Signs of sophisticated cell-phone spying found near White House, say U.S. officials
A federal study found signs that surveillance devices for intercepting cellphone calls and texts were operating near the White House and other sensitive locations in the Washington area last year.
A Department of Homeland Security program discovered evidence of the surveillance devices, called IMSI catchers, as part of federal testing last year, according to a letter from DHS to Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., on May 22. The letter didn’t specify what entity operated the devices and left open the possibility that there could be alternative explanations for the suspicious cellular signals collected by the federal testing program last year.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – The United States is willing to work with China on a “results- oriented” relationship, but Beijing’s actions in the South China Sea were coercive and the Pentagon would “compete vigorously” if needed, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Saturday.
The comments by Mattis, speaking at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, come at a time of increased tension between the two nations in the South China Sea and highlight how President Donald Trump’s administration is looking to balance China’s cooperation on North Korea while dealing with its activities in the disputed sea.
“China’s policy in the South China Sea stands in stark contrast to the openness that our strategy promotes, it calls into question China’s broader goals,” said Mattis, who said he would be traveling to Beijing this month.
“The U.S. will continue to pursue a constructive, results-oriented relationship with China, cooperation whenever possible will be the name of the game and competing vigorously where we must … of course we recognize any sustainable Indo-Pacific order has a role for China,” he said.

Report: Intel on Papadopoulos was passed to U.S. embassy officials in London

New details are emerging about how information on former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos made its way to the U.S. government back in May 2016, two months before the FBI officially started its investigation of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.
According to Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel, Alexander Downer, the former top Australian diplomat to the U.K., passed information about a conversation he had on May 10, 2016 with Papadopoulos to the U.S. embassy in London.
Downer claimed that Papadopoulos told him during a barroom conversation that Russia had information that was potentially damaging to Hillary Clinton. Downer has said he found the comment “interesting,” and contacted his Australian colleagues. The information also made its way to Elizabeth Dibble, the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in London, according to Strassel. Nathan Larson is an independent candidate in Virginia who admitted to HuffPost that he’s a pedophile who bragged in blog posts about raping his ex-wife and fantasized online about having sex with young children.
Larson is also a convicted felon who wouldn’t be eligible to run for office in Virginia had McAuliffe not restored Larson’s rights to vote and run for office in 2016.
Larson was sentenced to 16 months in prison in October 2009 for threatening to kill the president.

In one of her many counter-rallies since Donald Trump was elected president, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) urged an audience comprised almost exclusively of young blacks to “stay woke.” The imperative sentence was met with thunderous cheers and applause.
That was in April of 2017, and since that time much in the nation has happened. “Auntie Maxine,” who Michelle Malkin branded a “swamp monster,” was caught steering $1.2 billion in taxpayer money to Obama flunkies. Meanwhile, black unemployment fell to its lowest rate in 17 years, in large measure because of Trump’s tax relief package, which for added measure the Democrats threatened to undo and then some if they won back the House in 2018.
The time seemed ripe for Republicans to try to lessen the stranglehold the Democratic Party had had on blacks for decades. The crusade was led by Candace Owens, communications director for Turning Point USA, and indeed black America seems to be turning a corner.

If you haven’t seen the clip of “comedian” Samantha Bee using the c-word to defame Ivanka Trump, you won’t get a chance to. TBS has scrubbed the episode from the web. You won’t even find it listed on the series website, much less a clip of it available for viewing.
Nor will it be returning in reruns. According to The Wrap, a TBS representative has advised that the “episode will not be returning online in either an edited or unedited capacity.”
This is all the network’s way of plugging its fingers in its ears and singing, hoping that those offended will simply go away.
At least that’s phase one. Phase two, which may be in the works, is scuttling the show altogether and giving Bee her walking papers. That this possibility exists is discernible from stories like this one, which reveal that the show has already lost two sponsors. More may be packing their bags as you read these words.

The alternate title to this post is “No normal person could be so prolific and prejudiced.” I don’t know about the “prolific” part, but HuffPost writer Luke O’Brien — the author of the quote — certainly lets his biases shine through in an unfortunate attack on a Twitter user who supports Donald Trump and is concerned about the spread of radical Islam.
The title of O’Brien’s piece, “Trump’s Loudest Anti-Muslim Twitter Troll Is A Shady Vegan Married To An (Ousted) WWE Exec,” is a thumbnail of all the personal information he has dredged up about a Twitter user who uses the handle Amy Mek. According to Mek, O’Brien himself can take credit for the “ousted” part: Her husband, she laments, was fired after the HuffPo hit piece threw shade on her and opinions.
So who is Amy Mek? As O’Brien tells it, she is someone with “200,000 [Twitter] followers, including Sean Hannity, Roseanne Barr[!] and the personal account of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and has earned endorsements from Donald Trump and Michael Flynn.” Since O’Brien himself has only 4,360 followers, those who put stock in Twitter numbers would have to concede that Mek is more than 40 times as popular.

