“The supreme court of Saudi Arabia has sentenced to death 14 young Shiite activists in the eastern province of Qatif, where many Shiite protests were staged over the past few years against the regime of the Al Saud family, Iranian broadcaster PressTV reported Friday.

The trial was allegedly held in the special section of the court dealing with terrorism cases and which, according to opposition members, is a tool of the Saudi interior ministry to crack down on anti-regime activists.

According to some defense attorneys, quoted by the television, the young Shiites were physically and psychologically tortured to obtain a confession.

The sentence was issued using a 2014 Saudi ‘law against terrorism’ with harsher penalties for those found guilty of terrorism.

The law has prompted concern from the United Nations and the special rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism has called on Saudi Arabia to stop using it against people peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression, association and assembly.”

    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2017/5/26/libyan-group-seizes-jail-holding-ex-gaddafi-officials

“An armed Libyan group on Friday seized the al-Hadhba jail in south Tripoli where former officials of the regime of late strongman Moammer Gaddafi are being held, a judicial source said.

The prison guards were forced to withdraw after an armed group loyal to the UN-backed Government of National Accord attacked, said the source requesting anonymity, adding that two guards were killed.

The fate of the top former officials for Gaddafi, who was overthrown and killed in a 2011 revolution, was not known late on Friday.

More than 30 are being held there, including Gaddafi’s last premier Baghdadi al-Mahmudi and his former intelligence chief, Abdullah Senussi.

Both men were condemned to death in 2015.

The official named the group that attacked the facility as the pro-GNA Katiba Thowar Tripoli.

Al-Hadhba jail is controlled by an Islamist group headed by Khaled Sherif, who was a deputy minister in the former government set up by the Fajr Libya coalition of militias that seized Tripoli in 2014.

The group has not yet said whether it backs or opposes the GNA.”

“The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will sustain its mission in Afghanistan as several allies of the alliance pledged more troops contribution.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting of the Heads of the States and Government on Thursday, the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said “We reviewed our training mission in Afghanistan, and we agreed that we will continue to sustain our mission.”

Stoltenberg further added “I welcome that several Allies came forward today with new troop contributions. And on the basis of our review, we will take further decisions in the coming weeks.”

In his statement ahead of the meeting on Thursday, Stoltenberg emphasized on the role of the alliance to train the local forces so that they can fight terrorism.

“Training local forces is one of the best weapons in the fight against terrorism. We are already training Iraqi forces,” he added.

The NATO Secretary General admitted that many challenges still persist in Afghanistan.

However, he said “But we have achieved a lot. We have been able to train and build Afghan forces which are now able to take responsibility for security in their own countries themselves. That’s a great and important achievement. And the Afghans show professionalism and bravery in the way that they handle the security situation in Afghanistan.””

  8. MI5 reveal ‘up to 23,000 jihadis living in Britain’ ahead of Bank Holiday security boost (express, May 27, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/809916/manchester-bombing-mi5-jihadis-living-britain-bank-holiday-security

“UP TO 23,000 potential jihadis are reportedly living in Britain as police investigate the sprawling terror network linked to Manchester bomber Salman Abedi.

Security services revealed the figure as they said up to 3,000 would-be terrorists are being investigated as “subjects of interest”.

The announcement, unusual for security agencies such as MI5 and MI6, highlights the difficulties in investigating potential terror threats, according to insiders.

Amid a reported 500 active terror investigations, one security source told the Mail: “It is difficult because becoming aware that someone is an extremist sympathiser does not make them a live and present danger.

“It is a balancing act – is the intelligence sufficient to push them up the list of priorities or should the focus be on someone else given the finite resources available?”

The warning comes as extra police officers and soldiers are deployed to thousands of events across the UK this bank holiday weekend amid heightened terror fears…”
