Contributor’s Links post for January 4th, 2019

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

    • First Muslim Women Elected to Congress Took Oath of Office with Quran  (breitbart, Jan 4, 2019)
      https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/01/03/first-muslim-women-elected-to-congress-took-oath-of-office-with-quran/

“Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), the first two Muslim women elected to the House of Representatives, used Islam’s Quran to be sworn into office on Thursday.

Public Radio International (PRI) and other media outlets reported that Tlaib used that the 1734 English translation of the Quran that belonged to Thomas Jefferson and is part of his collection housed at the Library of Congress.

Omar, 37, will be using the Quran that once belonged to her late grandfather, who helped raise her.

“It’s important to me because a lot of Americans have this kind of feeling that Islam is somehow foreign to American history,” Tlaib, 42, said in an article in the Detroit Free Press. “Muslims were there at the beginning. … Some of our founding fathers knew more about Islam than some members of Congress now.”

Omar will be the first Muslim women to wear a headscarf in the House chamber, which until now was part of a ban on wearing any kind of hat or headpiece.

Her father Nur Mohamed wrote on his daughter’s Instagram account that her election to Congress comes 23 years after the family came to the United States from Somalia.

      PRI reported:

New members of Congress are not required to take their oaths on the Bible or any other religious text. In fact, they need not swear on anything at all.

Tlaib and Omar are to use the Qurans at individual, ceremonial swearings-ins that take place in the House Speaker’s office after the official, en masse swearing-in on the House floor.

The leftist, tax-payer funded PRI reported that the two women using the Quran is a rebuff to President Donald Trump’s “all-out war on the triple whammy of what Tlaib and Omar represent: immigrants, Muslims, and women.”

As Breitbart News reported, Tlaib also announced she would be wearing an outfit that reflects her Palestinian roots for her swearing-in ceremony.

The Quran has been used before during a swearing-in ceremony. Former Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) also deployed Jefferson’s Quran in 2007.

The two women will be joined in the House by another Muslim, Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN).

But, according to PRI, the women represent a different kind of Islam represented in the United States Congress.

The two women’s elections are notable for the diversity they bring to national-level representation of American Muslims, say faith and community leaders. Ellison and Carson, who are both black and grew up in the US, each converted to Islam as young adults. Omar and Tlaib grew up Muslim; Tlaib in an Arab community of Detroit, and Omar in a Kenyan camp for Somali refugees, then a Minneapolis neighborhood that is home to many Somali and East African immigrants.

According to the Congressional calendar, the newly-minted House will be in session on Thursday and Friday while the Senate will only be in session on Thursday. Then both chambers won’t return until January 8.”

      • Tlaib, 42, said in an article in the Detroit Free Press. “Muslims were there at the beginning. … Some of our founding fathers knew more about Islam than some members of Congress now.”

What unmitigated bull’s pizzle. The first Muslims in America probably were African slave traders that accidentally got mixed up with their cargo and, due to the language barrier, weren’t able to explain their way out of things.

As to how America’s, “founding fathers knew more about Islam than some members of Congress now” … Clearly, Tlaib does not understand that most ancient and basic of strategies, “know thine enemy“.

    • Rashida Tlaib’s First Day in Congress: ‘We’re Gonna Impeach the Motherf**ker.’ (breitbart, Jan 4, 2019)
      https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/01/03/rashida-tlaibs-first-day-in-congress-were-gonna-impeach-the-motherfker/

“On her first day as a new member of the United States House of Representatives, Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) called on her colleagues to begin taking steps towards impeaching President Trump.

Tlaib was fetted at a raucous reception later in the day by left wing advocacy group MoveOn.org. Her closing remarks there were, “We’re gonna impeach the motherfucker.”

In a brief written for her hometown newspaper that was published on Thursday, the same day America’s first Palestinian-American congresswoman will swear her oath to America using a 1734 English translation of the Quran that belonged to Thomas Jefferson, Tlaib says it is time to begin checking and balancing the president.

“We must rise to defend our Constitution, to defend our democracy, and to defend that bedrock principle that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States,” argued Tlaib. “Each passing day brings more pain for the people most directly hurt by this president, and these are days we simply cannot get back. The time for impeachment proceedings is now.”

John Bonifaz, the co-founder and president of the advocacy group Free Speech For People, joined Tlaib in composing the piece. Bonifaz is well-known for co-authoring The Constitution Demands It: The Case for the Impeachment of Donald Trump.

In the Detroit Free Press article, both Tlaib and Bonifaz argued that members of Congress “do not need to wait” until Mueller’s investigation is complete before attempting to impeach the president:

Whether the president was directly involved in a conspiracy with the Russian government to interfere with the 2016 election remains the subject of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. But we do not need to wait on the outcome of that criminal investigation before moving forward now with an inquiry in the U.S. House of Representatives on whether the president has committed impeachable “high crimes and misdemeanors” against the state: abuse of power and abuse of the public trust. Each passing day brings new damage to the countless people hurt by this lawless president’s actions. We cannot undo the trauma that he is causing to our people, and this nation. Those most vulnerable to his administration’s cruelty are counting on us to act—act to remove the president and put this country on a path to true justice.

Tlaib and Bonifaz concluded the op-ed by straying from the moderate Democrats’ argument that impeachment of the president is unwarranted and dangerous in current times.

“We are also now hearing the dangerous claim that initiating impeachment proceedings against this president is politically unwise and that, instead, the focus should now shift to holding the president accountable via the 2020 election. Such a claim places partisan gamesmanship over our country and our most vulnerable at this perilous moment in our nation’s history. Members of Congress have a sworn duty to preserve our Constitution. Leaving a lawless president in office for political points would be abandoning that duty,” Tlaib and Bonifaz argued. “This is not just about Donald Trump. This is about all of us. What should we be as a nation? Who should we be as a people? In the face of this constitutional crisis, we must rise.””

      • “Each passing day brings more pain for the people most directly hurt by this president, and these are days we simply cannot get back. The time for impeachment proceedings is now.”

Notice how it’s all about the hurt feelings and the pain? Where are the facts?!?

Facts, schmacts! What does truth have to do with quotidian reality when [screech] feelings are being hurt?

This treacherous anti-American Muslim infiltrator is doubly dangerous (if not more so) compared to your run-of-the-mill, standard issue, mass-assembled, boilerplate, anti-Western termite.

Weeping Islam’s crocodile tears, Tlaib swaddles herself in the comforting, fuzzy, Snuggie™ of PoMo’s feel-good-flag—even as she plots to fling aside all such absurd touchy-feely notions the moment America’s judiciary can be tipped into sharia law.

That Islam jams down its terrorist thumb of violent coercion on those scales of justice is not something that’s meant for popular consumption. Just as how Tlaib’s real reason for being sworn in on the Koran will remain hidden far, far away from any disinfecting sunlight.

Ergo, Tlaib’s appeal to emotion about a, “bedrock principle that no one is above the law”, remains just that, an appeal to emotionally-charged PoMos who are more concerned about committing suicide by willkommenskultur than respecting Constitutional law.

Tlaib’s protestations—even as she parrots Islam’s howlings about the Trumpian wolf—are utterly meaningless when held up against her vision of a reality ruled by sharia law. America’s representative government has less place this duplicitous Islamic sow than grand cathedrals do for two-bit whores.

