  2. Trump Plans Expulsion of Russian Envoys Over U.K. Attack

President Donald Trump is preparing to expel dozens of Russian diplomats from the U.S. in response to the nerve-agent poisoning of a former Russian spy in the U.K., two people familiar with the matter said Saturday.

Trump agreed with the recommendation of advisers and the expulsions are likely to be announced on Monday, the people said, though they cautioned that Trump’s decision may not be final. Trump is prepared to act but first wants to be sure European allies will take similar steps against Russia, aides said.

U.S. officials are working through the weekend to develop a coordinated response with the Europeans, one of the people said, after British Prime Minister Theresa May this week rallied support for a tough rebuke.

As early as Monday, a number of European nations also are expected to expel Russian officials, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and the Czech Republic. France and Germany backed May’s call for tougher action, though their exact plans are less clear.

  3. Growing questions about CNN’s airport monopoly as network veers left

CNN’s ubiquitous presence in airports — where it broadcasts from thousands of screens to a captive audience of millions — is facing new scrutiny after the cable network’s hard left turn.

The CNN Airport network dates back to when CNN was known for straightforward news programming — and has been a fixture at airports since before competitors MSNBC and Fox News even existed. But critics are now asking if busy travelers should be subjected to CNN’s increasingly ideological programming — at gates, bars, food courts and baggage claims — which can include on-screen chyrons or subtitles that gleefully mock President Trump. Many travelers have even taken to Twitter and started online petitions to urge airports to change the channel.

  4. Venezuela hopes to tackle the world’s worst inflation by deleting zeros from its currency

CARACAS, Venezuela — Economic pledges may be par for the course in election campaigns, but in hyperinflationary Venezuela, the candidates’ dueling promises are going further, with the incumbent vowing to lop a few zeros off the currency, while his main challenger calls for the adoption of the U.S. dollar.

President Nicolás Maduro late Thursday briefly outlined his monetary rescue plan. In a country where a dozen eggs can cost 250,000 bolivars ($5) amid worsening inflation, he would chop three zeros off the currency — arguably bringing the price for those eggs down to 250.

“I ask you all for your prayers and support for the success of the monetary reconversion,” Maduro said in a televised event Thursday night.

The move came as Henri Falcon — a former governor running against Maduro in elections set for May — is proposing a far more radical fix. He wants to follow the path of countries such as Ecuador and Panama by dollarizing the Venezuelan economy. Doing so, he says, would prevent the printing of new bills — instantly constraining inflation.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2018/03/23/venezuela-hopes-to-tackle-the-worlds-worst-inflation-by-deleting-zeros-from-its-currency/?utm_term=.d371d6ecca71

Richard: A lot of pseudo economists are about to discover that their pet idea on how to return the US Dollar to strength is not going to work. for this idea to work the citizens of Venezuela (or the US) would have to be stupid. The people planning this think the people won’t realize that the money is still the same, the economic conditions that caused the inflation are still the same the only thing that would have changed is the look of the currency. Yes the prices would seem to drop (for a while) but with the economic policies and conditions unchanged the inflation would continue and it wouldn’t be long before the new currency would be inflated like the old currency.

  5. Italian Populists Sideline Mainstream as They Vie for Premiership

After outmaneuvering establishment parties to emerge as lead negotiators in Italy’s search for a new government, the populist pair Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini seek to win enough support this week to justify their rival claims for the premiership.

Di Maio of the Five Star Movement and Salvini of the anti-migrant League, each short of a majority after the March 4 general elections, worked together to successfully sideline both Salvini’s center-right ally Silvio Berlusconi and the ruling Democratic Party in votes for parliamentary speakers.

  6. Freak weather: Orange snowstorm submerges tourist resorts with eerie ‘apocalyptic’ scenes
A FREAK WEATHER incident has struck at least four countries, turning white snow into an eerie orange shade that has left residents terrified about the cause.
    By Oli Smith

Cities around Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania have all reported the bizarre orange snow phenomenon, videos of which have quickly gone viral.

Tourist destinations, including ski resorts, have been blanketed by the orange snow, which has turned snowy mountains into sand dunes.

Several witnesses compared the scene to an “apocalyptic scenario” or something that resembled the surface of Mars.

  7. China air force drills again in South China Sea, Western Pacific

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s air force has held another round of drills in the disputed South China Sea and the Western Pacific after passing though Japan’s southern islands, the air force said on Sunday, calling such exercises the best preparation for war.

China is in the midst of an ambitious military modernization program overseen by President Xi Jinping with a heavy focus on its air force and navy, from building stealth fighters to adding aircraft carriers.

