member state they entered.

In 2017 – the last year we have figures for – 461 people were transferred to the UK from another EU country under the Dublin rules, and 314 were transferred out of the UK.

The UK grants refugee status to those who are unable to live in their own country for fear of persecution because of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or other factors such as sexual orientation. A successful application usually allows someone leave to remain for five years with the opportunity after that to apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Entry into the original EU country must be proven – so if someone has travelled through mainland European without being fingerprinted and doesn’t appear in the shared European fingerprint database, then they cannot be sent back.

If someone already has an asylum claim underway in another country, there will be a dialogue between those two countries about who is responsible.

If an asylum claim in another EU country has already been unsuccessful, the claimant has to prove that this decision was made unfairly or that their circumstances had changed since the decision was made.

Migrants coming from Calais, for example, are likely to have already made an application there according to immigration lawyer, Marcia Longdon.

Children can also be transferred under Dublin Regulations to a member state if they have relatives living there who are capable of taking care of them.

If the UK leaves the EU with a deal, it will remain part of the regulations during the transition period. In the case of no-deal, it will stop being part of them on March 29.

In practice, a lot of border security co-operation between the UK and France is bilateral and governed by the “Le Touquet” border agreement, says Virginie Guiraudon, a migration specialist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).”France is still respecting this agreement, even though President Macron had threatened during the Brexit campaign that France would pull out if the UK left the EU,” she says.

The UK Border Force currently has five cutters and six coastal patrol vessels deployed – three in the Channel, two in the Mediterranean, one in Gibraltar and one remains in UK waters.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said: “My focus continues to be on protecting the UK border and preventing loss of life in the Channel.

“For these reasons, the government has decided to deploy a navy vessel, HMS Mersey, to support our existing efforts. This will be an interim measure while the two Border Force cutters I have redeployed from abroad make their way back to UK waters.”

A note on terminology: The BBC uses the term migrant to refer to all people on the move who have yet to complete the legal process of claiming asylum. This group includes people fleeing war-torn countries, who are likely to be granted refugee status, as well as people who are seeking jobs and better lives, who governments are likely to rule are economic migrants.”

  19. Mueller Attorneys Caught Withholding Information in Court – When Will the Judge Realize the Mueller Special Counsel is Criminal Gang?

The Mueller gang was caught withholding millions of pages of non-classified information in its case against a Russian firm. The corrupt Deep State operatives claimed its for national security purposes.
The Russian firm that challenged Mueller in court, Concord Management, is making a mockery of the Mueller gang and bringing this all to light!
When will US judges understand that the Mueller gang is corrupt and criminal outfit attempting a coup of the 2016 US election while covering up their own crimes?

As we’ve noted previously, in an effort to tie their corrupt investigation to Russia, the Mueller team indicted 13 Russians after presenting their cases to a grand jury in February of 2018. Immediately, these indictments were suspect as everyone on the corrupt Mueller team knew that these ‘Russians’ would never be brought to justice, even if they were real, because they would never come to the US to stand trial and risk being tossed in jail.

Unfortunately for Mueller however, this soon turned into a royal mess.

I was just reading Macron is giving police more powers to crush the movement.
IMO: Macron will become the most hatest individual in France and will have to resign.

        • I doubt he will resign, unless some of the bigwigs in his party force him out only a coup or violent revolution will remove him from office. The fact that he is turning the police loose to crush the movement says he is not going peacefully, he is digging in his heels and won’t move until forced to by a bayonet pushing him out.

You are expecting him and the other leftists to act like you would, they are far radical left and don’t care what the little people think as long as they have police or military that are willing to use violence to crush the people. 22. After caravan assaults against border patrol agents spike 300%
    KGTV January 6, 2019

[Ed. – Considering what they’re up against and what they do for the country, the penalty for assaulting them needs to be severe.]

The Border Patrol says it has experienced a major uptick in violence at the border since the arrival of the migrant caravan.

Assaults against agents are up 300 percent compared to this time last year, according to San Diego Border Sector Chief Rodney Scott.

An agent was struck in the face shield with a rock thrown at the border on New Year’s Eve and was not injured.

[Ed. – Describing what this guy (Reid Hoffman) funded is always an eye-watering word salad, and hard to follow. But the bottom line is that he tried to plant a false impression that Moore was being supported by Russian bots, in the manner we’re supposed to believe Trump was. Hoffman keeps turning up in theoretically legitimate and mainstream enterprises: first a report to the U.S. Senate on the influence of Russian bots in 2016 (er, gee whiz); now on the board of Microsoft.]