  2. To NR’s article: why does the Dystopia spokesman throw in at the end that 900 people are detained in the U.S. compared to the 200 in China?

Are the 900 ALL political prisoners? Because given the current animus between China and Dystopia it’s a fair guess that many of the 200 are political “appointees” to incarceration. This will not be the case in the U.S..

How dare the government of Dystopia try to equivocate the parity of America with this brutal, tyrannical, murderous, enslaving, thieving communist mafia enterprise.

    • Note to Johnnyu:

Pal, time and circumstances left me unable to respond appropriately regarding your absorbing diatribe about Driverless Cars. For the sake of expedience, let’s entangle Driverless Cars with Autonomous Vehicles (which otherwise are quite different).

However obscurely dovetailed, the age of atomic energy helped midwife today’s digital era. Torrid benisons and all, even humanity’s risky domestication of fire—Sodom, Rome, London, and Chicago notwithstanding—is dwarfed by mankind’s (however tenuous) harnessing of nuclear power.

Atomic weapons represent the 20th century’s ultimate double-edged sword. Not even that era’s advent of lasers or UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) has been so awe-inspiringly dreadful.

Out of convenience, let’s similarly, conflate AVs (Autonomous Vehicles) with the AI (Artificial Intelligence) required to navigate them. Driverless cars are but one of many serrations on a digital blade that puts nearly every previous sword to shame.

The Damoclean peril posed by this electronic power-tool defies adequate quantification. That said, driverless transportation can take us to a place of clarity about good and bad in what is a, way-too-often, murky cyberscape.

      Some positives regarding AVs:

      • Large-scale reduction of multiple transportation-related footprints
After dropping someone off at work, a person’s private AV could run time-consuming errands like picking up dry cleaning, exchanging library books, taking children to school or game practice.

Increased human quality of life with parallel maximization of productivity—not including shorter roadway commute times, dependable workplace attendance, and reductions in psychological stress—all vitalize this enabling technology.

NOTE: To save time, I will forgo further annotations like the previous

      • Massive empowerment of elderly non-drivers

      • Huge appeal to less car-dependent Millennials

Doffing any roseate lenses, the cybersphere’s once-compelling attractions are daily, less able to mask it’s growingly ominous implications.

      Some negatives regarding AVs:

      • Intrusiveness nears an IoT (Internet of Things) monitoring level
The AV’s enablement of trans-Orwellian surveillance cannot be overstated. Neither can it’s appeal to Nanny State aficionados.

      • Potential for disinclusion from access to mobility

      • Integration of AV utilization with Social Credit systems

Here (along with the foregoing) are some of my rough draft essay notes on this topic:

Are Autonomous Vehicles and Driverless Cars Merely Hoverbikes of the Future?

A firm “no” is in order.

Only the IoT (Internet of Things) will provide more opportunities for intrusive supervision. AVs and DCs will create unheralded ways of restricting individual mobility…

… Much as Communist China is doing with its hideous Social Credit system

Rapidly evolving AI-driven facial and voice recognition apps will accessorize fine-grained, full-suite monitoring right down to the movements of individual people .
      ——————–

To learn a lot more about this topic, please consider visiting the website of AV expert, Dr. Alain Kornhauser, professor of operations research and financial engineering at Princeton University. Even if it’s only to “know thy enemy”, you’d be well advised to do so.

His expertise in aeronautical engineering, plus automotive systems engineering and automotive engineering make him a credible, (not necessarily PoMo) advocate for AV technology.

I’ve attended a lecture by Kornhauser and personally talked with him about this technological enfant terrible. Like it or not, there are just too many scales-of-economy being met by this solution for it not to go forward.

As for myself, give me a vintage mid-century, distributor ignition, American-made car with my eleven drawer Kennedy toolbox* stacked on its five compartment roll around to wrench on it.

      * Plus a vintage edition “Machinist’s Handbook” which fits in the weird top-center oblong drawer with that strange opening on its underside (used to extract the handbook).

So, it looks doubtful that autonomous vehicles are just hoverbikes of the future.

  3. Germany: Gang rape of an 18-year-old girl in Essen Disco by three Syrians+++
In the popular and mostly crowded discotheque Delta Musik Park on Frohnhauser Street in Essen, three young men are said to have forced an 18-year-old girl to have sex. Since Thursday they have had to answer to the XXIV Essen Criminal Court for rape, coercion and threats. They deny any guilt and speak of consensual sex in the men’s toilet. The defendants, two of whom are in custody, all have a Syrian background, but speak German well, they do not have an interpreter. They are 21 to 23 years old and have not yet made an appearance under criminal law.On the night of July 7, the accused allegedly went to a discotheque to separate a young female victim from her companion and force her to engage in sexual activities. This was her plan, says prosecutor Laura Riebau. The 18-year-old is said to have appeared to the accused “suitable because of the shy appearance”. Two had pushed the woman’s good friend into a corner and threatened to “stab him”. He had believed that, even if he had not seen a knife. The third had pulled the woman by the hand to the toilet. For fear and because she had seen her threatened friend, she went with him.On the men’s toilet she had to satisfy the 22-year-old Ajdel H. first, then also the 22-year-old Abdulkader A., who is said to have previously detained her boyfriend. Only then did security staff of the discotheque intervene.

  5. Sensitive Personal Data of 100 German Politicians Hacked & Leaked Online (sputniknews, Jan 4, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201901041071214334-germany-politicians-hackers-merkel/

“Details obtained and leaked in the hack include home addresses, mobile phone numbers, credit card info, as well as ID cards and private chats between family members.

Hackers have exposed personal data of more than 100 German politicians from all parties in the country’s parliament except the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), according to the ARD national public broadcaster. The identity of the hackers remains unknown, as does their motive.

Germany’s Bild newspaper, in turn, cited sources in the BSI, the country’s state security agency, as saying that the German government’s secure internal network was not compromised in the hacking incident.

Bild also reported that Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier could have been affected by the hacking attack.

The leak targeted cross-party politicians, including those from the CDU, CSU, SPD, Green, FDP and Linke parties, as well as celebrities, such as rapper Sido and actor Til Schweiger. Some German YouTube bloggers and journalists were also affected.

Home addresses, cell phone numbers, credit and ID cards, private chats between family members, job applications, party memos and lists of party members were leaked; some of the documents are over a year old.

Earlier, a spokesperson for the left-wing Left (Linke) Party’s parliamentary group confirmed that the organisation had been affected by the leak.

“I can confirm that there has been an incident,” the spokesperson said, adding that Dietmar Bartsch, leader of the Linke group in the German parliament’s lower house, was personally targeted.”

  6. Explosion Outside AfD Office in Germany Damages Three Buildings (sputniknews, Jan 4, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201901041071209319-afd-germany-explosion/

“An explosion occurred in front of Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) office in Dobeln, Saxony on Thursday evening, according to Frankfurter Allgemeine.

The AfD office building as well as two neighbouring buildings and two parked cars were damaged; fortunately, nobody was hurt.

