No-drone zone: Defense Department studies unauthorized flights near Pentagon
The Defense Department detected nearly 100 unauthorized drones flying near the Pentagon over a two-month period last year, according to officials involved in a survey of drone activity near military bases.
The study — conducted amid concerns that terrorists and spies could use the remotely piloted aircraft for surveillance, espionage and attacks — follows a Federal Aviation Administration ban of unauthorized drone flights over 133 military bases.
Officials did not provide a list of the installations involved in the survey.
However, drone-detection equipment was deployed last year at two bases near the nation’s capital — Fort Lesley J. McNair from July 19 to Aug. 24 and Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall from Aug. 24 to Sept. 23, said Michael Howard, public affairs director at Myer-Henderson Hall.
“We detected 95 instances of drone activity,” he wrote in an email to Stars and Stripes. “We did not attempt to determine the nature of the drone activity, whether it was recreational or something else.”

Russia probe grand jury looks like ‘a Black Lives Matter rally,’ says witness
The federal grand jury handing down indictments for special counsel Robert Mueller doesn’t appear to include any supporters of President Donald Trump, according to one witness who recently testified before the panel.
“The grand jury room looks like a Bernie Sanders rally,” my source said. “Maybe they found these jurors in central casting, or at a Black Lives Matter rally in Berkeley [Calif.]”
Of the 20 jurors, 11 are African-Americans and two were wearing “peace T-shirts,” the witness said. “There was only one white male in the room, and he was a prosecutor.” Mueller was not present.
The Washington, DC, grand jury, which meets only on Fridays, handed down its first indictments in October, charging Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, and his partner Rick Gates with money laundering and failing to register as foreign agents. The two are pleading not guilty.
Mueller’s team is expected to bring more charges against Manafort relating to his work on behalf of the Ukrainian government in the years before Trump became a candidate.
Sol Wachtler, the former chief judge in New York, once called for abolishing grand juries because they are so easily manipulated that they would “indict a ham sandwich.”

After lining up for an entire day to get a plane ticket to visit her relatives in the western city of Mérida, Josefina García did not know if she and her octogenarian mother were going to reach their final destination on time for Christmas.
The airport is located 76 kilometers away from the city and when they tried to book a cab in advance to take them to the place where they were going to stay, the taxi company said they could not make bookings because there is a shortage of gas and management did not know if they were going to have enough fuel on the day of Josefina’s arrival.
Once they landed, the 61-year-old and her mother found a cab that had enough gas to take them to a certain part of the city where a cousin would pick them up. In the meantime, another cousin was lining up for gas. He was able to fill his sedan’s tank after waiting for more than six hours.

New study finds sweary people are more honest

People who swear may be more trustworthy, according to researchers.
In the three-part study, published in the Social Psychological and Personality Science journal – an international team led by Gilad Feldman of Maastricht University in the Netherlands analysed swearing in society.
First, the team studied 276 people to find out how they curse. They asked participants to list their favourite swear words and to ‘self-report’ their everyday use of profanity. Researchers also asked the subjects to note down the emotions they associate with those swear words – anger, exasperation or fear for example.

Senators Unveil Bill to Ditch Voting Machines, Standardize Election Audits
A bi-partisan group of senators introduced a bill to abandon paperless voting machines in U.S. elections.
The Secure Elections Act is aimed at enhancing the accuracy and credibility of election results.
The bill was introduced by a group of six senators in response to the speculations surrounding the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
Sponsors of the legislation say it will also mitigate the risks of foreign interference.
Senators propose providing federal grants to states so they can get rid of voting machines believed to be “obsolete” and “vulnerable” to hacking.

North Korea reopens border hotline as Trump boasts of ‘bigger’ nuclear button
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea reopened a long-closed border hotline with South Korea on Wednesday, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to mock the North’s leader by saying he has a “bigger and more powerful” nuclear button than he does.
The North’s decision to open the border phone line came a day after South Korea proposed high-level discussions amid a tense standoff over North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs.
That followed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s New Year address in which he said he was open to speaking with the South and would consider sending a delegation to the Winter Olympics to be held just across the border in Pyeongchang in February.
U.S. officials said Washington would not take any talks between North and South Korea seriously if they did not contribute to denuclearizing North Korea. A State Department spokeswoman said North Korea “might be trying to drive a wedge of some sort”.

