“One of the most frightening things about Pakistan’s blasphemy law is that the simplest act can spiral into charges that can bring the death penalty. In the case of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman, it started when she brought water to her fellow women workers on a farm.
On that hot day in 2009, Bibi had a sip from the same container and some of the Muslim women became angry that a Christian had drunk from the same water. They demanded she convert, she refused. Five days later, a mob accused her of blasphemy. She was convicted and sentenced to death. Later this month, the Supreme Court is expected to hear her appeal.
Pakistan is under new international pressure to curb Islamic extremism, and activists at home say one place to start is by changing its blasphemy law.
In January, the U.S. State Department cited the law as one of the reasons as it put Pakistan on a watch list of countries accused of “severe violations of religious freedoms.”
The move came as the Trump administration is ratcheting up pressure on Islamabad, freezing security aid until it cracks down on militant networks operating from its soil to carry out attacks in Afghanistan. Moreover, the Financial Action Task Force, an intergovernmental agency that combats money laundering and terror financing, has given Pakistan until June to show how it will tackle radicalism or else be put on a black list, a step that could hurt its international financial ties.
Opponents of the blasphemy law say it has turned into a force corroding Pakistani society, feeding extremism, implicating the justice system in radicalism and ultimately undermining rule of law.
Often the law is used to punish rivals in personal feuds. Just making an accusation is enough to convince neighbors or others in the community that the defendant is guilty and must be punished, whipping up a vengeful anger even if the courts find the accused innocent. Authorities are often too afraid to push back against the public fury. In at least one case, officials have kept a man acquitted of blasphemy in prison, fearing riots if he is freed.
Militant groups have embraced the law, using it to cultivate support and attack those who try to break their power.
“It has become much more dangerous over the last few years. The reason is that they have created a sense of fear,” said Zahid Hussain, a political analyst and the author of two books on militancy in Pakistan. “It has become a ready tool not only against non-Muslims, but also against Muslims, who do not agree with their world view.”
According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, 71 countries have blasphemy laws — around a quarter of them are in the Middle East and North Africa and around a fifth are European countries, though enforcement and punishment varies.
Pakistan is one of the most ferocious enforcers.
At least 1,472 people were charged under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws between 1987 and 2016, according to statistics collected by the Center for Social Justice, a Lahore-based advocacy group. Of those, 730 were Muslims, 501 were Ahmedis — a sect that is reviled by mainstream Muslims as heretics — while 205 were Christians and 26 were Hindus. The center said it didn’t know the religion of the final 10 because they were killed by vigilantes before they could get their day in court.
While Pakistan’s law carries the death penalty and offenders have been sentenced to death, so far no one has ever been executed.
A key test will come when Pakistan’s Supreme Court rules on the case of Aasia, whose world was turned upside down after a mob of villagers accused her of insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad after the water incident.
Aasia’s case even reached the Vatican, where Pope Francis last month met with her husband, Ashiq Masih, and daughter Eisham, who traveled to Rome to witness the Colosseum being bathed in red light in a sign of solidarity with persecuted Christians around the world.
During the emotional encounter, Eisham gave the pope a kiss that she said her mother asked her to deliver.
“The blasphemy law is misused in Pakistan,” Masih told The Associated Press in a rare interview. “It has nothing to do with the Holy Prophet or Islam, it is just to settle grudges.”
He spoke at a small Christian-run school in Lahore which Eisham and a younger, disabled daughter, attend. The school’s principal and owner, Joseph Nadeem, has become a guardian to Masih and his children.
Masih, who said his wife was innocent, points to his arm where a bullet struck him, fired by a protester outraged with his wife’s alleged crime. He never lives in one location too long, because it is potentially dangerous, he said.
Aasia’s lawyer, Saiful Malook fears the Supreme Court will buckle to extremists’ pressure and reject his client’s appeal when it hears it later this month. Her only hope in that case would be a presidential pardon, he said.
Just defending her is dangerous. Malook’s home in Lahore is protected by police. He also is a target because he prosecuted Mumtaz Qadri, the elite police guard who killed Punjab’s provincial governor, Salman Taseer, in 2011, after Taseer defended Aasia Bibi and criticized the misuse of the blasphemy law.
Qadri was hanged for his crime, but he has since become a martyr to millions, who make a pilgrimage to a shrine erected in his name by his family outside the federal capital. Giant posters of Qadri emblazon buildings not far from the school where The AP interviewed Aasia Bibi’s husband.
Fear of being connected with a blasphemy case is so strong that Nasreen Abid, a Christian woman, moved out of earshot of others and whispered as she told the AP her family’s story. She spoke outside Lahore’s Mayo Hospital, where she was waiting to learn the condition of her son, Sajjid, who suffered multiple injuries, including two broken legs, after he jumped from a third-story window of a police investigation unit.
She said the police called in Sajjid after his cousin, Patras Masih, was arrested on accusations of sharing a blasphemous picture on Facebook. Police wanted to check Sajjid’s phone but found nothing, said his mother.
Then police stripped Sajjid and his cousin, taunted them and told them to have sex with each other, she said. Instead, her son flung himself out the window. Police say they are investigating the incident.
“There shouldn’t be this law,” Abid said. “Now look at us. We shouldn’t be treated like this. We are citizens of Pakistan. We are being treated wrongly because we are poor and we are weak.”
In Jand Wala Saroo, a small village near Pakistan’s border with India, Razia Bibi wonders whether she will ever again see her brother, Muhammad Mansha.
Mansha spent nine years in jail accused of blasphemy until the Supreme Court acquitted him last year, saying the evidence was insufficient. But he remains imprisoned because authorities say his release would start a riot in the village.
“I pray the village will forgive him, but no one wants him back here,” Razia said, sitting on a traditional rope bed surrounded by her many children. “All the villagers are agreed. He shouldn’t come back. Some even said they would kill him.”
Two local men accused Mansha of destroying pages of the Quran at a mosque, though neither witnessed the alleged act. The only purported witness was a child who can neither hear nor speak.
One of the complainants, Allah Ditta Nadeem, told the AP he was at home when people came and told him what had happened. He said he then went to the mosque, where the child explained with hand gestures. Still, Nadeem said he was convinced of Mansha’s guilt.
Hussain, the analyst and author, said most Pakistani politicians privately acknowledge the need to change the law, but are too afraid. Also they often use religious groups when they need them to win elections.
“Neither the military nor the civilian government has a clear strategy how to deal with extremism or militancy in this country,” said Hussain. “For me this is the biggest existential threat to Pakistan because if extremism is not controlled or contained . . . it is going to destroy the social fabric of this country.””

