Romania and Lithuania knowingly hosted secret CIA jails, European court rules
VILNIUS (Reuters) – Lithuania and Romania hosted secret CIA prisons a decade ago and their authorities were aware that detainees were held there illegally, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on Thursday.
Washington’s so-called rendition program is still shrouded in secrecy, around a decade after it ended. Washington has acknowledged it held al Qaeda suspects in jails outside U.S. jurisdiction, but it has not provided a full list of locations.
The ECHR ruled four years ago that the CIA ran a secret jail in Poland. It has since been holding hearings about similar sites in Romania and Lithuania, neither of which has publicly acknowledged letting the U.S. agency hold prisoners on its soil.
The Strasburg-based court said Lithuania hosted a CIA jail between February 2005 and March 2006 and Romania between September 2003 and November 2005. Both contravened the European Human Rights Convention which prohibits torture, illegal detention and the death penalty.

The US captured Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri after the September 2001 attacks in the US and they are now at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.
The CIA operated secret prisons, including in Lithuania and Romania.
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) said both countries had violated the European prohibition of torture.
The ECHR issued a similar ruling against Poland in 2014.
Lithuania and Romania were ordered to pay €100,000 (£88,000; $117,000) in damages each to Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Nashiri, respectively. The ECHR was unable to visit the suspects at Guantanamo.
The existence of the so-called CIA “black sites” for interrogation – under the so-called “secret rendition” policy – was kept secret for many years after 9/11.
Abu Zubaydah, a stateless Palestinian born in Saudi Arabia, is thought to have been al-Qaeda’s chief recruiter in the 1990s, and later became a key organiser, linking Osama Bin Laden to other al-Qaeda cells.
Saudi-born Abd al-Nashiri led al-Qaeda’s operations in the Gulf region, according to US intelligence. He allegedly masterminded the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000, which left 17 dead.
The ECHR ruling said Romania hosted a CIA prison in 2003-2005, where Abd al-Nashiri was subjected to “an extremely harsh detention regime”.
The ruling said he suffered “inhuman treatment… which Romania had enabled by co-operating with the CIA”.
The same verdict was issued against Lithuania, concerning Abu Zubaydah. The CIA prison in Lithuania operated in 2005-2006.
Article Three of the European Convention on Human Rights, headed “Prohibition of Torture”, says: “No-one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
The ruling said the suspects were not subject to the harshest interrogation techniques in Lithuania and Romania – that happened in other prisons. But both countries had helped the CIA and failed to properly investigate the prisoners’ conditions.
The judges cited CIA documents, according to which terror suspects were subjected to blindfolding or hooding, solitary confinement, the continuous use of leg shackles, and excessive exposure to noise and light.
Both Lithuania and Romania had enabled the CIA to transfer the suspects to other prisons, exposing them to “a foreseeable serious risk of further ill-treatment”.
In 2014 the US Senate Intelligence Committee issued a detailed report on the CIA’s controversial “war on terror” interrogation programme and the “black sites”.
It said al-Qaeda suspects were subjected to repeated waterboarding, slapping, stress positions and sleep deprivation. Waterboarding is simulated drowning and was condemned as torture by the Barack Obama administration.
Abu Zubaydah was kept confined in a coffin-sized box for hours on end, the report said.
And according to the US Justice Department, the CIA used waterboarding at least 83 times in August 2002 against Abu Zubaydah, the New York Times reported.
He is thought to have been a top al-Qaeda operative who ran training camps in Afghanistan, where some of the 9/11 suicide hijackers trained.
The ECHR says the evidence shows that Abu Zubaydah was caught in Pakistan in March 2002 and was first moved to a CIA prison in Thailand. He was flown to another “black site” in Poland in December 2002.
He is believed to have been held in Lithuania from February 2005 to March 2006, when he was moved to Afghanistan and then to Guantanamo Bay.
Abd al-Nashiri faces a possible US death penalty, as military prosecutors have accused him over the USS Cole bombing and some other terror attacks. He allegedly also fought for the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Arrested in Dubai in 2002, he was held in CIA “black sites” in Afghanistan and Thailand. In December 2002 he was moved to another “black site” in Poland, and held there until June 2003, the ECHR says.
He is believed to have been held in Romania from April 2004 to October/November 2005, before his transfer to Guantanamo Bay in September 2006.”

