    • The talking heads are all saying that we really don’t have a military option in North Korea so we either get China to force North Korea to give up their nukes or kick the can down the road. Kicking this can down the road will end up causing a nuclear war with10s to 100s of millions of causalities. What we have to do is take out all of North Koreas military machine and then send in the troops to find and destroy the nuclear and missile facilities and all missiles and nuclear weapons. If we don’t do this we will be facing a surprise attack from North Korea any time Kim gets mad or wants a new bribe. We should have finished off North Korea and China in the 1950s but we didn’t and now we are paying the price. The Butchers Bill will be high for every nation involved but the only other option is leave the problem to the future administrations who will have to do this with North Korea better armed.

Having said that I don’t think kicking the can down the road is a real option, China and probably Russia want a conflict in the Korea peninsula right now for reasons of their own. Russia is increasing its military strength both conventional and nuclear. China is expanding its military and fortifying Islands that have traditionally belonged to other nations. We have the Russian Empire and the Chinese Empire moving to increase their territory We have the Persian Empire and the Ottoman Empire trying to reform, can anyone see any reason they don’t want us tied down in Korea?

      • Nork has powerful friends; in the first Korean War the Russians sent their pilots to kill our bombers and fighters, and, well, everyone knows the PRC PLA repelling the UN, US Marines, RoK army. Check youtube for various fiction PRC movies featuring their battling UN/US/RoK in Korea.

I think what Trump should do is withdraw from the nuclear test ban treaty and ask Congress that in order to preserve a credible nuclear deterrent, that we must begin Pu pit production and restart our nuclear weapons production line. This will shock all the NWO Globalists who have tied the US down to the level of other minimalist deterrent nations. Reassemble our science/engineering nuke evaluation teams on a war emergeny basis.

THAT will indicate a clean break with the past and send a clear message to ALL adversaries.

When the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moves their clock to one minute to Doomsday, then you will know that Trump has accomplished this.

  1. UN: Cholera outbreak in Yemen has spread and over 1,600 dead (alaraby, Jul 6, 2017)
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2017/7/6/un-cholera-outbreak-has-spread-to-all-yemens-provinces

“The United Nations says the cholera outbreak in war-torn Yemen has now spread to all 21 governorates and there have been 270,000 suspected cases and over 1,600 deaths from the disease since late April.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric says the World Health Organization and its partners received 400 tons of medical supplies and equipment Tuesday, including 30 ambulances and kits to treat 10,000 people in Aden and Hodeida.

Dujarric told reporters Wednesday that WHO’s partners will set up 2,350 beds at 600 points throughout Yemen to treat cholera victims with oral rehydration.

The World Food Programme said over 17 million Yemenis don’t know where their next meal will come from.

A two-year Saudi-led campaign against Houthi rebels has damaged infrastructure and caused medicine shortages in the Arab world’s poorest country.

The conflict has destroyed Yemen’s health infrastructure and health workers have not been paid for over six months.

WHO has been offering “incentives” to doctors, nurses, cleaners and paramedics to help contain the cholera outbreak.”

  2. US ready to consider Syria ‘no-fly zones’ if Putin and Trump find common ground at G20 meeting (RT, Jul 6, 2017)
    https://www.rt.com/usa/395427-tillerson-russia-us-syria/

“The US State Department has outlined its vision for resolving the conflict in Syria, which is expected to be a key point to be discussed during the first meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at the G20 summit in Hamburg.

“The United States is prepared to explore the possibility of establishing with Russia joint mechanisms for ensuring stability, including no-fly zones, on the ground ceasefire observers, and coordinated delivery of humanitarian assistance,” Rex Tillerson said in a statement released by the State Department.

Ahead of the July 7 meeting between the Russian and American presidents, Tillerson insisted that Russia has a “special responsibility” to aid the peace process.

“The United States believes Russia, as a guarantor of the Assad regime and an early entrant into the Syrian conflict, has a responsibility to ensure that the needs of the Syrian people are met and that no faction in Syria illegitimately re-takes or occupies areas liberated from ISIS’ or other terrorist groups’ control,” Tillerson said.

The US Secretary of State stressed further that Moscow has “an obligation” to prevent any potential use of chemical weapons by Syrian government forces…”

    • Russia: ‘Unwilling to see facts and complicit with militants’ – Zakharova slams US presence in Raqqa

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova slammed US-led coalition operations in Raqqa, suggesting that there are signs of “complicity with militants,” speaking at the press-conference in Moscow, Thursday.