According to a report published on the site saechsische.de, at the time of the explosion “a few flashes of light like the fireworks” were seen. Eyewitnesses also observed a man placing something in a trash can on the roadside just before the explosion. Furthermore, suspects were observed hurrying to a car and driving off.

Saxony’s State Office of Criminal Investigation has started looking in to the crime, and is considering the possibility that the incident could have been politically motivated.”

  7. Dutch REFUSE to take migrants, laying bare UTTER CHAOS at heart of EU refugee plan (express, Jan 4, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1067112/EU-news-migrants-the-Netherlands-Italy-Malta-Spain-rescue-migrant-Mediterranean-Sea-latest

“THE Netherlands have exposed a growing division in the European Union after refusing to take in migrants who were rescued in the Mediterranean unless other member states are willing to do the same.

Around 32 migrants are currently on Dutch-flagged NGO rescue boat Sea-Watch 3, which is currently moored off the coast of Malta after being rescued in late December near the Libyan coast. The Dutch offer has has once again fuelled the fire of bitter argument amongst EU countries about the shared burden of rehousing rescued migrants. Lennart Wegewijs, a spokesman for the Dutch security and justice ministry, insists the country are ready to “possibly take in a proportional number of migrants on board Sea-Watch 3, on condition that other European countries do the same”.

The Netherlands became embroiled in a stand-off over the onboard conditions after initially refusing to accept the rescued migrants, which includes four women and seven children, four of whom are unaccompanied.

Italy, Malta and Spain were also involved in the row after refusing to take in a number of those on board Sea-Watch 3.

The European Commission, Brussels’ powerful executive, are working with EU countries in order to end the deadlock.

Dimitris Avramopoulos, the EU commissioner responsible for migration, has been in direct contact with member states in an attempt to get the rescued migrants off of the boat.

A Commission spokeswoman said: “More solidarity of all member states is needed and the situation shows once again, as we have said many times, that predictable and sustainable solutions for disembarkation and allocation is urgently needed in the Mediterranean.”

German-registered rescue boat Sea Eye is also unable to dock in Europe after picking up 17 people, who have been aboard the vessel since December 29.

UNHCR, the United Nation’s refugee agency, says more than 2,240 people have died attempting to make the dangerous sea crossing last year.

The agency warned “time is increasingly of the essence” as sea conditions in the area continued to worsen.

Vincent Cochetel, the UNHCR’s special envoy for the central Mediterranean, said: “Decisive leadership is required, in line with fundamental values of humanity and compassion, to offer safe disembarkation and bring the 49 safely to land.

“Negotiations on which states will subsequently receive them must come only after they are safely ashore.”

One-in-18 people died making the crossing to Europe between January and July, showing an increase in fatalities since 2017, according to the agency.

Despite the spike in deaths, EU governments have continued to make it difficult for NGO rescue boats to operate in the region.

Matteo Salvini, Italy fire-brand interior minister and coalition leader, has closed all of his country’s ports to boats since a row last summer.

Mr Salvini argues that Italy is not offered sufficient help by EU member states who are not exposed to the growing number of migrants making the dangerous crossing.

Because of Italy’s position in the Mediterranean, the country is one of the most convenient destinations to land rescued migrants.

So far Brussels has failed to develop a group-wide policy that enables the fair distribution of migrants across the bloc with EU countries relieving the burden on southern states.

Spain is fast becoming the most popular destination for migrants attempting to make the dangerous crossing to Europe.

The Spanish coastguard says it has rescued more than 400 migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea within the first few days of 2019.

Authorities picked up some 290 people from five boats attempting to cross into Europe in the Alboran Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar on Wednesday.

On New Year’s Day, 111 people were also rescued from three boats within the space of nine hours, according to state broadcaster RTVE.”

    • THE Netherlands have exposed a growing division in the European Union after refusing to take in migrants who were rescued in the Mediterranean unless other member states are willing to do the same.

Evidently, someone in the lowlands has finally twigged to the EU’s diktat of “mandated unilateral suicide for thee but not for elite farting-through-silk me”.

  8. Britain’s Post-Brexit Immigration System ‘Worse Than Useless’, No Measures to Reduce Arrivals (breitbart, Jan 4, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/04/britains-post-brexit-immigration-system-worse-than-useless-no-measures-to-reduce-arrivals/

“An expert think tank has accused the government of pandering to big business rather than heeding the desires of voters in its post-Brexit immigration system, which it says has the effect of opening Britain’s borders even wider.

Responding to the immigration white paper published at Christmas, a report by the Migration Watch UK pressure group notes the new government plan has “no significant proposals for reducing immigration”, despite the Conservative Party having fought, and won, the past three general elections on manifesto promises to cut immigration significantly.

“There are, literally, no measures to reduce net migration, now running at 270,000 a year” in the white paper, Migration Watch notes, claiming the white paper allows almost all EU citizens who are free to enter the United Kingdom at present will continue to be so in the future — and, on top of that, several new migration routes from the rest of the world will be introduced.

Among the changes in Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s white paper is the removal of caps on so-called skilled migration from the rest of the world, with no requirement for jobs to be advertised in the United Kingdom before they can be advertised abroad.

Given those changes, Migration Watch said, it “seems certain that these proposals would allow a massive increase in the number of people entering the UK for work, and [it is] inevitable that many of these would find ways to stay long-term. This is not control. It is an illusion of control.”

Meanwhile, three-quarters of British voters want to see the government crack down on immigration.

Migration Watch UK chairman Lord Green described the new immigration measures as “worse than useless. They are so extensive as to be unenforceable by a Home Office that cannot even enforce the present system and is evading its responsibility to fulfil manifesto promises.

“The government have simply caved in to the employers’ lobby. This White Paper is a betrayal of all those who voted for Brexit in the expectation that immigration would be reduced and of the millions of others who consistently report that they wish to see less immigration.

“At 160 pages this must be, for the Conservatives, the longest suicide note in their history.”

The think tank’s report added: “these proposals are simply encouragement for increased immigration at the behest of some businesses. There is consequently a very strong likelihood of numbers spinning even further out of control.”

The revelations are a far cry from the immigration promises made by Prime Minister Theresa May in 2016: “[Voters] wanted to see an ability to be able to control the movement of people from the European Union. And obviously that’s what I say, not free movement as it has been in the past.

“…what I’m saying is, the British people… didn’t want the free movement to continue as it has in the past. We will be going out there to deliver on that.”

Immigration to the United Kingdom remains a key driver of population growth, placing extra demand on public services and exacerbating the nation’s housing shortage. Breitbart London reported in November that according to government figures for 2017-18, an estimated 273,000 more people moved to the United Kingdom as long-term migrants than moved away.

An estimated 9.4 million, or one in seven, people in the United Kingdom are born abroad, according to the government.

A 2018 study claimed immigration had driven 82 per cent of all population growth in the United Kingdom this century so far, with high immigration and higher-than-average birthrates attributed to migrant parents.

In 2017, one-third of all babies born in Britain had one or two foreign-born parents.”

“A study of geopolitical prowess by the neocon think-tank, the Henry Jackson Society (HJS), has suggested that Britain still tops the list – right after the US – of the most powerful nations in the world. This however may change as China comes on the heels of London, according to the report.

