  1. Anybody seen the latest episode of “Looming Tower” on Amazon? I must say I enjoyed the series until the very last episode when they interviewed one of the bodyguards of a terrorist and convinced him to testify based on:

The point is that the verse was again grossly misquoted, in a typical fashion portraying Islam as a religion of peace. In that scene they even presented “the holy book” in front of the guy who was being interrogated as a proof, here you go buddy you got it wrong. Clearly he should have read it in full and then should have pointed to the following verse 5:33 (the context) as a proof to support the terrorist agenda. Anyway, the most peaceful verse as it’s known is nicely explained here:

  2. ISIS Threatens ‘Satanic’ CNN, Universal Studios Hollywood, NASA

Indonesian ISIS supporters circulated posters online warning that Satan is behind the American financial system as well as media and entertainment, threatening to attack a handful of entities.

The first poster, telling adherents to “think smart,” shows a devilish figure looming over several icons in flames: the United Nations, the Federal Reserve, Universal Studios Hollywood, CNN, NATO Allied Command Transformation and NASA, along with the reverse of the Great Seal on the U.S. dollar bill.

An ISIS jihadist fires a gun up at the seals, with the words “Allahu Akbar!” above his head.

“Those who believe fight in the way of Allah and those who disbelieve fight in the way of Taghut [un-Islamic rulers],” says the poster.

The al Qaeda terror organization is using Google Maps to plan precision jihadist attacks across the Middle East, according to a new propaganda video released by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula that features a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner who has since returned to the terror group after being freed from the prison, according to a new report from a regional media monitoring organization.

Al-Malahem, the media arm of Al-Qaeda In The Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, released on Friday a propaganda video featuring Sudanese national and former Gitmo detainee Ibrahim Al-Qusi, a onetime financial asset for al Qaeda who was arrested in December 2001 and spent more than 10 years as a convicted terrorist in Gitmo before being released to Sudan in 2012.

Al-Qusi appears to be one of many former Gitmo inmates who returned to the battlefield after being freed from Gitmo.

In the newly released video featuring al-Qusi, “AQAP also documents the training, planning, and execution of a series of operations targeting security forces, checkpoints, and military bases in multiple locations using different tactics including martyrdom operations, commando raids, shelling, shootings, and assassinations,” according to a new report from the Middle East Media Monitoring Institute, or MEMRI.

  4. Youth violence will bring a summer of carnage, warns surgeon Martin Griffiths

A leading trauma surgeon has predicted a summer of “carnage” if alarming rates of youth violence continue across the capital.

Martin Griffiths said that treating children with knife and gunshot wounds had become “the bread and butter” of his work at the Royal London Hospital in east London.

He said that the warmer weather would further inflame violence among young Londoners and that the severity and frequency of attacks had reached a level he would expect in South Africa or the US.

  5. Venezuela Police Attack Patients, Doctors at Hospital Shortages Protest

Police in Venezuela attacked patients and doctors protesting outside the country’s Health Ministry in Caracas on Wednesday, marking the latest incident of police brutality in the failed socialist state.

According to the Latin America Herald Tribune, protesters were shouting genocidas – “genocide perpetrators” – over the current collapse of the country’s health system. They also demanded a meeting with Health Minister Luis López, who refused to attend.

After they tried to gain access to the building, local police responded by engaging in a “shoving match” with the protesters, many of whom are patients suffering from diseases such as Parkinson’s and HIV and are now failing to receive their required medication provided by the government.

The Vice Minister of Health Jessyca Aleman met with some protesters, including Francisco Valencia, the head of the medical NGO Codevida, who confirmed that the government simply lacked the necessary capacity to respond.

  6. Democratic Party files suit alleging Russia, the Trump campaign, and WikiLeaks conspired to disrupt the 2016 election

The Democratic Party on Friday sued President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the Russian government and the Wikileaks group, claiming a broad illegal conspiracy to help Trump win the 2016 election.

The multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court says that “In the Trump campaign, Russia found a willing and active partner in this effort” to mount “a brazen attack on American Democracy,” which included Russian infiltration of the Democratic Party computer network.

The Trump campaign, according to the lawsuit, “gleefully welcomed Russia’s help.”

The suit says that “preexisting relationships with Russia and Russian oligarchs” with Trump and Trump associates “provided fertile ground for [the] Russia-Trump conspiracy.”

