  1. Ex-FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe expected to file lawsuits for defamation, wrongful termination
    2 hours

Ex-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is planning to file lawsuits for “defamation, wrongful termination and other claims,” the New York Post reported.
When is this expected to happen?

His attorney, Michael Bromwich, said Friday they are still determining the timing of the suits. McCabe’s legal team indicated they want the case to be solid and will “file when we’re ready,” Axios reported.

  2. New emails show Hillary-FBI-DOJ coordination

Newly uncovered emails containing 22 messages with “Top Secret” information found on former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s personal email server indicate that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Justice (DOJ) “coordinated” efforts to devise a response to a major development in her email probe.

The recent discovery bolsters Republicans’ newly raised allegations that there was a “concerning level of coordination” between the FBI and DOJ during Clinton’s private email investigation.

“Republican Rep. Mark Meadows cited [the accusations] in a letter earlier this week claiming former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony to Congress – in which he downplayed FBI-DOJ coordination on the Clinton case – may be at odds with documents suggesting ‘frequent’ coordination,” Fox News announced.

    • FRANCE – MANIFESTO against the new antisemitism

      =========================================

      Manifeste «contre le nouvel antisémitisme»

    • AFP- 300 French personalities sign manifesto against ‘new anti-Semitism’

PARIS (AFP) – More than 300 French dignitaries and stars have signed a manifesto denouncing a “new anti-Semitism” marked by “Islamist radicalisation” after a string of killings of Jews, to be published in Le Figaro newspaper Sunday.

The country’s half-a-million-plus Jewish community is the largest in Europe but has been hit by a wave of emigration to Israel in the past two decades, partly due to the emergence of virulent anti-Semitism in predominantly immigrant neighbourhoods.

“We demand that the fight against this democratic failure that is anti-Semitism becomes a national cause before it’s too late. Before France is no longer France,” reads the manifesto co-signed by politicians from the left and right including ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy and celebrities like actor Gerard Depardieu.

The signatories condemned what they called an “quiet ethnic purging” driven by rising Islamist radicalism particularly in working-class neighbourhoods.

They also accused the media of remaining silent on the matter.

“In our recent history, 11 Jews have been assassinated — and some tortured — by radical Islamists because they were Jewish,” the declaration said.

The murders referenced reach as far back as 2006 and include the 2012 deadly shooting of three schoolchildren and a teacher at a Jewish school by Islamist gunman Mohammed Merah in the southwestern city of Toulouse.

Three years later, an associate of the two brothers who massacred a group of cartoonists at satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo killed four people in a hostage-taking at a Jewish supermarket in Paris.

In April 2017, an Orthodox Jewish woman in her sixties was thrown out of the window of her Paris flat by a neighbour shouting “Allahu Akhbar” (God is greatest).

The latest attack to rock France took place last month when two perpetrators stabbed an 85-year-old Jewish woman 11 times before setting her body on fire, in a crime treated as anti-Semitic.

Her brutal death sent shockwaves through France and prompted 30,000 people to join a march in her memory.

Condemning the “dreadful” killing, President Emmanuel Macron had reiterated his determination to fighting anti-Semitism.

“French Jews are 25 times more at risk of being attacked than their fellow Muslim citizens,” according to the manifesto.

It added that some 50,000 Jews had been “forced to move because they were no longer in safety in certain cities and because their children could no longer go to school”.

  3. Caravan Of Refugees Arrives At U.S.-Mexico Border; Refugees Ask For Asylum

Remember that caravan that the mainstream media — and Mexican officials — said was no longer heading to the U.S.-Mexico border?

Yeah, they arrived at the border.

The story of the marching caravan — 1,500 refugees strong — was all over the news for a week, with the MSM breathlessly covering the plight of the poor refugees who surely deserved free entry into the United States. But the story disappeared as outlets reported that the caravan was no longer heading to the border.

“The first 50 Central American migrants in a caravan that set out from southern Mexico in late March have reached the U.S. border, now secured with help from National Guard personnel sent by President Donald Trump,” Newsmax reported on Friday.

  4. Richard: They want to let a bunch of radical leftist take over a Sheriffs deparmtment!! What could possibly go wrong?

So-Called ‘Black Lives Matter Ballot Measure’ Would Transform World’s Largest Sheriff’s Department

Patrisse Cullors, a police and prison abolitionist who co-founded Black Lives Matter, is leading a signature-gathering drive to place a referendum on the November ballot that would transform the largest sheriff’s department in the world.

