  1. Sicily, only 300 guardians for unaccompanied foreign minors (ansamed, Oct 13, 2017)
    http://www.ansamed.info/ansamed/en/news/sections/generalnews/2017/10/13/sicily-only-300-guardians-for-unaccompanied-foreign-minors_53f56792-04c0-45ab-aa44-d214f1bea924.html

“In Sicily there are approximately 300 people acting as guardians for unaccompanied foreign minors on a voluntary basis. Too few for an island that bears the brunt of arrivals and has 7,000 youngsters with an average age of 15-17 years and mainly from Gambia, Guinea, Nigeria, Eritrea and Ivory Coast.

And so new training courses are set to begin at the end of October for aspiring guardians. Law 47/2017 contemplates a guardian for every unaccompanied foreign minor, or at most for 2-3 minors in the event of siblings.

Aspiring guardians must be at least 25, without pending criminal charges, and undergo formal training before being inscribed in a special list at the juvenile court. In Sicily training will begin at the end of October for 120 new guardians, taking the total to 420. Further training will be rolled out for new applicants in due course.

Until now the responsibility of guardianship has usually fallen to local mayors or delegated councillors, but the situation has become unsustainable. In Palermo for example, the former city councillor for social activities Agnese Ciulla had over 500 unaccompanied minors in her charge.

“I was tired of looking on,” Patrizia Opipari told ANSA. “On 17 July I met the young boy from Gambia who has been entrusted to me. It has been an extraordinary experience, embarked upon without any knowledge of a foreign language, but in the end it made me want to learn and so we have launched an English workshop with other guardians, running parallel to the youngsters’ Italian lessons.” “

  2. Six Egyptian army personnel killed in North Sinai militant attack: Spox (ahram, Oct 13, 2017)
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/278724/Egypt/Politics-/Six-Egyptian-army-personnel-killed-in-North-Sinai-.aspx

“Six army personnel were killed during a militant attack on a security checkpoint in the North Sinai city of Arish, the army’s spokesman said in a statement on Friday.

Army forces are currently combing the area to arrest the militants, who attacked the army personnel with grenades and automatic fire and then fled.

A number of militants were killed and injured when the army personnel returned fire, the statement added.

Egyptian security forces are battling a North Sinai-based Islamist insurgency that intensified following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Hundreds of security personnel have been killed by militants in recent years, while the army says it has killed hundreds of militants in security campaigns in the governorate.”

  3. Turks seeking US visas left reeling by diplomatic row (france24, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://www.france24.com/en/20171014-turks-seeking-us-visas-left-reeling-diplomatic-row

“Turkish students, business executives and travel operators have been left reeling by the country’s dispute with the United States that has led both to suspend visas.

Last year, 313,654 Turks went to the US while 459,493 Americans came to Turkey, according to figures provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute.

But the decision to charge a US consulate staffer with links to the American-based preacher Fethullah Gulen, accused of launching last year’s failed coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has thrown ties into turmoil.

In response, the US embassy in Ankara said it would suspend non-immigrant visas including those for tourism and work. Turkey then halted all visa services at its US missions for American citizens.

“Students and their families are panicking,” said Zeynep Sen, a foreign education programme coordinator based in Istanbul, who helps students go abroad…”

  4. Turkish-US relations hit new low (memo, Oct 14, 2017)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20171014-turkish-us-relations-hit-new-low/

“The outgoing US ambassador to Ankara, John Bass, has faced criticism during his three years in the Turkish capital for interfering in domestic issues, including political and judicial issues.

Recent remarks by Bass, who is expected to end his Turkish posting this weekend, on the arrest of Metin Topuz, an employee at the US Consulate in Istanbul, are an apparent attempt to interfere in the Turkish judiciary.

Topuz was arrested under an ongoing investigation against a 2013 plot by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization – the group behind last year’s defeated coup attempt in Turkey – known locally as the Dec. 17-25 incidents.

As Topuz is accused of attempting to topple the constitutional order, spying, and attempting to destroy the government of the Republic of Turkey, Bass came under fire for commenting that the accusations were motivated by “revenge”.”

  5. Merkel’s potential partners divided over Turkey (memo, Oct 14, 2017)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20171014-merkels-potential-partners-divided-over-turkey/

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s potential coalition partners, the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens, have brought conflicting proposals on future ties between the EU and Turkey, days ahead of exploratory talks between the parties.

The FDP has called for ending Turkey’s EU membership talks, but proposed an alternative model of a “positive agenda” for close cooperation between the EU and Turkey.

“Given the current direction of Turkish domestic politics, we cannot see membership of Turkey in the EU for the time being,” Michael Link, Germany’s former deputy foreign minister told Anadolu Agency.

