Launch of offensive hinges on failure or success of talks with extremist group
Beirut – Key brokers held last-ditch talks on Thursday on the fate of Syria’s only remaining rebel-held province, hoping to stave off a regime offensive the UN has warned could spark catastrophe.
Regime forces have been massing around Idlib for days and looked poised to launch what could be the last major battle of the civil war that has torn Syria apart since 2011.
After retaking a succession of rebel bastions around the country this year, the regime of President Bashar Al Assad has set its sights on Idlib.
The province’s most powerful armed faction is the Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS) group and neighbouring Turkey is trying to use its influence to avert a major offensive against it.
“The negotiations between Turkey and HTS are still under way,” said the head of the Britain-based Syria Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul Rahman.
Russia, whose 2015 military intervention in support of Al Assad helped the regime reclaim much of the ground it lost in the early days of the seven-year conflict, wants the extremist outfit to disband, he said.
“This is the condition set by Moscow to avert a broad offensive … Its launch hinges on the failure or success of these talks with HTS.”
In comments published on its propaganda agency Ibaa, HTS appeared to leave the door open to a negotiated settlement.
“The issue of the disbanding – should it ever take place – is one that would be discussed internally by the alliance’s consultative council but not dictated by local or foreign parties,” it said.
“We in HTS are striving to find an effective solution in the liberated Syrian north that would protect our people from a possible offensive by the criminal regime and its allies.”
While Turkey actively sponsors rebel forces in Idlib, its influence over the former Al Qaida affiliate is less clear and Abdul Rahman warned the chances of success were slim.
“Turkey’s relationship with HTS is a complicated one but may best be framed as cooperative animosity,” said analyst Elizabeth Teoman, of the Institute for the Study of War.
Turkey, Russia and fellow regime backer Iran all operate “observation points” in Idlib as part of a “de-escalation” deal agreed last year that was meant to reduce bloodshed in the province.
But with a regime offensive looming, the Turkish military has been reinforcing its 12 monitoring posts.
During a press conference with his Saudi counterpart in Moscow on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hinted the assault may be imminent.
“It is necessary to disassociate the so-called moderate opposition from terrorists and at the same time prepare an operation against them while minimising risks for the civilian population,” Lavrov said.
“This abscess needs to be liquidated.”
Iran’s top diplomat also held previously unannounced talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met Erdogan for a hour but little filtered out on the nature of the discussions.
Russian media reported this week that Moscow has been reinforcing its military set-up in the region and currently has 10 warships and two submarines in Syrian waters.
The prospect of a massive Russian-backed offensive in a province that is home to some three million people – half of them already displaced from other parts of Syria – has raised fears of a new humanitarian tragedy.
UN chief Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday he was “deeply concerned about the growing risks of a humanitarian catastrophe in the event of a full-scale military operation in Idlib.”
One of the fears is that the regime will resort to using chemical weapons, as it did during an offensive against rebels in the Eastern Ghouta enclave earlier this year.
Another is the presence in the province of large numbers of fighters and civilians who have preferred to leave their homes rather than submit to Damascus rule.
Idlib has been used as a relief valve for those evacuated from other rebel pockets like Eastern Ghouta following their negotiated surrender to the regime.
But fighters who reject similar surrender deals for Idlib will have nowhere to go, heightening the chances of even deadlier battles if an all-out offensive is launched.
“The rebels, as well as desperate civilians, have sheltered in Idlib, but now there is no other ‘Idlib’ into which they can flee,” the Soufan Group think tank said.

