  1. Controversial and outspoken academic Dr. Jordan Peterson will speak at Calgary’s Arts Commons this week, despite a petition calling for the event to be cancelled.

    A clinical psychologist and University of Toronto professor, Peterson made headlines in 2016 when he voiced opposition to Bill C-16, which added gender identity or expression to the Canadian Human Rights Act. The bill also added hate crimes provisions under the Criminal Code.

    Peterson used YouTube to spread his views and said he would only call students “he” and “she” — not “they” as some people in the transgender community prefer to be known.

    “I can envision a student or a college insisting I call them using gender-neutral pronouns . . . I’m not doing that,” Peterson said in the YouTube video. “I think it’s manipulative. And I don’t recognize another person’s right to determine what pronouns I use to address them. I won’t do it.

    “Now, again, I think that because of these new laws that my decision might be illegal and maybe it’s even a decision of hate. I’m not doing it,” he said, calling the use of gender-neutral pronouns “politically motivated.”

    Peterson is scheduled to speak Friday at the Arts Commons’ Jack Singer Concert Hall, but an online petition calling for the performance to be cancelled has received hundreds of signatures.

    An open letter addressed to the Arts Commons board of directors calls Peterson’s comments “toxic and often violent” and says his “ideas are misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic and racist.”

    “We are deeply disappointed that Arts Commons has made the unconscionable decision to support Peterson’s values by virtue of hosting this talk, as many of the arts organizations and artists working within your venue would readily balk at being associated with such ideas,” the letter states.

  2. Portland protest leader Micah Rhodes is back in jail on allegations that he violated terms of his probation by having contact with minors.

    Rhodes, 24, was ordered to stay away from anyone under 18 years old after he was convicted this year on three counts of second-degree sexual abuse for having illicit sexual contact with a 17-year-old girl in Washington County and a 17-year-old boy in Multnomah County. The sexual abuse occurred in 2014 and 2015, and Rhodes was 20 and 21 years old at the time.

    Washington County Circuit Judge Janelle Wipper and Multnomah County Circuit Judge Jerry Hodson decided in separate hearings not to sentence Rhodes to two to 2 ½ -years in prison, as state sentencing guidelines recommended. Instead, the judges ordered five years of probation for Rhodes with a long list of conditions, including that he was forbidden from being around children without the prior permission of his probation officer.

  5. I’d hated guns since I was a teenager. It was a gun that killed John Lennon, after all. Guns killed President John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King.

    Get rid of the guns, problem solved — or so I thought. In December of 2012, I even tweeted President Barack Obama, urging him to repeal the Second Amendment and “stop” the National Rifle Association. (Never mind that a president can’t do either by himself.)

  6. The number of known radical Islamic Salafists has exceeded the 10,000 mark, according to a new report by the German domestic intelligence agency
    The report by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), which was released this week, shows that the number of radical Islamists now totals 10,800, up from 9,700 the year before and shows a more than doubling of the number from five years ago, Die Welt reports.

    The newspaper has also claimed that the number of radical Islamists coincides with an increase in the number of criminal cases in which a radical Islamic motive or background was suspected.

    The BfV noted that Germany is still in the crosshairs for radical Islamic terrorism and that the situation is still very serious. The agency said that they have identified around 1,880 individuals in Germany who they believe may have the potential to carry out a terrorist attack and more worryingly, that the number was continuing to rise.

  8. Pakistan has been hit by violence on the day of its general elections – with at least 31 dead in the worst attack.

    A man blew himself up outside a polling station in Quetta, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

    Preliminary, unofficial results suggest ex-cricket star Imran Khan’s PTI party is in the lead as votes are counted.

    However, the rival party of disgraced former PM Nawaz Sharif, PML-N, has rejected the results amid allegations of vote rigging.

    The campaign has been overshadowed by concerns of fraud and violence, and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan says there have been “blatant” attempts to manipulate the polls.

