LA authorities recorded privileged attorney-client conversations, district attorney says
LOS ANGELES — After Los Angeles County’s public defender expressed concerns about possibly illegal recordings of privileged attorney-client meetings at a downtown courthouse, a spokeswoman for the district attorney has acknowledged that such recordings had “inadvertently” occurred in one case.
The spokeswoman, Shiara Davila-Morales, said Friday that recordings had been made of conversations between a defense attorney and a client in a case involving three individuals accused of kidnapping and extortion.
Davila-Morales said the district attorney’s office has not listened to the recordings and has no intention of using them in the prosecution of the case.
The statement from the district attorney’s office in response to inquiries from The Los Angeles Times came after Interim Public Defender Nicole Davis Tinkham sent a confidential memo to the county Board of Supervisors Wednesday.
The memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Times, said the public defender’s office had begun an investigation into a recording operation by sheriff’s and police officials of attorney-client conversations at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Misleading: FISA application structured to emphasize Steele as ‘intel’ source

A heavily redacted but still somewhat informative copy of the FISA application documents on Carter Page was released on Saturday, and as numerous outlets are reporting, it shows that the Steele dossier was the major component of the justification.
A close reading of the files reveals how subtle clues were incorporated in the initial application to increase the appearance that Christopher Steele’s work product was something we have reason to believe it really wasn’t.
We know today that Steele’s information was compiled in response to a commission from the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, to do opposition research for the purpose of hanging dirt on Donald Trump.
The FISA application makes it clear that that was not the picture of Steele’s information presented to the FISA court.
Even though we’re dealing with a heavily redacted version, it isn’t possible to credibly suggest that the unredacted version would show something different. The redacted version conveys key things that could not be contradicted in the blanked-out passages, and still leave the application looking honest and coherent to a judge. The redacted material cannot contain information that would change the meaning of the unredacted assertions.

When the White House orders federal agencies to comply with a Supreme Court decision, that’s not a sign of dictatorship looming, but rather, a vindication of the rule of law. But left-leaning lawyers, bloggers, and officials are claiming otherwise. They are sounding the alarm over the Trump administration’s compliance with the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Lucia v. Securities and Exchange Commission.
That 7-to-2 decision was issued on June 21. It ruled that the Constitution’s Appointments Clause, which requires that federal officers be appointed by “Heads of Departments” or the President, means what it says — and that administrative law judges (ALJs), as “officers of the United States,” must be appointed either by the head of their agency (such as a cabinet secretary) or the President — not by other bureaucrats. The decision was authored by Justice Elena Kagan, a Democratic appointee, and was joined in by all of the Court’s GOP appointees, while the Court’s Democratic appointees were evenly split, with two in the majority, and two in dissent. It was not a right-wing ruling, and every knowledgeable lawyer expected it. It resolved a split among the lower courts, in favor of the majority view on the subject: the judges of the Tenth Circuit had ruled by a lopsided margin that administrative law judges must be appointed by an agency head, not other bureaucrats, while the judges of the D.C. Circuit had evenly divided on the question, with some arguing that administrative law judges have so little power that they constitute mere “employees” rather than “officers.”

“Page a établi des relations avec des responsables du gouvernement russe, y compris des agents du renseignement”, ajoute-t-il. “Le FBI pense que Page a collaboré et conspiré avec le gouvernement russe”, est-il ensuite précisé.
Mais la surveillance de Carter Page est en fait l’objet, depuis plusieurs mois, d’une bataille entre républicains et démocrates.
En février, Donald Trump avait déclassifié une note confidentielle de parlementaires républicains décrivant des abus de pouvoir de la part du FBI et du ministère de la Justice afin d’obtenir un mandat judiciaire pour surveiller Carter Page.
Selon ce mémo, qui dénonce un partis pris anti-Trump, les deux institutions s’appuyaient sur des informations collectées par Christopher Steele, un ex-espion britannique, dans le cadre d’une mission financée par le Parti démocrate et l’équipe de campagne de Hillary Clinton.
Cette note de quatre pages s’appuyait sur le document désormais révélé au grand public.
Après avoir été bloqué par la Maison Blanche, un contre-mémo démocrate avait ensuite été déclassifié, bien que largement caviardé. Il rejetait les accusations d’abus de pouvoir.
Dans une salve de tweets dimanche matin, Donald Trump s’est réjoui de la publication de ces documents, estimant qu’ils confirmaient “avec peu de doute que le ministère de la +Justice+ et le FBI avaient trompé la cour”.

Carter Page n’a pas été inculpé à ce stade. Il s’est vivement défendu dimanche sur la chaîne CNN: “Non, je n’ai jamais été un agent d’un pouvoir étranger”.

CHICAGO (CBS) — A new study names Chicago the rat capital of the U.S.
According to a study by the apartment search service “Rent Hop,” the city received 50,963 rat complaints last year – more than any other city in the country.
New York came in a distant second place, followed by Washington, D.C., and Boston.
The study also found the number of rat complaints jumped 55% since 2014.
Logan Square, Englewood, and West Ridge topped the list for most rat complaints called in to 3-1-1.
The study claims “when comparing the number of complaints per 100,000 residents, Chicago topped the list with 1876.09 complaints per 100,000 residents.”
Most of the neighborhoods with a higher concentration of rat complaints coincide with the neighborhoods with a higher concentration of dog poop.

