  1. USA: Scuffles break out as anti-Sarsour protesters rally outside CUNY

Scuffles broke out as scores of people rallied outside the City University of New York (CUNY), in New York’s Manhattan, Thursday, to demonstrate against the university’s invitation to Palestinian-American political activist Linda Sarsour to deliver a commencement speech at a graduation ceremony scheduled for June 1.

I saw this vile creature declare publicly and loudly that mohamed was a Feminist, and Environmentalist, a HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST and then some: but I cannot find the clip any longer. Anyway the “pussi-hat” wearers and assorted Nazifas are very much with her, and what she stands for:

“For the departing foreign minister, Ana Palacio, whose center-right government staunchly supported the American-led war in Iraq and lost the election, the answer is clear. ”We are giving birth to a new world, and it is sad and dangerous and sick,” Mrs. Palacio said in an interview. ”We are giving a signal to terrorists that they can have their way because we have given in.””

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/bangladesh-removes-lady-justice-statue-court-complex-47655099

“A sculptor says authorities in Bangladesh have removed a Lady Justice statue from the Supreme Court premises as Islamist hardliners have been pressing for months, terming it anti-Islamic.

The statue of a woman holding a scale and sword in her hands was installed in December outside the court building. The sculpture is wrapped in a sari, a Bangladeshi revision of the usual representation, the Greek goddess Themis blindfolded and clad in a gown.

Mrinal Haque, the sculptor of the statue, said Friday that workers removed the sculpture amid tight security overnight Thursday.

He says he is so shocked that he can easily compare this loss to his mother’s death.

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/philippines-official-terror-suspect-besieged-city-47655025

“The Philippine military chief says top terror suspect Isnilon Hapilon is still hiding in the besieged city of Marawi in the country’s south.

Gen. Eduardo Ano told The Associated Press on Friday that militants are trying to find a way to extricate Hapilon.

Philippine troops backed by armored vehicles and rocket-firing helicopters are fighting to re-take control of Marawi. The city has been under siege by gunmen linked to the IS group since a raid earlier this week failed to capture Hapilon, one of Asia’s most-wanted militants.”

    • Milo nails it! What a splendid meme:

      Make America Haram Again

All eclat aside, Fjordman must be given credit where credit is due. As he notes in, “Recommendations for the West“:

“But above all, the West, and indeed the non-Muslim world, should make our countries Islam-unfriendly…

As in make the West—if not the entire non-Islamic world—haram again.

The West must first of all save itself. We have no obligation to “save” the Islamic world, and do not have the financial strength nor the demographic numbers to do so even if we wanted to. We are not all-powerful and are not in the position to help all of the Third World out of poverty, certainly not by allowing all of them to move here. [Superlative six minute video by Roy Beck about immigration and poverty at link.]

We should take a break from massive immigration, also non-Muslim immigration, for at least a generation, in order to absorb and assimilate the persons we already have in our countries. The West is becoming so overwhelmed by immigration that this may trigger civil wars in several Western nations in the near future. We already have massive Third World ghettos in our major cities. Future immigration needs to be more strictly controlled and ONLY non-Muslim.

This immigration break should be used to demonstrate clearly that the West will no longer serve as the dumping ground for excess population growth in other countries. We have cultures and countries that we’d like to preserve, too, and cannot and should not be expected to accept unlimited number of migrants from other countries. But above all, the West, and indeed the non-Muslim world, should make our countries Islam-unfriendly and implement a policy of containment of Dar al-Islam. This is the most civilized thing we can do in order to save ourselves, but also to limit the loss of life among both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Keep in mind that Fjordman published the above over a decade ago. (Hat tip: Gates of Vienna)

      What are the alternatives?

A: BBC host implies Europe has to “get used to” terror attacks (Hat tip: Gates of Vienna)

“Europe is getting used to attacks like this,” Katty Kay says. “We have to, because we are never going to be able to totally wipe this out. As ISIS gets squeezed in Syria and Iraq, we’re going to see more of these kinds of attacks taking place in Europe and Europe is starting to get used to that.”

Quite clearly, Ms. Katty Kay has never heard of neutron bombs.

Just as Japanese Imperialism was stopped dead (literally) in its tracks at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Islamic jihad can be terminated as well. It might require a slightly longer laundry list of target cities, but that is a niggling detail when compared to how imperative it is for the West to make Islam sit down and STFU.

