  2. Italy detains Egyptian imam accused of preaching violence

ROME: Police in southern Italy have detained an Egyptian imam who ran a cultural center where he allegedly preached extremist and violent interpretations of Islam to children.

Financial police in Foggia say Mohy Eldin Mostafa Omer Abdel Rahman is accused of criminal association with the aim of terrorism and instigation to violence. During a raid Tuesday, police seized his Al Dawa cultural center.

A police statement said the seizure was part of a larger investigation that resulted in the arrest in July of a Chechen man, Eli Bombataliev, accused of fighting with the Daesh group in Syria and participating in a deadly attack on foreign and Russian journalists in Chechnya.

Italy has been spared an Islamic extremist attack, thanks in part to widespread wiretapping and expulsions of suspected extremists.

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and national security adviser Susan Rice is joining Netflix’s board of directors.

“I am thrilled to be joining the board of directors of Netflix, a cutting-edge company whose leadership, high-quality productions, and unique culture I deeply admire,” Rice said in a statement.

Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings praised Rice’s experience working on intelligence issues during her tenure in the Obama administration.

“We are delighted to welcome Ambassador Rice to the Netflix board,” Hastings said in a statement on Wednesday. “For decades, she has tackled difficult, complex global issues with intelligence, integrity, and insight and we look forward to benefiting from her experience and wisdom.”

Rice is not the only former member of the Obama administration with ties to the streaming service.

The New York Times reported earlier this month that former President Obama is in talks with Netflix about producing a series of shows.

“President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire,” Eric Schultz, senior adviser to Obama, told the Times. “Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”

the independent – Tommy Robinson permanently banned from Twitter

EDL founder’s personal and news pages are suspended

Tommy Robinson has been permanently banned from Twitter.

The EDL founder’s personal page and another account that appears to be associated with him have been suspended and are inaccessible.

When asked about the ban Twitter cited its hateful conduct policy. The policy prohibits the promotion of both violence and incitement of harm towards others, on a number of grounds.

The social network did not respond to questions about the specific reasons for the ban.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, left the EDL in 2013 but has remained politically active.

He was suspended by Twitter earlier this month before having his account reactivated.

He was also one of a number of right-wing figures to see his verified status removed in November after Twitter issued new guidelines for “blue tick” accounts in the wake of public pressure.

Robinson’s Facebook page remains intact, with some 700,000 fans.

In February the outgoing head of UK anti-terror policing said there was “no doubt” material posted online by Robinson had contributed to the radicalisation of Finsbury Park mosque attacker Darren Osborne.

“He had grown to hate Muslims largely due his consumption of large amounts of online far-right material including, as evidenced at court, statements from former EDL leader Tommy Robinson, Britain First and others,” Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said.

“Osborne had a ‘dysfunctional’ background and history of alcohol and drug abuse, and violence. There can be no doubt that the extremist rhetoric he consumed fed into his vulnerabilities and turned it into violence.”

  19. politico – Bolton and Pompeo might unleash Trump on ‘radical Islam’

Outgoing officials like H.R. McMaster and Rex Tillerson were seen as moderating influences on Trump‘s rhetoric and actions.

The latest shifts on President Donald Trump’s foreign policy team, including his choice of John Bolton as national security adviser, have rekindled fears among lawmakers and activists that the White House will further damage America’s precarious standing in the Muslim world.

Bolton chairs an organization that produces harshly critical commentary about Islam and Muslim immigrants and he also has close ties to controversial activists often described as anti-Muslim.
He succeeds Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, who urged Trump to avoid a favorite phrase — “radical Islamic terrorism” — because it offends many Muslims as a blanket condemnation of their faith.

Trump also decided this month to nominate Mike Pompeo, the current CIA director, as secretary of state, replacing the fired Rex Tillerson. Pompeo has accused U.S. Muslim leaders of being “potentially complicit” in terrorist attacks/strong> and, like Bolton, has consorted with conspiracy theorists who have peddled false claims about Muslims. Tillerson, on the other hand, generally used cautious language when it came to Islam and had extensive business experience in the Muslim world.

