‘Wild West’ Britain: Children as young as nine fuelling knife crime epidemic warn police (express, Nov 2, 2018)

“WILD West Britain’s soaring violent crime epidemic is in danger of escalating out of control, police chiefs have warned. Unless young children are steered away from street gangs, stabbings and similar offences will inevitably rise, they also said.
Primary school pupils as young as nine are picking up deadly weapons because they are frightened of others. They are then being groomed into violence, the police chiefs said.
The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and the National Police Chiefs’ Council summit was told younger brothers and sisters of gangsters must be targeted in a new public health approach to serious crime.
Assistant Chief Constable Jacqueline Sebire told the conference: “Is this like the Wild West? Yes it is.
“I worry, if we can’t get this right – and we know how to get it right – I do worry the violence will continue.”
Ms Sebire, the council’s lead on serious violent crime, added: “This does feel different.
“In the past people were more careful about doing this in front of cameras or in full view. There’s a disregard for the seriousness of the consequences.
“If their best friend being stabbed to death in front of them isn’t an incentive, I don’t what will be.
“So we need to be there for their siblings.”
Force chiefs called for a new plan which would see police, health and education officials work together to “intervene early” and prevent youngsters from being sucked into a life of crime.
Durham’s chief constable Mike Barton told the Westminster conference: “I think it is the younger siblings.
“When you look at these people there are always family and other people in the community where you can look at what happened five years ago.
“I think we need to look at seven and eight-year-olds, not 10 to 11-year-olds. Increasing numbers of primary school children are being excluded and we need to look at what has happened before and learn from it.
“This isn’t going to go away. It is certainly an epidemic. It feels like a crisis.”
One in four of all knife possession convictions and cautions are now given to under 18s. And startling figures presented to yesterday’s summit revealed 69,000 children were wounded by stabbings or beatings last year.
The shocking statistics also showed 29,000 youngsters were robbed, meaning they were exposed to violence.
And the number of youths caught carrying blades has also increased by 64 per cent, compared with 22 per cent of adults.
Meanwhile the number of under 18s treated in hospital after being stabbed with a blade rose by a fifth in 2016/17.
Officials are concerned about the rising number of children excluded from school and warn that this makes them susceptible to gangland grooming, dubbing it a “pipeline of potential for this violence”.
But police chiefs hope a properly targeted public health approach will stem the flow of children into criminality.
Knife crime campaigners told the Daily Express at least 247 people had been stabbed to death on Britain’s streets so far this year.
Ms Sebire, of Bedfordshire Police, added: “Over the past 12 months, it feels different.
“We have always had people stabbing and shooting each other. But the level of violence, it is not peak and troughs, it is sustained.”
Ms Sebire said she was aware of children as young as nine picking up weapons.
Figures presented to the conference revealed there are currently almost 50,000 children missing from the education system.
In 2016/17, 7,640 pupils were excluded from school – 6,385 from secondary schools and 1,255 from primary – and 38,580 are in pupil referral units amid concern over their behaviour.
Police chiefs said there was a “significant amount of evidence these children are more vulnerable to gang violence”.
Officials yesterday claimed children as young as two or three could show signs of anger and emotional instability which could later lead to them becoming involved in crime.
The number of children connected to gangs has also increased.
A total of 6,570 had links when they were referred to children’s services in 2016/17 – up from 5,200 the year before.
Mr Barton added: “It just feels that this is central to what we need to do. We want to get upstream on this.”
Violent crime has escalated in recent years, with 719 killings recorded in the year to June and robberies rocketing 22 per cent.
Police also recorded more than 100 knife crimes every day last year as offences surged by 12 per cent.
Sex offences also rose by 18 per cent over the same period.
But a public health approach also relies on strong police action to crack down on any offenders.
Chief Constable Dave Thompson of West Midlands Police said: “The public health-based approach in Scotland did rely on a level of police deterrence.
“You can’t do one without the other. If you can’t deal with here and now, you can’t deal with upstream.”
Mr Thompson said the Home Office should allocate funding to areas worst affected, such as London, Birmingham and Manchester.
The police warnings came within hours of the Government launching its new strategy to tackle serious and organised crime.”