B: European human rights chiefs order the British press NOT to reveal when terrorists are Muslims in crackdown on freedom of speech

The report, from the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) body, said there had been an increase in hate speech and racist violence in Britain between March 2009 and March 2016.

In an audacious move, the report recommends the British media be barred from reporting the Muslim background of terrorists.

And it comes after multiple terror atrocities by Muslim extremists across Paris, Brussels, Munich and other German cities over the last year.

So, instead of, “Just spread your legs lie down and get used to it”, we are told, “Ignore it and it will go away.”

Fat effing chance—and those who have passed a simple Sanity Test (much hilarity at link) or exhibited the occasional odd spike in their EEG, often will demonstrate a remarkable (but frequently discouraged) refusal to accept any such lunatic suicidal moronic self-loathing idiotic absurd suggestion.

C: Massively Disproportionate Retaliation (Substitute this article’s mention of “Yugoslavia” with “Islam”.)

As one waggish observer noted, “After a while, Muslims would begin to feel rather silly bowing five times a day to a plain of hot, smoking glass.”

One way or another, it is incumbent upon the West to ensure that—at the very least—Muslims begin to feel foolish for promoting a policy of global domination that routinely sees their largest population centers turned into rubble whose only further destiny is to have that same debris bounced around a few more times.

Please keep in mind that I would much rather see some far more peaceable resolution of this process. Regardless, it is crucial to consider a famous quote by John Fitzgerald Kennedy:

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”

My personal tendency towards reductive logic arrives at this paraphrasing:

“Those who make peace impossible will make their annihilation inevitable.”

      Your thoughts and comments, please…

      http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/809608/Egypt-Minya-gunmen-Coptic-Christians-killed-terror-attack

“DOZENS of people have been killed after gunmen opened fire on buses carrying a group of Coptic Christians to a monastery in Egypt.

A group of more than 50 Coptic Christians travelling towards the monastery of St Samuel near Minya, about 150 miles from Cairo, was targeted by “armed terrorists”, according to state media.

So far least 26 people are reported to have been killed and a further 26 wounded.

Bishop Anba Ermia, president of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Centre, tweeted that as many as 35 people had died, including children.

Eyewitnesses said said the Copts were attacked as they were going to pray at the monastery, in the western part of the province.

Their convoy was stopped on a road approaching the place of worship by a group of masked gunmen, who then opened fire.

Minya’s provincial governor, Essam al-Bedaiwy, said the group had been travelling in two buses and truck when the attack happened, Reuters reported.

A spokesperson for Egypt’s Interior Ministry said the gunmen were travelling in three vehicles.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called a meeting of security officials in the wake of the latest attack on the Coptic Orthodox Church – Egypt’s largest Christian church and the Middle East’s biggest Christian community.

Christians make up around 10 per cent of Egypt’s 92 million population and have repeatedly been targeted by Islamic extremists…”

  6. You can’t make this stuff up- check out this interview with this self-described “good Muslim” woman (from MANCHESTER no less) who was interviewed wearing some kind of burka that had guns, knives and hand grenades printed on it. Like someone said, nothing says “love” like a hand grenade and a flick knife”

Can you imagine what would have happened to anyone they interviewed who was wearing say a Trump T-shirt or a “Make UK Great Again” hat or even carrying a pro UK or pro Christian banner?

They would be rounded up and thrown in jail before the guy could put a microphone in their face.

UK has now gone full circle. No doubt about it- officially a Sharia compliant country that is halal for all Muslims who are looking for a nice place to live for free courtesy of their Christian slaves.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/business-39947942

“Facebook’s collection of data makes it one of the most influential organisations in the world. Share Lab wanted to look “under the bonnet” at the tech giant’s algorithms and connections to better understand the social structure and power relations within the company…

Not that she expects Share Lab’s research to lead to a mass Facebook exodus, or a dramatic increase in the scrutiny of tech titans.

“What is most striking is the sense of resignation, the impotence of regulation, the lack of options, the public apathy,” says Dr Powles. “What an extraordinary situation for an entity that has power over information – there is no greater power really.”

It is this extraordinary dominance that the Share Lab team set out to illustrate. But Mr Joler is quick to point out that even their grand maps cannot provide an accurate picture of the social media giant’s capabilities.