A prominent internet billionaire and Microsoft board member spent $100,000 funding a campaign to manipulate the 2017 Alabama Senate special election. That race pitted candidate Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones against one another. Moore eventually lost.

Microsoft board member Reid Hoffman apologized for his involvement in the disinformation campaign on Dec. 26. Microsoft has refused to respond to a request for comment and a spokesperson said merely the company has “nothing to share at this time.”

Brain scans offer fresh insight into what shapes jihadists as pioneering study reveals they express a greater willingness to fight and die if they are ‘socially excluded’.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6562007/Brain-scans-reveal-jihadis-willing-fight-die-feel-socially-excluded.htmlientists tested 38 Moroccan-Spanish men with extreme religious views.

They asked them questions before and after they were excluded from a ball game.
Their brains showed that after exclusion, issues they previously considered merely important took on the nature of something ‘sacred’ and worth dying for.

    By Joel Adams For Mailonline
    Published: 06:38 EST, 6 January 2019 | Updated: 09:30 EST, 6 January 2019

Scientists studying brain scans of Muslim extremists have concluded social exclusion is a major factor in young men deciding to become violent jihadis.

The research, by an international team including professors from University College London (UCL), may challenge prevailing beliefs that poverty, religious upbringing or mental illness are dominant causes of religiously-inspired violence.

The researchers used ethnographic surveys and psychological analysis to identify 535 young Muslim men in and around Barcelona – where ISIS-supporting jihadis killed 13 people and wounded 100 more in the city centre in August 2017.
Of those 535, 38 men, second-generation immigrants of Moroccan origin who had already ‘expressed a willingness to engage in or facilitate violence associated with jihadist causes’, agreed to have their brains scanned.

The study’s co-lead author, Nafees Hamid of UCL, pictured, said the men started treating important causes like ‘sacred’ ones after the exclusion exercise – meaning they were more willing to fight and die for smaller stakes
Scientists scanned the men’s brains while asking them questions about behaviour and policies they considered ‘inviolable’ – such as introducing Islamic teaching in schools, or the unrestricted construction of mosques.

Then the men played a ball-throwing game with fellow Spaniards, but were abruptly and deliberately excluded from being passed the ball.

Their brains were scanned again after the exclusion exercise, and researchers found that the neurological impact of being excluded meant that issues they had previously considered inviolable became far more important and were now deemed similar to ‘sacred’ and worth fighting and dying for.

The study’s co-lead author, Nafees Hamid of UCL, concluded: ‘The social exclusion manipulation specifically affected nonsacred values, increasing their similarities with sacred values in terms of heightened left inferior frontal activity and greater expressed willingness to fight and die’.

His team linked their findings to previous research by the team on Israel-Palestinian, India-Pakistan and Kurds-Isis conflicts, which found that when values deemed ‘sacred’ are violated, hostility becomes intractable.

He said the findings should affect national anti-extremism policies worldwide, adding: ‘In addition, social exclusion may be a relevant factor motivating violent extremism and consolidation of sacred values.

‘If so, counteracting social exclusion and sacralization of values should figure into policies to prevent radicalization.’

Mr Hamid told The Observer: ‘This latest research has shown how values start to become sacred, and indicates that social exclusion makes non-sacred values behave like sacred values, which in turn makes people recalcitrant and prone to violence.

He called for the study, a multi-university project involving scientific research organisation Artis International and partly funded by the US Department of Defence, to be used to help ensure social exclusion was factored into policies to prevent radicalization.

He added: ‘This finally dispels such wrongheaded ideas. The first ever neuroimaging study on a radicalised population shows extreme pro-group behaviour seems to intensify after social exclusion.’

  31. 35% of Women Arrested for Terrorism in Spain Are Moroccans (moroccoworldnews, Jan 6, 2019)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2019/01/262557/women-isis-terrorism-radicalization-spain-morocco/

“Two Spanish criminologists conducted a study on women involved in terror-related crimes in Spain.

The study, quoted by Ceutaldia, indicates that nearly 34.8 percent of women radicalized by terror organizations in Spain are Moroccans.

The study showed that the majority of the 21 women “investigated during the last decade for radicalization” were between 19 and 25 years old.