Both Bolton and Pompeo will now be working for a president who has alleged, with no evidence, that American Muslims celebrated the 9/11 attacks, and who has proposed banning all foreign Muslims from U.S. shores. Critics say the personnel moves suggest Trump’s worst instincts on how to approach the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims will find receptive ears among his foreign policy aides.

“Either they don’t even care, or they’re intentionally picking people known for their Islamophobia,” said Wa’el Alzayat, a former State Department official who now leads the Muslim-American activist group Emgage. “We’re very troubled.”

Groups such as Emgage, Human Rights Watch and the Council on American-Islamic Relations are urging lawmakers to speak out against Bolton and Pompeo. Bolton doesn’t require Senate confirmation for his position, but Pompeo will have to face a vote in that chamber.

Some also have concerns about Pompeo’s planned successor at the CIA, Gina Haspel, who is reported to have run a secret CIA prison in Thailand where suspected al Qaeda operatives were tortured. “Gina Haspel should be investigated, not nominated,” Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said in a recent statement.

Some Muslim-American activists describe a sense of déjà vu: Similar fears abounded in the early days of the Trump administration as the president installed several top aides whose rhetoric towards Muslims and Islam has drawn wide criticism. They included then-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who once called Islam a “cancer”; political strategist Steve Bannon, who took a hard line against Muslim immigration; and Sebastian Gorka, who dueled with McMaster over the use of the phrase “radical Islam.”

Their fears of a militant policy towards Muslims seemed confirmed when Trump, early in his presidency, imposed a travel ban on people from several Muslim-majority countries.

But over the past year Flynn, Bannon and Gorka have all been forced out of the White House, along with some others who shared their views.

Trump, meanwhile, has developed unexpectedly good relationships with some of the world’s Muslim leaders, including top members of Saudi Arabia’s royal family.

But if there was a sense among Trump’s critics that McMaster and Tillerson had been restraining his worst instincts, there is now concern that Bolton and Pompeo might encourage them.

Bolton has longtime associations with activists criticized for their extreme views of Muslims. He wrote the foreword to “The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration’s War on America,” by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer—both prominent critics of Islam. (“Excelsior!” Geller tweeted in response to Trump’s announcement that Bolton would be assuming the post of national security adviser.)

Bolton also has close ties to another anti-Muslim activist, Frank Gaffney, who has promoted the theory that the Muslim Brotherhood is infiltrating the U.S. government with the goal of imposing Islamic law on Americans. According to The Atlantic, Bolton helped Gaffney gain a more prominent role at the 2016 Conservative Political Action Conference after years of his having been marginalized by the event’s organizers.

Bolton was a guest on Gaffney’s radio show as recently as last month. On Twitter, Gaffney called Bolton’s appointment a “game-changer” for Trump’s presidency and said that “McMaster and Tillerson have been among those who have fancied themselves the ‘adults’ in the administration, determined to stop the President from doing what they oppose.”

“Now the President will have actual adults who actually want to help him succeed,” Gaffney added. “Hallelujah.”

Bolton also serves as the chairman of the Gatestone Institute, which describes itself as a “non-partisan, not-for-profit international policy council and think tank” and serves as a forum for harsh criticism of Islam. Articles on its website often exaggerate or misrepresent the religion and stoke fears of Muslim immigrants. In one posting this month, an author declared, falsely, that for Muslims, “everything Christians believe is pure blasphemy.” In another recent post, a writer argued: “The U.K. is accelerating its Islamization at an ever-increasing speed.”

Bolton’s own writings and discussions of Islam have been notably more nuanced, however. While Bolton doesn’t hesitate to use terms such as “radical Islam,” he has tried to distinguish the religion’s extremists from its mainstream adherents. “We are talking about politics and ideology here, this is not a question of religion,” he said in one speech. “It’s actually Muslims themselves who have felt the worst effects of Islamic terrorism and who suffer under its rule.”

When Trump, on the presidential campaign trail, proposed banning Muslims from U.S. shores, Bolton called the idea “completely wrong.” “That’s just not consistent with our views about America and how we should operate,” he said.

A person close to Bolton said the former ambassador “stands by his writings and speeches.” The Gatestone Institute did not respond to a request for comment.