  7. Pacom Nominee: China Military Islands Now Control South China Sea
Admiral urges rapid U.S. buildup of hypersonic and medium-range missiles to counter China threat China has deployed electronic attack systems and other military facilities on disputed islands in the South China Sea and is now capable of controlling the strategic waterway, according to the admiral slated to be the next Pacific Command chief.

Additionally, the command nominee Adm. Philip Davidson told the Senate Armed Services Committee in a written statement this week that the military urgently needs hypersonic and other advanced weaponry to defeat China’s People’s Liberation Army in a future conflict.

“In the future, hypersonic and directed energy weapons, resilient space, cyber and network-capabilities, and well-trained soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen will be crucial to our ability to fight and win,” the four-star admiral said in written answers to questions from the Senate Armed Services Committee.

On China’s militarization and take over of the South China Sea, Davidson said the buildup of forward military bases began in December 2013 at Johnson Reef in the Spratly islands. Since then, the Chinese have fortified that reef and six others with military facilities, Davidson said.

  8. Has Beijing just put the finishing touches to its battle plan to take back Taiwan?

Besides Wednesday’s live-fire naval drill in the Taiwan Strait, the PLA has been flying fighter jets and bombers close to the self-ruled island – possible signs of a coordinated battle plan, experts say

Recent patrols by China’s air force in and around Taiwan appear to be part of a coordinated strike plan across different branches of Chinese military that will encompass the entire area – possibly as preparation for military conflict with the self-ruled island, experts say.

The air force conducted several “island encirclement” patrols in and around Taiwan in recent days, the People’s Liberation Army said on Thursday – one day after the mainland’s navy carried out a live-fire drill in the Taiwan Strait.

Song Zhongping, a former member of the PLA’s Second Artillery Corps, said that although the live-fire drill appeared smaller than expected, that was probably because it was part of a wider mission.

Are the US and China headed for war over Taiwan?

“It seems like the exercise near Fujian was relatively small, but actually, there were several joint operational drills happening in different areas around Taiwan at the same time [on Wednesday],” he said.

“The comprehensive, joint operational drills suggest the PLA is not just targeting one area, but the whole region.”

  9. Report: North Korea To Stop Nuclear, Ballistic Missile Testing

North Korea announces it will be putting an end to its nuclear programs and will no longer be testing intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The decision is effective immediately and is another sign that tensions between North and South Korea may be cooling off.

Kim Jong Un says there is no more need for missile testing and the country will also be shutting down a nuclear test site in the north part of the country, according to South Korean media

This comes just days after Kim Jong Un met with CIA director Mike Pompeo in Pyongyang and weeks before a scheduled meeting between President Trump and the North Korean leader.

  10. Report: James Comey under DOJ investigation

Fired FBI director James Comey is now the subject of a Department of Justice investigation.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the DOJ internal watchdog is looking into Comey’s handling of classified information as part of the memos he gave to a friend documenting discussions with Pres. Trump. The inspector general is reportedly investigating whether classified intelligence was given to an unauthorized source.

At least two of the Comey memos released on Thursday were deemed to contain classified information.

Comey has repeatedly denied there was any classified intelligence in the memos that were handed over to congress.

  11. North Korea says will stop nuclear tests, scrap test site

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea will immediately suspend nuclear and missile tests and scrap its nuclear test site and instead pursue economic growth and peace, the North’s state media said on Saturday, ahead of planned summits with South Korea and the United States.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country no longer needed to conduct nuclear tests or intercontinental ballistic missile tests because it had completed its goal of developing the weapons, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

It was the first time Kim directly addressed his position on North Korea’s nuclear weapons programs ahead of planned summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in next week and with U.S. President Donald Trump in late May or early June.

The pledge to halt the development of nuclear weapons, initiated by his grandfather, would mean a significant reversal for the young leader, now 34, who has staked his security on his nuclear arsenal and spent years celebrating such weapons as an integral part of his regime’s legitimacy and power.

  12. DNC sues Trump campaign, Russia, WikiLeaks over 2016 election
    By J.E. Dyer April 20, 2018

In a way, it’s hard to take this seriously because it’s so blindly foolish. More on that in a moment.

Matt Vespa at Townhall presents it as a move by Democrats who just can’t get over it. Maybe so.