There is no guarantee, for example, that there are not many other algorithms at work that are still heavily guarded trade secrets.

However, Mr Joler argues, “it is still the one and only map that exists” of one of the greatest forces shaping our world today.”

An LBC spokesman said: “LBC and Katie Hopkins have agreed that Katie will leave LBC effective immediately.”

….the night during ramadan when Shias put the koran on their heads 🙂 🙁

      ————————————————————————-
      Question :
I would like to know exactly why do we hold the holy qur’an on our heads
      during Amal of Shabe Qader?

      Answer:

The holy quran was revealed on Lailatul-Qadr (Night of Power) We consider
the Ma’sumin as the living and speaking quran. Therefore, in the Amals, we
are praying to Allah with both the silent or written quran (on our heads)
as well as the living or speaking quran.

This is when we mention the names of Allah, the Prophet, and the
Ahlul-Bayt 10 times each. The fact that we put the quran on our head is a
      sign of respect and reverence.

Hence we beseech Allah by the thaqalayn – the speaking and the silent Qur’an.

Mustafa Gunes, an Islamic State operative from Turkey, was killed in an air strike in Mayadin, Syria, on April 27, the statement said. Abu Asim al-Jazeri, an Islamic State planner from Algeria, was killed in Mayadin on May 11, it said.

  15. Nancy Pelosi complains Trump not visiting countries in alphabetical order

Has Nancy Pelosi completely lost her mind? Or does she just have to complain about everything President Trump does?

During a press briefing on Thursday, the House Minority Leader criticized the president’s choice of visiting Saudi Arabia first during his inaugural foreign trip.

“I thought it was unusual for the President of the United States to go to Saudi Arabia first. Saudi Arabia!” Pelosi said.

“It wasn’t even alphabetical. I mean, Saudi Arabia.”

The Democrat leader contrasted Trump’s visit with George W. Bush first visiting Mexico, and Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama visiting Canada first.

“Our friends and neighbors,” she said. “What was the decision-making process to go to Saudi Arabia first? That is a question that I have,” she said.

If Trump were to begin visiting foreign countries by alphabetical order, he would first visit Afghanistan, followed by Albania, Algeria, Andorra and Angola.

The leader of the populist anti-mass migration Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) Heinz-Christian Strache has proposed that known Islamists should be arrested and sent to prisons on “lonely islands”.

Mr. Strache made the comments in reaction to the terrorist attack in Manchester which saw the deaths of 22 people and over 60 injured. The FPÖ leader said Islamists were “tomorrow’s murderers” and the European Union needed to introduce “hard” measures against returning Islamic State fighters, Austrian newspaper Die Presse reports.

According to Strache, almost all of the Islamic State fighters who return to Europe from Syria and Iraq pose a potential security risk. He said many of these fighters, including the Manchester terrorist, are well known to authorities.

“If they are banished to a lonely and well-guarded island, the problem is solved for the most part, instead of waiting until they strike and massacre people,” he said.

He also urged EU member states to deport foreign radicals as soon as possible. “Against such radical people, only hard measures help,” he noted.

“Heavy clashes between rival factions erupted in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Friday, with loud explosions and heavy artillery fire heard since the early morning.

The fighting appeared to be caused by a push to regain territory by armed groups linked to a self-declared, Islamist- leaning “national salvation government” that was set up in 2014.

It has been largely displaced by the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) that arrived in Tripoli last year, but continues draw on armed support, especially from the western city of Misrata.

The GNA has struggled to exert its authority in Tripoli and beyond, or rein in the militias that have held power on the ground in Libya since the country’s 2011 uprising.

    http://english.aawsat.com/asharq-al-awsat-english/news-middle-east/turkey-sacks-4000-judges-linked-failed-coup

“Over 4,000 judges and prosecutors have been dismissed over their links to last year’s failed coup, the Turkish Justice Minister announced on Friday.

“Over 4,000 judges and prosecutors have been removed from their posts inside the Turkish judiciary over their links to the Fethullah Terrorist Organization,” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said, referring to the name Turkey gives the Gulen movement.

Ankara blames the attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on an Islamic movement led by Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen.

Gulen, living in self-imposed exile in the United States, vehemently denies the claim that he ordered the coup attempt.

“The investigations have finished. At this moment, there is no judge or prosecutor left that we have not screened,” Bozdag said in a speech in Ankara.