Afghanistan: IS-claimed suicide blast kills at least nine in Kabul
At least nine people were killed and at least seven more injured after a suicide attack targeting a Shia Hazara gathering in Kabul on Friday, officials said.
A suicide bomber blew himself up after being stopped at a checkpoint in Kabul’s al-Zahra neighbourhood, a deputy interior spokesperson said. The bomber was reportedly targeting a gathering commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the death of Abdul Ali Mazari, a former leader of the mostly Shia Hazara community.
The attack was claimed by the so-called Islamic State on an IS-affiliated website.

Caracas, Venezuela, was the most dangerous capital city in the world in 2017, according to a new study that underscores how Latin America remains one of the bloodiest swaths of the planet.
According to Mexico’s Citizens Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice, 43 of the world’s 50 most violent cities were in Latin America and the Caribbean, with Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela leading the list.
Los Cabos, Mexico, topped the annual ranking with a murder rate of 111.3 per 100,000 residents. But Caracas — just one of five capital cities on the list — was in a close second place with 111.2 murders per 100,000 residents.
The 10th annual ranking was released this week and measures murder rates in cities with more than 300,000 people.

Last week, the South African parliament voted to allow the seizure of land from white farmers without compensation. The motion was motivated primarily by the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Party, Julius Malema.
During an EFF campaign speech Sunday, Malema cranked up the hate and hostilities toward South African whites, saying that his party had decided to remove the mayor of Port Elizabeth because he “is a white man.” He encouraged his followers to “go after the white man” and to cut “the throat of whiteness.”

Pres. Trump to Meet Kim Jong Un By May
President Trump announces he’s cautiously optimistic, as he agrees to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
In a tweet this Thursday, the president said great progress is being made, but sanctions will remain in place until an agreement is reached.
His statement came after South Korean officials met with the President and his national security team, and delivered a message from North Korea’s leader.
That message included an invitation to meet face-to-face and a pledge to suspend nuclear missile testing.
South Korea’s National Security Adviser Chung Eui-Yong praised the president’s leadership and maximum sustained pressure campaign.
He said the leaders will meet by May for talks to achieve permanent denuclearization.
“I told President Trump that in our meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he is committed to denuclearization,” said Chung. Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests. He understands that the routine joint military exercises between the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue. And he expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible.”
He went on to say both Koreas have agreed to hold a leadership summit in late April.
News of the announcement came when President Trump made his first ever appearance in the White House press briefing room and first spoke to One America News.