Christian Carnage and Attacked Churches in Egypt
As a reflection of the enmity that Christmas provokes in the Islamic world, “Egypt’s interior ministry… said it would be allocating 230,000 security personnel to secure the country’s Christmas celebrations,” the Egyptian newspaper al-Ahram reported, “to protect 2,626 churches nationwide during the celebrations.” Security measures were further “updated to ensure the safety of CCTV and metal detectors systems at all churches across the country.”
Despite these precautions, Muslim assailants managed to slaughter Christians and terrorize churches:
On December 9 in Cairo, two Islamic terror attacks claimed a total of eight Christian lives and wounded several others.
In the first attack, Muslim militants raided a Christian-owned appliance store and killed two Christian brothers.
A little later, and in the same area, two armed terrorists opened fire on the Mar Mina Coptic Orthodox Church as its members were leaving the service. The death toll might have been significantly higher had church security not been present. At least six worshippers were killed (earlier and conflicting accounts said as many as 12); one security officer was also killed in the shooting. One of the perpetrators was wearing an explosives belt and had a machine gun with 150 rounds, suggesting that the terrorists had plans for a more spectacular suicide attack that would have claimed many more lives.

Greece starts bailing out Germany on refugees
Greece will process 1,500 asylum applications from Germany as part of a deal signed between the two countries, Greece’s migration minister said yesterday (18 July).
“In the first half of 2018 there were 1,500 requests for processing by Germany, and they will be accepted,” Dimitris Vitsas told reporters.
Berlin and Athens signed a deal at a recent EU migrant summit aimed at stemming arrivals to Germany and Austria — with some asylum seekers likely to be returned to the first EU country they reached, often southern Mediterranean states such as Greece and Spain.
Vitsas said the deal sought “to find a uniquely European solution to regulate the migrant influx and limit unilateral actions.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has marketed the Greek accord and another with Spain as a way to placate hardline rebels within her government.
In return for processing the asylum applications of migrants who reached Germany, Berlin has promised to accept 2,900 migrants from Greece for family reunification, Vitsas said.
The minister said that arrivals from Turkey had fallen by 96% since their peak in the summer of 2015, but Greece is still struggling to look after some 60,000 migrants already on its territory.
He said Greece was dealing with “problems with integration and housing” for migrants, especially in overcrowded camps on the Dodecanese islands, just a short boat ride from Turkey.
The International Organization for Migration says more than 50,000 migrants and asylum seekers have reached Europe by boat since the start of 2018, with more than 1,400 dying en route.
Seeking EU help
“Frontline countries must get financial support… In Greece, we are particularly interested in our five islands being financially supported”, Vitsas said.
Vitsas said Athens also wanted more staff from EU asylum agency EASO and more interpreters, saying 38 languages and dialects were being spoken at the Moria camp on Lesbos, the main island gateway for nearly a million people in 2015.
Greece passed a bill in May aimed at easing the overcrowding and making asylum procedures simpler. Vitsas said that, of 30,000 asylum requests made in the first half of this year, 70% had been dealt with.
He said processing would be speeded up further and the capacity of mainland refugees centres would be boosted by 4,000. Another 5,000 places would be found at a later stage for people granted asylum, he said.
While the vast majority of migrants seeking to reach Europe from Africa and the Middle East are now crossing further to the west, the eastern Mediterranean route remains in use.
A boat carrying 150 migrants sank off the coast of northern Cyprus on Wednesday, killing 19 people, and rescuers were searching for 25 others, Turkey’s coast guard said.

I have some good news for our supporters today: As I said in my last video, I am going to sue the Probation Service!
What I have been subjected to over the last week is an outrage.
After horrific levels of harassment that involved ‘SO15 Counter Terrorism Command’, raids on my home address and much more, the judge threw out the Probation Service prosecution.
That was a good result and a great victory against the politically-motivated establishment and their lackeys.
But now, with such a strong case for damages and harassment, I am determined to drag these bastards into court and make them pay dearly for persecuting me!
These are the incontrovertible facts of the case:
– I provided 5 days notice to my Probation Officer that I was travelling to Northern Ireland but in the court papers he claimed that I hadn’t provided him with any notice;
– I provided the full address of the hotel I was staying in for my trip to Northern Ireland as I am required to do 5 days before departure;
– I specifically stated I was going to see my solicitors and the Equalities Commission and provided evidence to confirm these appointments;
– Probation then assumed I was going to cause havoc and disrupt ‘community safety’ on the 12th July celebrations;
– Two days before departure, I re-forwarded the details of my trip to my Probation Officer;
– My Probation Officer refused my calls for a full week leaving me unable to provide him with any evidence that he was making a big mistake;
– I was harassed over the phone over five times by officers from the Metropolitan Police and SO15 Counter Terrorism Command;
– The Probation Service did not send me any formal warning as they are required to do so by their own guidelines before taking the matter to court;
– The Probation Service asked SO15 Counter Terrorism Command to pull officers away from catching terrorists and forced them to escort me to court;
– I surrendered myself twice to police stations to be arrested but was told that, even with a warrant for me outstanding, they would not arrest me;
– The Probation Service prosecutors could not even contact my probation officer to inform him he’s made a huge mistake;
– In the end, I did not even travel to Northern Ireland but stayed at home instead.
Due to all of this, the judge simply threw the case out the window and I walked out of court with a huge smile on my face having wiped the floor with the establishment.
The recommendation of the Probation Service was that I was sent to prison for 14 days!
I want to sue them for this embarrassing debacle for the following reasons:
1. To demonstrate to the establishment that I am not going to be persecuted without an almighty retaliation;
2. To cause them further embarrassment for the way they mishandled this fiasco;
3. To deter them from taking liberties with me in the future.
Tomorrow I am receiving expert legal advice to take this case further.
The last piece of the puzzle is the funding to launch a devastating legal assault on these jobsworth parasites!