    There have also been delays in releasing the results. Baber Yaqoob, the secretary of the Electoral Commission, said this was due to technical errors, adding: “There’s no conspiracy.”

    “The delay is being caused because the result transmission system has collapsed,” Mr Yaqoob said.

The Middle East Forum has discovered that the Obama administration approved a grant of $200,000 of taxpayer money to an al-Qaeda affiliate in Sudan — a decade after the U.S. Treasury designated it as a terrorist-financing organization. More stunningly, government officials specifically authorized the release of at least $115,000 of this grant even after learning that it was a designated terror organization.

    The story began in October 2004, when the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated the Khartoum-based Islamic Relief Agency (ISRA), also known as the Islamic African Relief Agency (IARA), as a terror-financing organization. It did so because of ISRA’s links to Osama bin Laden and his organization Maktab al-Khidamat (MK), the precursor of al-Qaeda.

    According to the U.S. Treasury, in 1997 ISRA established formal cooperation with MK. By 2000, ISRA had raised $5 million for bin Laden’s group. The Treasury Department notes that ISRA officials even sought to help “relocate [bin Laden] to secure safe harbor for him.” It further reports that ISRA raised funds in 2003 in Western Europe specifically earmarked for Hamas suicide bombings.

    The 2004 designation included all of ISRA’s branches, including a U.S. office called the Islamic American Relief Agency (IARA-USA). Eventually it became known that this American branch had illegally transferred over $1.2 million to Iraqi insurgents and other terror groups, including, reportedly, the Afghan terrorist Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. In 2010, the executive director of IARA-USA and a board member pled guilty to money-laundering, theft of public funds, conspiracy, and several other charges.

    ISRA’s influence also spread to Washington. Former U.S. congressman Mark Siljander (R., Mich.) pled guilty in 2010 to obstruction of justice and acting as an unregistered foreign agent after prosecutors found that IARA-USA had paid him $75,000 — using misappropriated USAID grant money — to lobby the government, in an attempt to remove the charity from the government’s terror list.

  12. MEDAN, Indonesia: An Indonesian Christian has been sentenced to four years in prison for a Facebook post that likened the prophet Muhammad to a pig in the latest conviction under a controversial hate-speech law.
    Dozens of Islamic hardliners cheered and shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great) as the court in Sumatra ruled that Martinus Gulo was hostile toward Muslims in his post, which also said Mohammed sanctioned bestiality.
    The Medan District court on Tuesday ordered the 21-year-old university student to pay a fine of one billion rupiah ($70,000) or spend an additional six months in jail.
    “Finding the defendant guilty of misusing information by offending believers through his Facebook account, I sentence him to four years,” said presiding judge Saidin Bagariang.

  14. The Igando Customary Court on Tuesday dissolved a 21-year-old marriage between one Rachael Olayiwola and Rabiu Olayiwola.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rabiu, 48, an Islamic cleric, had approached the court to terminate his marriage to Rachael, who had turned a prophetess.

    Olayiwola had told the court that prior to their marriage, Rachael had agreed to abandon her Christian religion for Islamic faith.

    “But three years ago, she now told me that God has asked her to return to her former religion and become a prophetess.

    “I cannot accept that under my roof; it is either she comes back to my faith or I send her packing through dissolution of the marriage.

    “The annoying thing is that she does not go to her church alone but takes the children along.

    “Now the Central Mosque Association Committee vowed to remove me as an Imam if my wife refused to return as a Muslim,” Rabiu said.

  16. A 54-year-old man caught after a Tube driver him carrying a bag of ‘Jihad leaflets’ has been jailed.

    Khalid Baqa used a printing and copying shop in east London to make copies of jihad-related flyers he later distributed.

    Police traced him by looking at CCTV footage which showed him leaving the Royal London Hospital with the bag before getting on the Tube.

    CDs, identical to others found at Baqa’s home, containing hate and terrorist-related speeches were also discovered in the chapel of the hospital, police said.