News of the proposed Reform Jails and Community Reinvestment Initiative was first reported by NBC 4 Los Angeles, which labeled it the “Black Lives Matter Ballot Measure.” Proponents want more community control over the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), which provides law enforcement services to 42 contract cities and operates the nation’s largest jail system.

The potential countywide initiative, if approved by voters, would give a civilian oversight panel subpoena power over LASD. Currently, that nine-member board is limited to making recommendations in an advisory role. The measure would also task that same panel with developing a plan to reallocate billions of dollars budgeted for two new correctional facilities to anti-incarceration alternatives and social programs.

  5. US Commander: People’s Liberation Army now controls South China Sea, could only be stopped by ‘war’

According to the head of US Fleet Forces Command, China has amassed enough defenses to control the entire South China Sea.

The remarks were made in a statement to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, by Navy Admiral Philip S. Davidson, who wrote: “Once occupied, China will be able to extend its influence thousands of miles to the south and project power deep into Oceania. The PLA will be able to use these bases to challenge US presence in the region, and any forces deployed to the islands would easily overwhelm the military forces of any other South China Sea-claimants.”

    • Pacom Nominee: China Military Islands Now Control South China Sea
Admiral urges rapid U.S. buildup of hypersonic and medium-range missiles to counter China threat

China has deployed electronic attack systems and other military facilities on disputed islands in the South China Sea and is now capable of controlling the strategic waterway, according to the admiral slated to be the next Pacific Command chief.

Additionally, the command nominee Adm. Philip Davidson told the Senate Armed Services Committee in a written statement this week that the military urgently needs hypersonic and other advanced weaponry to defeat China’s People’s Liberation Army in a future conflict.

“In the future, hypersonic and directed energy weapons, resilient space, cyber and network-capabilities, and well-trained soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen will be crucial to our ability to fight and win,” the four-star admiral said in written answers to questions from the Senate Armed Services Committee.

On China’s militarization and take over of the South China Sea, Davidson said the buildup of forward military bases began in December 2013 at Johnson Reef in the Spratly islands. Since then, the Chinese have fortified that reef and six others with military facilities, Davidson said.

      • China isn’t the biggest threat the “formerly” Free World faces but it is a rapidly growing number 2, if the Chinese continue to grow their military at the current rate the US would be hard pressed to fight them in 10 years or so. We need to develop hypersonic weapons, develop the counter to their space weapons and encourage our allies in the Far East to modernize their forces. Right now we and our allies are more then a match for the Chinese but unless we start developing the new weapons as fast as we can this won’t be the case for long. The lead time for modern weapons is measured in decades and the lower the funding for research the more decades it will take. Right now we can fund the R & D and maintain our edge over China and Russia. If we don’t continue the funding we will lose our edge and may have to play catch up during a major war.

      • Admiral urges rapid U.S. buildup of hypersonic and medium-range missiles to counter China threat

Finally! Some slightly reasonable talk about “next-generation” US warfare. Thank you, Richard.

Why put priceless boots on the ground when a mere handful of skillfully placed (courtesy of precision Mil-Spec avionics), multi-million dollar “hypersonic and medium-range missiles”, can fill the bill? (This question is not asked in jest.)

In the future, hypersonic and directed energy weapons, resilient space, cyber and network-capabilities, and well-trained soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen will be crucial to our ability to fight and win,” the four-star admiral said in written answers to questions from the Senate Armed Services Committee.

  11. reuters – Tens of thousands of Hungarians protest against PM Orban’s rule

Tens of thousands of Hungarians protested on Saturday against government control over the media, which they say helped Prime Minister Viktor Orban to a landslide election victory earlier this month.

The rally in Budapest was the second mass protest against Orban since the April 8 election, with demonstrators urging the fragmented opposition parties to join forces against the rightwing nationalist Fidesz party, which won two-thirds of parliamentary seats at the polls.

Since 2010, the Hungarian premier has increased his control over the media and put allies in charge of formerly independent institutions, while his stand on refusing to accept large numbers of migrants in Hungary has also brought him into conflict with the European Union.

As tens of thousands of protesters waved flags at the foot of Elizabeth Bridge spanning the Danube, speakers called for freedom of the media and a change in government.