China insists it has no hostile intent, but its sabre-rattling in the busy South China Sea waterway, and around Taiwan, has touched a nerve in the region and in Washington.

In a statement, the air force said H-6K bombers and Su-30 and Su-35 fighters, among other aircraft, carried out combat patrols over the South China Sea and exercises in the Western Pacific after passing over the Miyako Strait, which lies between two southern Japanese islands.

It did not say when the exercises took place nor specify the parts of the South China Sea or the Western Pacific.

  8. Russia denies aiding Afghan Taliban in wake of U.S. general’s comments

KABUL (Reuters) – Russia has rejected comments by NATO’s top commander in Afghanistan that it has been supporting and even supplying weapons to the Taliban, in a clash of words that underlines growing tension over Moscow’s involvement in the conflict.

In an interview with the BBC last week, General John Nicholson said that Russia had been acting to undermine U.S. efforts in Afghanistan despite shared interests in fighting terrorism and narcotics, with indications that Moscow was providing financial support and even arms.

“We’ve had weapons brought to this headquarters and given to us by Afghan leaders and said this was given by the Russians to the Taliban,” he said.

A statement from the Russian embassy in Kabul dismissed the comments as “idle gossip”, repeating previous denials by Russian officials.

“Once again, we insist that such statements are absolutely baseless and appeal to officials not to talk nonsense,” the embassy said.

  9. Japan’s Abe apologizes amid cronyism scandal, vows to revise constitution

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, his ratings in a slump amid a suspected cronyism scandal and cover-up, apologized again on Sunday for causing anxiety and loss of confidence in his government.

Protesters urged Abe to resign, as riot police kept tight security outside the venue of his ruling party’s annual convention, at which the premier stressed his intention to revise Japan’s pacifist post-war, U.S.-drafted constitution.

Abe faces his biggest political crisis since taking office in December 2012 as suspicions swirl about a sale of state-owned land at a huge discount to a nationalist school operator with ties to his wife.

“This problem has shaken the people’s confidence in the administration,” Abe told the convention. “As head of the government, I keenly feel my responsibility and would like to deeply apologize to the people.”

  10. March for Our Lives: Khmer Rouge, or just Astro Turf?
    By J.E. Dyer March 25, 2018

We knew to expect a certain lack of gravitas in the “March for Our Lives” on 24 March, after seeing Parkland survivor-activist David Hogg triggered by the decree (which Howard Portnoy recorded earlier) that students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School would carry only clear backpacks, to prevent smuggling things into the school.

Young Mr. Hogg seemed shocked at the idea that a whole lot of innocent people should be punished with a draconian security crackdown for what one criminal did.

But that, of course, is exactly his argument about what is erroneously called “gun control”: that millions of law-abiding citizens should have their rights eroded and put at risk because of what one criminal did. So things were bound to go downhill from there.

And go downhill they did. I observed earlier today that the big, highly orchestrated turnout in the Washington, D.C. march on Saturday, with the “fake homemade” signs, the many aging leftists on-hand, and the pre-packaged chants and talking points, was clearly an Astro Turf operation.

(Oh, and the numerous charter buses.)

    https://libertyunyielding.com/2018/03/25/march-lives-khmer-rouge-just-astro-turf/

    • It is too early to tell if this is the beginning of either the Khmer Rouge, the Cultural Revolution or just astro turf.

What this is could go either way, full revolution of descend into nothing. I am praying for the latter but given what has happened over the last two years there is a nagging doubt that it will cool down and become just one more astroturfed demonstration.

Like the khmer Rouge and the Cultural Revolution elements of the protesters are out to erase our entire history to replace it with their BS. The anger in Hoggs face is frightening it shows a person who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals he will tear down the rule of law and all civilized values to force his ideas down out throats. The question is will his backers keep funding him and will he gain enough followers to be dangerous.

It is too early to say if he is dangerous or not, it is time to watch what is happening because this may be another sign of a looming civil war.

      • I wish you were right, and that it was too soon to tell…

However, the Soros involvement is significant. This is not a grassroots, organic movement but an artfully and intentionally whipped up mob.

Trump has upset the Globalists’ plans and this is how they are striking back: mobilizing the under-educated and brain-washed post-modern, post-fact, post-logic youth to anger and rage in which they will smash, smash, smash…

        • No its not, but instead of keeping on gun control the speakers veered off into social justice issues. Issues that turn most people off, this may prevent the movement from growing into a dangerous group. But Soros and the other money men and the true organizers of the event may take him aside and make him stick to the script.