    He pleaded guilty to five counts of dissemination of terrorist publications and was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday to four years and eight months in jail.

  18. The counter-terror watchdog chief who has previously said returning jihadist terrorists should not be arrested is to become the UK’s new Director of Public Prosecutions.
    Max Hill QC will head up the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), overseeing hundreds of thousands of cases a year, and replaces Alison Saunders, whose contract was not renewed after a string of scandals blamed on her “politically correct” approach.

    Mr Hill has clashed with the government on tackling extremism and went on record to say it is “fundamentally wrong to attach the word ‘terrorism’ to any of the world religions”, and has previously set up meetings with Islamist apologist groups.

    He has worked as the independent reviewer of terrorism laws since 2017 and will be paid £204,000 a year in his new job at the CPS.

    In October 2017, Hill suggested that returning jihadis need to be reintegrated as they were “brainwashed” and “simply naïve”, saying: “We are told we do have a significant number already back in this country who have previously gone to Iraq and Syria.

    “That means that the authorities have looked at them and looked at them hard and have decided that they do not justify prosecution and really we should be looking at reintegration and moving away from any notion that we are going to lose a generation from this travel.”

Yet the international media remains mute in the face of the PA’s flouting of the right to freedom of expression. Why?   23. A statue of a girl reading a book has been removed from its public space in Turkey’s northwestern province of Bursa after it was vandalized along with other public art pieces several times by unidentified perpetrators, daily Hürriyet reported on July 23.

    The statue, which was attacked twice, is one of the three statues that were made in the municipality’s sculpture atelier and were placed in Bursa’s public spaces to add beauty to urban life.

    However, it was not the only target for the vandals.

  25. Good thing I got back from vacation in time for the really important news, the story Drudge, Breitbart, WaPo and NYT are all on the same page about this morning — or, at least, are all putting forth the same Page One about. The Michael Cohen tape. Big Story. Stop the whatever they’re called.

    I have a question. It’s the same question I had last week about Trump and Putin in Helsinki. This question is one of the most important ones to ask about any such “news” blasted out by the news media, those special operators of the psychological battlefield, which they drive into every particle of collective American brain with exploding headlines and siren soundbytes. The Michael Cohen tape is the single most important thing for all of us to think about right now …. compared to what?

    Compared to nothing, which is the media m.o. Last month is was all Stormy Daniels, all the time. (Who?) Last week, it was “treason!” “impeachable offenses!!” “crimes!!!” committed by Trump at his press conference with Putin in Helsinki. Compared to what?

    I don’t ask the question lightly. The truly brilliant anti-communist writer Josef Mackiewicz was a biologist by training. (By the way, so is Bukovsky.) “One of my professors,” he wrote in his 1962 book, The Triumph of Provocation, reissued by Yale University Press in 2009, “used to say that only a comparitive science is an exact science; only by comparisons can objective knowledge be gained. All my life I have tried to use this maxim as a guide, since it seems to me to be the only correct method in the assessment of all the truth that is accessible to man.”

    We postmoderns feed on a poor diet of “all the news that’s fit to print.” Imagine, instead, assessing all the truth that is accessible to man.

    This begins, pace Mackeiwicz, with comparisons.

    So, let’s compare Trump and Putin in Helsinki in 2018 with Roosevelt and Stalin in Yalta in 1945. If it’s “treason” that took place in that Helsinki press conference (non-sense), then there exists no comparitive term in our language to convey the scale and depth of FDR’s betrayal at Yalta, both in terms of Allied losses and civilizational wreckage during the war itself, and the multi-millions of people soon to be consigned to communist slavery and murder in Europe and China. Directly linked US wars in Korea and Vietnam followed, setting a course of disaster that leads straight to today’s nuclearized North Korea.

    “The number of police firearms operations in England and Wales increased by 19 percent in the financial year ending March 2018 and amounted to over 18,000 cases, which is the highest number of operations since 2011, the UK Home Office said on Thursday.