Given the extensive, vast, colossal, titanic, gargantuan downside of bringing this lawsuit, I figure the real purpose is to use every means possible to keep the media theme going, and keep Trump’s presidency turning on a spit over an open flame.

Perhaps some Democratic insiders know already that Mueller’s got nothing and isn’t going to come up with anything, so now seemed like the time to do this. My thinking would be that since the voters are getting pretty tired of it, the kickoff of primary season for the 2018 midterms is a really dumb time to try to fan these particular flames. But maybe some Democrats see this as a winner at the polls. Maybe they think the putative blue-collar, purple-state Trump defectors they’re on the hunt for will turn out in big numbers for a party that’s suing the president for winning in 2016.

I don’t see it, myself. At any rate, here is how the Washington Post summarized it in the original report:

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/04/21/surgeon-violence-london-africa-carnage/

“London’s crime wave will develop into “carnage” come summer, a leading trauma surgeon has predicted, warning ultra-violence in the capital is “the new normal”.

Dr Martin Griffiths, a consultant surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust, said soaring knife and gun crime has resulted in London “looking more like South Africa, or inner-city U.S.” with regards to the rate of attacks.

“If it was hot weather right now, it would be carnage. When it gets a few degrees warmer, it’s going to be taxing. It’s going to be difficult,” he told The Times.

The doctor, who earlier this month revealed some of his military colleagues have likened the situation seen in London trauma wards to hospitals in Middle East warzones, said that treating young teenagers with life-threatening injuries had become “the bread and butter” of his work at the Royal London Hospital…”

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/04/21/devon-mosque-took-250000-al-qaeda-sympathiser/

“A mosque in Devon, England has admitted taking funds from a radical cleric who backed al-Qaeda aligned militia groups in Libya, describing him as “a highly respected member of the community”.

Exeter Mosque denies extremism, but is coming under mounting pressure to reveal how much money it took from Sadiq Al-Ghariani (pictured) following concerns the institution may have benefited from terrorism.

Al-Ghariani has been banned from Britain because of his views, and online videos have shown him praising violent jihad and appearing to express support for terror-linked groups in Libya, the Plymouth Herald reports.

In one video, he rants: “Those of them who die, are dying for the sake of God.”

“Mr. Sadiq Al Ghariani has resided in Exeter in the past, and was a highly respected member of the community,” the mosque told the Plymouth Herald in a statement.

“At the time, Exeter Mosque had no reason to doubt him and no concerns were raised with the mosque or its trustees by any governmental bodies, law enforcement or any concerned member of the community.

“We are not aware of his activities in Libya and therefore have informed the police of the contents of this petition.”

The mosque refused to say how much they took off the alleged extremist, but an online petition claims the donations from Ghariani totalled almost a quarter of a million pounds…”

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/04/21/muslim-woman-denied-french-citizenship-refusing-shake-hands-official/

“A French court has confirmed and upheld a previous court ruling which denied French citizenship to a Muslim Algerian woman after the woman refused to engage in a handshake with a senior official.

The origins of the case date back to 2010 when the Algerian woman married a French citizen in her home country of Algeria, and after four years made a request to authorities for French citizenship, La Croix reports.

The prefecture of Isere, where the woman lives, initially accepted her request to become a French citizen and in 2016 she was to attend a citizenship ceremony but during the ceremony, she refused to shake the hands of officials for “religious reasons.”

“After solemnly handing her the naturalization decree, the secretary-general of the prefecture and a local elected representative extended a hand to her as a sign of welcome. But the woman refused these handshakes by invoking her religious beliefs,” an official said.

As a result of the incident, the prefecture decided to revoke the offer of citizenship under the grounds that the woman was not sufficiently integrated into French culture…”

The fate of the second victim is less clear as he was found dead in his cell on April 8th from an unknown cause. According to a source within the prison guards union, the man had visited the prison doctor the day before after vomiting in his cell. He was found the following day after another inmate used an emergency telephone to alert the guards.

Fleury-Mérogis prison has become notorious across the country for its high population of radical Islamic extremists and houses several of the country’s most dangerous terrorists, including Salah Abdeslam, one of the terrorists who took part in the 2015 Bataclan massacre…”

“A Syrian Democratic Forces commander has told Sputnik that residents of the city of Manbij in northeastern Syria are on heightened alert due to the planned Turkish military operation in the area but that the current situation in the city is stable.

