Coast Guard: FBI investigating report of dirty bomb in South Carolina

UPDATE: FOX confirms the story, and the port is cleared and reopened.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) – The U.S. Coast Guard is telling WCSC-TV in South Carolina that both state and federal authorities are investigating a potential dirty bomb threat at the Wando Terminal Wednesday night.

According to witnesses on the scene, the terminal was evacuated and agents were seen taping off the ship.

A dirty bomb is an explosive made with radioactive material.

Emergency officials report radiation has not been detected as they comb the vessel.

Judge for yourself hers the source on the fact George Webb.

  2. I want to correct the description of a Dirty Bomb, they are not made with or of radioactive material they are made of conventional explosives which are then wrapped in radioactive material. This is not in any way a nuclear weapon. The radioactive material will carry the same distance of other shrapnel and can be cleaned up in a few days to a few weeks.

Reuters: Mideast firm to operate new cargo terminal at Port Canaveral, Florida

A Middle Eastern-owned company landed its first North American port operations contract on Monday, a 35-year agreement with Port Canaveral on Florida’s east coast.

Under terms of the lease, Gulftainer, a wholly-owned subsidiary of United Arab Emirates-based Crescent Enterprises, will invest up to $100 million in equipment and employees to operate a container and cargo terminal under construction at Port Canaveral, just south of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy Space Center.

“Our intent is to reach up into that southeast manufacturing belt and into the traditional heartland markets for distribution and logistics,” Port Canaveral Chief Executive John Walsh said at a signing ceremony.

“We’re well-positioned to reach well in through the Caribbean Islands, Latin America, South America, over to Africa, and pick up the global trade routes to northern Europe, into the Middle East and Asia,” Walsh said.

Port directors considered several international operators before selecting Gulftainer for the contract, which was not competitively bid.