Austria: Vienna to abolish Turkish-language driving test
There will no longer be Turkish-language driving license tests in Austria starting from 2019, the country’s Transport Minister Norbert Hofer announced on Saturday.
The minister, who belongs to the far-right Freedom Party, said the move was a cost-cutting measure. However, candidates will still be able to take the test in English, Croatian and Slovene, the latter two languages being protected by a treaty. Turkish is reportedly the second-most popular language used to take the test, after German.
A driving instructor in Vienna, Unal Haci, said almost half of his clients had Turkish roots. And even though many speak fluent German, up to 40 percent take their final test in Turkish.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Mediterranean Sea, one of the most important maritime trade highways in the world, is the marine traffic hub at the western end of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Beijing’s maritime strategic activities in the Mediterranean consist mainly of constructing and operating ports and railways to open up new trade links between China and the Eurasia-Africa zone. However, the implementation of a Chinese Maritime Silk Road via the Mediterranean cannot succeed unless there is a way to bridge the gap between economic interests and the capacity to protect those interests.
The One Belt One Road Initiative (BRI) has two components: the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI), which is intended to link China and Europe via land and sea routes. This initiative – Beijing’s most ambitious integration project to date – lies at the heart of China’s foreign policy. The MSRI is designed to build sea routes with faster connectivity to increase trade along the land- and sea-based Silk Road, linking Asia with Europe and Africa.
Under the strategic framework of the MSRI, China has been buying up the development and operational rights to a chain of ports stretching from the southern regions of Asia to the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and even South America. According to the Financial Times, China has spent billions expanding its port network to secure sea lanes and establish itself as a maritime power.

Steven Davis says he didn’t set out to start a fight, but found one when he began attacking one of the most sacred beliefs of the vegetarian community.
One of the reasons most commonly cited by vegetarians for giving up meat is the conviction that other animals have a right to life as well as humans. But when Davis began setting up a course on animal ethics for the animal science department at Oregon State University four years ago, he reached a rather surprising conclusion.
Nobody’s hands are free from the blood of other animals, not even vegetarians, he concluded. Millions of animals are killed every year, Davis says, to prepare land for growing crops, “like corn, soybean, wheat and barley, the staples of a vegan diet.”

The animals in this case are mice and moles and rabbits and other creatures that are run over by tractors, or lose their habitat to make way for farming, so they are not as “visible” as cattle, he says.

Common sense suggested the mystery boat zipping toward the Newport Beach coastline last month wasn’t being piloted by a fisherman or recreational boaters out for a predawn spin.
It first had been spotted by a U.S. Navy ship 100 miles or so south, off the U.S.-Mexican border; a Coast Guard vessel later updated the coordinates as it moved north. Evidence also suggested this was a “panga,” a simple, rugged and nimble vessel designed decades ago for fishermen, but which in recent years have become popular among smugglers at sea.

Police have released a photo of three men they would like to speak to after a three-year-old boy was seriously injured in a suspected acid attack in a Worcester shop yesterday afternoon (Saturday 21 July).

The incident occurred at around 2.15pm in Home Bargains on Shrub Hill Retail Park, Tallow Hill, Worcester.
The boy was taken to hospital where he is being treated for serious burns to his arm and face.

Chief Superintendent Mark Travis said: “At this time we are treating this as a deliberate attack on a three-year-old boy.
“The incident will rightly shock the local community and I would like to reassure local people that we are carrying out a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.

Jordan takes in Syrian ‘White Helmets’ evacuated with Israeli help

JERUSALEM/AMMAN (Reuters) – Jordan said on Sunday 800 people including members of Syria’s “White Helmets” civil defense group had been evacuated from southwest Syria where Damascus’ forces are advancing against rebels, with Israeli officials saying they facilitated the mission.

The kingdom agreed to a request by Britain, Germany and Canada to give the White Helmet workers temporary asylum in the kingdom before settlement in the West on humanitarian grounds, spokesman Mohammad al Kayed said.
He said the aid workers would remain at a “closed” location and that Britain, Germany and Canada had agreed to resettle them within three months.