Stadium’s press officer Angelica Larsson told Swedish national broadcaster SVT that “something went wrong” and explained that the company was “troubleshooting.” She also assured that Stadium “strongly distances itself from religion, politics, culture, faith, ethnicity and other things that don’t belong in the world of sport.
The burkini is often seen as symbolically charged and is no stranger to controversy. In 2016 it was banned in parts of France. In Sweden, the burkini has also triggered polarizing reactions, with Sara Mohammed, the president of the women’s rights NGO Never Forget Pela and Fadime (GAPF), named after victims of the so-called “honor culture,” also called it a “strong symbol of women’s oppression.””

“The municipality of Karlskrona has rejected calls from the populist Sweden Democrats and the conservative Christian Democrats to ban the public call to prayer at a local mosque.
The municipality rejected the proposal to ban the public call to prayer saying that neither the Sweden Democrats nor the Christian Democrats could prove that the broadcasted Arabic prayer was causing a public disturbance that would warrant it being banned, local newspaper Sydöstran reports.
The Sweden Democrats said, “Prayer announcements in public places and in foreign languages are not part of Swedish society.
“These prayer announcements are not only a call to prayer but also an imposition on other religions.”
Initially, the matter was supposed to have been decided in September but was delayed because lawyers of the municipality claimed they needed time to look into the legality of banning the call to prayer.
The issue of the public broadcast of the call to prayer has been an issue in other municipalities in Sweden like Växjö where, earlier this year, the local community demanded to be allowed to broadcast the call through a loudspeaker every Friday to aid in integration efforts.
Several months later, police in Växjö granted the Islamic community the permission to broadcast the call to prayer although some, like local Moderate Party politician Anna Tenje, criticised the move.
“If the Church of Sweden set up a tape recorder in the cathedral that proclaimed God’s message, I would have objected to that too. I like the secular society and would like to defend it,” she said.
While Sweden has, in some cases, allowed the broadcast of the call to prayer, other countries in Europe have been more hesitant, such as Germany where the Gelsenkirchen Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia issued a ban on the practice earlier this year.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington, D.C., City Council is preparing to vote on a bill to lower the voting age to 16 for all elections, both local and federal.
WTOP-FM reports the bill won 3-0 approval in the Judiciary and Public Safety committee Thursday and will get a final vote before the full council this month.
The 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees citizens 18 and older the right to vote, but scholars have said it doesn’t prevent a state, or in this case, the nation’s capital, from setting a lower age.
Council member Charles Allen says his bill will “enfranchise the District’s young people and bring their voices into the political process.”

Migrants traveling to US sue Trump, government; claim violation of constitutional rights
A dozen migrants traveling by foot from Honduras to the U.S. to seek asylum filed a class-action lawsuit Thursday against President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security and others, claiming a violation of their due process under the Fifth Amendment.
The Fifth Amendment states that, “no person… shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”
A recent PBS report cited former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who ruled in 1993 case that “it is well established that the Fifth Amendment entitles aliens to due process of law in a deportation proceeding.”
Twelve Honduran nationals, including six children, are listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. The suit, which was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., said it is widely known that Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador are “undergoing a well-documented human rights crisis.” The lawsuit also claims that the plaintiffs’ right to the Administrative Procedures Act and the Declaratory Judgement Act were being infringed upon.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday he plans to sign an order next week that could lead to the large-scale detention of migrants crossing the southern border and bar anyone caught crossing illegally from claiming asylum — two legally dubious proposals that mark his latest election-season barrage against illegal immigration.
Trump also said he had told the U.S. military mobilizing at the southwest border that if U.S. troops face rock-throwing migrants, they should react as though the rocks were “rifles.”
“This is an invasion,” Trump declared, as he has previously on a subject that has been shown to resonate strongly with his base of Republican supporters. He made his comments at the White House in a rambling, campaign-style speech that was billed as a response to caravans of migrants traveling slowly by foot toward the U.S. border. But Trump offered few details on how exactly he planned to overhaul an asylum system he claimed was plagued by “endemic abuse” that he said “makes a mockery of our immigration system.”
U.S. immigration laws make clear that migrants seeking asylum may do so either at or between border crossings. But Trump said he would limit that to official crossing points. The U.S. also doesn’t have space at the border to manage the large-scale detention of migrants, with most facilities at capacity. Trump said the government would erect “massive tents” instead.