Bolton’s appointment as national security adviser doesn’t require Senate confirmation, a relief for him because he has so many skeptics in the Senate, including some Republicans. When Bush named Bolton as his ambassador to the United Nations in 2005, he did so using a “recess” appointment to evade a Senate vote.

Pompeo, however, is expected to face tough questions from senators pondering his nomination for secretary of state. Many of those queries may focus on his past apparent support for “enhanced interrogation techniques,” or torture. (Haspel already faces similar scrutiny.) But his record of anti-Muslim comments and affiliation also is likely to come up.

As a Republican congressman from Kansas, Pompeo in 2013 accused American Muslim leaders of failing to condemn the Boston Marathon bombings, saying their alleged “silence has been deafening” and that that made them “potentially complicit.” Many U.S. Muslims denounced the claim as a false smear given numerous condemnations of the bombings issued by Muslim leaders in the U.S. and beyond.

As a lawmaker, Pompeo fought to have the Muslim Brotherhood designated as a terrorist group and made numerous appearances alongside Gaffney. Pompeo also has ties to ACT for America, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has said“pushes wild anti-Muslim conspiracy theories, denigrates American Muslims and deliberately conflates mainstream and radical Islam.”

Pompeo was among the recipients of ACT for America’s National Security Eagle Award for 2016, according to the group’s website.

“ACT for America has always welcomed and included members and supporters of all faiths, who stand united under the same flag of freedom and support for Western values,” Brigitte Gabriel, the group’s founder, said in a statement to POLITICO. “Mike Pompeo has been a clear leader in understanding the threats that America faces from rogue actors all over the world.”

While Pompeo’s role as CIA director had already been of concern to U.S. Muslim leaders, they are even more worried about the possibility of him serving as secretary of state. As America’s chief diplomat, he’ll be more in the public eye, more likely to meet with the leaders of the Muslim world and more involved in shaping U.S. foreign policy.

During his confirmation hearings for CIA director, some Democratic senators were concerned enough to press Pompeo onwhether he would discriminate against Muslim employees and safeguard U.S. alliances with Muslim-majority nations. Pompeo downplayed such concerns. “Discrimination against any employee based on their religion is deeply objectionable and will not be tolerated,” Pompeo pledged in one exchange.

Such rhetoric hasn’t assuaged Pompeo critics like the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has also condemned Haspel’s nomination to replace him as CIA chief.

“Those, like Mr. Pompeo, who have expressed Islamophobic views and have been associated with an anti-Muslim hate group, or like Ms. Haspel, who personally oversaw the torture of detainees, should have no role in our nation’s government, let alone at the highest levels of policy-making,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a March 13 statement. “These appointments have the potential to harm our nation’s image and our relations with key players in the international community.”

  20. REPORT: Clintons Received Cash From Sadistic Cult Leaders

It’s a bizarre and twisted tale of brainwashed sex “slaves” who were branded with a leader’s initials on their private parts – and top executives of the secretive group in upstate New York reportedly pumped thousands of dollars into Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Keith Raniere, co-founder of NXIVM, was arrested Monday in Mexico and extradited to the U.S., where he is being charged with sex trafficking. He appeared in court Tuesday in Texas and signed a waiver for US Marshals to bring him back to New York.

On Tuesday, the FBI raided the Albany home of Nancy Salzman, 63, a registered nurse and hypnotist who is president of NXIVM. The organization describes itself as a “community guided by humanitarian principles that seek to empower people and answer important questions about what it means to be human.” In a series of articles published by James Odato in the Albany Times Union, NXIVM’s practices were questioned and the group was compared to a cult.

A criminal complaint charging Raniere, 57, with sex trafficking alleges that he made female followers have sex with him and do menial chores for masters. The women were reportedly forced to stay quiet about the arrangement or they would be publicly humiliated.

  22. John Paul Stevens’ Anti-Second Amendment Hysteria
A chilling reminder of the importance of judicial appointments.
    March 28, 2018
    Joseph Klein

Former Associate Justice John Paul Stevens was a foe of any broad reading of the Second Amendment while he served on the U.S. Supreme Court. He dissented from the 2008 majority decision in the District of Columbia v. Heller case, which held that there was an individual right to bear arms. Mr. Stevens is now going even further in his retirement, writing an op-ed column for the New York Times entitled “John Paul Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment.”

