Saudi Arabia is investing $1 billion in Virgin Galactic and its spinoff companies
The money will help accelerate vehicle development
Saudi Arabia plans to invest $1 billion in Richard Branson’s private space venture Virgin Galactic, as well as its spinoff companies The Spaceship Company and Virgin Orbit. The country has the option of investing an additional $480 million in the future, too. The money will go toward Virgin’s space tourism program and help accelerate the development of the company’s new launch vehicle to send small satellites into orbit.
The deal is part of a new partnership announced today between Saudi Arabia and Virgin, which both signed a Memorandum of Understanding — a formal but non-binding agreement — for the investment. The intent is to draw the funds from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which is used for domestic and international investments on behalf of the country’s government. The deal, however, is still pending and subject to regulatory approval by the US government.
For now, it’s unclear which companies will receive the bulk of the $1 billion funding, but two of Virgin’s space programs are in crucial stages of development right now. Virgin Galactic, which oversees Virgin’s human spaceflight program, is currently doing glide tests of its spaceplane the VSS Unity, which is designed to launch from an aircraft carrier and take people into space for a few brief minutes of weightlessness. Virgin Galactic hopes to begin powered tests of Unity later this year, and possibly start sending people into space as soon as the end of 2018. Additionally, the recently formed Virgin Orbit is developing a new launch vehicle, called LauncherOne, meant to also take off from the wing of an airplane and carry small satellites to orbit. The first tests of the rocket are supposed to take place in the first half of 2018.

Virgin signs agreement with Saudi Arabia for billion-dollar investment
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Virgin Group announced Oct. 26 an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund for an investment of $1 billion into Virgin’s suborbital and orbital space ventures.
The non-binding memorandum of understanding between the Virgin Group and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia covers a partnership whereby the fund will take a “significant” stake in Virgin Galactic, Virgin Orbit and The Spaceship Company for $1 billion, with an option for $480 million in future investment in the companies.
The companies did not disclose when the non-binding agreement would become a binding investment. Ollie Pratt, a spokesman for the Virgin Group, did not disclose the size of the stake PIF was taking but that Virgin would remain the majority shareholder in the companies.
Virgin said the investment would accelerates its existing plans for human spaceflight and small satellite launch services, and support development of future services, including point-to-point commercial supersonic flight and “the possibility to develop a space-centric entertainment industry” in Saudi Arabia, according to a statement.
“We are now just months away from Virgin Galactic going into space with people on board and Virgin Orbit going into orbit and placing satellites around the Earth,” Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, said in a statement. “This investment will enable us to develop the next generation of satellite launches and accelerate our program for point-to-point supersonic space travel.”
The announcement was made at an event called the Future Investment Initiative in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh organized by the PIF. That invent brought together a number of companies and investors “to explore the evolving role of sovereign wealth in driving the next wave of business, innovation, technology and investment,” according to a description on the event’s website.
“The future of Saudi Arabia is one of innovation, as showcased at this week’s Future Investment Initiative, and it’s through partnerships with organizations like Virgin Group that we will make active contributions to those sectors and technologies that are driving progress on a global scale,” said Prince Mohammad bin Salman Al-Saud, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, whose roles include serving as chairman of the PIF, in a statement.
The agreement is pending regulatory approvals, the companies said. This will likely include the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, the Treasury Department office that reviews investments by foreign entities in American companies for any national security or other issues.
The PIF investment is the second one by a fund in the region in Virgin Galactic. Aabar, a fund based in Abu Dhabi, made an initial $280 million investment in Virgin Galactic in 2009, securing a 32 percent stake. As of 2016, Aabar reported investing $380 million in Virgin Galactic and owning 37.8 percent of the company.
Virgin Galactic is approaching the beginning of powered flight tests of its second SpaceShipTwo suborbital vehicle. Branson, in recent public comments, said he expected the vehicle to make its first suborbital spaceflight by the end of the year and start carrying people, including Branson himself, in as little as six months. Company officials are more reticent to offer schedules. SpaceShipTwo is built by The Spaceship Company, a former joint venture with Scaled Composites now owned by Virgin.
Virgin Orbit, spun out of Virgin Galactic in March, is developing the LauncherOne smallsat air-launch system. The company anticipates performing its first launch in the first half of 2018.

The beating happened in June 2015, when the man and his former wife’s ex-lover joined forces to attack her with a nail-spiked club. According to court documents, the ex-lover restrained her while the man hit her in the head and body with the club. Injuries from the beating to the head required her to get five stitches.
The man, the ex-wife and her ex-lover were not identified in court documents.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt says the death threats against him have extended to his family.
“The level of protection is dictated by the level of threat,” Pruitt told Bloomberg in an expansive interview released Wednesday night, answering questions about his recent request for almost a dozen more 24-hour security agents.
“The quantity and the volume — as well as the type — of threats are different. What’s really disappointing to me as it’s not just me — it’s family.”
Pruitt has an 18-member security team that is charged to guard him around the clock. It was reported earlier this week that EPA is looking to add as many as 12 new guards to the 18-member squad.