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): “According to available information, Syrian terrorist groups plan stage provocations using chemical poisons, to provide justifications for US strikes against the positions of the Syrian government forces.”

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): “According to the reports, ISIS is transferring workshops and equipment that is intended for the release of munitions, including those equipped with chemical agents, from Raqqa to the controlled areas of the province of Deir ez-Zor.”

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): “Keeping in mind the repeated statements of the so-called anti-ISIS coalition that it completely blocked Raqqa, the unofficial capital of ISIS, and, I am citing, only a little bit remains for its complete liberation, it is suggested that the removal of such huge equipment by ISIS under the nose of the coalition tells at least about a selective unwillingness to see facts. It is possible to speak with a greater chance even of complicity with militants. We do not exclude that among these militants, there are also terrorists.”

  3. US, Turkish officials squabble over FETO suspects as report claims Erdogan behind failed coup (RT, Jul 6, 2017)
    https://www.rt.com/usa/395420-turkish-search-coup-embassy/

“Turkish government officials are bickering with the US embassy in Ankara over an investigation into two suspects accused of conducting an unlawful search of Turkish intelligence trucks illegally shipping weapons to Syria.

Istanbul’s chief public prosecutor says his office sent a letter to the US embassy, requesting information about Bayram Andac and Muharrem Gozukucuk, two men whom Turkish authorities say are imams of the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the group blamed for the July 2016 coup attempt. Andac and Gozukucuk had several telephone conversations with the American embassy in Ankara and the US consulate in Istanbul, the prosecutor said.

The US embassy issued a statement Wednesday, saying it never received the letter, however, and was only aware of it because of media reports.

The letter in question was sent on June 30, and received Wednesday afternoon, according to Turkish authorities.

“The letter regarding the telephone conversations of two suspects of the MIT [National Intelligence Organization] trucks case with the embassy staff was received by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara” Wednesday, Istanbul Chief Prosecutor Irfan Fidan told the Anadolu Agency.

Embassy officials then admitted they had received the request, telling the Daily Sabah, a pro-government newspaper, that they would respond to Fidan in the coming days.

Turkish prosecutors indicted Andac and Gozukucuk Tuesday, accusing the two men of personally overseeing a raid on trucks belonging to Turkey’s National Intelligence Directorate (MIT) on January 19, 2014.

The MIT trucks were bound for Syria when they were stopped and searched by the local gendarmerie in the Turkish border province of Adana after provincial prosecutors got a tip-off that the trucks were carrying weapons for rebel and terrorist groups in Syria. Such searches are prohibited by Turkish law, according to the Anadolu news agency.

At least eight members of the Turkish military were arrested and charged with smuggling weapons to Syria. Three other officers were arrested on treason and espionage charges for carrying out the inspection. Nearly 60 people have been arrested for their involvement in the search.

Two journalists from Turkey’s independent Cumhuriyet newspaper were convicted on charges of “revealing state secrets.” In February 2016, however, Turkey’s constitutional court ruled that the journalists’ rights were violated when they were arrested.

Turkish officials are seeking information from the US missions about multiple phone calls from Andac and Gozukucuk that occurred both a day and two months after the incident, the Daily Sabah reported. Fidan has requested that embassy officials disclose the contents of the calls.

The indictment also accused Fethullah Gulen, a cleric in exile in the US, of ordering his followers to expose the MIT weapons smuggling. The arrested officials have been linked to FETO, Gulen’s group, the Daily Sabah reported.

Turkey is seeking Gulen’s extradition to face trial for “multiple crimes.” Ankara has further accused him of plotting to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Thousands of officials throughout Turkey have been charged with taking part in the failed July 2016 coup attempt that killed 250 people and injured nearly 2,200 more. External groups have found no evidence linking Gulen with the coup.

As the US and Turkish officials argue whether the letter requesting details of the phone calls was received, the Stockholm Center for Freedom (SCF) has meanwhile published a report accusing Erdogan of orchestrating the failed coup.

SCF is an advocacy organization that focuses on Turkey and is run by self-exiled journalists. The 191-page report reviewed publicly available data, coup indictments, testimonials in court trials, private interviews, reviews of military expert opinions and other evidence collected by researchers.