  11. The myth of excessive force: What really happens in a police shooting
By Howard Portnoy March 24, 2018

Another unarmed black male was felled in a hail of police bullets last Sunday, bringing once again from the black community and the Left claims of excessive police force. After the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in 2012, a second low-profile case — the shooting of 18-year-old Ramarley Graham — prompted actor Samuel L. Jackson to declare it was “open season” on young black men.

Now, in the wake of the shooting of 22-year-old Stephon Clark in Sacramento, the same battle cries are echoing. Black Lives Matter is back in the news, demanding not answers but retaliation against the two officers who fired a total of 20 shots at Clark, killing him. The group’s assumption is that the explanation for the shooting is already known — it is open season again — and all that awaits is “justice,” meaning a speedy trial and two guilty verdicts.

BLM has also decided in advance that if the two cops are acquitted, as has happened in so many cases, that will just prove that the system is biased against blacks.

That was certainly the assumption made in the 1999 killing of 22-year-old Guinean refugee Amadou Diallo, who was shot by NYPD plainclothesmen 41 times.

    https://libertyunyielding.com/2018/03/24/another-police-shooting-unarmed-black-male-reignites-myth-excessive-force/

    • Part of the myth of excessive force is due to the anti police, anti gun groups that lobby for and gain a ban on some police forces using expanding nose bullets. The Full Metal Jackets (dictated to the military by the Geneva Convention) reduce the stopping power of the bullets. This causes lack of faith in the weapons that they are issued, this lack of faith causes the police to resort to open fire sooner. Once they are shooting they continue shooting until the preceived threat is removed, which means that they very quickly empty their weapons into the suspect. We are talking about reality here not the movies, someone isn’t shot once and falls unless their spine is severed or it is a head shot. A shot to the body can take as much as 5 minutes to incapacitate the suspect.

For the non gun people it takes much less then 30 seconds to empty a 15 round 9mm handgun, even less time if they are using the more effective 40 auto or 45 auto.

        • Of course, it wasn’t.
Anyone who wants to know more about Japanese during WW II should also read on Kempeitai, Japan equivalent to gestapo.

          • I like the modern Japanese culture and think there is a lot to admire but I also know that historically there is a lot in Japanese history to be scared of. There are several good books on the Rape of Nanking, read one of more of them and pay attention to the two LTs that held daily contests to see how many people they could kill with swords. The scores were run daily in the Japanese papers like it was a series ol games.

        • No it wasn’t, it was the level of force needed to prevent 1 million dead allies and the total destruction of the Japanese Culture. A lot of the men scheduled for the invasion of Hokkaido felt the Angle of Death flying over them. Then the two bombs dropped and they all thanked God for sparing their lives.

  14. UK Accused of Secretly Delivering Arms to Middle East – Reports (sputniknews, Mar 25, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201803251062881432-uk-accused-secretly-delivering-arms-middle-east/

“According to the research by Middle East Eye (MEE) news portal, the UK government has increased the use of secretive “open licenses” to boost weapons’ exports to North Africa and the Middle East.

The United Kingdom has been accused of using opaque open licenses to endorse arms sales to Middle Eastern states, MEE revealed. The figures compiled by Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) for MEE demonstrated that the government had envisaged a 22 percent hike in the use of those licenses to increase arms deliveries, including assault rifles to Turkey in 2016 and acoustic riot control devices to Egypt in 2015.

Beyond Turkey and Egypt, arms exports under open licensing systems were approved for Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Bahrain, Algeria, Iraq and Jordan.

    Turkey

The figures show that 135 licenses, including those for drones and tank components, machine guns, sniper rifles, aircraft components and gun mounting, were granted to Ankara; the export of which is thought to be linked to a $140 million fighter jet development deal signed by UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in January 2017.

Moreover, there is a growing concern that Turkey is using weapons and components manufactured in Britain in its offensive on the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Syria’s Afrin, which has resulted in displacement of tens of thousands of people and nearly 300 civilian deaths. Ankara considers the YPG to be affiliated with the Kurdistan’s Workers’ Party (PKK), regarded by Turkey as a terrorist group.

    Gulf States

The program covers open licenses for exports of military-grade electronic equipment and components for military aircraft to the United Arab Emirates (UAE); the figures suggest 136 licenses have been granted to the UAE since 2013.

Saudi Arabia appeared to be the larger recipient of arms under secretive open licenses; according to MEE, the use of approvals for weaponry export, including key parts for jets conducting strikes in Yemen, had risen by 75 percent last month.

