Couple shot dead over illicit sexual relations in North of Afghanistan (khaama, Oct 15, 2017)
http://www.khaama.com/couple-shot-dead-over-illicit-sexual-relations-in-north-of-afghanistan-03646
“A couple was shot dead by unknown armed men over alleged illicit sexual relations in northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan.
According to the local officials, the incident took place recently in the vicinity of Shebarghan city, the provincial capital of Jawzjan province.
Provincial governor’s spokesman Reza Ghafoori confirmed the incident ad said the couple was shot dead by the armed men late on Saturday night.
He said the security forces have launched an investigation into the incident and a search operation has also been launched to arrest the perpetrators.
Ghafoori further added that no suspect has been arrested in connection to the horrific murder so far.
According to reports, the woman was a widow who was charged with illicit sexual relations with the brother of her husband.
In the meantime, the local residents have also confirmed that the woman and her brother-in-law were shot dead by unknown armed men over the illicit relations.
The latest involving the murder of the couple comes as there has been a sharp rise in the violence against women in several provinces of the country.
A woman was shot dead after she was accused of a similar crime in this province nearly two months ago.
The woman was reportedly shot dead by her brother who had accused her of having illicit relations with another man.”
Afghanistan rejects Pak military’s allegations against CIA, MI6, RAW for support ISIS (khaama, Oct 15, 2017)
http://www.khaama.com/afghanistan-rejects-pak-militarys-allegations-against-cia-mi6-raw-for-support-isis-03648
“The Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan rejected the allegations by certain Pakistani military officials regarding the alleged support by CIA, MI6, and RAW to ISIS terrorist group in Afghanistan.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan Gen. Dawlat Waziri told RFE that the terror group’s ranks in Afghanistan are mainly comprised of Orakzai Agency residents who are continuously being deployed by certain circles in Pakistan.
Gen. Waziri further added that the ISIS militants are mainly fighting in the eastern provinces of Afghanistan located along the Durand Line with Pakistan.
He said such allegations are baseless suggesting that America supports ISIS as the US forces have so far killed four leaders of the terror group which proves that the allegations are wrong.
According to Gen. Waziri, the US military was truly supporting the ISIS terrorist group then they would not target their leaders in Afghanistan.
This comes as certain Pakistani military officials have told The News media outlet in Pakistan that it is an established fact, though quite deplorable, that the top world intelligence agencies like RAW, CIA and MI6 are supporting ISIS in Afghanistan which has its impact on Pakistan too.
According to these sources “We also understand that Afghanistan, India and USA would endeavour to snoop into Balochistan in order to sabotage China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) for which an ingress would be needed by ISIS into Pakistan, as is the conviction and planning of the aforementioned prominent intelligence agencies”.”
2 key terror leaders killed in Marawi: Philippines (gulfnews, Oct 16, 2017)
http://gulfnews.com/news/asia/philippines/2-key-terror-leaders-killed-in-marawi-philippines-1.2106455
“Philippine security officials said the two final surviving leaders of a deadly siege in the south, including a top Asian terror suspect, were killed on Monday in one of the final battles by thousands of troops to retake the last area held by pro-Daesh militants in southern Marawi city.
Four military and police officials said that Isnilon Hapilon, who is listed among the FBI’s most-wanted terror suspects, and Omarkhayam Maute were killed in a gun battle and their bodies were found Monday in Marawi.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to make a public announcement yet of the latest developments in Marawi.
Military leaders had said in September that three leaders of the militants who besieged the southern city in May were killed in the months of fighting but the two still alive were leading a final stand.
At least 17 hostages, including an infant and women, were rescued by troops in the scene of the battle, which the officials said may finally end this week.”