“Not long ago, we discussed the issue related to Turkey’s possible attack on Manbij with the US military which promised to retaliate against any assault on the city, regardless of who would launch this attack,” Ebu Adil, commander of the Manbij Military Council within the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), stressed.

  20. Alon Altman, a senior software engineer at Google, pressured the company to sabotage President Trump’s Android phone, according to new evidence released via James Damore’s class-action lawsuit against the company.
Calling on the tech giant to use the “full economic force [of] Google for good”, Altman also suggested deleting the gmail accounts of Trump, his administration, and his aides for “abuse.”

Altman – who is still employed by the tech giant – also called on Google to blacklist “alt-right’ sites on the Google ad network (she falsely included Breitbart News in this category — an assertion refuted by a Harvard and M.I.T. study), and take down all “alt right videos” from YouTube. 21. A rejected asylum seeker who targetted women in a stabbing attack said he was at “war against women” and committed the attack to “strengthen the Islamic kingdom”.
Moroccan Abderrahman Bouanane, 23, told the district court on Wednesday that he had justified his attack because of Western nations’ military action against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, Helsingin Sanomat reports.

The court heard that the defendant was inspired to attack the eight women and two men with a knife in the southwestern Finnish city of Turku on August 18th, 2017, by a 23-year-old Uzbek-based Turkish man he met at the mosque.

The Turk, who is currently the subject of an international search, allegedly told Bouanane that Finland was guilty of causing the instability in Syria and sent 100 soldiers to fight there. Finland has sent 100 trainers to Iraq since 2015.

In addition to the multi-million dollar debunked Christopher Steele dossier that gained FISA warrants against President Trump’s teams, at least two more Obama or Clinton dossiers have been discovered.

“There was yet another Clinton dossier, this one created by Cody Shear, who also got into the FBI supposedly through Fusion GPS. And Cody Shear goes way back. He’s a longtime Clinton operative. So there are two dossiers. And guess what, we just found a third dossier. This one created by the Obama State Department. We received the documents,” said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch.

“Shortly before Trump came into office, the Obama State Department gathered intelligence, classified material on Russia activities in elections and public policy, and fights abroad, specifically in Europe. I don’t know if the U.S. was covered because the documents are so heavily redacted, we can’t tell. And they sent them to their buddy, Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland,” Fitton said.

According to CNN, Hendon ordered that the family’s names not be released.

The parents reportedly continued to call their daughter by her given name, rather than a male name, and refused to consent to hormone treatments that were recommended by her medical team. 28. What Had Never Been Said In Saudi Arabia. A First For Tauran

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, has been in the capital of Saudi Arabia since April 13, and will stay there until April 20, thereby repaying the visit made to the Vatican on September 20, 2017, by the secretary general of the Muslim World League, the sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa.

Welcomed by Prince Muhammad bin Abdurrahman bin Abdulaziz, vice-governor of Riyadh, Cardinal Tauran gave at the headquarters of the Muslim League, during his meeting with the sheikh Al-Issa, an address without precedent in the history of relations between Christianity and Islam, not because of the things that were said but because of the place where they were pronounced.

It was in fact the first time that in Saudi Arabia, the homeland of Wahhabism, one of the most radical currents of Islam, a leading representative of the Catholic Church has spoken out in public and with clarity on capital questions like freedom of religion and equal rights for believers of all faiths.

Here is a brief anthology of the things that Cardinal Tauran said in Riyadh, printed in “L’Osservatore Romano” of April 17.

    *

    ON THE CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS

“What is threatening all of us is not the clash of civilizations, but rather the clash of forms of ignorance and radicalism. What is threatening coexistence is first of all ignorance; therefore, to meet together, speak, build something together, are an invitation to encounter the other, and also means discovering ourselves.”

ON OPENING THE HOLY PLACES TO ALL

The cardinal recalled how the Christian sacred places, “in the Holy Land, in Rome or elsewhere, together with the numerous shrines in many parts of the world,” are “always open to you, our Muslim brothers and sisters, to believers of other religions, and also to every person of good will who does not profess a religion.” Besides, he added, “in many countries the mosques are also open to visitors,” and this, he said, “is the kind of spiritual hospitality that helps us to promote mutual understanding and friendship, contrasting prejudice.”