The criminologist, Ariadna Trespaderne and David Garriga, said in their study that 60.9 percent of these women are from Spain.

The study said that none of the women had a criminal record.

According to the study, terror organizations target young women of “fertile ages” to marry and settle with their families.

Since terrorist attacks in Casablanca, Morocco adopted an anti-radicalization policy to fight terror threat. Morocco’s security services have also emphasized the importance of cross-border cooperation to fight radicalization among Moroccan immigrants.

Moroccan anti-terror offices also mobilized against former Moroccan ISIS fighters, seeking to return to the homeland from conflict zones, such as Iraq and Syria.

Last month, head of Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) Abdelhak Khiame said that 1,666 Moroccans joined conflict zones. He said that about 929 of this number joined ISIS and about 225 others have a criminal record linked to terrorism.

Khiame said that 239 Moroccan fighters returned from conflict zones, while about 643 others were killed in conflict zones, including ISIS wives and children during suicide attacks.

Khiame emphasized that returnees are always a threat to countries that receive them.

“The Kingdom of Morocco knows that [returnees] will pose a threat to the security of citizens and its stability. That is why it put in place the counterterrorism strategy in 2015.”

Returnees usually receive sentences ranging from 10 to 15 years in prison.

ISIS Moroccan suspects are spread throughout the MENA region, but are mainly in Iraq, Syria, and Libya.”

  32. 595 martyred in 262 terrorist attacks in 2018 (tribune, Jan 6, 2019)
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/1882804/1-595-martyred-262-terrorist-attacks-2018/

“A total of 595 people, including security officials, were martyred and 1,030 others were injured in 262 terrorist attacks carried out by militant, insurgent and violent sectarian groups across the country during 2018, an Islamabad-based think tank report states.

“These attacks posted a 29 per cent decrease from the previous year,” according to the Pak Institute for Peace Studies’ (PIPS) Pakistan Security Report 2018.

“Of these attacks, as many as 171 attacks were perpetrated by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its splinter groups – Jamaatul Ahrar, Hizbul Ahrar and others, martyring 449 people.

“Meanwhile, nationalist insurgent groups, mostly in Balochistan and a few in Sindh, carried out 80 attacks, martyring 96 people. As many as 11 terrorist attacks were sectarian-related, martyring 50 people and injuring 45 others.”

The PIPS report states that significantly, more than half of these attacks, around 136, hit security and law enforcement agencies. Meanwhile, security forces and law enforcement agencies killed a total of 120 militants in 2018 – compared to 524 in 2017 – in 31 military/security operations as well as 22 armed clashes and encounters with the militants reported from across four provinces.

The most ominous attacks were on political leaders and workers; in 24 attacks on them, 218 people were martyred and 394 injured. The deadliest ones took place in the run-up to the July 25 general elections.

The report also noted a total of 131 cross-border attacks from Pakistan’s borders with Afghanistan, India and Iran, claiming 111 lives and injuring 290 others.

Balochistan remained the centre of attention with 354 people martyred in attacks while 59 per cent of the total toll in Pakistan took place in the province.

Pakistan’s border along Iran also saw some clashes, a few hinting at diplomatic blame game. Two attacks by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) stood out for their modus operandi as in both, the banned group tried to kill Chinese workers and diplomats.

Yet, the report warns, the violence from Islamist groups like TTP and ISIS should not be conflated with that of Baloch secessionists. While religiously-inspired groups carried less attacks in Balochistan, the death toll was far greater than the secessionists’. Even some of their suicide attacks, alarming indeed, got foiled in the initial stages. However, the National Action Plan’s point of reconciliation in Balochistan awaits implementation.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, including erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas agencies, faced the highest number of terrorist attacks compared to all other regions of Pakistan. A total of 125 reported attacks from the province claimed 196 lives and injured 376 people.

While NAP requires revision, the National Internal Security Policy 2018-2023 is much granular in assigning specific tasks to different government departments. It should be made part of public debate, states the report.

More importantly, in 2018, a consensus document which condemned violence in the name of religion was released. Paigham-i-Pakistan is a unanimous declaration-cum-religious decree signed by 1,800 religious scholars across the country, and backed by the state. It is to be seen how the clergy responds to it, but endorsements by members of the banned outfits raise question whether they are still embraced…”

    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/todays-headlines/turkish-army-neutralizes-7-terrorists-in-n-iraq/1357092

“Turkish jets “neutralized” seven terrorists as part of an anti-terror operation in northern Iraq, the military said Sunday.