Turkish army expands deployment in Syria (hurriyetdailynews, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-army-expands-deployment-in-syrias-northwest-120895
“The Turkish military has been expanding its deployment in northwest Syria with the goal of encircling militants of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Idlib province, as part of a deal to reduce clashes.
Turkey is building a barrier against the YPG’s ambition to unite its forces in the isolated Afrin region, north of Idlib, with the rest of its positions in Jendaris in the Barakat Mountains.
The military has deployed tanks and Stinger missiles, backed by receptors and a hi-tech computer system, in Idlib. Armed drones are also reportedly conducting surveillance flights.
A convoy of Turkish troops entered Syria near the Bab al-Hawa border crossing on Oct. 12. It was the first such deployment since last year, when Ankara launched a major ground and air offensive to clear YPG and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants from its last stretch of border with Turkey.
At least four convoys carrying scores of armored vehicles and equipment have been stationed in several locations in the first phase of a deployment that is expected to deepen inside rebel-held Idlib, opposition sources said.
“Nearly 200 troops are now stationed in areas that separate territory under control of Kurdish groups and opposition groups,” said Ibrahim al-Idlibi, a military adviser in the opposition’s Free Syrian Army (FSA), which is backed by Turkey.
Witnesses said Turkish bulldozers were working around the clock, digging fortifications and setting up observation posts.
A new deployment of Turkish armored vehicles and personnel arrived along the Syrian border on Oct. 14, positioned on the Turkish side, witnesses said.
“Turkish forces are still in a state of advancing and expanding,” said Mustafa al Sejari, an FSA official.
Turkey says its operations there, along with the FSA, is part of a deal it reached last month with Russia and Iran in Kazakhstan to reduce fighting between insurgents and the Syrian government.
Parliament Spokesperson ?smail Kahraman said on Oct. 14 that Ankara and Moscow are working in “close coordination” on Syria.
“Multifaceted cooperation with Russia is one of the key elements of our foreign policy. We are in close coordination on Syria as well,”
Kahraman told a news conference in St. Petersburg after a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vyaceslav Volodin.
Syria on Oct. 14 denounced the Turkish move, saying it was a flagrant violation of its sovereignty and demanding that Ankara pull out its troops.
FSA rebel groups said the goal of the campaign was to push deeper into the province, with the expansion of supply lines and observation posts. The jihadists would be retreating further south in a phased withdrawal.
“The Turks will be taking up positions 40 km deep inside Idlib as agreed,” Idlibi said.
The goal is ultimately to create a contiguous stretch that goes from Bab al-Hawa all the way to Jarablus city, west of Euphrates River and as far south as the city of al-Bab, widening a pocket of the northern border under the control of Turkey-backed rebels.
Many residents in the towns of Idlib province, where more than 2 million people live, have welcomed the arrival of Turkish troops, Reuters reported.
They are seen as a bulwark against heavy Russian and Syrian army bombardment to crush the rebel province that would cause massive devastation and high civilian casualties.
“The Turks presented the factions of the FSA the military and logistical support so that Idlib escapes the fate of Deir Zor or Raqqa,” said Colonel Abdul Jabar Akaidi, a commander in the FSA in the north.
Heavily-populated Idlib has been the target of hundreds of strikes by the Russia and Syrian air forces in the past year that has killed hundreds of civilians and destroyed hospitals and civil defense centers.
Six months of relative peace under a Turkish-Russian understanding that gave a temporary reprieve to thousands of people was shattered when Russia resumed an intensive bombing campaign last month when jihadists launched an offensive against Syrian army positions.”
Clashes between Iraqi, Kurdish forces as govt troops advance on Kirkuk (france24, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.france24.com/en/20171016-iraq-troops-advance-kurdish-held-kirkuk-peshmerga-pkk
“Iraqi and Kurdish forces exchanged artillery fire early Monday south of the city of Kirkuk, after central government forces began a “major operation” to take control of a Kurdish military base and oil fields.
Shortly before, state television announced that government troops had taken “large areas” of the province from Kurdish peshmerga fighters “without fighting”, although military sources on both sides reported exchange of Katyusha rocket fire to the south of the provincial capital.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who said this week that he was “not going… to make war on our Kurdish citizens”, has “given orders to armed forces to take over security in Kirkuk,” state television said.
Iraqi troops will “secure bases and government facilities in Kirkuk province” the government said. They are aiming to retake military bases and oil fields which Kurdish peshmerga fighters took in 2014 during the fightback against the Islamic State jihadist group.
Multiple peshmergas were injured in the clashes and hospitalised in Kirkuk, a local security source said.
Abadi said that members of the Hashed al-Shaabi, the paramilitary Popular Mobilisation forces, which are dominated by Iran-backed Shiite militias, would stay away from Kirkuk, where there have been multiple demonstrations against their involvement in the dispute.
“Counter terrorism units, the 9th armoured division of the army, and the federal police have recovered control of important areas of Kirkuk province without fighting,” a general from the counter terrorism force said.
A counter terrorism force source said that their units had retaken the industrial zone of Kirkuk. At the same time, a local security source said four military vehicles were burned in an explosion.
Further south, two people were killed in artillery exchanges at Tuz Khurmatu, 75 kilometres from Kirkuk, which has been shaken every night since Friday by fighting between the peshmerga and Hashed al-Shaabi, a doctor at a city hospital said.
An AFP photographer saw columns of Iraqi troops heading north from the town of Taza Khurmatu, which is located south of Kirkuk.
The advance came days after a standoff between Kurdish forces and the Iraqi army and the expiry of a deadline for Kurdish peshmerga fighters to withdraw from the areas they have controlled since 2014.
‘Declaration of war’
Iraqi forces are seeking the “K1 base”, just eight kilometres (five miles) north of Kirkuk, which was one of the main Iraqi army bases before it was taken over by the peshmerga in 2014.
It stands near an oil refinery, The Iraqi troops also hope to retake the nearby airport.
Earlier Sunday, Iraq’s National Security Council said it viewed as a “declaration of war” the presence of “fighters not belonging to the regular security forces in Kirkuk”, including fighters from Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Crisis talks on Sunday made little headway in resolving an armed standoff between Kurdish and Iraqi forces in the province.
Tensions have soared between the central government and Iraqi Kurds since they overwhelmingly voted for independence in a September 25 referendum, whose results Baghdad has demanded be nullified…”

A man who drove through raging wildfires in Portugal says luck was on his side after he filmed himself escaping the deadly blazes ravaging the region.
Wildfires have killed at least 33 people across Portugal and Spain as hundreds of blazes were fanned by strong winds caused by a hurricane, authorities said on Monday.
At least 29 people in Portugal have died and dozens have been injured, most of them firefighters, during fires raging in central and northern areas of the country. A one-month-old baby is still unaccounted for.
In the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia, authorities said that four people had died, two of them trapped in a car, as a result of blazes that were threatening inhabited areas prompting the evacuation of thousands.
Authorities in both countries said that the strong winds from Hurricane Ophelia in the Atlantic Ocean and high temperatures fanned the fires.
Investigations were also focusing on human and criminal causes, with political leaders accusing ‘terrorist arsonists’ of starting the blazes.
Survivor Renato Teixeira, from Coimbra, posted a video of his near escape on the A17 motorway near Vagos, Portugal, on his Facebook page alongside the message: ‘Today luck was on my side. I was dying.’