The National Secular Society has welcomed a decision from Lancashire County Council to only supply halal meat from animals that have been stunned before slaughter to schools.
The Council voted in favour of the motion to not provide non-poultry meat to schools and other establishments unless the animals were stunned before slaughter, and to consult with the Lancashire Council of Mosques and other concerned parties on how to best implement this policy.

Tillerson Demands Assad Leave Power in Syria Peace Process
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reaffirmed a long-standing U.S. demand that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad step down as part of the war-ravaged nation’s political transition after the defeat of Islamic State in its former stronghold of Raqqa.
“We do not believe there is a future for the Assad regime and the Assad family,” Tillerson told reporters in Geneva Thursday after meeting with Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations envoy for Syria, at the U.S. embassy. “The reign of the Assad regime is coming to an end, and the only issue is how should that be brought about.”
Tillerson’s remarks, which capped a trip to seven countries including Iraq and Afghanistan over the last week, echoed comments frequently made by his predecessor, John Kerry.
But there’s no sign that Assad, whose fortunes reversed after Russia intervened in Syria’s civil war on his behalf two years ago, has any intention of stepping down. And the U.S. has even less influence over the outcome now.
With U.S. influence in the six-year-old conflict diminished, Russia, Turkey and Iran have stepped up their presence. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed last month to take coordinated steps to set up and monitor a combat-free zone in Syria.

But there is a big problem and unanswered question–The Dossier includes a final report that is dated 13 December 2016. Who paid for this? Was it John McCain?
The purpose of the final fake report Steele added to the dossier was to provide “evidence” that Trump was involved in the “Russian hacking” of the DNC:

How do you legally spy on your political opponents?
At some point in time that question was asked in the White House, at the DNC or in the hotel suites where Hillary and her staff were staying during her speaking tours. It wasn’t exactly asked that way.
But it was asked. And now we know more of the answer.
What Hillary and Obama did wasn’t Watergate. That was amateur hour. Its sophistication is a tribute to the left’s deep knowledge and control of the workings of Washington, D.C. The men and women who planned this and carried it out understood not only government, but had an intimate familiarity with the loopholes in the laws and the networks of contacts that could realize their highly illegal plans.
The eavesdropping on Trump officials carried the ‘fingerprints’ of an administration that bypassed Congress to fund left-wing groups by blackmailing banks into huge settlements paid out to political allies in a billion dollar slush fund and sent pallets of foreign currency to Iran on unmarked planes. A complete lack of ethical norms was combined with the careful use of legal loopholes to protect the actions of the perpetrators even while they were engaging in a criminal conspiracy.

The Clinton team is ramping up its old war room tricks to deal with what is emerging as its own real Russian collusion scandal. One example is its handling of an embarrassing report by the Washington Post that Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC), through a lawyer representing both parties, helped bankroll the largely discredited Fusion GPS dossier compiled by a former British intelligence officer, Christopher Steele, on alleged Trump-Russian connections. The dossier was reportedly based at least in part on information he collected from Russian officials. After first denying any involvement of the Clinton campaign in funding the GPS dossier project until such denial was no longer tenable, the campaign team tried to spin its involvement as somehow being a patriotic act. When the New York Times’s Maggie Haberman, who has not been shy in writing critical stories about Donald Trump, tweeted, “Folks involved in funding this lied about it, and with sanctimony, for a year,” Hillary supporters denounced her with ad hominem attacks.
Hillary’s former press secretary, Brian Fallon, exclaimed to CNN’s Don Lemon, “It would be malpractice in my view for the campaign to not to want to turn over every rock and learn everything it could about Donald Trump.”
Really? Then why try to hide the campaign’s involvement for so long? Perhaps one explanation is that the Russian lawyer who had offered Donald Trump Jr. damaging information about Hillary Clinton was also involved with the Clinton campaign-funded Fusion GPS. In other words, a Russian lawyer connected with the firm paid in part by Hillary Clinton’s campaign to come up with dirt on Donald Trump could well have been setting a trap for his son in order to expose him to charges of Russian collusion and worse. Lincolnshire is a largely rural, even isolated county at the far eastern end of the British Midlands. It is heavily Conservative and voted “Leave” in last year’s EU referendum by a margin of almost two to one. Its largest city, Lincoln, has a population of 120, 000, roughly equivalent to that of Fargo and less than half that of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Yet even in this quiet corner of the U.K., Islam is a headline story. After Drummer Lee Rigby was butchered by terrorists on a busy London street in May 2013, a Lincolnshire man was arrested and another was given a warning by county police. For aiding or supporting the killers? No. For mentioning online that the killers were Muslims. A summer 2014 entry on the blog of a prominent British Muslim records her presence at an Islamic Society of Britain-sponsored festival, “Living Islam,” at which “Lincolnshire Police had a tent and were face painting kids.” And in 2015, Lincolnshire Police warned the families of British soldiers to “stop sharing their personal details online” after one soldier’s wife received a death threat from a Muslim. Did the police make any effort to track down the source of the threat? If so, I can find no record of it online.
Now the Lincolnshire Police have produced a thirteen-minute video as part of “Hate Crime Awareness week.” It is directed at the county’s children, which presumably means that copies will be, or have been, distributed to schools so that teachers can screen it for their pupils and lead discussions afterwards.

