  1. Former Vice President Al Gore has been hit by new allegations of sexual assault. This time, it’s two more massage therapists bringing the charges.

The former VP is already in hot water, fighting abuse claims in Portland, where another masseuse said Gore groped her in ’06 and asked her to perform a “chakra release” (massage-speak for “hand job”.) He denies everything.

A SUPERSONIC jet that can travel from New York to London in just three hours has successfully flown for the first time.

An unmanned prototype of the 18 passenger S-512 Quiet Supersonic Jet has taken to the skies for its first ever flight.

Spike Aerospace, the firm behind the radical new “son of Concorde”, said the maiden test flight was a “huge success”.

Prototypes of supersonic jets with top speeds of 1,354 mph have only been carried out in wind tunnels to date.

But now the futuristic jet has been tested in a “real world situation”, according to Spike.

  6. Austrians Lean Toward Nationalist Government Led by a Millennial
    By Jonathan Tirone

Austrians profiting from the fastest economic growth in six years look likely to ditch their current coalition in favor of a new government backed by anti-immigration nationalists and headed by the world’s youngest leader.

Polls suggest that Austria’s 31-year-old Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz will lead his conservative People’s Party to victory in Sunday’s election. That could set the stage for a coalition with Heinz-Christian Strache’s populist Freedom Party, unwinding a decade of Social Democratic-led administrations that revived the economy but struggled with issues over immigration and welfare.

    • Austria election RESULTS: Eurosceptics poised to celebrate in nightmare for Brussels (express, Oct 15, 2017)
      http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/866746/Austria-election-2017-results-poll-Sebastian-Kurz-OVP-Austria-live-updates

“SEBASTIAN Kurz is expected to clinch victory in the Austria elections, according to the latest projections, which could see him form an alliance with the far right in a crushing blow for the European Union.

The People’s Party (OVP) got 30.2 per cent of the vote, according to Austrian news channel ORF.

Mr Kurz’s party is tough on migration, easy on taxes and widely Eurosceptic after rebranding itself over the last few months to propel its popularity in the wealthy Alpine nation.

It is expected to form a coalition with the right-wing populist Freedom party (FPO), who got 26.8 per cent of the vote, according to the exit poll.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party, the largest party in the last government, are in third place with 26.3 per cent.

The OVP will be the biggest party in the new parliament, according to the OE24 exit poll, with 57 seats – an increase of 10.

The FPO will take 51 seats, up 11.

The SPO, the largest party in the last parliament, will lose three seats, leaving them on 49.

Exit polls including postal votes also showed Mr Kurz on course for victory, as the OVP got 30.2 per cent of the vote.

While the Freedom Party got 26.8 per cent of the vote.

During the first exit poll by OE24, the People’s Party (OVP) got 31 per cent of the vote, while the Freedom Party got 29 per cent of the vote, according to the exit poll.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party were in third place with 25 per cent.

The SPO’s projected result of 26.3 per cent represents the party’s worst showing since the end of Adolf Hitler’s rule in Austria, according to Europe Elects.

Eurosceptic Mr Kurz, 31, is set to become Europe’s youngster leader after becoming foreign minister at the age of 27.

Although the OVP has been in government for 30 year and Mr Kurz is one of the cabinet’s longest serving ministers, he has run his campaign with a promise of change.

The stunning result will come as a crushing blow to the EU and essentially a strong vote against liberal politics, pedalled by France and Germany.”

  7. Austrian voters concerned about immigration, Islam

Wrapping up a bruising political campaign season, Austrian political parties were counting down to an election Sunday that could turn the country to the right amid voter concerns over immigration and Islam.

The vote is coming a year ahead of schedule after squabbles led to the breakup last spring of the coalition government of the Social Democrats and the People’s Party. A total of 16 parties are vying for 183 seats in the national parliament and will be chosen by Austria’s 6.4 million eligible voters. But less than a dozen parties have a chance of getting seats.

The People’s Party, which has shifted from centrist to right-wing positions, is leading in the pre-vote polls after an image make-over by its leader, 31-year-old Sebastian Kurz.