Portugal and Spain wildfires: Death toll soars to dozens
At least 31 people have died in a series of wildfires in Portugal, the country’s civil protection service says.
A spokeswoman for the agency told reporters that firefighters were still tackling 145 separate fires – dozens of which were still considered serious.
Across the border in Spain’s Galicia region, at least three people are dead.
More than 50 people have also been injured on the Portuguese side of the border.
Local media reports about the victims say several people are still missing in Portugal, including a one-month old baby, while in Spain, two of the victims were found in a burned-out car by the side of the road.
Thousands of firefighters are battling the flames, which erupted across north-eastern Portugal and parts of Spain over the weekend after a hot dry summer.
Conditions were worsened by Hurricane Ophelia, which is approaching Europe’s western coast, bringing strong winds to fan and spread the flames.
Rain is forecast for the affected regions late on Monday.

Spain Rejects Catalan Reply, Paving Way for Suspending Self-Rule

Spain rejected Catalan President Carles Puigdemont’s response to demands he clarify his position on independence, clearing the path for the government to suspend the region’s self-rule.
Puigdemont has until 10 a.m. Thursday to back down, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said in a televised statement Monday. If he persists, the central government will step up its response, she said.
Puigdemont earlier Monday told Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy that he has a mandate from Catalan voters to declare independence, but he’s suspended that process to allow an opportunity for dialogue.
Government Lawyers Ask Judge To Block Release Of Comey Memos

Government lawyers want a federal judge to block the release of memos written by former FBI Director James Comey about his conversations with President Trump, claiming that disclosing the documents would be “detrimental” to an investigation into Russian interference in the presidential campaign as well as an ongoing obstruction of justice probe.
The attorneys made the argument in a court filing submitted late Friday in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed for the Comey memos by several news organizations, including The Daily Caller News Foundation, CNN, and USA Today.

The Black Death is killing people: Why is Madagascar facing its worst plague outbreak in years?
Madagascar sees cases of plague nearly every year in the rainy season.
This year is different. Instead of cases in the hinterlands where plague is endemic, the disease — which is initially spread by flea bites and was known as the Black Death in medieval times — has spread to the capital, Antananarivo, and other densely populated cities for the first time, killing 45 people and sparking panic.
By Monday, 387 cases had been reported, including 167 in the densely populated capital.
The biggest problem for authorities trying to control the outbreak is that it took two weeks after the first case to detect it, and that most cases — 277 so far — have been a particularly virulent form of the disease.
http://www.latimes.com/world/africa/la-fg-madagascar-plague-20171013-htmlstory.html
How long will it be before the shortage of food, water adn shelter spread more diseases like this one? And how long before the Islamic Invaders will spread them to Europe and the US? The US is already seeing the return of several diseases that we thought were things of the past that the illegal aliens have brought back to the US. How long before the real killer ones resurface? How long before someone decides to use the new “natural” epidemics as the cover for the use of some very nasty bio weapons?
Very under the radar, the major hospitals are preparing. At least around here, since we’re a medical-center hub.
Drills all the time. Quarantine locations, National Guard exercises.

U.S. Military to Begin Drills to Evacuate Americans From South Korea
SEOUL, South Korea — The United States military said on Monday that it would practice evacuating noncombatant Americans out of South Korea in the event of war and other emergencies, as the two allies began a joint naval exercise amid heightened tensions with North Korea.
The evacuation drill, known as Courageous Channel, is scheduled from next Monday through Friday and is aimed at preparing American “service members and their families to respond to a wide range of crisis management events such as noncombatant evacuation and natural or man-made disasters,” the United States military said in a statement.
It has been conducting similar noncombatant evacuation exercises for decades, along with other joint military exercises with South Korea. But when tensions escalate with North Korea, as they have recently, such drills draw outsize attention and ignite fear among South Koreans, some of whom take them as a sign that the United States might be preparing for military action against the North.

Iraq launches advance on Kurdish territory, seizes Kirkuk outskirts
BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) – Iraq’s central government forces launched an advance early on Monday into territory held by Kurds, seizing a swathe of countryside surrounding the oil city of Kirkuk in a bold military response to a Kurdish vote last month on independence.
The government said its troops had captured Kirkuk airport, advanced to the city’s gates and taken control of northern Iraq’s oil company from the security forces of the autonomous Kurdish region, known as Peshmerga.
Baghdad described the advance as largely unopposed, and called on the Peshmerga to cooperate in keeping the peace. But the Peshmerga said Baghdad would be made to pay “a heavy price” for triggering “war on the Kurdistan people”.

ran’s retaliatory move creates pretext for peremptory establishment of Kurdish state
By J.E. Dyer October 16, 2017
With the stately-paced diplomatic contradances of the Pax Americana disappearing on the rear horizon, now would be a good time to adjust our brains to the “return of history.”
This is not to say that the return of history is a good thing, or that we should rush eagerly to participate in it as if the last 70 years never even happened.
It is, however, to say that after eight years of the Obama presidency, we do not have the means anymore to reinforce a retaining wall against history’s return. It’s already happening – has been happening for several years – and we cannot stop it. It is reality now, and it is what will shape the course of events. The stasis in which the world largely constrained itself to observe limits set by American power exists no more.