“This was a continuation of a series of false flags that were uncovered in the last couple of years under the authoritarian rule of [the] Erdogan regime and it was certainly the bloodiest one,” SCF President Abdullah Bozkurt said in a statement. “Erdogan appears to have tapped on widely circulated coup rumors in the Turkish capital and staged [his] own show to steal wind and set up his opposition for a persecution.””

  4. Turkey accuses the US of creating ‘terrorist armies’ and warns of military intervention (express, Jul 6, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/825306/Turkey-Erdogan-US-Donald-Trump-terrorist-armies-military-intervention-Syria-ISIS

“TURKEY has lashed out at Donald Trump and accused the US of creating “terrorist armies” in a sensational claim.

Turkey’s deputy prime minister ravished the leader of the free world for backing Syrian Kurdish YPG forces, which Turkey has deemed a terror organisation.

Numan Kurtulmus said: “There has never been an incident where a group in the Middle East has been armed, and they returned the weapons.

“[The United States] have formed more than a terrorist organisation there, they formed a small-scale army.”

Turkish president Recep Erdogan also warned that Turkey is ready to intervene militarily in north Syria to repel Syrian Kurdish forces.

Turkey have long branded the YPG as a “terrorist” group, although it forms a major part of the US coalition campaign to capture ISIS’ stronghold of Raqqa, Syria.

Ankara officials denigrate the YPG insisting they represent a security threat.

They see it as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been fighting an insurgency against the Turkish state for decades, according to reports.

Tensions flared between the US and Turkey after US officials told Reuters last month, weapons provided to the YPG will be taken back once ISIS was defeated.

But US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has left the possibility of longer-term assistance to the YPG claiming they may need further artillery for the future.

Mr Mattis said: “We’ll be recovering (the weapons) during the battle, repairing them.

“When they don’t need certain things anymore, we’ll replace those with something they do need.”

Turkish president Erdogan reportedly echoed Mr Kurtulmus comments, calling the US a sponsor of the “terrorist” YPG group.

Speaking ahead of the G20 leaders summit in Hamburg later this week, he drew further tensions with the US, siding with Qatar over its dispute with other Arab states.

Blasting their 13-point demands as unacceptable, Erdogan told France 24: “When it comes to this list of 13 items … it’s not acceptable under any circumstances.”

He added: “We remain loyal to our agreement with Qatar. If it requests us to leave, we will not stay where we are not wanted.””

  5. *Suspending Qatar’s GCC membership: How it works (gulfnews, Jul 5, 2017):*

“Dubai: The possible process of freezing Qatar’s membership of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) could be initiated by a single member state, the GCC statute stipulates.

The GCC, formed in 1981, comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

As a deepening dispute that emerged publicly last month between Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE on one side and Qatar on the other is not showing signs of abating, senior officials, including Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa and UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash, have been hinting at a “divorce” that would see Qatar out of the alliance that has so far weather various types of crises.

Under the GCC bylaws, a member’s suspension talks have to be held at an extraordinary session of the GCC Supreme Council convened at the request of any member seconded by another member.

The meeting must be held within a maximum of five days of the call and will be considered valid only if at least four of the six member states attend it.

Should there be a request to hold an extraordinary meeting in the case of Qatar, it will have to be chaired by Kuwait or Oman as they are the only two countries not involved directly in the dispute, Saudi daily Makkah reported on Wednesday.

Article Seven of the bylaws stipulates that the chair of the annual GCC session involved in a pending issue cannot chair the meeting dedicated to discussing the issue. The Supreme Council has to designate an interim chair for the meeting.

Contrary to procedural issues that require decisions to be issued by a majority, the Qatari situation is considered a substantive issue and an agreement on any decision by the Supreme Council will be sufficient, the daily said.

Each member state has one vote and has the right to abstain from voting. No proxy voting is allowed and no country can represent or vote in lieu of another member.

The order of voting follows the Arabic alphabet, meaning that the UAE goes first, followed by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait.”

  6. SYRIA – Thousands of Kurds protest against Turkish attacks on Afrin town

Thousands of Kurdish citizens took to the street in Afrin district in Syria’s northwestern Aleppo province on Wednesday, protesting the Turkish offensive against the area.

Nawaf Xelil, a Kurdish analyst and former official from the Democratic Union Party (PYD), told ARA News that more than 100,000 people in Afrin (Efrîn in Kurdish) protested against the Turkish plans to attack Afrin.

On Wednesday, a protest was launched against the Turkish plans to attack Afrin, with slogans in Arabic and Kurdish, ‘No, to the Turkish occupation of Efrin’, ‘Efrin will become a cemetery for the mercenaries of Erdogan and his aides’.