Titled ‘Audit of Geopolitical Capability,’ the HJS’s study suggested that Britain has retained its unique capacity to “project and extend itself… around the world”.

In fact, the report said that London remained largely unaffected by Brexit, despite the pound sterling having faced one of its most unstable years in 2018 and the comments by UK defence minister Tobias Ellwood that Britain’s soft power would be damaged by a no-deal Brexit.

China closely follows Britain in the list published by the HJS and represents a serious threat to UK’s status of a global force.

The study’s Chief Analyst, James Rogers, warned that as soon as 2020, China’ economic growth and naval investment could push Britain down the list.

“Just 0.4% separates the two nations after China added approximately 65,000 tonnes of large new warships to its fleet since 2016, comparable to around one fifth of the mass of the Royal Navy combat fleet,” the HJS said.

China is better than Britain in ‘technological prowess,’ the report said, and if the UK doesn’t boost its Research and Development spending, it risks “falling dangerously behind.”

“China’s rapidly expanding geopolitical capacity poses a serious challenge to the West. Over the past year, China has added tens of thousands of tonnes to its Navy and if current trends continue — it will overtake Britain as a global power by as soon as next year. If the rules-based order is breaking down, the UK should urgently invest in its armed forces’ projection capacities forward basing — not least in the Indo-Pacific region — if it seeks to halt this shift,” according to HJS.

HJS’s reputation and its raking of countries were questioned online, as the news of the study appeared on social media.

France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia, India and Russia complete the top ten of the most powerful countries in the world, according to the HJS report.”

  12. ‘Mysterious’ smell gets up Tehran noses (bbc, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-46745702

“A “mysterious” smell in Tehran is “not a cause for concern”, according to Iranian officials.

City officials held emergency meetings on Wednesday as thousands took to social media to complain about the “smelly,” “sulphur-like” and “fishy” odour.

The source of the smell, which made front page headlines in Iran, has not yet been identified.

Some reports suggested a burst sewage pipe in Enghelab (Revolution) Square might be the source of the odour. But according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency this was denied by Samim Rouzbahani, spokesperson for the Crisis Management Department of Tehran Municipality.

Hashtags translating as “smell”, “mysterious smell” and “unpleasant smell” trended on Twitter in Persian. Many were angered by a deputy governor’s claim that there was “nothing special” about the smell.

“While thousands of people have confirmed this bad smell, they [officials] show up and say it was nothing! This is how we know that whatever they deny is, in fact, true,” one social media user tweeted.

Mira Qorbanifar, a journalist with moderate newspaper Qanun, criticised the authorities for issuing contradictory statements and warned the issue should be taken seriously…”

  13. Iran to send warships to the Atlantic, closer to U.S. waters

LONDON (Reuters) – The Iranian navy will send warships to deploy in the Atlantic from March, a top commander said on Friday, as the Islamic Republic seeks to increase the operating range of its naval forces to the backyard of the United States, its arch foe.

Iran sees the presence of U.S. aircraft carriers in the Gulf as a security concern and its navy has sought to counter that by showing the flag near American waters.

A flotilla will leave for the Atlantic early in the Iranian new year, starting from March, Iran’s naval deputy commander said.

“The Atlantic Ocean is far and the operation of the Iranian naval flotilla might take five months,” Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA.

    • The Atlantic Ocean is far and the operation of the Iranian naval flotilla might take five months,” Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA.

Am I the only one giggling at the prospect of Iran’s navy getting its first, real shakedown cruise? I almost (but don’t really) pity the poor commander that got roped into answering for this floating three ring circus. They’d better have a well stocked sag-wagon of spares, not to mention prearranged contracts (with harbors en route for various refueling and maintenance operations) all tied up with a bow before leaving home port.

Why do I get the feeling that this sort of advance planning might not be a top priority for the mullahs? Am I alone in thinking that typically slipshod Muslim planning may cause some sort of blue-water operational meltdown?

Or is it because Trump could sabotage Tehran’s projection of Political Islam nine ways to Sunday before the devil even got his shoes on? Let’s have “no more mister guy” from the Pentagon and see it play a little knuckleball while Iran’s credibility, image, and reputation are on the line.

      • My first thought was to wonder how many would sink before they got near the US? No I am not thinking of turning our Subs loose, although that does have a lot of appeal.

      • Their missile technology is – hate to say it – world-class. Can they shoot off missiles from these floating coffins?

Communities established in Latin America are already 4 decades old. When the mullahs and the IRGC have to scram Iran, they can slide right into our hemisphere. Maybe we’ll have a base in Brazil by then.

  14. DEUTSCHE WELLE – Brazil’s Bolsonaro begins firing ‘left-wing’ public servants

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration on Thursday launched a purge of government officials who don’t share its far-right ideology.

Bolsonaro authorized the dismissal of some 300 officials on temporary contracts.

The government “will clean the house,” Chief of Staff Onyx Lorenzoni told a news conference after a Cabinet meeting headed by Bolsonaro, who took office this week.

“It’s the only way to govern with our ideas, our concepts and to carry out what Brazil’s society decided in its majority,” said Lorenzoni, who is seen as the second most powerful member of the executive after Bolsonaro.

The sweep will target officials who are seen as sympathetic to the centrist and left-wing parties that have ruled Brazil since 1985, when the country got rid of military dictatorship.[…]

    Ideological purge

Lorenzoni said the ideological purge of contractors aimed “to do away with the Socialist and Communist ideas that during 30 years have led us to the chaos in which we live.”

Bolsonaro and his team have often described their rival parties, in particular the left-wing Workers Party that governed between 2003 and 2016, as “socialists” or “communists.”

“It doesn’t make sense to have a government with a profile like ours to keep on people who support another way of thinking, another political system,” Lorenzoni said, adding that some of those dismissed might be rehired if they passed an “evaluation” of their ideological leanings.

The purge will not affect those civil servants who enter the services through a competitive exam and are protected from partisan politics by the constitution.

FRANCE 24 – Bolsonaro government launches purge of Brazil public service

The administration of Brazil’s new President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday it is starting a purge of government contractors to get rid of those who don’t share its far-right ideology.

The government “will clean the house,” chief of staff Onyx Lorenzoni told a news conference after the first cabinet meeting with Bolsonaro, who took office this week.

“It’s the only way to govern with our ideas, our concepts and to carry out what Brazil’s society decided in its majority,” he said.

The sweep will target contractors deemed sympathetic to the centrist and left-wing parties that have ruled Brazil for most of the period since the country shucked off military dictatorship in 1985.

Bolsonaro and his team routinely identify those parties — particularly the Workers Party that governed between 2003 and 2016 — derogatively as “Socialists” or “Communists.”

Bolsonaro in October decisively beat the Workers Party candidate in elections for the presidency.

The 63-year-old former paratrooper and veteran lawmaker won by promising to combat crime, corruption — and leftwing ideology that he blamed for Brazil’s recent record-busting recession and barriers to business.

He has pledged to roll back protections for the environment and minorities, boost investment, and ease gun laws.

Lorenzoni said the ideological purge of contractors aimed “to do away with the Socialist and Communist ideas that during 30 years have led us to the chaos in which we live.”