– FRANCE – PARIS – Pyromaniac artist who nailed scrotum to Red Square sets Bank of France entrance ablaze
Pyotr Pavlensky, an artist from St. Petersburg who gained worldwide notoriety after nailing his scrotum to the cobblestones of Moscow’s Red Square, has set the entrance to the Bank of France in Paris on fire.
It is not clear what Pavlensky’s message was, but a Femen activist apparently quoted the artist as saying that “the revival of revolutionary France will trigger the global fire of revolutions.”
“The bankers have taken the place of the monarchs,” another quote reads.
Pavlensky received political asylum in France earlier this year after he fled Russia with his partner and their children following sexual assault allegations.
In an interview with Russian TV channel Rain, Pavlensky said that his family lives “like true French: we do not work and we do not pay.” He said that he “seized” the house in Paris he lives in and resorts to “taking food” from the shops. “The security here is not very attentive,” the artist said.

Exiled Russian artist torches central bank branch in Paris
PARIS (AFP) –
Controversial Russian performance artist Piotr Pavlensky, who was granted asylum in France in May, was taken into custody early Monday after setting fire to the outside of a Banque de France branch in central Paris, police said.
Firefighters arrived the scene at around 4:00 am (0200 GMT) to put out two fires outside of the building in Bastille square, a spokesman said, adding that the incident was of “criminal origin”.
Photos on social media show the 33-year-old dressed in black, standing in front of the shuttered front door flanked by fires burning outside two windows.
Pavlensky, a recipient of the Vaclav Havel award for creative dissent, was taken into custody along with his partner Oksana Shalygina for causing “damage by fire”, police said.
Pavlensky once memorably nailed his scrotum to Red Square to denounce state power. In November 2015, he doused the doors of the FSB — the successor to the Cold War-era KGB, or secret police — in petrol and set them on fire.
On Monday, a Banque de France spokesman told AFP the bank’s entrance was damaged but the security systems were not affected.
“The building is still secure,” although the Bastille branch will remain closed until further notice, he added.
Pavlensky gained a reputation for challenging Russian restrictions on political freedoms in radical, often painful performances that have won international acclaim.
While best known for his 2013 Red Square performance entitled “Fixation”, he also sewed his lips together to protest against the jailing of members of the feminist punk group Pussy Riot.
He has also wrapped himself in barbed wire and chopped off part of his ear.
After the FSB stunt, Pavlensky was handed a fine of 500,000 rubles ($8,700, 7,400 euros) and released after being found guilty of damaging a cultural site.
Pavlensky spent a month last year in a notorious psychiatric hospital undergoing state-ordered tests of his sanity that found him sound of mind.

Boycotting the boycotters.

Life comes at you fast.
In July, Dan Fishback, a member of the militantly anti-Israel JVP Artists Council, was writing up arguments for boycotting Israeli plays for the militantly anti-Israel site, The Forward.
Now the cold winds of fall blow through the glass towers of Manhattan and Dan Fishback in back in The Forward with a brand new message. “My Play Was Just Canceled Because I’m Not Pro-Israel.”
Boycotting plays is fun and games until it happens to you. And that’s just wrong.
The left packs the same moral compass as your average playground bully. It’s okay to punch other kids in the face. It’s not okay when they punch you back.

The Beginning of the End of Progressive Domination?
The overreach of the Left’s response to Trump’s victory — and its consequences.
October 16, 2017
Bruce Thornton
For over forty years the left has been successfully reshaping American culture. Social mores and government policies about sexuality, marriage, the sexes, race relations, morality, and ethics have changed radically. The collective wisdom of the human race that we call tradition has been marginalized or discarded completely. The role of religion in public life has been reduced to a private preference. And politics has been increasingly driven by the assumptions of progressivism: internationalism privileged over nationalism, centralization of power over its dispersal in federalism, elitist technocracy over democratic republicanism, “human sciences” over common sense, and dependent clients over autonomous citizens.
But the election of Donald Trump, and the overreach of the left’s response to that victory, suggest that we may be seeing the beginning of the end of the left’s cultural, social, and political dominance.

The media’s formula is simple. Tragedy + Trump = Story.
After trying to make Texas into Trump’s Katrina and then trying to make Puerto Rico into Trump’s Katrina, it was on to the California wildfires.
If Trump tweets about them, surely the wildfires will go out.
Isn’t everything Trump does a crime against humanity? But clearly those regulations are working well. Or maybe the fires sensed that Trump would nix them and preemptively broke out.

It’s Iran vs. the Kurds in Iraq
October 16, 2017
Daniel Greenfield
Obama’s mismanagement of Iraq is now moving into its second phase.
His neglect of Iraq turned over Baghdad and the central government into an Iranian Shiite proxy. That drove the Kurds toward independence and the Sunnis toward ISIS.
Obama allied with Iran’s Shiite puppets in Baghdad to take on ISIS. Meanwhile the terror bosses in Iran got billions in smuggled money, countless more billions in sanctions relief, and a blank check for its nuclear program.
The tanks and other weapons that America sent to the puppet regime in Baghdad either ended up going to ISIS or the Shiite fighters. And now the latter are using our weapons and training to attack the Kurds.