The legalization of marijuana for medicinal or recreational use, has not, as some politicians proclaimed, eliminated the black market for cannabis. Illicit weed grows are common in California, often manned by U.S. citizens or Mexican nationals in the country illegally. Like Sollozzo in The Godfather, the Chinese are now moving in on the market.
As the Sacramento Bee reports, in recent police raids, “the occupants of these grow houses have turned out to be Chinese nationals, raising questions about who is recruiting them and financing their operations.” In four California counties, police made “multiple arrests of people with Chinese passports, some of them speaking no English and apparently providing little help to investigators.”
In one case, “money from a southern China bank account was transferred to California to pay for down payments on homes that later became grow houses, suggesting that at least some in China are investing in the illicit U.S. marijuana market.”
Police call it a “sophisticated operation” run by businessmen. They purchase suburban houses with cash and hire electricians to bypass the electricity meters, “so growers can tap a free source of power to run grow lights and fans.”
According to police officials interviewed by the Bee, the arrestees are “experienced farmers from poor Chinese provinces, often in their 50s and 60s. Some have been smuggled into the United States, but many arrive with Chinese passports, presumably arranged by the grow-house operators.” Their B-1 or B-2 visas allow them to stay in the United States up to six months.

REWIND: FBI Used Clinton Campaign’s Steele Dossier to Get FISA Warrant on Trump Campaign

The implications from this week’s revelation — that the DNC and the Hillary Clinton campaign financed former British spy Christopher Steele’s unverified dossier of alleged connections between the Trump campaign and Russia — continue to expand.
But given this revelation, it’s important to revisit what we already know.
The FBI used the DNC/Clinton-funded dossier to obtain surveillance warrants targeting the Trump campaign from the top-secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. At the time, the FBI was led by then-director James Comey:

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un has ordered an increase in security at such sites as “hostile elements” within the hermit state deface the symbols.
Statues and murals depicting the three Kim leaders have been targeted by citizens furious at the imbalance in the country.
Kim has increased the number of monuments to his dynasty during his reign in an attempt to piggy-back on the popularity of previous leaders.

A Private Military
We’ve fought in Afghanistan for 16 years now. Are we making progress?
After 9/11, we invaded, overthrew the Taliban, killed Osama Bin Laden and — stayed. Afghanistan is now America’s longest war, ever.
President Trump’s solution? He’ll send several thousand more soldiers.
Erik Prince says he has a better idea — fight terrorists with only 2,000 American Special Operations personnel, plus “a contractor force” of 6,000.
Prince is the founder of Blackwater, the private military contractor.
The military uses contractors to provide security, deliver mail, rescue soldiers and more. Private contractors often do jobs well, for much less than the government would spend.
“We did a helicopter resupply mission,” Prince told me. “We showed up with two helicopters and eight people — the Navy was doing it with 35 people.”
I asked, “Why would the Navy use 35 people?”
Prince answered, “The admiral that says, ‘I need 35 people to do that mission,’ didn’t pay for them. When you get a free good, you use a lot more of it.”
Prince also claims the military is slow to adjust. In Afghanistan, it’s “using equipment designed to fight the Soviet Union, (not ideal) for finding enemies living in caves or operating from a pickup truck.”
I suggested that the government eventually adjusts.

One problem is that we need both a military that can fight against the military of Russia and China and one that can operate in the wild areas. The ideas of having a commitment of 2000 special operators and 6000 contractors as the strike force. It is an interesting idea and is providing a mix of national soldiers and contractors, we have to be careful not to get into the use of contractors so far that they take the place of the national military in all roles because then the contractors will eventually decide to take over. Also Contractors who ar US citizens rather then ones who are foreign nationals are less likely to try and seize control of the nation. This is an idea that needs to be looked at and debated. The worlds nations eventually quite using privateers becasue of problems with them drifting into outright piracy. There are some other problems that could arise but the idea should be debated.
The private army of the British East India Company was eventually taken over by the British government and integrated into the British Army but for over a 100 years it protect Company property and fought wars against local Princes who wanted to seize all of the Company property.
Putin uses mercenaries.
Post-Afghanistan Russia has a real low tolerance for body-bags. Mercenary bodies aren’t sent back, don’t attract attention.
Iran uses Pakis and Afghans.
The Gulf states have an entire Foreign Legion, but Latin Americans, and especially Colombians are popular.
You have to be careful when using mercs because of the fear that they will either turn on you or try to seize power in your nation. This is why mercs from your own nation are the best ones to use. Another problem is that when the citizens get use to the government using mercs fewer and fewer are willing to fight for the nation. This refusal to serve in the military is what caused the destruction of Rome, not the mercs but the Romans refusing to serve. As I said Special Operators with mercs for the strike force would be a good mix as long as we don’t get to depend on the mercs and not our oen men.