  9. Infighting threatens to derail Catalan separatists in Spain

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Catalonia’s separatist movement is at risk of breaking apart over deepening infighting about the right strategy to culminate the long-held desire for the prosperous region to secede from Spain and become an independent state.

Diehard separatists are pushing for a definitive declaration of independence in the next few days. Moderates still hope to open negotiations with Spanish authorities who insist the disputed referendum on which such a declaration would be based was illegal.

  10. North Korea calls Trump a ‘strangler of peace’

CNN)North Korea continued its harsh anti-US rhetoric Sunday, calling President Donald Trump a “war merchant and strangler of peace.”
The administration of US President Donald Trump is selling weapons to South Korea and Japan with the intent of enriching the makers of US arms while creating “a hair trigger situation” on the Korean Peninsula, said a commentary from state newspaper Rodong Sinmun posted by the Korean Central News Agency.
In September, a week after Pyongyang fired a test missile over Japan, Trump said he would give allies increased access to US weaponry.

  11. N. Korea readies missile launch ahead of US-S. Korea drill: report

    SEOUL (AFP) –

North Korea is believed to be preparing to launch a ballistic missile ahead of an upcoming joint naval drill by the US and South Korea, a news report said Saturday, citing a government source.

The US navy said Friday that a US aircraft carrier will lead the drill in the coming week, a fresh show of force against North Korea as tensions soar over the hermit state’s weapons programme.

The move will likely rile Pyongyang which has previously responded angrily to joint exercises.

The Donga Ilbo daily, quoting a government source, said satellite pictures show ballistic missiles mounted on launchers being transported out of hangars near Pyongyang and in the North Phyongan Province.

US and South Korean military officials suspect the North might be preparing to launch missiles capable of reaching US territory, the newspaper said.

  12. Maduro faces financial nightmare in Venezuela — just in time for Halloween

With its coffers empty and its financial moves restricted by U.S. sanctions, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government is facing a nightmarish scenario with the approach of Halloween, when a series of debt payments totaling more than $3.5 billion are due.

Analysts said the government will do everything possible to make the payments, even if it means further cuts in already reduced food imports, which would deepen shortages in a country where a majority of people cannot get three meals a day.

But a default cannot be ruled out because of the precarious state of the country’s finances, the low level of reserves and the reluctance of strategic allies like Russia and China to continue lending money to Venezuela.

  14. EU To Approve Additional Sanctions On North Korea, Venezuela

The EU is expected to place more pressure on communist nations by imposing new sanctions on Venezuela and banning business ties with North Korea.

The EU is moving to place more pressure on North Korea and Venezuela, following suit with the Trump Administration.

EU foreign ministers are expected to meet next week to approve a new round of sanctions to ban business ties with North Korea.

Under the proposed measures, North Koreans living in Europe will not be able to renew their work visas once they expire.

In addition, three top North Korean officials and six businesses will be added to the EU’s black list, which will take the total of those sanctioned by the EU to 41 individuals and 10 companies.

  16. Congress upset: Facebook and Twitter both deleted data from ‘Russian troll’ accounts
    By J.E. Dyer October 15, 2017

Congress is right to be upset about this. After months of claims about Russia-sponsored Internet trolls “interfering” in the 2016 election, the public still has yet to see specific evidence of what these “trolls” actually did.

Claims have been published describing the outlines of a Russian online campaign on the social media platforms. But there is virtually nothing to illustrate the campaign, or clarify for Americans how we, as social media users, may have experienced it.

Facebook has said that the Russians set up accounts on Facebook and then bought ad promotions for political content. Facebook self-reported an in-house study of that activity earlier this year, and then provided an update to it after a Russian media site (owned at the time by a Russian oligarch with connections to Hillary Clinton) exposed some of the Russian operation.

But except for illustrative information provided by the Russian media site, about one single Facebook account used by Russian operatives (see last link, above), the American public has not been presented with examples of what it was we were trolled with.