The Kurdish city of Efrîn hosts thousands of displaced people and has become a safe haven for many civilians fleeing violence in other parts of Syria.

Until now, 3 Kurdish civilians were killed and 7 injured by Turkish artillery shelling this week.

Sipan Hemo, the general commander of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), said the Kurdish YPG fighters are ready to resist the Turkish troops if Turkey would launch operation Euphrates Sword in Afrin.

“We will fight with all our capabilities, and it will be the first encounter for us to face the Turks directly. They are aggressors on our land, and enter land that is not theirs,” he told Asharq al-Awsat.

“We are in full readiness to thwart the plans of the Turkish occupation and force them to withdraw from every inch of Syrian lands,” he said.

    http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/qatar/qatar-crisis/read-foreign-ministers-full-qatar-statement-1.2053925

“Cairo: The Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt issued a joint statement following their meeting in Cairo on Wednesday.

Following is the text of the statement:

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain and Arab Republic of Egypt met in Cairo on Wednesday, the 5th of July 2017 to consult on the ongoing efforts to stop the State of Qatar’s support for extremism and terrorism and its interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries and the threats against Arab national security and international peace and security due to Qatar’s policies.

It was stressed that the position of the four countries is based on the importance of adherence to international conventions, charters and resolutions as well as the principles stipulated in the charters of the United Nations, the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in addition to the conventions on combating international terrorism with emphasis on the following principles:

    1) Commitment to combat extremism and terrorism in all its forms and to prevent their financing or the provision of safe havens.

    2) Prohibiting all acts of incitement and all forms of expression which spread, incite, promote or justify hatred and violence.

    3) Full commitment to Riyadh Agreement 2013 and the supplementary agreement and its executive mechanism for 2014 within the framework of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for Arab States.

    4) Commitment to all the outcomes of the Arab-Islamic-US Summit held in Riyadh in May 2017.

    5) Refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of States and from supporting illegal entities.

    6) The responsibility of all States of international community to confront all forms of extremism and terrorism as a threat to international peace and security.

The four countries affirmed that supporting extremism, terrorism and interfering in the internal affairs of the Arab countries is a matter that cannot be tolerated or procrastinated and that the list of demands made to the State of Qatar came within the framework of ensuring adherence to the six principles outlined above, protecting Arab national security, maintaining international peace and security, combating extremism and terrorism and providing appropriate circumstances to reach a political settlement of the region’s crises where it is no longer possible to tolerate the destructive role being played by the State of Qatar.

The four Arab countries stressed that the measures taken and sustained by them are the result of the violation by the State of Qatar of its obligations and commitments under international law and its continued interference in the affairs of the Arab states and its support for extremism and terrorism and the consequent threats to the security of the region.

The four countries expressed their thanks and appreciation to His Highness Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, for his efforts and endeavour to resolve the crisis with the State of Qatar and expressed sorrow over negligence, lack of seriousness and the negative response received by the State of Qatar to deal with the roots of the problem and lack of readiness to reconsider its policies and practices, reflecting a lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation.

The four countries stressed their keenness on the importance of the relationship between the Arab peoples and the deep appreciation to the Qatari people, expressing the hope that wisdom would prevail and the State of Qatar may make the right decision.

The four countries stressed that the time has come for the international community to shoulder its responsibility to put an end to the support of extremism and terrorism and that there is no room for any entity or party involved in practicing, supporting or financing of extremism and terrorism in the international community or to be as a partner in the efforts of peaceful settlement of political crises in the region.

In this context, the four countries expressed their appreciation for the decisive position adopted by US President Donald Trump on the need for an immediate end to the support and elimination of extremism and terrorism and the intolerability of any violations by any party in this regard.

The ministers agreed to follow up the situation and hold their next meeting in Manama.”

  8. Philippines: Muslim-only ID card should be ‘rejected outright’ – watchdog (asiancorrespondent, Jul 6, 2017)
    https://asiancorrespondent.com/2017/07/philippines-muslim-id-card-rejected-outright-watchdog/#cQP0t7VzwUVQuCmU.97

“PHILIPPINES authorities have been accused of discrimination following a proposal to impose a mandatory identification card system for Muslims in the country’s Central Luzon Region.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said such a policy, announced this week, threatened to single out Muslims in the predominantly Catholic country amid the government’s effort to combat terrorism.