“Claiming there are more than a million vacant jobs in Germany, Angela Merkel’s government is set to slash immigration restrictions so non-EU migrants can be shipped in to fill roles in vocational careers.
After years of calls for reform, largely from corporations, business associations, and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the nation’s interior ministry revealed a paper of key points agreed by ministers and all three parties in the grand coalition.
Hailing the plans, under which big business would find it much easier to import workers, the newspaper Handelsblatt reported that Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), has finally relented to reform after “resisting the creation of new immigration laws for 20 years”.
“In fact, the CDU and CSU had long resisted seeing Germany as a nation of immigrants,” the newspaper criticised, lamenting that the centre-right parties’ reluctance to craft fresh border control policies with corporate input meant that migrants were forced to migrate illegally “in order to gain any prospect of residing” in the EU nation.
“The result of this was overburdened authorities, a backlog of paperwork and years of uncertainty for refugees and for businesses desperately seeking staff. In short: chaos and frustration,” according to Handelsblatt, which said new laws should be in place by Christmas.
Geared less towards graduates — who are already favoured under current rules — the draft system would make it much easier to import non-European individuals who have gone through vocational training, according to local media.
Under the drafted plans, the government would scrap what companies believe are the biggest “hurdles” for overseas recruitment including the requirement that German job seekers are given preference above overseas labour, and that they may only hire people in professions the government says are in short supply.
While Eurostat figures show there are almost six million Europeans aged 16 to 25 looking for jobs, as parts of southern Europe continue to suffer crippling youth unemployment rates, Britain’s Financial Times declared recruiting non-EU migrants an“obvious” solution to a “lack of skilled labour … so pervasive that it is inflicting serious damage on the German economy”.
“You cannot believe how hard it is to find people,” said freight company boss Herbert Striebich, who told the newspaper his business needs at least six warehouse workers and five truck drivers.
According to Euractiv Germany, plans for reform have been welcomed by economists and employers, with Federal Association of small and medium-sized business president Hermann Sturm stating: “We are very pleased that the government parties now finally want to create a reasonable immigration law, which SMEs have long been demanding”.
“In the competition for qualified employees or junior staff, small and medium-sized companies almost always have the disadvantage compared to large companies,” he told the Brussels-based media outlet.
The German Greens responded with glee to plans to prise open the border, believing it marks the death of conservatives’ “dogged and stubborn” belief that Germany is not, in fact, a so-called ‘nation of immigrants’ in the same vein as the U.S, reported Deutsche Welle.
The public broadcaster noted that trade unions were more reserved about the news, however, along with the anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which warned more migration from the third world is sure to put strain on the country’s public services.
Speaking for AfD, Alice Weidel remarked: “Plans to abolish the requirement that companies must give German workers priority [before they are allowed to bring in foreign labour] would act as a licence for wage dumping, allowing additional competition into the labour market.””

“Following the docking of the Aquarius in Marseilles, no migrant transport NGO vessels are currently operating in the Mediterranean as some face increasing legal pressure from European countries.
Of the currently operating migrant transport NGOs, not one has a vessel that was not docked in port at the start of this week, with the ships Lifeline, Sea Watch 3, and the Seefuchs all being kept in dock in Malta, Il Giornale reports.
Since June, the vessel MV Lifeline has been impounded in Malta. Maltese authorities have questioned the captain who now faces charges of steering an unregistered vessel due to the fact he had labelled the ship a “pleasure yacht” and had no flag flying when in international waters. A verdict in the case is expected in September.
While the Aquarius has been able to operate, despite Italian populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini refusing port access, troubles for the NGO who operate the vessel, SOS Méditerranée, have been growing.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that the ship had been using the flag of Gibraltar when the Italian government demanded the UK take responsibility for 140 migrants on board the vessel.
Shortly after the Italian government’s comments, the Gibraltar Maritime Administration (GMA) issued a “notice of removal” to the crew operating the vessel to remove the flag citing the fact the GMA had asked the ship to stop all search and rescue activity in June and July, which the Aquarius crew had ignored.
While migrant transport NGOs have been stuck in port, migrants have still managed to be ferried by other vessels, including most recently the Italian coastguard ship Diciotti. Interior Minister Salvini allowed the ship to dock, but he resisted allowing the migrants to step foot in Italy, demanding other countries promise to share the burden.
Albania offered to take in 18 of the 140 migrants but now an NGO funded by left-wing Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros is attempting to block the migrants travelling to Albania.
The Association for Juridical Studies on Immigration (ASGI) has denounced the plan to send the migrants to Albania saying the asylum seekers should not be taken to Albania “against their will” if they do not want to go there.
President of ASGI Lorenzo Trucco argued that Albania is not a member of the European Union and described the move as “an attack on the asylum system”.
Trucco was slammed by Salvini who said of the migrants: “They say they are running away from the war and now they make a fuss about where to go?””