    “In the year ending March 2018, there were 18,746 police firearms operations in England and Wales. This is an increase of 2,937 (19%) police firearms operations compared to the previous year, and is the highest number of operations since the year ending March 2011,” the statistical bulletin, published by the UK government press service, read.

    About 27 percent of all police firearms operations across England and Wales took place in London, while the North East accounted for the smallest proportion, with 2 percent of operation happening there, the Home Office said.

    The data also demonstrated that the number of armed officers is on the rise. There were 6,459 armed officers at the end of March, which is a 3-percent increase, compared with the previous year. This is the second consecutive year which witnesses growth of armed police personnel, the statistics showed.

    The data was gathered from the 43 Home Office police forces in England and Wales from April 2017 to March 2018.

    UK police officers do not carry firearms on a daily basis.     The French police have had to seal off a shopping center in Sarcelles, a suburb north of Paris, while chasing the infamous Redoine Faid, whom accomplices broke out of prison in the southeastern suburbs of Paris in a hijacked helicopter on July 1.

    Faid, one of France’s most wanted men, left a car with explosives and fake license plates in the underground parking there and escaped police via staircase along with his accomplice.

    A police source, cited by the French news agency AFP, said “They escaped by a hair’s breadth. It happened in a matter of seconds.”

    The police followed the convicted repeat offender to Sarcelles after two men, one of whom was later identified as Faid, had been spotted during a random check on a suspicious car at a gas station in one of Paris’ northern suburbs and had rushed away as officers tried to approach them. AFP’s source said that a “major” search operation was underway on July 25.

    Just a couple days beforehand, one of Faid’s accomplices from the bank robbery, which he was serving a 25-year sentence for, was accidentally caught at a routine road check, also north of Paris.

    Redoine Faid was behind a 2010 armed robbery in which a policewoman was killed. He had been serving a 25-year-sentence in jail since 2011. He’d already made headlines with another movie-like prison break in 2013, when he took wardens hostage and escaped in a car, but was arrested a month later…”

    The news agency said that Zavbi had fought in Syria and that upon his return to Europe he helped recruit new fighters and gave them information about training camps.

    Italian media have previously reported that he was one of three suspects convicted in a Venice court for recruiting terrorists, and that the group was linked to Bosnia’s top recruiter, Bilal Bosnic, who is serving a seven-year jail sentence in Sarajevo.”

    The tech-heavy Nasdaq was set for a big down day Thursday after disappointing quarterly results from Facebook sent the social media giant hurtling toward its biggest share price decline ever and on track to lose more than $100 billion in market value.

    The Invesco QQQ Trust, which tracks the Nasdaq 100 index and can give traders a good idea of how the Nasdaq stocks will trade, was down more than 2 percent at one point in after-hours trading Wednesday. At last count, the ETF was off by about 1.5 percent. Facebook lost about a fifth of its value after hours.

    Nasdaq 100 futures were off by 0.8 percent.

    Facebook’s “FANG” brethren were also lower. Amazon, which reports earnings after the bell Thursday, lost 1.5 percent.     Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ YouTube channel received a strike on Tuesday for violating the site’s community guidelines, The Verge has learned. YouTube removed four videos from Jones’ channel, which has 2.4 million subscribers, that contained instances of hate speech and child endangerment, sources familiar with the matter said. YouTube channels are deleted if they get three strikes in a three-month period.

    Two videos contained hate speech against Muslims, and a third contained hate speech against transgender people, sources said. A fourth showed a child who was pushed to the ground by an adult man, under the headline “How to prevent liberalism.” All four of the videos are currently posted on Infowars.

    The offending videos do not include Jones’ threatening rant about Robert Mueller, which stirred a controversy earlier this week after it was posted on Facebook. That video does not appear to have been uploaded to YouTube.

It’s a shift that diminishes their reach on the platform — and it’s the same one being deployed against prominent racists to limit their visibility.