The senior FDP lawmaker argued that Turkey’s EU process had already been de facto on hold for a long period.

Of course what happens in the long run is open. But right now, we think it is better to end the negotiation process,

    he said.

Link said his party still wanted to see close cooperation between the EU and Turkey, under a new mechanism called a “positive agenda”, taking into account of interests of both sides.

“The EU and Turkey can work together as closely as possible in various areas, such as migration, visa issues, energy, security and the Customs Union,” he said.

But the Greens, Merkel’s likely coalition partner along with the FDP, has clearly opposed ending Turkey’s EU membership process.

“Any decision to completely terminate Turkey’s EU membership talks would be a wrong message for the pro-European and democratic actors in Turkey,” Green lawmaker and foreign affairs spokesman Omid Nouripour told Anadolu Agency.

“For a democratic and liberal-minded Turkey, the EU’s doors must remain open to Turkey,” he stressed.

However, Nouripour underlined that their support for opening new chapters in Turkey’s EU talks would depend on steps by Ankara on issues of democracy and the rule of law.

He also recalled their expectation for the release of German citizens arrested in Turkey, as part of recent anti-terrorism investigations.”

    • Islamic fundamentalists murdered my baby in cold blood, says distraught hostage (express, Oct 14, 2017)
      http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/866380/Taliban-Afghanistan-hostage-murdered-baby-Canada-US

“A Canadian hostage held by the Taliban has revealed they murdered his baby daughter and raped his wife.

Joshua Boyle, 34, and his US wife Caitlan Coleman and their children spent close to five years in captivity after they were kidnapped when they were reportedly backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012.

Ms Coleman’s father branded the decision to take the risk of going to the war-torn country as “unconscionable.”

Both of their parents called into question as to why they jetted out there in the first place as Ms Coleman was pregnant at the time.

The couple, who were rescued on Wednesday, were snatched by the Taliban-linked extremist network Haqqani network in Afghanistan and it emerged for the first time Ms Coleman, of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, had four children in captivity.

Mr Boyle revealed the birth of the fourth child when he gave a briefing at Toronto airport.

He said: “The stupidity and evil of the Haqqani network’s kidnapping of a pilgrim and his heavily pregnant wife engaged in helping ordinary villagers in Taliban-controlled regions of Afghanistan was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorising the murder of my infant daughter.

Mr Boyle said his wife was raped by a guard who was helped by his superiors and called on the Afghan government to bring them to justice.

He said he was in Afghanistan to help villagers “who live deep inside Taliban-controlled Afghanistan where no NGO, no aid worker and no government has ever successfully been able to bring the necessary help.”

They refused to board a US military plane from Pakistan and instead opted to fly from Pakistan to Britain and onto Canada.

One US official said Mr Boyle was nervous about being in ‘custody’ given his first marriage to the sister of Omar Kadhr, who is a former Guantanamo Bay detainee who is believed to have ties to al-Qaeda.

Questions have been asked why he and Ms Coleman were doing in Afghanistan during 2012.

Mr Boyle, who was travelling with US State Department officials, gave a written statement saying his family has “unparalleled resilience and determination.”

The statement also put him at odds with US foreign policy, as he added: “God has given me and my family unparalleled resilience and determination, and to allow that to stagnate, to pursue personal pleasure or comfort while there is still deliberate and organised injustice in the world would be a betrayal of all I believe, and tantamount to sacrilege.”

In a nod to one of the State Department officials said: “Their interests are not my interests.”

“It will be of incredible importance to my family that we are able to build a secure sanctuary for our three surviving children to call a home.

“To try to regain some portion of the childhood that they have lost.”

The Canadian government said in a statement they will “continue to support him and his family now that they have returned.”

Dan Boyle, the captive’s younger brother, said outside the family home in Smith Falls, Ontario, he had spoken to his brother a few times in the past few days.

“He’s doing very well. He sounds a lot like how he sounded five years ago,” he said.

“He sounds like he had his head on his shoulders and his wits about him.”

But Ms Coleman’s father said: “What I can say is taking your pregnant wife to a very dangerous place is to me and the kind of person I am, is unconscionable.

“I can’t imagine doing that myself. But, I think that’s all I want to say about that.”

The family were rescued by the Pakistani army after a US tip-off during an operation near the Afghan border.

Pakistan said it will act against a ‘common enemy’ when Washington shares information.

Mr Boyle told his parents his family were discovered by Pakistani forces while being transported in the back of their captors’ car.

One of the captors yelled ‘Kill the hostages!’ during the ensuing shootout but Mr Boyle escaped with a shrapnel wound, according to his family.”

