US shoots down Syrian plane ‘in self defence’ (express, Jun 18, 2017)

“THE US has shot down a Syrian warplane in ‘self defence’ following an attack which left coalition-backed fighters injured.
The US Central Command issued a statement confirming they had shot the plane out of the sky on Sunday as it flew over the war-torn country.
The Syrian regime’s SU-22 aircraft is said to have dropped bombs near coalition-backed fighters, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The SDF were attacked in Ja’Din, a town they control south of Tabqah.
Several fighters were wounded in the onslaught, and were partially driven from the town as the pro-regime forces advanced.
A US F/A-18E Super Hornet immediately retaliated with a “show of force” and shot the plane down.
The US-led coalition said it was targeted “in collective self-defense of Coalition-partnered forces.”
The coalition issued a statement saying: “Coalition aircraft conducted a show of force and stopped the initial pro-regime advance toward the SDF-controlled town.
“The Coalition’s mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
“The Coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend Coalition or partner forces from any threat.
“The Coalition presence in Syria addresses the imminent threat ISIS in Syria poses globally.
“The demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces toward Coalition and partner forces in Syria conducting legitimate counter-ISIS operations will not be tolerated.
“The Coalition calls on all parties to focus their efforts on the defeat of ISIS, which is our common enemy and the greatest threat to regional and worldwide peace and security.”
The attack began 4.30pm local time (2.30pm BST), and at 6.43pm local time (4.30pm BST) the warplane dropped bombs over Ja’din. “The demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces toward Coalition and partner forces in Syria conducting legitimate counter-ISIS operations will not be tolerated.
“The Coalition calls on all parties to focus their efforts on the defeat of ISIS, which is our common enemy and the greatest threat to regional and worldwide peace and security.”

The SDF was on an anti-ISIS mission in the town, codenamed Operation Inherent Resolve.
But the Syrian army said the plane was also on a mission against ISIS, and the pilot was missing after the plane was hit.
They said it was a “flagrant attack was an attempt to undermine the efforts of the army as the only effective force capable with its allies … in fighting terrorism across its territory.
“This comes at a time when the Syrian army and its allies were making clear advances in fighting the Daesh (Islamic State) terrorist group.”
Following the attack the Coalition contacted Russia, an ally of Syria and it beleaguered leader Basahr al-Assad, to broker a halt to the attack.
The statement says the team contacted Moscow by phone using an ‘established de-confliction line’ to de-escalate the situation.
The US-led coalition is trying to drive out ISIS from Syria, where its numbers and territory have been significantly reduced over the past year.”

Google will increase its use of technology to identify extremist and terrorism-related videos across its sites, which include YouTube, and will boost the number of people who screen for terrorism-related content, Google’s General Counsel Kent Walker wrote in an editorial in the Financial Times Sunday. The company will also be more aggressive in putting warnings on and limiting the reach of content that, while not officially forbidden, is still inflammatory.
“While we and others have worked for years to identify and remove content that violates our policies, the uncomfortable truth is that we, as an industry, must acknowledge that more needs to be done,” Walker wrote.

Fairfax County, Virginia, police believe they have found the remains of a missing teen girl and said they have taken someone into custody.
Police said the 17-year-old girl’s remains were found in a pond.
The suspect taken into custody has not been charged, according to police.

“A young man was stabbed and had his throat slit in front of horrified shoppers on a busy west London street Friday afternoon. No arrests have been made so far.
Southall Broadway was sealed off by police officers after being called at 12.20pm to the scene of the stabbing.
The teenaged male victim was quickly given first aid, then rushed to hospital by air ambulance. His injuries were later confirmed by the police not to have been life-threatening, the Evening Standard has reported.
An witness to the incident, who asked not to be named, told the paper: “There was a bit of a commotion and then this man just collapsed in the street.
“Within seconds an ambulance and about four police vans arrived at the scene. They started giving him first aid around his neck.
“It must have been within 30 seconds or so a helicopter arrived and two or three police cans started going around the side streets.”
“The man was outside walking and somebody came and randomly stabbed him in the side of his back and slit his throat.”
She added: “People were just completely shocked and some just started taking cover in the shops thinking it might be another terror attack.”
A spokesman for the Met Police has said that there was no reason to believe at this stage that the attack was terror related, and that no arrests have been made so far…”

“The Pakistan Hindu Council has appealed to the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the rise in kidnappings, forced conversions and forced marriages of underage Hindu girls to Muslim men in Sindh.
An meeting of the council was held on Sunday to discuss the issue after media reports emerged earlier this week of the case of 16-year-old Ravita Meghwadh from Tharparkar whose family alleges she was abducted, forcibly converted and married off to a Muslim man “twice her age” in Umerkot.
Pakistan Hindu Council patron-in-chief and MNA Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani attended the meeting along with Hotchand Kirmani, Paman Lal Rathi, Dr Deepak Kumar and Raja Asar Mal, according to a press release issued on Sunday.
“The situation in the area from where Ravita was kidnapped is still very tense and the victim’s family is reportedly [being] forced to leave home,” the statement said.
MNA Vankwani demanded that Ravita be rescued, saying such incidents could be described as social crimes in any civilised society but in Sindh, hate-mongering elements were presenting it [abduction and forced conversion] as a good deed under the garb of religion.
He said the council had never opposed conversion to Islam if it is done wilfully by the person.
“But the situation in Sindh is entirely different where the focus is only to convert kidnapped Hindu girls with the sole purpose of marrying them without their consent,” he added.
The parliamentarian criticised the Sindh government for not passing the forced conversion bill which would have offered some respite to religious minorities. The bill officially titled Criminal Law (Protection of Minorities) Bill was passed unanimously by the Sindh Assembly last year, but the governor refused to sign it into law and sent it back to the assembly asking them to “reconsider it”.
Speaking of another forced conversion incident, Vankwani said 15-year-old Ganga was kidnapped by a man named Qasim Hajam and forced to convert and marry at gunpoint.
He said the rise of such horrific incidents showed that the government had failed to provide security to non-Muslims and had left a negative impact on the socio-psychological condition of minorities.
“Five thousand Pakistani Hindus are being forced to migrate every year,” said Vankwani. “Remaining a poor community, they have no other option but to keep quiet.”
The meeting’s participants expressed sorrow that it had been more than 15 days since Ravita was allegedly kidnapped but the police had still not arrested the perpetrators because they were influential people.
They said the abductors generally tend to present the girl in court after a couple of weeks with a conversion certificate from any madrasa to justify their crime and that presented legal cover for the police to do nothing.
When these girls are presented in court, they lack even the basic understanding of their newly-adopted religion and are not even eligible to acquire an identity card because they are so young, the participants noted.
They urged Vankwani to play his role as a politician and public figure to involve all segments of the society to protest against forced conversions and marriages.”
TWO people are feared dead and several injured after a van reportedly rammed into pedestrians in a “terrorist attack” outside a mosque in north London.
One man was arrested after witnesses said the van deliberately accelerated into a crowd of Muslim worshippers on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park.
London’s Evening Standard reports the van driver was armed with a knife and jumped out of the vehicle and stabbed one person. Others said there were three white men in the van and two escaped.