Peter Marki-Zay, who beat the Fidesz candidate in a mayoral by-election in February, urged opposition parties on the right and left to build an alliance and put aside their former bickering.

“History has proved that no oppressive regime lasts forever,” he said.

“We shall fight … against their media dominance and factories of lies.”

“It is fear that holds this system together, and if from tomorrow people no longer have their fears this system will fall.”

In a Facebook post before the rally, organizers said state media has been turned into Orban’s “propaganda machine”.

“Our main goal is to dismantle Fidesz control over the public media … but opposition parties also have a task as they are also responsible for this situation we are in,” they said.

Protesters gathered at the parliament building and then walked to the bridge, waving national and EU flags. Last Saturday, tens of thousands had protested at parliament against what they see as an unfair election system.

Protesters held banners with slogans such as “Viktor give us back democracy”, “We want freedom of the press” and “Regime change”.

    THIRD TERM

“Today is the beginning of a process … in government, I am sure that the opposition parties would not be able to cooperate. In opposition, I see more chance for that,” said Adam Farkas, 21, a student.

“We disagree on many things … but we all want to live in Hungary and the main obstacle to that is Viktor Orban.”

Orban won a third straight term in power after a strong anti-immigration campaign. The strongest opposition party in the new parliament is the formerly far-right Jobbik, which has recast its image to be a more moderate nationalist force. Its leader resigned after the election.

The leftist opposition parties are also in turmoil.

“It is not Fidesz which won the election, the opposition parties lost it,” said Viktor Mikes, a 26-year old administrator at a multinational company. He said opposition politicians should all step aside, and that new people were needed.

“We should start with a clean slate,” he said.

The election victory appears to have emboldened Orban to put more effort into his fight against the EU’s migration policies and harden his stance on NGOs that he says have been meddling in Hungary’s affairs.

In an interview on Friday on state radio Orban accused George Soros, the Budapest-born financier, of political activism in Hungary, saying his circle had supported the opposition.

“I know they won’t accept the result of the election, they will organize all sorts of things, they have unlimited financial resources,” Orban said.

The foundation of George Soros on Friday accused Orban of trying to stifle non-government groups, and said it could leave the country if parliament passes a “Stop Soros” law that would impose a 25 percent tax on foreign donations to NGOs that support migration.

The government says the legislation is meant to deter illegal immigration.

“Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said his counterparts from 35 countries plan to attend an international conference due to open in Tehran on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference in Tehran on Saturday, Rear Admiral Khanzadi said the Iranian capital is slated to host the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) from Sunday, April 22, to Wednesday, April 25.

Navy commanders from 35 countries will participate in the conference, he said, adding that in addition to the IONS member states, some countries like the Caspian Sea littoral states requested to take part in the gathering as guests, which was accepted, he said.

During the international event, the Iranian Navy will take over the presidency of the IONS for two years.

The Iranian Navy commander further said there will be bilateral meetings with navy chiefs of other countries on the sidelines of the conference.

The IONS is a voluntary initiative that seeks to increase maritime co-operation among navies of the littoral states of the Indian Ocean Region by providing an open and inclusive forum for discussion of regionally relevant maritime issues.

In the process, it endeavors to generate a flow of information between naval professionals that would lead to common understanding and possibly cooperative solutions on the way ahead.

  18. Beheadings on Rise in Saudi Arabia (tasnimnews, Apr 21, 2018)
    https://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2018/04/21/1705769/beheadings-on-rise-in-saudi-arabia

“TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Amid mounting criticism of Saudi Arabia over its human rights record, a new report by a nonprofit organization shows that the number of beheadings in the kingdom during the first quarter of 2018 rose by over 70 percent compared to the same period last year.

In its latest report published Saturday, the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) said executions by the Saudi government in the first quarter of 2018 increased by 72% compared to the corresponding period last year.

According to the report, a number of foreign nationals also face capital punishment in Saudi Arabia.

The report came against a backdrop of widespread criticism of the kingdom over its terrible human rights record, including the censorship of free speech, indiscriminate incarceration of citizens with no due process, or the lack of basic freedoms for women and girls.

Although the Riyadh government does not disclose any official statistics for people on death row, ESOHR has confirmed that 42 people are facing imminent execution, including 8 people who were minors at the time of the offence.