He added that there could be further investigations “because of the nature of the organization”, saying: “We are facing a very different kind of terror organization.”

The head of a parliamentary committee said there is no doubt that Gulen was behind the coup…”

    • “The investigations have finished. At this moment, there is no judge or prosecutor left that we have not screened…”

How tragic that the West—with little in the way of doubt about this issue—has not “screened” its so-called immigrants by employing even a slight fraction of the diligence that Turkey has been culling its internal enemies with.

Once again, Islam (despite its crude and primitive methods) manages to outdo the West.

Who shall shoulder the blame for this blatant malfeasance?

  22. The Democrats’ Second Secession & America’s New Civil War
How to look at the bizarre turn our political life has taken.

Senator Kamala Harris is a rising star in the Democratic Party, frequently mentioned on the short-list of contenders for the next presidential race. In a recent commencement speech at Howard University Harris issued a call to arms, urging her audience to rally behind the Democrats’ resistance to the Trump administration: “Graduates, indeed we have a fight ahead. This is a fight to define what kind of country we are, and it’s a fight to determine what country we will be.”

Ignore for a moment the impropriety of addressing a class of students as though they were Democratic Party operatives. Focus instead on the statement itself. The call “to define what kind of country we are” is an ominous agenda for America. Compared to other nations, America is absolutely unique in one regard: it is a country defined in its creation. Normally, nations have been formed on the basis of common origins, ethnicities, and languages – a modern form of tribalism. In contrast, America was created by peoples of diverse origins and ethnicities and on principles that were universal. The American union was forged in a set of founding documents that insisted on the equality of citizens – regardless of origins. The idea that creates the identity “American” is summarized in America’s official motto: e pluribus unum – out of many, one.

      • I’m immensely grateful he’s no longer an asset for the enemy. A hard-leftist redeemed. I’ll try to remember that when I’m cursing them all.

I personally saw him defend two Jewish college kids about to be attacked by a mob for being Jewish (wearing a kippa). He’s not observant himself, but there he was, a frail man in his 70s wobbling with a cane, physically putting himself between the kids and nazifas who would do them harm.

That went unreported as far as I know.

He started an organization across the country that’s meant to help kids like these. They can support each other, liaise with legal teams, work out self-defense strategies.

All this, from a man forever plagued by Red-Diaper-Rash Syndrome.

    • In the article he says there won’t be fighting, there won’t be set piece battles between conventional armies but there will be asymmetric war which will last much longer then anyone besids the radical left likes.

  23. The Big Money Behind Fake News
What really powers the media’s fake news scandal machine.
    May 26, 2017
    Daniel Greenfield

    Fake news is profitable.

The New York Times hit piece on the Comey memo earned the paper its most concurrent readers per second. Pretty good for a piece about a piece of paper that the leftist paper had never even seen and which was, supposedly, described to it by one of Comey’s associates.

But that didn’t stop it from racking up over 6 million views.

Media fake news isn’t just an agenda. It’s enormously profitable. Hit pieces powered by anonymous sources bring in over 100,000 readers in an age when live is king. For individual reporters, finding a source, real or fake, that can back up the left’s Trump conspiracy theories can put them on the map.

The Comey story comes from Michael Schmidt who made a name by supposedly finding documents relating to media claims of a “Haditha Massacre” in a Baghdad junkyard where “an attendant was burning them as fuel to cook a dinner of smoked carp.” It was dashing and also very convenient.

The claims didn’t hold up in court. Most of the Marine heroes who were dragged through the mud over Haditha had their cases dropped. One case dragged out and ultimately came out to very little. But the New York Times cashed in. And Schmidt did much better out of it than Cpl. Stephen Tatum.

  25. This is an article from 2016. about attacks on Copts in Minya governorate, the governorate where there was today’s terrorist attack.

EIPR warns of increasing sectarian attacks in Minya governorate and urges state institutions to enforce the law and initiate social dialogue on the church construction law
    Monday, 18 July, 2016

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights is extremely concerned with the increasing frequency of sectarian violence in the Minya governorate, which has been the scene of attacks and the burning of Copts’ homes in several towns. We also caution against the official approach , which deal mainly with these violations through customary reconciliation sessions: an instrument that only serves to perpetuate tensions and creates a climate in which any dispute between citizens is liable to escalate into sectarian violence and collective punishment. It also strengthens the belief among some citizens that they have the right to dictate the practice of religious rites by other citizens.