Mr. Stevens is of the view that the Second Amendment is an artifact with no current beneficial purpose to serve. “Concern that a national standing army might pose a threat to the security of the separate states,” he wrote in his op-ed column, “led to the adoption of that amendment, which provides that ‘a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.’ Today that concern is a relic of the 18th century.”

In his op-ed column Mr. Steven sharply criticized the Heller decision, which he wrote “has provided the N.R.A. with a propaganda weapon of immense power.” Mr. Stevens added: “Overturning that decision via a constitutional amendment to get rid of the Second Amendment would be simple and would do more to weaken the N.R.A.’s ability to stymie legislative debate and block constructive gun control legislation than any other available option.”

Hizb-ut-Tahrir calls Jews “evil” and wants gays dead.

Abdul Rauf Khan is the Assistant Executive Director of the Islamic Circle of North America’s (ICNA) main humanitarian effort ICNA Relief and Secretary of both ICNA Florida and ICNA Relief Florida. Most of his social media postings are to tout ICNA projects. Still, other posts he has made showcase bigotry, bigots and Islamist movements beyond ICNA. This month, he chose to target homosexuals with a video produced by a group that promotes the internationally banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir. It is all a reflection of the extremism Khan and his outfit represent.

ICNA was founded in September 1968 as the American affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), South Asia’s largest Islamist group. JI’s militant wing, Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), owned the Pakistani compound where Osama bin Laden was living and eventually killed in. ICNA, itself, has been linked to terrorist financing and has used the internet to promote terror organizations, including Hezbollah, Hamas, al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

In November 2013, former ICNA Secretary General, Ashrafuzzaman Khan, was sentenced to death for his role in the murders of 18 people as a death squad leader during Bangladesh’s 1971 War of Independence. In July 2014, ICNA co-sponsored a pro-Hamas rally outside the Israeli Consulate, in downtown Miami, Florida, where rally goers repeatedly shouted, “We are Hamas,” “Let’s go Hamas,” and “Hamas kicked your ass.” Following the rally, the organizer of the event, Sofian Zakkout, wrote, in Arabic, above photos from the event, “Thank God, every day we conquer the American Jews like our conquests over the Jews of Israel!”

The Wolff ship sailed a while back. Fire and Fury sold lots of copies. But even some of the biggest Trump haters in the media were careful about taking it at face value. Here’s Michael Wolff explaining his tenuous relationship with the truth in the Vassar Review.

Solender: So would you call yourself a political journalist?

Wolff: No, never. I’m not a political journalist. I’m not, frankly, all that much interested in politics. I’m a writer. I’m barely a journalist, actually. I am a writer.

Solender: And you’ve covered other topics, right? You wrote for the Hollywood Reporter?

Wolff: Yes, I’m probably the most prolific journalist in the country. You know, millions upon millions upon millions of words.

Solender: So it’s not really about the subject as much as sort of telling the story and getting the truth out there?

Wolff: Well, even truth–I have no monopoly on the truth. Somebody at the [Columbia School of Journalism] called me the other day and asked if I could speak to their investigative journalism class. I said, ‘I would be delighted to but I know nothing about investigative journalism.’ I wouldn’t even know what that is. I am an observer: I investigate nothing. All I do is look and write what I see and what I hear, and my job–which has nothing to do with truth– is to take what I see and what I hear and write that in a way that readers can come as possible–as close as I came–to the experience of doing this. I want to be able to turn what I see into something that a reader says ‘oh, I see that too.’

  26. Armed Child Gangs Fight for ‘Quality’ Garbage in Socialist Venezuela

As Liliana picks lice from the tangled, thick hair of her boyfriend, Patricio, while they sit together on the sidewalk of a Caracas street, she’s also multi-tasking, keeping a watchful eye on her “family.” When a 10-year-old girl named Danianyeliz kneels down to drink water from a puddle, Liliana reproaches her, urging her to have a sip from a juice bottle they’ve just found in a garbage bag.