The report has also decried the Saudi regime’s move to execute people for alleged offenses that do not even cross the serious crimes threshold defined by the international law, noting that the convicts have simply attended peaceful demonstrations, exercised freedom of speech, or practiced their religious rites.

Since 2008, Saudi Arabia has rejected all requests for visits by special independent rapporteurs of the United Nations, who are concerned about the kingdom’s human rights violation, the report added.

In March 2017, Michel Forst, a UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights, expressed serious concerns about the situation of human rights defenders in Saudi Arabia.

Also in a report in September 2017, the UN Secretary General deplored Saudi Arabia for practicing intimidating acts such as travel bans, freezes on assets of people, and the use of torture against individuals or groups that collaborate with the UN institutions or programs.

Figures show that 146 people were decapitated in Saudi Arabia in 2017, of whom 56 were foreigners.

    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1244636/tehran-warns-multi-front-scenario-against-israel-netanyahu-vows-respond

“Conflict between Iran and Israel escalated on Friday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing the readiness to confront Iran at any price and with Iran responding through Deputy Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander (IRGC) Hossein Salami, who said Iran is ready to target Israel from two fronts, adding that Israel will only have to flee through the sea.

Anyone who aims to harm Israel will pay a heavy price, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday morning at a special cabinet meeting for the 70th year of declaring Israel.

“We hear threats from Iran, and the Israeli forces are prepared for every possible Iranian move. We will fight whoever tries to harm us. We will not shy away from action against those who threaten our security. They will pay a heavy price,” warned Netanyahu.

Iran immediately responded to Netanyahu’s comments via Salami, who threatened Israel saying: “Do not trust your air bases, they are within the range of fire. Our fingers are on the trigger and the missiles are ready to launch. The moment the enemy decides to act against us, we will launch them.”

“We have learned ways to overcome our enemies, and we can harm the enemies vital interests anywhere we want,” Salami added.

Observers view those threats as serious and could lead to a direct dangerous clash, given there is no third force to ease the tension between the two.

In response, Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned Tehran on Friday not to even consider an attack on the Jewish state, which he said Israel has never been better prepared to counter Iran.

“I would suggest to all those on our northern border to think again about what they are doing,” Liberman said.

The minister stressed that Israel is ready for every scenario, including a multi-front scenario, adding: “I don’t remember a time when we were so prepared and so ready, both the army and the people of Israel.”

Things deteriorated two weeks ago when Israel bombed an Iranian air base in Damascus known as T4, killing 14 persons including 7 Iranian officers. Iran officially vowed to retaliate.

Last Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said his country will sooner or later respond to the recent crime and aggression of Israel. Qassemi said the attack will be met with a response, emphasizing that Israel’s “hit and run” policy shouldn’t be tolerated anymore.

Israel responded to the threat via a senior Israeli security official who said that “in the event of a military confrontation with Iran in Syria, Israel will bring down the Syrian regime.”

New York Times journalist Todd Friedman published a statement that he considered a “slip of the tongue” from a senior Israeli army officer in which he said Israel had hit Iran’s base and killed Iranian officers. It was then published that it was “calling the Israeli reserve was a mistake, as a result of a computer error.”

According to an Israeli official, the “mistake” was not a mistake but a part of the war plans.

Earlier on Thursday during a meeting with foreign diplomats, Netenyahu addressed the officials saying there are two things that “you can do to help Israel celebrate this great Independence Day. The first thing is—speak out against Iran.”

“Iran is the enemy of us all—of Israel, the Arab world, Civilization,” he stressed.

The Prime minister addressed that it is 2018 and Iran openly speaks about liquidating Israel.

“It encircles the whole Middle East which it wants to conquer, it fires rockets into Riyadh and Saudi Arabia, it is occupying Lebanon effectively, it’s trying to inflame Gaza again, it is in Iraq, and it is trying to establish a military base in Syria, which all peace loving nations should resist, speak out against Iran,” he urged.

According to Israeli military expert Alex Fishman, the sequence of events during the past week in Israel, which included a series of “mistakes”, was not a coincidence, but a strategy pursued by Israel aimed at entering into a military confrontation with Iran on Syrian territory.

At this stage, Israel concluded that diplomatic methods and the limited military strikes are no longer adequate, and it must take new steps, according to Fishman. However, he noted that the policy of controlling “flames” contains a large amount of risk.