      • He said: “The stupidity and evil of the Haqqani network’s kidnapping of a pilgrim and his heavily pregnant wife engaged in helping ordinary villagers in Taliban-controlled regions of Afghanistan was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorising the murder of my infant daughter.

Muslims are born stupid, what is wannabee jihadist Boyles excuse? Terminal leftardism? May he and his family die a miserable death.

    • BBC – Canadian hostage Joshua Boyle says Taliban killed daughter

A Canadian held hostage by the Taliban has spoken of the group’s “stupidity and evil”, revealing they murdered his daughter and raped his wife.

Joshua Boyle spoke to reporters after landing in Canada with his wife Caitlan Coleman and children following almost five years in captivity.

They were captured while reportedly backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012.
Ms Coleman’s father has said the decision to visit the dangerous country was “unconscionable”.

Both sets of parents have previously questioned why the couple were in Afghanistan in the first place.

“What I can say is taking your pregnant wife to a very dangerous place is to me and the kind of person I am, is unconscionable,” Jim Coleman told ABC News following their rescue on Wednesday.

“I can’t imagine doing that myself. But, I think that’s all I want to say about that.”

However, Mr Boyle told reporters at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport the couple had been trying to deliver aid to villagers in a part of the Taliban-controlled region “where no NGO, no aid worker, and no government” had been able to reach when they were kidnapped.

Ms Coleman was heavily pregnant at the time with their first child. This week, they returned with three children, all born in captivity, the youngest of whom is understood to be in poor health.

In his statement, Mr Boyle appeared to suggest they had had a fourth child, a baby girl who had been killed by their captors, the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network, as he also revealed they had raped his wife.

It was, he said, “retaliation for my repeated refusal” to accept an offer made to him by the network.

“The stupidity and the evil of the Haqqani network in the kidnapping of a pilgrim… was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorising the murder of my infant daughter,” he said.

“And the stupidity and evil of the subsequent rape of my wife, not as a lone action, but by one guard, but assisted by the captain of the guard and supervised by the commandant.”

The family were finally rescued by the Pakistani army after a US tip-off during an operation near the Afghan border.

Initial reports suggested Mr Boyle had refused to board a US military flight out of Pakistan.

Mr Boyle was once married to a woman who espoused radical Islamist views and is the sister of a former Guantanamo Bay inmate, Omar Khadr. CNN suggested he might fear prosecution by the US authorities.

But Mr Boyle rubbished the reports after arriving in Canada.
He said the family were looking to put their terrible ordeal behind them and the couple were now hoping “to build a secure sanctuary for our three surviving children to call a home”.

“A senior member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party has been rebuked by his own political allies for suggesting that Germany might introduce public holidays to celebrate the Islamic religion.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told a party rally in northern Germany this week that he was willing to discuss Islamic holidays in areas with large Muslim populations.

There are an estimated 4.7 million Muslims in Germany, mostly immigrants from Turkey.

Alexander Dobrindt, who also belongs to Merkel’s conservative Union bloc, told the daily Bild on Saturday that he was against Islamic holidays: “Our Christian heritage isn’t up for negotiation.”

Merkel’s center-right Christian Democrats and their Bavaria-only sister party have been losing voters to the nationalist Alternative for Germany, which campaigns against Islam and large-scale Muslim immigration.”

“British police forces arrested at least nine people a day for “offensive” online comments last year.

Figures obtained by The Times through the Freedom of Information Act reveal that 3,395 people across 29 forces were arrested last under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, which makes it illegal to intentionally “cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another”, in 2016.

The true figure is likely to be significantly higher, as thirteen police forces refused to provide the requested information and two did not provide usable data.

Around half of the investigations were abandoned before being brought to prosecution, which critics say is an indication that the authorities are being excessively strict in their interpretation of the law’s restrictions on freedom of speech.

Nevertheless, many forces have massively stepped up their focus on so-called trolls, with the number of arrests by West Midlands Police having increased by an astonishing 877 per cent since 2014.

    • Austrian voters concerned about immigration, Islam (abnews, Oct 14, 2017)
      http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/austrian-voters-concerned-immigration-islam-50477854

“Wrapping up a bruising political campaign season, Austrian political parties were counting down to an election Sunday that could turn the country to the right amid voter concerns over immigration and Islam.

The vote is coming a year ahead of schedule after squabbles led to the breakup last spring of the coalition government of the Social Democrats and the People’s Party. A total of 16 parties are vying for 183 seats in the national parliament and will be chosen by Austria’s 6.4 million eligible voters. But less than a dozen parties have a chance of getting seats.