A few media outlets have picked up on a brief disclosure from Jeff Sessions, in an interview with Fox News’ Shannon Bream this week, that he has apparently already appointed someone other than the Justice Department Inspector General, Michael Horowitz, to conduct an investigation of FISA surveillance abuses in the Obama administration.

“Two “vulnerable” 14-year-old girls who were living in a care home were groomed, given drugs and alcohol, and were raped over a two-year period by a gang of ten men, a court has heard.
Opening the prosecutor’s case at Bradford Crown Court, Kama Melly QC told the jury that both girls were in the care of the state at the time, describing them as “sadly ripe and vulnerable to manipulation”.
“Girls in care don’t always see the exploitation and manipulation but that does not mean the exploitation was not occurring,” Ms. Melly added.
The prosecution alleged that one victim had run away from the home with a female friend, both aged 14, and were then approached by one of the defendants in a car who began grooming them for sex, reports the Telegraph & Argus.
Ms. Melly then detailed that one girl was taken to meet other men who used “fear” and “manipulation” to “satisfy their sexual desires”.
The following charges relate to alleged abuse committed between July 2009 and July 2011:
Saeed Akhtar, 54, Bradford, denies two charges of causing or inciting child prostitution and one charge of rape.
Naveed Akhtar, 42, Bradford, denies three charges of rape.
Izar Hussain, 31, Bradford, denies three charges of rape, and an additional allegation of attempted rape.

Saudi Crown Prince commits to interfaith tolerance, says Anglican church
LONDON: Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met the head of the Anglican church in London on Thursday, promising to promote interfaith dialogue as part of his domestic reforms, the British faith leader’s office said.
Prince Mohammed is making an official visit to London to promote Saudi Arabia as a tolerant, modernising economy and build a wider new trade and investment relationship with Britain a long-term defence and security ally.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion of millions of Christians globally, received the crown prince at Lambeth Palace in central London, where the two talked for an hour.
“The Crown Prince made a strong commitment to promote the flourishing of those of different faith traditions, and to interfaith dialogue within the Kingdom and beyond,” a statement from Lambeth Palace said.
“The Archbishop shared his concern about limits placed on Christian worship in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and highlighted the importance for leaders of all faiths to support freedom of religion or belief, drawing on the experience of the UK.”
The two men viewed a selection of early texts from the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths, including fragments of a Koran manuscript found in a Birmingham University library in 2015, which are thought to be among the world’s oldest.
Welby also “voiced his distress” at the humanitarian situation in Yemen, the statement said.
A Saudi-led coalition is fighting a war in Yemen in which 10,000 people have died and 8.3 million people have been left dependent on food aid. Protests over the Yemen war have jarred with a warm welcome from the British government during the visit to London.
On Wednesday Prince Mohammed met Queen Elizabeth for lunch and later agreed to boost trade ties by 65 billion pounds ($90.30 billion) in a meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May.
Earlier this week, Prince Mohammed met Coptic Pope Tawadros II at Cairo’s largest Coptic cathedral, as the Gulf Arab kingdom tries to shed its reputation as a global exporter of an ultra-conservative brand of Islam which critics say has inspired Islamist militants worldwide.
Promoting a more moderate form of Islam is one of the more ambitious promises made by Prince Mohammed under plans to transform Saudi and reduce its reliance on oil.

Citizen journalist and former leader of the English Defence League Tommy Robinson has released a video of himself defending his camera crew against an attempted attack by a migrant in Italy.
Robinson — who was in the country covering the Italian elections — explains in his video that he wanted to document the area in which journalist Francesca Parisella of Matrix Channel 5 was attacked live on air in early 2017.
“I tried to start digging deeper into Italy’s spate of high-profile, migrant attacks,” he tells the camera, before sharing the footage of what happened to him in the neighbourhood around Rome’s Central Station.
The video shows an altercation between Robinson and a migrant man who protests his presence in the area.
“I’ll get him,” the man is heard to say about Robinson’s cameraman, to which Robinson replies, “I’ll put you to sleep”.
Several minutes later, the pair are still arguing on the street, when the man approaches Robinson — who has his back turned — with his arms raised, shouting.
At that point, Robinson cycles around landing a right hook to the man’s cheek, sending him sprawling on the bonnet of a car.
Asked for comment, Robinson told Breitbart London: “While I was filming a report in a no go zone a group of migrants tried to attack my camera crew. They were screaming abuse, coming at the camera repeatedly and threatening to kill me. I was forced to act to defend my film crew. in this situation the mainstream media would have preferred I let him kill me”.
Journalists have been attacked a number of times across Europe in recent years, with multiple incidents occurring in Sweden alone.