Israel currently expects Russia to intervene in the matter and accept its red lines, rejecting any Iranian military presence in Syria. Russia has no interest in a confrontation between Iran and Israel at present time, as it would suspend and possibly end all agreements and compromises reached by Russia in Syria so far.”

    • Remember the AMIA murders in Argentina? Doesn’t “anywhere” translate to “Jews outside of Israel”?

“We have learned ways to overcome our enemies, and we can harm the enemies vital interests anywhere we want,” Salami added.

    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20180421-hrw-decries-expulsion-of-syrian-refugees-from-lebanon/

“Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Friday condemned the expulsion of hundreds of Syrian refugees from their temporary residences in Lebanon.

“At least 13 municipalities in Lebanon have forcibly evicted at least 3,664 Syrian refugees from their homes and expelled them from the municipalities, apparently because of their nationality or religion,” HRW said in a Friday report.

“Another 42,000 refugees remain at risk of eviction,” the report added.

“Municipalities have no legitimate justification for forcibly evicting Syrian refugees if it amounts to nationality-based or religious discrimination,” Bill Frelick, HRW’s director for refugee rights and the author of the report, said.

According to the report, HRW interviewed 57 Syrian refugees affected by the recent evictions, as well as municipal officials and legal experts.

“In some cases, Syrians said the [Lebanese] authorities used violence to evict them,” the report stated.

According to activists, Syrian refugees in Lebanon remain subject to frequent “racist” acts, including raids on their homes and deportation.”

    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/298075/Egypt/Politics-/EgyptEU-to-sign-new-energy-partnership–.aspx

“The European Union is set to sign a strategic partnership agreement on energy with Egypt, 22-24 April, a press release by the European Commission read.

European Climate and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete will arrive to Cairo Sunday and is expected to meet Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

“Egypt is becoming an upcoming important gas and electricity hub that can provide energy security for the EU and for the entire region,” said Cañete in the statement.

On behalf of the Commission, Cañete is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian government that will last from 2018 to 2022.

The memorandum highlights six priorities in the context of the EU-Egypt partnership.

These priorities include, according to the statement, “further assistance to the development of the oil and gas sector,” “continued support to electricity sector reforms,” and “development of the energy hub.”

The statement also references “Further assistance with joint measures and projects in the field of renewable energy,” “additional support on energy efficiency strategies, policies and measures, across various sectors,” and “cooperation in technological, scientific and industrial areas across the energy field.”

During his visit, Cañete is expected to meet with Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla.

Cañete is also expected to meet with European energy companies and launch the EU-Egypt Sustainable Energy Business Forum & Exhibition.

The two-day trip will include a site visit to Egypt’s Zohr gas field, discovered in 2015 and estimated to contain 30 trillion cubic feet of gas. The gas filed is located near Egypt’s Suez Canal city of Port Said.

“There is much to gain, in terms of access to new sources of energy and market opportunities, for European and Egyptian citizens and businesses alike. The EU stands ready to support Egypt in its energy market reforms and to boost sustainable energy investment,” said Cañete.

The last agreement signed between Egypt and the EU was in Brussels in 2008 to enhance EU-Egypt energy cooperation.

That agreement covered, among other areas, energy market reform, convergence of Egypt’s energy market with that of the EU, promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency, the development of energy networks, and technological and industrial cooperation.

The new memorandum of understand will replace that signed between the EU and Egypt in 2008.”

“The Afghan government has approved the proposed draft investment policy to kick start the extraction and process of marble deposits worth more than 150 billion US Dollars.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, said the proposed draft was discussed and approved during the meeting of the High Economic Council chaired by President Mohammmad Ashraf Ghani.

It was decided that clear technical standards should be considered and implemented for the extraction of the mines.

According to ARG Palace, the meeting concluded with the decision that taxes will be reduced for all those companies that respect the implementation of the recognized standards.

President Ghani said the government welcomes investments but the circumstances surrounding the investment types and its effectiveness must be clear.

The officials are saying that the marble deposits have been estimated at more than 150 billion US Dollars and currently 25 companies operate in the extraction section while 108 other companies are busy in the process of the raw materials.

The ARG Palace in a statement said the proposal of the Natural Stone Processing Company was discussed during the meeting and the it was decided that the company was eligible for the award of the contracts.

