My teens were shocked. I explained that the President merely failed to use the euphemism “third-world country.” Didn’t help because no one besides Mom bothered to say that. “Bernie Sanders would not have been so racist.” I suppose the kids will write his name in when they can vote….reality is not. strong suit for them, although our half-day visit to a Mexican border town was enough to make them say that passports were not meant to be wasted on travel like this. 54 African countries demand Trump apologise for ‘s***hole’ slur
A group of 54 ‘extremely appalled’ African countries demanded Friday that US President Donald Trump retract and apologise for his reported denunciation of immigration from ‘s***hole’ nations.
After an emergency session to weigh Trump’s remarks, the group of African ambassadors to the United Nations said it was “concerned at the continuing and growing trend from the US administration toward Africa and people of African descent to denigrate the continent and people of color.”
The group is “extremely appalled at, and strongly condemns the outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks by the president of the United States of America as widely reported by the media,” a statement added, demanding a “retraction and an apology.”
The African Union condemned the remarks while the southern African state of Botswana hauled in the US ambassador to complain.
The comment “truly flies in the face of accepted behaviour and practice,” said Ebba Kalondo, spokeswoman for AU chief Moussa Faki.
“This is even more hurtful given the historical reality of just how many Africans arrived in the United States as slaves, and also terribly surprising as the United States remains a massively positive example as just how migration can give birth to a nation,” Kalondo said.
The comments were “clearly” racist, Kalondo said, but stressed the US was “much stronger than the sum total of one man”.
Trump made the remarks on Thursday in a meeting with lawmakers on immigration reform, The Washington Post and The New York Times reported. On Friday, Trump tweeted an implicit denial, saying “this was not the language used”.

On social media, users across the continent on Friday posted images of modern skylines and beautiful nature from their countries with the ironic hashtag “shithole”.
Many Africans reminded the US of its historic role in the continent’s woes.
“First stop would be Osu Castle, Elmina Castle, and the over 40 Forts that detained about 30 million slaves, beaten and shipped out like sardine cans and then I will tell you the history of Africa and why people like you made that a ‘shithole’ continent.”
Prominent Kenyan commentator Patrick Gathara, told AFP that Trump’s words were nothing new from a “racist and ignorant” administration, nor from the West at large.
“This is no different from what Hollywood and Western media have been saying about Africa for decades. We have consistently been portrayed as shitty people from shitty countries.”
Extremely offensive’
“This statement shocks us a lot… as Africans but as black people too”, said Senegalese teacher Mohamed Dieye, adding that “we do not need Americans or Europeans, we will go it alone”.
Some acknowledged problems in their countries, but blamed this on their poor leaders as well as western nations such as the US.
“Please don’t confuse the #shithole leaders we Africans elect with our beautiful continent… Our motherland is the most blessed continent that has been raped by imperialists in collaboration with our shitty misleaders for generations,” wrote Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi on Twitter.
In South Africa, the ruling party declared “ours is not a shithole country” and described Trump as “extremely offensive”.
“It is not as if the United States doesn’t have difficulties. There are millions of unemployed people in the US, millions of people who don’t have health care services or access to education and we would not deign to make comments as derogatory as that,” said Jessie Duarte, the deputy secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC).
It’s our shithole’
Some Nigerians however did not hold back, with many on Twitter saying their country was a “shithole”, but that it was “our shithole” to criticise.
In Senegal’s capital Dakar, administrator Idrissa Fall said “we cannot really say that he (Trump) is wrong”.
“African countries, and sometimes our leaders, do not exactly deal with the problems of the worst-off, that’s what makes people immigrate”.
Even war-torn South Sudan weighed in, with President Salva Kiir’s spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny slamming the comments as “outrageous”.
However Juba businesswoman Jenny Jore, 31, told AFP that Trump’s remarks were “on point”.
“It is thanks to our African leaders that we are insulted that way,” she said.
Trump’s latest comments also provided ample fodder for talkshow hosts.
South African comedian Trevor Noah, star of “The Daily Show”, described himself as an offended citizen of “South Shithole” and also criticised Trump’s preferred choice of Norway for immigrants.
“He didn’t just name a white country, he named the whitest -– so white they wear moon-screen,” he said.