At 16, Liliana has become the mother figure for a gang of Venezuelan children and young adults called the Chacao, named after the neighborhood they’ve claimed as their territory. The 15 members, ranging in age from 10 to 23, work together to survive vicious fights for “quality” garbage in crumbling, shortage-plagued Venezuela. Their weapons are knives and sticks and machetes. The prize? Garbage that contains food good enough to eat.

Liliana has a quick, wide smile and goes by the nickname Caramelo. She takes charge of each day for the group, deciding how much food her “family” will consume and how much they will stash away for another day. She settles conflicts that flare up and gives a hug, a kiss or a pat on the back as needed.

  30. Claim: French Intelligence Agencies Do Not Have Manpower To Track Everyone on Terror Watchlists (breitbart, Mar 28, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/03/28/former-french-intelligence-official-agencies-manpower-track-watchlists/

“A former French intelligence official has admitted that the country cannot keep track of every individual on the terror watchlist due to a lack of resources and manpower following revelations that the Trebes attacker had been on the list.

Yves Trotignon, a former agent of the General Directorate for External Security (DGSE), said that the recent terror attack in Trebes showed the strains on intelligence services to monitor individuals on the country’s terror watchlist known as the “S-File”.

Radouane Lakdim, the 25-year-old Moroccan migrant behind the attack, had been on the watchlist since 2015, along with 25,000 others who range from sympathisers of radical Islamic ideology to those considered a terror attack threat, Trotignon said in an interview with L’Obs.

“In this sense, there are different scales – from 1 to 6 – of dangerousness: Radouane Lakdim was among the 4,000 classified ‘in the high end’, which groups together potentially dangerous individuals,” Trotignon said.

When asked why the intelligence agencies were not able to predict the attack, Trotignon said: “We do not have the human means to follow all these people,” adding that politicians needed to provide more funding to hire additional agents and make national security a higher priority.

Laurent Wauquiez, head of the conservative Republican party, recommended earlier this week that S-File individuals should be detained and foreigners on the list deported.

While Trotignon said that deportations could be possible, he was sceptical about detentions saying: “This is the gift dreamed of by jihadists: global confrontation. The detention camps in France do not evoke very glorious memories.”

“This will fuel hatred. Then, what the intelligence services know is that the more you put the pressure on the jihadists, the more they will change their procedures. We will find ourselves with people who are even better trained than those who would be locked up,” he added.

Many of the terror attacks in France since the Bataclan massacre in 2015 have been S-File members, while others, like last year’s knife attacker in Marseille, were not on any list.

In at least one case, a member of the S-File list was able to secure a job as a police officer despite having been under observation by the country’s domestic intelligence agency, the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI), since 2012.”

  32. Mauritania Expels Moroccan Journalist for Researching Slavery (moroccoworldnews, Mar 28, 2018)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2018/03/243295/mauritania-expels-moroccan-journalist-researching-slavery/

“Mauritanian authorities expelled Seif Kousmate, a Moroccan-French photojournalist, after detaining him for more than three days for conducting research on slavery in the country.

The Paris-based NGO, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), noted that the authorities made the arrest on March 20, at the border with Senegal, “from where he had planned to take a flight back to Morocco.”

The reporter was placed in police headquarters in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania.

The authorities seized the journalist’s laptop and mobile phone and arbitrarily “detained him for three days in Nouakchott, interrogating him, inter alia about his links with Biram Dah Abeid, a former presidential candidate and leader of the anti-slavery movement, who he interviewed in the course of his reporting,” added the NGO.

The journalist was deported from Mauritania after “starting a hunger strike” on March 24, and arrived in Morocco’s Casablanca on the same date.

The NGO contacted the journalist, who he said “he was initially suspected of terrorism.”

The Mauritanian authorities returned the journalist’s phone and laptop, but would not release “several memory cards containing photos he had taken.”

The journalist, however, told RSF that he still have several photos to complete his research report.

In September 2017, Mauritania prevented twelve anti-slavery activists from entering Mauritania.

The activists work with the Chicago-based Abolition Institute, an organization campaigning against alleged slavery in Mauritania.

RSF wrote that a French freelance journalist, Tiphaine, was ordered to leave Mauritania or face detention for investigating slavery in the country in April 2017.”