The Gulf States are involved in the Saudi-led aerial bombardment of Houthi rebels in Yemen, which has cost thousands of civilian lives.

Qatar has witnessed a 150 percent increase in open licenses endorsed since 2013, with assault rifles, body armor, small arms ammunition and military radar equipment being approved…”

    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201803251062881221-yemen-houthis-coalition-call-peace/

“The Supreme Political Council of Ansar Allah, the movement of the Houthi rebels, has called for the reconciliation of all Yemenis, including those who are fighting today on the side of the coalition led by Saudi Arabia, according to the Houthi statement.

“Choosing peace may not be in the plans of the enemy coalition, but we must not give up after all the sacrifices. We need to strive for inner reconciliation and offer our hands to Yemenis who fight with them to protect the oppressed people and alleviate their suffering,” the Houthis’ Ansarullah political council chief, Saleh al-Samad said in a statement.

The Houthi chief said that Yemen’s enemies in Riyadh are profiting from the war and spend millions daily to maintain hostilities.

Regional UNICEF director Geert Cappelaere in the UN children’s agency has announced that the number of severely malnourished children in Yemen has doubled in three years of civil war, from 200,000 in 2015 and that an additional half a million boys and girls are unable go to school.

Cappelaere says both sides have blocked or held back humanitarian aid shipments, including solar equipment and fuel needed to improve access to clean water and fight an outbreak of cholera and diarrhea that affected more than one million Yemenis last year…”

  16. Military launch manhunt amid fears ‘potential bomber’ will attack tourists in Rome (express, Mar 25, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/936713/Italy-terror-Rome-Mathlouthi-Atef-Tunisia-police-updates-latest-news

“THE Italian military has launched a manhunt for a suspected Islamist terrorist over fears he could launch a horrific attack on tourists in Rome.

Counter-terror officials are hunting for Mathlouthi Atef, 42, after he was flagged up as a “possible bomber”, according to local media.

A mugshot of the Tunisian suspect has been circulated over fears he could strike bars, train stations and shopping centres in Rome.

The alert came after the Italian embassy in Tunisia’s capital, Tunis, received an anonymous letter claiming a man was “ready to attack the centre of Rome”.

The chilling threat was “considered reliable”, according to Rome-based newspaper Il Corriere della Citta.

Another newspaper, Il Giornale, reported that Atef is already known to police for drug dealing and “other minor crimes”.

Italy’s military police force, known as the carabinieri, declined to comment on the possible terror threat.

The Foreign Office website warns that “terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Italy” and warns British tourists to be vigilant.

It adds: “Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreigners. There are isolated cases of domestic terrorism.

“Attacks carried out by the extreme left-wing and secessionist groups have generally been aimed at official Italian targets, mainly in the form of small bombs and incendiary devices.

“The Italian authorities have made a number of arrests of individuals with links to Islamic State (ISIS) and other extremist groups.

There is a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria.””

It is sad but possibly to be expected that many Palestinian Christians – who are constantly under threat but have not been killed or expelled – identify closely with the cause of their Muslim fellows as they engage in often violent “resistance” to Israel and the limited Israeli “occupation” of the West Bank (Judaea and Samaria). Christians may have a long history in Syria and Palestine, but the earliest Christians, including Christ, were, of course, Jews. According to Christianity Today:

  26. The Real Cost of Afrin

    by Amir Taheri
    March 25, 2018 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12092/turkey-afrin-cost

With the Turkish flag hoisted on top of the municipal building in Afrin the other day, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his supporters are in triumphal mood.

In a sense they have the right to be, as this is the first time in almost 100 years that Turkey has scored a military victory against an adversary ready to fight. (Turkey’s occupation of part of Cyprus in 1974 was achieved without major fighting.)

However, the euphoria inspired by what Erdogan terms “an historic victory” would have to be tempered by reality. That NATO’s largest army in Europe should win a war against a ragtag band of lightly armed Kurds is no surprise. This is neither Alp Arsalan, after Malazegrd, nor Sultan Muhammad Fatih after capturing Byzantium.

The capture of Afrin represents a 19th century solution for a 21st century problem that Turkey faces.

Judging by official statements from Ankara, Erdogan is trying to create what 19th century strategists termed a cordon sanitaire or a glacis, supposedly to protect Turkey against incursions by Kurdish “terrorists”.

However, military history, at least since the debacle of the Maginot Line enterprise in 1939, shows that such concepts as cordon sanitaire and glacis are no longer relevant to modern warfare, especially of the asymmetric kind to which Turkey remains vulnerable.