The People’s Party, which has shifted from centrist to right-wing positions, is leading in the pre-vote polls after an image make-over by its leader, 31-year-old Sebastian Kurz.

Austria’s traditionally right-wing, anti-migrant Freedom Party is expected to come in second and the center-left Social Democrats are thought to be trailing in third place.

Others that may clear the 4 percent hurdle needed to get into parliament seats are the Greens, the liberal NEOS, and Liste Pilz, led by former Greens politician Peter Pilz.

Favoring the People’s and Freedom parties is distrust of migrants and Muslims among many Austrian voters.

The 2015 influx of hundreds of thousands of people fleeing the war in Syria and poverty elsewhere into the EU’s prosperous heartland left Austria with nearly 100,000 new and mostly Muslim migrants. That has fueled fears Austria’s traditional Western and Christian culture is in danger. As a result, voters are receptive to the anti-migrant platforms of both the People’s Party and the Freedom Party.

Although the Social Democrats have come either first or second in elections since World War II, voters are now more receptive to calls for tougher migration rules than the party’s focus on social justice.

“I’m of course pro-migration and that many people can come to us, but at some point we have to stop,” student Janine Leitner, 21 said Saturday in Vienna.

The Social Democrats are also fighting charges of dirty campaigning after Israeli political adviser Tal Silberstein posted on Facebook suggesting that People’s Party head Kurz was anti-Semitic. Silberstein has been fired and insists Social Democratic Chancellor Christian Kern knew nothing about the postings.

Kern says his party will go into the opposition if it does not win Sunday. With a handful of other parties struggling to just get into parliament, the most likely post-vote scenario is a People’s Party-Freedom Party coalition that would shift the government significantly to the right.

But other coalitions are possible, depending on the results of Sunday’s vote.

While Europe’s centrist governments could view a rightward shift with some concern, architect Bernhard Egelmuller didn’t think there would be any major negative international fallout if the Freedom Party does join the next Austrian government.

“Right-wing parties in governments … exist in other European states as well,” said the 60-year-old. “It has proven to be less dramatic than anticipated.””

    • Austrian chancellor in last-ditch election warning (thelocal, Oct 14, 2017)
      https://www.thelocal.at/20171014/austrian-chancellor-in-last-ditch-election-warning

“Austria’s embattled left-wing chancellor gave a last-ditch warning on Saturday to voters not to allow the country to turn right with a coalition of the conservatives and the far-right.

“Austria is at the most important crossroads in decades,” Christian Kern told a rally of his Social Democrats (SPOe) in Vienna a day ahead of elections in the wealthy but disgruntled Alpine nation.

“Do we want an Austria where the rich get richer and where the social security system, healh and education are under attack? Or an Austria where everybody has an opportunity?” he said.

After a campaign beset by scandals, missteps and resignations, the odds appear to be against Kern, 51, the former Austrian Railways boss parachuted in by the SPOe as chancellor in May 2016.

Polls put “wunderwuzzi” (“whizz-kid”) Sebastian Kurz, 31, and his centre-right People’s Party (OeVP) in first place with over 30 percent and on course to become Europe’s youngest leader.

His most likely coalition partner is seen as the anti-immigration Freedom Party (FPOe), which may humiliatingly relegate the once-mighty SPOe into third place.

FPOe chief Heinz-Christian Strache, who flirted with neo-Nazism in his youth, would be deputy chancellor, 17 years after Joerg Haider alarmed Europe and Israel by taking the party into government.

“In parts of society we are becoming a minority in our own country,” Strache, 48, told a Vienna rally late Friday. “Let’s get rid of this…government before the Austrian people disappear.”

Kurz could also go into yet another “grand coalition” with the SPOe, but the outgoing one was acrimonious and unpopular with Kern and Kurz visibly disliking each other.

“I’ll shoot myself,” one FPOe supporter told AFP.

      Riding high

Until earlier this year, the FPOe was on a roll, its candidate almost becoming president in December.

Like Alternative for Germany, Marine Le Pen’s National Front in France and Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, the FPOe stoked concerns about Europe’s migrant crisis to boost support.

Sharply critical of the European Union in its current form, Strache attacked the crusty SPOe and OeVP, moved to the left on social issues and went neo-liberal on the economy.

“Only if we cut taxes can firms make a profit, invest, and secure and create jobs,” Strache said Friday. “We need to hike wages so that people can live.”

But when rosy-cheeked Kurz, who is foreign minister, became OeVP party chief in May, revamping the party as his own personal “movement”, he stole supporters from Strache in droves.

      Back on top

Kurz pledges to close Islamic kindergartens and cut immigrants’ benefits. He claims credit for closing the Balkan migrant trail in 2016 that brought hundreds of thousands of migrants to Europe.