“The IDs could also violate the rights to equal protection of the law, freedom of movement as well as other basic rights,” researcher at HRW’s Asia Division Carlos H. Conde said in a statement on Thursday.

“ID requirements for Muslims should be rejected outright.”…”

    • “The IDs could also violate the rights to equal protection of the law, freedom of movement as well as other basic rights,”

      Why, yes, it could.

On the flip side, what happens to non-Muslims in Islamic nations?

Considering that Muslims are responsible for almost all unrest and conflicts in the Philippines, this may be something that is well-deserved.

For anyone who is tempted to squeal about “collective punishment”, please try to remember that terrorist attacks are a pluperfect example of collective punishment. Sooner or later, most countries will learn that Islamic terrorism must fought on its own terms.

  21. Could America shield Alaska from a N.Korean missile?

It is every Alaskan’s nightmare: finding themselves within range of a North Korean missile. As that fear came one step closer to reality this week, America’s ability to block an incoming attack is under scrutiny.

On Tuesday the northwestern US state awoke to the news that Pyongyang had test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile which — though it came crashing down in the Sea of Japan — had a probable range of over 5,500 kilometers (3,400 miles), enough to reach Alaskan shores.

The US military has faith that its high-tech defensive systems could fend off any attack from North Korea — at least for now.

  22. Venezuela govt backers attack lawmakers in congress

Caracas (AFP) – Dozens of pro-government activists stormed into the grounds of Venezuela’s National Assembly Wednesday and attacked lawmakers, leaving several hurt and bleeding.

Intruders brandishing sticks and dressed in red broke through the front gate and set off fireworks in the interior gardens of the building, AFP journalists at the scene said.

The government supporters reached as far as the corridors of the congressional building, striking and injuring at least three lawmakers. The attackers ordered journalists to stop filming and taking photographs and leave the premises.

  24. Mob Attacks Maduro Opponents as It Storms Venezuela’s National Assembly

A mob stormed Venezuela’s opposition-dominated National Assembly on Wednesday with the apparent acquiescence of government troops and carried out a startling attack on lawmakers and journalists.

Bloodied lawmakers were treated for broken ribs and head injuries, and journalists said the attackers had stolen their equipment. The episode in Caracas, which coincided with Venezuela’s Independence Day, was a sharp escalation of lawlessness in a country roiled by a failing economy and daily street demonstrations.

“We’re here to defend Venezuela; that’s what we were elected to do,” Armando Armas, an opposition lawmaker wearing a bloodied white shirt, said in a video as two people cleaned what appeared to be head wounds. “Even if it costs us our lives.”

  25. Venezuela’s Default Risk Is Rising

Bets on a Venezuelan default are climbing as international reserves slump toward $10 billion amid anti-government protests and President Nicolas Maduro’s push to rewrite the constitution.

The implied probability of the country missing a payment over the next 12 months rose to 56 percent in June, according to credit-default swaps data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s the highest level since December. The odds of a credit event over the next five years increased to 91 percent last month.

  26. Saga of House Dems’ suspect IT workers gets weirder, with untraceable money, millions lost
By LU Staff July 5, 2017

A Pakistani family under criminal investigation by the U.S. Capitol Police for abusing their access to the House of Representatives information technology (IT) system may have engaged in myriad other questionable schemes besides allegedly placing “ghost employees” on the congressional payroll.

Imran Awan, his wife Hina, and brothers Abid and Jamal collectively netted more than $4 million in salary as IT administrators for House Democrats between 2009 and 2017. Yet the absence of signs of wealth displayed among them raise questions such as was the money sent overseas or did something other than paychecks motivate their actions?

  27. Muslim cleric dares to blame radicalization of Australian man on WHAT?

Cleanup in Aisle 4! A shopper there dropped a jar of truth, and liberals are going ballistic at the sight of the contents.

On Tuesday, an Australian imam spoke up regarding the case of a fellow countryman and doctor named Tareq Kamleh. Kamleh, who also answers to the name “Dr. Jihad,” fled to Syria in 2015 and was not seen again until Tuesday, when he turned up in a newly released ISIS recruitment video.

In the clip, which follows, the bad doctor can be heard spouting the usual terrorist propaganda as he calls on lone wolves to target the Aussie homeland. He urges Muslims everywhere to head to Syria and join the caliphate. He also calls for bloodshed against nonbelievers.