CNN admitted in a report on March 6, 2018, that a Georgia town requiring gun ownership has only seen one murder in six years and maintains a violent crime rate of less than two percent.
CNN reports that Kennesaw, Georgia, adopted an ordinance in 1982 requiring the head of every household to “maintain a firearm.”
CNN suggested the law requiring gun ownership is not actually enforced, but it simultaneously reported that the town of Kennesaw has only witnessed one murder in the past six years. In other words, just the common knowledge that guns are in the hands of law-abiding citizens appears to restrain the actions of criminals.
Kennesaw Police Department Lt. Craig Graydon said, “It was meant to be kind of a crime deterrent.”

Following Delta Air Lines’ decision to cut its business ties with the National Rifle Association, Georgia state legislators ended the company’s jet fuel tax reductions. Now, the state of Florida is following Georgia’s lead and is planning on doing the same.
Politico reports Florida lawmakers are also going to try to rebid a state rental car contract that Enterprise currently has after it announced it will no longer offer discounts to NRA members.
“We would do this to any company that wants to engage against political speech, whether it’s against the NRA or Planned Parenthood,” Republican state Rep. Blaise Ingoglia said. “Anyone can engage in political speech, but we have a duty to watch and make sure government money doesn’t underwrite it.”
NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer told Politico she is pleased to see state lawmakers take action: “Taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be used to benefit businesses who discriminate against a segment of the taxpayers.”

The Trump administration launched a long overdue legal assault this week on grotesquely unconstitutional new state laws in California that punish compliance with federal immigration laws and provide legal cover for state and local officials to continue brazenly flouting immigration laws and obstructing federal agents trying to enforce them.
Under the longstanding doctrine in American constitutional law known as “dual sovereignty,” states cannot be compelled to enforce federal immigration laws, but they are obliged not to hinder their enforcement. The so-called sanctuary cities that form the bulk of the sanctuary movement really ought to be called traitor cities because they are in open rebellion against the United States, just like the slave states that seceded from the Union before the Civil War.
The sanctuary movement gave illegal aliens permission to rob, rape, and murder Americans by, among other things, stigmatizing immigration enforcement. Some left-wingers use the dreadful euphemism “civil liberties safe zones” to describe sanctuary jurisdictions. The phrase deliberately blurs the distinction between citizens and non-citizens by implying illegal aliens somehow possess a civil right to be present in the U.S.
“Immigration law “is the province of the federal government” and while there may be “a wide variety of political opinions out there on immigration,” the law is on “the books and its purpose is clear,” U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions told law enforcement officers attending the California Peace Officers Association’s 26th Annual Law Enforcement Legislative Day on Wednesday in the state capital of Sacramento.

In the ‘12 election debates, Obama had breezily dismissed Romney’s suggestion that Russia was the leading geopolitical threat. “You said Russia. Not al Qaeda. You said Russia,” he sneered. “And the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back, because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.”
Obama was nearly right.
Russia is a serious geopolitical threat, but despite Putin’s imperial ambitions and the malicious actions of a regime run by former KGB operatives, it falls far behind the threat posed by the People’s Republic of China. The Cold War is over and Russia lost. That may be of small comfort to Ukraine or Georgia, and the other former subject nations of the Soviet Union that it threatens, but it’s no real threat to us.
China isn’t our leading geopolitical foe either.

False Claims about Israeli Expropriation of Church Land
Recent news stories repeated without challenge a false claim by Jerusalem church officials that a shelved Israeli bill would have allowed for the expropriation of church land. They charged Israel with implementing measures akin to Nazi-era Nuremberg laws against Jews.
The bill, whose consideration was postponed after the claim, would have applied to church land sold to private developers since 2010. In other words, it would only apply to properties that no longer belong to the church. The aim of the bill was to protect homeowners against the possibility that private companies will not extend their leases on land on which their houses or apartments stand.