The former presidential candidate was due to speak about why she lost the 2016 US presidential election to Republican Donald Trump.
Presenter Jane Garvey apologised to listeners close to the programme’s end, saying: “Hillary Clinton has been delayed this morning, as I’ve already said … she’s not going to make it before the end of the programme. I’m really, really sorry about that. I think you probably understand just how sorry I am.
“But we are working very, very hard to get this interview rescheduled and Hillary Clinton is very apologetic.
“So what can I say, that’s the situation.”
It follows a string of late arrivals by the former US secretary of state over the weekend.
Mrs Clinton was about 45 minutes late for a speech at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on Sunday to promote her new book, What Happened.
She was also delayed a similar amount of time on Saturday, when she was presented with an honorary doctorate at Swansea University.
Meanwhile, her husband Bill was forced to postpone a planned intervention in Northern Ireland’s political stalemate because of storm Ophelia.
The Press Association understands the former US president had been due in the region on Monday to meet warring political parties as they continue to struggle to reach a deal to restore the collapsed Executive.
But the visit was called off at late notice due to the severe weather warnings. It is understood the visit may still take place on Tuesday.”
Malta CAR BOMB: Explosion at tourist hotspot leaves at least one dead (express, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/867182/Malta-car-bomb-explosion-tourist-hotspot-one-dead-Caruana-Galizia-Bidnija-north-Malta
“A MASSIVE car bomb has exploded at a tourist hotspot in Malta, leaving at least one person dead, according to reports.
The bomb was detonated near the village of Bidnija in northern Malta after 3pm.
Local police said that the explosion killed Caruana Galizia, 53, a prominent investigative journalist, who ran a very poplar blog.
Police said that she was killed as she was driving near Bidnija.
The Times of Malta newspaper reported that her body was blasted out of the car and into a nearby field.
Ms Galizia’s blog relentlessly highlighted cases of alleged corruption, often involving politicians from the Mediterranean island.
Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who faced accusations of wrong-doing by Ms Galizia earlier this year, denounced her killing, calling it a “barbaric attack on press freedom”.
He said: ”I will not rest until I see justice done in this case. Our country deserves justice.”
Mr Muscat called early elections in June as a vote of confidence to counter Ms Galizia’s allegations of corruption.
She said documents in a small Malta-based bank showed that Muscat’s wife was the beneficial owner of a company in Panama, and that large sums of money had been moved between the company and bank accounts in Azerbaijan…”
Wipe them out! French army chief says anti-ISIS coalition must show jihadists (express, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/867170/French-army-chief-Florence-Parly-anti-ISIS-coalition-jihadists-Syria
“FRENCH defence minister Florence Parly says that US-backed forces fighting Islamic State (ISIS) in Raqqa, the terror group’s crumbling Syrian stronghold, had to “neutralise” a maximum number of jihadists in order to take back full control of the city.
Battle-hardened radical Islamist militants hiding out in the Syrian city of Raqqa are expected to fight to the death, but scores have been forced to surrender in recent weeks.
Mrs Parly told Europe 1 radio said: “France and its allies are working together to destroy Daesh (the Arabic acronym for ISIS), and we are all doing everything within our power to make that happen.
“We will fight until the end, and if jihadists are killed (by US-backed forces) fighting in Raqqa then good…”
Italy facing referendum CRISIS: Lega Nord promises devolution votes across nation (express, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/867148/Italy-referendum-Catalonia-Milan-Venice-Veneto-Lombardy-Lega-Nord-Matteo-Salvini
“ITALY is facing a huge constitutional crisis as a top politician vowed devolution votes could be held across the country following two ballots this weekend.
Controversial referendums are being held in the wealthy Lombardy and Veneto regions with sweeping new local powers at stake for their regional governments in Milan and Venice.
The landmark polls will be held on October 22, drawing parallels to the havoc which has swept Spain after the unofficial Catalan independence vote.
Now the right-wing Lega Nord party are calling for a referendum on separating the region of Emilia-Romagna into two sections.
And Lega Nord leader, Matteo Salvini pledged that, if Sunday’s votes are successful, there could be more across Italy.
He told the Corriere Della Sera: “Until Sunday, the only thing to talk about is the referendum.
“And if they go well in Lombardy and Veneto, the next day I will propose more referendums in Piedmont, Apulia, Abruzzo and Liguria.”
He claimed the independence push would be a boost to people with disabilities, funding research and investment in small businesses away from Rome’s central government and its financial cutbacks…”
Junker fears Catalonia crisis to cause UPRISING in EU with 98 STATES wanting say (express, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/867200/Catalonia-referendum-crisis-Spain-independence-European-Union-Jean-Claude-Juncker-uprising
“JEAN-CLAUDE Juncker admitted he was fearful the crisis in Catalonia could cause a dramatic uprising in the European Union, with 98 states wanting their say on Brussels’ future.
The European Commission President has again dismissed the possibility of a European mediation in Spain, as he claimed the Catalan independence debate was not the EU’s businesses.
Mr Juncker’s position on the referendum has been no secret, after he repeatedly told reporters in three languages that the referendum of October 1 was not legal and would not be accepted by the EU.
But he has also now revealed his private fears that if Catalonia succeeds in separating from Spain, the independence debate could cause a rise in separatist movements across the continent.
And he insisted Brussels could not cope if its current 28 members, soon to be 27 once Britain leaves the bloc, saw a massive rise to 98 if autonomous regions sought their freedom.
The EC President said: “If we allow it, even if it is not just our business, the independence of Catalonia, others will do the same. I would not like that.
“I would not like a European Union with 98 state in 15 years. It is already relatively difficult with 28 states.
“It will not be easy with 27, but with 98 I imagine it as something completely impossible.”
At a ceremony in Luxembourg, Mr Juncker said that “some time ago” he asked the Spanish president to take initiatives to deal with the situation in Catalonia…”
Elite Iraqi forces recapture ‘vast areas’ of Kirkuk from Kurdish control (express, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/867023/iraq-army-capture-vast-areas-kirkuk-kurdish-military
“IRAQI government forces took control of “vast areas” in the region of Kirkuk, including oilfields west of the city, in the early hours of today, Iraqi state TV said, but the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) disputed the assertions.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered security forces “to impose security in Kirkuk in cooperation with the population of the city and the Peshmerga”, the TV reports said.
The elite, US-trained “Counter Terrorism Service, the 9th armoured division and Federal Police have taken control of vast areas of Kirkuk without confrontations”, it said, and oilfields and Kurdish military positions were captured.
However, a KRG security official denied that Iraqi forces were able to get closer to the city or take territory from the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.
The official told Reuters the oilfields and the air base west of Kirkuk were still under Kurdish control…”