U.S. puts Pakistan on notice: Do more to stop terrorism
WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – The United States accused Pakistan on Tuesday of playing a “double game” on fighting terrorism and warned Islamabad it would have to do more if it wanted to maintain U.S. aid.
“They can do more to stop terrorism and we want them to do that,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters.
The White House said it would likely announce actions to pressure Pakistan within days, shortly after U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said at the United Nations that Washington would withhold $255 million in assistance to Pakistan.
“There are clear reasons for this. Pakistan has played a double game for years,” Haley told reporters. “They work with us at times, and they also harbor the terrorists that attack our troops in Afghanistan.
“That game is not acceptable to this administration. We expect far more cooperation from Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.”
The comments followed an angry tweet from President Donald Trump on Monday that the United States had been rewarded with “nothing but lies and deceit” for “foolishly” giving Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid in the past 15 years.

“GARDAI are investigating a string of attacks this morning that have left one man dead and two others injured.
The incidents took place in Dundalk, Co Louth. One man has died after he was attacked from behind and stabbed in the back with a knife on Avenue Road. He is understood to be from Japan, and was 24 years old. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is understood that at least two others – both understood to be Irish men – had earlier been injured in separate attacks. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
He has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being detained at Dundalk Garda Station. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours. Gardaí have confirmed that the arrested man is from Egypt, and is aged 18 years. Earlier, it was believed that the man was originally from Syria.
Gardaí have preserved three scenes in total in the town for examination and it is believed at this stage that the attacks were random.
Early indications are that the attacks on two Irish men occurred first, although this has yet to be confirmed.
“Gardaí are investigating a stabbing incident in Dundalk Co Louth shortly before 9am this morning,” a garda spokesman said.
“A number of other people have also been injured in this incident but their injuries are unknown at present. One man has been arrested and is currently detained in Dundalk Garda Station.
“There are currently three scenes preserved for technical examination: Avenue Road, Inner Relief Road and Seatown.”
Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388400, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
Gardai are trying to find a motive for the attack, including to learn if the attack was planned. They are also investigating whether the attacker knew the victims – or if the stabbings were carried out at random. They currently believe that the attacks were random.
A hearse arrived on Avenue Road just before 1pm to remove the body from the scene for a post mortem examination.
The garda dog unit is currently at the scene of the murder.”

Palestinians condemn Trump aid halt threat, mixed reaction in Israel
RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) – Palestinians condemned as blackmail on Wednesday U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to withhold future aid payments over what he called the Palestinians’ unwillingness to talk peace with Israel.
Trump drew praise from a cabinet minister in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government but a warning from a former Israeli peace negotiator of the dangers in cutting off financial assistance to the Palestinians.
On Twitter on Tuesday, Trump said that Washington gives Palestinians “HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel … with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”

Iran stages pro-government rallies after sixth day of protests
LONDON (Reuters) – Thousands of Iranians took part in pro-government rallies in several cities on Wednesday in a state-sponsored show of force after six days of street unrest that has shaken the clerical leadership and left 21 people dead.
State television broadcast live pictures of rallies in the southwestern cities of Kermanshah and Ilam and in the northern city of Gorgan, where marchers waved Iranian flags and pictures of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In the Shi’ite holy city of Qom, demonstrators chanted “death to American mercenaries”. There were also rallies in Isfahan, Iran’s third largest city, and Abadan and Khorramshahr in the oil-rich southwest, state TV footage showed.
Marchers voiced support for Khamenei, chanting, “The blood in our veins is a gift to our leader,” and, “We will not leave our leader alone.” They accused the United States, Israel and Britain of inciting the unrest and shouted, “The seditionist rioters should be executed!”