    • As she states in the article so far there is no there yet, and there has probably never been any there, there. Yes Russia runs propaganda campaigns in the US and Western Europe. Yes the useful idiots buy into the various propaganda efforts (including in my opinion hte many conspiracy theories) but there is no evidence (outside of the conspiracy theories) that they have achieved the level of control to lead us around like we have a hook in our mouths.

  17. Trump to Iran: Days of appeasement and capitulation are over
By Jeff Dunetz October 13, 2017

In a speech to the nation of Friday, President Trump announced he would not certify the Iran nuclear deal. But instead of asking Congress to reimpose sanctions on the rogue nation, he asked Congress to revise Corker-Cardin (officially the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act -INARA) to set trigger points that would reinstate sanctions on Tehran if it doesn’t meet certain requirements. But what he really announced was that the days of a President of the United States and the national security team appeasing Iran and capitulating to their every demand are over. This is a new President who puts America first, unlike the old one who put his “legacy” first.

What follows are notes from a telephone briefing about the Iran plan given by Secretary of State Tillerson Thursday evening. Below that is the text of President Trump’s speech Friday, announcing his plan to the American people.

Unlike the reports circulating around the MSM and liberals on Twitter, the plan announced by President Trump is supported by his entire National Security Team. As General McMaster said during the Thursday night Iran strategy “on-the-record” briefing at the White House, the option selected by the President was the consensus recommendation of his administration, which of course includes both him and Secretary Mattis.

    • First test will be in halting the Shitte militias from liberated ISIS strongholds. That’s the “land bridge” from Iran to the Med.

      • With the exception of preventing them from getting nukes (probably hopeless since it is a high order probablity that they already have them) this will be our most important task in that region. We can delay them for a while but it will depend in cooperation from Saudi, Jordan and to an extent Turkey to see how long we can delay them. To an extent what happens here depends on what happens in North Korea and how fast Europe can regain its freedom and kick the invaders out.

It is a testimony to the peculiarities of international attention to world events that while every tweet by US President Donald Trump triggers an avalanche of reports, analyses, and outright abuse, little attention is paid as the People’s Republic of China prepares to hold its five-yearly National Congress of the Communist Party in Beijing.

And, yet, China is now established as the world’s largest economy in gross domestic product (GDP) terms and the second-biggest exporter after Germany. It also has the world’s fastest-growing portfolio of foreign investments with interests in 118 nations across the globe.

At the same time, at least 10 million Chinese are working abroad, almost always on projects sponsored by Beijing, helping transform large chunks of Africa, South America, and Asia.

According to estimates, there are already more than three million Chinese in Siberia, spearheading a 19th-century-style campaign to exploit the region’s vast natural resources. First encouraged by Moscow, the Chinese presence has become a source of concern for the Kremlin which fears losing control of Siberia due to demographic imbalance. This is why Russia now offers free land and seed capital to any Russian citizen who wishes to settle in Siberia. (Few have taken the offer, so far!)

    • Interesting. Given the current international political situation and the instability in the Chinese economy it is questionable if they can continue colonizing Asis, Africa and South America much longer, especially with their running into both Iranian and Turkish opposition to the spreading secular influence.

While I can see how some (especially in China) may consider their being ask to reign in North Korea the US begging but they are about to discover that we were politely asking for a favor which China was unwilling to do, an act they are going to regret.

        • Very interesting, especially the part about Xi wanting more control of the military because of fear of a coup if/when the economy tanks. The questions this brings to mind is

          1)How power nungry is Xi?

Does he want to be Emperor the same way Putin wants to be Czar?

          2) How Machiavellian is Xi?

Is he hungry enough and gutsy enough to foment an international crisis to allow him to seize more power?

How smart is Xi, is he smart enough to ensure that any Machiavellian scheme works the way he intends?

Also how does the large number of people he has sent to Siberia to exploit the minieral resources tie into any plans he is now carrying out?

          • He’s got it in the bag.
He’s the most powerful leader since Deng Xiaoping.
He’s so smart it’s scary. He’s looking way into the future and back to ancient Chinese sources of inspiration.