ON THE TRUE MEANING OF MARTYRDOM

“Religion is the dearest thing a person has. This is why some, when they are called to choose between keeping the faith and remaining alive, prefer to accept paying a high price: they are the martyrs of all religions and of every time.”

    ON FUNDAMENTALISM

“In all religions there are forms of radicalism. Fundamentalists and extremists may be zealous person, but unfortunately they have deviated from a solid and wise understanding of religion. Moreover, they consider those who do not share their vision as unbelievers who must convert or be eliminated, so as to maintain purity. They are misled persons who can easily go on to violence in the name of religion, including terrorism. They become convinced, through brainwashing, that they are serving God. The truth is that they are only hurting themselves, ruining the image of their religion and their coreligionists. This is why they need our prayer and our help.”

ON EQUAL TREATMENT AMONG ALL THE RELIGIONS

After clarifying that “religion can be proposed, never imposed, and then accepted or rejected,” Cardinal Tauran identified as one of the fields in which Christians and Muslims must be in agreement, seeing that “in the past there has been a great deal of competition between the two communities,” that “of common rules for the construction of places of worship.” In fact, all the religions must be treated in the same way, without discrimination, because their followers, together with the citizens who do not profess any religion, must be treated equally,” he remarked in referring to the always relevant theme of “full citizenship” for all. In part because “if we do not eliminate the double standards of our behavior as believers, religious institutions and organizations, we will foster Islamophobia and Christianophobia.”

ON THE CONDEMNATION OF TERRORISM BY RELIGIOUS LEADERS

“Spiritual leaders have a duty: to keep the religions from being at the service of an ideology, and to be able to recognize that some of our coreligionists, like the terrorists, are not behaving correctly. Terrorism is a constant threat, and because of this we must be clear and never justify it. The forms of terrorism want to demonstrate the impossibility of coexistence. We believe the exact opposite. We must avoid aggression and denigration.”

    ON INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUE

“All authentic interreligious dialogue begins with the proclamation of one’s own faith. We do not say that all religions are equal, but that all believers, those who seek God and all persons of good will devoid of religious affiliation, have equal dignity. Everyone must be left free to embrace the religion that he wishes.” After this came the concluding appeal to join forces “so that God, who created us, may not be a motive of division, but rather of unity.”

POSTSCRIPT – On Wednesday, April 18, Cardinal Tauran also had a conversation with the king of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz, with whom he again spoke on how the Christian and Muslim religions and cultures can work together in repudiating violence and terrorism and in promoting peace.

In confirmation of the top-level nature of the meeting, the king was accompanied by the interior minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Muhammad bin Nayef bin Abdelaziz Al Saoud, the foreign minister, Adel Al-Jubeir, and the secretary general of the Muslim World League, Sheik Muhammad Abdul Karim Al-Issa. With Cardinal Tauran (see photo) was Bishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, secretary of the pontifical council for interreligious dialogue.

Previously, on Sunday, April 15, the cardinal had met and celebrated Mass with a sizable Catholic community made up mostly of immigrants from Asia.

    • “Religion is the dearest thing a person has.”
      When Souls are taken away;
Truth, (the nearest thing a person has)
      Looks heavenwards to pray.
Common Sense is the clearest thing a person has,
      Made crimes should someone say.
Insights are the sheerest thing a person has:
      Thought-Policing keeps at bay.
Submission is the leeriest thing a person has:
      Muslim, Communist, Gay.
Radical Sex is that ‘fear-rest’ thing a person has
      To make themselves O.K.
Suicide, the self-interest thing a person has
      To never face today.

“This is why some, when they are called to choose between keeping the faith and remaining alive, prefer to accept paying a high price: they are the martyrs of all religions and of every time.”

      • There are two types of Marytrs:
Those who decline Compelled Speech, and those who force words into your mouth.

Muslims, Communists and Homosexuals demand submission and the recognition of their superior and preferential identities. Claiming martyrdom when they kill to silence others they call inferior as, “kufar,” “bourgeois,” and “breeders.” The Collective-Identified destroy the individual.

The foolish Religious Christians, those who should be saving lost souls, enter the lions den and claim equality with them. They are laughed at for having no discernment. A mockery of having ‘The Holy Spirit,’ and “The Mind of Christ.”