After watching the video, the cleric, Mohammad Tawhidi, was incredulous. But then he dropped this bombshell:

I can’t blame him, it’s my religion. I can’t blame it on education, because he’s a doctor, he’s had the best education. So I have to blame it on the religion.

      http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/rights-group-warns-bind-migrants-eu-libya-48465772

“European Union leaders on Thursday reaffirmed the need to help Libya prevent migrants from being smuggled to Europe, despite renewed opposition from human rights groups that such a policy is “reckless” given Libya’s lawlessness.

Interior ministers meeting in Tallinn, Estonia, also called for aid groups conducting rescue operations in the Mediterranean to follow a code of conduct, after prosecutors in Italy have accused some of complicity with Libyan-based smugglers.

And the ministers vowed to crack down on countries that refuse to take their nationals home when their asylum bids fail in Europe, including imposing limits to visa programs.

“This is an unprecedented initiative,” Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti said.

The ministers met as Italy has increased complaints that it can no longer shoulder the burden of Europe’s migrant crisis alone. Italy has threatened to close its ports to non-Italian flagged rescue ships in hopes of forcing other European countries to take them in.

The interior ministers mentioned “disembarkation,” issues in their final communique, but offered no details or commitments.

Ahead of the meeting, Amnesty International issued a report highly criticizing the EU emphasis on helping Libya better patrol its coasts to prevent migrants from leaving, saying the policy shift risked victimizing desperate migrants even more…”

In some ways the financial loss is most important because hitting wealthy commercial interests in the hip pocket is one of the only ways to get them into gear.

When Britain’s aristocracy finally realizes that it’s not just kiddie concerts and football matches that are dangerous to attend maybe they, too, will begin to question the sanity of Muslim “immigration”.

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/malaysia-indonesia-muslim-groups-call-starbucks-boycott-48466888

“Muslim groups in Malaysia and Indonesia have called for a boycott of Starbucks because of the coffee chain’s support for LGBT rights.

Malaysian group Perkasa, which supports a hard-line form of Islam and nationalism, this week called on its more than 500,000 members to stay away from Starbucks coffee shops. This week and last, leaders of Indonesia’s second largest mainstream Muslim group, Muhammadiyah, with an estimated 29 million members, denounced the chain.

The groups were apparently reacting to comments made several years ago by former CEO Howard Schultz in support of gay rights that drew renewed attention amid an increasingly anti-LGBT climate in both of the predominantly Muslim countries.

Perkasa said in a statement that the Malaysian government should revoke the trading license given to Starbucks and other companies such as Microsoft and Apple that support LGBT rights and same-sex marriage.

Amini Amir Abdullah, who heads Perkasa’s Islamic affairs bureau, said Muslims should stay away from Starbucks because its pro-gay rights policy is against Islam and Malaysia’s constitution…”

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/egyptian-police-detain-chinese-uighurs-wide-sweep-48468417

“Chinese students from the Uighur ethnic minority have been detained in Egypt in a broad police sweep that has shaken the country’s sizeable Uighur student and expatriate community, activists said Thursday.

Egyptian police have detained scores of Uighur students, including 20 from Cairo’s Al-Azhar University who were stopped in the city of Alexandria on their way out of the country late Wednesday and told they would be deported to China, said Abduweli Ayup, a Uighur activist in Turkey.

Ayup said he had heard directly from some of the detainees and their relatives.

The detentions come amid reports that authorities in the Uighur homeland of Xinjiang in western China are seeking the immediate return of Uighurs studying abroad. Authorities in Xinjiang have significantly tightened security measures in the past year, as well as controls on religious expression, in what officials characterize as an “unyielding” campaign against Islamic extremism brewing in the region.

Overseas Uighurs and human rights groups say the measures have turned Xinjiang into a police state with widespread arbitrary detentions and invasive surveillance.

The detentions in Egypt, a popular destination for religious study among China’s Muslims, were seen by activists as a possible sign that China’s security crackdown in Xinjiang is extending its reach overseas…”

“The European Parliament on Thursday advised the European Union to freeze accession talks with Turkey amid growing concerns over the country’s human rights and democracy. Turkey rejected the parliament’s move, calling it an attempt to “sabotage” relations with the EU.

The legislature voted 477-64 with 97 abstentions to approve a non-binding report recommending the suspension of the negotiations in the wake Turkey’s referendum in April that approved constitutional amendments to give the president sweeping new powers.

The parliament calls on the EU’s 28 states to formally suspend the talks “without delay” if the constitutional reforms are implemented without change in Turkey.