IRGC Commander Declares End of Sedition in Iran
IRGC Chief-Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari says the plot hatched by the enemies of the Islamic Republic to create sedition in Iran has been completely foiled.
Speaking on Wednesday in Tehran, General Jafari touched upon enemy plots to provoke chaos and riots in the country in recent days and noted the days of “sedition” are over.
He said one of the key objectives of the seditionists and their masters in the recent riots was to get some people killed and then blame the government for it.
“Our security system’s readiness and people’s vigilance made the enemy taste yet another defeat,” he noted.
The commander then touched upon social media as a contributor to the recent riots, and the restrictions imposed on them later on to inhibit seditionists’ moves.
“A lack of control over the cyberspace, which is managed from outside the country, and the officials’ failure to control it further fuelled the riots; however, when the virtual world (social media) were controlled [by relevant authorities in Iran] the riots decreased,” he said.
He further noted that it is God Almighty’s promise that sedition and hardships are followed by promising says.
“The enemies know that they cannot threaten the Islamic Republic of Iran in the defense domain, whatsoever,” said the top commander, adding that the enemies’ security threats against the country are not effective.
“They have spent all their assets following the Holy Defence era (the period of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s) to carry out their cultural, economic and security threats against Islamic Iran, and, By God’s grace, they will undoubtedly be defeated,” General Jafari underlined.
“When a nation is victorious in a region gripped by tension and chaos, and when this nation rejects the United States’ domination and does not care about America’s cronies which are in the pay of Washington, and when it stands by the oppressed and against oppressors, it is natural that it will be threatened. Such threats have always been there, and we need to remain vigilant,” he said.
He noted that the Iranian people’s power, patience and vigilance have always brought days of victory for them.
“Let the enemies and the ones who are in their pay such as the Al Saud [regime] shout and call us names, but they know that our path and objective have been fruitful in the world,” the commander underscored.
He said the US, Zionists and Al Saud rulers have ordered ISIS terrorists to enter Iran, adding some of the terror group’s advance teams have entered Iran to set off explosions and conduct acts of sabotage.
“The criminal group’s advance elements are completely under control now, and we dare the terror group’s weak forces to cross the borders of Islamic Iran,” he noted.
He touched upon the United States, the West and Zionists’ false friendship with Iranian people and their collusion with seditionists, and added, “If these liars really cared about Iranian people, they would have never imposed sanctions on them.”
“Some people feel that friendship with the US will improve the economic situation, but they should look at countries such as Egypt, which sacrificed everything it had for friendship with the United States,” commander Jafari said.
He then warned against compromising with the enemy, saying such a move would be costly.
“Today, the enemy’s policies in the region have failed, and all it can do is to create insecurity in Iran. People and officials should know that the cost of compromising with the enemy would be much higher than the cost of resistance,” the top general stressed.

As massive Iranian protests continue, what U.S. should and shouldn’t do

The protests in Iran, now entering their sixth day, show no sign of abating. U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, our representative in the UN, made a superb speech at her press conference on Tuesday highlighting the sentiments and slogans coming from the Iranians themselves, and expressed America’s support for their yearning to throw off corrupt and tyrannical government. (Video below.)
A post by Adam Kredo at the Washington Free Beacon recounted comments from the Trump administration, which has promised to take a more rhetorically active posture than its predecessor did in 2009. This will be positive, given that the sheer scope of the uprising in Iran is being called unprecedented by Iranian observers. There could be a real possibility of reform for the Iranian people, and silence is not the right posture for America at such a juncture.
Neither is intervention in internal Iranian affairs. I haven’t heard a soul call for such intervention, nor do we have the slightest reason to expect the Trump administration to suddenly change its reflexively non-interventionist spots and start rooting around in Iran. That’s good news.

What she is recommending is for the US (and the rest of the world) to stand back, give moral support to the protesters and let the Iranians settle this on their own. We also don’t want to try to dictate what the next Iranian government is to be like, this is also the business of the Iranian people.
We must also keep from harping on the nuclear deal, this will make people think that all we are concerned about is destroying the nuke deal.
We set back, watch the show and hope for the best. After all of the shouting is done and a new Iranian government is chosen then we can talk to them about the nukes. I would say we could talk about returning the Iranian money frozen by Carter and Reagan but Obama already gave that to the Mullahs who promptly stole it.
People seem to forget that the “hostage population” of Iran are all muslims. They all labour under Allahs demand to destroy everything until only Islam remains. They haven’t had ten seconds reflection and understanding of “freedom and democracy” in 1400 years. I wish only death and destruction to everyone in Iran and the raghead world. Actually, Persia is a little different. It was a communist group that did the revolution in the 70s which led to the unanticipated and undesired result of the theocracy. The intention of the rioting students then was for a more free, secular democracy. Seriously, I know a few of these people.