In slick campaign adverts of him scaling the Alps, he has promised – echoing the FPOe – to slash taxes and red tape and “return this beautiful country to the peak”.

Austrian firms have indeed long complained about onerous rules and Austria no longer has the EU’s lowest unemployment. Growth in 2017 though will be the fastest in years.

“The OeVP and the FPOe are promising billions of euros in tax gifts for the big companies that finance their campaigns,” Kern said on Saturday.

“But it won’t be the OeVP and the FPOe who pay the bill, it will be ordinary Austrians. We are here to stop this.”

“I don’t want friends of Marine Le Pen and Geert Wilders in power,” SPOe supporter Elisabeth Untermayer, 68, told AFP, remembering protesting in 2000 when the FPOe last entered government.

“I will demonstrate again if I have to. But I don’t think the protests will be so big. Society has moved to the right. The refugees issue has changed things a lot.””

“A Somali police officer says a powerful explosion from a truck bomb has struck a busy road in the Somali capital and at least six people have been killed.

The blast is the largest heard in Mogadishu in recent memory.

Capt. Mohamed Hussein says the blast occurred Saturday as security forces were trailing the truck that had raised suspicions. A hotel apparently was targeted.

The blast at KM4 street in Hodan district occurred two days after the head of the U.S. Africa Command was in Mogadishu to meet with Somalia’s president.

The U.S. military has stepped up drone strikes and other efforts this year against the Somalia-based al-Shabab extremist group, which often targets high-profile areas of Mogadishu with deadly bombings.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.”

  15. Kosovo Children: Married Off or Used as Organ Donors? (sputniknews, Oct 14, 2017)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201710141058236062-kosovo-children-organs-abductions/

“It looks like the ghoulish practice of abducting children and smuggling them across the Albanian-Kosovo border for subsequent use as organ donors has never ceased.

Former Albanian President and Prime Minister Sali Berisha posted on his Facebook page a message from an unnamed police officer who claimed that children are being smuggled from Kosovo into Albania by criminals who use them as organ donors which they subsequently sell to the highest bidder.

The police officer wrote that border guards are paid 150 euros to let through children abducted from impoverished Kosovo villages.

“Nine children under 18 have been taken out so far. Please publish this information and do something about it,” the anonymous officer wrote.

Sputnik tried to act on the information, which was completely ignored by Albanian media. However, several anonymous sources in the Dragas municipality in Kosovo on the border with Albania and Macedonia, told Sputnik that four children between eight and 12 – three girls and a boy – had disappeared in the area during the past few months.

“I don’t know if this has anything to do with what Mr. Berisha wrote about, but since Dragas community is on the border with Albania and Macedonia, which nobody guards, everything is possible. The children disappeared in the morning, which is strange. For example, two girls went to a local store and never came back,” a source told Sputnik on condition of anonymity.

He added that Albanians used to buy young Kosovo girls for marriage. Moreover, people in the impoverished Dragas community often send their kids to work as farm hands in neighboring Albania and because this is illegal, they will hardly report the disappearances to police.

“There are people who agree with the children’s parents to take their kids to work or to get married in Albania. Those who are looking for a job are taken to Albania on trucks and then brought back. If the children in question were abducted I don’t think their parents will go to the police. They will rather try to find them themselves,” the source explained.

For his part, the former head of Yugoslav intelligence Miromir Stojanonic told Sputnik that Sali Berisha supported the Kosovo Liberation Army terrorists.

“Berisha knows full well what was going in the northern Albanian camps where abducted Serbs and pro-Belgrade Albanians were held at the time, including Yugoslav soldiers and policemen taken prisoner by the KLA,” Stojanovic told Sputnik Serbia.

He added that, according to Yugoslav intelligence, people in those camps disappeared without a trace.

“We have irrefutable evidence that those people were killed and their organs [were sold in the West]. Berisha is now at loggerheads with the Albanian Premier Edi Rama and the Kosovo authorities, that’s why he decided to shed light on the continued trade in organs in the region,” Stojanovic added.

None of the Albanian journalists Sputnik talked with could say whether Berisha’s information was correct or if he had published it for political reasons.

Albania and Kosovo were mentioned in Swiss Senator Dick Marty’s December 14, 2010 report about inhuman treatment of people and killing of prisoners with the purpose of removal and illicit trafficking in human organs in Kosovo.

However, the events described in the report happened in the late 1990s-early-2000s.

In her book “The Hunt: Me and the War Criminals,” published in 2008, former United Nations war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte wrote about cases of murder and organ trafficking by Kosovo politicians, including Kosovo’s current President Hashim Thaci.