KIEV (Reuters) – Ukraine on Thursday defended the action of its state security services in faking the death of a Russian dissident journalist after international criticism, saying the bizarre ruse had been essential for protecting him.
Ukraine revealed on Wednesday that it had stage-managed the fake murder of Arkady Babchenko, a critic of the Kremlin who they said had been targeted by hit-men hired by Russia, in order to trace a trail back to Russia and expose plans for his, and other, state-sponsored assassinations.
But some criticized the incident, which involved the phoney distribution of lurid details about his shooting and photographs showing him apparently lying in a pool of blood, as a stunt in poor taste which had sparked a false outpouring of grief and finger-pointing at Russia.
Some said the operation had hurt Kiev’s credibility and played to Russian prejudices about Ukraine.
“Relieved that Arkadiy #Babchenko is alive!” the office of the OSCE’s Harlem Desir tweeted. “I deplore the decision to spread false information on the life of a journalist. It is the duty of the state to provide correct information to the public.”
Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom who had expressed horror at Babchenko’s earlier reported murder, tweeted: “I am of course relieved that Arkady Babchenko is alive and well. Others are better placed to comment on the operation conducted by the Ukrainian Security Service.”

China rejects ‘ridiculous’ U.S. accusation of South China Sea militarization
BEIJING (Reuters) – U.S. assertions that China is militarizing the South China Sea are “ridiculous”, China said on Thursday, after U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Washington would confront China’s actions in the disputed waterways.
Mattis said on Tuesday the United States would push back against what it sees as China’s militarization of islands in the South China Sea despite China’s condemnation of a voyage through the region on the weekend by two U.S. Navy ships.
“The United States military presence in the South China Sea is greater than that of China and other countries that surround the seas combined,” Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular briefing.
Hua also questioned whether U.S. Navy “freedom of navigation” operations were really about preserving the right for ships to sail through the region or an attempt to maintain hegemony.
“This sounds like a case of a thief crying ‘stop thief’ to cover their misdeeds,” she said.
Speaking at a separate briefing, defense ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said they had noted that the United States had recently been “turning a blind eye to the facts and hyping up” the militarization of the South China Sea.

Left-wing billionaire George Soros wants the European Union to deal with the continent’s refugee crisis by maintaining an open borders policy and running up the EU’s credit.
The EU should take on debt in order to help improve economics conditions in Africa, as part of its response to the ongoing refugee crisis, Soros argued in a speech at the European Council on Foreign Relations’s annual meeting on Tuesday.
Soros pitched the idea of “an EU-led ‘Marshall Plan for Africa’” that “would require at least €30 billion ($35.4 billion) annually for a number of years” to help deal with the refugee crisis. Due to a “woeful shortage of financial resources,” Soros said, “EU member states could contribute only a small fraction of this amount. So, where could the money come from?”
“It is important to recognize that the refugee crisis is a European problem requiring a European solution. The EU has a high credit rating, and its borrowing capacity is largely unused,” he explained. “When should that capacity be put to use if not in an existential crisis?”

“Denmark has joined the European nations, which have already restricted the wearing of the Islamic veil in public spaces.
The Danish government has banned the Islamic full-face veil, such as the niqab and burqa, in public spaces, Danish Radio reported.
According to the text of the ban, the “burqa, niqab and balaclavas where only eyes and mouth are visible are examples of clothes that hide the face”.
A violation of the ban triggers a fine of DKK 1,000 ($156), which will be increased tenfold in case of repeat offence. Previous demands for a prison term for offenders were effectively dropped.
Earlier, Justice Minister Soren Pape Poulsen stated that the wearing of the religious garment is “incompatible with the values in Danish society and disrespectful to the community to keep one’s face hidden when meeting each other in public spaces.”
The ban was hailed by the right-wing Danish People’s Party (DF), which made the first proposal to ban the burka in public areas back in 2009.
“Official Denmark distances itself from political Islam, not only with words but also with action. In this way, the parliament makes it clear to everyone that the kind of extremism and brainwash, such as expressed by the burka and the niqab, is unacceptable in Denmark. It is incompatible with Danish culture,” DF integration rapporteur Martin Henriksen told Danish Radio.
Henriksen stressed that it took almost a decade to convince the parliamentary majority of the necessity of this step and pledged further efforts against the “Islamization of Denmark.”
While the ban has been made possible owing to a cross-party agreement between the “blue” government parties (the Danish People’s Party, the Liberals Left and the Conservatives) and the opposition Social Democrats, it was still met with criticism from a number of politicians representing various parties on Demark’s political landscape.
Among others, Liberal politician Eva Kjer Hansen called the ban “out of proportion” and a “violation of fundamental rights,” but said she had to defy her convictions and vote with the rest of the government after being appointed minister of fisheries.
The ban will come into force on August 1.
The daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten previously reported that only three women regularly wear burqa in Denmark. By contrast, the number of regular niqab wearers has been previously estimated at between 150 and 200, up to 80 of whom are estimated to be ethnic Danish women who converted to Islam.
Full face veils have been previously banned in a number of European nations, including France, Belgium, Latvia, Bulgaria and the Swiss Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, with penalties ranging from $127 to $235.”