Omer Celik, the Turkish minister in charge of relations with the EU, described it as being “a report geared toward sabotaging relations.”

“A rights group says Pakistan has executed 464 prisoners since it lifted a moratorium on capital punishment after a Taliban attack on a school in late 2014.

The Justice Project Pakistan, which is opposed to capital punishment, says Pakistan now has the fifth highest rate of executions in the world, after China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

The group says Pakistan has executed 44 people this year, around the same rate as the previous year, in which 87 people were executed.

Pakistan halted executions in 2008 due to pressure from rights groups but reinstated capital punishment after militants attacked an army-run school in Peshawar, killing some 150 people, mostly children.”

    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2017/7/6/amnesty-internationals-turkey-director-detained

“Amnesty International’s Turkey director and a number of other activists are being detained following a raid on their meeting near Istanbul on Wednesday.

Idil Eser, director of Amnesty International Turkey, was among 12 people picked up by Turkish security forces, as well as activists and trainers.

The swoop took place during a “digital security and information management workshop” on Buyukada, one of the Princes’ Islands off Istanbul.

Turkish daily Hurriyet said 12 were arrested in the police raid.

There is no immediate indication of what the rights activists have been accused of.

“We are profoundly disturbed and outraged that some of Turkey’s leading human rights defenders, including the Director of Amnesty International Turkey, should have been detained so blatantly without cause,” said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

He said they must be “immediately and unconditionally released”. The whereabouts of those detained is currently unknown.

Amnesty International’s Turkey chair, Taner Kilic, was detained a month ago on “baseless charges”, accused of links to the alleged mastermind of the 15 July failed coup Fethullah Gulen.

Turkey remains under a state of emergency following the coup with thousands arrested in raids by security forces.

Amnesty said the seven other activists detained included Ilknur Ustun of the Women’s Coalition, lawyer Gunal Kursun and Veli Acu of the Human Rights Agenda Association.

Two foreign trainers for the workshop – a German and a Swedish national – as well as the hotel owner, were also detained in the raid, it added.”

  35. Iraqi Kurdish leader says no turning back on independence bid (reuters, Jul 6, 2017)
    http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideast-crisis-iraq-kurds-idUKKBN19R1ST

“Iraq’s Kurdish leader said on Thursday that there was no turning back on a bid to achieve an independent Kurdish state, but he would pursue it through dialogue with Baghdad and regional powers to avoid conflict.

Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), told Reuters in an interview that the timetable for independence after a Sept. 25 vote on the issue was “flexible but not open-ended”. He expected a “yes vote”.

The vote could turn into another regional flashpoint, with Turkey, Iran and Syria, along with Iraq the states with sizeable Kurdish populations, all resolutely opposed to an independent Kurdistan in northern Iraq. But Barzani played down such fears.

Within Iraq’s borders, there is growing concern the real purpose of the referendum is not secession, but to strengthen Kurdish claims over hotly disputed territory adjoining recognised KRG boundaries, such as the oil-rich region and city of Kirkuk, whose future has been in play for over a decade.

Inside the KRG, parties such as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of Jalal Talabani or the dissident Gorran group, all favour independence but not necessarily under the leadership of Barzani and his Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

At his palace in the hillside village of Salahaddin, Barzani said the vote would decide the fate of Kirkuk, which Kurdish Peshmerga forces prevented Islamic State from capturing in 2014.

“Whatever the people of Kirkuk decide within the referendum, that decision should be respected,” said a relaxed Barzani.

The Peshmerga effectively runs Kirkuk, also claimed by Turkmen and Arabs. Hardline Iran-backed Iraqi Shi’ite militias have threatened to expel the Kurds by force from this region and three other disputed areas – Sinjar, Makhmour and Khanaqin.

Barzani, a Kurdish nationalist who has long championed the rights of his people, said negotiations with Baghdad, neighbours and international powers would start immediately after the vote in order to reach an amicable agreement.

“Our main goal is to implement and achieve the decision of our people through peace and dialogue,” he said, wearing his traditional Peshmerga uniform…”

“Soldiers in Niger killed 14 unarmed civilians after mistaking them for Boko Haram militants during a patrol in the remote southeast of the country, a senior regional official said on Thursday.

Nigerien soldiers were patrolling a militarily restricted zone around the village of Abadam near Lake Chad on Wednesday afternoon when they opened fire on what turned out to be farmers, according to Yahaya Godi, the Secretary General of the Diffa region of southeast Niger.