The annual Freedom House study of 65 countries found global internet freedom declined for the eighth consecutive year in 2018, amid a rise in what the group called “digital authoritarianism.”
The Freedom on the Net 2018 report found online propaganda and disinformation have increasingly “poisoned” the digital space, while the unbridled collection of personal data is infringing on privacy.

No One Wants to Campaign With Bill Clinton Anymore
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — When a Republican state legislator in Arkansas pushed last year to rename the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Clarke Tucker stood up for the former president.
“The argument was that the people of Arkansas don’t support the Clintons,” said Mr. Tucker, a Democratic member of the state House of Representatives. “My thought at the time was, well, the people of Arkansas voted for Clinton eight times.”
But now, as the Democratic nominee in the tightest congressional race in this state, Mr. Tucker is happy for the former president and his wife to remain a plane ride away. Mr. Clinton, who was governor and attorney general of Arkansas, was once a near-ubiquitous presence helping Democrats in tough races back home, but the former president hasn’t been asked to appear on the trail for Mr. Tucker.
There are no plans for him to do so. Or, for that matter, appear publicly with any Democrat running in the midterm elections.

U.S. lifts sanctions on two top Turkish officials
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States said on Friday it lifted sanctions imposed on two top officials in Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s cabinet, a sign of improved relations after Turkey freed an American pastor from detention three weeks ago.
The United States had imposed sanctions on Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu in August over the case of American pastor Andrew Brunson.
Turkey promptly matched the move on Friday by lifting sanctions on two corresponding U.S. officials – U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Brunson, who had lived in Turkey for more than 20 years, had been accused of masterminding the 2016 coup attempt against Erdogan. He was allowed to return to the United States in October after two years of detention.
Erdogan and Trump had discussed improving frosty relations between Washington and Ankara during a call between the two leaders, the Turkish presidency said on Thursday.
The White House did not have any immediate comment on the lifting of the sanctions.

Some 5,000 protesters have rallied against releasing Asia Bibi demanding that the acquittal verdict be overturned and the woman to be publicly hanged, according to AFP.
In 2010, Asia Bibi was convicted of insulting the Prophet Muhammad during a quarrel with two farm workers.
Blasphemy is a very sensitive issue in Pakistan, punishable by death. The country’s telecommunications companies have blocked hundreds of websites deemed to be blasphemous, in particular those containing pornography.
According to a US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) study, Pakistan’s blasphemy law is used at a level unequaled to any other country, with 14 individuals on death row and 19 serving life sentences.
Pakistan’s Federal Shariat Court has ruled that the death penalty should be the only penalty for blasphemy, the USCIRF said.
The USCIRF report listed Bangladesh, Egypt, Greece, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Turkey as countries with strict blasphemy laws that are strongly enforced.”
PAKISTAN – Govt & Tehreek-e-Labbaik reach agreement to end protests
Negotiations between government and Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan have been successful. The agreement to this effect has been signed by Minister of Religious Affairs Dr. Noor ul Haq Qadri and Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat from the government side.
Patron in Chief of Tehreek e Labbaik Pakistan Pir Muhammad Afzal Qadri and Central Nazim Muhammad Waheed Noor also signed the document on behalf of their organization.
According to agreement, a review appeal has been filed in the case of Asia Bibi which is the legal right of complainants and government will have no objection on it. Immediate legal action will be taken on deaths, if any, in the movement against the acquittal of Asia Bibi.
The agreement adds that people who have been arrested against the acquittal of Asia Masih from October 30th onwards will be immediately released.