“China said Thursday that U.S. lawmakers were wasting taxpayer money by urging President Donald Trump’s administration to impose sanctions on Chinese officials allegedly tied to the mass internment of ethnic minority Muslims in camps in the far west.
The lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin urging the government to apply sanctions to address the “ongoing human rights crisis” in the region of Xinjiang (SHIN’-jhang), in the latest sign that the detentions are raising concerns among Western leaders and governments.
Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang are being detained and tortured and face “egregious restrictions on religious practice and culture” and other abuses, said the letter, which was signed by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith and 15 others. It was provided to the media on Wednesday.
The letter singles out Xinjiang’s top official, Chen Quanguo, accused by many of turning the region into a police surveillance state and implementing a system of internment camps, also known as “re-education centers,” where members of the Uighur (‘WEE-gur) and other Muslim minorities are locked up for months without trial.
“The detention of as many as a million or more Uighurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in ‘political reeducation’ center or camps requires a tough, targeted, and global response,” the letter said.
Former detainees who spoke to The Associated Press described the internment camps as facilities policed by armed guards where Muslims were forced to disavow their religious beliefs, criticize themselves and their loved ones and give thanks to the ruling Communist Party. Beatings and deaths have been reported despite authorities’ tight control on information from the region.
The detention program has swept up people, including relatives of American citizens, on ostensible offenses ranging from accessing foreign websites to contacting overseas relatives. Other aspects of the security crackdown the AP has detailed include all-encompassing digital surveillance, mass deployment of police and severe regulations against religious customs and dress.
On Thursday in Beijing, the Foreign Ministry said Chinese citizens enjoy freedom of religion according to the law and that the American lawmakers should not “threaten to impose sanctions at every turn on other countries.”
“I would like to advise the individual U.S. lawmakers to focus on and perform their duties well because they are spending taxpayer money,” spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters. “They should certainly serve the Americans properly instead of poking their noses in other countries’ affairs and pretending to be a judge of human rights.”
China denies such internment camps exist but says criminals involved in minor offenses are sent to “vocational education and employment training centers” to help with their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
“The argument that ‘a million Uighurs are detained in re-education centers’ is completely untrue,” Chinese representative Hu Lianhe said earlier this month in responding to questions raised by the U.N.’s Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in Geneva.
China insists tough measures are needed as part of a “People’s War on Terror” to purge separatist and religious extremist elements from Xinjiang, a vast region with more than 10 million Muslims. Deadly ethnic riots in its capital in 2009 killed hundreds and sporadic violence occurred in subsequent years. But reports of violence are increasingly rare and the existence of an effective organized resistance to Chinese rule is widely doubted.

Angry French farmers sow Chinese-owned field in investor protest

Mad cow disease diagnosed in Florida beef cow
TALLAHASSEE, FLA. (WPVI) —
Florida’s Department of Agriculture announced today that a case of mad cow disease has been detected in a 6-year-old mixed breed beef cow.
The department didn’t say where the cow was, but emphasized that it never entered the slaughter channels or food supply.
Mad cow is a progressive neurologic disease.
This form of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) is not contagious, and is different from Classic BSE, which has been linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in people.
Classic BSE occurred in the United Kingdom in the 1980s, in cattle which had been given the infectious prion agent, such as meat-and-bone meal containing protein from rendered infected cattle.