The governorate of Minya has witnessed several instances of sectarian violence recently, most prominently:

-A family of two Christian clerics in the village of Tahna al-Gabal was attacked on Sunday with sticks and bladed weapons, resulting in the death of Fam Mary Khalaf. Three other people sustained stab wounds.

-Last Friday, several hundred angry Muslims in Nazlat Abu Yaqoub in the Minya district attacked the homes of several Copts, looting and burning of five of them, claiming that a house was being converted into a church.

-On June 29, 2016, Muslims in Kom al-Loufi in the district of Samalout attacked the home of Ashraf Khalaf Fahmi, which is under construction, claiming it was a church. They set fire to it and four other adjacent houses owned by his brothers.

The EIPR has documented 77 incidents of sectarian violence and tension in Minya since January 25, 2011, including ten incidents since January 2016. This figure does not include the violence and attacks on churches, religious structures, schools, civic associations, and private property owned by Copts from August 14 to 17 following the violent crack down on the sit-ins of the supporters of the deposed President Mohamed Morsi at Rabia al-Adawiya and Nahda Squares, which were reprisals for protests by Egyptians and the removal of President Mohammed Morsi.

“The government has failed to deal with the issue of Christian-Muslim relations and sectarian attacks due to the dominance of a purely security mentality,” said Ishak Ibrahim, an EIPR researcher. “Problems are viewed as isolated incidents and the most needed comprehensive vision of causes, manifestations, or solutions is simply absent. Solutions are typically short sighted, and often unlawful.”

He added, “In some cases, despite the deployment of security forces on the scene, attacks have taken place and reinforcements arrive late.”

The EIPR affirms the importance of clear directives by state institutions to enforce the law in criminal incidents. The security apparatus and Public Prosecution are obligated to arrest persons involved and those inciting to sectarian violence and to question them as a prelude to prosecution.

The EIPR demands that immediate steps be taken to legalize the status of churches and existing church buildings where worship services are held without a permit. The law on the construction of churches and affiliated buildings, scheduled to be put to the House of Representatives, should be the subject of serious social debate. Religious institutions and civil society organizations must be given the opportunity to actively engage with the terms of the law and its implementing regulations, to ensure that the law as issued includes objective, fair rules and conditions that meet the needs of various sectors of the citizenry.

In the coming days, the EIPR will launch a campaign to raise awareness of the problems of church construction and renovation, with the objective of ensuring the issuance of a fair law for church construction that is consistent with the right to worship as enshrined in the constitution and international human rights conventions.

  27. FYI (overview of situation in Philippines)

. Federalism and security arrangement in armed conflict areas
    April 25, 2017
    By:
    Jennifer Santiago Oreta, Blueboard

Federalism is being proposed as the alternative to the prevailing overly-centralized power structure of the government. Especially for the Visayas and Mindanao provinces, the lure of federalism has gripped the areas since the time of President Ramos. It is not an exaggeration to say that the federalism agenda provided President Duterte broad-base support especially during the campaign period.

The main argument of federalism proponents is that it will make government programs and services more relevant and closer to the people. By strengthening the powers of the local government, it will ultimately translate to positive outcome benefitting the local populace. This argument, however, misses the reality that political clans continue to dominate local government units (LGU), so strengthening the local government consequently will also increase the power-base of these political clans – unless an anti-political dynasties bill gets passed and approved into law, a million-dollar question given the present composition of the Senate and Congress.

The reality of political clans finds relevance on the issue of security – in the provinces, whosoever controls the political power also controls the security institutions. This is the elephant in the room that commentators seem to gloss over – will federalism end the decades-long conflicts in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM)?

A cursory look at the experience of other countries would show that federalism has been used to address conflicts, examples of which are India, Canada and Spain. The Kashmir region in India for instance, has been given greater power especially in peace and order and service delivery; Canada and Spain adopted federalism to address the sentiments of its French-speaking provinces and the Basque region, respectively. Other countries used the federalism-card to address issues relative to the large number of ethno-linguistic groups – Switzerland, Belgium and India fall under this category.

Needless to say, federalism has indeed proven to solve conflict and division in the countries enumerated. But to rephrase a common adage, what is effective for Juan may not be effective for Pedro.