Italy’s new populist leaders commemorated the founding of the Italian republic by attending a pomp-filled military parade Saturday — and then promised to get to work creating jobs and expelling migrants.
“The free ride is over,” League leader Matteo Salvini, Italy’s new interior minister, warned migrants at a rally in northern Italy. “It’s time to pack your bags.”
The pledge of mass deportations to come was a reminder that Italy has a staunchly anti-immigrant, right-wing party in its governing coalition — and that the European Union will face a whole new partner governing its fourth-largest economy.
Earlier, Salvini joined Premier Giuseppe Conte and the rest of the newly sworn-in Cabinet to view the Republic Day parade. Italy’s aeronautic acrobatic squad flew low and loud over downtown Rome trailing smoke in the red, white and green of the Italian flag.
The national pride on display is a feature of every Republic Day, but it took on a particular significance this year after Italy on Friday ended three months of political and financial turmoil and swore in a government whose populist and euroskeptic leanings have alarmed Europe.
Transcending tensions
Conte, a law professor plucked from relative obscurity to head an unlikely governing alliance of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and League, said the celebrations Saturday transcended all the tensions of recent days.
“It’s the celebration for all of us, of our republic,” he said.
Conte’s Cabinet was sworn in after a last-minute deal averted the threat of a new election that could have turned into a referendum on whether Italy stayed with the shared European euro currency. The political stability relieved financial markets on Friday but Italy’s European neighbors continued to express concerns about the euroskeptic bent and the heavy spending agenda of Italy’s new government.
“Italy is destroying itself — and dragging down Europe with it,” read the headline of Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, the cover of which featured a forkful of spaghetti with one dangling strand tied up as a noose.
While Spiegel is known for such provocations, another Spiegel article last week drew an official protest from Italy’s ambassador to Germany.
On Saturday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel phoned Conte and invited him to visit soon. Merkel’s office said both leaders emphasized the importance of continued close bilateral cooperation.
Conte has so far left policy specifics to the drivers of his improbable rise, his two deputies: Salvini and 5-Star leader Luigi Di Maio.
Di Maio, the new economic development minister, reported for work after the parade to his ministry, which would have otherwise been closed for the holiday.
Work to create work
“Starting today, we get to work to create work,” Di Maio said in a Facebook video giving Italians a tour of the empty ministry. Di Maio is also the minister for labor, a combination he said made sense since the two ministries must work together.
Offering the new government cautious support was Italy’s small, far-right neo-fascist CasaPound party, which held its own Republic Day commemoration on Saturday. Banners featured images of a crossed-out EU flag and “#exIT” written underneath, a reference to calls for Italy to leave the 28-nation bloc.
The 5-Star-League agenda has no such plans, but Conte made clear he was irked by comments this week by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who said Italy had to stop blaming the EU for its problems and must take responsibility to address the poverty in southern Italy.
“That means more work, less corruption. Seriousness,” Juncker said in comments his spokeswoman later said he regretted.
In an unscripted blast from the parade route, Conte insisted Italy wasn’t alone in facing cases of corruption and declared that “we all have to work for legality.”
Conte’s government faces mandatory confidence votes next week in parliament, where the two governing parties have a slim majority.

From their earliest protests the EDL’s members sought to highlight issues including sharia law, Islam’s attitudes toward minorities, and the phenomenon that would become euphemistically known as “grooming gangs.” In reality these protests often descended into hooliganism and low-level violence (naturally helped along by self-described “anti-fascists”). The authorities did everything they could to stop the EDL, and the media did everything possible to demonize them. In a foretaste of things to come, very few people made any effort to understand them. And nobody paid any price for (indeed many people benefited from) claiming that the EDL was simply a fascist organization and that anybody who even tried to understand them must be a fascist too. The usual prohibition against sweeping generalizations doesn’t seem to apply if the generalization tilts in that direction.

Let’s look at what they are erasing. The summer of 1934 had ten massive heat waves east of the Rockies. Minnesota had a record cold spring this year, but in 1934 Minnesota was an extremely hot place – with many days over 100 degrees. Milan, Minnesota reached 113 degrees in 1934, compared to a maximum of 96 degrees last year.

For years my organization, Citizens United, battled the Obama State Department over dozens of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and lawsuits. It became common knowledge that if you wanted to get information out of the State Department in a timely manner, you had to go to court.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, it was Citizens United and Judicial Watch that pried open Foggy Bottom to expose Hillary Clinton’s emails and pay to play scandals at the Clinton Foundation.
Fast forward to today and we are still being forced to litigate with the “Deep State” Department. Unbeknownst to President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the State Department continues to stonewall our investigations by slow-walking the production of vital documents that might be detrimental to the left’s fake narrative of so-called Russian collusion with the Trump presidential campaign.

“Nine people were injured after a van carrying 29 illegal migrants from Afghanistan and Iraq attempted to ram a police checkpoint on the border between Bosnia and Croatia.
The driver, thought to be Bosnian, had been discovered ferrying the migrants across the border from his own country, which is outside the European Union, into Croatia, which joined the bloc in 2013.
Croatian police set up a roadblock to stop the vehicle near the south-eastern town of Zadar, but the migrants decide they would attempt to ram through it rather than surrender, forcing officers to open fire, Business Insider reports.
“The driver did not stop after several warnings. He finally passed through a roadblock and drove towards the police. The police reaction was justified. They were forced to open fire because their lives were in danger,” said Zadar police chief Ranko Drazina.