House Dems plan measure to censure Trump over ‘s—hole countries’ remarks
Two top House Democrats said Friday they will unveil a resolution next week to censure President Trump following reports he expressed a preference for immigrants from Norway over people from what he described as “shithole countries” like Haiti, El Salvador and African nations.
Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, expect to formally introduce the censure resolution after the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
The two lawmakers said in a joint statement that they were “deeply disturbed and offended” by Trump’s remarks describing places like Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries.”
The Washington Post first reported that Trump made the comments during an Oval Office meeting with members of Congress about immigration policy.
In announcing their plans, Richmond and Nadler pointedly noted that Trump lost the popular vote to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016 — a fact that Trump has at times claimed, without substantiation, is because of fraudulent votes.
“This censure resolution is important because America is a beacon of hope. We have to show the world that this president does not represent the real feelings of most of the American people which is part of the reason why he lost the popular vote,” Richmond and Nadler said.
“Congress must speak with one voice in condemning these offensive and anti-American remarks. There is no excuse for it.”
Some Republicans have joined with Democrats in criticizing Trump over the remarks.
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) broke his silence on the issue on Friday, saying at a WisPolitics event that Trump’s comments were “very unfortunate” and “unhelpful.”
Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah), a Haitian-American, called on Trump to apologize.
“The president’s comments are unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation’s values,” Love said in a statement.
Richmond and Nadler said they will ask House GOP leaders to bring up the resolution for a vote, but their efforts are unlikely to be successful.
Nadler previously introduced a resolution to censure Trump when he cast equal blame on white supremacists and counterprotesters for violence in Charlottesville, Va., last August.
Earlier Friday, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) announced that he would force another House floor vote to impeach Trump next week in light of Trump’s remarks. A vote Green forced last month failed on the floor, but 58 Democrats supported it.
“Congressional condemnation of racist bigotry is not enough. In Congress, talk is cheap — it’s how we vote that counts. Next week, I will again bring a resolution to impeach @realDonaldTrump. I will put my vote where my mouth is,” Green tweeted.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has stayed away from liberals’ calls for impeachment, citing the ongoing investigations into whether the Russian government coordinated with the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 election.
But Pelosi did endorse the push to censure Trump over his handling of the white supremacists in Charlottesville, saying at the time that “with each passing day, it becomes clearer that the Republican Congress must declare whether it stands for our sacred American values or with the President who embraces white nationalism.”
Despite denouncing Trump’s response to the Charlottesville violence, Republicans almost immediately rejected the idea of censuring the president.
The censure resolution gained most of the House Democratic caucus as co-sponsors but ultimately never received any legislative action.
Congress has rarely tried to censure a president.
The only time the Senate considered censure was for President Andrew Jackson in 1834 for moving to dismantle the Bank of the United States. The censure resolution was ultimately revoked by Jackson’s allies three years later after they gained control of the chamber.
The House has moved a handful of times to censure or rebuke presidents, such as John Tyler in 1842 for abuse of powers and James Buchanan in 1860 for the handling of Navy contracts.
Some Democrats suggested censuring President Bill Clinton in place of an impeachment vote in 1998, but their efforts were not successful.

Spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Rupert Colville reacted to US President Donald Trump’s alleged comments referring to El Salvador, Haiti and African countries as “shithole countries” during a meeting at UN headquarters in Geneva, Friday.
“These are shocking and shameful comments from the President of the United States. Sorry, but there is no other word one can use but ‘racist’. You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘shitholes’ whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome,” stated Colville.
The UN-OHCHR spokesperson continued, “This is not just a story about vulgar language, it is about opening the door wider to humanity’s worst side, about validating and encouraging racism and xenophobia that will potentially disrupt and destroy the lives of many people.”

Iran: FM Zarif condemns Trump’s ‘shithole countries’ rant
Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned US President Donald Trump’s “shithole countries” remark during a conference in Tehran on Saturday.
In his speech at the first Conference of Asian Cultural Dialogues, Zarif said, “Unfortunately, today we see that the person who holds the power in his hands in the United States doesn’t have enough understanding that he refers to all [other] nations with vulgar and unacceptable words. It is unbelievable that these words are coming from someone who calls himself responsible for that country”.
Zarif also called Asia the cradle of culture and civilization and lamented that it is now stricken with crises, conflict and massacres.