The measure does not affect government employees, who enter Brazil’s public service through a competitive exam and are protected from partisan politics by the constitution.

    – Targeting ‘red’ opponents –

As chief of staff, Lorenzoni holds ministerial rank and is seen as the second most powerful member of the executive after Bolsonaro.

He said that 300 contractors in his ministry had been dismissed under the purge, but added some might be rehired if they passed an “evaluation” of their ideological leanings.

The same shake-up could be extended to other ministries, he said.

“It doesn’t make sense to have a government with a profile like ours to keep on people who support another way of thinking, another political system,” he said.

“We are having the courage to do what maybe the previous government failed to do: clean the house right at the beginning.”

He was referring to the previous administration of president Michel Temer, a center-right politician who took over as a caretaker figure after the last Workers Party president, Dilma Rousseff, was impeached and removed from office in 2016.

Bolsonaro has repeatedly railed against the Workers Party and its supporters. During his campaign, he said his “red” opponents — the color of the Workers Party flag — would have to “either go overseas or go to jail” if he won.

On Tuesday, in his first public speech as president, he vowed Brazil’s green-and-yellow flag “will never be red.”

  16. I-Team: As ‘Microdosing’ Explodes in Popularity, New Look at Benefits, Side Effects of Daily Psychedelics Use

In the past three years, Google searches for the term “microdosing” have tripled, and books and articles on the subject are exploding.

Microdosing is described as taking an imperceptible dose of an illegal psychedelic drug, typically LSD, MDMA or Psilocybin, more commonly known as magic mushrooms. It’s a fraction – roughly a tenth — of a full hallucinogenic dose that would cause a high.

“It’s just been a constant upward trend, constantly on the rise,” said a drug dealer who spoke with News 4 New York’s I-Team on the condition of anonymity.

The dealer creates “microdoses” by taking psilocybin or “magic” mushrooms, grinding them to a powder and pressing them into pills that are a fraction of a full hallucinogenic dose. He said that it’s a growing group of people turning to street drugs and that they are looking for anything but a high.

  17. Hackers Dump Data on Merkel, Politicians in Giant German Leak

(Bloomberg) — Hackers have released private data linked to Chancellor Angela Merkel and hundreds of other German politicians in the biggest data dump of its kind in the country.

The information includes email addresses, mobile phone numbers and personal chat transcripts, according to a review by Bloomberg News on Friday. The data were leaked over the past weeks via a Twitter account called “G0d” that identifies itself as based in Hamburg and describes itself using the words “security researching,” “artist” and “satire & irony.”

It looks like the hackers got the passwords to Facebook accounts and Twitter profiles and worked their way up from there, said Simon Hegelich, a political scientist at Munich’s Technical University who has studied the manipulation of social networks.

“It’s a very elaborately done social engineering attack,” he said Friday by phone. “It’s a lot of data that’s been dumped.”

The German government is taking the attack “very seriously,” spokeswoman Martina Fietz said at a briefing with reporters on Friday.

  18. Turkey investigates HSBC director general for insulting Erdogan

A Turkish prosecutor started an investigation against HSBC bank director general over the charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, secular newspaper Cumhuriyet reported on Monday.

Ahvalnews said the probe against Suleyman Selim Kervanci, the director general of HSBC, focuses on a tweet that he posted five years ago when Erdogan was the prime minister of the country.

It added that Kervanci posted video footage from the movie “Downfall” which tells of the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s final days. In the footage, titled “Farewell kiss of Hitler: He complains of spreading the Gezi Park protests”, the subtitles were changed as the dictator angers about the police could not manage to suppress the widespread Gezi Park protests in 2013.

The attorney general of Istanbul has been conducting the investigation against Kervanci. The director general of HSBC on Sep.13 was summoned to the police headquarters in Istanbul and testified on the probe.

Kervanci said the video was first posted by journalist Ayse Arman and he retweeted it to watch later since Arman was a prominent journalist in the country and he was not aware of what the video was about.

“If there is an insult to our president or other public servants in the video, I posted it unconsciously. The (anonymous) complainant filed this criminal case against me to damage me and my professional reputation,” Kervanci commented on the incident.

In Turkey, insulting president carries a sentence between one and four years, according to the Turkish Penal Code.

The Turkish government has been using social media posts, cartoons, news and articles as evidence for insulting the president and thousands of people have been facing prison sentences.

Between 2010 and 2017, 12,893 cases of insulting the president were filed. Of these, 12,305 were filed under the presidency of Erdogan, who assumed office in 2014.

The courts have convicted defendants in 2,099 of a total of 5,150 cases. There were an additional 660 cases in which a verdict was reached, but the court adjourned before announcing the decision. 873 cases resulted in acquittal.

  19. Explosion outside AfD office in eastern Germany

Police detained three people after a blast damaged the office of the far-right AfD party in the German city of Döbeln. Anti-terror investigators see the blast as an escalation following other acts of anti-AfD vandalism.

German authorities have detained three suspects following a blast which started a fire in the AfD’s local office in Döbeln, officials said on Friday.

The men, aged 29, 32, and 50, are suspected of detonating an “unknown substance” in the street on Thursday evening. The explosion damaged the door and windows of the AfD office and set fire to promotional materials inside, prompting firefighters to deploy to the scene. Nearby cars were reportedly also damaged. No injuries were reported.

On Friday, police said there was a series of attacks against AfD offices in the eastern state of Saxony in recent weeks, but added that most of them were limited to vandalism.

“The attack against the AfD office in Döbeln is extraordinary given that the explosion means accepting that people could be harmed,” the state’s criminal police said.

  20. Liberal critics were wrong: Trump’s sanctions ARE destroying Iran’s economy
By Jeff Dunetz January 4, 2019

In May 2018 when President Trump pulled out of Obama’s dreadful Iran deal and announced that America would be reimposing the U.S. sanctions against Iran that were in place before the JCPOA, the Left went crazy. They claimed unless the U.S. was able to revive the UN sanctions against Iran also and get cooperation from the other P5+1 countries, the sanctions would have no effect.

However, the latest news from the rogue regime proves that the liberals had no idea what they were talking about: The reimposed sanctions are devastating the economy and effectively tying the hands of this state sponsor of terrorism and self-declared enemy of the U.S. and Israel.

The first round of sanctions limited Iran’s non-oil related business and was imposed on August 4. The second round covered oil-related businesses and was effective on Nov. 4. Using figures released by the Iranian government, Radio Farda (the Persian language broadcaster of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) reported Iran’s non-oil exports have halved since the U.S. imposed its second round of sanctions.

  21. Who’s ready for a 2% white privilege tax and a 1% male privilege tax?
By Ben Bowles January 3, 2019

Lisa Jones is. Jones, a self-proclaimed communist whose views place her way left of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the ideological spectrum, is bubbling over with great ideas, judging from her Facebook and Twitter pages. For example, she also advocates doing away with police, prisons, and money and believes that misgendering people who identify as transgender or nonbinary is an act of violence. Jones apparently hasn’t followed her modest proposals through to their logical conclusion since, if she had, she would have realized that with no police, prisons, or money there would be no way to punish offenders.

Which brings us back to her punitive anti-white and anti-male taxes and to the questions, respectively, 2% and 1% of what? If she is envisioning taxing real property, how frequently are these taxes to be levied? Daily? Hourly?