“The Afghanistan war cannot be won militarily and peace will only be achieved through a political resolution with the Taliban, the newly-appointed American general in charge of US and NATO operations has conceded.
In his first interview since taking command of NATO’s Resolute Support mission in September, Gen. Austin Scott Miller provided NBC News with a surprisingly candid assessment of the seemingly never-ending conflict, which began with the US invasion of Afghanistan in October, 2001.
“This is not going to be won militarily. This is going to a political solution,” Miller said.
He mused that the Taliban is also tired of fighting and may be interested in starting to “work through the political piece” of the 17-year-old war.
But it’s not clear if the Taliban is open to negotiations. Last month, a top Taliban commander told RT, in a rare interview, that the group’s leaders had no desire to negotiate with the Americans.
Described for years as a stalemate, the conflict has been tipping in the Taliban’s favor in recent months. Even by US military estimates, the Afghan government controls or influences just over half of the country’s 407 districts – a record low since the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, began tracking district control in November 2015.
To make matters worse, casualties among Afghan government forces have skyrocketed in recent months. Afghan security forces suffered 1,000 fatalities in August and September, according to the Pentagon.
Miller’s desire for a political settlement was echoed earlier by the State Department, which said in August that the US was doing everything it could to facilitate peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.
The new US commander has experienced the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan first-hand. In October, Miller survived a Taliban attack in Kandahar, which left a prominent Afghan warlord and local intelligence chief dead.”

“FOUR members of a gang that groomed and sexually abused vulnerable girls were told their crime “defies understanding” as a judge jailed them yesterday.
Some of Mohammed Akram, Niaz Ahmed, Mohammed Imran Ibrar and Asif Bashir’s teenage victims were plied with drugs and alcohol before being abused.
The four were convicted at Leeds Crown Court of offences against the three girls between 2004 and 2010, which were described as part of a cycle of “depravity and exploitation”.
Judge Simon Phillips told them the girls’ victim impact statements made “harrowing reading”.
They included one who felt like “used goods” at just 17 and only managed to escape her abusers when she became pregnant.
The four men were among a 20-strong gang that carried out “inhuman” abuse of a total of 15 girls in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, from 2004 to 2011.
Their prosecution was split into three separate trials.
Akram, Ahmed, Ibrar and Bashir were found guilty of 10 offences last month.
It was towards the end of the second of these trials, in May, that English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson was arrested as he reported about the case on Facebook from outside the court.
The gang was spearheaded by ringleader Amere Singh Dhaliwal, 36, of Huddersfield, who received a life sentence in June with a minimum term of 18 years, for 22 rapes involving 11 girls.
The four sentenced yesterday, all from Huddersfield, were jailed for a total of 36 years.
Judge Phillips told Akram, 33, Ahmed, 54, Ibrar, 34, and Bashir, 33: “The way that you treated these girls defies understanding. This abuse was vile and wicked.”
The girls became “conditioned and immersed” in the abuse, the court heard, with one saying in a statement that she felt as though her life was at risk every time she left her house.
Judge Phillips told the court some of the complainants were watching the sentencing via a TV link and said: “It is likely that all of these girls will never recover from the abuse they suffered.”
Akram was jailed for 17 years for trafficking for sexual exploitation and rape and Ahmed received five years for sexual assault and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
Ibrar received three years for trafficking for sexual exploitation and actual bodily harm and Bashir was sentenced to 11 years for rape and attempted rape.”