“ROME, Oct 16 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – On World Food Day, religious, political and humanitarian leaders have called for more action to end hunger, which has begun to rise for the first time in more than a decade.
POPE FRANCIS
Deaths due to hunger or to abandoning one’s land have now become everyday news, and there is the danger that this will lead to indifference.
Clearly wars and climate change are a cause of hunger, let us then not present hunger as though it were some sort of incurable disease.
Food resources are frequently exposed to speculation that aims simply to ensure the economic advantage of the major producers … and not meeting the real needs of human beings. This ultimately leads to conflict and to waste, and increases the number of the people on earth who are seeking a future far away from their homes, their lands of origin.
We need to change direction … the fruits of the earth must be available to all…”

‘The EU is a criminal institution!’ Spanish MEP unleashes FURY at G6 (express, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/867225/G6-summit-EU-Seville-Marina-Albiol-Spain
“A SPANISH MEP branded the European Union a “criminal institution” today as she blasted the bloc for linking migrants with terrorists at the G6 summit.
She lashed out as the summit met in Seville to discuss common EU policy on organised crime, human trafficking, mass migration and the threat from Islamic extremists.
Spanish interior minister Juan Ignacio Zoido was joined by his counterparts from the UK, France Germany, Italy and Poland to discuss the threats.
But MEP Marina Albiol hit out at the EU in a Twitter tirade, accusing Brussels of “racism and xenophobia in its purest form” for linking the issues.
She wrote: “The EU is nothing more than a criminal institution at the service of the powerful.
“This has always been like that.
“It was the way it was conceived.
“In the #CriminalSummit of the G-6 in Seville they link migration with terrorism. Racism and xenophobia in its purest form.
“The EU intends to fight terrorism by persecuting migrants and not by pointing out those who cause wars and support dictatorships.
“Don’t criminalise refugees. Condemn US and EU-led wars in the Middle East.”
She went on: “Seeing that racism and xenophobia are being promoted from European institutions, it is clear that the extreme right has already won.”
Speaking ahead of today’s event, Mr Zoido said the current high level of migration had led to “unprecedented” security challenge for the bloc…”
EU sends Mogherini to fight for Iran deal in Washington
LUXEMBOURG/MOSCOW: The EU is to dispatch its chief diplomat Federica Mogherini to Washington next month to fight for the Iran nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump threatened to tear it up.
EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg on Monday joined a chorus of international support for the landmark 2015 accord, warning that Trump’s hard-line stance jeopardized efforts to find a peaceful solution to the nuclear crisis with North Korea.
Trump caused alarm across the Atlantic with a belligerent speech on Friday in which he stopped short of pulling out of the agreement but warned he could do so at any time, restating his belief that the deal was letting Iran off the hook.
He left it to the US Congress to decide whether to reimpose sanctions that were lifted in return for Tehran abandoning its nuclear ambitions.
Mogherini, the EU’s foreign policy head, said she would “be in Washington in early November” to urge US lawmakers not to pull out of the deal, known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was negotiated with Iran over 12 painstaking years by the US, Britain, France, China, Germany and Russia.
Ditching the deal when Tehran has repeatedly been certified as keeping up its end of the bargain by UN inspectors would send a signal to North Korea that negotiating with the international community is a waste of time, EU ministers fear.
“Clearly the ministers are concerned about the fact that messages on the JCPOA might affect negatively the possibility of opening negotiations or opening even the space for negotiations with the DPRK,” Mogherini told reporters after the bloc’s 28 foreign ministers held talks in Luxembourg.
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Trump’s hard-line stance risked dragging the world back to a “military confrontation” with Iran.
“The threatened termination of the deal with Iran of course undermines the credibility of such international treaties,” he said.
The leaders of France, Britain and Germany gave a rebuke to Trump in a joint statement on Friday, which said the deal remained “in our shared national security interest.”
Russia and China also voiced their support for the agreement. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned that any rupture would be “extremely damaging.”
EU officials have already been lobbying members of Congress not to turn their backs on the accord, which was endorsed unanimously by the UN Security Council, and Mogherini, touted as a Nobel Peace Prize candidate for her work on the deal, had already delivered an angry retort to Trump on Friday.
“It is clearly not in the hands of any president of any country in the world to terminate an agreement of this sort. The president of the United States has many powers (but) not this one,” she said.
Diplomats say that European powers share some of Trump’s concerns about Iran’s activities not covered by the nuclear deal — notably its ballistic missile program and involvement in numerous Middle East conflicts, including the war in Syria.
But they say these should be dealt with in other forums and warn it would be a calamitous mistake to sacrifice the achievement of the nuclear deal.
Meanwhile, Ali Larijani, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, said that Tehran had a specific plan of action if the US withdrew from the nuclear pact and that Washington would regret any such decision, the Interfax news agency reported.
Larijani made the statement in St. Petersburg where he was taking part in a parliamentary forum.