In April 2015, the international community called on Kosovo authorities to investigate alleged organ trafficking by members of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the 1998-1999 Kosovo War, that were first mentioned in the 2010 report to the Council of Europe.

According to the document, perpetrators killed Serb captives to remove and sell their organs during the war.”

  16. Damascus demands ‘immediate & unconditional’ pullout of Turkish troops from northwest Syria (RT, Oct 14, 2017)
    https://www.rt.com/news/406690-damascus-demands-turkish-troops-out/

“Syria demands an immediate pullout of Turkish troops, whose deployment to Idlib province amounts to “flagrant aggression,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry said as quoted by SANA.

“The Syrian Arab Republic condemns in the strongest terms the incursion of Turkish military units in the Idlib Province, which constitutes to blatant aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and flagrant violation of international law,” an official source in the foreign ministry told Sana news agency.

“The Syrian Arab Republic demands an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Turkish troops from the Syrian territory,” the source stated.

According to the foreign ministry representative, the move by Ankara was an “aggression” which “the Turkish regime can’t justify in any way.”

The source also dismissed Turkey’s attempts to link the move to the implementation of the Astana agreements on the creation of de-escalation zones in Syria.

The incursion was, in fact, a “departure” from the deal, reached by Russia, Turkey, and Iran in the Kazakh capital, he said.

On Thursday, Turkey deployed a convoy of around 30 military vehicles into Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province…”

  19. USA – Muslims Say Islamophobia Is Taking a Mental Toll on Their Communities

BROOKLYN – One thing was clear at a town hall discussion in downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday: being Muslim in America in 2017 comes with a lot of emotional trauma.

A panel of Muslim journalists and activists convened at BRIC House for “Muslim in New York: A Community Comes Together.” The group talked about the realities of living as a Muslim and Islamophobia. It was deeply personal as Dr. Debbie Almontaser of the Muslim Community Network shared her experience on 9/11 — she recalled that her friend insisted on accompanying her home and during the car ride, a man yelled, “You did this to us!” — and journalist Mehdi Hasan brought up his fears as a parent of two daughters.

But it was a video of one young Muslim man telling the story of his father’s arrest that exemplified the toll on Muslims’ mental health post 9/11. The man described seeing his family separated, and being ostracized in his community.

The young man’s case isn’t unique. “This is psychological warfare on American Muslims,” Almontaser said on Thursday. “The fact that we have so many children changing their name from Mohammed to Mo [is] just truly devastating, and this is because of the fact that we live in a society where Muslims are seen as the ‘other,’ where people are supposed to fear Muslims.”

According to CAIR, a Muslim advocacy and civil rights group, the number of hate crimes against Muslims in the United States nearly doubled in the first half of 2017 compared to the same time in 2016. The American Psychological Association has also recognized the damage that Islamophobia does to mental health.

Other panelists spoke about different pressures that Muslims face. Attorney Naz Ahmad said that she has clients on the government’s no-fly list who are “traumatized” by the idea of flying.

“Everybody gets patted down and they get treated like they’re all carrying bombs, but they’ve gone through this process so many times and nothing ever comes out of it,” she said. Critics of the government’s program have said the guidelines for placing people on the list are too vague.

On Wednesday, the panel also acknowledged that the discrimination is even greater for black Muslims. “We are traumatized people with all kinds of hurt and pain,” Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid, the leader of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood Inc. in Harlem, said in a video. “Double whammy discrimination, that is our reality.”

The discussion resonated deeply with many of the audience members. Hoshneara Begum, an activist from Queens, recalled how she was punched in the face several times, and also had her hijab torn off. She said in another incident, someone in school tore her daughter’s hijab off. “I had no choice but to put her in an Islamic school,” Begum said, adding that it was difficult to afford the monthly tuition.

She said that she would like to see other discussions about the different ways people experience Islamophobia. She said that for her, there’s one lesson in all of this: “We need to start treating each other as human first.”

  20. Foreign, Syrian IS fighters to evacuate Raqa in deal: local official

Syrian and foreign Islamic State group fighters are to evacuate their one-time bastion Raqa as part of an agreement brokered by tribal leaders, a senior local official told AFP Saturday.

Omar Alloush, a senior official of the Raqa Civil Council, said a deal had been reached to allow fighters out of the city, which is on the verge of being captured by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.

“Foreign fighters are included in the deal,” he said.

According to Alloush, up to 500 fighters including both Syrian and foreign-born jihadists remain in Raqa.

“They have 400 hostages with them — women and children — in the national hospital,” he told AFP.

The US-led coalition backing the SDF’s drive for Raqa had announced the deal earlier on Saturday but said it would exclude foreign IS fighters.