In a Twitter post, the Turkish General Staff said the airstrikes carried out in Avasin-Basyan region on Saturday neutralized terrorists plotting attacks on Turkish bases.

Turkish authorities often use the word “neutralized” in their statements to imply that the terrorists in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.

Turkish jets also destroyed shelters and depots of the terrorists during the operation.

The airstrikes in this region generally target PKK terrorists.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU — has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women and children.”

  34. UNICEF: Young leave Bosnia due to loss of patience (aa, jan 6, 2019)
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/unicef-young-leave-bosnia-due-to-loss-of-patience/1357047

“The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative in Bosnia Herzegovina Geeta Narayan said that young people are leaving Bosnia because they lost patience.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency in an interview, Narayan said that youth of Bosnia has lost the patience due to lack of hearing and investment in them.

Explaining the activities of UNICEF in Bosnia, Narayan said that they are dealing with the children in the early years of their education as well as their social life and growth development.

“UNICEF is dealing with a wide range of issues concerning the rights of the child. We work in the fields of education, child care, social inclusion and health and early growth and development of children,” said Narayan.

    Obstacles to achieving full potential

According to her, in Bosnia, as in many other countries of the world, children with disabilities are excluded from education and have many obstacles in order to realize their full potential.

“We have done a lot of events, mini-campaigns and, among other things, we wanted to say that it is best for children with difficulty, as well as for children with disabilities, to be included in a joint educational program because they learn both. This helps all children learn diversity, respect, and mutual support. In September, for example, we organized an event where we recognized individuals who made a special contribution to promoting the social inclusion of children with disabilities,” said a UNICEF representative in BiH.

Narayan pointed out that this year is a particularly significant one for UNICEF in Bosnia and its partners were related to refugee and migrant children.

“With the increased number of migrants and refugees in the country, the number of children who found themselves in a particularly vulnerable situation has increased. What was our task, or to respond to our mission and existence, is to provide them with health care, immunization or psychosocial support. We do a lot on this and get involved in a regular school program, because it is the best way for children to return to normality, although they are in a situation that is not normal, but at least in some way they get a feel. Many of them were exposed to various threats, violence, and exploitation risks, so that everything that can be done for these children is indeed one of our important priorities,” said Narayan.

    Quick Answer Application

According to Narayan, UNICEF is not focused only on one area, but on several of them, with the aim of protecting the rights of children.

“There are many things, such as education, health care, social inclusion, but if we had to isolate one area, then it is a concern for adolescents, children aged ten to 18 years. We recently launched an initiative that we called the U-report. It is a new tool for communicating with young people, which allows them to ask questions only if they have a telephone, and we get an answer right away. In this way we get a direct answer from them about what they think about what is happening today. This way we can have instant answers and thus take into account what young people want to say. The application is completely free and confidential, so far we have about 400 registered users, and we hope in the future that we will have about ten thousand,” said Narayan.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was founded in 1946 with the aim of overcoming the obstacles that poverty, violence, illness and discrimination cause in the development of the child.”

“Firebrand Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s parliamentary bloc has reiterated rejection of the presence of U.S. troops in Iraqi capital Baghdad.

On Saturday, images of Brig. Gen. Austin Renforth, Director of Joint Operations-Iraq for the Combined Joint Task Force, while touring the culture-rich Mutanabi Street in central Baghdad have triggered uproar across the Arab country.

Renforth was pictured on the tour along with Baghdad’s commander of operations Jalil al-Rubaie on the anniversary of the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.

“This is a challenge to national will, a new violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and a bad behavior that reveals the ugly face of the American administration,” Hamdallah Rikabi, a spokesman for Sadr’s Sairoon bloc, said in a statement on Sunday.

“We announce our condemnation and rejection of these cowardly acts and warn these forces not to repeat such barbaric behavior,” he added.

The Iraqi lawmaker went on to urge the government to issue an official explanation to the Iraqi public about the incident.

“Our position remains the same in rejecting American policies that do not respect the sovereignty of nations, their territorial integrity and the dignity of their people,” Hamdallah said.

The Iraqi government has yet to comment on the incident.

U.S. troops ended their combat operations in Iraq in 2010, and focused their work there on training the Iraqi forces.