The end is nigh. Facebook is planning a major change to its news feed, starting as early as next week, that will decisively favor user content and effectively deprioritize publishers’ content, according to three publishers that have been briefed by the platform ahead of the move.
Those who have been briefed say that under the new test, Facebook told them it will favor content that’s shared by users or otherwise actively engaged with. The thinking goes, according to those briefed, that Facebook believes prioritizing content that’s acted on will reduce the occurrence of fake and offensive content in the news feed.
Publishers still have many questions about the impending news feed change. Facebook told them that content from reputable publishers will also be surfaced. It didn’t specify how it would define “reputable publisher” or how their traffic would be impacted, though. The worry for publishers is that such an approach will have the unintended consequence of hurting high-quality content because a lot of legitimate news articles, while they may get read, tend not to get shared or commented on.

FBI scrutinizes funeral home with side business: selling body parts
MONTROSE, Colorado, Jan 11 (Reuters) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation is interviewing former employees of a funeral home whose owner runs a side business on the same premises selling human body parts.
An agent with the FBI has interviewed at least four former employees who worked for funeral director and body broker Megan Hess, seeking information about how she operates her businesses, the former workers told Reuters.
The federal inquiry began several months ago, shortly after Reuters interviewed a half-dozen workers who formerly worked for Hess.

Next year, General Motors Co. will no longer need an engineer in the front seat babysitting the robot brain that controls its self-driving Chevrolet Bolt. The steering wheel and pedals will be gone, giving total control to the machine.
When GM starts testing its autonomous electric sedan in San Francisco ride-sharing fleets, it’ll likely be the first production-ready car on the roads without the tools to let a human assume control. The announcement Friday is the first sign from a major carmaker that engineers have enough confidence in self-driving cars to let them truly go it alone.

Sea lion attacks fourth swimmer in San Francisco Bay
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A sea lion bit a woman swimming in the San Francisco Bay in the fourth such attack since December.
The woman’s friend says the two members of the South End Rowing Club were swimming around 7 a.m. Thursday when the sea lion latched onto her and tried to drag her underwater.
The friend, Alice Ma, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the sea lion “chomped down on” the swimmer’s knee and pulled.
Fire Department Lt. John Baxter said a retired San Francisco firefighter who also was swimming helped the badly bleeding woman as she came out of the water. She was taken to a hospital.
Baxter says officials are encouraging people who visit the popular swimming area to stay in pairs and keep a close eye out.

Thousands of Greeks protest over right to strike, hitting hospitals, transport and shipping

O’Keefe doesn’t always hit the mark with the premise or execution of his undercover videos (most recently, for example, trying to bait the Washington Post into using a phony allegation about sexual misconduct for the basis of a story).
But in this case, he has succeeded in getting Twitter workers to candidly describe, on video, a practice that other sources have previously reported on, but without being able to produce such apparently definitive evidence.
It’s important to make a distinction here between the outright banning of user accounts, and the practice of shadow banning. Banning accounts outright means that accounts are removed by Twitter. Whatever has been posted through those accounts is deleted. President Donald Trump’s administration is attempting to change federal rules that force banks to lend to poor and insolvent borrowers, by rolling back the “Community Reinvestment Act” of 1977.
Community groups have come out in support of the law as written and expressed concern that any interference may limit access to loans for poorer applicants, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The Treasury Department is planning to release recommendations to change the law in early 2018, the Journal reports. Banks believe new changes to the law would grant them more flexibility and ultimately improve the way they do business.

Finn Borch Andersen, head of Denmark’s Security and Intelligence Service, says al-Qaida’s capability primarily lies in North, West and East Africa and in Yemen but the network has also “a significant presence” in Syria that may pose a threat to the West.
Borch Andersen says foreign fighters who have left Syria and Iraq represent “a terror threat” but added access to Europe is “restricted by increased security measures,” such as border controls within the European Union.
In the agency’s terror threat assessment for Denmark, presented Friday, he said the threat to the country remains significant and “is primarily posed by militant Islamism.””

Russia: Veselnitskaya sceptical of ‘unnamed sources’ in Trump-Russia investigation
“Why did these unnamed sources and unverified information all of a sudden become the subject of the investigation carried out by four or five government bodies in the United States,” wondered Russian Lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya during an interview in Moscow on Friday referring to newly-released information on the Trump-Russia dossier.
“Not only they spend great manpower resources on this investigation, distract so many politicians from urgent matters,” she continued, adding “a huge amount of taxpayers’ money is spent while trying to figure out anything but the sources [of this information].”