Not all of her ideas are novel. Take her recommendation that the White House be renamed “people’s house.” The presidential residence is already known as The People’s House, and Barack Obama beat her to the punch when it comes to bathing the building in rainbow colors.

“A PASSENGER has been stabbed to death in a “shocking and violent” attack on a commuter train in Surrey this afternoon.

Detectives launched a murder investigation after the man – believed to be in his 50s – suffered a fatal stab wound on a South Western London-bound train at Horsley station in broad daylight. The knife suspect is on the run following the brutal killing between Guildford and London Waterloo. An eyewitness told the BBC there had been a “vicious fight” in the carriage before the man was fatally stabbed onboard the 12.58pm train service travelling between Guildford and London Waterloo. The victim died at the scene.

One unnamed woman passenger said: “There was a lot of blood everywhere in the carriage. I don’t think the poor chap stood a chance.

“The police who were here first started to give him CPR but it was apparently too late to save him and he died while the train was in the station.”

No arrests have been made so far.

Detective Superintendent Gary Richardson, from British Transport Police, said: “This was a shocking and violent attack which took place on-board a train in broad daylight…”

  23. Canadian embassy in Jordan asked to help with deportation of online ISIS supporter (globalnews, Jan 4, 2019)
    https://globalnews.ca/news/4813046/online-isis-supporter-othman-ayed-hamdan-canada/

“The Immigration and Refugee Board has ordered the deportation of a Palestinian man said to be a “danger to the security of Canada.” As Mercedes Stephenson reports, the board’s ruling comes as Canada tries to decide what to do about citizens who were part of ISIS.

Canada’s embassy in Amman has become involved in the attempt to deport a Jordanian citizen who spread Islamic State propaganda online while living in B.C. as a refugee, a hearing heard Thursday.

A liaison officer at the Canadian Embassy has been asked to speak to Jordanian authorities following Othman Ayed Hamdan’s repeated refusals to co-operate with his deportation order.

The request was made by a Canada Border Services Agency removals officer in Vancouver.

“The removals officer is waiting for a response to this request that he made to Jordanian authorities via the CBSA liaison officer in Amman,” a CBSA official Randal Hyland said at the hearing.

The deportation case is the first to target an alleged, online ISIS supporter.

The Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) ordered Hamdan’s deportation in October on the grounds he was a danger to Canada’s security. He was also stripped of his refugee status.

The government was supposed to deport Hamdan “as soon as possible,” but his Jordanian passport has expired and he has refused to fill out the paperwork required to obtain a new one.

The latest attempt to elicit his co-operation occurred on Dec. 6, when a CBSA removals officer visited Hamdan at the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre, where he is being detained.

After speaking to his lawyer on the phone, Hamdan read a statement to the CBSA officer saying that contacting the Jordanian authorities was “premature and ill-advised.”

As a result, the CBSA has asked its liaison officer in Amman to see if the Jordanian government will allow a deportation to take place using an expired Jordanian passport and national identity card.

The CBSA has Hamdan’s identity card and two of his expired passports.

Hamdan arrived at the B.C. border from Washington State in 2002, and made a refugee claim based on what the CBSA now calls a fictitious story about converting to Christianity.

In 2014, while living in Fort St. John, B.C., he began posting messages on Facebook that “identified infrastructure in Canada which could be targets for attack,” according to the IRB.

He also “encouraged lone wolves in the West who could not travel abroad to carry out attacks at home,” the IRB said in its ruling, which found Hamdan had promoted the “social media agenda” of ISIS.

While Hamdan was acquitted of terrorism charges, the Refugee Board ruled he was a danger to security and ordered his deportation. Hamdan has appealed the decision to the Federal Court.

Hamdan declined to participate in Thursday’s detention hearing after claiming he was a victim of persecution and that the proceedings exacerbated his various disorders.

“As a result of the malicious prosecution that I endured at the hands of the minister and RCMP and Crown representatives, and a criminal matter which I was acquitted of, I have developed a multitude of psychological disorders,” he said.

Hyland asked the IRB to keep Hamdan in detention, citing a recent government report that called “Sunni Islamist extremism” Canada’s top terrorist threat and described how ISIS incited supporters to attack the West.

The 2018 Public Report on the Terrorist Threat to Canada also recalled how the two deadly terrorist attacks that followed in Canada in October 2014 were praised online by ISIS supporters.

“Those supporters include Hamdan,” Hyland said.

The IRB said it would rule on Hamdan’s detention next Wednesday.”

  24. Turkey claims FBI officials visiting Ankara to discuss Gulen (WT, Jan 4, 2019)
    https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/jan/4/turkey-claims-fbi-officials-visiting-ankara-discus/

“Turkish media claimed Friday that an American delegation including FBI officials was in the second day of meetings in Ankara to discuss Turkey’s outrage over U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses of masterminding a failed 2016 coup in the country.

While the Trump administration has not confirmed that a U.S. delegation is in Turkey, the official Anadolu news agency reported that a two-day meeting commenced Thursday on U.S. cooperation with Turkish authorities to counter the so-called “Fetullah Terrorist Organization” (FETO), which the Erdogan government claims carried out the coup.

The 11-hour meeting at Ankara Courthouse was attended by Ankara Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor Ramazan Dinc, Public Prosecutor Ali Alper Saylan, Turkish Justice Ministry officials, and the U.S. delegation, including FBI officials, according to Anadolu, which cited Turkish sources as speaking anonymously about the discussions.

The talks scheduled for Thursday and Friday are seen as important for exposing the role of FETO’s U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen and his inner circles, the agency claimed.

It pointed to earlier reports that Ankara prosecutors believe several Gulen operatives visited the U.S. in the lead up to the 2016 coup attempt, claiming that FETO is behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the Turkish state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.”

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-burkina-security/dozens-killed-in-ethnic-violence-in-burkina-faso-idUSKCN1OY1EM?

“About 46 people were killed in ethnic clashes in central Burkina Faso this week, the government said on Friday.

After nightfall on Dec. 31, armed men on motorbikes descended on the village of Yirgou, made up largely of people of Mossi ethnicity, and killed seven people, the government said.

The following day, Yirgou residents killed 39 people in Fulani herding communities across the region in retaliation.

The government earlier this week told Reuters that only 13 people had been killed.

To the north of Burkina Faso, in Mali, ethnic clashes are being fueled by the presence of Islamist militants as Fulani communities are accused of hiding jihadists.

Burkina Faso has seen a spike in Islamist attacks in recent months as jihadists seek to increase their influence across the Sahel. On Dec. 31, the Burkinabe government declared a state of emergency in several northern provinces bordering Mali, though these did not include the region around Yirgou.”

    https://www.jihadwatch.org/2019/01/uk-government-spends-250000-to-protect-jihad-preacher-and-give-him-medical-care-in-jordan

Britain has spent almost £200,000 protecting the welfare of the hate preacher Abu Qatada since he was deported to Jordan in 2013, The Times can reveal.

Under terms agreed by Theresa May when she was home secretary, the government has paid for the cleric to have appointments with human rights workers and doctors for three years.