Talking about the prohibition of homosexuality in Islam, Dr. Nakshawani, a British-Iraqi Islamic historian, lecturer, and author, who now serves as the Imam Ali Chair of Shia studies at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut,said that a non-Muslim has every right to question why we have such beliefs, as long as it is done in a respectful manner.
“If I live in Canada,” he said, “every Canadian has a right to object or to question some of my beliefs as a Muslim. That is not Islamophobia. That is critical thinking.”
Criticizing Islam because of the Quranic verse that calls to “kill disbelievers wherever you see them” was legitimate, he said, as long as it is in the context of a meaning and respectful debate. Similarly, objections to the niqab are not Islamophobic, said Dr. Nakshawani, pointing out that wearing it was not obligatory in Islam and calling to have some respect for the laws of the country.
Dr. Nakshawani criticized Muslims who take advantage of the social system, scamming the government for disability pensions or unemployment benefits. Such conduct, he said, promotes Islamophobia, adding that: “The Emir of the Believers would be proud of countries like [Canada].”
Dr. Nakshawani went on to talk about Wahhabi Salafis, calling them “the most disgusting Muslims you’ll find” – “living in government [housing] and preaching that the government is Satan.”
Dr. Nakshawani criticized the media outlets for their role in propagating the negative image of Muslims because this is the image that “sells.” Of course you will have terrorism attacks, he said, because you are playing a narrative that causes this. “When you look at who represents Islam on some of these media outlets, all of them look like [they are] from the cast of ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’… and can barely speak English.”
The lecture, which was part of a series, was posted on the ACIC YouTube channel on September 30, 2017.

DNC Chair Caught Doctoring Fundraising Numbers
‘Meant to say we raised more money in January than we had in any January since 2012…’
(The Western Journal) Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez has been caught in a lie about the DNC’s fundraising.
“We raised more money in January, for instance, of 2018 than any January in our history,” Perez said in an interview with C-Span. “So if the question is, ‘Do we have enough money to implement our game plan?’ Absolutely.”
The Washington Post decided to fact check Perez’s statement, and found it to be entirely wrong.
According to their most recent filing with the Federal Election Commission, the DNC raised $6 million this past January.
“That was below what it raised in January 2014 ($6.6 million), January 2012 ($13.2 million), January 2011 ($7.1 million) and January 2010 ($9.1 million),” The Post reported.
DNC spokesman Michael Tyler said that Perez “meant to say we raised more money in January than we had in any January since 2012.”
The DNC has also changed how they are counting the amount of money raised.

DOJ Says Atty. Gen. Used Alias to Conduct Official Business to Protect Security, Privacy
Illustrating how government hides information from the American public, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch used a fake name to conduct official Department of Justice (DOJ) business in agency emails obtained by Judicial Watch. As the nation’s chief law enforcement officer Lynch, Barack Obama’s second attorney general, skirted public-records laws by using the alias Elizabeth Carlisle in emails she sent from her official DOJ account. In the records provided to Judicial Watch, the DOJ explains it as necessary to “protect her security and privacy and enable her to conduct Department business efficiently via email.”
This begs the question of how many other government officials use fake names and whether those aliases are searched when agencies process Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Besides Lynch, we have only discovered the use of such aliases among government operatives to conduct official business at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Obama’s EPA administrator, Lisa Jackson, famously used the alias Richard Windsor in a government email account to conduct official business and communicate with staff. Jackson even took required EPA computer training under the fake identity with the handle Windsor.Richard@epa.gov. She eventually resigned over the scandal, which brought to light the agency’s violations of federal open-records laws.
In Lynch’s case, Judicial Watch requested the records as part of an investigation into the Obama administration’s involvement in a United Nation’s international law enforcement coalition called Strong Cities Network (SCN). The purported mission of the global coalition was to build social cohesion and community resilience to counter violent extremism. The DOJ masterminded the agreement and Americans found out about the U.S.’s participation when Lynch announced it during a U.N. speech on September 29, 2015. Lynch referred to SCN as a “truly groundbreaking endeavor” and assured the notoriously corrupt world body that the Obama administration was deeply committed to the new initiative. “The government of the United States is fully invested in this collaborative approach and we have seen the value of empowering local communities by promoting initiatives they design and lead themselves,” Lynch said.

YOUNTVILLE, Calif. – A man wearing body armor and armed with an automatic weapon stormed into a Napa County veterans home Friday morning and has taken at least three people hostage, according to reports.
Law enforcement from the Napa County, Marin and the California Highway Patrol have surrounded the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, which is the largest veterans’ residence community in the United States.
Officer John Fransen with the CHP confirmed that shots have been fired. He did not say whether they have confirmed any injuries.
Around 10:30 a.m. Friday, the Napa County Sheriff’s Department issued an alert to residents warning them to avoid the area. The home has been on lock down since and those in the area have been asked to shelter in place.
ABC7 News crews at the scene have not heard gunshots but report seeing half a dozen ambulances at the property.