WikiLeaks collaborator, James Dolan, who co-created the technology that allowed WikiLeaks to obtain and publish the leaked DNC and Podesta emails, has been found dead. He was 36.
James Dolan was announced dead by Freedom of the Press Association, however besides claiming that he “took his own life over the holidays” few details about the strange death have been made public.

In the 1920s a Coroners Jury in the Ozarks ruled that a man committed suicide by stabbing himself in the back with a bolt action rifle. (I have always liked that decision) This could be another case like that.
Not only stabbed himself with the rifle but cleaned all of the blood off the rifle so as not to ruin it.

“Police have arrested 20 men as part of an investigation into historic abuses by a grooming gang that operated in West Yorkshire.
The suspects, aged between 28 and 43, were detained in three days of raids across Calderdale and Kirklees.
Two have been released on police bail and another 18 remain under investigation.
Detective Inspector Allan Raw, of West Yorkshire Police, said the force was committed to investigating current and historic cases.
“These are abhorrent crimes that affect the most vulnerable in our society,” he added.
“Tackling any form of child abuse is not something that any one agency can do in isolation though which is why we work closely with local authorities and other organisations and charities to support victims, bring offenders to justice and make our communities safer.
“We would urge anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse, no matter when it took place, to report it to the police. Please be assured that you will be listened to, taken seriously and supported by professionals with experience of dealing with these kind of offences.”.
A group of 15 men have already been jailed for systematically abusing teenage girls in the Calderdale area, after being convicted of offences including rape, grooming and trafficking.
Prosecutors said the gang attacked victims in cars or plied them with drink and drugs at their homes.
This week’s arrests were part of the same investigation, which centres on allegations made a woman who was the victim of sexual abuse as a child in the Halifax area between 2006 and 2009.
They came after another suspected grooming gang was uncovered by Cleveland Police, with officers arresting 10 suspects in Stockton-on-Tees and Sheffield on Tuesday.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and the others, aged between 18 and 47, were detained for offences including conspiracy to rape and commit human trafficking, blackmail, causing girls to engage in sexual activity and drugs offences.
Intelligence gathered so far suggests that an unknown number of young women have been trafficked within Cleveland and beyond the area for several months, being raped by multiple men after being driven to residential homes.
Police struck after a woman from Teesside came forward to say she had been taken to different parts of the country and abused.
Her evidence has identified 10 other potential victims and investigators expect the number to rise as the operation continues.
There have been several large-scale police operations against grooming gangs in the wake of revelations that victims in Rotherham were ignored or accused of criminal offences over years of abuse.
More than 700 potential victims were identified by Operation Sanctuary, which investigated grooming gangs operating in Northumberland and Tyne and Weir – bordering Cleveland.
Officials warned at the time that there was “every likelihood this is happening in every town and city across the country”, urging police and local councils to actively search for grooming activity.
More than a dozen men have been jailed for their part in the Newcastle-based ring, and groups have been prosecuted for sexual exploitation in Oxford, Bradford and Rochdale.
Last month, The Independent revealed that a new suspected grooming gang had been uncovered in London, with at least four girls aged between 13 and 15 reporting rape.
Police said a criminal gang was operating out of a McDonald’s in Stratford, targeting victims before taking them to different locations where they were sexually assaulted.
Drugs and alcohol are frequently used by grooming gangs to incapacitate girls or coerce them into sex, with the criminality later discouraging victims from going to police.
There are several methods of grooming, with the best-known “boyfriend” model seeing an abusive relationship used to force victims into sex with others.
Children can also be trafficked, befriended online or – in the so-called “party model” – targeted by groups of men who lure them to gatherings with offers of drinks, drugs, money and car rides.”

“A couple who deny murdering a French nanny have admitted they tried to dispose of her body by burning it.
The charred remains of Sophie Lionnet, 21, were discovered in the garden at a house in Southfields on 20 September.
Police were initially unable to identify the body but later confirmed it was Ms Lionnet, originally from Troyes in north-east France.
Sabrina Kouider, 34, and her partner Ouissem Medouni, 40, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.
At the Old Bailey, the pair, of Wimbledon Park Road, Wandsworth, south London, admitted the charge of perverting the course of justice by attempting to “dispose of the body of Sophie Lionnet by burning”.