Britain has spent almost 200,000 pounds protecting the welfare of hate preacher Abu Qatada after he was deported to his native Jordan to face terror charges.

The sum, revealed by The Times newspaper, has sparked anger among both MPs and the public.

  27. Xi Jinping Thinks China Is World’s Only Sovereign State

    by Gordon G. Chang

“I hear prominent Americans, disappointed that China has not become a democracy, claiming that China poses a threat to the American way of life,” Jimmy Carter wrote on the last day of 2018 in a Washington Post op-ed. That claim, Carter tells us, is a “dangerous notion.”

There is nothing more dangerous than a notion from the 39th president, even on China. China, despite what he said, threatens not only America’s way of life but also the existence of the American republic. Chinese ruler Xi Jinping has, in recent years, been making the extraordinary case that the U.S. is not a sovereign state.

The breathtaking position puts China’s aggressive actions into a far more ominous context.

Carter, and almost all others who comment on Chinese foreign policy, see Beijing competing for influence in the current international order. That existing order, accepted virtually everywhere, is based on the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648, which recognizes the sovereignty of individual states that are supposed to refrain from interfering in each other’s internal affairs. Those states now compete and cooperate in a framework, largely developed after World War II, of treaties, conventions, covenants, and norms.

    • Richard: Read the above article and stop and think about what it means. The Chinese are going back to the old idea that all nations on earth are vassals of China, that we owe tribute to China to pay for the privilege of being ruled by China. This attitude by the Chinese Emperors caused a lot of trouble way back when and is going to cause a lot of trouble in the near future.

Almost as troubling is the way that El Teetho Jimmy Carter is selling the US out to China. I know he has sold us out to anyone with a spare dollar but you would think he wouldn’t be so crooked as to sell us out to a bankrupt nation.

      • Richard: Read the above article and stop and think about what it means. The Chinese are going back to the old idea that all nations on earth are vassals of China, that we owe tribute to China to pay for the privilege of being ruled by China.

As I’ve maintained for some time, Islam is a pimple on the @ss of Chinese Communism (the whole mindset, NOT just the government). China’s civilization has been around for several thousand years. They’ve had infinitely more opportunities than Islam to convince themselves about exactly who is the Master Race™. By comparison, Muslims are a bunch of wet behind the ears, Johnny-come-latelies.

        • They are very racist and are the number 1 threat to the world right now, Iran is a close number 2 with Russia a distant 3rd. The articles and videos over the past months about how weak both the Chinese and Iranian economies are says that we may skate a major disaster by having both economies collapse. Their collapsing does bring about another large threat, one or both may decide to do a lot of damage to its enemies to ensure that we don’t remain strong while they are destroyed.

Russia didn’t and China plans for longer periods in the future then Russia but Iran?

  28. ‘They hate Italians and must resign’: Salvini attacks mayors resisting harsh immigration rules

The times when mayors of Palermo, Florence and Naples could cash in on illegal immigrants are over, Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said, vowing that those resisting the new policies will answer before law and history.

“Those who help the illegal immigrants, hate Italians,” Salvini said, blasting his opponents on Facebook and Twitter.

The minister from the conservative Lega Nord Party promised that the rebelling city heads will “answer before law and history.” And it’s no idle threat, as the former mayor of the Calabrian town of Riace is currently under house arrest on charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigration.

“Certain mayors look back fondly on the good old times of immigration, but for them the party is over!” Salvini said.

By “certain mayors” he meant the heads of Palermo, Florence and Naples, who he gave the choice of resigning from their posts.

The three mayors insisted that some parts of Salvini’s security decree aimed at curbing illegal migration to the country were unconstitutional and that they would refuse to follow them.

According to the new decree, migrants can no longer apply for full residency after a two-year asylum stay – but Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando wants his city to continue this practice. Denying migrants access to health care and other essential municipal services would have an opposite effect and put them on the path of crime instead, he argued in the interview to the newspaper La Repubblica.

His resistance to the decree was “not an act of civil disobedience or conscientious objection, but the simple application of the constitutional rights that are guaranteed to all those, who live in our country,” Orlando said.

He also announced plans to take the anti-migrant rules to the Constitutional Court for the judges to rule on how they comply with Italy’s principal law.

The mayor of Palermo was backed by his counterpart from Florence, Dario Nardella, who insisted that his city wouldn’t cave in to the law that “expels asylum-seekers and, without repatriating them, throws them out onto the street.”

Naples Mayor Luigi de Magistris said on Thursday that he was going to open the city’s port to Sea Watch, a NGO ship that had been involved in rescuing migrants trying to cross the into Italy on rafts and rickety boats. The vessel has been stuck in the stormy Mediterranean for more than two weeks now, with 32 asylum-seekers onboard.

“I hope this boat comes to Naples because, despite what the government says, we will let it into the port,” de Magistris said, adding that he “will be first to lead the rescue effort.”

Following his comments, Salvini reiterated that that all the ports in Italy were closed to migrant-rescuing ships.

Salvini’s fellow deputy PM and leader of the Five Star Movement, Luigi Di Maio, dismissed the rebellion of the mayors as “electioneering” and an attempt to achieve publicity by exploiting the migrant issue.

Salvini got his post after the euroskeptic coalition government came to power last year, with the migrant issue playing a key role in the success of Lega Nord and Five Star Movement at the polls. The new government pledged to deport 500,000 migrants that were in the country. Italy has become one of the prime destinations for asylum-seekers from Middle East and North Africa after the Arab Spring shattered many countries in the region.

  29. Bokhari: The Terrifying Rise of Financial Blacklisting

It is the most totalitarian form of blacklisting: not just to be prevented from speaking on a university campus, or to be kicked off social media, but to be shut out of the entire financial system. That is the terrifying new threat to freedom that western societies must now contend with.

Financial blacklisting doesn’t just rob you of a chance to spread your message: it robs you of your ability to do business, your livelihood, your very means of functioning in a capitalist society. Thanks to the encroachment of progressive ideology into the financial industry — including major credit card companies like Visa, Discover, and Mastercard — it has now become a reality.

I first wrote about the rise of financial blacklisting in July, in a column for Breitbart News in which I highlighted the growing tendency of online financial platforms — as well as Visa and MasterCard — to deny service to customers for political reasons. I was surprised to receive a strongly worded comment from the liberal Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), who bluntly warned that banks and credit card companies had become “de facto internet censors.” That even liberal groups had raised the alarm signaled the seriousness of the problem.

  30. Democrats in House introduce bill to fund abortions worldwide
    Calvin Freiburger, LifeSite News

[Ed- Dems waste no time attempting to fundamentally remake U.S.]

Democrats wasted no time asserting their priorities upon taking over the U.S. House of Representatives this week, proposing legislation to fund the federal government which would at the same time reverse one of President Donald Trump’s earliest pro-life accomplishments.

The federal government has been partially shut down since Trump, facing pressure from conservatives, decided at the last minute in December to reject a government funding bill that didn’t include $5 billion to begin constructing the southern border wall he campaigned on. While the media is filled with distress over the shutdown and uncertainty over whether Democrats or Republicans will blink first, most of the government was already funded and remains in operation.