This national outcry has already prompted the sign’s owner to relinquish his personal safety by coming forward to not only take credit for the billboard’s construction but issue yet another daring message to “truthophobes” who deny its credibility.
WTHR reports that Don Woodsmall, who is a Duke law school graduate, has proudly taken responsibility for owning the billboard but says that while he is unafraid to show his face to the Muslim community, he’ll protect his clients’ identities. Woodsmall came forward to local media to slam free speech objectors, confidently declaring that he would gladly remove the sign himself — all they have to do is prove the statement wrong.
In his statement, Woodsmall says, “It is interesting to note… the Muslim community knew exactly who it was referring to. The truth is a powerful weapon.”
Woodsmall explained that he only agreed to erect the sign after thoroughly researching each claim and finding proof directly in the passages of the Quran and hadith. In addition, he spoke to at least half a dozen Islamic scholars who confirmed the scriptures in question.
“I was convinced that each point listed on the billboard was historically and factually true. I would encourage others to do their own research to verify the veracity of each and every point,” Woodsmall wrote. He also noted that he would remove the billboards if the statements are proven to be false.
Despite Muslims demanding that Woodsmall names his clients, undoubtedly for nefarious purposes, the billboard owner refuses to endanger their lives. The unwavering owner slammed the sign’s critics, reminding them that it is the very definition of free speech to question and tear apart lies and toxic ideologies.

If the left considers it “hate speech” to summarize these Islamic passages, then it would mean that the Quran and hadith are hate speech. It’s not racist to denounce Muhammad’s ownership of dozens of black slaves as racist. In fact, it’s racist to defend Muhammad’s slave ownership and attempt to censor it.
The truth is that the prophet Muhammad boasted of his own slave ownership, sex slavery, marriage to a child, and mass slaughter of unbelieving men, women, and children. Suspects are a 23-year-old Syrian and a 22-year-old Iraqi, who were taken into custody near the scene.
The German Prosecutor released an arrest warrant for them on 27 August.
One of these suspects was named in the days after the attack as Yousif Ibrahim Abdullah from Bashiqa, and the arrest warrant for him was leaked in multiple newspapers on August 28.
This goes against all German privacy regulations. Abdullah is accused of stabbing [ Daniel ] Hillig five times, including the fatal hits to his pericardium and lung.
The other suspect was named as Alaa Sheikhi, with his accusations not revealed at the same time as his name.

The leak of the warrant was a highly unusual occurrence that drew sharp criticism across Germany, which has strict privacy guidelines for judicial proceedings, and raised concerns of possible links between police and anti-migrant parties.
Critics said the warrant, which contained details of the number of stab wounds, may have been leaked to further inflame anger against migrants.
The stabbing and subsequent protests have exposed deep divisions in German society over Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 2015 decision to open the door to more than one million migrants, mostly Muslims fleeing Middle East conflicts.
The incident has also laid bare close links between a range of anti-migrant groups, including soccer hooligans and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, and their ability to quickly mobilize thousands of demonstrators.
Prosecutors on Wednesday said they had launched an investigation into the leak and had taken steps to protect two witnesses named in the document.
The deputy premier of the state, Martin Dulig, a Social Democrat, suggested in two German media interviews that the leak had likely come from police or judicial authorities. “We have a bigger problem to deal with there,” he told broadcaster MDR.
A spokesman for the Dresden prosecutor’s office, which is handling the investigation, said the circle of those who had access to the document was not small.
ANTI-MIGRANT RIOTS
Neither the Iraqi, nor a second suspect arrested in the stabbing, a 23-year-old Syrian man, had engaged an attorney, making it unlikely the leak came from them, experts said.
Saxon police last week apologized for a separate incident involving an off-duty police employee at an anti-Islam rally.
The AfD and PEGIDA, a far-right group that is under observation by intelligence agencies, say they will march again in Chemnitz on Saturday to “mourn Daniel Hillig (the stabbing victim) and the others killed by Germany’s forced multiculturalisation.”
PEGIDA co-founder Lutz Bachmann was among the first to publish the arrest warrant on Tuesday evening, along with a group called “Pro Chemnitz” and a local AfD politician.
Fifty-seven percent of Germans view the anti-migrant riots, during which at least 10 people raised their arms in the banned “Hitler salute”, as a danger to democracy, a new Civey poll showed.
Ninety percent of AfD backers did not see the protests as a threat to democracy, it showed.
AfD leader Alexander Gauland justified the anti-migrant riots as self-defense in an interview with Die Welt newspaper. “When a homicide like this occurs, it’s normal that people flip out. Self-defense is certainly not vigilante justice.”
Merkel and her cabinet discussed the situation during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday and underscored their opposition to any form of vigilance justice, Seehofer told reporters. Such actions were “completely unacceptable.”
But U.N. human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein called for more widespread denunciation of what he called “shocking” images from Chemnitz. “We really need a concentration of voices now to say that when we have incitement to hatred this is prohibited under international human rights law,” he told reporters.