“Fourteen people are dead. Abadam is a village located in the red zone and has been prohibited for a very long time,” said Godi. “Any individual seen in the area is considered Boko Haram.”

He said two of the dead were from Niger and the rest from neighbouring Nigeria, where Boko Haram is based and from which the jihadist group has sometimes carried out cross-border attacks into Niger, Cameroon and Chad.

It was not immediately clear why the civilians were in the restricted area and what made the soldiers open fire. Nigerien army officials were not reachable for comment…”

  37. Bangladesh detentions: ‘Hundreds being held in secret’ (BBC, Jul 6, 2017)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-40519346

“The Bangladesh authorities have illegally detained hundreds of people since 2013 and held them in secret custody, Human Rights Watch says.

In a report, the US-based group says that of 90 people abducted in mysterious circumstances last year, 21 were killed.

Nine others, including two sons of opposition politicians, had disappeared.

The Bangladesh government said it would act promptly on any solid evidence.

In the report, entitled We Don’t Have Him, Human Rights Watch also said there had been a number of suspicious deaths in custody.

“Bangladesh security forces appear to have a free hand in detaining people, deciding on their guilt or innocence, and determining their punishment, including whether they have the right to be alive,” said Brad Adams, the group’s Asia director.

“The disappearances are well documented and reported, yet the government persists in this abhorrent practice with no regard for the rule of law.”

Nineteen activists of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party have not been seen for three years; and several dozen people have suffered this fate since the Awami League came to power eight years ago.

Human Rights Watch also says there is an “alarming” trend of people being secretly detained and then dying in suspicious circumstances, such as alleged gunfights which relatives believe were faked.

Going on eyewitness testimony, the lobby group believes two police units have carried out most of the abuses.

Human Rights Watch wants the authorities in Dhaka to investigate its findings, and those suspected of abuses to be prosecuted.

“The Bangladesh government should immediately stop this widespread practice of enforced disappearances, order prompt, impartial, and independent investigations into these allegations, provide answers to families, and prosecute security forces responsible for such egregious rights violations,” its report says.

Bangladesh Information Minister Hassan Ul-Haq Inu told the BBC that if solid evidence was given, the authorities would look at it and respond very quickly.

But he insisted that proper procedures were always followed with detainees.”

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/825637/migrants-eu-bill-gates-angela-merkel-nigel-farage

“NIGEL Farage has claimed unsustainable migration is turning European leaders “against each other”.

The former Ukip leader blasted the European Union’s open-door migrant policy and hit out at “Merkel madness”.

Nigel Farage was speaking the day after Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates admitted EU leaders needed to make it “more difficult” for migrants to reach Europe.

This was a huge U-turn on the 61-year-old’s previous stance, with the computer chief last year saying Germany and Sweden should be “congratulated” for their tactics.

Mr Farage said he “could not believe” the extent of Mr Gates’ change of heart, stating it was yet another nail in the coffin for the EU.

He said on LCB: “Bill Gates – yes, Bill gates – has blasted Germany’s open-door migrant policy…”

The police have said that one of the injured men is very seriously wounded.

Emergency services surrounded a house close to the location of the shooting, where they believed the suspect had barricaded himself in.

  40. France to ban sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2040

Move by Emmanuel Macron’s government comes a day after Volvo said it would only make fully electric or hybrid cars from 2019

France will end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 as part of an ambitious plan to meet its targets under the Paris climate accord, Emmanuel Macron’s government has announced.

The announcement comes a day after Volvo said it would only make fully electric or hybrid cars from 2019 onwards, a decision hailed as the beginning of the end for the internal combustion engine’s dominance of motor transport after more than a century.

Nicolas Hulot, the country’s new ecology minister, said: “We are announcing an end to the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040.” Hulot added that the move was a “veritable revolution”.

He said it would be a “tough” objective for carmakers but France’s industry was well equipped to make the switch. “Our [car]makers have enough ideas in the drawer to nurture and bring about this promise … which is also a public health issue.”

Hulot insisted that the decision was a question of public health policy and “a way to fight against air pollution”. The veteran environmental campaigner was among several political newcomers to whom Macron gave top jobs in his government.

Pascal Canfin, the head of WWF France and a former Green politician who served in François Hollande’s government, said the new policy platform to counter climate change went further than previous administrations in France. “It places France among the leaders of climate action in the world,” he told France Inter radio.