However, the law is popularly known as the “Burqa Ban” and is mostly seen as being directed at the dress worn by some conservative Muslim women. Few Muslim women in Denmark wear full-face veils.
Justice Minister Soeren Pape Poulsen said that it will be up to police officers to use their “common sense” when they see people violating the law that enters into force Aug. 1.
The law allows people to cover their face when there is a “recognizable purpose” like cold weather or complying with other legal requirements, such as using motorcycle helmets under Danish traffic rules.
First-time offenders risk a fine of 1,000 kroner ($156). Repeat offenses could trigger fines of up to 10,000 kroner or a jail sentence of up to six months.
Anyone forcing a person to wear garments covering the face by using force or threats can be fined or face up to two years in prison.
Austria, France and Belgium have similar laws.
The justice ministry and the police now will write more detailed guidelines. Those “should be very concrete” as to what will be banned, said Bjoern Elmquist, a lawyer who has been a prominent opponent of the law.
If it turns out to focus only on women in the niqab or burqa, it could amount to discrimination against a minority group and hence be against the law, Louise Holck of the Danish Institute for Human Rights told TV2 television.”

The findings suggest there is popular support for UKIP’s 2017 manifesto pledge to ban the burqa, despite the suggestion being widely attacked and ridiculed at the time.
The poll also found that 45 per cent of church-going Christians regard Islam as fundamentally incompatible with British values and culture, with the figure rising to 47 per cent among non-practising Christians.
Among those who do not identify with a particular faith, 30 per cent still agreed that Islam did not fit in the UK.
Across Western Europe in general, practising and non-practising Christians had higher levels of negative sentiment toward migrant religions than the non-religious, the 24,000 interviews conducted by the Washington D.C.-based research centre indicated.
Non-practising Christians were less likely than church-attending Christians to express nationalist views, but both groups were more likely than the non-religious to say that their culture is superior to others.
This finding is interesting in light of recent comments by Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán and deputy minister Zsolt Semjen on the importance of revitalising “Christian democracy” to maintain social cohesion in Europe.
Semjen claimed that it was the collapse of Christianity in the West which had “enabled Islam’s entry into Europe to act like a hot knife cutting through butter.”
“This is not a question of religion,” he suggested. “Christian civilisation is also of vital importance to those [non-religious people] whose belief is in European identity. In this sense, therefore, what we are really talking about is European self-defence.””

From my experience, I do not think that I have even looked at a book cover WRT possible purchase since I was a teenager. The expression is quite valid as Eeyore has pointed out and the one thing that really annoys me about minorities, is not the fact that they exist, but the fact that some/most are determined to RAM their difference down your throat. When someone places their minority status before being human or other factors such as nationality, sex, age, do they actually realize how inverted are their values? Think about those who do not flaunt their difference and see just how often you actually notice it if at all and then even notice that it actually matters.

Germany’s train attacker, who stabbed two people yesterday, is an African migrant
The man, who attacked two people on a train that was heading for Flensburg, is a migrant from Eritrea, German media say.
After a dispute, a 35-year-old male passenger was attacked and seriously injured by the man. A policewoman who was on the train and confronted the African was attacked as well. She shot and killed the assailant.
The male passenger is recovering in hospital and has non-life-threatening injuries. The policewoman was only slightly injured.
According to Germany’s Spiegel Online, the suspected attacker is a 24-year-old man from Eritrea. He arrived in Germany via Austria in September 2015. He had a temporary residence permit for political, humanitarian or international reasons – so he legally stayed in the country.
Police say, the man lived in North Rhine-Westphalia; an autopsy should finally clarify his identity. For now, the police have ruled out a terrorist motive for the attack.