Persians get offended when they are confused with Arabs and a large number of them think of themselves as “Arab conquered Persians”. They kept more of their science, art and history than any other flavour of muslim.
It is open season on Shiia (Iranian muslims) by Sunnis who view them as hypocrites, guilty of shirk by Islamic standards and they are correct, by islamic standards.
Of all the nations in the region, Iran has the best chance of reform.
And I would totally agree with that, furthermore many Iranians are leaving Islam, or at least there is very strong rumors of that happening.

Federal prosecutors are asking Chief U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro for another chance at convicting Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy for crimes associated with an armed standoff with federal agents in 2014, E&E News reports.
Navarro ruled a mistrial against Bundy and three others, including his two sons, in December after prosecutors failed to turn over exculpatory evidence that favored the defendants’ case. Navarro is considering whether the case should be dismissed “with prejudice,” blocking a retrial.
The omissions do not amount to “flagrant misconduct,” prosecutors claim and are asking for another attempt at trying Bundy, according to E&E News.
“The Brady violations found by the court are regrettable and benefit no one,” Nevada’s Acting U.S. Attorney and lead prosecutor in the Bundy case Steven Myhre wrote in a legal brief obtained by The Oregonian. “But because the government neither flagrantly violated nor recklessly disregarded its obligations, the appropriate remedy for such violations is a new trial.”

“The Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig, Germany has launched a digital platform to document millions of books and manuscripts from the Arab and Islamic world, Al-Jazeera reported today.
The platform named “The Arab Library” was launched earlier this week, providing researchers and academics access to rare and original historical texts. The project is scheduled to run until 2036, with the possibility of its work being extended if demand exists.
A budget of €7.5 million ($9 million), funded by the German federal government and local authorities in various states, was allocated to the initiative, which is being supervised by Dr Freena Kalim, a professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Leipzig University.
“This project is a huge tool to help scientists and researchers in the field of Arabic studies and Islamic sciences,” Kalim said in a statement. “Arab literature has been inherited for about 1,400 years, and the culture of books in the Arab-Islamic civilization is rich, vibrant, diverse and unlike any other.”…”

OTTAWA—Joshua Boyle, the Canadian man who was held hostage with his American wife and children for five years in Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been arrested and charged with assault, unlawful confinement and other offences that are alleged to have occurred in the weeks since his dramatic rescue from captivity in October.
Boyle, 34, appeared in Ottawa court on New Year’s Day and remains in police custody.
There is a court order that prevents publication of information that would identify any of the alleged victims.
Boyle faces 15 charges, according to a court document outlining the allegations.

It remains to be seen whether the gardai will acknowledge this as an Islamic Terrorist Attack but one thing is for sure – there were terrifying scenes in Dundalk today.
As we reported earlier, it’s now understood that the man who stabbed multiple people in Dundalk Co. Louth this morning, who is said to be aged 18, is a Egyptian migrant.
It’s now understood that when confronted by gardai, the 18-yr-old Egyptian migrant attacked two members of the force with an iron bar.

Man poses as nurse to try to rape woman
In Rome hospital
A 38-year-old Somali man stole a nurse’s uniform and tried to rape a 43-year-old woman in the maternity ward of a Rome hospital on New Year’s Eve, sources said Tuesday.
He was arrested on charges of sexual violence.
The man went into the ward of Sant’Eugenio Hospital while the woman was giving birth and reportedly began groping her.
She fended him off and called nurses who seized the man until police arrived.

Italy: Man detained in connection with fatal stabbing of 26-yo mother in refugee shelter
A man was detained on Tuesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker in Catania. The man is believed to be a former partner of the victim and is being questioned by Italian police.
The victim, a mother of two, was found with knife lacerations to her throat after her children had told assistants at the Cara Mineo centre that “Mum is sick and is on the ground.”
The detained man is an asylum seeker from Mali who has held residence in northern Italy since his arrival in 2016.
Police are holding him at the offices of a mobile police station for further questioning.