        • Submission is not repentance
          A name-change – not born again
          Slaughter is not remittance
          That balances your sin.
          A Death for a Death
          An Eye for an Eye
          The truth’s the living breath

      • Etidal

The Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology, Etidal, received Tuesday, April 17, in its headquarters in the Saudi capital Riyadh a delegation from the Vatican State headed by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in an official visit where many issues were discussed. The visit reflects the global efforts to promote the values of peace and tolerance and to renounce hate speech and violence.

The delegation was welcomed by the Secretary General of Etidal, Dr. Nasser Albiqami, and some of Etidal’s leadership. A brief overview was made of current and future projects at Etidal. These aim at building strategic plans and messages, in accordance with the ideological, technical and media pivots of the Center, aspiring to achieve a global message that refutes extremism and call for coexistence and peace.

Dr. Albiqami discussed with the delegation Etidal’s global objectives to spread the culture of moderation among the world’s nations. The role of the Center in promoting tolerance and coexistence among different cultures, nations and religions was stressed.

Cardinal Tauran paid tribute to Edtial for its efforts, especially for its capability to analyze the causes of extremism.</strong 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 In a speech after watching a presentation about Etidal’s projects and programs, he emphasized that the primary cause of extremism, according to him, is the absence of justice, noting that extremism and ignorance are the real enemies of mankind and that most of people’s violent reactions are due to their ignorance of who you are or who they are.

During the visit, advanced technologies were reviewed in the control and command center, where all contents related to spreading hatred and extremism are being observed before addressing, processing and combating them through ideological, technical and media projects and programs.

The woman, who has not been named, said her “religious beliefs” prevented her from shaking the hand of the male official in the citizenship ceremony.

A government ruling said it showed she was “not assimilated into the French community” and denied her citizenship.

She appealed, but France’s highest administrative court upheld the ruling.

The Algerian woman has been married to a French man since 2010.

  31. orth Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has announced Pyongyang will carry out no more nuclear or intercontinental ballistic missile tests and will shut down its atomic test site, the North’s state media reported Saturday.

The declaration, long sought by the US, will be seen as a crucial step in the fast diplomatic dance on and around the Korean peninsula.

It comes less than a week before Kim meets South Korean leader Moon Jae-in for a summit in the Demilitarized Zone that divides the peninsula, and ahead of a much-anticipated encounter with US President Donald Trump.

“As the weaponization of nuclear weapons has been verified, it is not necessary for us to conduct any more nuclear tests or test launches of mid- and long-range missiles or ICBMs,” Kim told a ruling party meeting.

  32. Bergoglio’s Reform Was Written Before. By Martin Luther

At this point in the pontificate of Francis, I believe it can be reasonably maintained that this marks the twilight of that imposing historical reality which can be defined as “Roman Catholicism.”

[…]It seems evident to me, in fact, that this is the plan being deliberately pursued by the “brain trust” that has clustered around Francis: a plan understood both as an extreme response to the crisis in relations between the Church and the modern world,

[…]This is a matter of a rational vision of the world that makes itself a visible and solid institution and fatally enters into conflict with the idea of representation that emerged in modernity, based on individualism and on a conception of power that, rising from the bottom up, ends up bringing into question the principle of authority.

[…]Will the operation carried forward by Pope Francis and by his “entourage” see lasting success, or will it end up encountering resistance within the hierarchy and what remains of the Catholic people, greater than the decidedly marginal forms that have emerged so far?

And more in general: what consequences could this have[…]

  35. CANADA – HALIFAX – Teen charged in Nova Scotia government breach says he had ‘no malicious intent’

19-year-old says he believed documents were ‘free to just download’ from province’s FOIPOP web portal

The 19-year-old facing a criminal charge for downloading files from Nova Scotia’s freedom-of-information portal sits in a sofa in his parent’s living room in Halifax.

His bedroom is upstairs. That’s where police found him sleeping when 15 officers raided the family home last Wednesday morning.

His demeanour is polite, almost meek. When he speaks, his voice is quiet. He could easily pass for younger than 19.

“Computers have been a part of me for a very long time,” he said.

The teen has been charged with “unauthorized use of a computer,” which carries a possible 10-year prison sentence, for downloading approximately 7,000 freedom-of-information releases.

The vast majority of these files were already publicly available, and had been redacted prior to release to remove any personal information.

But about 250 of the reports were prepared for Nova Scotians requesting their own government files. These un-redacted records contained sensitive personal information, and were never intended for public release.