The man who waved an axe from a balcony on a housing block in Schiedam on Wednesday probably had a psychotic attack, and there are no signs he had a religious or terrorist motive, local mayor Cor Lamers told reporters on Thursday.
The police were called after passersby spotted the man, who was shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’, on the balcony on Wednesday afternoon.
The man, a 26-year-old Syrian national, attacked a police dog and several officers with knives when they entered the property. He was shot twice by the arrest team and was taken to hospital.
The dog later died of its injuries.
Lamers said the man, who has lived with his father since 2015, was known to social services but was not thought to have had major psychological problems. Officials will now investigate what contact he had had with specialists in the recent past.
‘He is a disturbed man with psychiatric problems,’ Lamers said. ‘I don’t want to make light of what happened, because people in that position can be dangerous too.’ The man is currently being treated in hospital and will be taken into custody on his release.

The debate over Spygate currently comes down to the claim that it was an investigation of the Russians rather than Trump. Some Republicans listened to their briefing and came out insisting that it was all about the Russians.
And maybe if that had been the only thing that happened, “We were just looking at the Russians” would be a plausible excuse.
The context however kills that excuse as dead as disco. There’s no reason to give FBI officials loyal to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama the benefit of the doubt when you look at the context.
Spygate was part of a larger effort against Trump. That effort linked together the Clinton campaign, the media and assorted government agencies.
The dismissal of Spygate treats it as an isolated event. If it’s an isolated event aimed at the Russians, how are we in the second year of the Mueller investigation? Why was Clinton campaign opposition research at the heart of an investigation of Trump officials?
You can’t interface with Fusion GPS, an arm of the Clinton campaign, on Trump and then claim it wasn’t about bringing down Trump.

Constitutionally protected free speech does indeed restrict the government (or at least the Federal government) from restricting our speech. But free speech is a concept that transcends any particular forum or organization.
ABC has the right to fire Roseanne. Starbucks has the right to tell you not to bring guns into its coffee shop. (There’s a certain amount of inconsistency in which parts of the Bill of Rights modern jurisprudence decided that private companies are obligated to protect and those which they aren’t. But that’s a subject for another time.)
Free speech is a larger concept than its particular legal protection in the Bill of Rights. It’s a societal value.
I have the right not to associate with someone I disagree with. So does ABC. ABC disagreed with the specific content of Roseanne’s views. It fired her.

Roseanne has lost her show over a supposedly “racist” tweet, and the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is thrilled.
CAIR’s National Executive Director Nihad Awad crowed: “We welcome the swift and appropriate action taken by ABC and hope it sends a message that the promotion of hatred and bigotry will not be accepted by our nation’s entertainment industry. Ms. Barr has a First Amendment right to express her views, however Islamophobic or racist, but she does not have a constitutional right to a program on a national television network.”
One of the problems with Roseanne’s tweet, according to Lynette Rice in Entertainment, was that it targeted Valerie Jarrett, “an African-American woman who served as a senior adviser for Obama from 2009 to 2017, seemed to refer to conspiracy theories falsely painting her as a closeted Muslim.”
Not necessarily. Maybe Roseanne was referring to the close ties between the Obama administration and the Muslim Brotherhood. The former U.S. prosecutor Andrew C. But that could just as easily apply to the New York Times.
The Times is unaware of the sublime hypocrisy of accusing the President of the United States of “sowing widespread suspicions about the government” even as it is doing just that.
The paper of broken record specializes in spreading conspiracy theories claiming that President Trump didn’t actually win the 2016 election but that “nefarious, hidden forces” made it happen. Its promotion of conspiracy theories about the 2016 election is obviously informed by its “political opportunism.”
But so are most conspiracy theories.
A conspiracy theory is usually the conspiracy. Democrats spread claims that the JFK assassination was a right-wing conspiracy. That conveniently redirected blame from the Socialist who pulled the trigger and from the Democrats who benefited from it. 9/11 conspiracy theories likewise shift blame away from Muslim terrorists and the Democrats who champion open migration from terror states like theirs.

Under his administration, deportations and detentions have reached record levels. It began with an attempt by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) to plant an improvised explosive device on the security fence separating Israel from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and ended with a near full-scale conflagration on a scale not seen since the summer of 2014. Tensions for the time being have tapered off but the recent fighting demonstrates why the Israeli Army (IDF) maintains a constant state of readiness along its volatile borders.
On Sunday, security forces monitoring the Gaza border detected an object attached to the border fence. Upon closer examination, it turned out to be a bolt cutter of the type used by Palestinian rioters to breach the fence in weeks prior. A remote controlled robot was sent in to inspect and remove the object utilizing a long cord. During the course of removal, the bolt cutter exploded. Fortunately, no one was injured but the situation could have just as easily resulted in casualties.
PIJ terrorists who planted the IED were then spotted manning a nearby observation post. An Israeli Merkava IV tank fired at the OP instantly killing two PIJ operatives. A third was mortally wounded and died soon after. Islamic Jihad swore vengeance.
Two days later, southern Israeli border towns and communities came under intense indiscriminate rocket and mortar bombardment. A kindergarten was hit but fortunately, the children had not yet arrived. Over the course of 22 hours, Hamas and PIJ fired over 100 rockets and mortars, 25 of which were shot down by Israel’s anti-rocket defense system, Iron Dome. According to military sources, the system also succeeded in intercepting incoming mortar rounds, a first in the annals of warfare. There were no fatalities but there was some property damage and three IDF soldiers were wounded, two lightly and one moderately. A civilian was also lightly injured.