EU’s Mogherini vows to defend Iran deal despite Trump
The EU’s chief diplomat Federica Mogherini announced Monday she will visit Washington early next month to defend the Iran nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump threatened to tear it up.
Mogherini said she would “be in Washington in early November” to urge US lawmakers not to pull out of the landmark 2015 deal curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme in return for the lifting of punitive sanctions.
EU foreign ministers on Monday warned that the hardline stance on Tehran that Trump outlined in a belligerent speech on Friday undermined any chance of dialogue with North Korea over its nuclear weapons.
“Clearly the ministers are concerned about the fact that messages on the JCPOA (the Iran deal) might affect negatively the possibility of opening negotiations or opening even the space for negotiations with the DPRK,” Mogherini told reporters after the bloc’s 28 foreign ministers held talks in Luxembourg.

[...some important details missing in the description of the aggressors...]CBC – MONTREAL – EMSB students suspended after videotaped attack on teen in Rivière-des-Prairies
The English Montreal School Board has suspended four of its students indefinitely after a teenager was attacked off school property in a Rivière-des-Prairies park.
The assault of the Grade Nine student at Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North was captured on cellphone video.
“The student was checked out, he has some bruises but fortunately — and miraculously, for anyone who saw the video — he is okay and he’ll be fine,” said EMSB spokesperson Michael Cohen. “Shaken up, obviously, by the situation.”
A copy of the video given to the CBC is less than a minute long. It begins with a group of four talking to the victim when one of them suddenly punches him in the head.
The victim falls to the ground, at which point he is repeatedly kicked by the group of four. As he covers his face, he is then punched in the head and jumped on by one student.
Several students can be seen in the video, watching the attack. A couple of them urge the group to stop the beating, and some turn away when the victim is kicked, but no one intervenes.
“Okay, guys — stop! It’s enough,” one witness yells, toward the end of the video.
The group of four eventually backs off, leaving the victim alone on the ground.
Police investigation underway
The video was brought to the board’s attention on Wednesday morning. All four attackers have since been identified as EMSB students, said Cohen.
They have been suspended indefinitely.
“They were clearly identifiable on the video,” he said. “The principal and head teacher of the respective schools where the perpetrators go took action immediately.”
“The police were called — the police will be taking action.”
Dany Marin, the commander of the local police station in Rivière-des-Prairies, said an investigation is underway, and the students could be facing assault charges.
“We will quickly move forward with arrests in this file because the perpetrators are identified,” said Marin.
The EMSB will also be conducting its own investigation to determine what happened and who took the recording of the video, said Cohen. The school will also be in contact with the victim.
“The principal will be speaking to the family in more detail to get more information as to why and how this happened.”