Following her return to the office of House Speaker Thursday, Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi announced that her party would be “offering the Senate Republican Appropriations [Committee] legislation to reopen the government later today,” Fox News reports. The proposal would fund the Department of Homeland Security until February 8 and other federal departments until the end of September.

  31. – CNN – Mueller grand jury extended for up to 6 months

Washington – CNN – Special counsel Robert Mueller’s federal grand jury has been extended for up to six months.

The grand jury, based in Washington, DC, was seated for an 18-month term that began in July 2017 and was set to expire in the coming days.

Under federal rules, the court is able to extend a grand jury’s term for another six months if it is “in the public interest.”

Grand jury activity is secret, except following the 23-person group’s approval of criminal indictments.

Chief Judge Beryl Howell of the DC District Court, who oversees the Mueller grand jury, granted the extension. She does not sit in on its sessions.

  32. ZUCKED UP Mark Zuckerberg halts Facebook stock sale as value PLUMMETS over privacy scandals

The controversial billionaire is facing hard times…

BILLIONAIRE Mark Zuckerberg has halted the sale of his Facebook stock after the company’s value collapsed last year.

The controversial 34-year-old has seen his company fall from grace, and failed to sell a single share in the last three months of 2018.

Back in September 2017, Zuck promised to flog between 35million and 75million of his Facebook shares over 18 months.

It was part of a promise to give away most of his fortune, which requires converting stocks to hard cash.

Since then, he’s sold about 30.4million shares worth roughly $5.6billion (£4.4billion).

But Bloomberg says that the Facebook CEO has stopped selling shares after 2018 saw Facebook’s worth plummet.

  33. FOX News – Mueller grand jury term extended following Friday expiration

A federal grand jury being used by the team of Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been extended, Fox News has learned. The original term of 18 months for the Washington, D.C.-based jury expired on Friday.

Sources close to Chief Judge of U.S. District Court in Washington, Beryl Howell, tell Fox News she has extended the grand jury term.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the extension is for another six months.

A grand jury may serve more than 18 months only if the court, having determined that an extension is in the public interest, extends the grand jury’s service. An extension may be granted for no more than 6 months, except as otherwise provided by statute.

Mueller, 74, took over the federal government’s probe into alleged collusion between President Trump’s campaign and Russian officials in May 2017. Already, his investigation has led to charges for multiple Trump campaign associates, though none of the charges are directly related to any misconduct by the president’s campaign.

Trump has submitted written responses to several questions as part of Mueller’s investigations and has repeatedly denied any “collusion” with Russians.

For the inquiry into the 2016 election, Mueller has the authority to prosecute any crimes uncovered during this investigation, and he was given wide authority to investigate whether Trump or his associates colluded with the Kremlin to win the White House.

Mueller first impaneled a grand jury in the Russia probe in the summer of 2017. The extension of the grand jury’s term on Friday seemingly conflicts with recent reports that Mueller could complete his investigation – and submit a report to the attorney general – next month.

    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/04/knifeman-hijacks-several-vehicles-multiple-crashes-fatal-stabbing/

“A man in Australia fatally stabbed himself after a string of violent incidents including theft of two vehicles, several collisions, and a deadly knife attack.

The unnamed 24-year-old, described as having a “mental health background” by police, was driving a 4WD with no number plates in western Sydney when police pulled him over, news.com.au reports.

This prompted him to ram a police car and make his escape, abandoning his own vehicle and stealing a supermarket lorry once he had fled the scene.

He smashed into as many as five vehicles in the south-west of the iconic city, then hit several more in the suburb of Rockdale before bailing out of the lorry and trying to break into cars which were on the road.

He fatally stabbed a “good Samaritan” who had saw the disturbance and tried to intervene, before car-jacked a taxi and again driving away.

Later, he turned the knife on himself near St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Primary School in Arncliffe.

“[The attacker] has a mental health background. He has not got an extensive criminal history, but he is known to police,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner Mick Fitzgerald.

“It was a man doing everything he could to avoid arrest. His actions, particularly when he stabbed an innocent person, are the actions of someone we believe who had mental health issues,” he added — before offering a curious defence of sorts for the killer.

“It would appear to us that the offender wasn’t trying to intentionally harm people along the way. He could have, if he wished to, harm a great deal of [people],” the police leader suggested.

He said that the man the killer fatally stabbed was “attempting to stop the offender from leaving the scene”.”

  35. Stoneman Douglas Commission Calls for Arming Teachers, More School Security Spending

‘We’ve got to do something differently and people should be able to protect themselves….’

(David Fleshler, Larry Barszewski, Stephen Hobbs and Scott Travis, Sun Sentinel) FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Florida state commission investigating the Parkland school shooting unanimously approved a tough final report Wednesday that puts the responsibility for reform on school districts, law enforcement agencies, Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis and state legislative leaders.

The 458-page report by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission addresses the cascade of errors revealed in the wake of the shooting, including fumbled tips, lax school security policies and unaggressive Broward County sheriff’s deputies who hung back as shots were fired. The report now goes to Gov. Rick Scott, DeSantis, Senate President Bill Galvano and House Speaker Jose Oliva.

The report contains dozens of recommendations. Some would require action by the governor and Legislature, such as the proposals to allow some teachers to carry guns and increase spending on school security. It also calls for laws to be changed to allow school districts to raise taxes for security improvements and to require rather than simply permit mental health providers to notify law enforcement if a patient threatens anyone with harm. Many of the proposals were inspired by errors and weak spots that came to light after the Feb. 14 massacre of 17 people.

    • The Dems are going to scream about this report, it does all that the Conservatives want. Among other things it will be hard for the schools to teach that gun ownership is bad when the teachers are carrying guns.

  36. Saudi Ambassador to US Calls for Action to Combat Child Recruitment in Yemen (aawsat, Jan 4, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1532051/saudi-ambassador-us-calls-action-combat-child-recruitment-yemen

“Saudi Ambassador to the United States Prince Khalid bin Salman condemned on Thursday the Iran-backed Houthis’ recruitment of children in Yemen as a “heinous crime that we can no longer tolerate.”

Saudi Arabia “has proudly rehabilitated hundreds of Yemeni children. Kids often come in shocked by the horrors of war, where they find themselves between death, gunfire and bodily remains,” he said in a series of tweets.

Saudi-led Arab coalition forces “have often encountered child soldiers on the ground fighting for the Houthis,” he added.

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center has started a number of initiatives to rehabilitate them, including bringing them back to school, offering psychological treatment and holding awareness sessions for parents.

“Houthis force recruitment from schools and playgrounds, threatening and terrorizing families who refuse, and proceed to use them as cannon fodder,” stressed Prince Khalid.

“We have repeatedly expressed the need for the international community to take a firm stand against this crime,” he continued.

“For too long, the international community and media have unfortunately ignored the Houthis’ daily violation of children’s rights. Saudi Arabia calls for a serious sustained global initiative to combat the recruitment of children in battles, especially in Yemen. It must end once and for all,” he demanded.

Moreover, the coalition has called out the Houthis’ theft of aid since their 2014 coup, said the ambassador.

Relying on information provided by the militias “has long misled the world on Yemen. Houthis must stop using starvation as a war tactic and allow the delivery of critical aid,” he urged.”