The agreement comes after days of talks on a way for the US-backed SDF to secure the last parts of the city while avoiding further civilian casualties.

Alloush insisted the agreement included non-Syrian jihadists.

“The foreign fighters have two choices: either surrender or be taken out” of the city, Alloush told AFP, saying it was “possible” they would be taken to Deir Ezzor, an eastern Syrian province where IS still holds territory.

  21. SWEDEN – EXPRESSEN – Defecting ISIS commander: There will be more terror attacks

    ISIS capital Raqqa falls.

The terrorist sect is collapsing in Syria and Iraq.

But the threat against Europe is far from over.

“ISIS sleeper cells are ready. When they’re ordered to attack, for example, an airport or a supermarket, then they just do it,” says defecting ISIS Emir Abu Abboud al-Raqqawi.

In an exclusive interview with Expressen’s Kassem Hamadé, al-Raqqawi talks about the recruitment of future terrorists, about torture under ISIS and about how their terrorism is being part-financed by organ trafficking and stolen antiquities.

Foreign jihadists are playing a key role in ISIS’s plans to continue to wage war even after the caliphate in Iraq and Syria has been defeated.

“From within the caliphate, they’re recruiting sleeper cells in Western countries. They’re recruiting friends and family,” says al-Raqqawi.

When suspected terrorist Rakhmat Akilov was questioned about the terrorist attack in Stockholm, he said he had received orders from Raqqa. Similar information emerged during investigations into the terrorist attacks in Paris, London, Barcelona and Beirut.

For the first time since ISIS announced the establishment of its caliphate in the late summer of 2014, a former Emir has now come forward to talk about his life inside the caliphate.

“Migrants inside the caliphate are in touch with their friends in the Western world. Their friends and family in Sweden, in Germany, in France, in the UK, in Turkey, in Azerbaijan or in other parts of the world. From within the caliphate, they’re recruiting sleeper cells in the Western world,” explains al-Raqqawi.

One of the people in charge of foreign recruitment is from France. Few people know his true identity, but in Raqqa he goes by the name of Abu Mosaab al-Farancy.

“He speaks several languages and runs the Sharia camps. When foreign jihadists come to the caliphate, they’re sent to Sharia camps for a month. Abu Mosaab is in charge of these camps and he’s the person who makes sure everyone takes Sharia courses,” says al-Raqqawi.

There has been speculation that Abu Mosaab al-Farancy was killed in an airstrike on Raqqa a couple of years ago. Abu Abboud al-Raqqawi met him just a few months ago.

“You communicate over the internet. The person being recruited receives publications – videos and documents that encourage jihad and that show Muslims being killed in Syria and Iraq, and videos demonstrating ISIS strength,” says al-Raqqawi.

    “SLEEPER CELLS ARE AWAITING ORDERS”

During the first year, ISIS was interested in recruiting members to join the caliphate. When Turkey closed its border, due to pressure from the rest of the world, and began to stop foreign jihadists from crossing into Syria, they encouraged sympathisers in the West to remain where they were and perform acts of terrorism.

“When they’re ordered to attack, for example, an airport or a supermarket, then they just do it. There will be more attacks. Even if they’re collapsing and are weaker now, sleeper cells are awaiting orders,” says al-Raqqawi.

Terrorist sect ISIS is one of the groups believed to have carried out chemical warfare attacks in Syria and Iraq. Al-Raqqawi had heard that ISIS was holding chemical weapons, but he has not seen any.

“During the Battle for Kobane, ISIS wanted to bomb Kobane using chemical warfare. The attack was stopped at the last minute. It was Abu Mohammad al-Adnani who stopped it,” says al-Raqqawi.

“In the West, they carry out attacks using explosive belts and normal firearms. As far as I know, they don’t have access to chemical weapons in the West,” says al-Raqqawi.

    APPEAL AIMED AT DOCTORS

According to al-Raqqawi, ISIS has financed some of its terrorism using proceeds from human organ trafficking and stolen art and antiquities from plundered museums and sacred sites.

During the late summer of 2014, supreme leader of ISIS Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi encouraged Muslims from around the world to move to the caliphate in Syria and Iraq. His appeal was particularly aimed at doctors.

“We’ve had doctors from Mauritania, the UK and France. Several of them were surgeons. They carried out plastic surgery on seriously injured ISIS members, but they also dealt with bodies being transported to Turkey,” says al-Raqqawi.

Another major source of income, according to al-Raqqawi, was the trade of antiquities that had been looted from museums and sacred sites.

Footage of ISIS terrorists demolishing thousand-year-old statues with sledgehammers and blowing up sacred sites have been shown around the world.