The government has faced continued questions since it announced the privacy breach last week.

On Friday, the premier accused the teenager of “stealing” the information.

But in an interview with CBC News, the 19-year-old says he thought he was downloading an archive of public information that was supposed to be freely available on the internet.

    Anonymity

The teenager has not been formally arraigned on the single charge, so his name is not yet public.

At the family’s request, CBC News is granting him anonymity because of his hope the charge will be dropped and his reputation preserved.

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to get a job if this gets on my record.… I don’t know what my future will be like,” he said.

    Early talent

Some of the teenager’s earliest memories involve playing with MS Paint on the family computer.

When he was around eight, he remembered playing around with the HTML of the Google search page, making the coloured letters spell out his name.

Around the same time, his Grade 3 class adopted an animal at a shelter, receiving an electronic adoption certificate.

That led to a discovery on the classroom computer.

“The website had a number at the end, and I was able to change the last digit of the number to a different number and was able to see a certificate for someone else’s animal that they adopted,” he said. “I thought that was interesting.”

    Researching teachers

The teenager’s current troubles arose because he used the same trick on Nova Scotia’s freedom-of-information portal, downloading about 7,000 freedom-of-information requests.

He says his interest stemmed from the government’s recent labour troubles with teachers.

“I wanted more transparency on the teachers’ dispute,” he said.

After a few searches for teacher-related releases on the provincial freedom-of-information portal, he didn’t find what he was looking for.

“A lot of them were just simple questions that people were asking. Like some were information about Syrian refugees. Others were about student grades and stuff like that,” he said.

So instead, he decided to download all the files to search later.

“I decided these are all transparency documents that the government is displaying. I decided to download all of them just to save,” he said.

He says it took a single line of code and a few hours of computer time to copy 7,000 freedom-of-information requests.

“I didn’t do anything to try to hide myself. I didn’t think any of this would be wrong if it’s all public information. Since it was public, I thought it was free to just download, to save,” he said.

    Passion for archiving

It wasn’t the first website the 19-year-old had saved for general interest.

He estimates he has around 30 terabytes of online data on hard drives in his home, the equivalent of “millions” of web pages.

He usually copies online forums such as 4chan and Reddit, where posts are either quickly erased or can become difficult to locate.

“I preserve things, I archive the internet. I have history on my computer, and all of that should be saved and preserved,” he said.

His mother vouches for her son’s passion for organizing, even cataloguing his late grandfather’s VHS collection of home video and recordings off the television.

“I don’t think he did anything wrong. He’s a good boy and he saved stuff.”

    Police raid

The family was going through its morning routine last Wednesday when the police banged on the front door.

The mother says she, her husband, and two of her kids were corralled in the living room.

“They read us our rights and told us not to talk,” she said.

“Our daughter, she was really traumatized, really bad — brought her to tears, the way they conducted this,” said the father.

She says at one point there were 15 officers in the home.

“People were going into the kitchen, were going into the dining room, going upstairs. They went into the basement. They were [traipsing] through the house, everywhere,” the mother said.

She says the family is still working through the mess they left behind.

“They rifled through everything. They turned over mattresses, they took drawers and emptied out drawers, they went through personal papers, pictures,” she said. “It was totally devastating and traumatic.”

She says police seized her son’s computers, plus her husband’s cellphone and work computers, which has left him unable to do his job.

They also seized her younger son’s desktop computer, after he was arrested on the street walking to high school.

Officers took her 13-year-old daughter to question her in a police car.

“My little ones are asking, ‘Will I be able to get a job because we were arrested?'” she said.

    Next steps

The 19-year-old accused says he’s been passing his time watching TV and doing paper crosswords because he’s not allowed to access the internet.

He’s worried he’ll lose his academic year.

“I’ve been feeling kind of sick the whole past week. Haven’t been eating much. Haven’t been doing much at all,” he said.

He says this is his first time he’s ever been in this kind of trouble.

“I have never been in the legal system ever in my life.… This is the first time for me. All this is first, and it’s all new, and I don’t know what to do.”

The teenager says since he was downloading public records off a public website, it all feels unfair.

“I just had no malicious intent and I shouldn’t be charged for this,” he said.

An influential Islamic preacher convicted of hate speech in France has been deported after his appeal to the European Court of Human Rights was rejected.