“Armed police stormed the London HQ of Sony Music as terrified office workers cowered under tables when a fight broke out between two canteen workers in which one man was stabbed.
Sony employees heard screaming coming from the canteen on an upstairs floor of the office on Derry Street in Kensington, West London, which also houses Simon Cowell’s entertainment company. It is not thought he was there at the time.
A man was arrested and two people were injured, with one the casualties taken to a hospital and the other to a major trauma centre. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.
Footage from the scene shows a casualty being wheeled away in a stretcher, while in another video shows a man being led away in handcuffs.
A Sony Music spokesman said: ‘Two members of the catering team were involved in a violent altercation. The incident is now in the hands of the Metropolitan Police.’
Shocked members of staff inside the Sony building told of the unfolding chaos as police ordered everyone to evacuate.
A Sony employee, who did not want to be named, said: ‘We just heard screaming and running and people slamming doors.’
The men, who are employed by a catering company, were ‘running round chasing each other’ and ‘slashing each other up’, he added.
A worker inside the building tweeted at just after 11am: ‘Under tables in a locked office in the Sony building and there’s banging and screaming downstairs. Freaking out!!!’
She later added: ‘There was a stabbing downstairs. All our remaining in our locked rooms but we think police are now here.’
Another Sony worker told the Standard: ‘It was between two kitchen staff. They were in uniform.
‘There was a lot of shouting and commotion. It looked like they were having a fight. One had fallen over and was on his back and the other was standing over him. I thought he was raining punches down, but then I saw the knife.
‘It was about six or seven inches long, and he was standing over him trying to get him, stabbing downwards as the other man put his arms up to defend himself.
‘He was going nuts. There was a lot of shouting. Other staff were standing around – they didn’t want to get too close because he had a massive knife.’
He said he saw the victim, who worked for a catering contractor, stabbed in the upper thigh, before the pair were separated.
‘The guy with the leg injury had a towel wrapped around his leg, and the attacker was sitting down on the floor, still obviously very angry, with people trying to calm him down, and paper towels wrapped around his arm.’
Photos showed a large number of police cars and ambulances in front of the building in the upscale neighborhood.
The witness said there were two areas of blood on the floor, while another woman appeared to have been slightly hurt after apparently falling over in the melee…”

“A child migrant row has erupted over claims a “30-year-old man” is being taught in a secondary school alongside children after he “fooled” immigration officials.
Photographs of the pupil with a moustache and beard in class have been posted on social media prompting some parents to threaten to remove their children from the Suffolk school unless his “real” age is established.
The Year 11 pupil, said to be 15 and originally from Iran, started at Stoke High School, Ipswich, in September having arriving unaccompanied here earlier this year. A school pupil posted a picture on Snapchat of his new GCSE classmate asking: “How’s there a 30-year-old man in our maths class?”
After parents expressed concern that an adult could be mixing with the academy’s 680-pupils the school contacted the Home Office which launched an investigation.
The pupil has been asked to not attend school until the investigation is completed.
One mother whose son is in the same year as the migrant student said: “Parents have been pulling their children out of school left right and centre.
“Looking at photos of this man, he is clearly older than 30. How can someone like this be eating with children, changing with children and learning with our children while pretending to be a teenager?
“He could be harmless but he could also be a dangerous man. I am terrified to think what would happen if he started a relationship with a young girl who thought he was her age.”
She said her son believes the pupil speaks little English and struggles to make himself understood with his teachers…”

Assistant chief constable Jacqueline Sebire of Bedfordshire police said that after more than 20 years in the force, the past few years has felt “completely different,” adding:
“Wild West? It can be… it’s happening in broad daylight, they’re in public spaces.”
She was speaking to a joint summit of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and the National Police Chiefs’ Council summit in London, where other top cops expressed concern about rising violent crime and slammed the focus on hate crimes and offensive comments.
THe senior officer explained that in the year to June there were 69,000 child woundings — defined as a stabbing or other violent incident resulting in a severe injury to a child aged between ten and 15 years old — an increase of 4,000 on the year before.
According to The Times, she said: “This feels completely different. I’ve worked in some really challenging London boroughs.
She continued: “This level of violence, this constant torrent of every single day another stabbing, another violent incident that we can’t seem to get ahead of.”
Adding: “There are children as young as 12 involved in stabbings. We have nine and 10-year-olds carrying knives.”
Sebire also explained how violent clashes were happening in public spaces in broad daylight, showing footage of youths shooting each other in a car park.
The “disregard to some of the consequences or that they might get found out, that’s what feels different to me”, she said. “We’ve always had violence, we’ve always had people shoot and stab each other.
“But the level of increase and just how sustained it is… it’s just constant. I worry that if we can’t get this right with [agency] partners, and as a society and a community, I do worry that this will continue.”
According to statistics released last month, one in five adults in England and Wales experienced crime last year whilst knife crime in London has hit its highest ever level.
For the year ending June 2018, homicide has risen by 14 percent, violent crime involving blades or knives by 12 percent, sexual offences by 18 percent, and robbery by 22 percent…”