Sudden temperature change can do the same thing. e.g. sunbaking and perspiring then standing up into a sea breeze or climbing a mountain peak and being hit by the “roaring forties’. The mechanism is vasomotor rhinitis and in those who suffer from it, it is warning that exposure is approaching. I cannot handle the cold but love it as I dress accordingly. Companions have almost died of exposure and have had severe frostbite but I was OK. Seasonal or allergic rhinitis is superimposed on top of it and in both cases the sneezing can lead to bronchospasm. Antihistamines do NOT work for vasomotor as only pseudoephedrine does and now (thx to amphetamines) you almost need a passport to purchase it.

UK “Justice”: “Silencing the Silencing”

First the good news: on Wednesday, at about noon London time, Tommy Robinson’s former lawyer, Helen Gower, reported on Twitter that “Tommy has just rung me and is well.” He had been receiving e-mails of support and was humbled by them. “He did inform me of some of the things that happened on Friday,” Gower wrote, “but I don’t want to put anything out and I will leave that to his Solicitor.”
Well, there it stands: the media gag order on the Tommy Robinson case has been lifted, but Robinson himself remains in Hull Prison, having been arrested on the street in Leeds, hauled into a kangaroo court, and then sent off to jail. Incidentally, in a YouTube video, Canadian activist Lauren Southern and a member of Robinson’s team have provided a plausible explanation of why the charge against Robinson declared by the police at the time of arrest, “breach of peace,” was changed to “contempt of court.” Apparently, the former offense would not constitute a violation of the terms of Robinson’s suspended sentence from last year and thereby justify immediate imprisonment. But by declaring Robinson guilty of “contempt of court,” the judge was able to ship him straightaway to prison.

Moreover, Russian nationals Yuri Dzhibladze and Olga Zakharova, who founded an NGO called the Civic Society Platform (CPS), are also allegedly connected both to Soros’s money and the Catalan independence movement, the senator’s team claims.
In October 2017 the CSP apparently worked in Catalonia just as the region held its independence referendum, with both Dzhibladze and Zakharova being invited by the World Organization Against Torture – a group aided by Soros.
In Barcelona, Dzhibladze and Zakharova reportedly became acquainted with David Bondia, a Catalan independence proponent and head of the Human Rights Institute of Catalonia, which is affiliated with Open Society Europe, a Soros-backed NGO.
As Senator Agramunt insists, the lobbyist network he uncovered “has orchestrated an international campaign aimed at discrediting and slandering my person through lies and falsehoods” and is comprised of “activists who have been supporting the independence attack in Spain.”
Previously, George Soros had also been repeatedly blamed for providing financial backing to groups that oppose the UK’s impending withdrawal from the European Union.
The billionaire has repeatedly used his Open Society Foundations NGO to donate heaps of funds to Best for Brexit, in addition to other similar groups. He’s been blamed for his attempts to interfere in democratic processes in order to align them with his personal agenda and business interests.
He was also blamed for interfering in last month’s Hungarian parliamentary elections, with Budapest claiming he had hired over 2,000 personnel to “meddle” in the election.”

“You have your own understanding of democracy. And when you violate democratic standards, you said it is sovereignty. So how can you try to teach democracy to Turkey then? Who gives you the right then? If you think that you have the right to criticize Turkey for this and that, you should also accept that I can criticize any country when they violate the democratic standards,” said Cavusoglu in the interview.

“TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Several Saudi military officers were wounded in an attack on a military base in the western city of Ta’if after gunmen killed a policeman and seized his weapons before attacking the facility.
Two attackers exchanged gunfire with security forces at a National Guard facility in Ta’if, some 70km east of Mecca, after killing a police officer and stealing his weapons and car before entering the site, the Saudi newspaper Sabq reported on Thursday.
“He (Deputy Sergeant Abdullah Mashary Al Quraishi) was doing his job and managing road traffic on the Army road in the Ta’if district when he was stabbed by one of the assailants and was severely injured,” a source cited by Sabq said.
“He died as a result of his wounds.”
Al Jazeera cited Sabq as reporting that several soldiers were wounded and one of the attackers sustained injuries and was arrested. The other escaped.
Videos uploaded on social media showed scenes of panic at the scene while the sound of rapid gunfire could also be heard in the background.

“TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Thursday lashed out at the US State Department for its new report on religious freedoms in the Islamic Republic, saying the report is politically-motivated.
In a statement on Thursday, the spokesman of the ministry, Bahram Qassemi, said the Islamic Republic of Iran regards the report as unrealistic, unfounded and biased, and believes it has been drawn up to make certain political gains.
“In this report, once again a distorted and politically-tainted picture is painted of the situation of religious freedoms in the Islamic Republic of Iran coupled with baseless accusations which are far from reality and definitely unacceptable,” he said.
He then touched upon the interpretations that the report offers of religions and religious beliefs.
“Putting forward imaginary, fabricated and groundless interpretations of religions and religious beliefs will finally lead to the further deterioration of interfaith problems, conflicts and crises, and will have no constructive and positive outcome,” he noted.
“In order to settle religious differences and ensure proximity among religions, it is necessary to seriously avoid politicising the issue and take steps on this path with reliance on dialogue and respect for others’ opinions, and based on lofty human values and respect for the followers of all divine faiths,” Qassemi underlined, the ministry website reported.
“It seems that the US government has forgotten this key objective and only seeks to make political capital out of the religious diversity in some world countries, and it is believed that this country does not have a precise and realistic assessment of the domestic situation of countries, especially their demographic and religious condition,” he noted.
“History bears witness to the fact that the great people of Iran, who enjoy a rich and age-old civilisation and culture, have lived side by side in a completely peaceful and fraternal atmosphere for thousands of years.”
“Following the victory of the glorious Islamic Revolution [of Iran], too, followers of all faiths have practiced their religious rituals in different religious centres across Iran in keeping with the principles of the Constitution and in accordance with the law, which supports these freedoms,” he said.”

“The US Treasury blacklisted on Friday six Iranians and three Iran-based entities in its third measure since President Donald Trump announced his country’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal and vowed a strong return of sanctions.
The sanctions, announced on the US Treasury’s website, also targeted the group Ansar-e Hezbollah and the Hanista Programming Group.
Ansar-e Hizballah is a political group sanctioned for supporting Iran’s top political and spiritual official Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and has been tied to the violent suppression of Iranian citizens, including street attacks against protesters.
Three of the group’s leaders, including the organization’s Mashhad branch top official Hamid Ostad.
Ostad, who founded the Mashhad branch of Ansar-e Hizballah, was implicated in a mob attack against the Saudi Arabia Consulate in Mashhad in 2016.
“Iran not only exports terrorism and instability across the world, it routinely violates the rights of its own people. The Iranian regime diverts national resources that should belong to the people to fund a massive and expensive censorship apparatus and suppress free speech,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.
Abolhassan Firouzabadi and Abdolsamad Khoramabadi were also sanctioned for having engaged in censorship or other activities with respect to Iran that prohibit, limit, or penalize citizens of Iran.
Firouzabadi is responsible for the Iranian government’s efforts to block social media applications like Telegram and to force Iranians to use state-run applications that are monitored by the regime.
As the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace, Firouzabadi heads the country’s top Internet policymaking body and oversees the regime’s attempts to censor speech and media.
As the Secretary of the Committee to Determine Instances of Criminal Content, Khoramabadi has overseen the filtering and blocking of political content during elections. In 2017, Abdolsamad Khoramabadi tasked the Basij to lead the regime’s crackdown on cyberactivity and claimed that the country had thousands of monitors to report violations of websites and social media networks.
Evin Prison was also blacklisted for acting on behalf of the Government of Iran (including members of paramilitary organizations) who is responsible for ordering serious human rights abuses against prisoners.
Prisoners held at Evin Prison are subject to brutal tactics inflicted by prison authorities, including sexual assaults, physical assaults, and electric shock.
Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintain permanent wards in Evin Prison where they hold political prisoners.
And while senior regime officials regularly downplay the torture and abuse that occurs in Evin Prison, the abuse of prisoners, including political prisoners, continues once sham inspections into the prison conditions end.”