The current armed conflict in the ARMM region is complex and layered. While the government has been engaging the armed groups through peace talks (the Moro National Liberation Front/ MNLF and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front/ MILF), such efforts only address the ‘vertical’ conflict between the state and non-state groups. Despite the peace agreements, the horizontal conflicts of clan feuds (or ‘Rido’ in the local dialect) will not be automatically settled.

Add to this configuration is the presence of terror organizations – the Abu Sayyaf Group, the Maute group, the Rajah Sulaiman Group, the Black Flag Movement to name just some of the local terrorist organizations that operate in the area. (While local in character, the global network and reach of these groups necessitate international sharing of intelligence information as well as closer cooperation in law enforcement).

Complicating this situation a bit further is the fact that the ARMM region also sits on a large area of ancestral domain of indigenous peoples (IP). Some IP leaders claim that the IPRA law (Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act) is the “peace settlement” of the government with the IPs and therefore must be treated on equal footing as that of the peace agreements with the MILF and MNLF.

In some provinces still in the ARMM, the communist’ New People’s Army (NPA) are also operating. (The MNLF and MILF desire more autonomy for the region, but the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-NPA’s ultimate goal is to take over the Philippine government – alliances therefore among these groups remain only on the tactical level.)

That, in a nutshell is the conflict in the ARMM. So we go back to the basic question – will a shift to a federal system of government address the armed conflict besetting the region? If so, what is the appropriate security arrangement that must be adopted?….

  31. REUTERS – Tillerson declines to host Ramadan event at State Department – sources

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has declined a request to host an event to mark Islam’s holy month of Ramadan, two U.S. officials said, apparently breaking with a bipartisan tradition in place with few exceptions for nearly 20 years.

Since 1999, Republican and Democratic secretaries of state have nearly always hosted either an iftar dinner to break the day’s fast during Ramadan or a reception marking the Eid al-Fitr holiday at the end of the month, at the State Department.

Tillerson turned down a request from the State Department’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs to host an Eid al-Fitr reception as part of Ramadan celebrations, said two U.S. officials who declined to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

According to an April 6 memo seen by Reuters, the office – which typically initiates such events – recommended that Tillerson hold an Eid al-Fitr reception.

His rejection of the request suggests there are no plans this year for any high-profile Ramadan function at the State Department. The month of fasting and prayer for Muslims gets under way in many countries on Saturday.

When asked by Reuters to comment on Tillerson declining a request to host an Eid al-Fitr event in July for Ramadan, a State Department spokesperson said:

“We are still exploring possible options for observance of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the month of Ramadan. U.S. ambassadors are encouraged to celebrate Ramadan through a variety of activities, which are held annually at missions around the world.”

Muslim activists have accused President Donald Trump’s administration of having an unfriendly attitude toward Islam, encapsulated by its attempts to ban citizens of several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

The administration says that while it strongly opposes Islamist militants, it has no quarrel with Islam. Aides point to Trump’s visit this month to Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam where he addressed the leaders of more than 50 Muslim countries, as evidence of that.

Members of Congress, Muslim civil society and community leaders, diplomats from Muslim countries and senior U.S. officials usually attend the State Department Ramadan event, a symbol of the U.S. government’s diplomatic efforts with Muslim countries and people.

If Tillerson avoids hosting one this year, that could send a message “that it is not as important to this administration to engage with Muslims,” said former U.S. diplomat Farah Pandith, who served in the Bush and Obama administrations and helped plan Ramadan events at the White House and State Department.

Tillerson issued a statement on Friday to mark the start of Ramadan, which he called “a month of reverence, generosity, and self-reflection.”

“Most importantly, it is a cherished time for family and friends to gather and give charity to those who are less fortunate,” he said.

    PAST RAMADANS

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright started the tradition 18 years ago of America’s top diplomat hosting a public event for Ramadan, a lunar month.

The secretary of state of the time usually gives remarks there on the meaning of Ramadan.

In April, the State Department’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs made a request to Tillerson’s office that he deliver remarks at an Eid al-Fitr reception this year, and suggested a two-week range of dates in July. The event would serve to “highlight State Department initiatives and the importance of Muslim engagement,” the memo said.

It noted that by hosting a reception just after Ramadan, rather than an iftar – an often sumptuous dinner at sunset – a State Department event could be held any time of the day, thus preventing “a very late evening for the Secretary.”