GENEVA — Images of far-right protestors delivering Nazi salutes in Germany this week were “really shocking,” the UN rights chief said Wednesday, warning against growing “amnesia” for the horrors of past European wars.
A knife killing Sunday in Germany’s ex-communist eastern region of Saxony, which has long been a hotspot for xenophobia, sparked protests that degenerated into right-wing extremist mobs hunting down immigrants in the streets.
Images of the protests, including of protestors making the illegal Hitler salute, “were really quite shocking,” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein told reporters in Geneva.
He said it was easy to feel “dispirited” at the rise across Europe of “extreme-right political parties with seemingly complete amnesia” for what sparked the two world wars that began on the continent.
“We cannot simply concealed from our memories the traumas of the past, because it’s frightening to see how the same devices are being used again,” he insisted.
Zeid, who is set to step down from his position as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the end of the week, stressed that the UN could not be the sole voice speaking out against the dangerous development.
“I think it’s fundamentally important that public officials throughout Europe denounce all of this,” he said.
“We really need a concentration of voices now to say that when we have incitement to hatred, this is prohibited under international human rights law.”
‘Undercurrent of prejudice’
After the fatal stabbing of a German man, 35, allegedly by a Syrian and an Iraqi, thousands of protesters marched in the eastern city of Chemnitz for two straight days, some chasing down people they believed were immigrants.
Police reported assaults by extremists against at least three foreigners on Sunday, while investigations were opened in 10 cases of the protesters performing the illegal Hitler salute.
At least 20 people were injured on Monday as pyrotechnics and other objects were hurled by both far-right demonstrators as well as anti-fascist counter-protesters in the city.
Zeid said Wednesday the focus on the immigrant origins of the alleged perpetrators of the initial stabbing was “disturbing”.
While stressing that the perpetrators obviously needed to be punished, he pointed out that in many European countries, “the equivalent crime committed by a non-immigrant may get some coverage but not nearly the same coverage as an immigrant would receive.”
“There is an undercurrent of prejudice that works its way into those media that are somehow connected to the extreme right wing,” he warned.
Such coverage, he said, play “into the natural prejudices and bigotry that exist within every society around the world.”
“But it’s particularly I think worrisome to see it in Europe because of the enormous traumas that Europe itself witnessed during the 20th century.”