But according to al-Raqqawi, it was mainly put on for show. What they did not film was valuable antiquities being stolen from museums or dug up in Syria and Iraq, to be sold on the black market.

“They dug up antiquities, mosaics, antique objects and ancient writings. Everything was transported to Turkey and sold on the black market. It was one of ISIS’s most important sources of income,” says al-Raqqawi.

ISIS had people who were experts in the antique trade, as well as people with a wide network of contacts. Turkey was an important market as a transit country.

“The Moroccans dealt with the antiquities. All antiques dealing was handled by them. They were in Deir al-Zawr, Halabiye and Zalabiye or al-Jisr al-Harbi in Jarabulus, and even in Palmyra and areas of Iraq,” says al-Raqqawi.

You were an Emir of the Islamic State, but now you are saying that they are not true Muslims.

    “Yes, they’re not Muslims.”

Nevertheless, you were involved in establishing ISIS and you helped them?
“That’s correct. I joined ISIS and stayed with them for a while, but I couldn’t protest when they did something that was wrong. All it would have taken is one person testifying against me, that I’d criticised ISIS, and I’d have been slaughtered.”

Al-Raqqawi claims that he has not taken part in any executions and that he has not killed anyone.

  22. MONTREAL – Man dies after falling five storeys during Montreal Amnesty International event

The man was employed by a company that sets up rappelling events

A 33-year-old man died on Saturday morning after falling five storeys in downtown Montreal at the scene of an Amnesty International fundraiser.

The rappelling event – “Jumping for freedom with Amnesty International” – was taking place at the Maison du développement durable, at Ste-Catherine and Clark Sts.

The man fell at about 10 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Stéphane Smith, a spokesperson for Urgences Santé. Two other people were taken to hospital to be treated for nervous shock.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

The man worked for Décalade, the company that was overseeing the event, Amnesty said in a joint statement with the Maison du développement durable.

“Our thoughts go to the man’s family to whom we offer our most sincere condolences,” the organizations said.

The person who answered the phone at Décalade’s office on Saturday afternoon said he had no details about the incident.

Julien Dery donated money to Amnesty International through the rappelling fundraiser.

“I’m in shock to see this event happen like that,” said Dery, who arrived at the Maison du développement durable after the man had fallen.

Dery, who was a rock climber for 25 years, said this sort of down climbing is designed so it can be practiced by inexperienced climbers.

“Usually, it’s not that dangerous, because you have a third rope that supports you,” he said.

That third rope is used to belay the person descending. It’s supposed to be attached at the top of the descent and it requires a second person, also at the top, to do the belaying.

Dery said this is where something may have gone wrong on Saturday morning.

“The third rope is down here on the ground,” he said. “It should be placed on the top and fixed on the top … if the third rope was supposed to attach up there and it’s down on the ground, there’s a problem there.”

Investigators from Quebec’s workplace safety board have been dispatched to the scene, said Diane Thibault, a spokesperson the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail.

In its promotion of the event, scheduled to take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Amnesty International said: “To show our solidarity with human rights defenders, we would like to organize a fundraising event to show that we, too, are brave.”

CBC – Man dies after plummeting 5 storeys during charity fundraiser in Montreal

Urgences Santé confirms man, 33, was rappelling down side of building during Amnesty International event

A 33-year-old man has died after falling from a building in downtown Montreal Saturday while involved in a charity fund-raising event, according to Urgences Santé.

First responders say he was face-first rappelling, or deepelling, down the side of the building when he fell five storeys.

The man was involved in a fundraiser called Jumping for Freedom put on by the Montreal branch of Amnesty International.

“A member of the deepelling team, the company in charge of the activity, lost his life,” said Amnesty International in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with the family and we offer our most sincere condolences.”

The organization posted online Saturday afternoon that the event had been cancelled, saying that a “major accident” had occurred before the start of the activity.

The event was put on in collaboration with the la Maison du développement durable — the building from which the man fell. It’s also the site of Amnesty International’s Montreal headquarters.

Authorities were called around 10 a.m. to the corner of Ste-Catherine and Clark streets where the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two other people were taken to hospital and treated for nervous shock.

Urgences Santé confirms that the province’s workplace health and safety board (CNESST) is taking over the investigation.

Suchomel, who posted her eyewitness account of the Las Vegas massacre in astonishingly vivid detail to her Facebook page on Oct. 4, subsequently passed away in her home on Oct. 9 from what reports are claiming are ‘natural causes.’
Shockingly, just days before her death, Suchomel posted key details about the shooting to Facebook that contradicted the official narrative which claims that Stephen Paddock was the lone gunman.