Several weeks later, that office and other offices at the State Department were alerted that Tillerson declined the request, the officials said.

Reuters was told of the request being declined but did not see Tillerson’s reply. An official with the Office of Religion and Global Affairs did not respond to a request for comment.

Several prominent Muslim-American groups in the Washington area who are normally invited to the Ramadan event told Reuters this week that they had yet to receive an invitation from the State Department, which they said was unusual.

“If they’re having one, we haven’t been invited,” said Rabiah Ahmed, spokeswoman for the Muslim Public Affairs Council in Washington. A representative for her group has been invited to the State Department event in the past, she said.

    FRAUGHT RELATIONSHIP

Trump’s administration has had a fraught relationship with Muslims. As a presidential candidate, the Republican urged a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States, called for more surveillance of mosques and warned that radical Muslims were “trying to take over our children.”

Trump has since toned down his rhetoric and courts have halted his temporary travel ban on people from six mostly Muslim countries.

White House officials did not respond to a request for comment on whether they would continue the tradition this year of hosting a Ramadan-related event at the White House.

The State Department celebrates other religious traditions though some of those commemorations are not as well-established as the State Department’s Ramadan event. In 2014, then-secretary of state John Kerry hosted the first ever celebration at the State Department marking Diwali, the Hindu festival.

The White House also traditionally hosts annual Christmas and Easter events as well as a Seder dinner to mark the Jewish Passover.

The top U.S. diplomat has personally hosted a Ramadan event every year since 1999, often in the State Department’s grand Benjamin Franklin room, apart from three years.

In 2006 and 2015, deputies of the secretary of state at the time hosted either an iftar dinner or an Eid al-Fitr reception. In 2014, Kerry hosted a reception for Eid al-Adha, another important Muslim holiday.

  32. Erdogan family acquired tanker through offshore deal: European media (france24, May 26, 2017)
    http://www.france24.com/en/20170527-erdogan-family-acquired-tanker-through-offshore-deal-european-media

“The family of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are owners of a 26.5-million-euro ($29.64-million) oil tanker, which was acquired under a secretive offshore arrangement, a consortium of European news outlets reported Friday.

The Belgian newspaper Le Soir, Spain’s El Mundo, L’Espresso of Italy and the French online site Mediapart are members of European Investigative Collaboration (EIC), a cooperative initiative in investigative journalism.

The outlets began publishing on May 19 an investigation called the “Malta files,” delving into more than 150,000 documents from the Mediterranean tax haven. The Maltese government has said there are no secrets to be found in the cache.

According to Friday’s report, the Erdogan family became owners of an oil tanker called Agdash through companies registered in Malta and on the Isle of Man, a UK tax haven.

A quarter of the finance was provided by Sitki Ayan, a Turkish businessman who is a friend of the Erdogan family, and three-quarters by a Turkish-Azeri billionaire, Mubariz Mansimov, who owns the Istanbul-headquartered transport group Palmali, the report said.

The website Marine Traffic (marinetraffic(.)com) lists Agdash as a 13,000-tonne vessel built in 2007.

EIC said that neither Erdogan’s office, members of the family said to be involved in the operation, nor Mansimov nor Ayan answered requests to respond to the report.”

  33. Meet the ‘super mothers’ making a Stockholm suburb safer (thelocal, May 26, 2017)
    https://www.thelocal.se/20170526/meet-the-super-mothers-making-a-stockholm-suburb-safer

“A group of ‘super mothers’ have told The Local how they calmed the streets of a Stockholm suburb by commanding respect from the area’s youths.

Fatma Ipek has been running Kvinnokraft (woman power) in Stockholm suburb Fittja since 2016. The idea is simple but effective: a group of local women go out and walk the streets together in an effort to encourage calm and order among the young people there.

“The project has been going for two years and there’s definitely changes. We’ve created a safer feeling, we hope there will be more changes in the future,” Ipek told The Local.

The scene of unrest during the Stockholm riots of 2013, Fittja has struggled with social problems for a number of years, and was one of six ‘risk areas’ in Sweden named in a report by Swedish police in 2015.

Many of its residents have a Turkish background, and according to Ipek, the roll of mothers in Turkish culture means that they command a kind of respect from the youngsters that even the police aren’t able to call upon:..”