A strategy memo compiled by George Soros-funded activist groups as President Trump was being inaugurated last year foretold and seemed to lay the groundwork for many of the political difficulties Trump now faces and the politics-related strife now roiling the nation.
The memo takes on a heightened importance as the politically-driven censorship of conservatives by the gigantic, unregulated social media corporations controlled by the Left is moving into high gear while the crucial midterm congressional elections of Nov. 6 approach.
The intensely anti-conservative animus in the memo may have inspired MasterCard and WorldPay’s attempt on Aug. 21 to strangle the fundraising efforts of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, publisher of FrontPage, by refusing to complete its financial transactions. On that day MasterCard informed the Freedom Center that it would no longer process its transactions because it had been labeled a “hate group” by the radical leftist groups known as the Southern Poverty Law Center and ColorOfChange.org. The Freedom Center stood falsely accused of being “hateful in nature” and “advocating for violence.”
Only a massive outcry by conservative groups and prominent conservatives like Rush Limbaugh forced MasterCard to back down days later and restore the Freedom Center’s online fundraising facilities. But other conservative websites haven’t been so lucky. Many have been shut down or seen their traffic slashed as leftists have manipulated algorithms and limited the reach of conservative content.

2017 was a banner year for acid attacks in Britain.
465 of them occurred in London. Most of the acid attacks are taking place in East London. The borough of Newham tops the acid attacks chart with 85 last year. What’s so special about Newham?
Nothing the media will tell you.
Newham has the second highest Muslim percentage population and the lowest native British population in London. Tower Hamlets, which has the highest Muslim population percentage, has the second highest rate of acid attacks.
None of the two dozen media explainers pretending to explain why London became the world’s acid attack capital have bothered citing that simple statistic. Instead there’s lots of mumbling about poverty, gang violence and the need for household cleaner control. To add on to the failed knife control policy.
The UK boasts the highest number of recorded acid attacks in the world. It narrowly beats out Bangladesh for the honor only because it has more transparent crime statistics and because a sizable percentage of the population of that Muslim country has relocated to the cozy boroughs of London.

Justice for Victims of Yezidi Genocide?

About four years ago, in August 2014, ISIS began slaughtering the Yezidis in Iraq and committed a genocide against this ancient community, massacring over 5,000, abducting 7,450 women and girls who were then sold into sexual slavery and driving over 500,000 out of their ancestral homes. Although the Yezidi genocide has received widespread international recognition due to the indisputable evidence that has been presented including the existence of mass graves, witness testimonies and ISIS publications online inciting against Yezidis and documenting massacres of them, four years on, the Yezidis have not yet received justice for the horrific atrocities that were committed against them. The question remains, why is this the case and when will there be justice for the Yezidi people?
In Iraq and Syria, where the crimes of the Yezidi genocide were perpetrated, it is unlikely that the Yezidi victims will get justice. In Syria, rebels allied with Turkey have destroyed Yezidi holy sites and forcefully converted Yezidis in Afrin to Islam. There are also reports of Yezidis being forced to wear the hijab in these areas. So far, Turkey’s allies have been able to act against the Yezidis in Afrin with impunity, without any interference from the outside world.
Unfortunately, the Syrian regime is part of the problem rather than the solution when it comes to putting an end to radical Islamism within Syria. They are an ally of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, who systematically oppresses women and minorities both within their own country and in countries that fall under their influence due to the creation of a radical Shia Crescent from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, according to local sources within Syria, while the Kurdish authorities that liberated areas from the yoke of ISIS are attempting to promote women’s rights in those areas today, the Syrian regime has not followed suite in the areas that they control, doing virtually nothing to advance the status of women and minorities within the country. If anything, the plight of women and minorities under Assad’s control is one step above the plight of women and minorities under the control of ISIS and other radical Islamist groups. This works to worsen the plight of Yezidis in Syria.

The impeachment delusion: Democrats dreaming about impeachment would have no clue what hit them
It’s actually surreal to think how easily the media can dupe people into thinking that President Trump is going to be impeached and possibly removed from office.
For the last five-and-a-half years of the Bush administration, the Democratic Party howled that Bush “lied us to war to enrich his friends.” In the history of democracy, this is probably the most egregious charge ever leveled against a democratic leader.

Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini is under formal investigation for “kidnapping” after he refused to allow illegal migrants to disembark from a ship at a Sicilian port. The investigation, a political move aimed at blunting the government’s hardline stance on illegal immigration, has threatened to plunge Italy into a constitutional crisis over the separation of powers.