The Ministry of Finance was instructed to consider customs tax exemptions in this regard while the State Utility Firm (Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat) was instructed to assist with the provision of commercial power for the extraction of the marble deposits.”

  31. Around 100 far-right activists on Saturday tried to block a French alpine pass used by migrants in a bid to “ensure that no illegal immigrant can return to France”.
Members of the right-wing Generation Identity (GI) movement trudged through the snow up to Col de l’Echelle near the border with Italy where they plan to spend the night.

The pass is a “strategic point of passage for illegal immigrants” entering from Italy, GI spokesman Romain Espino, told AFP, criticising what he called “a lack of courage of the public authorities”.

“With a little bit of will, we can control immigration and borders,” he added.

The group — mainly French but also including Italians, Hungarians, Danes, Austrians, English and Germans — plan to set up a “symbolic frontier” using plastic wire mesh.

Espino said the activists want “to explain to the potential migrants that it is inhumane to make those people crossing the Mediterranean or the snow-covered Alps believe that these routes are not risky”.

“Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül has sent a letter to his Greek counterpart Stavros Kontonis, saying that “Greece has become a gathering place for criminal.”

Gül’s letter came following a Greek high court’s decision to release a former Turkish soldier from custody, state-run Anadolu Ageny reported on April 21.

On April 19, the Greek Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, ordered the release of Süleyman Özkaynakç? under judicial control.

Özkaynakç? is one of the eight former Turkish servicemen who fled to Greece a day after the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

Gül has said in his letter that Greece repeatedly refused to extradite the ex-soldiers to Turkey and that the court order to release one of them upset Turkey.

Gül also said Greece had condemned the failed coup attempt of 2016 but afterwards had taken to sheltering and protecting those responsible for the coup attempt, thereby casting a shadow over Turkish-Greek solidarity.

“Since the failed coup, Greece has been a safe haven for criminals from our country,” he wrote.

“Greece has become a gathering place for criminals,” Gül said, adding that the former Turkish soldiers in Greece should be extradited to Turkey as soon as possible.”

“The number of “neutralized” militants in Turkey’s operation in northwestern Afrin, Syria has risen to 4,254, while 37 militants were also neutralized in operations over the past week in northern Iraq and eastern Turkey, the Turkish army said on April 21.

In a written statement, the Turkish General Staff announced the latest number of “neutralized” militants since the Jan. 20 start of Operation Olive Branch.

Turkish authorities often use the word “neutralized” in their statements to imply that the militants in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.

Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch on Jan. 20 to clear the People’s Protection Units (YPG) from Afrin in northwestern Syria.

In the same statement, the General Staff also said air operations had been conducted against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) between April 14 and 20 in Turkey’s eastern provinces of Tunceli, Diyarbak?r and ??rnak, as well as northern Iraq.

Thirty-tree PKK targets, including shelters and hideouts, were destroyed during the airstrikes, the statement said.

Airstrikes on PKK targets in northern Iraq, where the group has its main base in the Mt. Qandil region, near the Iranian border, have been carried out regularly since July 2015, when the PKK resumed its armed campaign.”

“Greece will this summer lease two state-of-the-art French warships, the defence ministry said Friday, as Athens seeks to bolster its defences in the Aegean Sea amid growing tensions with Turkey.

Confirming a report by the daily Kathimerini, Greece’s deputy defence minister, Fotis Kouvelis, told Skai radio that France “has made two frigates available to us in a leasing agreement.”

The deal was finalised in a telephone call between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and French President Emmanuel Macron, Kouvelis said.

According to the daily Kathimerini, Greece will lease two French FREMM-type navy frigates for a period of five years, with the vessels expected to be inducted into the Greek Navy by August.

At the end of the five-year lease, Greece is to take delivery of its first Belharra frigate, Kathimerini reported.

The acquisition of the two frigates — probably the Languedoc and the Aquitaine — was part of efforts to boost the country’s military capabilities at a time of rising tensions with Turkey, the newspaper said.

In the meantime, speaking on Friday afternoon, French Defence Minister Florence Parly said that the news “is not relevant, although of course we are at the disposal of our Greek friends to continue working even more closely.”

A Greek defence ministry source expressed surprise at Parly’s comments, insisting that Greek premier Tsipras had given the go-ahead on Thursday evening for Kouvelis to talk about the deal.”