Iraqi forces seize oil city Kirkuk from Kurds in bold advance (reuters, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-iraq-kurds-kirkuk/iraqi-forces-seize-oil-city-kirkuk-from-kurds-in-bold-advance-idUSKBN1CK0XL
“Iraqi government forces captured the major Kurdish-held oil city of Kirkuk on Monday, responding to a Kurdish referendum on independence with a bold lightning strike that transforms the balance of power in the country.
A convoy of armored vehicles from Iraq’s elite U.S.-trained Counter-Terrorism Force seized Kirkuk’s provincial government headquarters on Monday afternoon, less than a day after the operation began, a Reuters reporter in Kirkuk said.
Neither side gave a casualty toll for the operation. But an aid group working in Kirkuk said several Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Iraqi soldiers had been killed in an overnight clash south of the city – the only serious fighting reported.
As Iraqi forces advanced, Kurdish operators briefly shut some 350,000 barrels per day of oil output at two large Kirkuk fields, citing security concerns, oil ministry sources on both sides said. But production resumed shortly thereafter following an Iraqi threat to seize fields under Kurdish management if they did not do so, according to the sources.
It was not immediately clear whether or when the Iraqi government would seek to retake control of all Kirkuk oilfields, a vital source of revenue for the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The short suspension in production helped push up world oil prices as the shutdown represented more than half of total Kurdish output.[O/R]
A dozen Iraqi armored vehicles arrived at the provincial government headquarters in Kirkuk and took up positions nearby, alongside local police. They pulled down the Kurdish flag and left the Iraqi flag flying.
THOUSANDS OF KURDS FLEE
Thousands of Kurdish civilians fled the city of 1 million people for fear of reprisals. A Kurdish father of four who was driving out of Kirkuk towards the Kurdish regional capital Erbil to the north said: “We no longer feel safe. We hope to return to our home but right now we feel it’s dangerous for us to stay.”
Crowds of ethnic Turkmen who opposed Kurdish control of the city were celebrating. Some drove in convoys with Iraqi flags and fired shots in the air.
“This day should become a holiday, we’re so happy to have gotten rid of Barzani’s party,” said a man celebrating on a motorbike, waving the blue-and-white flag of Iraq’s Turkmen, referring to the Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani.
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that Washington would not take sides in the matter but ”we don’t like the fact that they’re clashing.
“We’ve had for many years a very good relationship with the Kurds as you know and we’ve also been on the side of Iraq, even though we should have never been there in the first place.”
U.S. officials called for calm on both sides, seeking to avert an all-out conflict between Baghdad and the Kurds that would open an entirely new front in Iraq’s 14-year-old civil war and potentially draw in regional powers such as Turkey and Iran.
The Baghdad central government considers the Sept. 25 Kurdish independence referendum illegal, especially as it was held not just in the autonomous KRG region but in Kirkuk and other adjacent areas that Peshmerga forces occupied after driving out Islamic State militants in 2014.
The Peshmerga moved in after Iraqi government forces collapsed in the face of a rapid onslaught by Islamic State, preventing the jihadists from seizing the oilfields.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi ordered that the national flag be hoisted over Kirkuk and other disputed areas.
Baghdad described its army’s advance as largely unopposed, and urged the Peshmerga to cooperate in keeping the peace.
The Peshmerga said Baghdad would be made to pay “a heavy price” for triggering “war on the Kurdistan people”…”

All WiFi users open to malware attack through WPA2 glitch – study (RT, Oct 16, 2017)
https://www.rt.com/news/406886-wifi-hack-wpa2-vulnerability/
“WiFi users are at risk due to a vulnerability which allows hackers to create malicious networks, decrypt data and even inject malware onto devices. Everything you do online, including your banking and password details, can be spied on.
Researchers have discovered a glaring vulnerability in WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) – a core encryption protocol used by WiFi users to keep their web activity private.
“This can be abused to steal sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords, chat messages, emails, photos, and so on,” Researcher Mathy Vanhoef from KU Leuven University in Belgium explained in the KRACK Attacks report. “The attack works against all modern protected Wi-Fi networks.”
An attacker in range of a target’s device can exploit weaknesses in WPA2 using key reinstallation attacks (KRACKs), which allows them to view data that’s meant to be encrypted.
As the weakness lies in WPA2 itself, all devices using WiFi are at risk. Researchers found devices using Android, Linux, Apple, Windows, OpenBSD, MediaTek and Linksys were affected.
Banking details, logins and credit card details are all at risk of being stolen, while the content of emails, chat messages, documents and images are exposed. In some cases, “an attacker might be able to inject ransomware or other malware into websites,” Vanhoef explained.
Linux and Android 6.0 and above are at greater risk of having their data decrypted as they can be tricked into installing encryption keys. With other devices, it isn’t as easy to decrypt all packets sent, but a large number can still be exposed, researchers found.
How the vulnerability is used to infiltrate WiFi data
Hackers are able to search for a WiFi network and then clone it to trick users. This allows them to manipulate messages between the WiFi router and the device.
WPA2 uses a four-way ‘handshake’ encryption when a user wants to join a WiFi network. The WiFi router and device generate one-time use encryption keys when they connect. An encryption key is installed on the device and is then used to encrypt all traffic.
KRACK targets people by manipulating the handshake messages, tricking them into re-installing encryption keys that are already in use. Keys are meant to be unique and aren’t re-usable.
The device is then tricked into connecting with the malicious network, and the hacker is a “man in the middle” between the user and the real network.
They can then use data-capturing program, Wireshark, to capture the unencrypted data being sent from a device, successfully bypassing WPA2.
Researchers created a video example of how the vulnerability can be manipulated and what data can be viewed.
All WiFi users are advised to update their devices to the latest security update as soon as it’s available. While the vulnerability is a threat, hackers must be in the target’s WiFi range to carry out the attack.”
Czech Prez: ‘Spread of Radical Islam in EU Candidate State Bosnia Funded by Saudi Arabia’ (breitbart, Oct 16, 2017)
http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/10/16/czech-prez-spread-radical-islam-eu-bosnia-funded-saudi-arabia/
“President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman said there is a risk of Saudi Arabia-funded radical Islam spreading to European Union candidate state Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Speaking at a Visegrád Group conference on integrating Baltic nations into the EU, President Zeman said: “All four presidents have clearly agreed that, in particular, there is a risk of further spreading of radical Islam in Bosnia. I am glad that my colleagues have pointed out that this spread is largely funded by Saudi Arabian sources.”
Hungarian President János Áder, Slovak President Andrej Kiska, and Polish President Andrzej Duda agreed with Zeman that these funds do not serve to enrich Bosnia-Herzegovina or neighbouring countries, but rather to invest in mosques and minarets, which may trigger an outbreak of ‘religious intolerance’.
Saudi Arabia has been widely criticised for funding thousands of mosques across Europe and the United States which preach the Gulf nation’s state interpretation of hardline Islam, Wahhabism…”