He watched the crack-up of the USSR and learned. In 2012 he led a massive anti-corruption campaign within the Party. (Compare the looting of assets under Gorbachev and especially Yeltsin.)

Very visible – he did the Lock her up! -thing in spades. Greatly appreciated by a broad spectrum of the people. Cleared away dead wood, as well as opposing factions. Built his team.

Then he brought discipline to the PLA. They’d been kinda drifting, sloppy and corrupt to the marrow. They’ve smartened up; now there’s no question who’s boss. Modernization overdue, but ongoing. Bringing in Western-educated new blood – as long as it isn’t tainted with our attitudes.

No pretense at letting “100 Flowers Bloom”. No way. Just short of defoliant, looks like. Tapping the deep xenophobia of the Chinese, propaganda heavily antiWestern- devil. Reining in those internet strays.

He’s likely to get away with it, too. This is still China.

Right now I think the last thing he wants is war. He’s focussed on building One-Belt/ One-Road and the Maritime Silk Road infrastructure. Instability makes it all more costly. The regions are inherently unstable anyway.

Further down the line, well he’s not our friend.
His friends are not our friends.

            • And he is moving into areas that Russia considers theirs, this is going to make it possible to triangulate Russia and China, if our politicians are smart enough.

If he doesn’t want war why hasn’t he reigned in Kim? Is his inaction aimed at internal enemies? Russia? Or his possible allies in Africa and South America? Kim doesn’t have money enough to build all of those missiles and nukes, Iran can give him some but most of their money is tied up in their own missile and nuke programs along with the war they are fighting. (Which is why Obama removed all of the sanctions and game them hundreds of billions of dollars) Where is the advantage to China to keep spending money on missiles and nukes that are pushing us to attack North Korea?

Xi has some reason besides trying to make us look like the aggressor but what?

            • I don’t see any economic advantage to China and he is smart enough to know that if he pushes hard enough a war will come which will cause massive economic damage to all nations.

  21. “Our Lives Have Turned into Hell”
Muslim Persecution of Christians, May 2017

One month after Islamic militants bombed two Egyptian churches during Palm Sunday and killed nearly 50 people in April 2017, several SUVs, on May 26, stopped two buses transporting dozens of Christians to the ancient Coptic Monastery of St. Samuel the Confessor in the desert south of Cairo. According to initial reports, approximately ten Islamic militants, heavily armed and dressed in military fatigues, “demanded that the passengers recite the Muslim profession of faith” — which is tantamount to converting to Islam. When they refused, the jihadis opened fire on them, killing 29 Christians, at least ten of whom were young children. Two girls were aged 2 and 4. Also killed was Mohsen Morkous, an American citizen described as “a simple man” whom “everyone loved,” his two sons, and his two grandsons.

According to eyewitness accounts, the terrorists ordered the passengers to exit the bus in groups:

  24. SYRIA – RAQQA – 275 ISIS members surrender to SDF

275 ISIS members and their families surrendered to Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Raqqa.

The ISIS members were taken under custody while their families were taken to a secure location outside of Raqqa.

A special court will investigate the crimes committed by the ISIS members and they are expected to stand trial after the investigation.

The agreement didn’t involve any foreign members of ISIS. A Raqqa Civil Council official said that the only way for foreign members is surrendering to the SDF.

The surrendering of ISIS members is a hard blow for the remaining ISIS gangs in Raqqa. The SDF commanders estimate a few hundred ISIS gangs remains in the city.

  25. ‘There is no such thing as a European nation!’ Orban warns against Brussels-led superstate (express, Oct 15, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/866738/Viktor-Orban-European-nation-Juncker-Macron

“VIKTOR ORBAN has mocked the idea of a ‘European nation’ in an attack on the EU superstate project, led by Jean-Claude Juncker and his allies in Brussels.

The fiery Hungarian Prime Minister lashed out at those leading the EU for trying to impose a myth of a “European nation”.

Viktor Orban announced that the European Union had failed and was “going backwards” under the leadership of Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Tusk.