“The Hungarian camerawoman who made headline news after she was filmed tripping up migrants as they ran away from police has been acquitted by the country’s top court.
As Breitbart London reported at the time of the incident, which took place at the height of Europe’s migrant crisis in September 2015, Petra Laszlo was fired from her job at right-wing broadcaster N1TV when the footage of her kicking a girl and tripping up a man and his son was broadcast across the globe.
Following international outrage over the clip, Laszlo apologised for her actions in a letter published by newspaper Magyar Nemzet explaining that she “panicked” after hundreds of migrants broke out of a holding camp close to the Hungary-Serbia border and rushed a police line.
Sentenced to three years probation in January last year, the Hungarian was acquitted on Tuesday by the country’s highest court when it ruled that her actions, “while morally incorrect and illicit”, did not amount to criminal activity, and noted it had taken into account the context of “an assault by several hundred migrants fleeing a police intervention”.
“I turned and saw several hundred people charging toward me, it was quite incredibly frightening,” recalled Laszlo, who had reported being the recipient of “many death threats” after attention was drawn to the video.
After an outpouring of support from the international community, the man whom Laszlo attempted to trip up in the footage, Osama Abdul Mohsen, was offered asylum in Spain and a job at a football academy near Madrid.
Mohsen said he refused to accept Laszlo’s apology when he told an interview with CNN: “I tell her, be sure you Hungarian journalist that karma will get back to you, and God will not leave this be.”

The bus was traveling from the Egyptian city of Sohag to the Monastery of Saint Samuel the Confessor, in Minya, both south of Cairo, according to the church’s official television channel.
Egypt’s government news service released a statement from an unnamed security official saying at least 12 people were injured. Earlier Friday, the church television channel had said 10 people were killed.
The church said in a statement that the bus was carrying several members of the same family. Graphic images shared by the church showed children among the injured.

“Pakistani police and the family of prominent cleric Maulana Samiul Haq, who also was known as the “father of the Taliban,” say he has been killed in a knife attack at his home in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
Haq’s son, Hamidul Haq, says his father was killed Friday.
Yousaf Shah, Haq’s spokesman, said the attacker’s identity and their motive were not immediately known. Haq was the head of his faction of the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam party.
The religious scholar was the founder of the famous Haqqania seminary, where dozens of Afghan leaders have received their education.
His seminary is located in the town of Akora Khattak in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.
Police say they have transported Haq’s body to a hospital and officers are still investigating.”

“The Nigerian army has cited a video of US President Donald Trump, in which he says soldiers should respond with force to migrants throwing stones, to justify opening fire on a Shia group this week.
“When they throw rocks… consider it as a rifle,” Mr Trump says in the clip.
Nigerian police have arrested 400 members of a Shia Muslim sect after days of deadly protests in the capital.
Amnesty International has criticised Nigeria’s army for the killings, saying the Shia protesters were peaceful.
But a spokesman for the Nigerian army says their decision to fire live rounds at protesters in Abuja was justified because they were armed, telling the BBC “this is what [Mr] Trump was talking about”.
The army’s official Twitter account shared the video adding the caption “please watch and make your deductions”.
The clip shows the US president saying, in reference to Central American migrants, “they want to throw rocks at our military, [then] our military fights back”.
Nigeria Army spokesman Brig Gen John Agim says the army posted the video in reaction to the rights group’s report accusing the army of using weapons against Shia protesters.
The army did not mention the fact that the US embassy in Abuja has urged Nigerian authorities to “take appropriate action to hold accountable those responsible for violations of Nigerian law”.
The number of Shia Muslim protesters killed by Nigeria’s army in the capital, Abuja, in clashes which began at the weekend, has not been independently verified.
The Nigerian army says six protesters have been killed, but the protest group itself says dozens died, and rights group Amnesty International says the true number is 45.
Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), have been demanding the release of their leader Ibraheem Zakzaky who has been in custody for 34 months.
Disputing Amnesty’s statement that protesters were unarmed, Brig Agim told the BBC “police found 31 petrol bombs with the protesters as well as guns, knives and stones”.
“The Shia people always obstruct the work we’re doing,” he added, saying they had blocked an arms convoy at the weekend and overrun a checkpoint on Monday.
Brig Agim said it was “not true that they were protesters”, and described them as “the aggressors”.
