My fatuous mock novel snippet may have failed to make its serious point the other day, so I will make it here sans devices.
The use of subtext in fiction under tyranny is a necessary and natural manifestation of suppressed expression. The diving of the submarine is symbolic of this dive into the realm of the absurd in order to evade threat. The revitalization of oppressive Canadian legislature will give rise to better art–necessitated theoretically by the squelched creative voice. Free voices merely change their tongues in order to speak to power. A most ridiculous example of this being the language of dolphins and whales in order to maintain both cover and expression.
I had read your fictional account, (but now can’t find the link to it), and am grateful to have had it explained. “Maple Tepes” becomes clear. It was not a love story between two journeymen with the same Canadian roots. I have unlinked to my agent.
Yucki I have read and reread your response. Your point about what happens when you dig a little into the critical mass is well taken and you’re right–maybe we’re not quite as strong as I pretend in my little Ra-ra spiel.
Righteousness is a haunting concept for me these days on different levels. Gotta start with oneself before looking outward, I know, but it’s unsettling what we see.
I like your “dense layering…rugged terrain…” –Very relevant to my fake submarine chapter. Humans have understood the need and beauty of subtext forever. It’s the “Ah-ha” moment created by the delay just before understanding. Same as humour.
Funny in the end though, isn’t it? Communicating under pseudonyms is like having one leg in the sub that’s going under. Our language goes next. Whale and Dolphin talk. The Metamorphosis is now.

There is no European Islam and no Desert Islam, there is only Islam. There are Moslems who don’t follow all of the tenets of Islam but this doesn’t make a different Islam.
Islam makes deserts. Slaves and desrts.