Speaking alongside his Visegrad allies, the controversial leader rebuked plans from Mr Juncker, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, which pushed for closer integration.

Mr Orban told the press conference: “The Hungarian point of view – identical to the view of the Visegrad countries – is that, if we want to move forward, we should not step back!

“However, we can see that we are reversing the achievements that we reached in the past. The most visible example is the Schengen Zone.

“I have to say firmly, that all the institutions of the EU have utterly failed.

“Neither the European Commission, nor the European Council, nor the European Parliament protected the Schengen Treaty.”

Mr Orban then ripped into the low levels of trust among Europeans in the political projects of Brussels.

He said: “I believe there is no such thing as a European nation. There are Slovaks, Czechs, Poles, Hungarians, Germans, and many other nations.

“If we want to improve trust towards the EU, we must straighten the member-states.

“The strength of the EU is only possible through strong national institutions.”

The Hungarian leader also revealed plans for a massive international conference in Budapest early next year which will discuss “the future of Europe” as he seeks to build on his anti-Brussels momentum.

Mr Orban made his remarks during a trip to Slovakia, where the Visegrad Group complained about the double standards of food in the EU – where western states are sold higher quality products than countries in the east.”

“SAS snipers took out 15 Isis fighters in a daring operation to stop a Christian family being decapitated.

The crack snipers struck as crazed executioners held knives to the throats of a father and son near Mosul.

Both men, from a family of eight, had refused to convert to Islam and were about to be executed when the Isis killers were blasted in their heads.

The operation was carried out following the fall of Mosul last July and but has only just been made public, the Star on Sunday reported.

British troops were informed a black-clad death squad of Islamic extremists were targeting Christian civilians near the war-torn city and set out to investigate.

Using L115 rifles and loaded with .338 Lapua Magnum bullets, the snipers shot dead two fighters from 1,000m away.

Then then turned their weapons on another pair of fighters.

As more jihadis tried to flee in a truck, they were taken out in a firefight that lasted around half an hour.

The family were led to safety before another 80 fighters drove up to collect the bodies of the fallen terrorists…”

  28. US-allied forces begin final assault on IS in Syria’s Raqqa (abcnews, Oct 15, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/us-backed-fighters-begin-final-attack-syrias-raqqa-50491646

“U.S.-backed Syrian fighters launched an operation to retake the last Islamic State-held pocket of the northern city of Raqqa on Sunday after some 275 militants and their family members surrendered.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said the operation will continue “until all the city is cleansed from terrorists who refused to surrender.”

The SDF has been on the offensive in Raqqa since early June and now controls about 90 percent of the city that was once the extremist group’s self-styled capital. Most of the fighters who remain in the pocket are foreigners, according to the SDF and opposition activists.

The operation was named after Adnan Abu Amjad, an Arab commander with the SDF who was killed in August while fighting against IS in central Raqqa.

The loss of Raqqa would hand another major blow to IS, which has lost most of the territory it once held in Syria and Iraq. Iraqi forces captured the northern Iraqi city of Mosul — the largest ever held by the extremist group — in July, and Syrian government forces retook the eastern Syrian city of Mayadeen, near the border with Iraq, on Saturday…”

“The demand by the Iraqi authorities to cancel the results of the Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum has been rejected by Erbil.

Leaders of Iraqi Kurdistan have rejected the demand of Baghdad to cancel the outcome of the independence referendum, Hemin Hawrami, the aide of the leader of the Kurdistan region Masoud Barzani said.

“There will not be any unilateral negotiation with Baghdad by either PUK or KDP. If there be any negotiation with Baghdad it will be a joint delegation representing all Kurdistan parties. KDP/PUK reject any demands to nullify the referendum results. Refuse preconditions,” he said on Twitter.

He said that Iraqi Kurdistan rejects what the region’s authorities consider to be “military threats” from Baghdad against Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, adding that Kurdish-controlled territory would be defended in case of a potential attack.

However, according to him, Iraqi Kurdistan renewed its offer to resolve the crisis that erupted as a result of the independence vote “peacefully.”…”
